NEWS Gold Coast Festival U2 Cancel Glastonbury Appearance
It was seen as a bit of a coup for Glasto organiser Michael Eavis, securing the world famous Irish rockers U2 as their first headliners of 2010. But now, after battling with a back problem Bono has finally conceded defeat and revealed the group will not be taking to the Pyramid stage this month. And from one inflated ego to another, Damon Albarn’s animated band Gorillaz have been tipped as the replacement act. Bono called Michael Eavis last week to let him know the bad news (or good, if you’re in the hate Bono camp). “It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed.,” said Eavis. “Clearly, they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them.” Bono added: “I’m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special - we even wrote a song especially for the Festival.”

The full line-up for next month’s Relentless NASS festival has now been announced and it’s looking pretty good. American jokers Bowling for Soup will be joined by Chase and Status, the ever popular Plan B and Hadouken! Beachbreak Live
One of the lesser known festivals in Wales looks set to be one of the highlights of the year, judging by the impeccable line up. Beachbreak live, which takes place in Pembrey Country Park, South Wales on 14-18 June has secured some epic headliners including the awesome 2ManyDJs, the chart topping Calvin Harris and indie favourites Vampire Weekend. Other acts include The Futureheads, New Young Pony Club and the massively underated Band of Skulls. This award winning student festival is sure to become a staple in the festival calendar and is well worth a punt. Tucked away on the north coast of Devon, miles of golden beaches are the perfect setting for the Gold Coast Oceanfest taking place on 18 – 20 June at Croyde, North Devon. GIG IN A LIBRARY Libraries are serene places of silence right? You’ll get told off if you’re chatting too loudly, or Godforbid listening to music on your iPod. You may be bemused to hear then, that Cheltenham Library is swapping silence for sound as up and coming Ska-Punk bands (that’s right, I said Ska Punk) plays a gig among the books at 7.30pm on 11 June. However, this won’t be the rip-roaring set which Imperial Leather usually play but an intimate acoustic set before their plugged in gig at the Boogie Lounge. The aim is to encourage sustainable live music to flourish in the town and it is hoped this will be the first of many similar gigs. It was part-funded by Arts Development at Cheltenham Borough Council and Cheltenham Library (Gloucestershire County Council). Stefan Edwards said: “Staging a gig in a library is an unusual thing but it should be a great experience for the people lucky enough to get a ticket.” BACK WITH TO BLACK After a turbulent couple of years The Black Swan in Bristol looks like its getting back on track with a late night DJ gig. The Eastville pub had its late licence revoked but it has managed to get it back again and is making the most of it with a mega re-opening party. The night, organized by promoters Tiki, takes place on 18 June and will see DJs and acts taking to the decks in the main room, upstairs and in the corridor. Black to the Swan kicks off at 10pm and goes on until 6am. Tickets cost £5 and are available from Bristol Ticket Shop. IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY… Following the success of last year’s Forestry Commission gigs at Westonbirt Aboretum, nr Bristol, organisers have upped the stakes to pull in even more big acts than last year. NEWS Royal International Air Tattoo If you thought tattoos were just ink sketches on your body then think again, for this air tattoo will see some of the most impressive aircraft displays in the world. Dubbed ‘the world’s greatest airshow’, the Royal International Air Tattoo takes place on 17-18 July at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. See the worlds most advanced high tech aircraft take to the skies including a Raptor stealth jet fighter and the RAF’s legendary Red Arrows aerobatic team, in a breathtaking seven-and-a-half hour hi-octane fuelled flying display. Special tributes marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain will be among the air show highlights including displays from legendary fighters such as the Spitfire and Hurricane. On The Beach
