You Deserve A Country

“You must be the happiest young woman in the world.”

That’s what Marie-Ange, the agent at the Refugee Assistance Bureau, says to Layla as she hands her the acceptance of her naturalization application.

But what can “being the happiest young woman in the world” mean when you have left all of your loved ones behind, you live at the Dorothy – a filthy, rodent-infested hotel run by an unscrupulous slumlord, and your job is scrubbing toilets at Mrs. Meng’s café until they shine?

When sweet Momo, her friend and compass, has to shut down his wonderful merry-go-round because Paris’s Town Hall thinks he’s “too bearded,” and your flatmate, Sadia – beautiful, rebellious Sadia – humiliates herself regularly for a fistful of euros?

Vibrant with both anger and humanity, You Deserve A Country describes an exiled woman’s obstacle course in France, where she’s never quite “French enough.”

It is also the story of an emancipation, held aloft by a singularly powerful writing style, at once scathing and poetical.

Leïla Bouherrafa

Leïla Bouherrafa won the 2019 Young Novelists Prize for La Dédicace at the Touquet ParisPlage Book Fair. You Deserve A Country is her second novel.

ALSO AVAILABLE

The Dedication

Her debut novel is about to be sent to the printers, but this author still can’t decide who to dedicate it to. This is the story of a woman who is searching for something: a dedication. It is “terribly important” her editor tells her with a smile. A dedication, “those few insignificant words on the first page. Nobody ever knows who it’s for, and nobody ever reads it.” But who could she dedicate her book to? She has lunch with her mother, but realizes that she doesn’t like her enough for a dedication; she meets up with a friend, goes to a party, pops into a bookshop, bumps into neighbors, sets out after a stranger… And gets nowhere. She makes her way back to her apartment building in the north of Paris, which, like everywhere else, is home to a thousand solitudes. With the disillusionment and dark humor of a female Houellebecq, Leila Bouherrafa presents a ruthlessly accurate vision of the world.

Life and Death of Joachim Gottschalk

Joachim Gottschalk was the most famous actor in Germany from the 1930s until 1941, when he committed suicide along with his wife and son. This novel relates his tragic fate, and through it, that of the greatest artists of that era.

In 1920s Berlin, Joachim Gottschalk’s talent gradually came to be recognized fame on the theatrical stage. He was the most promising young actor of his generation.

But while Joachim was going from success to success on stage and screen, his nation, Germany, was sliding into fascism. Married to Meta, a Jewish woman he was madly in love with, and devoted to his art, which gave his life meaning, Joachim became more divided day by day. The Nazis ordered him to choose between his art and his wife. In November 1941, the spouses committed suicide together, taking their son Michael with them.

The entire German art scene is portrayed through the family’s tragic fate; it was a scene in which everyone had to choose between exile, submission and death.

Denis Rossano

Denis Rossano is the author of A Childless Father (Un père sans enfants, Allary Editions, 2019); winner of the 2019 Société des Gens de Lettres Revelation Prize, it is currently being made into a movie.

Révélation 2019

The father, Douglas Sirk, was a theatre director in Germany in the ’20s and one of Goebbels’s favorite filmmakers in the ’30s. Married to a Jewish woman, he had to flee to the United States, where his melodramas allowed him to conquer Hollywood. The child was Klaus Detlef Sierck, Douglas’s son by his first wife, an unsuccessful actress who became a fervent Nazi. After their divorce in 1928, she wouldn’t allow him to see their four-year-old son, who she turned into a child star in the Nazi film industry.

PRESS & QUOTES

Denis Rossano’s book is an exceptional document, as enlightening as it is moving.

Denis Rossano has mixed investigation, film analysis, the life of Sirk and romantic scenes. The issues are extremely well dealt with, and the subject is thoroughly known.

This book is of striking beauty. Denis Rossano leaves his obscure lights, his diffusive nostalgia, his childlike tenderness for cinema, in an incandescent literature. Tragically beautiful.

A Childless Father allies the force of a documentary to the intensity of a tragedy.

Riad Sattouf

Riad Sattouf is a cartoonist and filmmaker. Born in 1978, he spent his childhood between Libya, Syria and Brittany. He has been drawing comics for twenty years and published more than twenty books. Riad Sattouf is one of the few graphic novel authors to have won the Fauve d’or at the Angoulême festival twice (for Pascal Brutal 3 in 2010 and The Arab of the Future 1 in 2015). As a filmmaker, he directed The French Kissers (Les Beaux Gosses, César for best debut film) and Jacky in Women’s Kingdom (Jacky au royaume des filles).

The Arab of the Future vol. 6

The internationally acclaimed bestselling graphic novel series.

In the same vein as Maus by Art Spiegelman and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, The Arab of the Future is an autobiographical and political graphic novel. Raised by a paranoid Syrian father who dreamed of being a dictator, it is with devastating humor and great sensitivity that Riad Sattouf talks about his childhood and the story of his family in the Libya of Mouammar Kadhafi and the Syria of Hafez el Assad.

Volume 1 (2014) covers the period from 1978 to 1984: from birth to the age of six, little Riad is shuttled between Libya, Brittany and Syria.

Volume 2 (2015) tells the story of his first year of school in Syria (1984-1985).

Volume 3 (2016) sees him between the ages of six and nine, the time he becomes aware of the society he is growing up in (1985-1987).

With 288 pp., volume 4 (2019) is longer than the other volumes and covers 1987 to 1992. It includes an overthrow of his father’s power, and is the most dramatic volume yet.

Volume 5 (2020) covers the period from 1992 to 1994. An international publishing phenomenon, the five already published volumes of The Arab of the Future have already sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide. Translated into 22 languages, the albums have been awarded multiple prizes, including the Grand prix RTL for graphic novels in 2014, the Fauve d’or (Best Album Prize) at the 2015 international festival of graphic novels in Angoulême and the Los Angeles Times Graphic Novel Prize in 2016.

PRESS & QUOTES

They reveal the easy charm also displayed in Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis volumes, setting up a central, and often amusing, tension between a pictured child protagonist and that same person’s adult, retrospective narration. The reader easily shuttles back and forth between naïve and knowing perspectives, the two combined in the space of a frame.

Not since Persepolis has a comic book seemed so important, or been so acclaimed… It has an authenticity with which no expert or talking head could ever hope to compete.

Excellent… An authentic, emotionally honest memoir and a useful background reading for present events.

First I devoured it. Then I started reading and looking at it slowly. Because The Arab of the Future is beautifully written and overflowing with details.

Esther’s Notebooks vol. 7

Based on true stories told by Esther A., Esther’s Notebooks draw us into the daily life of a girl talking about school, friends, family, and pop stars. Allary Editions publishes one volume per year, nine volumes in total. Each volume covers one year in the life of Esther, from her 10th through to her 18th year, and each contains 52 stories for the 52 weeks of the year.

Volume 1 (2016): Esther is 10 years old. Who are Tal, Kendji Girac, and the Hotheads? What are the criteria of beauty that make young boys and girls popular? What can you do when your friends have more money than you do? What does the ‘brutal-bridge’ game consist of? How did Esther’s class feel about the attacks in Paris in January 2015? What do you do if you’re worried about your breast size?

Volume 2 (2017): Esther is 11 years old. She tells us about the birth of her little brother, the terrorist attacks, the boys she is in love with, religious discussions with her best friend, her teacher with dwarfism, her mother who suddenly gained weight, her idiot big brother and her father, that hero...

Volume 3 (2018): Esther is a 12-year-old student in a prestigious college in the center of Paris. She is now a preteen! The presidential elections, her first cell phone, her hamster Manuela, the arrival of acne, her conspiring brother, her left-wing partisan father, her far-right voting grandmother, President Macron, the Illuminati, and her love for sausage-apricot cake... Esther talks about everything!

Volume 4 (2019): Esther is now 13, she leaves childhood and enters adolescence… In this volume Esther talks about her dental braces, #BalanceTonPorc (the French counterpart of the #metoo movement), her long-gone dreams, her secret boyfriend Ben, her friends, her family…

Volume 5 (2020): Esther is now 14 and learns to dance the floss, starts to take an interest in politics (just a little), wonders how we can live normally while the homeless sleep in the streets, and learns how to say “I don’t give a s*#@” in Spanish, thanks to her penpal Nacho. Of course she listens to Angèle, and imagines that all the young people of the world will save the Earth by joining hands.

Volume 6 (2021): It’s the year Esther turns 15 and is entering ninth grade, her last year of middle school! She reconnects with her BFFs Éva and Léa, puts up with some overly feminine girls who got left back, organizes her first big birthday party (with alcohol!), tries a cigarette and (finally) creates her Instagram profile, which inevitably attracts psychopaths.

Then everything gets thrown into chaos by the coronavirus... it’s lockdown time.

Volume 7 (2022): Esther is in tenth grade! This is the year she turns 16. Everyone smokes; it’s almost like a “drug empire.” Some of her friends are anti-vax. She still gets vaccinated, and by a fireman better looking than Timothée Chalamet. Her body changes – not because of the vaccine. She has to make her choices and invent her future life. To make some pocket money, she starts babysitting and even becomes a camp counselor.

At the Heart of Wounded Nature

Ecological literature, which sings the praises of the great open spaces and encounters with wild animals, contributes to maintaining our illusion that we live in the heart of unspoiled nature. But that world no longer exists, or only in zones circumscribed by humans, i.e. nature preserves. Many of the landscapes of our childhood are already gone.

