From the Publisher Seek the Peace and Prosperity of the City in which I have placed you. Jeremiah 29:7 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, "Mephibosheth!" "Your servant," he replied. 7"Don't be afraid," David said to him, "for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan…2 Samuel 9: 6,7 6

This passage in 2 Samuel is the picture of grace and generosity from King David to the son of his friend, Jonathan. When your read the full chapter of 2 Samuel 9, you see that David reaches out to restore the fortunes of his friend Jonathan’s family. The friendship between David and Jonathan was written in a time that their backgrounds would not have allowed such a friendship. Jonathon was the child of King Saul and was to inherit the throne after his father’s death. David was the poor shepherd’s son who rose to fame through the killing of Goliath. Jonathan was never threatened by David, and in fact sided with David against his father recognizing David as the man God had called to be King after Saul, not himself. The story spotlights how a young man from the humblest beginning is raised up by God to be a force for good in God’s world despite the norms of society that the young man was born into. On December 3rd, my friend Brandon Bryant died from pancreatic cancer. Brand loved the Lord, lived for his wife, Trina Bryant and their two sons, Chandler and Sky. You would often find on his Facebook feed, messages from his church Brown Missionary Baptist Church. He was active in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity whose motto is “First of All, Servant of All, We Shall Transcend All, “Alpha Phi Alpha dedicated itself to defend the rights and promote the responsibilities of African Americans.” Brandon and I meet in Dallas in 1995 at a Promise Keepers meeting, after that we spent years together in a Friday morning bible study. We were both unmarried working in the financial industry; we met our wives, were honored to be in each other’s weddings and started our families. Our friendship is not one that could have been imagined at the time of our birth given the different in environment of our births. We were both born in Memphis during the '60s and that is where our similarities end.

Brandon Bryant I was born at the Baptist Hospital into the East Memphis white world, educated in private schools with no relationship or dependence on the Lord. I would come to know the Lord a few years before I met Brandon, and he was instrumental in helping me to understand God’s grace and my responsibility to my fellow man. Brandon was born at John Gaston Hospital into a rural North Mississippi world affected by the segregation of the time. His home had no indoor plumbing until he was 15 years old. He was baptized at the age of 12 at Dean Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Cormorant, Mississippi. He was laid to rest at the same church’s cemetery whose headstones tell the story of a people that have worshipped and been a part of building our community since the late 1800’s. Brandon’s faith and what he gave to the world was built on the generations that came before him. Brandon earned a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi, became a professor teaching nighttime accounting classes until his family and work duties limited his time. At the time of his death, he was a Senior Vice President with BancorpSouth. Brandon, along with other members of our bible study, spent hours praying for each other’s families. When we would discuss our childhoods, it was hard to imagine worlds more different, but what all our childhoods had in common were families who wanted more for their children. The unifying thread of our group prayers for each other was that our children would love the Lord at an early age and would make a positive difference in the world that God called them to serve. Brandon Bryant was born into a world of segregation, grew into a man of God, loved his fellow man, was successful in every area of life that he was called to touch. He raised two exceptional young men that have been given the opportunity to build on the legacy of their father. Brandon, as we mourn your loss, we celebrate that God has called you home and declared to you, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Matthew 25:23 Seek the Peace and Prosperity of Memphis. Party on the Plaza Church Health Church Health held their biggest event of the year, Party on the Plaza, recently. Once again, it was back on the Crosstown Plaza on a crisp November evening. Live music was provided by Big Ass Truck, and guests enjoyed dancing and dining al fresco. Many fire pits and twinkle lights added to the festive atmosphere. The event is also known for a stellar wine pull - and this year was better than ever. For more ways you can support Church Health, visit churchhealth.org. Photography by Mark Ramirez

Our wedding day took place on a perfect, latesummer day in the mountains surrounding Vail. We were joined by our closest family and friends, made up of travelers from 23 different states. Our time leading up to the wedding was spent with my bridesmaids and family in our amazing rental home. We enjoyed looking out over the mountain views, listening to our favorite music, and catching up on old times. The trip up to the scenic mountain-side venue was eventful to say the least. We were lucky enough to see a black bear, a mountain lion, and other wildlife in what I felt was the perfect, unexpected addition to our day. Once at the venue the bridesmaids continued to get ready and excitedly reflect on the afternoon and night to come. The ceremony was at 4 pm in a wonderful space overlooking Piney Lake and the beautiful Gore range. My husband, Alex, and I were fortunate to take some amazing pictures with the help of our photographer to capture the once-in-a-lifetime moment in all its glory. Dinner, drinks, and plenty of dancing were to follow! I was incredibly lucky to spend the most perfect day in the most gorgeous place with the people I love most. -Grace

