SERVICE, 84 OXFORD ST In stark contrast to the modern flashiness of it’s next door neighbour, SERVICE has retained the historic feel of it’s store pictured above as a perfect backdrop for showcasing the culture of the brands it represents. Grainy black and white photos and old Kauri floors set the scene for wall to wall jeans and workwear in every cut and size from Melbourne based denim afficianado’s NEUW, along with their offshoot brand ROLLA’S. WORLD FAMOUS WESTSYDE, 58 OXFORD ST Sydney’s tight-knit skating community have banded together to save the once struggling WORLD FAMOUS WESTSYDE skate shop and paint dispensary, moving from Dullich Hill this year to set up camp mid-block at No 58, complete with a instore skate ramp, pirate radio station and an extensive list of skateboard brands, clothing and accessories. And just last week, as part of a CITY OF SYDNEY initiative to transform vacant shop fronts in the area, opened new exhibition space A KIND OF GALLERY just up the road at No 70. DYSPNEA A power stopping collective of Western Australia’s finest creative talent, with unique design, fabrics and cuts, DYSPNEA’s crazy group of designers are definitely one’s to watch - I sat down with the girls to talk a little about their label. Where does the name Dyspnea come from? We we’re up late one night abusing Google terms. Dyspnea popped up, it means “hungry for air”. We enjoyed the difficulty yet versatility of the word. What inspires you as designers? All our mates and their mates-mates. What separates your clothes from other designers? Our textiles, we enjoy throwing shit together. What inspired this collection? We got our hands on holographic material and just ran with it. What are you greatest achievements so far? Getting into Perth Fashion Festival - Meg Gray styling our collection - and being noticed by all you freaks out there. What has been your biggest struggle? Running a mini sweatshop out of a garage! Are there any hints we can have to the next collection? #mermaidsperm How are you getting your name out into the world? It’s all about instagram babes Have you got any advice for designers trying to go down the same path as you? Team up; we don’t know how people do it on their own.

DI$COUNT UNIVERSE An underground phenomenon,, DI$COUNT UNIVERSE is already firmly on the map as a favourite of club kids, fashionistas and celebrities alike. The passion of two Melbourne beauties, with their sequin sanctuary Cami and Nadi have blasted off into the atmosphere with the likes of Iggy Azaela sporting their expressionistic designs. Music and art have been the main inspiration for the girls, sewn with a social commentary into in their psychedelic range of holsters, tees, pants and jackets until their hands have bled. D M A 1 starting out with just a couple of screen-printed t-shirts, as a side project to his job as menswear designer for GENERAL PANTS, SAM MOORE’s DEAD CASTLE PROJECT has rapidly transformed into a burgeoning fashion label for boys and girls. positioned he says ‘at the darker side of street wear’ with unisex cuts, monochrome graphics and a rock‘n’roll, non-conformist party vibe, DCP’s unique brand of ‘street goth’ has proven a hit with it’s ‘cool kids cant die’ tee quicky becoming a tumblr sensation. MITCHELL RYAN caught up with MOORE on the eve of his fouth season range launch to find out for 1AM where his dark vision is taking him next. photographed by AMANDA TSE.

SAM, as an emerging designer can you give us a run-down on the label? I founded Dead Castle Project about two years ago with a vision of transforming ideas of unisex apparel, starting out with just a couple of screen printed t-shirts. Since then we’ve gained a following with our monochrome aesthetic and cult graphics - our ‘Cool Kids Cant Die’ tee quickly became a Tumblr sensation with 120K shares. From here we have gone from strength to strength as our skill set and experience has evolved. DCP is now a fully wearable brand, not only doing tees but crew, trackies, headwear, shorts, tanks, and soon jackets and more for Winter 2014. What differentiates your label from all the other streetwear brands out there at the moment? We seem to be one of the only brands in Australia really pushing a ‘street goth’ vibe, and also being totally monochrome it becomes very recognisable. I have always been big on branding and you will find a lot of our garments with “DEAD” plastered on them. For us this has worked well, especially since monochrome and sportswear are trending so much at the moment! We are actually going to starting using DEAD as our brand name going forward. What’s the inspiration behind this collection? This new collection is our take on classic sports wear with mesh football jerseys, reversible mesh tanks and mesh basketball shorts. We have still tried to add our dark twist on the garments. Our take on the numbers theme was to run the 100 emoji icon, on the front of our footballs. You’re a top designer at General Pants - will we be seeing your range in their stores? No not at this stage, I keep my DCP work separate to my GP life.
