The eyes of Tigray / Los ojos del Tigray After returning from our first trip to St. Louise Eye Clinic in Mekele we knew for sure that we wanted to work on a portrait theme there. The second time, we travelled with our studio flashes in our suitcase so we could take their photograph with a constant lighting. The patients’ waiting rooms and the rooms where the patients rest after their operations in the hospital could be used as an improvised photographic study by removing the beds and keeping them empty of people for a few hours a day. People from all over the province of Tigray entered the precinct of the Daughters of Charity convent where the clinic is located. Looking at their faces, their clothes, their wives’ tattoos, their jewels and the scarifications around their eyes we continue trying to understand their customs, culture and religions. Although they had never had a portrait taken before they stared at us straight into the camera. The main figure of this choice of photographs is the look which comes back to us from these strong, determined people. Looks which tell stories and convey emotions. Their eyes tell us about the illnesses which many of them have suffered : glaucoma, cataracts, trachoma. They tell also of their knocks against oxen’s horns, the infections caused by flies and by the lack of water. The series of portraits we took show the patients, their families, their guides and the sick people who sat for us during those days we spent in the hospital.

Tras regresar de nuestro primer viaje de la St. Louise Eye Clinic en Mekele, capital del Tigray, norte de Etiopía, supimos con certeza que queríamos trabajar allí el tema del retrato. Viajamos esta segunda vez con los flashes de estudio en la maleta para poder retratar con una luz constante. Las salas de descanso y postoperatorio del hospital vacías de camas y gente durante algunas horas al día podían servirnos de estudio fotográfico improvisado. Gentes de toda la provincia del Tigray entraban en el recinto del convento “Daughters of Charity” en el que se hallaba ubicada la clínica. A través de sus caras, de sus ropas, de los tatuajes de sus mujeres, joyas y escarificaciones alrededor de los ojos uno sigue intentando entender sus costumbres, cultura y religiones. Nunca antes habían sido retratados y pese a ello nos miraban directos a cámara. La protagonista de esta selección fotográfica es la mirada que nos devuelven estas personas de gran entereza. Miradas que cuentan historias y transmiten sensaciones. Sus ojos nos muestran las enfermedades que muchos de ellos han contraído. Glaucoma, Cataratas, Tracoma, golpes con las astas de un buey, infecciones provocadas por la falta de agua y las moscas. La serie de retratos que allí hicimos muestra a los pacientes, familiares, lazarillos y enfermos que posaron para nosotros durante los días que estuvimos en el hospital.

Georges Bataille and later Roland Barthes, said that photography was a lie, the Great Lie. They were both referring to the impossibility of capturing reality in space-time terms, yet their idea made me think about the use of this medium for creating, for telling stories. So I have based my work on showing “my reality”, using the lie, the unreal- as the starting point. And this is where theatre comes into play. Theatre is the art which is the point where the vertices of the real and unreal, of visual and audio, of laughter and tears all come together. In theatre, there is a sense of complicity between the actor and the public. There is a certain security between the stage and the audience that all of what is about to be said is a lie, a Great Lie.. Howewer, if a symbiosis between the audience and the enacted scene is produced, the Great Lie becomes the Great Truth. That is the magic I try to reflect in my pictures.

Georges Bataille y posteriormente Roland Barthes afirmaron que la fotografía era una mentira, la Gran Mentira. Aunque ambos se refiriesen a la imposibilidad de captar la realidad en términos de espacio-tiempo, esta afirmación me ha hecho reflexionar en cómo utilizar este medio para crear, para narrar historias. Así pues he basado mi trabajo en mostrar “mi realidad” partiendo de la mentira, de lo no real. Y es en ese punto donde entra en escena el Teatro. El teatro es un arte en el que se cruzan los vértices de lo real y de lo irreal, de lo visual y de lo sonoro, de la sonrisa y del llanto. En el teatro se crea una complicidad entre actores y público: existe la seguridad entre el escenario y la grada de que todo lo que se va a decir es mentira, es una Gran Mentira; sin embargo si se produce la simbiósis entre grada y escena, la Gran Mentira se transforma en la Gran Verdad. Es esa la magia que intento reflejar en mis imágenes.