On the surface, Heart Ball is a community dedicated to saving lives gathering together one night a year for an empowering and celebratory gala. But the Mid-South Heart Ball, hosted at the Peabody Hotel on February 19, is so much more. For more than 40 years it’s been a unifying event to raise awareness and motivation, and now that collective power extends beyond the ballroom and into the community with efforts inspired by and developed with its most dedicated attendees. "Our support for the American Heart Association has been motivated in large part by the impact heart disease has had on our families and friends. But we also recognize the disproportionate impact heart disease has on others in the Mid-South. Our hope is that through Heart Ball, we can raise awareness about serious health issues facing our community, while making strides to close the gap. Join us in our commitment to tackle food insecurity, provide greater access to preventative care, and establish greater diversity in science and healthcare careers with the goal of building a pathway to greater health equity." - your 2022 Mid-South Heart Ball Chairs, Peter & Judy Felsenthal and Bob & Tracy Moore www.event.gives/midsouthhb

September 18, 2021, will be etched in our minds forever. We began the day at the Hudsmith family lake house dancing to 2000's hits as we took turns getting “wedding ready.” After the final touches, the girls attended a lovely bridesmaid luncheon, hosted by my Great Aunt, at Odette’s. Her traditional gift is a sugar bowl from our wedding china to “keep our marriage sweet.” Meanwhile, Ryan and his groomsmen feasted and got ready for the day ahead of them. As they arrived at Turtle Point, it all sank in as the final touches were being made on the hand-carved arch made by Ryan’s father, Jeff McKinney. I could smell the romance in the air as we turned into Turtle Point. The canopy of pine trees glistened with the freshly sprinkled mist from the rain. As I gazed at the beautiful entrance along Wilson Lake, the butterflies hit, as I was about to see the man of my dreams become my husband. As the rain fell, my groom was patiently waiting to see me in my elegant dress. Our “first look” was so special exchanging wedding gifts. Ryan’s gift to me was a Bible with a personal, handwritten note and I gave him a watch engraved with “I love you forever, ‘Em.” As time for the ceremony approached, the rain kept coming with some guests braving the weather with their umbrellas and others watching from the covered balcony. Just as my father and I linked arms to walk down the aisle, the rain subsided. Chris Carter, of Christ Church Memphis, delivered the special sermon. Closing the ceremony, together with our guests, we sang “Bind us Together.” This song is a reminder that we are bonded in love by Jesus and the love of our dear families and friends. We had the time of our lives dancing the night away. Ryan’s family restored a 1969 GTO that carried us away from the glow of the sparklers and a night to remember. Each guest took home “Wedding Sugar" we created from my “Take Off For Good” business. This day was long anticipated and was the start of the ultimate adventure. We may have endured a little rain while “tying the knot” but supposedly a wet knot is hard to untie! - Emilee

We are native Memphians and Rhodes alums, and our story began in 2012 when we had our first date. Over the next few years, we called Midtown Memphis our home. In 2014, we added our adorable miniature poodle Pumpernickel into the mix. Three years later, with new graduate degrees and jobs, we packed our bags and moved across the country to Seattle. We love our new city, but knew that for our wedding Memphis was the right place to celebrate. We held our wedding on October 23, 2021, at Annesdale Mansion. Built in 1850, this location captured a piece of history and the beautiful Southern charm of Memphis. It reminded us of Mollie Fontaine Lounge, where you could often find us when we lived in Memphis enjoying a glass of wine and live music. In fact, that’s why it was so special that the owner of Mollie’s, chef Karen Carrier, and the crew at Another Roadside Attraction were able to prepare the most amazing food for our event. Rev. Elizabeth H. Doolin officiated a poignant and personal ceremony in the gardens surrounded by flowers, family, and friends. We wanted the evening to include some of our favorite things: a string quartet, a live jazz band, a poet providing guests with personalized poems, a signature cocktail named after our dog, and even a magician! We would like to thank our guests for celebrating with us, many of whom traveled from all over the US and Canada. Special thanks to our vendors, our amazing planner, Betsy McKay with Salt Style & Events, and family: Linda Ash, David Bryan, and Dale and Vickie Grissom for supporting us and making this milestone and event so incredible. -Steve & Andrew

