The Rices wrote the book on divorce. Literally. The Complete Guide to Divorce Practice is published by the American Bar Association and is recognized as the standard reference for divorce lawyers across the nation for decades. For the 30th Anniversary Edition, the Rices co-author their book with over a thousand pages of insight, experience, and techniques. Lawyers seek out Larry’s expertise and he has lectured on divorce in most states and in some foreign countries. As the only Super Lawyer in the Mid-South certified as a Family Law Specialist, Larry Rice spends most of his time practicing law with the Rice Divorce Team. Thomson Reuters repeatedly ranks Mr. Rice as one of the top 100 lawyers in all fields of law in Tennessee. Larry received The National Academy of Family Attorneys Top Ten Attorney Client Satisfaction Award and is rated on AVVO as 10 out of 10. Nick Rice grew up with the law. After graduating from CBHS and UT-Knoxville, Nick clerked while attending The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Nick has lectured on several occasions and was recognized as one of Super Lawyers’ Rising Stars. Nick is rated on AVVO as 10 out of 10. He is a Rule 31 Family Law Mediator. The Rice Divorce Team is a practice group within Rice, Amundsen & Caperton, PLLC. The Rice Divorce Team is exclusively committed to family law - from prenuptial agreements to final decrees, from parenting time to property division and everything in between, and it includes: Larry Rice; Nick Rice; Erin O’Dea; Jessica Farmer Ferrante; Chelsea Knox; Faith Sanford; Christopher Burt; Jennifer Goodin; Andrea Schultz, ACP; Susan New, ACP; Tyler Walker; Cyndy McAfee; Lisa Blackledge; Krista Burt; Ken Schultz; Linsey Boatner; C.J. Parrish; Irris Williams and Blake Alford. The team applies generations of legal experience, nationally recognized expertise, and up-to-date technology to lead their clients through negotiations, mediation, arbitration or litigation. The depth of The Rice Divorce Team’s personnel provides the ability to tailor representation to each client’s individual needs and goals. While the team is proud of courtroom success, their greatest satisfaction often comes from obtaining a quick and quiet settlement favorable to their client. Divorce is difficult. Divorce is made worse by misinformation people have about divorce. The Rices’ guide for clients, “About Divorce”, is available at aboutdivorce.com.

From the Publisher Seek the Peace and Prosperity of the City in which I have placed you. Jeremiah 29:7 "And when the builders laid the foundations of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets…11 And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord… 6:4 … Let the cost be paid from the royal treasury… 5 And also let the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that is in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, be restored and brought back to the temple…" Ezra 3:10 The history written about in the Book of Ezra may seem to be an odd story to write about when calling for a celebration of Thanksgiving and Peace. The Persian King, Cyrus had just conquered Babylon. He then ordered the return of the Jews to Jerusalem and to rebuild the House of the Lord to celebrate that the Lord God of Heaven had given King Cyrus all the kingdoms of the world.

Jim Walker

Just as Ezra wrote about the victorious homecoming of the Jews, we will celebrate the liberation from this virus. It is not here yet, but we are entering the season of celebrating Thanksgiving and Peace, and despite captivity we have a lot to be thankful for. First, the virus death toll has been much less than first projected. Not to diminish the tremendous loss for the families that have been affected by death and in some cases lasting effects from damage caused by the virus, but just gratefulness that it has not been worse.

