Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The biggest show of ewes and lambs this season, with a busy ring side of buyers ensuring a flying trade from start to finish. Aged Texel ewes with twin Beltex lambs from H Swale, St Michaels sold to £292 with a pen of Texel ewes with twin Texel lambs from J&S Winstanley, Clifton selling to £288. A Beltex ewe with a super single Beltex lamb from H Swale, St Michaels sold to £275, Mule ewes with Texel single lambs from the same good home sold to £265. A pen of broken mouthed Mule ewes with Texel lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold to £266.

Another pleasing entry of 323 saw a market average of £107. Pure bred ewes sold to £262 for Texels from R Wilson, Appleby with other medium pure ewes regularly £190 to £230. Heavy first cross ewes sold to £180 for Texels from R&E Ladds, Kendal with others generally £150 to £175, mediums £130 to £148 and smaller meated sorts £110 to £122. Cheviot Mules sold to £150 from M Robinson, Stainton with North Country Mule to £140 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Heavy weight well fleshed Mules were regularly £130 to £142, mediums £120 to £130 and the smaller meated sorts £98 to £115. Pure hill ewes sold to £144 for Cheviots from M&C Booth, Kentmere, Swaledales to £110 from J&J Huck, Burneside, Rough Fells £106 from W Atkinson & Son, Crook. Stronger end hill ewes were generally £85 to £100, with mediums £75 to £82 and smaller leaner end £40 to £52, depending on quality and type.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of 118 calves sold to a top of £580 for a cracking British Blue heifer from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck with others from this home at £535. Younger more rearing type heifer calves sold to £340 for a blue from DW & E Cottam, £300 for a Charolais from Bambers farm and very sweet fortnight old blue heifers selling to £270 from Dolphenby Farming LTD, Penrith.

Bull calves sold to £420 for a well grown 8 week old Charolais from Bambers Farm, with Angus from this good home at £415. A lot of younger calves were forward today with 5 week old blues to £340 from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor and 20 day old blues to £295 from Dolphenby Farming LTD.

A slightly smaller entry of 38 weaned calves and stirks saw blue steers sell to £1280 from S Whitehead, Middelton with young Limousin bulls from this home at £1200, all strongest end weaned bulls broke the £1000 barrier. A run of freshly weaned angus steers from Messrs Young, Lindale sold for £695. Only a handful of heifer stirks were forward with these selling to £760 for a Simental and £750 for a Limousin both from Bambers Farm.

The fortnightly sale of 200 store cattle was put before a busy ring side of local and travelled buyers, with some leaving empty handed many more could have been sold to vendors advantages. Angus bullocks sold to £1870 from BJ Bowness, Kendal who sold British Blue bullocks to £1760 with many of the strongest bullocks selling to £1600 plus with first cross dairy blue bullocks selling to £1670 from RJ&D Holden, Broughton. Yearling grazing bullocks were in high demand with sweet sorts selling to £1260 from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook with many regularly £1100-£1200. Heifers saw a pair of Limousin sell to £1600 from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. With others selling to £1580 from T&D Wright, Wray. Native heifers attracted plenty of interest with angus selling to £1550 from BJ Bowness, Kendal and Herefords selling to £1540 from M Howarth, Grange over Sands. Yearling suckler bred heifers saw the best sell to £1120 from CI Briggs, Ambleside with these regularly selling from £1050 to £1100, smaller grazing sorts £850-£900.

OTM Cattle

All cull cows sold to a lift in trade with an overall average of 170p/kg, OTM heifers to 211p/kg, steers to 195p/kg and cull bulls 220p/kg.

Beef cows sold to 221p/kg for a Blonde from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with other heavier well bred beef cows 190p/kg to 210 p/kg. A keen interest in those for feeding, with these types generally 170p/kg to 190p/kg. Top grossing being a Blonde from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill achieving £1603. Very few dairy cows forward today but those that were sold to 224.5p/kg for a young heavy weight Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farm, Witherslack with other better end dairy cows generally 170p/kg to 185p/kg, with parlour type cows generally 150p/kg to 170p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from WH Kitching & Son, Sedgwick at £1590.

OTM heifers sold to 231.5p/kg from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby with others at £1690 from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Bulls sold to 279.5p/kg and £2083 for a young Blonde from T Atkinson, Ulverston. Other younger stock bulls to 227p/kg and £1895, with mature stock bulls to 199.5p/kg and £1663.

NWA Lancaster saw another fast and competitive trade for all classes of stock at its popularly weekly sale. Stores cattle sold to a top price of £1860, OTM’s to 269.5p/kg and £1781, new calved dairy to £2000, weaned calves to £680 and rearing calves to £465.

Dairy Cattle

A single new calves heifer sold to £2000.

Calves and Weanlings

78 rearing and weaned calves saw a weaned Aberdeen Angus bull sell to £580 with weaned British Blues £545, Limousin cross £525 and others regularly £480 to £520. Stronger rearing calves sold to £465 for a British Blue cross with other strong native and continental bulls £360 to £420. The best young rearers were regularly £280 to £340, with younger bulls £220 to £280. Dairy bulls sold to £130 with other medium rearers generally £70 to £100.

Weaned heifers sold to £680 for a British Blue cross, with others at £660. Other pens were regularly £520 to £570. Stronger rearing heifers sold to £435 for a British Blue cross, with other native and continental heifers £300 to £350. Best young rearers sold to £290 for a Charolais cross, with others £250 to £285 and the younger end £160 to £210.

Store steers sold to an overall market average of £1410, peaking at £1860 for an Aberdeen Angus cross. British Blue cross sold to £1790, Limousin cross to £1760, Charolais cross £1710 and Hereford cross £1700. Stronger end steers were regularly £1550 to £1700. Buyers were looking for cattle ahead of turnout, with these type steers regularly £1280 to £1450. Dairy bred steers sold to £1450 for British Friesians.

All heifers forward averaged £1360, peaking at £1660 for a British Blue cross with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1600, Hereford cross £1550. Other stronger heifers were regularly £1350 to £1480, with heifers suitable for turnout £1120 to £1300.

OTM Cattle

Cull cows achieved an overall market averaged of 169p/kg, beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg and £1503 for a Limousin cross. Other well bred beef cows were regularly 205p/kg to 220p/kg and £1300 to £1450, medium beef cows were finding a keen buyer interest for further finishing. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 199.5p/kg and £1605, with others regularly 178p/kg to 190p/kg and £1200 to £1400. Parlour type cows were generally 150p/kg to 165p/kg, depending on quality and type, with leaner light weights 120p/kg to 140p/kg.

OTM heifer averaged 225p/kg with beef heifer to 269.5p/kg and £1735. Diary bred heifers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1760.

OTM steers averaged 232p/kg for an entry of entirely black and whites, peaking at 239.5p/kg and £1520.

Mature stock bulls sold to 209p/kg and £1791.
