Falmouth forgot about the World Cup Final in favour of the annual Faltown Skate Jam. For the third year running, Faltown Skateboards teamed up with Falmouth Fire brigade to put on an event for the community showcasing some of the best skaters from around Cornwall. And it wasn’t just boards, this year saw a BMX and scooter comp and graffiti workshop thrown into the mix. The idea behind this years event was to raise money and awareness for the new Falmouth Skatepark project, which is certainly did, attracting quite a crowd to the Falmouth park, who enjoyed some good tunes in the sunshine, as well as the adrenalin fuelled comp, which attracted over 50 competitors across all fields that competed in 15 minute heats to try and make it into the finals which were another 15 minutes long.

The Track Gets Better and Better

Professor Green to headline Falmouth Week
Pop rapper Professor Green is set to headline this year’s Falmouth Week, after storming to success with the Inxs sampling I Need You Tonight, which Zane Lowe dubbed as the Hottest Record in the World in February. The Professor, who’ll play in the middle of Falmouth Week, on Wednesday 11 August, is currently smashing the download chart with his Lily Allen collaboration Just Be Good to Green. Talking about this he says: “Lily and I got chatting on Facebook and I mentioned the track, which turned out to be one of her favourite songs. She asked why I didn’t let her sing the chorus!?,” says Green. “I was like ‘Well, if you want to… ” As well as appearing on the single, Allen has taken Green on tour with her around the UK, Europe and Australia, bringing him onstage to perform the track. The 10 day festival, held at Falmouth’s Events Square is looking to be bigger and better than ever this year. The Organisers seem to have gone all out to ensure there’s something to suit every age and taste, while still keeping a true South West flavour to the event. ARTISTS TO BENEFIT FROM HENRI LLOYD FALMOUTH WEEK A new addition for Falmouth Week this year is exposedART, an opportunity for artists the utilised the increased tourism, visitors usually exceed 100,000 during the week, to sell their work. Blue Sound Project
Dedicated to encouraging local people to make the most of the Plymouth coastline and estuary, the Marine Biological Association Blue Sound project has just launched and will be running for the next three and a half years, thanks to a £388,286 grant from Access to Nature, a £25 million grant programme that is part of the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces programme. Last month’s launch saw over 3,500 people visit the project’s Environmental Marquee and over 150 people taking part in activity sessions as diverse as crabbing, family nature activities and snorkel taster sessions at Tinside Lido. Going forward, the Blue Sound Project will be working with the community to tackle barriers to accessing the local marine environment. Shred Classic
Something for two wheeled fans, to tie in with the Tour De France (that annual cycle race around France in July), Plymouth based magazine, Shred have organised a special, high action city centre cycle race which will see the area around the Hoe, Plymouth locked down on the evening on Weds 25 August. Over 100 racers are expected to battle it out from 6pm on the 1mile course, with sprints at certain points around the course for extra prizes (the first rider past each point every lap wins an extra prize).

