Good Grief! Art Opening Genevieve Farr Photography by Mark Ramirez Artist and Photomicrographer Genevieve Farr held an opening celebration for her recent exhibit, Good Grief! Her work is an exploration of items - and her grief - through a microscopic lens. In this series, she reflects on the loss of love and loved ones during the pandemic. For instance, one of her large scale, microscopic images is an artificial flower from a gravesite. The unique images are printed on Kodak Endura Metallic paper on .25” Acrylic Face Mount. While Genevieve ponders her loss in these works, she also celebrates her growth and renewal with microscopic images of colorful soaps and rainbow sprinkles. The exhibit was at 409 S. Main, in conjunction with the popup CCC under Black Sheep Catering. Owned by Meredith and Keith Clinton, CCC is an eclectic mix lounge focused on champagne and fried chicken, @chicken_champagne_caviar on Instagram. Mosaïculture:

A Plant-Based Art Form By Jill Maybry, Curator of the Pollinator & Delta Gardens, Memphis Botanic Garden Photos courtesy of Atlanta Botanical Garden

G

et ready to experience the fantastical world of mosaïculture! Mosaïculture is the horticultural art of creating topiary-like sculptures made up of thousands of annual bedding plants growing on threedimensional, upright forms. From May 8 through October 31 this year, the Memphis Botanic Garden will host an amazing exhibit of mosaïculture pieces, built in the form of Alice in Wonderland characters, called Alice’s Adventures at the Garden. These incredible pieces range from 3’ to over 20’ tall and get all of their colors from living, growing plants, artfully planted in specific patterns! “Mosaïculture'' is a strange word made up of the root words “mosaic,” which is the process of making patterns with smaller pieces, and “culture,” which refers to the process of growing things. It combines the art of forming one large showy piece from many smaller, differently-colored pieces with the art and practice of ornamental horticulture. Each mosaïculture sculpture starts out as a heavy-duty frame constructed of galvanized steel, which gives the piece its shape and support. This metal “skeleton” is wrapped in a special weather-resistant fabric and filled with lightweight potting soil. Tiny, rooted plant cuttings are then inserted through the fabric into the soil, where they begin to expand their roots and produce more foliage and flowers. Different plant species and varieties are carefully arranged in patterns to create the details of each piece. As the plants begin to grow, they are kept fastidiously pruned and trimmed so that they fill in their blocks of color evenly. These living sculptures must continually be pruned, weekly or biweekly depending on the plant’s growth rate, throughout the entire growing season. The giant sculptures are watered by hand every day, all season long. The tiny details of the different pieces dry out faster than the large solid areas, and often must be watered more than once a day. For instance, in this exhibit, the long neck of the Red Queen’s flamingo dries out faster than the solid body of the Queen’s torso and skirt. It takes a dedicated team of horticulture professionals (working seven days a week!) to keep all the sculptures properly watered, trimmed, and looking their best. You’re likely to spot them hard at work on one of the sculptures when you visit.

card guards in The Chess Set are red polka dot plants, and the white trim of Alice’s dress is made of white polka dot plants. The reddish-green stripes of the Cheshire Cat are made of ‘Coral Reef’ sedum, a cold-hardy sedum variety that may be grown as a perennial plant in Memphis gardens. The Cheshire Cat’s pink stripes are a variety of Joseph's coat, called Alternanthera ‘Brazilian Red Hots’. Alternanthera is an annual foliage plant that comes in a wide variety of colors, such as bright yellow, deep burgundy, and vibrant green. It is often used by commercial landscapers to create bright blocks of colors in large landscape designs. It’s a very useful plant for mosaïculture pieces, and you’ll see it used extensively in our Alice exhibit: different Alternanthera varieties have been used for The Red Queen’s dress, Alice’s dress, the rose tree’s leaves in The Chess Set, and even Alice’s bright blonde hair. One of the most unique, and certainly the “cutest” of the plant combinations, is on the hedgehog, which is serving as The Red Queen’s croquet ball. The hedgehog’s little belly and face are two different Alternanthera varieties, and its fuzzy spines are made from a variety of Carex, a grass-like plant commonly known as leatherleaf sedge. We think you’ll agree that the whole combination is absolutely adorable. Mosaïculture is a unique blend of art forms: three-dimensional sculpture, combinations of blocks of color, and the art and science of successfully growing living plants. This amazing exhibit is sure to thrill and delight you with its creative use of plants on giant, larger-than-life characters right from the pages of a beloved storybook! Alice’s Adventures at the Garden was originally designed and developed by the Atlanta Botanical Garden in collaboration with Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal. Learn more about Alice’s Adventures at the Garden and plan your visit at membg.org/alice.

