LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

3LONG WHARF THEATRE

Liz Beatty ASSISTANTPRODUCTION(pronouns)

We acknowledge that indigenous peoples and nations have for gen erations stewarded the lands and waterways of what we now call the state of Connecticut. We honor and respect the enduring relation ship that exists between these peoples and nations and this land. We are standing on the unceded territory of the Paugussett, Quinnipiac, and Wappinger peoples. We remind ourselves that along with stolen land came stolen people. It is our responsibility to the future to know our past.

Tow Stage, in the C. Newton Schenck III Theatre, holds our history. This space is where we began our journey. It’s where we learned new things about ourselves and felt part of a larger community, discov ering new worlds with people who looked and sounded different than us.

We then move on to a musical about Jelly Roll Morton that changed the game. New Haven, where many of the jazz greats performed, is a fitting place to share this groundbreaking musical that honors the power and transcendence of jazz. With Dennis Whitehead Darling and Patricia McGregor on our project, the process of bringing Jelly’s Last Jam to life has been pure joy. We are proud to produce this concert reading in part nership with the Stetson Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library, and Branch Manager Diane X Brown, who has been a champion of this project from the beginning.

Warmly yours, Jacob G. Padrón

See a show. You’re already here and we are grateful for it! We welcome you to share your experience with your friends and family, as well as to return and see other productions in our 2022-23 season. Events are continually updated at longwharf.org/programming.

Welcome to Act 1 of our 2022-23 season, our 58th year of creating theatre by, with, and for the Greater New Haven community. This is a season of transition and change, all in service of becoming more accessible to artists, audiences, and lifelong learners. We are shifting from being anchored to a space with four walls to making the entire City of New Haven our home, building a lively exchange of culture, conversation, and joyful gatherings in a multitude of Elm City spaces. December marks the end of our time at 222 Sargent Drive and the New Year will bring Long Wharf Theatre into ven ues across New Haven. Our administrative offices are moving to the heart of the Arts District on Audubon Street, and we are energized by being in community with our creative colleagues and partners every day.

We begin with a new play in development called Dignity, Always Dignity. When I began my tenure as Artistic Director, I im mediately phoned an artist who has always inspired me: Bryce Pinkham. I asked Bryce if there was a passion project he could bring to our audienc es and a few months later we were in a rehearsal room seeing the earliest seeds of this timely new play. Inspired by the golden age musical, Bryce and his brilliant collaborators Zack Fine, Rona Siddiqui, and Kirya Traber, are creating a theatrical meditation on our climate crisis through music and humor (in equal measure).

Flying Bird’s Diary tells the story of Flying Bird, aka, Fidelia Fielding/Jeets Bodernashor, who fought “to save her language and culture against all

Redefining what theatre is and who it speaks to, Live From the Edge is a unique performance event that turns the poem into a communal act. Steven and Mildred will have the opportunity to explore different neighborhoods in New Haven to find the right artistic container to present this work, demonstrating this new model’s ability to give power back to creators in determining how and where their works will be presented.

A production by Long Wharf Theatre’s Mellon Foundation Playwrights-inResidence, UNIVERSES, Live From the Edge will showcase the ensemble’s special brand of fusion theatre in a “best of” evening that tracks the evolution of their poetic language from childhood rhymes and community rituals, to poetry and theater, hip-hop and gospel.

A SEASON IN THREE ACTS

The story of a true Connecticut hero, Flying Bird aka Fidelia Fielding/Jeets Bodernashor (1827-1908). We first encounter Flying Bird, as a young Mohegan girl, in the 1800s, in a world attempting to erase everything she believes in. As the years pass, Flying Bird faces seemingly impossible obstacles but never loses sight of her goal: to save her language and culture against all odds.

A Community Event // Fall 2022 AHome(coming):CommunityParade

By Aaliyah Miller

This community-based project aims to share stories of Muslim Americans, showcase their experiences, and begin meaningful dialogue with Muslim and non-Muslim communities throughout Connecticut. This season’s offering, I AM: American/Muslim, will be a multimedia production based on interviews with Muslim Americans, centering around a “Muslim mosaic” and painting the truth in contrast to the frequent demonization of Muslims in the media.

A Concert Reading of an Iconic Musical // September 17 – 18, 2022

Live From the Edge

By DirectedUNIVERSESbySteven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz-Sapp

Directed & Co-Produced by Dane Figueroa Edidi

At the birth of jazz in the early 20th century, one man led the band. The legendary Jelly Roll Morton revolutionized American music like no one before him. His life—the dizzying heights and inconceivable lows—becomes a thrilling theatrical ride in Jelly’s Last Jam. With an electrifying cast and a red-hot band, this concert reading spotlights the story of a trailblazing artist and celebrates New Haven’s love of jazz.

New Play Readings // Virtual Black Trans Women at the Center

Together we will say goodbye to our home of nearly 60 years and build a collective dream for the future with an inspiring community event. A series of festive communal rituals and micro-performances will close out our time at Sargent Drive and move us, as a community, into broader New Haven. With us, we take the best parts of our history: our stories, our relationships, and memories of our extraordinary body of work. This fall, we begin writing the next chapters of our story with our communities.