It’s that time of year again when Weston-super-Mare goes crazy. So it may no longer have it’s Grand Pier and the beach is nowhere near as nice as any of the Mediterranean shores we may occasionally escape to but that makes this one-day sold out event even more spectacular. The T4 crew, including now veteran T4 presenter Miquita Oliver and the gorgeous Alexa Chung, will take it in turns to introduce a whole heap of music, including Plan B (who is clearly putting it about a bit this festival season), Pixie Lott, JLS, Dizzee Rascal and Scouting for Girls as well as Basshunter, The Saturdays, Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah and this year’s marmite act Diana Vickers (you either love her or hate her). The cast of Skins will undoubtedly be in attendance along with the unmistakable Gok Wan.
Upfest
Europe’s biggest urban and street art festival Upfest takes place in Bristol on 5-6 June. As in previous years, the festival will be centred on live painting at the Tobacco Factory with over 200 urban artists and illustrators and 50 artists from around the world doing live art. There will also be a Very Affordable Art Sale and dedicated print room, where original artwork and prints by the artists painting at the festival will be available for sale at bargain prices. Throughout the weekend, DJs, beatboxers, hip hop groups and MCs will take to two stages at the Tobacco Factory. Upfest has already raised over £10,000 for Nacoa (National Association for Children of Alcoholics) and is hoping to boost this total this year.
Hobbs Returns To Bristol
Bristol’s biggest fashion, style and cultural event is back for 2010. The Hobbs ‘Born & Raised in Bristol’ show takes place on 19 June 2010, when the city’s leading fashion, style and music talents will take to the catwalk at Colston Hall with all the proceeds going to Meningitis UK. Styled by the Hobbs hairdressing team, a range of models will work the catwalk with the latest fashion from fashion names such as Karen Millen, and leading Bristol and South West designers such as corset specialist Gilly Woo, vintage favourites La Freak Boutique and leading independent menswear store LUKE, with optician Brian Vousden adding an extra element to the show’s look with a selection of trendy eyewear. Bristol artists, Beth Rowley and Jay Wilcox will provide the music at the event and after show party, supported by dance groups The Floor Technicians and Movement Collective. NEWS Escape Into The Park
Dance fans in their thousands will head to Escape in the Park in Swansea on 12 June for the biggest dance festival in Wales. The mesmerising Beardyman and the talented Scratch perverts will join some big name DJs, such as Judge Jules, Steve Angello, Darren Styles and Lisa Lashes as well as a whole host of up and coming talent. This one isn’t for the faint hearted, gates at Singleton park open at midday with the party carrying on until the early hours. Ever been paintballing? Well this is like paintball clubbing. The Syndicate in Bristol will play host to this unique Smirnoff Paintfest on 8 June. For more info or to book tickets please visit www.forestry.gov.uk TEENAGE CANCER TRUST GIG IN BRISTOL Fresh from the amazingly successful Teenage Cancer Trust gigs at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year (by that I mean the Suede reunion and a Noel Gallagher solo gig), the charity has teamed up with Topshop to put on more fundraising gigs across the country, including here in Bristol. Subject to licence, there will be a mini festival at the Castle Park bandstand on 13 June – possibly the smallest gig space in the whole city. Nevertheless, they have secured the likes of Charlotte Hatherley, Chew Lips, Slow Club and Goldheart Assembly. There will also be DJs spinning some summer tunes. The music, however, is only part of the equation, with the surrounding locale transformed into a classic, pincnic style playground, complete with Native Faces providing festival face decoration with Topshop Make Up, Sk8 House roller skate hire, and sports day games such as wang a welly, egg and spoon, and sack races with special prizes up for grabs. Tickets are £10 and are limited to 500. All proceeds go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Created back at the turn of the new millenium, South Wales based hard style promoters, Bionic have a real driving force throughout clubland in the region. With varied guests at every event and a reputation for going the extra mile with the production of their events, we sat sown down with founder Cally as he returned from the USA for a chat about all things Bionic. Quick history lesson for the uneducated – who are the people behind Bionic and what do they do? Bionic is owned by myself, Cally (of Cally & Juice) and Brian M (of Brian M vs. McBunn). Working closely with us we then have Gavin Davies, better known as Sat-Nav-Gav who we couldn’t be without...especially when Bri’s slacking! ;) Then there’s also McBunn who looks after all our promotion, and finally Dai Cochran who also does a bit of promotion for us and also lends a hand setting up each event.

