For Equine Leaders’ Train the Trainer Bring your horse, or just yourself, and join Muffy Knox for a weekend that’s focused on training leaders to teach their members the skills required for Levels 1-3 Mounted Assessments. Gain a fuller understanding of the Levels 1-3 assessment skills, as well as new techniques for helping members to achieve their mounted skill development goals.

Muffy Knox is a well know clinician, trainer, instructor and judge with over 30 years of experience as an equine educator. Muffy was an instructor with the Olds College’s Equine Science program for 15 years and is a certified Equine Canada Level 2 Western Coach.
Come and learn how to lead your Cleaver Kids to success through hands on learning. This training opportunity is a great way to network with other leaders of Cleaver Kids, learn more about Cleaver Kids requirements and skill development areas and how to enhance the club’s program plan for your 6-8 year olds. The training will also include tips for effectively involving Cleaver Kids in the club and ensuring that each of your Cleaver Kids successfully transitions into a junior 4-H member once they meet the age requirement! So come on, embrace your inner Cleaver Kid for a day of learning and fun at the Alberta 4-H Centre!

Equine Leaders’ Forum Join fellow equine project leaders from around the province for sessions and speakers that will assist you in working with project members throughout the 4-H year. This year’s schedule is shaping up to be a fantastic one, and will include Equine Project Speed Dating, where you’ll meet new counterparts and swap ingenious ideas! Sessions on games for teaching theory and effective lesson planning have also been slated. The Provincial Equine Advisory Committee has also tentatively secured speakers who will cover topics such as psychology in the saddle, western dressage, trail challenges and how they can test the ability of members and their horses to work as a team. Chaperone Travel Opportunities 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress Travel to our nation’s capital with the outstanding senior 4-H members who received this travel opportunity via the Selections program. An always challenging, but inspiring opportunity, the 44th 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress will be no different. Citizenship Congress 2016 will deepen members’ understanding of governance and public policy, nurture their communication skills, and expand their horizons as they discover Canada through other 4-H members’ eyes. Nominate an Individual or Group for the Golden Clover Award The Golden Clover Award recognizes individuals or groups who have exhibited outstanding leadership while making a special contribution to 4-H in Alberta. This special contribution may have been an innovative idea, project, activity or event that has made a significant difference at a club, district, region or provincial level. A nomination can be completed by any 4-Her by submitting a Golden Clover Award Nomination Form along with three letters of support to council@4hab.com. Nominations will be reviewed by the 4-H Council of Alberta and the award will be presented at the 2016 4-H Alberta Leaders’ Conference. November 15

Nominate a 4-H Alberta Leader for the 4-H Leader of the Year Award Volunteer leaders are the lifeblood of the 4-H program. Members, show them your appreciation and nominate them for the prestigious National 4-H Volunteer Leader of the Year award. A winning leader from every province will receive a $100 cash prize, while their club will win a celebratory pizza party – a way for members to thank all of their leaders. Meanwhile, one national winner will receive a prize package including a trip to the 2016 4-H Canada Annual General Meeting in Calgary, the opportunity to attend the 2017 Leadership Summit in Ottawa, and a $1000.00 cash prize. For
4-H Canada Science Fair Working individually or in partners, members in Grade 7 – Grade 12 can create a project around any theme that interests and inspires them. Some members may choose to do a science fair project that compliments their club or4-H project, or they may decide to do something completely unrelated! They can conduct an experiment, design an invention, or perform research.
Virtual Round The Virtual Round will involve members submitting their projects to be judged virtually. Projects will follow normal science project protocol, but instead of displays, members create PowerPoint presentations. Resources will be made available to assist members with their projects and prior to the December deadline there will be at least two different Q&A sessions. Members register directly with 4-H Canada at register.4-hcanada.ca and in January 2016 up to 35 finalists from this round will be selected for the Semi-Finalist Round.
Become a Key Member As a Key Member, you’ll be an official champion of the 4-H member experience. By sharing your time and insight with members and clubs in your district, you’ll be gaining a broader 4-H network and a long list of skills that will make your resume shine. This is a flexible leadership role that allows senior members to take their 4-H experience to the next level while helping other members to see and embrace all that 4-H is. Senior Members’ Conference (SMC)
The Semi-Finalist Round will involve the semi-finalists travelling to Dalhousie University to compete in an in-person science fair. They will be able to present their projects to judges, meet 4-Hers from across the country, and participate in science programming around Truro and Halifax. The winning projects will move on to compete in the Canada-Wide Science Fair.
SMC is a weekend that gives senior 4-H members the chance to meet and connect with fellow 4-Her’s from across the province who are in the exact same position they are – preparing to transition into life after high school. Whether they’re headed off to post-secondary, to start a career or to embark on a trip, they probably don’t really know what to expect or how they’re going to balance it all. Speakers, sessions and activities chosen and designed with input from the outstanding 4-H Alberta Ambassadors, who have just completed this phase of life themselves, will leave senior members feeling better equipped for what lies ahead. Plus, they’ll have a whole new network of friends to lean on for support throughout the process.

4-H & FFA Livestock Judging Contest at the Western National Roundup at the National Western Stock Show
Every day you make countless decisions that require the use of your evaluation skills. You decide what to eat, what to wear, what picture to post on Instagram, and the list goes on and on. The process you use to make these and other decisions is what judging can help you to develop. Clubs, districts and regions may host their own judging clinics, and each region has one or more competitions at which senior members can qualify for the Provincial Judging Competition.
Four judges from the Provincial Judging Competition will go onto this high caliber judging competition to compete against other young livestock judges from across the United States. These individuals get to judge a selection of livestock, attend workshops, dances/entertainment and the National Western Stock Show, what is known as the “Super Bowl” of livestock shows. Individual and team excellence is recognized at an award brunch and ceremony. This team travels with 4-H Alberta’s Hippology Team who will also be attending the Western National Roundup.

Provincial Judging Competition Become a better, more efficient decision maker by keenly observing, analyzing and comparing animals or items in a class. Test your memory, cultivate your communication skills and practice organizing your thoughts while giving oral reasons. Plus, vie for amazing opportunities to travel and compete with fellow 4-H members in the following national and international judging contests that’ll open your eyes to agricultures across this country and around the world. Livestock Evaluation Contest at the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) Four judges will go on to compete in a top quality judging competition with 4-H and Future Farmers of America members. Up to sixteen classes of livestock will be evaluated. While in Billings, you and the team will have the chance to visit local landmarks and take in livestock events at the NILE. This trip gives judges an international judging experience as well as the opportunity to meet other youth with a shared passion for judging from across North America. October 2016

National 4-H & Youth Judging Competition at the Canadian Western Agribition Eight judges will be given the opportunity to attend this competition that helps to develop the skills of young agriculture judges. Competitors also have the opportunity to attend one of the world’s largest international agricultural marketplaces, the Canadian Western Agribition as well as meet and hang out with over 70 other youth judges from across Canada. Grand Aggregate of the competitions receives a $2,500 scholarship plus the prestigious honour of being a judge at Agribition’s First Lady Classic Heifer Show. November 2016

4-H Alberta Communications Program Communicating with confidence is one of the most valuable and marketable skills gained through 4-H involvement. And that’s why every 4-H members does a Communications Activity each 4-H year. Members may progress through club, district and region competitions. And for top senior member speakers and presenters, the experience culminates at the prestigious Provincial Communications Competition.
Provincial Communications Competition When it comes to communication, speaking and listening go hand in hand. The format for the day allows the top presenters and speakers from each of the regions the opportunity to listen and to learn from their fellow senior 4-H members. Family and friends of competitors are welcome to attend this impressive competition. April 9

Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture (CYSA) This competition is held every November at the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair in Toronto. Contestants prepare and present a 5-7 minute speech on one of five agriculturerelated topics. Each year, 4-H Alberta sends the winner of the Public Speaking portion of the Provincial Communications Competition to Toronto and the CYSA competition. November 2016

We believe that youth are the key to their own success, and to the success of those around them. What Selections does is simply give senior members a few more tools for helping them to realize their full potential at post-secondary school or in the workforce upon graduation from high school. At this year’s Selections program, participants will do self-awareness and self-management skill assessments and will learn and practice strategies that will help them to take their future by storm. Members will go through a series of small and large group activities, discussions and challenges that’ll help them to manage stress, manage their time as well as identify who they truly are so that they may take full advantage of their strengths. Members also learn to think about themselves and how they’re conducting themselves in relation to those around them.
Each year at Selections, 4-H Alberta chooses 14 new individuals who will serve a two-year term as Ambassadors for the organization.
This short program offers all of this in a dynamic and fast-paced atmosphere, with plenty of time for making friends and having a great time – dancing included! 4-H Alberta Ambassadors, the Premier’s Award Recipient and various travel award recipients are also selected at this program based on their dedication and contributions to the program, along with their demonstrated leadership and communication capabilities.
The Premier’s Award is the highest honor that an 4-H Alberta member can receive. Each year, it is awarded to an individual who has shown dedication to the program, demonstrated exceptional communication and leadership skills, as well as a commitment to their own personal growth and development.

During their term, Ambassadors work to promote 4-H Alberta’s events, opportunities and the positive impact that 4-H has on youth and adult volunteer participants. They’ll do so by putting themselves out there both online and offline. Having experienced first-hand much of what 4-H Alberta has to offer, these senior members or recent alumni are the perfect spokespeople for 4-H Alberta.
Be Named the 2016 Premier’s Award Recipient
In addition to fulfilling their role as a 4-H Alberta Ambassador, the Premier’s Award Recipient will be asked to formally address various audiences and will also be invited to meet the current Premier of Alberta.
Brennan Munro
2015 Premier’s Award Recipient Brennan has been a member of the Irricana Beef & Multi 4-H Club in the Calgary Region for nine years, which comes as no surprise considering that 4-H membership has been a long-standing tradition of her family’s. During her time as a member, Brennan has truly experienced 4-H. She’s undertaken a variety of projects and executive positions at the club level and has participated in countless events and opportunities at the district, regional and provincial levels of the organization. She’s a member that has taken full advantage of the program, and is therefore extremely qualified to speak to others about all that 4-H has to offer. Brennan is also a recognizable member and advocate of 4-H Alberta’s sheep project. After her many years in the project, Brennan now has a flock of her very own. Some of Brennan’s 4-H highlights include her final 4-H on Parade, where she proudly led her lamb into the ring as it was announced as Grand Champion Market Lamb, counseling at some of her favorite 4-H camps as well as being named the Top Judge at the 2014 Provincial 4-H Alberta Judging Competition and the Premier’s Award Recipient at Selections in May of 2015. This fall, Brennan will begin at the University of Alberta in pursuit of an education that she hopes will lead to a career as a veterinarian. Watch for Brennan at various events in the coming months!
15 4-H Canada National Members Forum The 4-H Canada National Members Forum will be back in Toronto after being held in Regina in 2015. This forum is an amazing opportunity to gather in Canada’s largest city with other senior 4-H members from across Canada. Attend sessions, listen to speakers and learn from your fellow 4-Hers. See the sights and sounds of Toronto and discover what binds 4-Hers together and what makes makes 4-H unique in communities spanning from coast to coast. In 2016, the 4-H Canada Members Forum ‘s theme will fall under the Environment & Healthy Living Leadership Pillar. November 2-6, 2016

4-H Canada Citizenship Congress An always challenging, but inspiring opportunity, this 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress will be no different. Citizenship Congress will deepen your understanding of governance and public policy, nurture your communication skills, and expand your horizons as you discover Canada through other 4-H members’ eyes. Work shops will culminate with the annual debate, where you and other members will construct insightful arguments and practice your skills of persuasion and public speaking. Ultimately you’ll learn more about Canada, its government, and yourself. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore Ottawa and get up close and personal with the buildings on Parliament Hill. USA National 4-H Members Conference The Annual US National 4-H Conference is the premiere civic engagement opportunity for 4-H members across the USA and its territories, as well as for 4-H participants from the global movement. Members will not only learn while at the conference, they will have the opportunity to apply their newly developed and refined skills. As a delegate, you will choose an important societal topic and in round table groups prepare a formal briefing. During the conference, the groups present their briefing to federal officials around the Washington, D.C. area.
4-H California Leadership Conference Caution: You may get sand in your toes, breathe in some salty sea air, stand under towering palm trees and fall in love with California. You most certainly will fall in love with the 4-H California State Leadership Conference taking place at the Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. At this four day conference you’ll participate in an experiential education focused on leadership development, civic engagement and much, much more. There’s also the possibility to extend the trip with a host family stay. With this travel award opportunity, you’ll experience an amazing leadership conference and check out the sun-kissed beaches of the Pacific coast.
In addition to the conference activities, 4-H Canada delegates also have a chance to tour Washington, and visit some of the nation’s famous cultural and political sites, including the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Hill.

16 Club to Club Exchanges There’s a whole new part of Canada waiting for you to explore! Groups of 10 youth and 1-2 chaperones, participate in a reciprocal exchange with a 4-H group from another part of the country, giving them a chance to explore one of the biggest, greatest, and most diverse nations in the world. The Club to Club Exchange challenges participating groups to become community ambassadors, as they host their twins and put their hometowns on display. July August

Going Global Service Learning 4-H Canada has partnered with 4-H Ghana on a new community service leadership program. Traveling in a team of ten, 4-H members from across Canada, members will travel to Ghana and work on a variety of community projects with 4-H Ghana youth. 4-H team members will have the opportunity to experience a different culture and reality of life, while exploring agriculture and 4-H abroad. They will be challenged to consider their work and its impact and develop an increased understanding of community and global responsibilities. July 4-24

Going Global Exchanges The 4-H Going Global Exchange program is an exciting initiative that seeks to engage 4-H youth in an intercultural experience and to increase awareness of sustainable agriculture and food security issues globally. By participating in this program, you can: • Experience a new country. • Expand your global perspective. • Learn about sustainable agriculture practices. • Explore issues related to food security. This reciprocal international exchange is a unique opportunity that allows 4-H youth to represent 4-H in their country. Traveling members will host incoming delegates. 2015 partner countries included the United Kingdom, Finland, Jamaica, Taiwan, and Japan. 2016 partner countries will be officially confirmed in the fall of 2015. 4-H Alberta Japanese Exchanges These exchanges have a slightly different focus, but each is similar in that it is meant to help promote cultural understanding and to help members gain a world-view. No matter what exchange they choose, lifelong friendships and a new perspective are sure to be the result. Please note that participating in both of these exchanges is also an option. Language Exchange This is a three week language immersion experience in Japan, where members will stay with a host family in Tokyo, attend classes and practice what they’ve learned in an everyday setting!