Xtravert is a Cornwall based social enterprise venture made up of passionate skaters, who build all sorts of wooden wonders from skate ramps and timber buildings to crafting office furniture, as well as helping young people launch new careers for themselves in the carpentry industry. NO TO RACISM, BIGOTRY AND SEGREGATION Cornwall respect festival is a one day event which acknoleges and the many different cultures in our area and uses the arts to celebrate diversity, and as a way of raising awareness of, and challenging prejudice. This year’s festival is being held on August 14 in Truro, and kicks off in Victoria Gardens with Out of the ark sound system and workshops that include, drumming, dance, circus, and capoeira. There’ll also be face painting food and more. At 5pm there’ll be a parade through Truro from 5pm, which includes local samba bands. Later on the event hots up on Lemon Quay at around 6pm until midnight, with live music from Nucleus Roots, Zubop Gambia, Kissmet, and Braga Tanga. Yes, there’s booze – two bars and international food stands. LEMONFEST A new music festival for South Devon takes place on Sat 18 Sept at Newton Abbot Racecourse, Devon. We couldn’t wait until Leftfield play Relentless Boardmasters this month to ask our pressing questions – Aldo Vanucci talks to Leftfield’s Neil Barnes about his ringtone, signing the cast of Glee and that Guinness song… You’ve been doing this a long time, how different does it feel now from when you first started? It’s not different at all, in many ways it feels quite similar, I think because what we are doing is still relevant, I have a new band now and the reaction we get is as good as it’s always been.
How has the internet changed your life, whether in music or just your life in general? It’s just been a massive change in how we communicate and how fast, everything is quicker now, things that took ages now happen almost instantly, I communicate with people who like my music through twitter and Facebook.
The Horses advert for Guinness with Phat Planet on it is highly thought of, how did that come about? Well, there is a lot of folk lore about all that, the truth was we had finished that track, a friend of ours played it to them and at the time they couldn’t quite find the right piece of music, they heard it and it just fitted perfectly, there is something that still slightly annoys about that advert. It was voted top in some kid of TV list, like top 100 adverts, there was 15 minutes devoted to talking about it and at no time do we, the person who played them the track or the track name get mentioned, they just don’t mention the music.
What’s your ringtone, is it one of your songs? Ha! No, I don’t listen to my music after I’ve released it.
What song would you choose to represent you in the musical Olympics? It would have to be “Song of Life”, that has a lot of everything in it, it represent who and what we are and also was written at a very important time about someone very special to us. Why do you think your music crossed over to the nondance fraternity? Well for a start we did that track with John Lydon and one with Tony Halliday from Curve but also we come from a punk background, I think what we do is a combination of punk attitude and dance ethos. Your music has been used on adverts and in films; do you turn down much for ethical reasons? In the past we have, once the Conservative Party wanted to use tyou one of our tracks and we said no. The thing is the music industry is big industry, these are multinational companies, and so it would be hypocritical to turn down adverts for a big company when you are on a massive label. Also I think there is more interesting music on TV a lot of the time compared to daytime radio. If you hadn’t been a producer what would you have liked to do? Well I used to be a teacher, I enjoyed that, it’s the communication, which I feel I still do: it’s just communication through a different way.
The first time we went to the Heavenly Social it was Norman Cook warming up, you next, then the Chemical Brothers, what’s the weirdest line up you’ve been put on? Erm, I can’t think of any weird ones, around that time we played with Weatherall a lot but that’s not weird... So you’ve never been made to follow a French juggler or anything? Wow a French juggler that would be amazing, I’d love someone to do that, or maybe something like Howard Marks, that would be great. I’ve always wanted to do a night called Random, where we have wild and crazy things happening all the time, one week a fire-eater, one week a dwarf doing spoken word, then a drag queen singing drum n bass... That would be excellent, you don’t see that kind of thing except at festivals. If you could have written one song what would it be? Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell. Did you know Ashley Beedle collects cover versions of that? Does he? Oh I have a few, or maybe even Galveston, that’s on the same album that was written by Jimmy Webb. In fact anything by Jimmy Webb: he is amazing.

Formed over cider in Teignmouth, currently wowing at festivals from Glasto to Fallstock. Rachael D’Cruze talks to The Quails frontman Dan Steer about their journey... Despite being the best musical export from the South West to make a mark on the national music scene this year, The Quails are staying firmly rooted in the South West (they hail from Teignmouth), resisting the often par for the course move to the big smoke. “We like it by the sea,” confirms frontman Dan Steer. Indeed. The Quails have also turned down offers from independent music labels, instead releasing on their own label, Like the Sound Records, and distributing through universal. “So many bands get caught up in that big label fishnet - they sign lots of bands, and if just one make it they’re laughing, and then they don’t care about the others,” says Dan.
Master of Imperfection, out now, is The Quails’ second album and as you might have come to expect by now, was recorded locally at Sawmill studios on the River Fowey. It’s a significantly more sophisticated offering than their first album, I’ve Heard It’s All Rumours, which was largely about going out and meeting women. Dan says that the band were a lot more comfortable with themselves when it came to recording Master of Imperfection, where the lyrics are a little darker and deeper and the sound has progressed into something instantly recognisable as The Quails - a fresh indie / indie rock, with pop and blues influences – heady and infused with energy.
Dan explains that while the internet made it a lot easier to create their own label, he actually thinks it’s harder for new bands to get recognition these days as people have become complacent, sitting on the computer to listen to music rather than going to gigs to discover new bands. In contrast, Dan says he definitely thinks it’s through gigging that The Quails have got to where they are today: “We’re really proud of our live sound. We’re always adding new bits and bobs to our gigs to get the audience going and enjoying themselves,” says Dan.
Dan tells us that they chose to release the track “Argentina” are their single, because it’s the most accessible, radio friendly track on the album. These boys have their heads screwed on. “I wrote the song when travelling around America” confirms Dan, who was contacted by Pangea TV about making a video to go with with it. The product is a seductively arty black and white, Hitchcock inspired video filmed on a steam train.