Not many nights reach their 10th birthday, what makes a Bionic party so special? I wouldn’t say it’s one thing in particular. It’s like having a recipe for an amazing meal. If all the ingredients aren’t there it just isn’t the same. A lot of time and effort is spent on every aspect of the night, from the marketing of the event (i.e. the flyer design), the line-ups How did Bionic start? ...one event we can very easily go beyond our budget, but we always want people to leave our events feeling they’ve had their money’s worth and then some. Unlike other hard style promoters, you book new European talent to headline your nights –how has this worked for you? It’s something we’ve done since our early days. Ever since I can remember my DJ sets have always been heavily influenced by European music, and so adding this element to our events was something we did without thinking. The one thing we didn’t want to do was put on a night booking the same DJs that everyone else was booking. There were a lot of events on when we started and we wanted to give people a reason to come to Bionic, to experience something different, and that included the music. Tell us your highlights from the past ten years of Bionic and why they stand out: Best night/event? It’s almost impossible to pick one event, though the birthday events have always been among the best nights we’ve had, no matter what venue we’ve been in. We always overspend and whether we bring in entertainers performing fire-breathing, or have very special stage shows planned (some that have even got us in trouble in the past, lol!), you can guarantee there are surprises in store each birthday event.

so many other things. Admittedly it has been very tough for us, but our supporters are extremely loyal, and despite numbers generally being down across the country we’re still managing to keep close to 1,000 people per event. The Bionic brand seems to be spreading across the UK with arenas hosted at most of the UK’s biggest hard style events such as Westfest, Sanctuary Outdoors, HTID, Hardcore Heaven weekender and Escape into the Park – how have you managed to achieve this? I think that many of the scene’s top promoters can see for themselves that we’ve created something very special and exciting, and that we’re not just another event booking DJs. They know that we’re very proud of the brand we’ve created, and wouldn’t involve ourselves in any event that we wouldn’t put a lot of hard work into. If we’re running an arena for anyone we’ll always tailor make the line-up for their event, we’ll supply and install our own decor and we’ll make sure it doesn’t clash with anything we’re doing to make sure we pull all our loyal followers. You celebrate your 10th birthday in early July – what can clubbers expect at this event? Our birthday event is always one of our busiest events every year. The atmosphere is almost untouchable in clubland thanks to us having the most dedicated and insane crowd alive. If there’s one event to attend this year, then this is it! What are you most looking forward to in 2010? Hardstyle finally moving away from the awful dark and heavy sounds that were killing it, and back to being melodic and uplifting, and finally a reduction in BPM’s. It’s about time. Hopefully we’ll see this move attracting more people to the genre.
What are your future plans for Bionic? Since winning ‘Best Event’ at the Hard Dance Awards this year, we’ve been trying to push forward with many different ideas and projects. We’ve recently launched our label Bionic Digital, and have Best guest? From a stature point of view it would probably lots of exciting releases forthcoming from some big names we be Paul van Dyk. Ty is an UK based international Hip Hop artist who is best known and loved for his lyrical honesty, ability to conjure emotion-fuelled poetry out of every day realities, his dynamic live shows and eclectic sense of musicality, which never really did fit comfortably in to a musical box. Some may have thought him unwise not to jump on various bandwagons, but maintaining his independence and artistic integrity has allowed Ty the space to make consistent and uncompromised classic albums for the past decade. His new album, Special Kind of Fool is a cheeky hint that the wisest course is to be yourself and follow your passions in life, no matter what others might say about you. We caught up with him to chat about this new album and performing in the Southwest. Words: Dave Spenceley

