Divorce is a bad choice, but it may be the best choice.

The more you know about divorce, the better decisions you will make about divorce.

More than thirty years ago, this philosophy led us to write our client guide to divorce. It was updated again this year and can be accessed on our website, aboutdivorce.com. Divorce is a tragedy. It is the end of a relationship that the parties intended to last a lifetime. That tragedy is compounded when a party comes to the process with inaccurate information. A small amount of time spent reading the relevant portions of the guide can save a lot of time, anger and money. Whole books are written on some of the topics we treat with a few paragraphs. Our hope is that neither you, nor anyone close to you, will need this information. The reality is that you probably know someone who needs this information so they can make a choice that is best for them.

From the Publisher Seek the Peace and Prosperity of the City in which I have placed you. Jeremiah 29:7 INFLUENCE

Influence, it’s a concept that is very difficult to define or specifically measure. It’s a word we use to compare the relationship of our politicians with their citizens, how a husband and wife interact, or what impact an employee has on their fellow employees. The use of the word influence is a lot like the use of the word love, with its many contexts. It’s a word that can sound impressive and sincere but have no meaning.

Jim Walker yet essential. Without it, food is bland and tasteless. In recipes, salt serves all the other ingredients by coaxing out and enhancing their fullest expression and flavor. Salt influences our meals often in the background, not selfpromoting, and it brings flavor as it helps preserve those who are exposed to its influence. Salt cleanses and heals, and without it decay and degradation ensue, for salt preserves and produces longevity. The pages of 4Memphis magazine are full of salt - people and organizations working to heal and preserve the people of our city. The people in the pages of 4Memphis bring taste and joy to the culture of our city. They often labor and serve with little or no attention, while being underfunded to care for the needs of those they have been called to serve. They are seasoned with the salt of service, and their influence is not power of an elected office or shouting of the media, but what they bring to the city where they are planted. Salt must be mined or harvested so it can be delivered to those who need it to survive, and the salt of Memphis must be promoted, nurtured and supported so it can be delivered to all of us in the great city.

The etymology of the word gives us some understanding of its original use, as an astrological term, defined by Webster’s Dictionary as, “an ethereal fluid held to flow from the stars and to affect the actions of humans.” Today, the word is most often used to describe the force of power or persuasion of an individual to move the heart or actions of someone else- whether for good or for evil. We currently live in a world dominated by a broadcast media and social media that attempt to influence how each of us think, particularly when it comes to the upcoming election. The broadcast media used to be more subtle in its attempt to influence the audience, but today you can tune into CNN and Fox as they cover the exact same event and get totally different outcomes. The networks seem to care little for The salt of Memphis is the businesses that employ our the truth as they have abandoned their position of being a citizens, the churches and synagogues that feed our spiritual needs, and the tremendous charitable community positive influence on the culture. that serves all of the Mid-South.

SALT

The Bible in Genesis 19 paints an interesting contrast, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are portrayed as cities that are so morally bankrupt and in decay that they are on the verge of destruction. The family of Lot is told to leave the city, and when Lot’s wife looks at the city she is turned into a pillar of salt, the very substance that preserves everything from decay.

One of the great frustrations of being publisher of 4Memphis during the pandemic is that the events that we normally support aren’t happening and the organizations that rely on these funds to support the needs of our community are struggling to maintain their support of a growing need. It is easy to see why this is such a problem, given that there is so much work that needs to be done in the best of normal times. We must help them be salt in the worst of times.

