Christmas Break

Leaderama

4-H Saskatchewan Provincial Office wishes you a very happy New Year. We hope you had a fantastic holiday season filled with loved ones, too much food , fun and relaxation.

4-H Saskatchewan hosted the third annual Leaderama, a Leadership Conference for leaders, on December 5 - 6 at the Ramada Hotel in Regina. Thank you to event sponsors Farm Credit Canada, SaskTel and Blair’s Family of Companies for making this event possible.

We are back in the office January 4 and 4-H Saskatchewan’s 2016 is shaping up to be more exciting than ever!

Giving Back On December 11, part of the Provincial 4-H Office staff volunteered at Midtown Mall in Saskatoon wrapping gifts by donation with all proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House. The seven person crew spent three hours perfecting their gift wrapping abilities and had lots of fun doing it. It wasn’t all hard work, they also spent some quality time with Santa (pictured above). Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada helps give sick children what they need most – their families. It is a home away from home for the families of seriously ill children who are staying at a nearby hospital. Their Houses offer families so much more than just a roof over their heads. They have qualified staff and dedicated volunteers who are committed to taking care of the day-to-day essentials of running a home, so families don’t have to worry about them. They have programs that offer everything from education to meditation. And they are filled with many different families who all share a common bond – love for their sick child.

Big thank also you goes out to the hard-working Committee Members: Susan Avramenko, Paula Beattie, Glenn Gress and Darren Fisk. The weekend was made possible with your efforts. Twenty-six 4-H Leaders from 15 4-H clubs spent the weekend learning, networking and having fun!

Social Media Push Huge thank you goes out to our followers and likers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We have been trying to increase our page likes and followers, particularly with youth. In just one day in December we received 170 new likes simply by current 4-H’ers and their families sharing our posts. Keep up the good work and let’s keep 4-H Saskatchewan top of mind. Let’s give 4-H Canada something to talk about in the prairies!

Fundraising with Stars

4-H Saskatchewan has partnered with STARS Air Ambulance to offer an exciting new fundraising opportunity for 4-H clubs: selling STARS Calendars. This is a popular annual fundraiser for 4-H clubs in Alberta and for the first time, we are offering it in Saskatchewan. So, how does it work? Clubs that choose to participate will receive STARS Calendars which they can sell. Each STARS Calendar can be sold for $30, with clubs keeping at least $6 per calendar sold. Depending on the number of total calendars sold by all participating clubs in Saskatchewan by the end of the campaign, this amount could be as much as $9 per calendar. Visit the website for more details.

AGM 2016- Resolution and Name Changes The Ramada in Saskatoon will be host to 4-H Saskatchewan’s 2016 AGM. This is an important business meeting for our organization but also an opportunity for fun and learning. Each district is responsible to send one leader and one member delegate to AGM. The deadline to change delegate names is February 15, 2016. The deadline for resolutions is January 31, 2016. To submit a resolution to be discussed at AGM, your district must send in the District Meeting Minutes which addressed the resolution.

New 4-H Challenge! Get involved as an individual, or as an entire club, by creating and doing your own AGtivity. Maybe you’ll host a harvest supper in your community, plan a farm safety workshop or build a community garden – it’s up to your interpretation and creativity – the sky is the limit, so long as it is agriculture related. It’s that simple, spread the word about agriculture. What you do is up to you! This year’s theme is Ag Awareness and Education. The 4-H Staff will be sharing our AGtivities in the Bits & Pieces and online to give you some inspiration. We know that you’re creative and we can’t wait to see what you come up with.

AGtivities

Share your story with all of 4-H Saskatchewan by sending in a write-up and photos to your Regional 4-H Specialist. You can submit as many activities as you would like! You can share online too – use #AGtivities on Facebook and Twitter to connect with others. All AGtivities will be featured in the Bits & Pieces, and be eligible for the People’s Choice Award to be chosen at AGM in March. All activities must be submitted by March 15, 2016 to be eligible for the People’s Choice Award.

Mr. Jones grew up in Brandon, Manitoba, where in 1913 he co-founded what would grow into the 4-H movement across Canada. This news was announced at the 4-H Canada Annual General Meeting in June, where 4-H Canada also named him as an honourary lifetime member. Mr. Jones’ grandson, also named E. Ward Jones, had this to say on behalf of the family: “Since its inception, 4-H has played a significant and positive role in Canadian society and made an invaluable contribution to the development of agriculture in this country. And if he were here now, my grandfather would no doubt be proud and pleased to know that 4-H is still as important and relevant today as it was 100 years ago.”