It may surprise you to learn that the plants making up the bright colors of these living sculptures are the same bedding plants that you can plant in your pots and garden beds at home. The deep red of the roses on the Red Queen’s dress and rose trees comes from red-flowered bronze-leaf wax begonia, a classic and beloved bedding plant. The white roses are made of white-flowered green-leaf begonia. The bright pink flamingo (which the Red Queen is using as a croquet mallet, true to Lewis Carroll’s original book) is made up of pink polka dot plants, a bedding plant grown for its colorful foliage. Ken Hall Celebrates 60 Volunteer Odyssey A birthday with a zero needs a certain special something. In this case, 4Memphis Arts Contributor Ken Hall, who turned 60, decided to celebrate his milestone with a fundraising party for Volunteer Odyssey. The nonprofit organization founded by Sarah Petschonek promotes volunteering, working with both individual volunteers and non-profit agencies that need help. The agency recently relocated its offices to Arrow Creative on Philadelphia Street in Midtown, which made the party location an easy choice. Decorations included fun party hats with QR codes that offered information about volunteer opportunities and donating. Showing the very best of servant leadership, Sarah volunteered to bartend at the party so Ken could enjoy visiting with friends. Guests came from many eras in Ken’s life – from elementary school to college, Hands on Memphis days to artists, and promoters of the arts to Church Health colleagues - and they all enjoyed celebrating his milestone birthday! For more information about Volunteer Odyssey, see volunteerodyssey.org.

Building Momentum:

DeafConnect By Kevin Dean Photo Courtesy of DeafConnect

Mission:DeafConnect’s mission is to empower D/deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their families. Our vision is that there will be no barriers for D/deaf and hard-of-hearing people to reach their goals. Year founded: 1974 Website: DeafConnectMidSouth.org Number of people served: DeafConnect directly serves 13,000 people each year, and their work supports the 100,000+ members of the D/deaf community in the Memphis area. Annual budget: $800,000

D

id you know that more than 100,000 people in the Memphis area are D/deaf or hard of hearing? Thankfully, DeafConnect has existed for nearly fifty years to provide services to the D/ deaf community and advocate on their behalf. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires public and private entities to consider the needs of people who are D/deaf – which may include ASL interpreting services. Emergency interpreting is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each year, DeafConnect provides more than 12,000 hours of ASL interpreting. Though the organization is primarily known for providing American Sign Language interpreters to facilitate communications for members of the D/deaf community, they offer so much more. Not only does DeafConnect provide interpreting services for businesses, government, and nonprofits, but they also provide information, answer questions, share resources, facilitate communications and build community. They consult one-on-one with clients to help them with affordable housing, loan applications, job searches, resume-writing, responding to written requests for information and other resources. Each year, they hold a wide variety of events to bring the D/deaf community and those who care about them together to celebrate what makes them unique. DeafConnect was responsible for prodding local officials to include ASL interpreters at televised public events, which has been especially important over the last two years during the pandemic. The visibility of ASL interpreters during the Shelby County Health Department’s COVID updates have greatly increased awareness of the importance

of interpreters and inclusion for the D/deaf community. DeafConnect also recently won approval for ASL interpreters to be present in the room for people taking their driver’s test. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, DeafConnect continued to offer in-person ASL interpreting. Additionally, the pandemic has led to feelings of isolation for many people – a feeling that’s often magnified for people who are D/deaf. In response, DeafConnect offers video remote interpreting, or VRI, so the organization can connect people who live in more remote areas or have family and friends in other places. DeafConnect is also moving towards more one-on-one interactions, meeting clients where it’s most convenient and safest for them. You don’t have to be part of the D/deaf community to benefit from the many services the organization provides. DeafConnect educates people in the Memphis community about the needs and civil rights of people with hearing loss. They provide D/deaf cultural awareness training to businesses, law enforcement agencies, hospitals and other organizations. If you’re an individual interested in learning sign language, DeafConnect offers classes in American Sign Language for adults and children several times a year. They’ll even help you become a sign language interpreter! To find out more about DeafConnect, visit DeafConnectMidSouth.org or call 901-278-9307.