Tell us about your new album This is my fourth album, I had to go through something special to be enthusiastic about making music again for this album, as I’d been diagnosed with diabetes a while ago and that thing can really throw you off track, mentally. I’ve really enjoyed the process of this album, it was basically built out of going through a set of emotions and feelings and being positive about music.
What are your memories of performing in Southwest? Ah, the Southwest I have loads of How would you describe your style of music? memories! I remember first coming down I would describe my style of hip hop as hip hop to play Cornwall with Keith Lawrence and music, but different in the terms that I don’t just the show was crazy, full of vibes. Bustin’ Out 1982: New Wave to New Beat Vol 2 (Year Zero)
Early developments in electronic music, proving that there was more to the ‘80s than crap haircuts and loathsome Duran Duran videos. There’s serious digital punk from Front 242 and Die Krupps, Man Parrish deliver an early electro blueprint, Mark Stewart gets experimental and there’s Gary Numan’s fretless bass stomp of Music For Chameleons. Highlight: Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force’s timeless electro-hip-hop classic, Planet Rock. Today’s music constantly relies on ideas from the past, so despite cheesy drum machines, Bustin’ Out is an educational listen. Arash Torabi

Over the last two decades, Heavenly Recordings has launched the careers of some of this country’s most innovative artists. Some have sold well (Manic Street Preachers & Magic Numbers) while others have been cruelly denied the limelight (The Rockingbirds and The Loose Salute) The Doves, however, haven’t done too bad. They’ve achieved commercial success by maintaining their own quirky creative process: psychedelic, cinematic and heavy on the melody. TVPs man Daniel Treacy is the UK’s best-kept secret. Although he’s had tribute albums recorded in his honour, his rough & ready approach has kept him a cult hero. Television Personalities are amongst the most influential bands of our time, and without having to rely too much on past glories, this album stands up on its own. Despite some experimental numbers, he can still deliver the heart-wrenching songs that we love him for. The Girl in the Hand Me Down Clothes and She’s My Yoko could easily belong on earlier albums such as The Painted Word. Arash Torabi

Jeye Severe The Hierarchy (Lish Media)
Just when I thought I’d grown too old and cynical to get excited about a rapper, let alone a UK rapper, along comes Jeye Severe to make me step back and kiss myself. I’ve not eagerly anticipated a debut release since the glory days of Rawkus with Mos Def, Talib and Mr Monch. This guy’s album is gonna be so so dope. I first heard him on a Ras Kwame show and immediately made me pay more attention. On this, his first mixtape, he has quality producers, no big names but they lay a decent foundation for Mr Severe to do what he does, in fact this guy could recite the phone book and I’m sure I’d be hooked by his flow. UK hip hop of the highest order. If you have never bought something on my recommendation alone then this is the time, in his words he’s “here to save the game like a memory card”. Virus Syndicate The Breakout Trilogy (Virus Syndicate records)
These guys have been mentioned on more than one occasion in these hallowed pages. It seems that the pages of time have turned in their favour and now is their moment. Where the music industry is right now it appears that every bright shining light from the grime scene has seen the crossover production as the direction to take, even Roll Deep have a record Dj Sammy would be proud of for god’s sake. So it’s good to hear a grime / UK hip hop crew who still have that raw edge and sound that retains the energy of grime without thinking they need to compete with radio one playlists. If you like raw UK flows and productions with head nods towards dubstep production and a very non pop approach this album is for you. Aldo Vanucci