Seeds, Berries, and Roots in Your Drink By Sherri McCalla, Herb Garden Curator, Memphis Botanic Garden Culinary Staging by Faye Brown Photos by Jill Maybry This is the time of the year that Herb Garden volunteers and I gather all the plant material with seeds together that we have collected over the growing season. We separate the seeds from the other bits of plant matter and then package the cleaned seeds for storage, sale, and swap. With seeds on my mind, these dark, damp, and often cold winter days send me searching my recipe box for drinkable warmth. Many of the seasonings that you may be familiar with are seeds. Cardamom, fennel, caraway, dill, sesame, rye, mustard, star anise, nutmeg, cumin, cloves, and black pepper are common spices that can be purchased in almost every grocery store--all of which are the seeds of a plant. The berries of some plants are used for seasoning as well; juniper, allspice, sumac, elder, and rose hips come to my mind (although some of those are only found in specialty stores). Berries include the fruit covering as well as multiple seeds. The crushed pepper berry that is on the table at most pizza establishments includes the seeds of the pepper as well as the fruit. Caution is required of hot peppers as seeds are generally hotter than the pepper flesh; proceed with caution if you traverse the realm of the truly hot peppers such as Reaper, Ghost, Apocalypse Scorpion, Scotch Bonnet, et cetera. That being said, there are some spices that are not seed, berry, leaf, or stem but are the actual root of a plant. Ginger, turmeric, and galangal are a few examples of rhizotomy rooty spices. This winter warm yourself with a few of my favorite seed, berry, and root flavored drinks:

Herbal Toddy: Brew one tea bag of herb of choice in 8 ounces of almost boiling water. Let steep for 5-10 minutes, covered. Squeeze the tea bag and remove. Add a tablespoon of local honey. Stir. Add 1 ounce whiskey or bourbon and a squeeze of lemon. Stir. Enjoy.

Mulled Wine: 1 bottle red wine 3 cups orange juice 1 8 ¼ oz can pineapple juice 1 cinnamon stick ½ cup sugar 16 slices of lemon/halved 4 Tablespoons water 8 whole, freshly cracked peppercorns 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 whole star anise 4 whole cloves 2 whole green cardamom pods Place all ingredients in a non-reactive pot and bring to a simmer – do NOT boil.

Aztec Hot Xocoatl Mix: 1 cup powdered sugar ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup coconut milk powder or milk powder 1 teaspoon arrowroot powder a handful of chocolate chips (the higher the cocoa content, the better), or pieces from a chocolate bar (smashed) 1 ½ teaspoon Vietnamese Cinnamon powder (Penzeys Spices carries this here in Memphis) 1 teaspoon dried chipotle powder ¼ teaspoon Real Salt or Himalayan salt Combine all ingredients. Mix. Add 3 Tablespoons of the

mixture with hot water, almond milk, coconut milk, milk, or cream. Stir until dissolved.

Spiced Cider: (16 servings) 1 gallon fresh apple cider 1 orange, sliced into ¼” rounds and halved 12 whole cloves 6 whole, freshly cracked whole allspice 5 cinnamon sticks (approx. 3 inch long) plus more for a garnish if desired 2 inches fresh ginger root cut into ¼” slices 15 freshly cracked whole peppercorns 5 star anise Optional: 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg (this can be held aside as a garnish) optional: add ½ to ¾ cup packed brown sugar if you would like a sweeter beverage Optional: 6 ounces cranberry juice. Place all ingredients into a slow cooker and turn on low for 4 hours or high for 2 hours, then turn to warm for drinking. Alternatively, all ingredients can be placed into a large pot and brought to a simmer on the stove. Simmer for 1 hour. Strain as you pour into a mug. If you’d like to spike your drink, place 1 ounce of bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, or rum into a mug then fill with the hot cider. Garnish with a sprinkle of ground or grated nutmeg (instead of adding into the mix at the beginning), an orange slice half, and/or a cinnamon stick or cinnamon or cherry-flavored candy stick.