Talking of getting fans going, The Quails have played a plethora of festivals this summer and have gone down distinctively well. Dan tells us that getting established on the festival circuit is one of the things that’s really important to the foursome. As well as playing the biggies, like Glastonbury, who’ve already invited them back for next year, they’re playing pretty much all of the South West festivals too. They are particularly strong live offering: professional and powerful, you’d never guess that they were formed on a whim, when Dan had sunk a few too many ciders and decided to recruit some band mates... Steer is fortunate in that his voice is incredibly distinctive and really sets their sound apart from the masses of other indie bands and he’s a charismatic chap too. The rest of the band more than hold their own too and Max Armstong is a demon on the guitar.
So where next? The Quails have already supported The Kooks and Newton Faulkner, opened for Muse and controversially for Motorhead too. It won’t be long before people are opening for them – you heard that hear first. Catch them live if you can. Dr. Sketchy’s anti-art school arrives in Cornwall. Rachael D’Cruze talks to host Fondant Fancy about Falmouth’s fabulous new monthly night.
Dr. Sketchy’s is an anti-art school phenomenon. Conjured up in Brooklyn, in 2005 by Molly Crabapple, an artiste and former artists’ model, who posed the question: ‘Why can’t drawing naked people be sexy?’ So she snapped up an array of burlesque beauties, alternative models, performers and added ridiculous drawing contests with prizes to be won, drinks to be drunk and merriment to be had by all. Other cities then wanted in on her inky event and so with such demand Molly wrote ‘How to start Your Own Dr. Sketchy’s’. There’s now a dot-todot of branches all over the world, from Melbourne to London to Tokyo, and now Cornwall. So, you’re the brains behind bring Dr. Sketchy to Cornwall (in the South West Dr. Sketchy’s also thrives in Exeter). What can we expect from your new monthly night? Is it boob drawing for naughty folks? There will be boobs galore, plenty of flesh and form, and lashings of naughtiness but it’s not just for naughty folk… if for absolutely anyone who wants to see a dash of cabaret but also explore their creativity in a lively environment. Sounds like Art College meets the Moulin Rouge with a little bit of Russell Brand’s biography thrown in. So, you don’t have to wear a tweed twin set, but do you have to be a budding artist? Ooh, dapper gents with pipes...You don’t need any drawing skills which is why it’s such fun. There’s a mix of artists, art students and those who simply fancy giving it a whirl. We’re guessing Dr. Sketchy nights appeal to both sexes? And those in between! With it being a mix of sketch-a-rama and cabaret it brings in male
and female artists and then those who are flirting with sketching but who also want to catch a shimmy and shake on the stage. Why Falmouth? Is it the Burlesque capital of Cornwall? Not yet, but I’ll darn well try! There are already wellestablished burlesque and cabaret performers scattered across the county with equally delightful nights of this persuasion but Falmouth is decidedly lacking. I used to pop down from London to visit friends and was shocked that there were no decadent and dingy clubs featuring burlesque. So I packed up my polyester, treasure and tat to get the scene going in what is a wonderfully artistic haven and to introduce some of the mischief I got up to in London. Oh, so it’s followed you from the big smoke. Are you making an effort to include South West performers? All the current upcoming acts are based in Cornwall with models coming from Newquay, Camborne and here in Falmouth. I’m always after interesting models and performers for the sketchers to immortalise. We like loved the Cherry Shakewell and Miss Scarlet Rose acts on your opening night, as well as the slightly immature, but to be expected buzz around the anticipation of nipple tassels. If we come again can we expect something different, or a re-run? Be honest now Fondant Fancy. Each month I’ll be presenting an eclectic mix of performances and styles- from your music hall wink wink burlesque, tassel-twirling show-girls and alternative fetishesque attire to smoldering strip tease and circus side show. Glastonbury celebrated it’s 40th anniversary this year in what was easily the hottest ever festival in it’s history. The vibe on site at Pilton in Somerset was wicked and everyone was out to play hard and party, including the street artists. Right now, I’m finding it very hard to reconcile the beautifully desolate country flicker of ‘The Cross That Stole This Heart Away’ with Micah P Hinson’s confused, myopic conservatism but I guess it doesn’t make much difference whether he’s a gun-toting redneck, a lily-livered liberal or a Native American spiritualist (or all three combined) as long as the songs resonate in the listener with some kind of universal hope and recognition. Which they do. Dark, dystopian but raddled with warm-blooded chutzpah. Backbone
The RG Morrison Farewell My Lovely (Loose Music)
New folk and Americana-inspired second album from the South West collective that’s led by the talented Rupert Morrison- the man behind Drift Records (the label and indie record shop in Totnes). This time he’s taken his craft to the home of Danny and the Champions of the World and the Felice Brothers. Since the debut, their sound has progressed to fuller, richer pastures, maintaining the same warm vocals and organic instrumentation. There’s also a great deal of depth and space in the production. Fans of Midlake and Bella Union Records will not be disappointed. Arash Torabi

Four Good Men and True (Heptown)
Third album from Mod-friendly Swedish quartet, with a nod to ‘60s British bands such as The Creation and Them. Although their sound centres on the retro, the actual songs themselves are not plagiarised from the era that has influenced them. There’s plenty of light & shade too, with Pack Up Your Troubles at the rock & soul end of the spectrum and Time To Cry as the mid-album tearjerker. The Men are a great example of a band who can bring originality to the table whilst recreating a sound from another time. Arash Torabi

(Jacket Pocket Records) Despite claiming to be “future disco”, the rock-meets-electronica hybrid of Neon Circus is an age-old formula, so this album could have been made any time over the last 30 years. But there’d be nothing wrong with that, if like Delphic, they had the songs to back it up. What you get instead is tuneless pseudo

(Aquatic Lab) New Zealand’s self-acclaimed “greatest dubstep export” drop a debut album, with big-ups from the likes of Skream, Hatcha and N Type. As dubstep has become more and more formulated, it’s harder to pin standout or trademark qualities to individual artists. But then, like with D&B, that isn’t the point. All the usual suspects are present: sub-bass, wobbly bass, spacey bits and dark bits. Plus a few interesting vocal samples thrown in for good measure. Yes, it’s dubstep alright. Arash Torabi

Listening to SSLYBY is like being transported back to a more innocent time of late night Radio 1 indie. It is easy to imagine the sainted John Peel thoroughly approving of their ramshackle brand of power pop melodies and DIY sound, not to mention great titles such as All Hail Dracula! And Stuart Gets Lost Dans Le Metro. On this offering the band have embraced a slightly folkier side and where it not for their name and more perverse whims it would be easy to imagine them gaining a more substantial fan base, as it is on this evidence they are likely to remained revered by their cult following. According to the old adage, one should never judge a book by its cover. Well in this case you may be forgiven for doing so. Surfing The Void is, much like its cover image, space-obsessed, vapidly hip, batshit-crazy and in poor taste. The relentless touring the band embarked upon following their debut appears to have added a muscular toughness to their sound. They now have more in common with American rock than new rave, whatever that may have been. Lyrically the album is largely obsessed with space travel, lasers and cosmology; which at least makes a change from traditional second-album themes. Ultimately though, Surfing The Void is a letdown, whilst the first record had hooks in abundance, there is little here that sticks in the memory. Unfortunately, one step backwards for Klaxon-kind! The last few months have seen Janelle Monae’s reputation soar; a guest spot on Outkast’s Big Boi’s debut solo record, feted by Prince and the new darling of the blogosphere. It’s a relief to report that on this occasion the hype is very nearly justified, The ArchAndroid is the kind of debut album that convinces the listener that the artist in question has a glittering future. The Kelis-like single Tightrope will draw casual listeners in but over the course of the record Monae covers a dizzying amount of
On paper Tired Pony (who I keep calling Dead Pony by mistake) look like a dream group – Peter Buck from REM joining forces with Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody and securing some top notch guest contributers including the gorgeous Zooey Deschanel She and Him partner M.Ward and the baritone Tom Smith from the Editors. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the songs were very Snow Patrol-esque but there are a few surprises in there, including the forthcoming single Dead American Writers, which has a bit more bite than the others, and the poetic The Good Book during which Smith can be heard crooning ‘This town’s like an empty box…’ Laura Williams
Sleigh Bells Treats
(Mom+Pop) It’s easy to imagine Sleigh Bells plugging that unenviable festival slot – the one in the early hours of the morning when everyone is completely twatted and just wants to dance to some dodgy electro beats. Putting on their album to listen to in the comfort of your own home/car/ears is a different matter altogether. Comparisons are easy to make with this band, partly because they appear to adopt some familiar riffs, vocals and sound techniques – from Lily Allen to the Flaming Lips and Gwen Steffani to the Beastie Boys. If you’re thinking that’s a good thing then think again. At times to album sounded like nothing more than white noise – forgettable at best and irritating at most. DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH Plymouth acousto-punks,
SEE YELLOW, don’t like to hang around. 20 songs in fewer than 37 minutes attests to that. And this desire to not over-do things makes their album, ‘Change One Thing’, an instantly loveable artifact, especially when the songs themselves are shufflesome gems hovering somewhere in the new wave ether between the Violent Femmes, Wire and The Astronauts. As a tight rockabilly snare underpins the purposeful acoustic guitar strums, the likes of ‘If I Knew What I Know Now’ and the brilliant ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ offer a window into the workings of a mind that views the personal as the political, without forgetting that there’s a world of pain out there that needs tending to. Even their cover of The Clash’s ‘Safe European Home’ is skewered with the same homespun dynamics. Love it. www.seeyellow.co.uk Backbone

The lovely/terrible thing about reviewing demos is that I sometimes get to hear stuff that will never see the light of day. Step forward ROBIN VIZARD, whose lovely/terrible album, ‘Bloody Rubbish’, is so out of step with the rest of the world you can’t help but warm to its tacky genius. Every other song sounds like an ersatz version of ‘Cool For Cats’ by Squeeze: where couplets come thick, fast and drenched in realism. Indeed, if you get past the form, the content can be richly rewarding. ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ – an ode to everyday social hazards – features nuggets like “So I walked to the café for a sarnie and some tea / There’s a geezer in the corner looking daggers at me / Uh-oh / That’s two sugars to go / I’ll be off in a mo / Cos this world is very mercenary”. Named after an unsolved murder victim, Bristol quintet, PARRINGTON JACKSON, are angling for that mysterious, quasi-gothic persona that so many furrowed-brow musos have adopted before them. They do it well enough, for sure, Naming yourselves after a fruit could be disastrous but there are only so many over-delayed guitar but, thankfully, PINEAPPLE have opted for swirls I can hack before a brisk walk in the one of my favourites. On their demo EP, the park is required. You’ve gotta love bands which play on words (well some of them anyway – tribute acts aside) and HYMN FOR HER inject the same humour into their name and album artwork (a Courtney Love lookalike sat in front of a trailer There’s a lot of wistful nu-folk about these days but breastfeeding a kid and supping on a beer) Cornwall trio, MOONLET & THE LOVE-MONKS, as they do into their songs. Lucy and Wayne, are too happy in their faintly psychedelic-pop the duo behind the band, literally spend bubble to care about what anyone else is doing. their lives in a trailer and there’s no escaping that in the music. It The strength of their EP, ‘Mary The Snowdeer, I ain’t the kinda thing you listen to in your Cotswold mansion put it Hate You’, lies in its knowing vulnerability although that way! Their new album, The American Stream, was mixed by their slightly cringeworthy sense of the ridiculous Jim Diamond (former White Stripes producer) and it too has that may split the pack somewhat. Soft voices dart unmistakable, messy raw sound which is just on the right side of about each other and campfire guitars gently bristle, but songs like sounding crap. There are undertones of John Power and the odd ‘Dry Martini’ and ‘Made With Love’ betray a lyrical bathos that you’ll sniff of Neil Young but these guys have a long way to go before they either take to your heart or mock heartily. Me? This time it’s Chichester quartet, WATERMELONS, whose self-titled EP is released this month via iTunes, Amazon etc. They’re clearly a band in love with melodies of the inoffensive and slightly melancholic form, which is fine by me if they continue to result in indie-pop tearjerkers like ‘Please Don’t Say’ and ‘My Tree’. There’s a slight nod to the ramshackle bounce of The Libertines on ‘Garden Path’ but you get the feeling that these boys are far too clean-cut to follow down that murky road, maybe too much so. Perhaps a good dose of existential angst is just

They featured in the Royal Academy’s seminal 1997 exhibition ‘Sensation’, showing a sculptural version of Goya’s Disasters of War and returned to Goya’s work in 2003 when they caused outrage for painting their own ghoulish imagery over an original set of etchings. My Giant Colouring Book returns to this method of working, this time appropriating join-the-dot drawings from a children’s picture book. This series of 21 etchings offers a fascinating introduction to the imaginations of two of Britain’s most inventive and subversive artists.

Completely shut off from the outside world, the now grown up children have their own vocabulary and believe cats to be man eating predators. When their father decides to invite a woman in to service his son’s sexual urges the domestic balance is irrevocably disturbed. It is only a matter of time before the walls of their superficially constructed world of childhood innocence and fantasy come tumbling down. This hyperrealistic Greek science fiction film is like The Truman Show meets The Village, but more touching and scarier than both of those films put together.