Verse 26, “But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt." 4Memphis challenges all of us to be salt in our community by ignoring the negative influence of the broadcast and Salt is essential to our body’s health and was key to social media, and instead reach out in compassion to preserving food before the modern age of refrigeration. all that God puts in your daily path. Elections and the Without salt nothing lives. Salt is not a flashy spice. You leadership it brings will come and go, but our city and our do not see it once it has been applied to food. It rarely neighbors will be here long after the Pandemic is gone. calls attention to itself as a predominant flavor. It just supports and enhances the flavor. Salt is basic and Seek the Peace and Prosperity of Memphis. 22

Savannah Jewell White Art Show Yearning Horizons

Yearning Horizons, the first solo show for Savannah Jewell White, was held downtown at The Medicine Factory. Friends and fans came by for the opening and by the end of the weeklong run, almost all the pieces shown were sold. White’s appealing colors and fluid lines graced canvas, paper, and wood panel pieces, some with traditional finish and some with epoxy, some framed and some not. The artworks were mainly inspired by travels to South Africa. White is an enthusiastic and avid traveler, the experiences fuel her imagination and flow into her paintbrush. All guests wore masks at the opening and we asked that couples and groups briefly take them off for photos.

1 MILLION Meals

For Shelby County Schools Students Through a partnership between the YMCA, Shelby County Schools, Chartwells and University of Memphis, 1 million meals were provided to Shelby County students during the pandemic. Chartwells, the dining services partner for the U of M, has spent $1.3 million locally during the pandemic while also supporting food insecurities on campus with donations of $29,000 to Tiger Pantry and $9,500 for meal cards. The University Center dining hall is being used to make and compile the meals before distribution by the YMCA. “When we began providing this support for our community, we never imagined we would make one million meals,” said Glendel Coble, resident district manager for Chartwells. “As we continue to provide meals for those in need, we want to thank our team members, the University of Memphis, YMCA and Shelby County Schools. This would not have been possible without the support and dedication of such great and caring people.” #BetterTogether “The Memphis community is strong,” said Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joris M. Ray. “We are extremely grateful for our partners at the YMCA, University of Memphis and Chartwells who have come together to help feed Shelby County Schools students. Our goal to eliminate hunger for children during this unprecedented crisis has been met with a tremendous response, which is affirmation that WE ARE 901.”

Ramsay Laughlin & George Jamison May 25, 2019

orn and raised in Memphis, George and Ramsay are certainly tried and true! They have what I like to call an “infectious kindness.” They take time away from everyone else in the room to listen to you and make sure you are taken care of. Credit is due not only to their natural southern charm, but to their incredible families. It’s clear the people in their life matter to them for a multitude of reasons. Two big themes shone through for this couple: family and service. Ramsay’s relationship with her mom and George’s naval commitment to the U.S Marine Corp were largely celebrated through their wedding. As a token of both gratitude and love, Ramsay chose to have her ceremony at the Germantown United Methodist Church, where her parents were also married. You’ll see below one of their nephews carrying his own little cousin down the aisle. This ceremony was precious---you can imagine the tears! Additionally, to honor George’s service, they did the traditional, amazing and colorful sword arch to start their reception! To caption the photo below, "Welcome to the U.S Marine Corp, Ramsay!" Having graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, George’s dedication to family and service is unmatched. It’s hard not to notice these two were raised by the best! May all congratulations be in order for George & Ramsay!

Celebrating the Wedding of

Caroline Greene & Will Klinke JULY 11, 2020

W

ill and I have known each other since we were probably 8 or 9, but we never really spoke until we were 25 or 26! We went to the same elementary, middle, and high school, but Will was a grade above me. He was always way cooler than me (and a football player), so we never really crossed paths. I was more of a nerd who loved Harry Potter. Two of our best friends, Barry and Caroline, ended up getting married, and after I moved back from Nashville, all I heard about from them was how I had to meet Will Klinke and that we were 'perfect for each other.' So finally, in October of 2016, we finally 'met' (even though we'd known of each other for almost 20 years) at a friend's party. Oddly enough, changing our wedding plans due to COVID, ended up being a blessing in disguise. It challenged us and our relationship in new ways but proved to us that our relationship was strong and that we could survive even the darkest days. While we were sad about not having the reception we originally planned, what we ended up getting was even better - an intimate day with our 50 closest family and friends. It was a perfect day filled with special moments, speeches, and many, many happy tears. I wouldn't trade that day for anything...even if you told me I could have gone back to Plan A. Plus, our original reception at The Columns has been pushed to a first anniversary party on July 9, 2021. My best advice to future brides would be to be flexible and know that nothing will be perfect. I promise you your day will be special even if it's not the original one you planned. It might even turn out to be more meaningful than your original plan. -Caroline