Do you try to swim against the mainstream? Not here at GP where I’m paid to design commercial product but definitely with DCP, it’s a great outlet for me to do more non-conformist, directional garments. Where is the label headed and where will we be seeing DCP in the future? I have picked up one of Australia’s best agencies the “Writers agency” who sold my range to great success last season, selling into 15 stores and 1 major (45 stores), so am pretty happy with the Australian distribution at the moment. I have big plans to pick up agents in markets like Japan and the US but again I can’t grow too fast, so I am keeping my retailers tight at this stage. What advice do you give to other young designers from a relatively young perspective yourself? I would have to say its all about networking, the fashion industry is not very big and you soon figure that out pretty quickly. Don’t burn your bridges, look and listen, listen, listen; you can learn so much from other people’s mistakes! Also make sure you have your systems in place before you take on lots of stores, otherwise you run the risk of being very badly organised and this will leave a permanent bad taste in the buyers’ mouths. Don’t rush it! You already have collaborated with some amazing celebrities and design teams, but who would be your ultimate dream person to collab with on a product? I have been super lucky to work with so many talented people this early in my career, but the brands I would love to work with in the future would be the guys from KTZ (Kokontozai), Alexanda Wang and that crazy man Jeremy Scott! MORE THAN A DECADE down the track and four albums into an illustrious career, London-based New Zealand band The Veils has hit a lanky stride. Latest album Time Stays, We Go is packed to the brim with memorable, melodious songs and on stage they’re a force to be reckoned with. In fact, at their recent Wellington and Auckland shows they stunned crowds with the majesty of their music, with a couple of fans at the Auckland show even praying to the band in the front row. Founder, singer, songwriter and guitarist Finn Andrews is getting used to the adulation, with much of it directed his way. Still shy and unassuming, despite his attention-grabbing penchant for round brimmed hats, tightly cut suits and Winklepicker boots, he has exuded a quiet confidence as an artist since recording and releasing stunning debut album The Runaway Found 13 years ago. Coming from a musician still in his teens based at the bottom of the world, that album took fans of heartfelt, intense, uncontrived songwriting by surprise. A great, big, emotional rollercoaster of a surprise. Subsequent albums Nux Vomica in 2006 and Sun Gangs in 2009 consolidated The Veils’ appeal, both proving that the debut wasn’t a strange, unrepeatable accident. Since then the band has toured relentlessly, relocated permanently to London, lost and gained a few members and finally departed from indie stalwart Rough Trade to release the new album on their own label, Pitch Beast. Time Stays, We Go is the sound of a band reaffirming its past and stamping its enduring appeal. The album doesn’t stray too far from The Veils’ signature style yet the band appears to be comfortably poised to craft even more albums to make people swoon. Watch them live and it’s apparent they inhabit the music without losing touch with the audience. With Andrews as a form of indie shaman, leading his band to the edges of honesty and artistry, the band will never be boring. After all, boredom equals death.
Did you select Los Angeles studio Seedy Underbelly in which to record the new album because of its name? It’s a pretty appropriate name for the place. We found a dead opossum in the swimming pool once. Is it a relief to get back into a studio you’ve worked in before? Yeah, the place is owned by an eccentric microphone collector, so the equipment there is pretty incredible. Getting to drive around Mulholland Drive every night was a major draw too. What’s the seediest thing you’ve seen or done since getting on the rock’n’roll rollercoaster? I’m not sure I’d call it a rollercoaster. It’s more like that log flume at Rainbow’s End. I don’t know. There have been many strange things. Who’s the seediest thing you’ve seen or done since getting on the rock’n’roll rollercoaster? I’m pretty bored of the ‘seedy rock‘n’roll band’ thing. The bands that appear on magazine covers with bottles of vodka and visible hangovers just look like total pendulous dicks to me. Surely that thing has been done enough times now and it’s time to move on, or at least actually appear with a crack pipe up your ass and needles in your eyes. That would at least show some dedication toward something interesting. Four albums into your career, what’s the biggest highlight to date? That time I appeared on the cover of Pavement with a crack pipe up my ass of course, ha ha! Which song(s) have you done that you think could or should be considered great? Well now, that’s a hard question to answer for any New Zealander or Englishman. They’re all shit. I wish I was dead. Of your original musical heroes, who have you met and what impression did they leave? Wow, the name drop section! I don’t know. I’ve met some great people but I don’t think I ever come across particularly well. I’m certain the second I walk away they turn to their mate and ask, ‘Who the
fuck was that guy in the hat? Don’t ever leave me alone with him again’. Some people have the gift of the schmooze but I, sadly, do not. Other than you, fellow Takapuna Grammar School student Sophia Burn is the only other longstanding member of the band left. Does it anchor you to have an old friend alongside you during the madness of recording and touring? Yeah of course. She’s the reason this whole thing still manages to function at all really. We used to be in the same English class at high school and so much mad and unbelievable shit has happened since then. It’s great to have each other around when times get strange. Has it been challenging for the two of you to transcend the romantic relationship you both shared once that ended? Nah, we were always friends above all else. There was a shitty few months coming out of it but nothing much in the scheme of things. I’m dating Ubi now. Sorry ladies. What things do you dig about her as a musician and friend? Well, I think her bass playing is amazing. It’s hard for her because she’s such a babe and people assume it’s for that reason she’s in the band rather than just because she’s awesome. We’ve always felt a bit like siblings really and you don’t find many people like that. Still adore the performing side of the band? Fuck yeah! I’d like to learn how to not keep accidentally breaking my guitars all the time. It makes me feel like a total dickhead. And still enjoying the band after making four albums? Well, we played the Bowery Ballroom in New York City a couple of months ago, then did a lap around Europe before heading back to New Zealand for some shows. I literally can’t imagine a better few months than that.
