Saskatchewan ROCKS

4-H’ers from across the province showed why Saskatchewan Rocks during the 2019 4-H Canada Leadership Summit. The summit was held in Saskatoon for the first time January 30 to February 1, with more than 100 delegates from across Canada attending. There were two special events, the Leadership awards on Thursday evening, held at the Remai Modern, and the Provincial Showcase, hosted by 4-H Saskatchewan, on Friday evening. The 4-H Saskatchewan Provincial Showcase, dubbed Saskatchewan Rocks, was held in Dalmeny. The event was a time to showcase the amazing members and leaders in various clubs around Saskatchewan and some of the unique projects their club offers. Some of the clubs who had diplays were Wishart Multiple 4-H Club, Longlaketon Multiple 4-H Club, Big River Multiple 4-H Club, Spruce Home Multiple 4-H Club, Viscount Beef 4-H Club, Vanscoy Multiple 4-H Club and Sunset Rangers 4-H Club. The delegates arrived around 5:30 p.m. at the Dalmeny

Curling Rink, where they had the opportunity to look at some of the club displays around the hall before the program. Then Emily Letendre and Brett Rumpel welcomed everyone to the event before talking a little bit about what makes 4-H Saskatchewan unique. The delegates then enjoyed a delicious beef on a bun meal, complete with Saskatoon berry pie for dessert. After supper, the delegates had the opportunity to try their hands at curling, check out the walk through history display and buy 4-H Saskatchewan items from the store. The buses arrived around 9 p.m. to take them back to their hotel, so they could get some sleep before catching their early flights Saturday morning. This event would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Thank you to Saskatchewan Egg Producers, Sask Milk and the Ministry of Agriculture. A huge thanks also goes out to all our hard working 4-H’ers, who volunteered throughout the evening, helped plan the event and showed the delegates how Saskatchewan Rocks!

4-H Saskatchewan Events & Opportunities New Club Booklet

If your 4-H Club is brand new this year – or is a Returning Club that would like a fresh take on starting out your 4-H year, get a copy of the New Club Booklet.

This booklet reviews the basics of running a 4-H Club, including: Club Requirements, Booking Meetings, Volunteer Screening, Information & Registration Nights, Agendas, Preparing for your Next General Meeting, and Staying in the Know. It also answers those little annoying questions like: Who can vote at the beginning of the 4-H year?; What do you need to figure out signing authority?; and, What do you need to do after your registration night? Talk to your regional 4-H specialist for a copy of the New Club Booklet!

Journey 2050 and Farmer 2050 The year 2050 is a key moment in time - the world’s population is projected to be 2 billion more than today. Food production needs are expected to rise by at least 60 per cent resulting in increased pressure on agricultural land, habitats and communities. Nutrien has created two apps, available on Google Play and iTunes, to help teach youth about these challenges.

Farmer 2050 Nutrien worked with community partners around the world to launch Farmers 2050 – a new version of the Journey 2050 farm simulation game that allows for ongoing game playing at home – and it’s available for download to your mobile device right now. Farmers 2050’s interactions include more commodities, exposure to careers, unique learning moments, videos of real farm practices and much more. There are educational messages incorporated to ensure players understand the importance of feeding the world while balancing economic, social and environmental factors.

Journey 2050 Journey 2050 takes students on a virtual farm simulation that explores world food sustainability. Using an inquiry based approach the program encourages students to make decisions and adjust them as they see their impact on society, the environment and the economy at a local and global scale. The students experience the lives of three farm families in Kenya, India, and Canada and learn the role of best management practices in feeding the world, reducing environmental impacts and in improving social performance through greater access to education, medical care and community infrastructure. Both apps are available on iTunes and Google Play or through their website.

AGM IS COMING!

Are you ready for this year’s Annual General Meeting? The registration deadline has now passed, but districts have until February 15 to submit name changes to the 4-H office. All delegates will receive an AGM prepackage in the mail before AGM. This prepackage will have important information for all delegate to know. Once you receive your package, please make sure to read it and bring it with you to AGM. As a District Delegate, there is important information you should be aware of as a voting representative. The Board of Directors nominees and the proposed resolutions will be posted on the 4-H website during the month of February. Once they are available, make sure to consult your district to see how they would like you to vote. Remember, you are representing your district’s opinion at AGM! The 4-H Saskatchewan AGM is not only just a business meeting – it is also a place for members and leaders to gather together to make friends, share ideas and socialize. Although the 4-H staff and Board of Directors want everyone to enjoy their time at AGM, they also want to provide a safe environment for all participants. In addition to the business meeting, there will also be some fun activities throughout the weekend for the delegates. On Saturday night, members will enjoy an awesome 4-H dance, while leaders will try their luck at BINGO and enjoy socializing with each other. On Sunday morning, there will be new topics to spark conversation at the Focus on 4-H Forum! This year’s topics will cover Alternative Selections Methods, Building Brand Awareness and Communication of Programs. This year, 4-H Saskatchewan was also the recipient of a SSCF grant to host one of 50 Vital Community Conversations as a part of its 50th anniversary. More information will be available in the prepackage. We are excited to see you all there! Resolutions and Nominee bios will be available on the website. CANADA’S AGRICULTURE DAY | February 12, 2019

Post a pic of your favourite Canadian food Tag it with #CdnAgDay

Let’s celebrate the food we love AgDay.ca

Canada’s Agriculture Day is back. Last year, the entire ag industry gathered at hundreds of events across the country, shared our pride, opened doors to new food conversations, and trended nationally on Twitter. And this year it’s even bigger. Join us on February 12 as we celebrate the food we love. With more events, more conversations and more connections in 2019, you can make the celebration better than ever. Connecting with consumers Canada’s Agriculture Day is a time to showcase all the amazing things happening in the industry and help consumers see the connection to where their food comes from and the people who produce it. Consumers want to learn more, and this day is a great way to start the conversation in person and on social media. Here are a few ways you can get involved: • Post a photo, make a video, or write a blog. Share what you’re doing on social media – and use hashtag #CdnAgDay. • Host a potluck and encourage your friends to use all-Canadian ingredients. • Teach someone something new about agriculture. Share your knowledge and story with others. Visit AgDay.ca for more ideas to celebrate Canada’s Agriculture Day. Be sure to visit the Events page for a list of activities happening in communities across Canada – many ag industry associations, businesses and Agriculture More Than Ever partners are hosting their own Canada’s Agriculture Day events that are open to the public. It’s all about celebrating Canadian agriculture and food in engaging, fun and respectful ways. 4-H Saskatchewan is proud to support Canada’s Agriculture Day. If you’re fortunate to be part of this amazing industry too, we hope you’ll get involved and celebrate the day in your own way. 16