4Memphis Music Stardust

On March 25, 4Memphis Music celebrated the second event of its charity concert series with "Stardust- One Night in Vegas- Presented by Buster's Liquors & Wines." The 4Memphis Music house in East Memphis was gifted by Elvis to Dr. Nic in the ‘70s, and it was overtaken for one night with showgirls, magic, lights, and a red carpet to create a one-of-a-kind, old-school Vegas evening (inspired by Elvis and Ann-Margret’s 1964 Viva Las Vegas). Guests experienced an all-star lineup of Alston Meeks, The Flying V's, Amy LaVere, Uriah Mitchell, Cyrena Wages, and the legendary Don Bryant. As the crowd fanned and praised Bryant upon his exit from the stage, DJ Edwin Adams kept the party going from the mini-jungle room stationed at the center of the house. Jessica Haas "live painted" a silent auction piece by the pool, SteveAnne (Tall Slim Collins) emceed the evening, and guests mingled in the tattoo parlor and the ladies only room. Charity poker was held by our friend Kila Wilson, craft cocktails were served up by Strangeways Solutions, and food trucks lined the backyard to keep everybody dancing - all benefitting For The Kingdom, a non-profit dedicated to supporting the needs of the 38128 community ftkmemphis.org. Torrey Bates: A Man with a Mission By Jennifer Bates

P

icture this… Raleigh, February 2019. Torrey Bates sits in his new home surrounded by 6 of his children, his wife and their 2 dogs. Gunshots reign in the background as just the noise of life. There is no reaction from Torrey. No quick head turn, no pause in everyday activities, not even a flinch of the eye. After all, Torrey and his family have been here a whole month and those sounds are now “normal.” Now fast forward 3 years to February 2022. Same scenario in which Torrey sits in his home with his family, still 6 kids in the house, his wife, and now 4 dogs. The sound of gunshots reign but today they’re not just background noise. Today, Torrey stops, turns his head up, then falls to his knees in prayer. From the outside looking in, you may ask, what’s the difference? What must have happened in the last 3 years to change this man’s reaction? To be honest it wasn’t the three-year span of time. It was one night. It was one incident. It was one random act in which Torrey found himself within the walls of Methodist South after his truck took 16 bullets. Only one of those bullets made it through the windshield and into his cheek finally settling in his neck. Now I could take the time to tell you the story of that night, but that’s not why we’re here today. Today we will begin the journey to find out why Torrey was saved that night. Torrey was raised in the church. He knew the words to “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” before he even knew what a true friend was. As he got older, he heard God calling him to study the Word even deeper. He began preaching at the young age of 18. He spoke to crowds of youth every Wednesday and even more so on Sundays. He was walking with God, or at least that’s what he would have told you back then. Of course, our story never ends at 18 years old. Eventually, his walk would guide him down his own path with God close behind. That’s right. God was still on his mind, yet He became an afterthought rather than the first instinct. Torrey prayed regularly and thanked God for all he had. However, God knew that there was so much more awaiting Torrey and He needed to get his attention in a drastic way. This brings us back to that one fateful night in which God literally yelled at Torrey and then pulled him by the arm and led him to Methodist South. God took over the hands of the doctors and nurses and guided them