This essay dares to take on the inconvenient questions that we can no longer ignore: in the age of global warming and the Anthropocene, what sensorial and emotional bonds can we weave with our environment? What kinds of pleasure and awe can we still find in it? Can we revive landscapes that have slipped away?

By leading us around the world, from the Baltic Sea to Lake Titicaca, via Taiwan, the Tiputa Pass and the hills of Burgundy, this book opens our eyes to damaged nature. Its lucidity is all the more necessary in that rather than bringing on apathy or sadness, it spurs us to get involved.

Alexandre Lacroix

Alexandre Lacroix is the editorin-chief of Philosophie magazine and founder of Words (Les Mots), a writing school. After A Contribution to the Theory of the Kiss (Contribution à la théorie du baiser, Autrement, 2011) and How Not to Become a Slave to the System (Comment ne pas devenir esclave du système?, Allary Éditions, 2021), with this volume, he continues his musings on a life that is good.

More and more of us are dreaming of breaking out of the system and of the constant, omnipresent insistence on maximizing profits. But this demands sacrifices that few of us are willing to make. The Future Is Female

What would a truly feminist society be like?

“Identity, sexuality, love and parenthood would be experienced without coercion or injunction. The answer to criminality would be reparation rather than exclusion. Focusing on caring for each other would change our relationship to work. Eco-feminism would lead us into a non-predatory relationship with nature.

Over the centuries, women thinkers focused on gender issues have developed enough tools to profoundly change every facet of society – above and beyond relations between men and women. Applying a feminist program to society means redefining the meaning of love, education, judgment, production and even life itself.

In this essay, which intertwines accessible feminist theory with more intimate narrative, I propose solutions to the most urgent issues of our times, in order to build a desirable future. The good news is that that future is now.” Lauren Bastide

Lauren Bastide

Lauren Bastide is a journalist, the creator of Gunpowder (La Poudre) – a feminist podcast with over 10 million downloads in which she interviews artists, activists and researchers, she also co-founder the Nouvelles écoutes production studio. She has been the editorin-chief of the magazine Elle, a commentator on Canal Plus, and the producer of the radio program “Les Savantes” (“The Female Savants”) on France Inter. With degrees in political science and gender studies, she has made women’s portrayal in the media the focus of both her professional and her activist concerns.

Marching. Women in the Public Sphere

“Being visible. Walking down the street without being afraid. Expressing our opinions loud and clear. That’s what society keeps women and minorities from doing. And that is this book’s agenda. With Marching, Lauren Bastide has written an extremely well-documented feminist manifesto, fuelled by reflections from the most inspiring activists of the #MeToo generation. A book to put in everyone’s hands in order to better understand today’s new feminist and antiracist political struggles.”

PRESS & QUOTES

Lauren Bastide delivers an ode to feminist revolutions, […] a manifesto dedicated to all those voices that are underrepresented, discriminated against, and discredited.

This striking and intimate manifesto denounces the invisibility of women in the public space.

Based in Marseille, Le bruit du monde focuses on world literature.

Our intention is to reveal outstanding fiction that transforms our vision on historical and present realities. We don’t shy away from modern issues while searching for unforgettable narratives and betting on the pleasure reading can bring. Le bruit du monde aims at enriching our fantasy, our empathy, and broadening our horizon.

We pick up the best of literature in translation while searching for francophone voices of international appeal without any restriction of genre.

The words « bruit » and « monde » carry an energy that echoes the constant mutations of the world, a world full of life and movement. Therefore Le bruit du monde captures the spirit of a publishing house that is the repository of global vibes.

There is no better soundbox than Marseille, from where we embark: a world city itself. This place was the obvious choice: Marseille, the oldest and liveliest city in France, the beacon of the Mediterannean identity, is full of stories to be told, tragic, solar, coming from all over the world.

The first books came out in March 2022 and received a wonderful acclaim!

The Neanderthal race has been recreated from fragments of DNA and reintroduced in a reservation where they have been observed and studied for several generations. PRESS & QUOTES

Noëlle Michel’s wonderfully conceived plot recalls classic cinematic memories (Jurassic Park, Hunger Games, The Truman Show, Quest for Fire…) while combining them with contemporary ethical considerations surrounding topics such as our relationships with nature, entertainment, the Other, and life itself. The Fire Within

The Comoros Islands: a place of history and fable, and a world of spirituality to discover. The Fire Within is a singular novel of initiation, which tilts into Arabian Nights-like wonder.

When the servant-girl Gaillard encounters Halima, daughter of one of the masters of the village of Itsandra while out collecting wood, little can she imagine the consequences their meeting will bring.

Halima has run away from home, trying to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her, and, though Gaillard is unable to help her, the connection they develop is powerful. Before returning to carry out her father’s wishes, Halima gives Gaillard a magical object to hold onto.

Ten years later, Halima returns. In the meantime, Gaillard has grown. She has been taught how to read and interpret the Koran by her master, and has been introduced to the legends of her ancestors thanks to her adoptive mother.

As the women’s paths cross once again, the object Halima left to her begins to reveal its secrets, taking Gaillard on a journey beyond time, self and memory to a place of spiritual enlightenment and a greater understanding of her place in the world.

Touhfat Mouhtare

Born in 1986 in Moroni (Comoros), Touhfat Mouhtare grew up between her island and several other SubSaharan African nations. Today she lives in France.

Her first novel, Raw Green (Vert cru) was published in 2018, and she is also the author of the short story collection Âmes supendues (Coelacanthe, 2011).

Set on the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean, The Fire Within is a novel of selfdiscovery, spiritual yearning and how the bonds we form with those we love transcend time and space.

Written in lucid, delicate and poetic prose, Gaillard’s story blends a precise and sensitive understanding of the specific culture in which she lives, with a dreamlike magic of fable and fantasy, recalling tales such as those of A Thousand and One Nights

PRESS & QUOTES

I was overwhelmed by the joyful richness this novel offers on so many different levels, from everyday life in Comoros to the exuberant fantasy that draws on diverse traditions, such as the djinn of cosmological Indian legend, Soufi mysticism and African animalism. It’s a book that bears witness to a meeting between Chinua Achebe, Salman Rushdie, Emmanuel Dongala and Elif Shafak.

— MARIE DESMEURES, EDITOR LE BRUIT DU MONDE

The Comorian author Touhfat Mouhtare uses her pen to sing the songs of oppressed women, thirsting for love and freedom. … We can feel a feminist spirit in [her] song-like writing. She depicts the ordinary people in the same way as Djaïli Amadou Amal or Arundhati Roy.

A World That Was Ours

A social and political chronicle of the end of shipbuilding in the South of France. Friendship, love and the brutal realities of struggling workers recounted in sensitive and touching prose.

A son fighting to realize his father’s dreams.

Born in the port, and having grown up with sights and sounds of its industry, Narval is proud to take his place among the gruff and hardworking shipbuilders of Seynesur-Mer. Not only is he following in his father’s footsteps, but also that of a tradition stretching back over a century. Conditions are tough, the work often brutal, but the men of the docks have their dignity and, above all, their bond.

As the 1970’s draw to a close, however, the future looks uncertain. There is less and less work and, soon, despite the promise of a newly elected Socialist president, Narval and his companions must face the closure of the shipyard and the loss of their jobs. For all they protest, the world is changing, and they are being left behind.

In lucid and sensitive prose, Christian Astolfi depicts the deindustrialisation of the 1980s through the life of a worker as he confronts the political and social upheavals that beset France at the end of the 20th century. Resounding with understated melancholy, Narval’s bittersweet reminiscences not only offer a distinct perspective on the grand movements of our recent history, but, through their insight and humanity, shed light on intimate moments of affection, joy and companionship which, despite life’s disappointments, provide us all with glimmers of hope.

Christian Astolfi

Born in Toulon in 1958, Christian Astolfi lives in Marseille. His first novel, Les Tambours de pierre, was selected for the Robert Walser Prize (Switzerland) as well as the 2008 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Students and Apprentices Prize for Literature. Une Peine capitale (Flammarion, 2014) won the Second Novel Prize from bookshop-printer’s Colophon. His third book, Cette fois je ne t’attendrai pas, was published in November 2018.

“I will never say I work in shipyards, but that I am a shipbuilder.”

From the publisher of Le bruit du monde, Marie-Pierre Gracedieu: “I grew up in the 1980s, the decade when the process of deindustrialisation in France began, without the population being aware of its consequences. Publishing a text that offers a tribute to the work done in these places, while avoiding any form of Manichaeism or didacticism, fits perfectly within our editorial perspective. Christian Astolfi upholds the memory of that world, all the forgotten crafts, its monumental, man-made constructions, but also confronts its infamy, its conflicts and its oblivion. The shipyards were a place of labour where people suffered, got hurt and sometimes died but they were also somewhere they could laugh and dream, about travel, love and a brighter future.”

PRESS & QUOTES

This novel, as beautiful as a chanson de geste, inscribes the glorious and tragic history of workers in the legend of the centuries.

Two lovers torn apart by the forces of history.

A universal tale of exile, separation and transmission.

The 1990s: Emily and Daniel meet in law school in Bordeaux and fall in love.

Emily is an American from the midwest, sensitive and shy; Daniel Atlas is an Algerian Jew whose stylish pose hides a tormented history. When civil war breaks out in Algeria, he returns to El Biar, where he finds his parents threatened and isolated. This illustrious family of merchants, anchored in Algeria for a thousand years, remains true to their homeland through French colonization and independence. While their community disappears around them, they choose to stay.

2016: Becca, a young American looking for her roots, travels to Algiers to understand the meaning of the Atlas legacy.

