This leading touring route annually attracts more than 80 per cent of all international visitors to regional NSW and 45 per cent of international visitor nights. International air access is through Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. There are regular domestic jet air services into regional airports along the route at Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Ballina-Byron Bay. Main road access to The Legendary Pacific Coast is along the Pacific Highway with a network of enticing regional drives and quaint country roads leading to major regional centres, country towns and villages. The Legendary Pacific Coast is an opportunity to discover the real essence of Australia. • Take breaks regularly • Respect the speed limit and; • Avoid driving fatigued and look for early warning signs - yawning, poor concentration, sore eyes or drowsiness.

Signage Stop, Revive and Survive at one of the more than 1,400 rest areas and Driver Reviver sites across the state. Driver Reviver sites offer a chance to take a safe break and stretch your legs safely.

Seatbelts Remember to ensure everyone travelling in the car is wearing a seatbelt at all times. One in five drivers are still killed in country areas when not wearing a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt nearly doubles your chance of surviving a serious crash and reduces the risk of serious injury. Children under seven years of age are required to be secured in a correctly fitted and approved child restraint or booster seat.

New South Wales has strict drink driving and drug laws and NSW Police actively conduct roadside alcohol and drug tests. Drivers holding a full license must stay below the 0.05 blood alcohol limit, while learner and provisional drivers must not have any alcohol in their system. It is illegal to drive while impaired by drugs or drive with the presence of illicit drugs in your system.

Getting around You can start your legendary journey in Sydney or Brisbane, sticking to the Pacific Coast corridor or diverting off the highway to discover the legendary towns and unforgettable experiences spread across the numerous destinations.

If you are unsure if your prescriptive drugs will affect your driving, check the label on the packet or consult your GP. Remember it is also illegal to use a handheld mobile/cellphone while driving. This includes texting, calling or taking photographs on a scenic drive. Learner and provisional P1 drivers or riders and are not allowed to use mobile /cell phones, even in hands free mode, whilst driving or riding. Information provided by Transport for NSW.

By road Take extra care when towing a trailer, caravan or other vehicle and always ensure your vehicle is roadworthy for the trip. Self drive, hire a car or camper or take a coach. Sydney has numerous tunnels and tollways operating in parts of the city. Many of these operate on electronic tags or a pass (check with rta.nsw.gov. au for more details). Once across the Sydney Harbour Bridge look for signs directing to the Pacific Highway. If travelling south from Brisbane, note they also have a network of tollways (for more information, visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au).

The Australian Reptile & Wildlife Park is an award winning sanctuary set on 22 acres of beautiful Australian bush. Day 3 Newcastle to Port Stephens (55mins /65km)

Port Stephens is legendary for its nature and abundance of aquatic marine life and land activities. After a day filled with adventure, enjoy a Whale Ale or another local brew and dine on local farmgate producers, freshly caught seafood, oyster farms, macadamias, olives and figs. • Take a morning hike to the summit of Mount Tomaree and see some of the most spectacular views on the east coast of Australia. From May to November keep your eyes out for the majestic humpback whales as they make their way past the Port Stephens coastline. • Organize a day’s snorkeling at the incredible Worimi Conservation Lands or a snorkel with the 160 resident dolphins who live in a pristine marine park that is over 2 ½ times the size of Sydney Harbour. Day 6 Byron Bay to Tweed Coolangatta (50mins/65kms)

The Tweed region offers dramatic mountain ranges, World Heritage rainforests, uncrowded first class surf beaches, abundant produce from rich fertile volcanic soils, nature and an array of local galleries, artists and artisans. • Hike and follow hundreds of kilometres of bushwalking trails in ancient Indigenous landscapes in any of the 5 National Parks and the many Reserves which collectively form the world Heritage –listed Gondwana Rainforest of Australia. • Drive out through the Currumbin Valley just 15 mins from the coast to yet another forest world. Day 7 - depart for home or onward destinations from Gold Coast or Brisbane Airport (1hour from Coolangatta)

Day 1 The morning Discover the Tweed Coast, only 15 minutes from the Gold Coast International Airport. Spend the morning snorkelling with turtles at Cook Island, only 600m from the shore at Fingal Head. The island is a permanent home for green and loggerhead turtles, leopard sharks, spotted eagle rays and wobbygongs.

For lunch After working up an appetite, head to the seaside village of Cabarita Beach (15km from Fingal) for traditional Fish ‘n’ Chips. After lunch take a 400m stroll up Norries Headland - the jewel of the village. Relax on the bench seating to soak up the sunshine, scan the ocean for whales and watch some surfing.

In the afternoon explore the village of Kingscliff (10km from Cabarita Beach). Dotted between sidewalk cafés and restaurants are boutique stores and gift shops. After a spot of shopping spend the afternoon at Cudgen Creek where you can hire an array of watercraft to explore the crystal clear waterways or hire a fishing rod and try your luck at reeling in a big one.

Your first stop this morning is Tropical Fruit World, an eco-tourist destination (8km from Salt Village) where fruit growing is blended with a native reserve of rainforest trails, landscaped waterways and native animals. The farm grows over 500 different varieties of tropical and rare fruits.

For dinner Get ready for a divine dinner at Salt Village (2km from Kingscliff). Choose from the multi award winning Fins Seafood Restaurant, Bellini Italian, Mahsuri Thai, Sea Salt Ristorante or head to Season Restaurant for gourmet Australian Cuisine.

The evening After dinner enjoy a delicious house-made gelato from Piccollo as you stroll along the boulevard to the Saltbar Beachbar and Bistro located on the absolute beachfront at Salt Village. Enjoy a nightcap at the Saltbar and unwind after a busy day.

Stay the night Choose from 4-5 star accommodation by the seaside at Salt Village. Mantra on Salt Beach, Peppers Salt Resort & Spa or Peppers Balé Salt all offer beautifully appointed rooms and most boast hinterland or ocean views.

For lunch Head into the heart of the Tweed Valley, Murwillumbah (17km from Tropical Fruit World) and visit the Tweed Regional Gallery. The Gallery is home to the Margaret Olley Art Centre and is a destination experience showcasing stunning artwork. Enjoy lunch at the Gallery Café which offers an array of fine food, coffee and delicious cakes as well as boasting spectacular views of the Tweed’s dramatic landscape.

The afternoon Spend the afternoon in the riverside village of Tumbulgum (10km from Murwillumbah). Tumbulgum was one of the first villages established in northern NSW around 1840. It is here you enjoy an ale with the locals at the historic Tumbulgum Tavern as you watch a spectacular golden sunset over the Tweed River before making your way back to your hotel on the Tweed Coast (13km) or head to the Gold Coast International Airport (20km).