through the care that Torrey needed that night. God took over the tongue of his wife who told him over and over again to keep his eyes open while he was being cared for in the hospital. God took the bullet and slid it through Torrey’s cheek and rested it in his neck for a constant reminder of His goodness. Torrey was saved on Saturday, December 18, 2021, for something much greater than himself. He was rescued from an inevitable death for the glory of God and today he sees this clearer than ever before. Torrey has a new vision for this world and it begins in Raleigh. Hearing from the Lord during the pandemic, Torrey and his fellow employees began a program called Feed the Block in which they began to feed about 50 children a day. This quickly grew and at the height of the program, they were feeding upwards of 1400 people daily. However, Torrey understands that this is just like plugging the dam. This is not a long-term fix of the food insecurity found in Raleigh. With this said, Torrey is currently working on a project to bring an agrihood to the Raleigh community that will provide sustainable living, employment and nutrition to the residents. Torrey sees a future in which the people of Raleigh are once again the main attraction to visitors. Where the springs run clean and where the hills roll along filled with fruits and vegetables as well as herbs and spices. Torrey sees a place in which those with no address can finally have an address. Torrey sees a community in which we are all as one, working together and living amongst each other as God intended for His people. As I said, Torrey was saved on Saturday, December 18, 2021, for something much greater than himself. He was saved to fight against gun violence and to help end food insecurity in his own backyard. If you would like to know more about Torrey Bates' story and what happened on December 18, 2021, you can find his book: RISE, 5 Hours That Changed My Life on Amazon. This will explain the night in detail and highlight the miracles God performed that night. Torrey, who will call himself Yahweh's Walking Miracle, took a bullet, drove himself to the hospital, and 5 hours later walked out of the hospital heading home to his family.

CONFESSIONS OF A SOUTHERN BEAUTY QUEEN BY JULIE HINES MABUS (available 4/29; author is based in Oxford, MS, but the subject of the biography was raised in Memphis).

PILGRIM INTERRUPTED BY SUSAN CUSHMAN The title essay in this collection, “Pilgrim Interrupted,” is set on the island of Patmos, Greece, during one of Susan’s pilgrimages with her husband, Father Basil Cushman, an Orthodox priest. Pilgrimages. Orthodoxy. Icons. Monasteries. It’s all in here. But so are stories about mental health, caregiving, death, family, and writing, including a section on “place,” a key element in Southern literature. And how is Susan’s pilgrimage “interrupted”? By life itself. Pilgrim Interrupted is a collection of 35 essays, 3 poems, and 5 excerpts from Susan’s novels and short stories. Coming of age during the turbulent 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi; marrying young and adopting three children; leaving the Presbyterian Church of her childhood for the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith in 1987; Susan finally began to chronicle her journey in the early 2000s. Pilgrim Interrupted is her eighth book. Book launch and signing 6/7/22, 6pm at Novel

FINDING JUPITER BY KELIS ROWE Sparks fly when Orion and Ray meet for the first time at a roller rink in Memphis. But these star-crossed souls have a past filled with secrets that threaten to tear them apart before their love story even begins. Found poetry, grief, and fate collide in this powerful debut. Ray: Just once I’d like my birthday to be about me, and not the day my father died. I want to be Ray Jr., the tall girl from Memphis with the poetry beats and the braids that stay poppin’. And when I meet Orion at the skating rink, that’s exactly who I am. He pulls my hand, and instead of being defined by my past, he races me toward my future. Orion: When I dive into the pool, it’s just me and my heartbeat. There’s no dad, no dead sister, and no distracting noises. But I can’t hold my breath forever. And since I met Ray, I don’t want to. The closer we get, though, the more I see I’m not the only one caught in her wake. With a lyrical blend of found poetry and poignant prose, this stunning debut captures young Black love and a decades-old family secret that may shatter a romance that feels written in the stars.

In the late 1960s, Patsy Channing, a stunningly beautiful young woman, was suspended from the venerable Mississippi State College for Women for breach of conduct. The resulting scandal reached all the way to the Columbus courthouse, and the press ate it up. But Patsy's story starts long before that, living with a preoccupied and troubled mother in Memphis, Tennessee. As Patsy grows up, she buries the memories of her unspeakable childhood trauma and is determined to have a normal life. Music becomes her ticket out and a vehicle for the one thing she covets most--a chance to be crowned Miss America. In Confessions of a Southern Beauty Queen, Julie Hines Mabus provides a peek into that world--a world struggling through the civil rights movement, reeling from the death of JFK, and cutting loose with the musical innovations from Memphis and Detroit. Patsy develops a close friendship with a guitarist at Stax Recording Studio, giving her first-hand exposure to the early Memphis Soul Sound created by such greats as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and Sam & Dave. Confessions of a Southern Beauty Queen opens and closes with the end of Patsy's time at Mississippi State College for Women on that fateful spring morning in 1968 when she entered the Columbus courthouse. Patsy's story, marked with tragedy and triumph, mirrors that of a growing and evolving South, where change never comes easy.