Through a delicate and deeply touching personal history, set against the backdrop of political upheaval, Maison Atlas propels us through the meanders of love in a time of war.

Born in Minneapolis in 1954, Alice Kaplan divides her time between Connecticut, France and Algeria. A finalist for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Henry Adams prize, she is known for the narrative power of her creative non-fiction, in The Collaborator, The Interpreter, Dreaming in French, and Looking for The Stranger Maison Atlas is her first novel.

“Suddenly you’re the king of the Jews?”: His father’s mockery would come back to him. That’s what he was alright, a king without a kingdom. Every stroke of fate sent him back to Algiers: his father’s assassination, the need to safeguard his family’s property, his friendships, and then his love.

PRESS & QUOTES

A novel focused on the inexorable, irreversible, agonizing fate of all those facing persecution - those whose only choice is to abandon their country.

— ELLE

A sounding board and a window onto the universe of Algeria with its cargoes of ghosts.

— LIBÉRATION

A poetics of absence at its core, reminiscent of Modiano..a novel about memory (and sometimes oblivion). About Judaism as a palimpsest for lost love.

What We Most Desire

A journey that is both singular and universal. With What We Most Desire, awardwinning author Caroline Laurent brilliantly follows in the footsteps of Annie Ernaux and Deborah Levy.

One day a friend dies, and by dying she gives birth to myself. What unites us: a book.

Her last novel, my first novel, entwined in a single volume. Such a beautiful story.

Five years later, the ground shifts under my feet when I read another book, which breaks the silence of an incestuous family. My heart freezes; I no longer breathe. These people I loved, and who loved me, were not the ones I thought they were?

I was not the victim of this drama. However, an unknown pain dug a hole in me.

Caroline Laurent

Caroline Laurent is FrancoMauritian. After the success of her book co-written with Évelyne Pisier, Et soudain, la liberté (Les Escales, 2017; Pocket, 2018; Prix Marguerite Duras; Grand Prix des Lycéennes de ELLE; Prix Première Plume), which has been translated in many countries, she published Rivage de la colère (winner of a dozen awards, including the Prix Maison de la Presse 2020; the Prix du Roman Métis des Lecteurs et des Lycéens, the Prix Louis-Guilloux and the Prix Bourdarie de l’Académie des Sciences d’Outre-Mer), a novel adapted into a comic strip published by Philéas.

For a year, I fought against grief and madness. I thought I had lost everything: my joy, my bearings, my confidence, my desire. Writing was impossible. It was to forget the deep consolations. The beauty of the world. The body in motion. The impulse of women who write: Deborah Levy, Annie Ernaux, Joan Didion… So to hold on for dear life. One morning, writing will return.

PRESS & QUOTES

In this essential and wildly moving text, Caroline Laurent invites us to a frantic dance with women who write, drawing from literature the consoling power necessary for the act of writing. An indispensable read where each word is a gesture, a step.

A dance. It is a story of filial love and betrayal. Destruction and then reconstruction. an ode to reading as reparation, to writing as rebirth. A cathartic book.

The Ogre's Daughter

The moving portrait of a woman in love with freedom, whose destiny is marred by tragedy. Fiction and historical reality intertwine to reveal the little-known story of Flor de Oro Trujillo, daughter of the terrible and bloody dictator of the Dominican Republic.

1915. Flor de Oro was born in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. Her father, a crook turned military man, aims for nothing less than being head of state. He is determined to make his daughter a cultured and sophisticated woman who lives up to his own ambition. So she left her family to attend a boarding school in France, the most exclusive secondary school for young girls in the country.

When her father takes power, Flor de Oro returns to her island and meets the man who will become her first husband, Porfirio Rubirosa, a louche playboy, half gigolo, half diplomat-spy, whom she marries at seventeen. But Trujillo, only master after God, intends to control his daughter’s life. She must obey him like all the Dominicans who have to submit to the Jefe, this bloodthirsty dictator.

Marked by the hold of these two men with their noxious love, from marriages to exiles, from Nazi Germany to the United States, from grace to disgrace, Flor de Oro will struggle all her life to free herself from their yoke.

Catherine Bardon

After a career in communications, Catherine Bardon now devotes herself to writing and divides her time between France and the Dominican Republic. She is the author of the saga Les Déracinés, which has sold more than 500,000 copies and has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Wizo Prize and the first novel of Chambéry Festival in 2019. In just a few novels, Catherine Bardon has established herself as a major voice in the French novelistic landscape.

PRESS & QUOTES

An excellent fictionalized work, enriched with iconographic documents, which teaches us more about this woman with a shattering destiny than a simple biography.

Impossible not to be moved by this book, which sheds light on a woman in the shadows.

Catherine Bardon has a sense of portraiture and the art of blending the story of an individual fate into the noria of collective human adventures.

The Aquatic Ones

A powerful debut novel by Osvalde Lewat, a renowned documentary film-maker. A striking story leading to a new vision of the French-speaking African societies today. Les Aquatiques is set in a fictional African country and tells the coming of age story of Katme.

She is a woman in her early forties, married to a local politician whose life will be turned upside down when her husband’s political ambitions collide with her personal life: Her best friend, Samy, an artist whom she subsidizes is gay and will be thrown in jail because of her and her husband. The consequences will be devastating for Samy and for Katme.

The Aquatic Ones is a universal story because it tells how this woman has to reinvent herself and how she will face up to the challenges life offers her. The writing is brutally honest, cynical, it also manages to be laugh out loud funny as well as totally heartbreaking. It is also a picture of modern-day Africa, the struggles for a more just society.

Nothing Really Lasts Long

The first, unprecedented first-hand account by a former crack addict.

His diction is that of a hurried little boy. The images he conjures are like shots fired within your soul. Matthieu Seel—“Charles” in the book—relates his journey without a second of downtime.

His anonymous birth, his life as a kid with a thousand questions, a kid who wants to grow up too quickly in hopes of answering them someday, his first steps, then his first joints in the 19th arrondissement of Paris where he grew up and in the elegant gardens of the Rive Gauche where he chose his lifelong moniker, his crack-induced wanderings through the streets, the Metro, parking lots, and Crack Hill in northern Paris, he holds nothing back.

The Willing Doll

This is the book I would have loved to give to my daughter on her sixteenth birthday.

A smart, compelling, multi-narrative novel that explores the question of consent at prestigious universities and among France’s Catholic bourgeoisie.

The late 80s. An engineering school built in a new city far from everything. Hazing, parties, first times. Sixteen-year-old Arielle, who was raised in the polite society of the Versailles elite, fantasizes about boys and sex. As she drifts through this new life so far removed from her roots, she crosses path with Eric, a captivating student six years her senior.

For Inès, her daughter leaving the nest is an opportunity to relive her own past: her break from an insular world molded by tradition, the freedom afforded by a room of her own, and then, all too quickly, a pregnancy, loneliness, and her return to square one.

As Arielle explores the world of sex and tries to find her biological father, Inès increasingly suffers from debilitating fears. What if this heavy silence pollutes their mother-daughter relationship? What if her own flesh and blood is also introduced to sex in a disembodied state?

Unspeakable violence. A reality which Inès can no longer escape, 20 years after the fact.

From a tragedy that impacts so many women, Agnès de Clairville has penned a radiant novel in which stupor, anger, tenderness, and ruthless clarity exist side by side.

Agnès de Clairville

Agnès de Clairville was born in Normandy in 1968 and currently lives in Marseille. A scientist by trade, she first explored photography before focusing her creative efforts on writing. The Willing Doll is her first novel.

PRESS & QUOTES

A text to be placed in all hands.

The silence is finally broken. But the violence will not go away.

Lalalangue

Everybody Take Some and Eat It All Up

It all starts with the myth.

A pregnant young woman climbs the Calanques in Marseille with the man she loves. The mountains are her whole life. But a boulder crumbles and her lover drags her down with him. The young woman falls into a coma. When she wakes up and learns she has lost her twins and one of her legs, all she has to say is, “I’ll take it out on the children.” This woman, the author’s mother, kept her promise.

Frédérique is the youngest of seven siblings. She spent her childhood struggling with shame, mysticism, fear, and dread.

Her one-legged mother’s prostheses. Chopin’s Nocturnes played by her ghostly father. The drunk, homeless friends in the living room and an obsessive need to salvage and reuse things to minimize waste. Pleasure was off limits if you hoped to gain access to a hypothetical heaven. And Jesus Christ. A cheapskate voyeur who kept an eye on her through it all. The beliefs and expressions brought to life by a family, and the devastating madness of a mother.

Frédérique Voruz

Frédérique Voruz is an actor and writer who began her career at the age of 21 with Ariane Mnouchkine and the Théâtre du Soleil troupe. In 2016, she left them to put on her one-woman show, Lalalangue – Everybody Take Some and Eat It All Up, directed by Simon Abkarian, a fellow cast member from Electre des bas-fonds, which won three Molière awards in 2020. Her onewoman show has become her first book, a cruel but hilarious tale about maternal savagery.

But there was laughter, too, and a quest for a gaze that would upend beliefs she believed were eternal: on the stage of a theater or a psychoanalyst’s couch, words are a weapon for healing.

Without a hint of complacency and with a hefty dose of ferocious humor, Frédérique Voruz takes a close look at her family and herself.

With this first book she delivers a chilling account of what it’s like to be a child in hostile territory. It’s a cruel fairy tale where the ogre is actually an ogress, an extraordinary story of survival.

In the Gothic vein, an inexhaustible source of literary inspiration whose endless adaptations continue to appeal to readers: Alone in Her Home (Seule en sa demeure), Cécile Coulon (L’Iconoclaste), Blackwater, Micheal McDowell (Monsieur Toussaint Louverture) and more.

An exceptional publication from Éditions de La Martinière Littérature, on the occasion of the 2022 Fall literary season. The Trompe-l’Oeil-Filled Castle is a tribute to the great Gothic novels of the 19th century. Written in a venomously sensual style, the edition is enriched with 9 illustrated plates. A novel with a unique and fascinating atmosphere that explores ever-timely topics.

In post-revolutionary France, Baptiste, a young notary’s clerk, is heading for the estate of the Baroness d’Escreuil near the Mont Saint Michel. He will stay there while he assesses her fortune. But once he gets there, nothing goes according to plan: the mysterious baroness is conspicuously absent; in fact, no one has seen her for nearly twenty years!

One night, the long wait combined with Baptiste’s curiosity get the better of him, and he decides to explore the huge castle. That’s when he stumbles across the library’s “Hell” section, where the most subversive books of the time are stored. The discovery awakens forbidden desire in him… as well as an anxiety that grows ever greater. Strange events begin to take place: a mysterious threatening note appears, door handles shake in the middle of the night, nocturnal encounters by candle-light, and more. The castle gradually turns into a setting for the unspoken and misleading, for long-buried desires and secrets.

Panic at the Auction House

A fascinating dive into the world of the art market where master paintings rule, and murders, disappearances and death threaten.

An auctioneer was murdered mid-auction at the Drouot auction house. The murder weapon? An iron maiden, a medieval instrument of torture. Commander Vicaux and his assistant Laetitia are charged with solving this crime that is shaking the Parisian art market. At his side is a former paparazzo investigating the unexplained disappearance of three young women. At first glance, nothing links these two cases, but in the mysterious atmosphere of the corridors of Drouot, the most surprising secrets are never far away.

With Panic at the Auction House, Eric Mercier has written a new brilliant thriller with an intriguing plot, an unexpected ending, and elusive and troubled characters. Commander Vicaux, cold and mysterious, reveals himself to be a man of rare perception. His assistant, Laetitia, who knows Nietzsche and Schopenhauer by heart, is cheerful and witty. The two form a duo of investigators as extraordinary as they are endearing.

Eric Mercier

Eric Mercier worked in finance for 25 years before giving it up for art and writing a thesis on figurative painting from the 1950s. A Ph.D. in art history and an exhibit curator, his first novel, Under Buffet’s Skin (Dans la peau de Buffet, Éditions Anfortas, 2018), won the debut novel prize at the Draveil Book Fair.

ALSO AVAILABLE

Fauves

Tattered shreds of human flesh have been found in the pigsty at the farm in the Bois de Vincennes, just outside Paris. It’s tough to identify a body when there are only scraps! Yet with the help of his deputy, Laetitia Roux, Police Chief Frédéric Vicaux manages to track down the identity of the victim: he was a rich Parisian art dealer. A fascinating and realistic exploration of the world of high-priced art, ruled by Fauvist masterpieces, low blows, and death threats. The victim was a rich Parisian art dealer who enjoyed a lavish lifestyle: a luxurious apartment in an upscale arrondissement with priceless works by Fauvist masters – Matisse, Vlaminck, Dufy, and more.

With Fauves, Eric Mercier serves up a skillful, fast-paced detective novel with a surprising final twist. The main characters are elusive and opaque. Poker-faced, gloomy Chief Vicaux turns out to be exceptionally perspicacious. Although his deputy, Laetitia Roux, knows Nietzsche and Schopenhauer by heart, she can also be cheerful and cheeky. Together they make for an atypical and endearing duo of detectives..

The Night of the Angels

Back at her childhood home, Alice finds herself at the heart of an investigation of a disturbing child disappearance, twenty-five years after a similar tragedy…

Alice, a divorced young mother, decides to return to Perros-Guirec, the hometown she left 10 years before. She hopes to reconnect with both her parents and the familiar landscapes, and to put the painful past behind her. Instead, the beach town in Brittany that holds so many memories for her soon begins to fill her with dread. Her parents have become strangers, her childhood sweetheart is obsessed with his sister’s disappearance a quarter of a century earlier, and once-familiar faces are just ghostly memories now.

Soon the whole town becomes panic-stricken when a little girl disappears. It is the beginning of a veritable nightmare for Alice, who gets sucked into a dual investigation of both past and present.

In this fast-paced first novel, Anna Tommasi cleverly juggles the discomfort of feeling like one has lost one’s bearing and the poison of buried secrets. Skillfully handled from start to finish, it’s a real page-turner!

PRESS & QUOTES

A very gripping, even agonising psychological thriller.

Anna Tommasi

Anna Tommasi was born in 1986 and grew up between Sète, a coastal city near the French Riviera, and the Paris area. Having trained to be an engineer, she travelled the world before settling down in Lyon, where she now lives in a happily blended family. La Nuit des anges is her first novel.

An absolutely gripping first novel (…) Even those who are not usually too fond of investigative stories and other thrillers will fall under the spell of La Nuit des anges.

Anna Tommasi plays with our nerves to the point where it seems that, behind every corner, ghosts and buried secrets are ready to jump down our throats. Chilling.

A novel that very honestly holds its place as a thriller, that has some originality in the criminal scenario, that proposes characters that we could easily cross in the street. The structure allowed it to sustain attention. For my part, it has played its role as page turner. I had great pleasure reading it.

— CRITIQUESLIBRES.COM

No doubt because the story takes place in a beautiful region of France (the beach of Trestraou and the port of Ploumanac’h seem indeed beautiful places to visit), no doubt also because the characters of the novel are very endearing, Anna Tomassi’s first book charms us and, above all, intrigues us (which is the least a thriller worthy of the name can do).

After Solveig’s Winter, winner of the Kobo by Fnac Novel Prize, in L’Envol des amazones Reine Andrieu relates the story of a family secret buried deep in the twists and turns of the past. An incredibly moving tale, rich in intensity and emotion, that takes readers from southwestern France to French Guyana.

1921: Leon, 19, is a convict of the penal colony in Cayenne, France’s overseas purgatory. The only things that give him the courage to keep going are writing letters to his fiancée, Marguerite, reading newspaper articles about the Aéropostale pioneers, and dreaming about becoming a pilot when he is freed.

2015: Sorting her father’s papers after his death, Lola comes across a mysterious letter sent almost a century before from Saint Laurent du Maroni. The letter reveals an entire chapter in her family’s history that she hadn’t known about.

Reine Andrieu

After having obtained a degree in business, Reine Andrieu went back to school to become a librarian, a profession she enjoyed for 13 years. She now lives in French Guiana, where she devotes herself full-time to writing. After Solveig’s Winter (L’Hiver de Solveig), L’Envol des amazones is her second novel.

As Diego Martín is trying to interview the famous Don Fernando, a.k.a. El Matador, the head of a powerful drug cartel in Mexico, his girlfriend, Carolina, a professor of law specializing in criminal affairs at the University of Madrid, has been receiving more and more insistent death threats. What a Wonderful World

Paul Colize is at the height of his writing skills: in a 1970’s scenery, he conveys a very subtle, stunning and moving face to face. He reveals the light and shadow in mankind and that even if we cannot change the past, we have the power to change the present.

October 1973.

Driving in the Mercedes 220D, behind the steering wheel, Daniel Sabre, a giant wearing a well cut and dark moustache, tries very hard to calm down. His orders: do whatever his passenger will ask him to do. Go wherever the lady sitting at the back asks him to go. At the rear of the car, Marlène seems to have a lot to deal with.

In the following hours, Daniel does not know how deeply his beliefs, his world will fall apart: this road trip through Europe (Belgium, Germany, France, Spain) will turn out to be more an inner and “coming of age” journey that will change Daniel and Marlène forever. Within a week they will travel through Europe but also through time and memories, and will both find answers to personal questions shut for decades.

Pandemonium in Academia

Many people are crying out in panic over the alleged assault on academia by feminists and anti-racists, who threaten the whole of society in the name of “political correctness”. To stimulate collective panic, they raise appalling scarecrows – social justice warriors, islamoleftists, wokes, gender studies – and conjure up the most violent events in history: witch hunts, lynchings, totalitarianism, extermination.

Even heads of state are taking up the cause. But not only is this agitation based on exaggerations and lies, it is also part of a manipulative approach that locks up minds and hinders intellectual curiosity, academic freedom and the development of knowledge.

To shed some light on the issue, this essay looks at the ancient and recent history of the university. It invites us to consider the real role of gender studies and critical race theory in academia, and points to the forces that are actually leading the charge in the U.S., France, and Quebec. Ultimately, it is an effort to deconstruct reactionary propaganda.

Vote No More A Plea for Abstention

To vote or not to vote, that is the question we do not dare to ask in our parliamentary systems, where elections are considered a sacred ritual. By defending the legitimacy of abstention, this essay confronts the conviction that voting is a duty, and that refusing to vote is a dangerous heresy. Much more than a mere praise for abstention, this book offers a radical critique of the electoral system. In addition to recalling the reasons given by abstainers from all walks of life for not going to vote, the author describes the often amusing strategies devised to subvert the electoral game.

Anarchy Explained to My Father

What is anarchy and what do anarchists want? A humanist questions his son, an anarchist activist who has studied the subject. Through their dialogue, the two men explore the roots of anarchy and democracy. They evoke certain figures and the different currents of the anarchist movement, while illustrating their remarks with examples drawn from today’s world. Together, they analyze anarchist critique of the major systems of domination – the state, religion, patriarchy, capitalism, and racism – and thus offer an original initiation to anarchy.

From Big Pharma to the Common A Critical Vade Mecum

The Covid crisis is an almost caricatural illustration of how the economics of pharmaceuticals condemns us to inexorably reduce the number of people who have access to health innovations - in poor and rich countries alike. Changing this trajectory, and avoiding the multiplication of sorting on an economic basis, requires a precise understanding of the current dysfunctions, distortions and abuses in order to suggest alternative ways of manufacturing and managing products on which our lives may depend.

What are the symptoms that affect the pharmaceutical economy? What diagnoses can be established on the basis of these manifestations of dysfunction? What could be the treatments for this failing system? A short and concise book that provides solid arguments for a re-invention of the economics of pharmaceuticals.

Mores From the Cannibal Left to the Vandal Right

This book questions the difficulty of conceiving collective emancipation in a world dominated by capitalist technocracy and individualism. Alain Deneault pursues the ideas found in his previous essays La médiocratie and Politique de l’extrême centre. He invites us to break with the dynamics of identity-based quarrels where everyone uses their own conscience as a stick to hit others, and in which everyone seems to let the world run to its ruin, as long as his or her cause and interest advance here and now. He deplores the degradation of important categories into slogans and clichés, and reminds us that underneath these debates lie precious issues and desires that must be urgently brought out of the rubble.

Excerpt:

To identify a common crisis among progressives and conservatives is not to turn them back on each other. No inverted symmetry here, but a reflection engaged in complex fields aiming to put forward not so much an evolution of mores as a dilution of these. Today, the possibility of morals, of a common world, of shared customs, is undermined. This is what is shown by the proliferation of identity and moral quarrels which, too often, instrumentalize ideas instead of expressing them and thinking them. Mores can only be thought of in relation to a society in the light of its general evolution. It is a matter of collective intelligence.

Mediocracy

In this book, Alain Deneault offers an incisive and at times caustic analysis of the reign of mediocrity, which sterilizes the human mind by spreading a reckless love for cultural and political tepidness. Mediocrity is a social order that permanently threatens to collapse in the middle.

The Politics of the Extreme Center

“What is to be done?” Lenin’s question once initiated reflections for building a new order. It is now rhetorical: Tell me I can’t do anything as I don’t have the strength to actively engage in the act of resistance the circumstances call for. We pitifully look for a De Gaulle to respond to, or a Ghandi to massively imitate — but each of us in his own corner. At this stage of political dereliction, indeed, what is to be done? Stop the indignation and move on to the next question.

In the 21st century, this is a major challenge for the human sciences: to bring together the pieces of the puzzle into a coherent whole, to put the pieces of knowledge back together, to regain the momentum of the founders while drawing on the rich material of accumulated knowledge and being guided by the problems and questions of today.

Éditions Sciences Humaines offers readers a state of knowledge in the different disciplines that make up the “human sciences” - psychology, communication, philosophy, sociology, history, anthropology, ethnology, education and training, political science, as well as on the various related themes: organizations, the brain, religion, the individual, adolescence, power...

Éditions Sciences Humaines is aimed at all those (students, trainers, teachers, decisionmakers, amateurs and the curious) who wish to understand and know the contemporary world and the people who shape it, through demanding and rigorous works but always guided by the concern to preserve the pleasure of reading and discovery.

For more than 30 years, Sciences Humaines, faithful to its intellectual project, to its spirit of synthesis and clarity, has continued independently to promote reason, knowledge, general culture, pedagogy, defending humanism, and promoting a pluralist and enlightened debate.

Today, it is with children that we wish to share our knowledge, in order to give them the tools to make them aware of the scientific spirit and to show them how knowledge is built, through experiments, observations, and investigations, but also in how to fight against disinformation.

Our books, aimed at children aged 8 to 11, are written in close collaboration with scientists and richly illustrated to be as accessible as possible.

The Animals and Us

For a long time, Homo sapiens felt so different from animals that he thought he was superior to them, and it was only in the 18th century that science taught him again that he was one of them. However, the Man continues to enslave them, raise them to eat them, use them for his own needs and pleasure, destroy them, voluntarily or not. But the Man loves to be surrounded by pets, and with some he shares all his privileges, as he would with his own children. The Great History of Feminism

Since its origins, the women’s movement has expended phenomenal energy to defend women’s rights. Activists have had to demonstrate courage, tenacity and creativity. The recipe for their success is largely due to the diversity of rhetoric and the original mobilisations they have deployed.

Feminism has been plural from the start. It is part of the currents of thought of its time: liberal, socialist and revolutionary; differentialist, Marxist or materialist at the time of theories of social domination; lesbian, egalitarian, care, ecological, transhumanist, queer nowadays, with the triumph of identity quests.

Of course, certain currents have tried to gain the upper hand. The battles were sometimes heated and even violent, but the union prevailed in defence of women’s rights.

As an open door to other ways of perceiving collective life and the place of each individual, feminism has not finished writing its history and, in so doing, providing another view of our common humanity.

It is this great history, alive and exciting, that we tell you in this book.

Psychology of Animals

What makes man such an exceptional creature, so unique that some claim we are forged in the image of God himself? We are the only ones to have dreamed of walking on the Moon. The only ones crazy enough to have decided that we were capable of doing it, and to have done it! We are also the only ones capable of making ourselves sick to death by brooding over the things we shouldn’t have done. It is the nature of mankind to wonder what is the nature of our species. And of others!

This is where animal psychology, ethology, and psychology in general come in, to understand why other animals fascinate us, how we are similar to each other, and how we differ.

Four Questions on Philosophy

What can I know?

What should I do?

What can I hope for?

What is humankind?

Kant claimed that these four questions cover almost the entire field of philosophy.

– The first question refers to the theory of knowledge. It can be understood as the search for an ultimate truth, a method for good thinking or as a school of doubt.

– The second question refers to the meaning we give to our life: do we find it in happiness, the accomplishment of things, or the desire to do good?

– The third question raises the issue of salvation. It leads some to wonder about the existence of eternal salvation, others to hope for a better life.

– Finally, as Kant said at the end of his life, a last question: “What is humankind?” could integrate the previous questions, for this fourth question invites reflection on the human condition.

These four questions will serve as a guide to explore the twists and turns of 2,500 years of philosophy. Each question is a gateway to several possible answers. Each answer is illustrated by a reference author, a theory, or a canonical school of thought.

The different philosophical discourses will therefore be listened to with benevolence, without bias, but without fawning. We will not hesitate to push them to their limits, to underline their weaknesses as well as their absences, teasing them in the process. For nothing should be more alien to the philosophical spirit than the dogmatic spirit.

In this way, everyone can make their own way and follow their own path.

Founded in March 2017 with the publication of L’Impérial Socialiste by Didier Van Cauwelaert a.k.a Louis Badinguet, Massot Éditions is a generalist publishing house that accompanies evolutions in society, whether practical, scientific, or spiritual, and provides the tools to participate in this change.

Massot Éditions is directed by Florent Massot, independent editor for 35 years and discoverer of numerous authors in France. With this new house, he is continuing his lifelong commitment to publishing works that create breakthroughs and build bridges to help everyone get through the world’s crises. He also always aimed to create a space where up-and-coming generations of writers can express themselves.

The publishing house intends to publish 20 to 30 titles per year in a variety of novels, essays, and comic strips. The catalogue is multifaceted, as is current social change. That’s why you will find a range of options from calls to action – like the Dalai Lama’s A Call for Revolution, The Crazy Toad Manifesto, and How We’re Going to Save the World for Climate Justice – to militant-feminist comics and graphic novels, like the Another Look on... series by the blogger Emma, and Zainab Fasiki’s Hshouma, as well as disturbing texts like Juan Branco’s Crepuscule, co-published with Le Diable Vauvert.

But Massot Editions’ books also accompany our inner evolutions, like Malory Malmasson’s Soul Dating, and explore the invisible world: An Alchemist Speaks by Patrick Burensteinas and Go You Know Not Where by Laurence de La Baume.

Extraordinary reading experiences are also proposed, from a metaphysical novel (Pascal Bacqué’s two volumes) to a deep-learning textbook, which was translated into French by A.I.

These texts will make people think, shake them up, and inspire them.

Super Cyprine

A Corrosive Vengeance

Cyprine is a teenager growing up in a small suburb of Dijon. She likes boys (a lot), athletics, and chatting with her friend Sara, and she’s also top of her class – a bright future seems to beckon. Once she has her baccalauréat, she begins to study medicine, but her heart is not really in it. And she has a secret that is ruining her life: her cyprine (vaginal fluid) is corrosive – all the men she has touched have had their skin burned and have ended up in the hospital. So overnight, she decides to leave her parents, home city, and university behind to head for Paris. The young woman works as barmaid in an offbeat cabaret called ‘Mme Joséphine’ in the heart of Pigalle and strikes up friendships with the dancers and nighttime artists.

But all alone in the capital, Cyprine is also vulnerable to harassment and violence at the hands of men. Finally, after one insult too many, she decides to make use of her cyprine. Why not use this power she has to avenge women?

Featuring contemporary-style drawings and an appealing imaginary world, this is the coming-of-age tale of a heroine who tries to fight on behalf of women as she carves out her own place in society.

Tess Kinski

Tess Kinski is a feminist author and illustrator. After being harassed in the street, she came up with the idea for a vengeful female superhero with a destructive superpower. She took up the comic book form specifically to tell this story. She lives in the heart of the Grenoble mountains.

PRESS & QUOTES

It is a pleasure to read this comic book, which tackles with frankness and courage the fight against harassment, which must be talked about in order to learn and educate, and which talks about cyprine with humour and derision.

There is a clear burlesque dimension, which is represented through cabaret.

Ronald Drabkin

Ronald Drabkin, who is fluent in Japanese, is uniquely equipped to write the story of Beverly Hills Spy due to his dogged and comprehensive research into buried, previously undisclosed, or inaccessible (to most) files from Japanese Intelligence, MI5, and the FBI and on three continents in over a dozen libraries.

Drabkin’s personal connection to espionage is what drew him to uncover and tell the Frederick Rutland story. His father and grandfather were both spies in Los Angeles. Rutland knew his family and, though this book is the story of Rutland, it is also, in a small way, a tribute to his father and grandfather. Drabkin has spent his professional career in Silicon Valley. In the last 20 years, he has raised over $70m in venture capital for various startups and earned a position as a visiting scholar at the University of Notre Dame.

Beverly Hills Spy

The true story of how a British war hero helped the Japanese navy ahead of the attack on Pearl Harbor by infiltrating Golden Age Hollywood– and how the FBI, MI5, and the US Navy missed it.

This book recounts the true and up-to-now incomplete tale of Frederick Rutland.

After more than four years of rigorous research across three continents, Ronald Drabkin tells the true, never-before-told-in-full story of Frederick Rutland, a James Bondesque, debonair, crafty, decorated war hero and flying ace who flipped to become a spy for Japan.

Rutland supplied critical intelligence leading up to Japan’s entry into WWII and the attack on Pearl Harbor by becoming a fixture of Los Angeles society, a friend of Golden Age Hollywood A-listers, a welcomed advisor of U.S. military aeronautical development and a confidante and agent of the Japanese military hierarchy.

Now, with recently released files and dogged examination and translation, we see that both Rutland’s wild and colorful exploits plus a very costly oversight of both America’s FBI and Britain’s MI5 helped lead to one of the U.S.’s worst disasters.

Due primarily to recently declassified FBI files and by incorporating unique and rare research that few English speakers have access to, through access to MI5 and Japanese Naval archives, Drabkin who is fluent in Japanese compiles and retells the story of one of the most fascinating and compelling characters of WWII.

The Hollywood Reporter and The Express (UK) have already profiled the story.

Notables who feature in the book:

• British Royals

Charlie Chaplin

• J. Edgar Hoover

• Ian Fleming (Asst. Director, MI5)

• “K” (or as in Bond films, “M”), Director of MI5

Alan Mowbray (founder Screen Actors Guild)

• Yoko Ono’s father

• Admiral Yamamoto (Commander of the attack on Pearl Harbor)

Sovereignty

The Science of Life on Your Own Terms

“Sovereignty helps emancipate readers from the many ways in which they subjugate themselves (knowingly or unknowingly) at every level of their existence.

As our lives become more cerebral, urban and virtual, we are more and more disconnected from our bodies, our minds, our emotions, and our environment. From our very selves. Well over 50% of people across industries are burned out, disinterested (work engagement levels are very low at 34%, according to Gallup), overwhelmed and down– we are prone to fear and easily influenced by outside forces. The pandemic has further sent us into a state of languishing and dramatically increased mental health problems. People have started looking for answers and they continue to reevaluate what’s most important and how they want to live their lives.

The pandemic’s great resignation, in which 4.5 million people voluntarily quit their jobs because they didn’t want to go back to the office or comply with mandates demonstrates just how many people are sick of the status quo and want to live life on their own terms. They want to own their lives, perhaps for the first time. The pandemic, by making us face the reality of death also woke people up to the value of life – and how we want to live it. This is why I am writing Sovereignty.

This book is a manual, a roadmap, a manifesto by which we can systematically become aware of all the areas in our lives where we have abandoned our sovereignty and how can reclaim it now.

Sovereignty invites readers to reconnect with themselves at every level. These levels form the Table of Contents of self, instinct, mind, emotion, thoughts, relationships and the impact of body on mind. The structure leads readers into accessing their whole brain, showing up with their full potential, and becoming their true selves. Each chapter describes our state of bondage, how we turn that bondage into sovereignty, and finishes with practical take-away exercises to put that into practice immediately.

Written in a highly practical way with stories, science, research and case studies that myself or my colleagues have conducted, each chapter ends with exercises and takeaways (including a QR code for direct link to online or app-based instruction). The last chapter provides additional takeaways and tips as to how to turn Sovereignty into a lifestyle and presents an accessible and 7-week challenge including further online tools, support and community.” – Emma Seppälä.

PRESS & QUOTES

Emma is an ace researcher and highly skilled communicator. This book will be massively useful for anybody who’s looking to do life better. I know I will read it, and help promote it.

Both Things Are True Notes on Living in the Courageous Middle

On July 1,2019, I was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic colon cancer. I was 48. I had no family history, and no classic symptoms. Just a horrible diagnosis, with even more horrible odds for long-term survival.

I was also a single mom to a 16- and 14-year-old.

Six years earlier, I discovered that my husband –who I loved dearly– was in the midst of a three-year affair. After a valiant attempt to repair what had been broken, our marriage ended months later.

Having lived through divorce, and now living through cancer, I can say with confidence that divorce is far harder. Here’s why: with betrayal, your past (or your story) is taken from you; with cancer, your future is taken. The past is what is uniquely yours. It’s the most sacred place of all because it’s the narrative arc that helps you frame who you are today, and who you hope to become. Your future is a grand mystery. It’s thrilling –yes – but it holds no memory. Which is to say, it’s not yours. Yet.

Amy Low

Amy Low has been a storyteller all her life. She grew up in and continues to live life through parables and metaphors. She sees her life as an invitation to discovering the new every day and even records some of these discoveries in her Substack, Postcards from the Mountain, whose readers include a great deal of journalists. Amy is in nearly constant conversation with some of the most remarkable storytellers and change makers of our time as a managing director at Emerson Collective. Her proudest achievement is raising a son and daughter who one day will be spectacular and forever curious dinner party guests.

Rather than viewing the terrible as some kind of lapse of divine providence, the story I am telling is an invitation to explore both triumph and tragedy as necessary and sacred components in all of our paths. And instead of viewing joy and sorrow as opposites, I will explore how both are part of a holy harmony, full of mystery and surprise. And through rich storytelling, I’ll draw readers closer to discernment –a heart to spot and marvel at miracles, a lightness to spot the utter absurdity and humor woven throughout, and a more expansive imagination to pause and extend empathy for others when tragedy strikes. Most of all –a heart to see our stories perhaps from a more sacred place–capacious, and without fear. Instead of seeing our days as succeeding or failing, rather than seeing our physical selves as healthy or unwell, I will move readers to wrestle with a more fundamental question: who are we becoming as we accumulate achievements, and also afflictions?

PRESS & QUOTES

This book is an invitation to reside in the brave in between—the courageous middle—in a way that’s equipped by the stories we gather from our very best and very worst days. It explores the possibilities of this courageous middle of our own lives, and the broader courageous middle space in our culture –a space where moral courage, forgiveness, and resetting with grace are becoming far too rare… This is a space where dualities might find a way to dance.

Endemic A Post-Pandemic Playbook

This book aims to become THE playbook for all future pandemics with its 10-point plan. It focuses directly on reckoning with our present condition: comprehending and living with a new respiratory disease and how to face the coming variants and next pandemic with reason, science, understanding, courage, and compassion. It does not shy from rigorous scrutiny, and it pulls no punches about where we have been, where we find ourselves now, and how we ought to manage the virus in the coming years.

Chapter overview:

Part I: What the Past Teaches Us About the Future

Chapter 1. Ward 86 – HIV as Prophet and Teacher

Chapter 2. COVID-19 and Pandemics Made Simple

Chapter 3. Living with the Virus: Declaring Endemicity Requires Immunity and Good Treatments

Part II: The Pandemic Playbook

Chapter 4. The 10-Point Plan for the Future of COVID and the Next Pandemic

Chapter 5. Resources before Restrictions and the Moral Imperative of Helping the Vulnerable

Monica Gandhi

Dr. Gandhi is an infectious-diseases trained physician who currently serves as the Medical Director of the HIV Clinic, San Francisco Gen. Hospital (Ward 86); Director of the NIH-funded Univ. of California SF Center for AIDS Research; and Professor of Medicine in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at UCSF.

Dr. Gandhi has received dozens of awards, spoken at hundreds of conferences keynoting many, held a handful of prestigious leadership positions, and performed thousands of hours of public service.

Chapter 6. Risk Stratification: How Epidemiology was Hijacked during COVID

Chapter 7. School Closures and COVID-19

Chapter 8. Debate and Dialogue

Chapter 9. Duty, Sacrifice, Objectivity in Public Health, and Humanity

Chapter 10. A Pandemic Knows No Borders: The Importance of Global Equity in Vaccines and Treatments.

PRESS & QUOTES

Endemic came across my desk at exactly the right moment, carrying a message of hope, reason, and positivity that is sorely needed in these times of increased misinformation and fearmongering. Dr. Gandhi’s manifesto is based in science and research, gleaned from her many years on the frontlines of infectious diseases and epidemiology, and points us toward practical steps we can take for future pandemics.

Tom Peters is coauthor of In Search of Excellence—the book that changed the way the world does business and is often tagged as the best business book ever. Nineteen books and forty years later, he’s still at the forefront of the “management guru industry.” What’s new? A lot. As CNN said, “While most business gurus milk the same mantra for all its worth, the one-man brand called Tom Peters is still reinventing himself.” His message is as relevant today as ever. In November 2017, Tom received the Thinkers50 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tom Peters’ Compact Guide to Excellence

Tom Peters’ Compact Guide to Excellence is full of inspiration for anyone aged 20 to 80, from cashiers to CEOs. This strikingly designed little book argues that business leaders must put people first and help them prepare for a rocky future. As we come to terms with the debilitating pandemic, confront wealth inequality, and wrestle with destabilizing technological revolutions, it’s clear that “Extreme Humanism”—treating one another humanely—is the best path forward that can engender purpose and pride in all of us who perform the work.

Assemblage

The art and science of brand transformation

Brands can no longer force-feed us a plethora of products we don’t need. To succeed, brands must transform us and the world we live in.

Assemblage guides you through the art and science of creating transformative brands by combining personal, social, and cultural components.

Assemblage will show you:

Why perception is the truth and how to shape people’s perceptions

• Why we relate to antiheroes, villains, and saviors

• How brands can reassure consumers about their past, present, and future

• How to leverage data and insights to deliver a personalized, human-centric consumer experience

How brands can make a positive impact on people, society, and the economy

Emmanuel Probst

Emmanuel Probst is Global Lead, Brand Thought-Leadership at Ipsos, adjunct professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, and the author of Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestseller Brand Hacks

At Ipsos, Emmanuel supports numerous Fortune 500 companies by providing them with a full understanding of their customer’s journey. His clients span across a wide range of industries, including consumer packaged goods, retail, financial services, advertising agencies and media outlets.

Assemblage is supported by in-depth research in consumer psychology, extensive consumer insights, interviews with industry-leading marketers, and case studies of transformative brands, big and small.

PRESS & QUOTES

Assemblage blends academic research with practical insights that marketers can immediately put to good use. It’s a clear, concise, and actionable book.

Assemblage is the book I have been waiting for. Its standpoint on the marketing industry is disruptive. Its learnings are pragmatic.

As Jeremy Bullmore famously said, ‘People build brands the way birds build nests—from the scraps and straws they find lying around.’ Using the model of assemblage, the art of blending fine cognacs, Emmanuel Probst provides us with a much more helpful and versatile mental model for the way brands are built in practice. It is also an approach which rings true with what we are increasingly learning about human perception and behavior.

Ryan A Bush is the founder of Designing the Mind LLC and author of Designing the Mind: The Principles of Psychitecture. Ryan’s background is in the design of systems – he works with tech startups to design and develop everything from patented physical products, to software, to buildings, to business models.

Designing the Mind

The Principles of Psychitecture

The Instant Cult Classic on the Art of Reprogramming Your Own Psychological Software

A bold and fascinating dive into the nuts and bolts of psychological evolution, Designing the Mind is part philosophical manifesto, part practical self-development guide, all based on the teachings of legendary thinkers like Marcus Aurelius, Lao Tzu, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Abraham Maslow. The ideas and techniques it offers are all integrated into a vital theory for helping individuals scale the heights of self-mastery and lead great lives.

This visionary guide argues that the mind can be compared to software, made up of many interwoven algorithms which were originally programmed by natural selection. Though most never learn to alter their default programming, it is possible to rewire cognitive biases, change ingrained habits, and transform emotional reactions. The process of psychitecture enables you to unplug from your own mind, identify its underlying patterns, and become the architect of your own enlightenment.

Simultaneously ancient and futuristic, Designing the Mind defies categorization, masterfully linking mindfulness to transhumanism, evolutionary psychology to Stoicism, and neuroscience to Buddhism. It frames the ideas of ancient sages as open-source code for the mind, putting forth a new, rational vision of spiritual enlightenment centered around gradual self-optimization.

This book will teach you to cultivate deep introspective insight. It will show you how to effortlessly change your automatic behaviors and manipulate your own desires so you always get what you want. It will provide a toolkit for building perpetual peace into your operating system. If you have ever longed for an operating manual for your own mind, this book will serve as a crucial guide for turning your own mind into a palace.

PRESS & QUOTES

Brilliantly interweaves philosophical concepts with the discipline of psychology in an approachable, thought-provoking way.

Hell Yeah or No What’s Worth doing

Derek Sivers shared this simple idea a few years ago: If you are feeling anything less than “hell yeah!” about something, you should say no. You are overwhelmed because of all the times you’ve said a half-hearted yes.

By saying no to almost everything, you leave space and time in your life to throw yourself completely into the few things that matter most. Instead of expanding a single small idea into a book (as too many non-fiction authors do), Sivers compiled sixty-six related ideas around the themes of what’s worth doing, fixing faulty thinking, and making things happen.

PRESS & QUOTES

A deceivingly small book packed with endless wisdom. Each chapter is a life lesson. These stories help me keep the most useful mental models fully usable every day.

How to Live

27 Conflicting Answers and One Weird Conclusion

Many books have conflicting answers to the question of how to live. But in How to Live, by Derek Sivers, each chapter believes it has the answer, which deliberately conflicts with the rest. Each chapter convinces you that its answer is right, and others are wrong. Then each successive chapter does the same. It’s a masterpiece of pop philosophy — either the best self-help book ever, or a take-down of the whole genre, or both. No philosophers are quoted. No -isms are named. Only the core ideas. The end result is more poetry than prose. A very unique and special book.

PRESS & QUOTES

One thing How To Live doesn’t do is tell you how to live. Yet, after reading it, you might be closer to answering that question for yourself. Half self-help and half art, it beautifully transcends its genre. Seriously one of my favorite books.

Anything You Want 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur (3rd ed.)

Derek Sivers was just a musician who built an online store from scratch to sell his music online. But wordof-mouth led to other musicians asking him to sell their music too. Eventually his company became the largest seller of independent music online with over 150,000 musicians and $100M in sales. After ten years, he sold the company for $22 million and gave all the money to charity.

The book’s most memorable stories are from his horrible mistakes, such as how he lost $3.3 million dollars with one quick mistake, and was attacked by Steve Jobs. Its counter-intuitive humanist approach to business, focusing on generosity and happiness more than profits, has helped thousands of entrepreneurs re-focus.

Your Music and People Creative and Considerate Fame

Derek Sivers was a professional musician for ten years before he accidently started a music distribution company that helped 150,000 musicians sell their music to over four million people. So after ten years of living the problems, he had ten more years of witnessing the solutions. Your Music and People distills Sivers’ advice and philosophy into a short book you can read in two hours. Though it uses music as the example, it is meant to be read metaphorically by any creator trying to reach people. Early readers called it one of the best books ever written on business marketing.

Susan Sands

An author of unforgettable women’s fiction, Susan Sands grew up in a real-life Footloose town in Louisiana, complete with her senior class hosting the first ever prom in the history of their tiny public school, with half the town chaperoning. Is it any wonder that when she decided to be an author, she penned small-town stories, with a heaping spoonful of romance? New York Times Bestselling Author Kristan Higgins was quoted, describing Susan’s writing: “as sweet and satisfying as homemade pie.” And Award-winning Author Carolyn Brown said Susan dishes up “a big helping of southern charm.” Susan lives in Alpharetta, Georgia where she’s mother to her grown children and, along with her husband, lives among stacks of novels and bucketloads of material for her next book.

The Island of Summer Sunsets

In the small southern village of Fripp, Janie’s life is moving along at about the same slow pace as the island—exactly the way she wants it. After the death of Janie’s husband, unable to find her own way, she spends her days with the seagulls and swallow-tailed kites, in the serene bliss of the Atlantic coast.

Until newcomer Ryan Kennedy and his teenage daughter move into the rental down the street, shaking up Janie’s well-ordered, simple life. Ryan has enough to deal with, being a single dad. All he wants is to move into a brand-new house in this quaint community and start fresh. But, with Janie down the street, that might be easier said than done.

The Holiday Plan

From one of the freshest new voices in clean and wholesome romantic fiction, The Holiday Plan is the perfect escape for fans of Courtney Walsh, Annie Rains, and Debbie Mason.

Native New Yorker and author Verona Scott is battling heartbreak, both personally and professionally. Coming off a disastrous split with her ex, she’s struggling for inspiration to write her next book. And she’s lost without her favorite Aunt Theoni’s wisdom and guidance.

Hoping for a fresh start and to avoid the holiday completely, she’s planned a Valentine’s detox: a luxurious trip alone to the historic Courtington Castle hotel, near the adorably quaint town of Camelot Creek, tucked into a picturesque valley in the Adirondacks.

But escaping the heart-shaped balloons and red roses isn’t as easy as she thought.

This won’t be the restful retreat she’d imagined. Instead, she’s just walked into one of the biggest matchmaking events of the year. Not to mention, the incredibly attractive single dad and dating coach Troy Turner is heading the whole thing up, and he’s on a mission to include Verona in the festivities.

Troy is in the midst of a professional crisis of his own. After a bit of unfounded bad press, the very last thing he needs is a guest to cast doubt in the minds of his attendees.

Will Troy change Verona’s mind about the most romantic day of the year? Just when sparks begin to fly, an unexpected visitor checks into the castle, stirring up the past. No matter what, for Verona, Valentine’s Day is the day when everything changes.

Emma Lynden

When she’s not clicking away at her keyboard, spinning heartwarming stories about family, friendship, and finding true love, you can usually catch Emma soaking up the sunshine (or snowfalls) outdoors, capturing the beauty of everyday life behind her camera lens, or cozily curled up with her first passion –reading – a hot mug of something sweet in one hand and the promise of a happily-ever-after in the other.