With the spirit of 16 Horsepower and Gallon Drunk coursing through their veins, Southern French trio, Clan Edison, unleash an album of dark portent and slashing blues-punk designed to gleefully unnerve. Drawing from a deep well of misanthrope rock, ‘Eternity’ pulsates with a sinister swagger that Nick Cave would be proud of, while ‘Orvietan’ pushes their bourbon-soaked conquest into angrier territory. Back with a vengeance! And in an age of ten-a-penny Britpunk bands with tattoo sponsorships, Guy McKnight and co could be more relevant than ever. Things really begin to thrill with the paranoiac throb of ‘Mission From God’, and by the time you’re reeling from the suckerpunch that is ‘Man For All Seasons’, the Brighton gothaholics have hijacked your arteries and rerouted your blood cells straight to their bleak heart. Fuck Gallows et al, this is what punk rock sounds like when it isn’t seeking kudos from Kerrang. Backbone
Seth Lakeman Hearts And Minds (Relentless)
It’s all a bit local television newsdesk chez Lakeman these days. Sentimental songs about soldiers (‘Spinning Days’), bankers (the title track and new single) and toilers (‘Hard Working Man’) rub shoulders with easily digestible, fiddlesome stomps and Seth’s windswept warble to create an album that mirrors our times but refuses to get righteous on our ass. Of course, it’ll be lapped up by ardent fans who like nothing more than an unchallenging album that loyally adheres to the neo-folk formula. Backbone
The Gaslight Anthem American Slang
(Side One Dummy) How the hell is ‘American Slang’ a dramatic leap? On what criteria is this statement based? No, this is just The Gaslight Anthem doing what they do best: stealing Springsteen’s plaintive back catalogue and reframing it in simple modern rock language with a little bit of punk soul brotherliness to appease the old fans. Predictably, Brian Fallon laments the passing of time, nostalgia pouring from every snare snap and howled refrain, but nothing here holds a candle to ‘The ’59 Sound’. Underwhelming. Backbone

Global superstar DJ and producer, Tiesto needs no introduction - he is on top of his game, having spent 12yrs carefully crafting his sound and career with shows like opening the Olympics amongst other things. Two CD s of dancefloor classics and floorfillers from the past ten years, if you’re a trance fan, then this compilation is full of memories direct from clubland. NME
DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH Teignmouth indie-rockers, THE QUAILS, have clearly set their sights on the big time. Recorded at Sawmills Studios, their debut album, ‘Master Of Imperfection’, knows when to rock (‘Fever’, the title track) knows when to take stock (‘Argentina’) but never quite knows how to grab the listener by the proverbial cock and lead them giddily to the gates of Valhalla (although the bridge in ‘I Know Myself’ comes close). They’re awesome musicians – check the Queen tribute during ‘For The Good Times‘ – and Dan Steer is a very fine songwriter with a voice to match, but they’ve yet to stumble upon greatness. If they maintain this standard and keep the faith it could be pretty soon. (Released through Like The Sound Records - www.thequails.co.uk) TRANSGRESSION are a Plymouth five piece force to be reckoned with mixing classic thrash riffage with a more progressive angry sound of modern times where they wouldnt be out of place in a line up that included Sylosis,August Burns Red and Metallica. For a band that haven’t been going more than a year they have a sound and feel of an act that a comfortable with each other talents and have been since day one. Be sure to catch there live shows this summe for more info on them and to watch there video visit www.myspace.com/ transgressionuk Mike James The new release from the laudable onec label is a two disc, experimental poetry package from MARK GREENWOOD, a man whose streaming prose, delivered in an unforgiving North East accent, is as perpetually perplexing as it is pleasing. ‘White Mice, All Colours’ features 19 pieces of cryptic, absurdist and esoteric concoctions recited slowly, fragmented, with resignation or under duress; set to an array of analogue drones and tones. Exploring the darker sides of identity, chance and otherness, there are snippets of coded insight here that reveal a healthy and brilliantly skewered mind at work, although lines like “200 collated foreskins dangle from the arm” (‘Crouching Down’) take some getting used to. http://greenwood. dysfunction.de Post-rock tubthumper and Elliot Whale Boy mainstay, STEVE STRONG, branches out further into the realms of sonic self-discovery with a solo demo EP, ‘Safety In Numbers’. It’s a deceptively dreamy, chiefly instrumental set of post-rock soundscapes that, for the most part, centres around cyclical melancholic guitar motifs with shuffling drum patterns that dodge and dive throughout the musical passages like a kid with ADHD. Sometimes it works perfectly (the awesome ‘One Hand One Knee One Foot At A Time’); other times you feel like you’re being prodded with little sticks (the frenetic title track, which is nothing if not ambitious). Plymouth grindermen, WILLE & THE BANDITS, are undoubtedly a band with a real passion for their slide blues manoeuvres but on the band’s debut album proper, ‘New Breed’ (released through URM Records), I’m just not feeling it enough. That could have something to do with Wille Edwards’ voice: a gravelly Joe Cocker grumble that tends to edge way too close to parody, especially on ‘Galloping Horses’; while on the likes of ‘Country Girl’, he resorts to a wimpering, Deep South coo that begins to grate after a while. The musicianship is clearly competent and all the songs have moments of authentic blooze-power, but ‘New Breed’ feels like the work of a band who haven’t been put in