Featuring the kind of cast that would have made little boys weep, the only name missing from the line up of ultimate action stars is Jean-Claude Van Damme, but just console yourself with Lundgren, Jet Li, Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham and The Governator himself Schwarzenegger. Should be tremendous fun.

LIVE Thu.19 Exeter According to some deluded detractors on the Evening Herald forum, Plymouth’s White Rabbit doesn’t deserve to be championed because it doesn’t support local bands. Something of an irony when you consider that twelve of them took part in the fundraising event to keep the place afloat (Plymouth, 20th June). I missed a handful but arrived to find THE BLOWOUTS power driving through their punk rock’n’roll with keen abandon. They donated sales of their demo to the venue too. Nice gesture. KAT MARSH was on top form, busying herself with looped vocal harmonies and bass lines, allowing her seductively soulful croon to meander through the funked up cadences. THE ROOFTOP GAMBLER were amazing. They have a knack of locating the kind of awe-inspiringly understated melodies that are usually the stock-intrade of progressive US post-punk luminaries. Equally so, erstwhile art-rockers, THE BEDROOM PROJECT, who, on the strength of this spirited performance, should be welcomed into the hearts and minds of a whole new generation of 21st century punks. James MacGregor’s Americana-infused HEAD OF PROGRAMMES were a downbeat delight. Drawing from the same dark well as Bill Callahan, HOP’s alt-country rock shuffle may have its roots in a gothic tradition but the band’s delivery still has the ability to uplift. Metalcore was represented in no uncertain terms by the brutal yet cerebral BROTHERHOOD OF THE LAKE, a band primed for national recognition by dint of their scorched-earth onslaught. Regrettably, things started to get a little bit hazy before VIOLENT VIRTUES took to the stage with their competent screamoid riffola. So much so, that by the time metal growlers, TRANSGRESSION, were plugged in and ready to go, I was too immersed in the giddy pleasures of whisky and Black Pearl to commit their craft to memory. Apologies. To sum up, a lot of bands played to a lot of new people, a lot of those people went home happy, and a lot of money was raised. Job done. A few days later and, thankfully, the venue’s still open for business, with schlock-core punkabilly boys, THE KOFFIN KATS, doing their best to reinvent The Misfits through a Tiger Army filter (24th June). The Michigan trio wasted no time in imbuing their rough-hewn rock’n’roll with onstage acrobatics and genre-specific showmanship, even if the show was only witnessed by a handful of dapper diehards. THE BRONX, you’re too good to us. Playing not one but two full sets, it’s hard to imagine another band this side of Kiss putting in so much time and effort to please its fanbase (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 26th June). Their first guise, as MARIACHI EL BRONX – my preferred incarnation – betrayed a genuine fondness for Mexican folk music that the steamingly hot crowd couldn’t help but embrace. Brighton’s THE GHOST OF A THOUSAND did their level best to fill the interval with seething sonics before The Bronx-in-rock-clothing’s satisfyingly raucous punk rock’n’roll sealed the deal. Due to a double-booking, Newcastle’s LAVOTCHKIN had the unenviable task of playing the graveyard slot. Credit where credit’s due, the nocomplaining quintet put their heads down and rocked fucking hard, despite the drastically depleted crowd. It’s an interesting proposition, the hillbilly-does-rock shtick of HAYSEED DIXIE, where banjo, fiddle and Soggy Bottom harmonies turn classic tunage by the likes of AC/DC, Sabbath and Queen into bluegrass stompers (The Hippo, Plymouth, 7th July). Unfortunately, the novelty tended to wear off after the umpteenth hybrid hoedown, despite the impressive musicianship and general onstage bonhomie. You can’t beat a good beatdown on a sultry Sunday afternoon, especially when the men responsible for it are Massachusetts supremos, CONVERGE (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 11th July). After KYLESA’s slightly underwhelming avalanche of low-end sound, the headliner’s restless fury and bludgeoning, complex riffola was impossible to ignore. As a shaven-headed and cocksure Jacob Bannon paced the stage, the band locked straight into turbo-speed and didn’t let up for an hour. Which, in snare drumbeat ratio-speak, equates to about seven hours of, say, a Scissor Sisters show. Now that’s value for money. See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)

Sound in Penzance with its exquisite new revamp has just celebrated the opening weekend and oh what a party it was! The vibe was buzzing whilst the DJs churned out a variety of electro-ravey beats along with your chart smashers, which certainly got the dance floor rammed and the atmosphere pumping.