Secondly, the economy of the nation has held up despite our fears that it would not. There has been tremendous economic loss and pain for many in certain industries, such as the small restaurants and business owners whose life savings are at risk. As a small business owner, I am grateful that the broader economy is surprisingly resilient, because when we are soon released from captivity, we will be able to rebuild. Those who To translate the story to our modern day understanding, a have stable jobs are in better financial shape than ever before pagan King is fulfilling the promises of God to the Jews, His because many have been able to refinance their homes and chosen people. The pagan King gives the Jews their country save money as they quarantine in their neighborhoods. This back. The Jewish people give thanks to God for the peace and means good things for small business owners when we are beginning of prosperity He has given them. released from captivity. REMEMBER TO SHOP LOCAL!!! In fact, 4Memphis’ mission statement from Jeremiah 29:7, “Seek the peace and prosperity of the City in which I have placed you,” is the answer God gave the Jews in captivity in Babylon when they asked Jeremiah when God was going to return them to Jerusalem. Jeremiah’s answer was “Not now, work for the peace and prosperity of where you live now, I will keep my promise to return you to Jerusalem when the 70 years of captivity are complete.” The Book of Ezra is the story of how God worked to return the Jews, protect the Jews and prosper the Jews in their return to Jerusalem. Today the world is in captivity to a virus that has changed all of us. We all feel that we have no control over the simplest things that we have taken for granted for years, the purchase of toilet paper or the ability to go to the doctor. The virus has given us a shared experience which has drawn us closer to our neighbors but has led to a nation divided by the political class as they prey on our fears for their own political gains. In my neighborhood, we have pulled our lawn chairs out and spent time together in ways we have never done before. The virus captivity has brought neighborhoods together and returned children to their homes giving parents the privilege of knowing and living with children that they love who are now young adults. 20

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

Finally, we should be thankful for the reminder of what is important: the health of family and closeness with our neighbors and friends. There is an old saying, “don’t sweat the small stuff and it’s all small stuff.” This virus shouts to us what we used to battle and fight for, is really “small stuff.” Peace, the call of Jeremiah, “seek the peace” is almost as if peace should be a verb. It is an action we stand for it; it calls on each of us to change our attitude towards each other. Thankfulness is a positive attitude for our circumstances. Peace must be a positive attitude to those we don’t agree with or who have wronged us, “seek the peace.” It is a calling for each of us to work on our attitude towards others, and it is not dependent on the attitude others have towards us. We are in total control of our attitudes; we can’t control the attitudes of others. Love what God loves and try to love as God loves. Captivity has put us all in bondage, but it cannot dictate your attitude towards others - only you can do that!!!

Celebrate Thanksgiving and the Peace of Memphis. Jim Walker

Go Red For Women Virtual Luncheon September 29, 2020

heart.org

Luncheon “guests” of the 2020 Go Red For Women Luncheon participated by tuning in to the virtual Go Red For Women Luncheon online. The hour long event featured heart-healthy lifestyle and nutrition tips, and stories from women who have experienced heart and stroke related health issues. Here’s to a heart-healthy 2021, and next year's event chairs are Susan Springfield and Leigh Anne Tuohy!

1. The Go Red for Women campaign empowers women to get healthy and in turn encourages others to be examples of good health and well-being. It’s no longer just about sharing facts. We must take a stand for our own health and inspire the women we love to do the same. We must demand to be counted, equally represented and treated fairly when it comes to cardiovascular care,” said Katina Rankin of Local 24 News. 2. “I knew there was something wrong. I continued to go to doctors, but nothing was showing up. Finally, I insisted on having a heart cath (cardiac catheterization)… and they found I had a 90% blockage. Women—we must listen to our bodies,” said designer and philanthropist, Pat Kerr Tigrett when describing her personal experience with heart disease. 3. The signature Go Red for Women component, the Survivor Fashion show went virtual this year! Here’s stroke survivor, Dr. Mary McDonald in one of her favorite red outfits! 4. Healthy eating inspiration for the day by Hannah Peters, nutritionist at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She showed luncheon guests how to make her easy and healthy turkey meatballs and zoodles (zucchini noodles) recipe! 24