Prepare for Takeoff: Jerry Christian Aircraft Sales By Sandi Butler Hughes Photography by McKendree Walker

“I

think there is something about an airplane. There is a little mystique about it,” smiles Jerry Christian. As a man who has spent his entire career in the aviation business, he knows the mystique well. Jerry is an accomplished pilot and the owner of Jerry Christian Aircraft Sales. Jerry began his career when he was in college at the University of Alabama in his hometown of Tuscaloosa. He began fueling planes as a lineman at the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport while attending college. He got his pilot’s license, and was building up his flying hours in addition to going to school and working to support his young family. His employer, Dixie Air, was a Cessna Distributor for three southern states. Through a program with Cessna, anyone working at the company who had a pilot’s license was encouraged to learn to sell airplanes. The week-long sales training happened to fall between his spring and summer college sessions, and Jerry seized the opportunity. A few weeks later, he made his first sale. “I sold an $8,000 airplane. I was making $2.00 an hour as a lineman, and that afternoon, I made $400. I was hooked, and I haven’t had a real job since,” he laughed. Jerry Christian Aircraft Sales ( JCAS) is located at Wilson Air Center, a bustling hub of flight activity. The day of our 4Memphis fashion shoot, we saw a variety of travelers coming and going from the FBO - a family with young children boarded a small plane; a jet marked “United States of America” carried a dignitary; and several businessmen with briefcases arrived in town for meetings. 50

Jerry said, “Airplanes should come with a warning label: ‘This machine will really make your business grow!’” The pandemic also created a surge in private aviation. Travelers had to adjust in 2020, and they aren’t going back. More than ever before, there is an increased interest in private travel. As more and more people switch to this kind of air travel, they realize the perks of comfort, safety, and convenience of going private. In the past two years, most everyone has heard about the inventory shortage in the housing market. The aircraft industry is also suffering with a similar inventory shortage problem. JCAS has a global network to source the right aircraft for business or pleasure. The team is led by Jerry, and is supported by Rhiannon Daugs, John Berra, and George Semmes. They bring decades of knowledge and experience to the complicated process of buying an airplane, as well as all being licensed pilots. In such a competitive market, it is more important than ever before to have an experienced team working for the buyer. As the 4Memphis team shot stunning looks from local retailers, the gleaming aircraft - from small prop planes to large jets - set the stage for summer excursions. Music playing on loud speakers filled the outdoor space at Wilson Air Center, and their staff was so very friendly and helpful. We postponed the shoot by one day because of approaching storms. The next day, the blue, clear skies made us ready for take-off, and Jerry Christian Aircraft Sales is just the team to assist with the best way to travel!

With a friendship spanning almost 20 years, God’s timing was finally upon us. With a magical, mega-surprise engagement on the front steps of Graceland on December 20, 2021, a new life of love, promise, and laughter was set into motion. We both have lived in the Nashville area for quite some time, but decided to return to Memphis (Andy’s hometown) to have a small ceremony at Graceland’s Chapel In The Woods on Saturday, March 26. Attended by our immediate families and a few very close friends, the ceremony featured scripture reading by Dawn’s son Brandon, and Andy’s son Cameron, with music from Andy’s son Daniel. Following the ceremony, the entire party enjoyed a fabulous dinner in a private room next door at the Guesthouse At Graceland. We then enjoyed a luxurious stay in the Peabody Hotel’s Presidential Suite. Our reception was one for the books! On Sunday, we traveled back to Nashville where the celebration continued at Soundcheck Studios, where about 125 guests enjoyed food from the Loveless Cafe and wine from Hindsight Vineyard. Musical performances by some of Andy’s bandmates in Sixwire, along with celebrity guests and friends including Steve Cropper, Wayne Nelson of Little River Band, John Elefante of Kansas, Al Paris of Kool & The Gang, plus actors Patrick Warburton and Charles Esten, and television personality Robin Meade, made the evening unforgettable! Blissfully happy is an understatement, to describe us! We finally got our happily ever after! -Dawn Hull Childs Location: Graceland’s Chapel In The Woods Photography: Kimberly Hill KimbaWayne Photography Caterer: Guesthouse At Graceland Wedding Coordinator: Beth Bomarito

A Look Back: CCC Chickasaw Golf Club was officially chartered by the State of Tennessee on January 12, 1922. The charter was submitted by John R. Flippin, S.T. Carnes, W.E. McGehee, Bethell Edrington, W.G. Thomas, Jas. L. McRee and Frank Pidgeon. The incorporators hired renowned Golf Course Architect William Langford to design the eighteen-hole course, par 72 layout. L.P. Jones held the low amateur score of 65 until 1995 when Wesley Hays scored a 63 to break the record. The Memphis Invitational (now the FedEx Classic) was held at Chickasaw in 1945. Then Amateur Golfer, Fred Haas, defeated golf great Byron Nelson, thereby ending Nelson’s eleven consecutive tour wins and setting the course professional record of 64 for 18 holes. Over the years the club has made many improvements to the historic course. In 2018 Golf Course Architect Bill Bergin of Bergin Golf Design was charged with modernizing the golf course while holding true to Langford’s original design. Recent course improvements include changes to the greens grass, adding a practice range, short range, and warmup area. Bill also established a Master Plan for the course and continues to visit the course several times annually to guide the club on the best next steps. CCC looks to the future with a proposed long-range plan that will transform the Club. This plan includes four indoor tennis courts, four outdoor pickleball courts, removal of the current indoor courts and replacing them with outdoor clay courts, matching the other newly renovated outdoor courts. The renovation plan also includes many upgrades to the existing Clubhouse, doubling the size of the current outdoor dining patio with a design allowing the membership to utilize the patio all year long, adding an adult dining room with a patio, and renovations to the existing pool area. These renovations will elevate Chickasaw Country Club, making it a true destination Club. -Jim Napolitano

Luncheon with Cameron Silver Photography by Mark Ramirez Social, A Shop for Gracious Living, hosted a luncheon featuring Cameron Silver, the King of Vintage. Held in the Winegarten Auditorium at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens, the sold-out crowd enjoyed a scrumptious lunch and presentation by Cameron. He shared fashion insights through the decades (which also is the name of his best-selling coffee table book and tony, upscale resale shop in Los Angeles). He encouraged women to fill their closets with fashions they love to wear. He also offered the three must-have pieces every woman needs: 1. a perfect, formal dress to wear to an 11th-hour invitation to a black tie event; 2. an evening bag because so often women have great bags, but not a great evening bag; 3. something to wear “when you meet the Pope,” or other situations where you need to be conservatively dressed. The festivities continued through the afternoon at Social with Silvertini cocktails, sweets, and book signing of DECADES and talking style with Cameron. The luncheon was part of the Social U series of experiences and learning - follow @SocialMemphisTN on Instagram for upcoming events!

Art events

“Creme” by Pinkney Herbert

As you may recall the past couple of years have been a little chaotic and confusing when it comes to scheduling performances (I am told this is an understatement). So when you see the International Blues Challenge listed below you are NOT reading the January/February issue; it is indeed happening in May. Like other canceled or postponed events, the IBCs are coming back at a non-traditional time. But most importantly, this spectacular event is back after a long absence, and it is being conveniently held during the same May timeslot as the Blues Music Awards. And, it is being held downtown while most of Memphis in May is going to Tiger Lane. It’s a lot to keep up with, but it is all good news. There’s jazz, opera, film, and more – back and very welcomed. Aside from returning events, there are some notable new things listed. Try the WYXR Stereo Sessions at the Memphis Listening Lab. Much to do, many choices. Thankfully. -Ken Hall