Metin Murat

Metin Murat is a British born Cypriot Turk. He grew up in a multicultural environment with deep exposure to English, French and Welsh cultures. He currently lives in South West France with his wife. He received his history and literary education from Aberystwyth University, with an undergraduate degree and later a PhD, via a Master’s degree at Lancaster University; and his business education from the London School of Economics. For much of his adult life Metin worked for a multinational organisation before setting up his own company in 2011. This is his debut novel, realising a dual ambition: to tell the story of his father’s community, the original Turkish community of Cyprus; and to use literature as a means to seek truth and reconciliation.

The Crescent Moon Fox

The Crescent Moon Fox is a compassionate, heart- breaking, brutal, and occasionally, humorous, novel about Cypriot Turks. The reader experiences the lives of the inhabitants of one particular village during the lead-up to Independence from Britain and the tragic aftermath of the post-Colonial era in Cyprus – and in particular, of two of its young men: Zeki and Aydin. Zeki who, shaped and nurtured by the British Colonial system, is destined for great things; and Aydin, a misfit in his community who, in his own complex and disturbing way, achieves greatness and redemption.

The span of the novel is from the nineteen thirties to the first decade of the twenty first century – showing the life of the Cypriot Turks, unique and distinct as a minority, in the lead-up to Independence and to what they become in the modern era. It gives a voice to Cypriot Turks, of all different backgrounds, and particularly to the illiterate rural women of the Colonial Era. The Crescent Moon Fox is also a poignant journey of discovery of one’s true identity…

The Crescent Moon Fox is Metin’s debut novel, realising a dual ambition: to tell the story of his father’s community, the original Turkish community of Cyprus; and to use literature as a path to tolerance and reconciliation. He writes: “This novel is dedicated to all Cypriots, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation, with the hope that reconciliation and common understanding of our respective hurt and suffering may one day come to pass”.

Global issues in global times. We see the futility of internecine strife, and that accepting another’s identity is at the heart of our own humanity.

PRESS & QUOTES

Metin Murat has chosen the trickiest of terrains for setting and characterisation in The Crescent Moon Fox Greek Cypriot – Turkish Cypriot remain unsettled and the politics neuralgic but his story and the people who inhabit it break through all that. I cannot recommend it too highly.

— MATTHEW PARRIS, COLUMNIST WITH THE TIMES AND THE SPECTATOR

A page-turner ode to all the people of Cyprus and their culture.

Murat’s book is a thoughtful and loving assembly of fragments from a vanished world that live on to define our present existence while reminding us of the commonality that marks our rich and varied, sometimes painful, disparate cultural roots.

I found this novel quite a page-turner; it never loses itself in “issues” so as to forget that novels are essentially about people, and the lure of “what happens next” to the various characters in whom the reader has become interested is strong. So I don’t want to go too much into plot details. But one thing I really like is the novel’s refusal to provide glib solutions to the problems it raises. People become personally close to individuals of the other community, yet this does not change their attitude to “the other” in general, nor prevent them from participating in atrocities against them.

Andrea Busfield

Andrea Busfield is a former News of the World reporter who moved to Kabul some years before the paper shut down. It was a life-changing experience in many ways and when she returned to Europe, she brought with her a street dog called Blister. Fifteen years later, Blister lives with Andrea in Cyprus – along with five more rescues. As well as having her own pack of strays, and a number of feral cats, Andrea has found homes for nine other dogs that wandered into her path over the years. While she considers her dogs to be ‘part of the family’, her great passion in life is horses. In between writing, Andrea now spends her time working out how to feed them all. Andrea has written three novels: Born Under a Million Shadows; Aphrodite’s War; and The Silence of Stone. She also continues to work as a freelance journalist..

Untethered

Cara, Lillian and Emilia are three women of a certain age who have only one thing in common – a love of animals. Sadly, on the Mediterranean island they call home, they witness appalling animal cruelty and after learning of a puppy’s death in a cardboard crushing machine, the three friends decide to do something about it. They then find themselves responsible for one of the most in- triguing, and in some quarters celebrated, crime sprees in modern Cypriot history.

Untethered is more than a tale about animal rescue, it’s a story of love, loss and the incredible power of female friendship.

PRESS & QUOTES

A macabre, sad but surprisingly funny tale about the power of friendship.

— THE SUN

A deeply moving novel bursting with heart and hope. Untethered is a humorous, fast-paced and ultimately life-affirming novel. A Mediterranean Thelma and Louise (with an extra woman and more dogs), this is a deeply moving novel bursting with heart and hope.

Busfield has a gift for lively, witty dialogue, plot development, and characterization While the subject of animal cruelty might be distressing, Busfield has a light, witty touch and this novel is ultimately uplifting.

— SUNDAY MAIL

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and sympathise with the need to care more for all animals.

Busfield writes with rage and wit. The dialogue crackles. The characters live and breathe. … A painful yet salutary and satisfying read.

First impressions on walking through the doors are our high palm trees gently swaying in the air-conditioning’s draft. This is followed by the hard to ignore multi-storey bookchest. Instantly clear is the open, spacious, character of the building. Sales, marketing and PR dominating the middle ground, flanked by the imprints on all sides. We have an opendoor policy in an office – fittingly - without doors.

In spite of working from a distance during COVID, this has symbolically remained our set up: a strong central organization serving the finer, specialist imprints. Every book is made by editing teams each with its own specialisation. This is how the imprints can properly embrace their authors, giving their books all the attention they deserve. Meanwhile, these imprints don’t need to operate as independent islands.

What [else] do we stand for at Overamstel? We like to innovate. eBooks and audiobooks have become commonplace; we were the early adopters of these new publishing practices. In the field of pr, sales, marketing and rights we deliver tailor made creative solutions.

Our editors look after authors across the whole spectrum, from debutants to household names! We’re constantly on the lookout for new voices, investing time and resources in fresh talent.

With major clout and an eye for detail, that’s how we get to work.

Back to Insulinde

A poignant novel about family, loyalty, love, and hope in times of war.

In 1925 on Java, Rosa is born into a family that has lived in the Dutch East Indies for decades. As a child of the tropics, she is accustomed to the privileges of colonial life and lives like a princess with servants on the one hand while also going on adventures in the jungle. But then her mother abandons her because of an imagined disease, and her parents separate. Left with her aunt, the director of a school for indigenous girls, she feels displaced and all alone. Then, when she is torn from the Dutch Indies she loves as well and has to go to the Netherlands, there is only one thing she wants: to go back to her home country, where she spent her happiest years as a child.

She returns to the colony eventually and finds that the country of her youth no longer exists. When the Netherlands declare war on Japan, sixteen-year-old Rosa is still under the delusion that they will easily win this war. Everyone is dumbfounded when Korean and Japanese soldiers besiege their villa district. It spells the beginning of years of internment, from camp to camp, in which Rosa grows up quickly and has to look after her mother and sisters. She gradually realises that there is no ‘right’ side in this war and that only a sense of shared humanity determines who has value and which battles must be fought.

A penetrating novel about wandering between two worlds.

Louisa wanders through life, having never learned how to be a child or a mother. She was betrothed as a foster child at the age of thirteen and yearns to know who her biological parents are. Louisa can count herself lucky because she is recognised as Eurasian and belongs with the superior white rulers of the Dutch East Indies. Her friendship with a woman of Chinese descent and her Javanese secretary, two outsiders the European community looks down on, opens new doors. She nonetheless decides to go looking for her mother to discover who she really is: a Western angel or an Eastern kinnari. finds an answer to this question and feels she knows where she belongs at last.

The Wisdom of The Witch

Personal lessons from twenty years of practicing the ancient nature religion.

Witchcraft is, like any other nature religion, unorganized. There are no holy books, buildings or prophets, no strict set of rules. Many people therefore prefer to call it a spiritual path. Susan Smit, who has been walking the path of the witch for more than twenty years, shares everything she has learned on her journey of personal development in this book. She tells you what she knows about the laws of nature and the philosophy of life according to the old religion and she presents you with the means to grow.

Susan demonstrates in what ways the old nature religion can help you in the here and now to deal with emotions, to maintain and cleanse your life energy, to understand the connection between your body and sexuality, to utilize creativity, intuition and the power of creation, and to care for the earth and each other. In short, witchcraft teaches us just how much nature and feminine values have to offer us.

PRESS & QUOTES

In a personal way, Susan Smit describes how witchcraft is rooted in ancient and universal wisdom; a must for everyone who wants to stand strong from within.

Susan Smit

Susan Smit (b. 1974) is a writer and columnist. She made her debut in 2001 with Witch (Heks). To date she has nineteen successful novels to her name, including the bestsellers Flood (Vloed), Gisèle, and Bride of the Tropics (Tropenbruid). She spent some time studying the history of witchcraft, which Smit considers to be a spiritual practice and an ancient nature religion.

The Last Witch Hunt

In July 1674, soldiers raid the home of 74-year-old Entgen Luijten. She is taken to the castle in Limbricht, a town in the southernmost part of the Netherlands, and locked in a dungeon where she is told that, based on a number of incidents, she is being accused of witchcraft or black magic. Smit portrays Entgen as an emblem of female indomitability. During the cross-examinations, Entgen doesn’t mention the names of any other women, because she knows all too well what would happen to them. Despite being locked in a cold, dark prison cell and being starved and tortured, she doesn’t yield. In a society where women are considered the ‘weaker sex’ by the church and the authorities, susceptible to Satan’s temptations, Entgen stands out as wholly individual, a wise and autonomous human being.