Holly Davey: I told you so Chapter, Cardiff, 029 203 11050, www.hollydavey.com, £FREE Cardiff artist Holly Davey has ventured into all of the nooks and crannies in Chapter, the stairwells, offices and roof, using her body to visually mark out a series of frozen tableaux. While the public cannot all gather on the inaccessible roof to watch this for real, Davey has taken a series of photographs of her experiment which are on display at Chapter. The photography exhibition forms part of Davey’s residence at the arts centre.

Most people endure a 24-hour flight to get to Australia but one daring woman, Barbara Haddrill, decided to hop on her bike and cycle all the way to Brisbane for a friend’s wedding. Now she is giving talks on her experience, something which is undoubtedly going to inspire others.

Various, Hay on Wye The tail end of the Guardian’s famous Hay on Wye Festival sees Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg talking to Philippe Sands about constitutional reform and coalition politics. So if you voted Lib Dem and are still bemused as to why they got into bed with the Tories, now’s your chance to ask questions to the Organ Grinder. In other events, Weakest Link lovers can hear the Queen of Mean Anne Robinson talking to Max Hastings and The Undertones’ frontman Feargal Sharkey spouting off about copyright law. It’s such a middle class affair, it would not be complete without comedian Marcus Brigstocke and national trasure Stephen Fry, who are also giving talks on the final day of the festival.

It looks at artists who use text to express themselves. We’re not just talking straightforward poetry and prose but text in a visual and sonic form, with a shape and structure of its own. Clare Gasson presents a new work The traveller walking walking walking through ... that explores the connection between the text, the rhythm and the action. Maryam Jafri presents a performance-lecture Death With Friends Is A Feast, a body of visual and textual material that forms the basis for her new film of the same name. Pil and Galia Kollectiv present a radical worship for the apocalypse, featuring a sermon for the Church of the Atom with live music by Gelbart.

VaVoom! The Story of a Showgirl! Chapel Arts, Bath, 01225 461700, www.chapelarts.org, 7.30pm, £12 This hilarious musical comedy follows the story of LiLotta VaVoom, an aspiring showgirl in New Orleans, Lousiana. Set in the 1940zxs on the backdrop of the Second World War and the Great Depression, the tale not only tells of LiLotta’s quest for stardom but also explores political and feminist themes from then and now. The infectiously upbeat, all original score makes the show a whirlwind of sequined costumes, smarmy magicians, vengeful chorus girls and plotting stagehands, sure to make any audience want to sing along. Various, Bath, www.bathfringe.co.uk All the decent creative cities have their own Fringe and while nothing can really compare to Edinburgh, the creative folk of Bath sure do give it a good try. This year’s Fringe Festival comprises a compelling mix of street art, comedy, theatre and fashion shows. There are programmes for children, including a show from The funky Puppet Company and the nofitstate circus and there’s more adult events, including Counted – a take on modern democracy and the funny women awards. If you, like most men, believe that women comedians just aren’t as funny as men then you may want to check this out. The Fringe Festival also plays host to a festival within a festival, in the form of the Bath Banjo Festival. Meanwhile on the theatre front, students from the University of Bath are putting on a production of Juliet and her Romeo and another of The Pillowan. Finally, there’s the usual mix of music including local heroes The Zen Hussies and The Blockheads, just without the late great Ian Dury. Venues include The Little Theatre, Green Park Station, The Bell and Sydney Gardens, and some events are free of charge.