Caring for One Another, Now More Than Ever By Dr. G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div, Church Health Founder and CEO Photos courtesy of Church Health

W

hen Church Health opened in 1987, our idea was simple: provide care to those who fall through the cracks. These are often people who cook for us, clean our homes, mow our lawns and take care of our children. When they are sick and hurt, their options are few. They deserve the same quality health care you would want your mother to receive.

on my desk containing a beautiful piece of artwork and a long letter from a patient.

At Church Health, we are called to care for those in need. Now it’s 2020 and we’re in the middle of a pandemic. More than 100,000 people in our community have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, and they are struggling to put food on the table and pay the bills. Visiting the doctor is at the bottom of their to-do list.

Patricia works in the Church Health referrals department over a state-funded program nicknamed “Tennessee Breast and Cervical.” Each year, Patricia helps hundreds of women access pap smears and mammograms. Under TBC, if a woman tests positive for breast cancer, the grant will cover the cost of treatment. Without Patricia’s help, these mothers, sisters and daughters would not be able to afford these tests, and cancer could go undetected for years.

Our goal at Church Health is to make care accessible and affordable, whether dispensing flu shots, diagnosing cancer, x-raying broken bones or restoring smiles. And now, COVID-19 testing and care. On site drive-thru COVID-19 testing was an early first step when the world shut down in March. Crosstown Concourse is centrally located for many of our patients, and testing is free. We’ve since taken testing on the road by hosting mobile testing events with our community partners throughout the city. When our clinics were temporarily closed, we shifted to telehealth, and it’s made patient care even more accessible. Nutrition has benefitted from telehealth the most. Appointments take place with patients in their own kitchens or at work. A health coach or registered dietician can “see” the items patients have in their pantry and refrigerator and how they approach preparing meals. From there, it’s much easier to give advice on reducing sugar, salt and fat intake to help patients manage chronic illness like diabetes and hypertension. In April, Church Health suspended our working requirement for patients. Many have lost jobs during the pandemic through no fault of their own. No one should left without health care due to a COVID-19 layoff. Church Health Giving Day, held July 21, went entirely virtual. We would stop at nothing to host our third annual event, knowing the need is greater now than ever before. With the generosity and creativity of Church Health staff, community partners and Ambassadors, Giving Day 2020 was a success. Thanks to everyone who answered the call to care for our neighbors who are sick and hurt today. During our Giving Day activity, a large package was waiting

In the letter, the patient thanked Church Health but made a point to describe how grateful she was to Patricia Newell for helping her through cancer.

In the letter, the patient thanked Patricia for walking her through the entire process involved with diagnosis, care and treatment. She credits Patricia, who held her hand the entire way, for helping her now live cancer-free. We are blessed to have people like Patricia who go above and beyond for our patients every single day. When you see our staff clad in head-to-toe protective equipment, you may wonder if you’re really at Church Health or on a space mission, but it’s the way we’ve had to safety resume activity in our clinics. Bones still break, infections still occur, and chronic disease is still prevalent. It’s because of incredible staff, generous donors and dedicated partners that we continue to provide quality health care to our patients every day. Church Health is here to care for all who enter our doors. To learn more, visit ChurchHealth.org.

Dr. Morris is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Church Health in Memphis, which opened in 1987 to provide quality, affordable healthcare for working, uninsured people and their families. Thanks to a broad base of financial support from the faith community, and the volunteered help of doctors, nurses, dentists and others, Church Health has grown to become the largest faith-based clinic of its type in the nation. In FY2019, Church Health had over 62,000 patient visits which is a 9% increase over the past year. Dr. Morris has an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, and M.D. from Emory University. He is a board-certified family practice physician and an ordained United Methodist minister. SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2020