Art Events

o many things have changed this year but there is one constant in this season: you will be able to rake leaves as usual! Not encouraging? Okay, try this - all the arts groups are doing their very best to bring you quality entertainment. Trust me, events are not necessarily easier because they are virtual. So let’s all be thankful to our arts organizations for making extra efforts to keep it going. Now keep in mind even in a non-pandemic year, the calendar slackens a bit this time of year. Other than the holiday chestnuts such as The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol, late fall/early winter is a slow down for art groups as the public shifts focus to holiday parties and family gatherings. The good news is that we still, in 2020, have a chance to enjoy a locally-produced version of The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol, plus a good deal more. Buy a ticket, make a donation, thank an artist or performer…after all, ‘tis the season!

traight out of Memphis, Kate and Daniel were instantly peas in a pod. “I met the girl I’m going to marry” were the first words out of Daniel’s mouth to his parents the day he met Kate. Both grew up in Memphis and met during a summer in between college semesters. Kate’s siblings are everything to her, and sure enough it was at the pool with her sisters that she crossed paths with Daniel. Just like her brother George, Daniel graduated from The U.S Naval Academy. Kate knew the drill! If you haven’t picked up on the common themes here, family and service are everything to this couple. Once Daniel proposed, Kate knew she’d plan her ceremony at First Evangelical. She grew up going to that church and her sister was married there as well! Sure enough, it all came together with a U.S. Navy sword arch on the front steps of that very church. As far as family is concerned however, Kate’s siblings were a wedding priority! We did a “first look” with her brothers and her dad which was absolutely magic. This will forever be something unique, different and hard to forget. As you can see from the family photos, nothing but laughs from this amazing crew. Cheers and all the congratulations to Kate and Daniel!

Marie Ford Health Tid-Bits

We have been fighting an invisible enemy this year with Covid-19. Boy, has it been a tough battle. Those of us on the frontline of healthcare continue to fight for you, your families, and ourselves. We are called to care for others and feel honored to do so. As you know our flu and cold season is here. We must arm ourselves with healthy immune systems and be prepared. With so much misinformation and confusion out there I thought I might share a little insight on ways to help you provide a little extra support to your immune system. I’m sure you’ve been to your local pharmacy or grocery store lately, and have seen the sea of supplements that are available. It can be quite overwhelming when looking at those bottles even for those of us who work in healthcare. Where should you start? How much should you take? How often do you need to take them? Are they quality vitamins? Are they safe? Often times, we walk away in frustration because we just aren’t sure. What about all the talk about IV vitamin therapy? Does it really work? Is it safe? IV Vitamin and Hydration Therapy has been a go-to treatment for celebrities for years, and has been used recently in hospitals by physicians for addon treatment during Covid-19. There is a lot to be said about Vitamin C and it’s powerful antioxidant properties. Magnesium, zinc and vitamin D all play an important roll in immune function. By giving vitamins intravenously it bypasses the gut, and enters the blood stream immediately. When taking oral supplements a lot of your nutrients are lost during the digestion process. There is also the added stomach upset that can accompany supplements especially in larger doses. IV vitamin therapy can be a great option for immune support to help defend your body against sickness, shorten the duration of illness, and improve overall wellbeing. There are many options for IV therapy. You should find a reputable provider to decide which 38

therapy or IV fits your individual needs. IV therapy is a safe and effective treatment when done correctly. You should choose someone who knows about IV therapy, and make sure he/she has been appropriately trained and is qualified to be doing those types of therapies. Your provider should take a thorough medical history and discuss your goals before initiating IV therapy. For those who find that IV therapy isn’t the right choice, there are oral supplements that can also provide immune support. Just keep in mind that absorption may be a problem and you’ll likely need to take multiple doses daily to avoid stomach upset. Check with your healthcare provider to be sure you are taking the right supplements, correct amounts, and that they won’t interfere with your current medications if you are taking any. Here are some of the most common supplements that help support your immune system: ● ● ● ● ●

Vitamin C Zinc Melatonin Vitamin D Magnesium

You should always check with your healthcare provider prior to initiating any medications or supplements. I wish you well, and continued good health in days ahead. If you are interested in learning more about IV vitamin therapy or would like to schedule an appointment please call:
