WONDERS OF CANADA By Wilma Halvorson, Leader of Stansleigh 4-H Club The Stainsleigh 4-H Club of Provost, Alberta was involved in a Club to Club Exchange with Clifton 4-H Club of the Old Barns area of Truro, Nova Scotia. Ten 4-H members and two leaders came to Provost on July 7 to meet their twins for the next 10 days. Stainsleigh 4-H members then flew to Halifax on July 25 and traveled an hour north to Truro along the Salmon River off the Cobequid Bay, which is part of the Bay of Fundy. They even got to go river rafting on the Shubenacadie River on the coming in of the tide. What an experience for the members. Then they went mud sliding into the river – boy did they have fun! The area has lots of dairy farms so we toured different ones. Clifton also had their Achievement Day while we were there, and we got to see the different ways the two provinces handle their 4-H programs. Before we knew, it was time to return to Alberta. Thank you Club to Club Exchange Canada for providing us with this great opportunity to experience another part of Canada! Friendships for life were made.

FOR THE LOVE OF SCIENCE Jayme Granberg competed in the 4-H Canada Science Fair in 2017 and advanced all the way to the CanadaWide Science Fair, held in Regina, Saskatchewan. A member of the Strathcona 4-H Rein Riders, Jamie researched and presented her project entitled, ‘Which Plants Grow Best in Which Manure.’ “I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a 4-Her and we’re just taught to public speak, but personally, I wasn’t really that nervous.

Walking into the exhibit hall where there was 500 other projects was very breathtaking – the realization hit me of how many people were there. I would say if you’re planning on doing a project, do something that interests you. If I had done a project on physics, or something that I’m just not interested in, all the work that I had put into the project wouldn’t have been as good. I would also say, get a mentor – my dad helped me out a lot.”

13 Become a Key Member Becoming a Key Member is the first step of many for senior members who want to go above and beyond the call of duty. David MacTaggart – West Central Region Ambassador I wanted the other members of my club to experience how much fun provincial activities could be and coming Senior Members’ Conference was the perfect opportunity for that! After I left the 4-H Center on Sunday, we all had a blast spinning on the dance floor and learning handy skills for life on our own. Alyssa Henderson – 2017 Premier’s Award Recipient Selections is an amazing program which I would recommend for all senior members. I had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet many new ones, and also participate in a variety of fun activities. These enabled me to further develop and use leadership and teamwork skills when working in group activities. Being surrounded by others who had such strong skills, I found myself being constantly challenged to improve these skills, which I personally

gained so much from and intend to fully utilize as I move forward in life. I was also fortunate enough to become an Ambassador, which I am excited for as I will be able to continue my involvement in 4-H for the next couple years. Although somewhat challenging, Selections has taught me lots about the future, provided me with some amazing opportunities and enabled me to have a great time with friends at one last 4-H camp!

15 Selections Every 4-H members has the potential to do great things and through the 4-H program, we help them try and reach that potential. The Selections program is one of those ways in which we provide members with the keys to ensure their own success and the success of those around them. Since 1957, Selections has been one of the premier learning and networking opportunities for Alberta 4-H members with various informative sessions and speakers. In 2018, the program will be focused on preparing for the future with sessions geared towards moving out, budgeting money and choosing a career path. At the end of the short program, the newest Alberta Ambassadors and the Premier’s Award winner will be selected and a number of travel opportunities will be awarded. The trip winner, Alberta ambassadors and Premier’s Award recipient all play a very large role in the success of the 4-H program through engaging with other members, getting involved in their communities and demonstrating the benefits of 4-H. Be named the 2017 Premier’s Award Recipient Since the first Premier’s Award was presented in 1964, one senior 4-H member is honoured with this prestigious recognition each year. This is the highest honour that an Alberta 4-H member can receive, recognizing exceptional communication and leadership skills, as well as a strong dedication to their own personal growth and the growth of the 4-H program. The Premier’s Award recipient represents 4-H on a provincial level, attending and speaking at various events, engaging with 4-Hers and even meeting with the Premier of Alberta.

Become an Ambassador Each year at the Selections program, 14 new members join the ranks of the 4-H Alberta Ambassadors. Two senior members from each region are selected for a two year term where they will promote 4-H Alberta through programs, speaking at events and public engagement. To be selected as an Ambassador, members are judged on their diary points, their engagement in a group setting and their knowledge of agriculture, current events and the 4-H program itself. Having experienced first-hand much of what 4-H Alberta has to offer, these senior members or recent alumni are the perfect spokespeople for 4-H Alberta.

USA National 4-H Members Conference One Alberta 4-H delegate will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. for the premier civic engagement opportunity for 4-H members around the world. Not only will they learn and refine important skills, they will have the chance to practice them in a real world setting. In small groups, attendees will put together a presentation based on an important societal topic. These briefings will then be presented to U.S. federal officials. It isn’t all work however as delegates will also tour Washington, seeing important political sites including the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Hill. March or April 2018

Washington, D.C.

4-H Canada Citizenship Congress The 47th annual 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress will once again prove a challenging but inspiring opportunity for delegates across the country. Participants will get to experience government procedure up close and personal while simultaneously developing communication skills and expanding their horizons. Throughout the week, members will engage in workshops and sessions that will culminate in the annual debate. Attendees will learn the skills necessary to construct insightful arguments, be persuasive and effectively convey their thoughts. Throughout the trip, members will also have the opportunity to explore Ottawa, Parliament Hill and learn more about Canada. April or May 2019

Ottawa, Ontario

4-H California Leadership Conference Be sure to pack your sandals, a bathing suit and lots of sunscreen for the 2017 4-H California State Leadership Conference. Soak in the sun, meet new people and experience 4-H at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. You will participate in many activities focused on leadership development, civic engagement and so much more. Along with the four day conference, there is also the possibility of extending the trip with a host family stay. July 2018 Humboldt State University, Arcata, California

Northwest Territories Agriculture Development Tour Join 21 other 4-Hers on the road trip of a life time through northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories. If you like the outdoors and agriculture, this is the trip for you as 4-Hers will have the chance to see beautiful landscapes, stop at various agriculture centres and camp along the way. By the end of the trip, you will also have learned a lot about yourself and made incredible friendships with your travel companions. Summer 2018

Alberta, Northwest Territories

Happy 100th

4-H ALBERTA

It starts with a child. Add faith, opportunity and guidance. Challenge them. Above all, believe in them. Let them rise to the task, and they become strong. And strong kids grow to be leaders. Leaders who build communities. UFA is proud to support the next generation of leaders. Growing strong communities, one child at a time.