The first and easiest decision we made was that we wanted a destination wedding. After 2020 lockdowns, and time apart from the people we love… we figured everyone needed a vacation! The only problem was I had no idea what I was doing, lol. Luckily, and one of the perks of being from a small town, our neighbor and close family friend of the Rose’s swooped in to the rescue—It’s a bird, it’s a plane… oh wait, even better, it’s Becky! She held our hands through the process of finding the perfect location, venue, and safely deposited us into the hands of our wedding planners (Paradise Wedding Events, PWE). PWE connected us with the best vendors; I may be biased, but I believe that to be an objective fact. I knew it would be beautiful, because you know… it’s the beach… It's hard to mess that up, but when I arrived for hair and make up I was absolutely floored. Every detail was perfect, even the things I thought I didn’t care about (like napkins - thank you to my mom for convincing me otherwise - she’s the real MVP - love you Mama) came together into exactly what I had envisioned but somehow so much better than I could have ever dreamt. It truly was the best day of our lives, a dream come true. Getting to marry my best friend in the world didn’t hurt either. While we knew we wanted the ceremony in Mexico, we also wanted to be able to celebrate with everyone knowing that there would be a lot of friends and loved ones who wouldn’t be able to make it to the nuptials. So, we decided to have a domestic reception in my family’s new home of Memphis, TN (recent transplants from Fayetteville, AR). What started out as an idea to have a backyard barbeque took a turn when my mom took me to the Annesdale Mansion. I’m pretty sure I squealed when I got out of the car when we first arrived on the property. I instantly became 12 again, all I could think was “it’s like if Secret Garden and Narnia had a baby”, which for me is the highest praise. Looking around at the stately architecture and grandeur of the property, the decision was made, bye bye BBQ and hello Black Tie. The rest is history. Pure magic. -Brittan

Will and I never met while we were both at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, but our paths finally crossed back home in Memphis when we were waiting tables at Flight Restaurant. After dating a while, on a downtown Memphis rooftop at sunset, Will proposed with a ring including stones and a setting from four generations of his family. As soon as our planning began in earnest, all the uncertainty and worry of Covid-19 hit. Generous friends of Will’s family came through with a lovely, almost-pandemic-proof offer: why not hold the wedding in their garden, a gorgeous three-acre treasure tucked away in east Memphis? That kind invitation allowed everything else to fall into place easily, since an all-outdoor event would alleviate most pandemic-related worries for our friends and family, and let us add lots of special, personal touches to the celebration. The weekend kicked off with a New Orleans-style rehearsal dinner at Will’s parents’ home, complete with a second line parade down the block to a post-toast party. We exchanged vows on the lawn, with a collection of vintage rugs forming an aisle and ceremony space, officiated by the Reverend Horace Tipton, a long-time family friend. Our Llewellin Setter, Penny Lane, served as flower dog, and thoroughly approved of the party favors: giant dog biscuits for our guests to take home to their furry friends. Dave Killebrew played some of our favorite songs on acoustic guitar during the ceremony, and “Here Comes The Sun” as my father walked me down the aisle. As the sun set, the reception began with a cocktail hour in the wooded, lower garden. A few of our former co-workers tended bar, while guests nibbled from a charcuterie grazing table and raw bar. Will had requested a “groom’s games” area, and it was easy to make him happy! It featured his vintage canoe loaded with ice, beer, and seltzers, along with a giant Jenga game and custom-painted cornhole boards with our initials. Guests then moseyed up candle-lit gravel paths to the lawn around the pool and rose garden, where the Acme Memphis Band played under the stars all evening. My talented friend and bridesmaid Hayley Daniels stepped up to the mic and brought the guests to their feet with “Make You Feel My Love.” Leonard’s Barbecue is Will’s favorite, and along with delicious caramel wedding cake made for a crowd-pleasing outdoor supper. We made a sparkler-lit exit in a classic deep-red 1946 Ford Deluxe Convertible, met up with friends downtown for an after-party, enjoyed a lovely send-off Sunday brunch given by friends, and honeymooned in Belize. - Parker

A “Happily Ever After” with a little pixie dust and a lot of family love is the best way I can think of to describe our wedding day! As someone who has always loved all things involving princesses and fairy tales, I dreamed of my wedding day from a very young age. I’m the type of person who loves pinning ornate, detailed wedding cakes on Pinterest and watching “Say Yes to the Dress” on TLC every Saturday. On September 18th, 2021, I married the love of my life at St. Louis Catholic Church. It was the best day of my life. My mom took me by our reception venue, Ridgeway Country Club, prior to the ceremony so I could take everything in before guests arrived. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw all of the beautiful flowers, twinkling lights, and gold decorations that covered the venue. The support of my bridesmaids as we belted Disney songs on the way to the church made the day all the more special. However, nothing could compare to the moment the large church doors opened for me to walk down the aisle, and I saw my future husband’s face. Any nerves I had felt immediately left me as I made my way toward him - each of us instantly hugging and holding back laughter as we joked in each other’s ears. I had never felt happier in my life! Our reception ended the day in the most magical of ways as we celebrated with all our family and friends, eating delicious food and dancing the night away to an extravagant celebration at Ridgeway. -Teresa Ceremony Location: St. Louis Catholic Church Reception Location: Ridgeway Country Club Photographer: Russell Hays Photography Caterer: Ridgeway Country Club Wedding Gown: Ballew Bridal Wedding Gown Designer: Essence of Australia Videographer: Jamie Hill Florist: Holliday Flowers and Events Vocalist: John Angotti Strings: Beth Luscombe DJ: Jim Steinbrecher Cake: Frost Bakery JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2022