But we know nothing about him. Or do we? Nicholas Cage plays Terence, a detective trying to bring down a drug lord who slaughtered a family of immigrants while on a personal downward spiral of addiction (cocaine, painkillers, gambling and sex) and madness. Cage is glorious as the increasingly deranged cop in an intelligent performance that shines with some marvellous hallucinogenic moments involving iguanas and alligators. It’s offbeat, inventive, and refreshingly unpredictable - a reminder of what the crime genre used to excel at.

After dominating British politics for years, Lang has retired with his wife to the USA. Soon, Lang gets embroiled in a major scandal with international ramifications that reveals how far he was ready to go in order to nurture the UK’s “special relationship” with the USA. His ghost-writer is in possession of all the facts, but will he expose the truth or take the money and run? This intelligent thriller from director Roman Polanski will capture the imagination of a public gripped by political intrigue in Britain.

Love for this pair is thwarted by a series of problems involving money worries, social scruples and irrelevant male loyalties. Nominated for the Golden Palm at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Bright Star is unapologetically romantic, and responds to Keats’ life and work with intelligence and grace.
Inferno (15) 13 May: Curzon Community Cinema – Clevedon, 01275 871 000, www.curzon.org.uk Dir: Christopher Morris Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch and Julia Davis 2009/UK/101 min Four Lions tells the story of a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory in death to the breaking point. As the wheels fly off, and their competing ideologies clash, what emerges is an entirely plausible farce. In a storm of razorsharp verbal jousting and large-scale set pieces, Four Lions is a comic tour de force. It shows that while terrorism is about ideology, it can also be about idiocy. Only Chris Morris, the man behind Brasseye and Nathan Barley, could make such a sensitive subject so funny.

Meanwhile, the government are after his suit and he’ll have to fight back Justin Hammer (Rockwell), Black Widow (Johansson) and his affections for Pepper Potts (Paltrow). Still, Colonel Rhodes (Cheadle) looks to help him by donning some armour himself, becoming War Machine. Aside from having the most stupid roster of character names ever, this film should rock. Great special effects and Downey Jnr. playing a role he was born to inhabit could make this the film of the summer.

Thrumming to a fierce narrative beat the story rewinds to the mid-1950s when Lennon was growing up in leafy Menlove Avenue, Liverpool, failing at school but just beginning to discover himself as a delinquent and heart-throb. Brought up by his prim aunt Mimi since the age of 5, the film picks up when he is reunited with his flirtatious, flamboyant mother (an award-winning turn by Anne-Marie Duff), who encourages his interest in music. You’ll feel fine after seeing this touching and funny drama.

This film sees the re-teaming of Gladiator duo director Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, so expect epic medieval battle scenes and not even a whiff of a Bryan Adams theme tune. Could be one of the big hits of the blockbuster season.

Will they wind up in the attic? Will they be chucked out with the rubbish? Through fate and accident they all go to the local daycare, where they are welcomed by the other toys in residence there and just a little terrorized by the toddlers who play with them. There’s also over a dozen new characters, from the imposing pink bear Lotso to the buff Mantis Man and the silent and imposing Big Baby. A sure fire hit that will be enjoyed by children and adults in equal measure.

Teddy’s shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals escape in the confusion and Teddy doesn’t know which way to turn to solve the case. This marks the 4th collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio and going by past results this should be nothing short of stunning.

The hype and buzz surrounding this Rumble in the Jungle & SW D’n’B, Breaks and Dubstep Awards was huge. This was by far the biggest Arts Café event to date, supported by 247 Mag & Smirnoff Creative Grants, and it was rammed to capacity. Multiple arena’s amongst the biomes showcased the best of the west, along with the likes of Chase and Status, Benga, Subfocus and Krafty Kuts who all smashed it big time.