Decorative Furniture Painting with The Truffle Pig Photos courtesy of The Truffle Pig Dreary winter days are ideal for a painting project, and there is not a more simple way to transform or freshen up a piece of furniture than with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®. If you have ever used chalk paint, you know how fantastic it is. If not, grab a paint brush and try it out! It is a decorative furniture paint, and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® is designed to be easy to use, quick and reliable. Very rarely does it require any preparation, such as sanding or priming, plus it can be used indoors or outside on just about any surface. Versatility is another feature of Chalk Paint®. It can be used to paint wood, metal, melamine, and flooring. It can be even used to dye fabric and paint glass! Experts at The Truffle Pig in Collierville show us in a few easy steps how to create a unique and special piece!

2

1 1. If your furniture has any hardware, such as handles, remove those if possible. Use a damp cloth (avoid any harsh chemicals) and give it a quick clean. Stir your Chalk Paint® color. You can use a stir stick or anything else you have on hand. Dip your brush in, and apply the paint straight onto the furniture. As you paint, move the brush in every direction and all over the piece. Wait for the first coat to be touch dry. Depending on the climate, this could take 1-3 hours. Once dry, apply a second coat in the same manner. Wait for the paint to be fully dry. 2. Next, apply Chalk Paint® Wax in the same manner as the paint. Use a brush or lintfree cloth to apply in all directions. Work in sections removing any excess with a lint-free cloth as you go. Make sure every bit of paintwork has been waxed. 3. And that’s it! You can use the piece of furniture as soon as the wax is dry to the touch, but please note it will take up to two weeks to reach its full hardness (known as the ‘curing period’). During this time, take extra care with the piece.

Art events

Squared by Becky McRae show through Gallery Ten Ninety-One

A new year with new opportunities. We all know now that predicting the future is a fool’s errand, but as of the time of this writing there is, as you can see below, a really nice array of arts events planned. Theater and musical productions, art exhibits, films – some familiar names and some new ones. If we have learned nothing else, surely we now know this: go while you can. Don’t delay or wait until next month. Go now and see and feel and enjoy. And let all express thanks to artists, musicians, exhibit organizers, event producers, and all involved who have been in ”hurry up and wait” mode. Cheers for the new year! -Ken Hall

Retail in Retrospect Brodnax Jewelers By Sandi Butler Hughes

For our annual 4Memphis Wedding Issue, the Retail in Retrospect feature spotlights Brodnax Jewelers as we celebrate local businesses from another era in Memphis retail history. If you’ve enjoyed a dinner at Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar, it is in the Brodnax Building and original location for George T. Brodnax, Inc. On the corner of Main Street and Monroe Avenue, the building was built in 1916 in the heart of downtown retail commerce. George T. Brodnax, Inc. was founded in 1897 and grew into a gold- and silversmith, and diamond merchant with a world-wide clientele. At one time, Brodnax sold more Rolex watches than any other retailer in the entire world. In addition to their store-front retail business, Brodnax also had a robust mail-order catalog business. They were second-only to mail-order pioneer, Sears, Roebuck & Co. They received orders from kings, queens, and monarchs around the globe, and claimed to sell more jewelry than the Sears catalog, which was quite an accomplishment in 1916! Through the decades, Brodnax added retail locations in Laurelwood, Southland Mall, Raleigh Springs Mall, Hickory Ridge Mall, and Mall of Memphis. After 80 years downtown, it was announced in February, 1978, the once-flagship location was closing. In 1989, Brodnax Jewelry stores became Bailey Banks & Biddle, a part of Zales Corporation. Scores of Mid-South brides delighted in an engagement ring from Brodnax. In addition to jewelry, the stores offered beautiful wedding registry gifts of china, silverware, and stemware. A bit of Memphis retail history, where dreams began and heirlooms were purchased, to 2022 where friends gather, and celebrations continue at Main and Monroe.
