To The Moon is the tenth original play in 1812’s series that explores American comedic history. From vaudeville to 1950s nightclub comedy to the origins of improvisation and political humor, all of these vintage forms have fueled new works and contemporary stories that honor our comedic past. I am a research nerd and a part of the process for each of these pieces has involved a good deal of time at the Paley Center for Media watching old kinescope recordings, searching through the “American Variety Stage” files at the Library of Congress for rare routines, combing record stores for classic comedy albums and used book stores for artist biographies, cultural and historical retrospectives. I believe we can learn a lot about who we are by what we have laughed at over the years. As Lenny Bruce said, “The only honest art form is laughter, comedy. You can’t fake it…try to fake three laughs in an hour — you can’t.” Finding a personal connection to the comedic geniuses who pioneered these forms has always been an essential part of creating this new work. It has given us the incredible opportunity to meet, work with, learn from, and perform the work of such greats as Phyllis Diller, Mort Sahl, Dick Gregory, Bob Elliot (of Bob and Ray), Tom Lehrer, and Sid Caesar, among others. The advice they have shared has informed all the comedy we make here at 1812 including To The Moon: “The laughs have to build, it’s like music – boom, Boom, BOOM!” – Phyllis Diller “If you can make each other laugh, you’ve got something.” – Bob Elliot “Tell the truth. And make it funny.” – Mort Sahl I am thrilled you are here tonight and I hope you will join us next season for another year of boom, Boom, BOOM! Enjoy To The Moon!

Four years ago, after a performance of 1812’s tribute to Sid Caesar, Our Show of Shows, an audience member named Greg Marx approached Jennifer Childs with the following: “My father was the head writer for Jackie Gleason. I have a basement full of material written for Jackie that never made it to television. Does that interest you?” The material in Marx’s collection is incredible. Honeymooners scripts with handwritten notes, joke files with titles like “Aggravating Things” and brainstormed scenes for Gleason characters like Rum Dum and The Poor Soul. Access to this material presented an exciting opportunity for the entire 1812 artistic team and through research and workshops, Jennifer Childs with just Jennifer Childs in 2012 archive. rx Ma the has created a piece that captures the spirit of of tion por a Gleason’s work and the honesty which fueled it. Thank you to Greg Marx and his mother Doreen Marx for sharing their memories of their time with Jackie Gleason, and the comedy writing archives of their father and husband, which provided so much inspiration for this play. Thank you to the astonishing Bill Irwin for his physical and theatrical genius and dramaturgy. Thank you to playwright Jeffrey Hatcher for his mentorship, great humor and skill. Thank you to the many foundations and individuals who supported this work and who continue to support new work in Philadelphia. “I think we’re going to the moon because it’s in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It’s by the nature of his deep inner soul… we’re required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream.” – Neil Armstrong

Brushing the dust off the boxes. My brother and I have been the caretakers of the Honeymooners’ legacy. Our father, Marvin Marx, wrote for Gleason as his head writer for almost twenty years. He started in New York and then made his way down to Florida where the show continued until the late 1960s. Then our father passed away after a long illness and the scripts were stored away in vaults for safe keeping. They had more sentimental value to us than monetary. After meeting with Jen Childs and Scott Greer of 1812, I realized that safekeeping the scripts in sealed vaults was doing them no service. Laughter gave them life. I invited them over and, after so many years, the old voices, not on reruns late at night, but in real life, were being heard again. Jen and Scott started to read my father’s jokes for Jackie’s monologues and I reveled in their laughter. The old jokes were being heard again and making people laugh. To The Moon honors not only Gleason and Carney’s talent, but also the many writers who worked with Gleason. My father, along with writers Herb Finn, A.J. Russell, Leonard Stern, Sid Zelinka, and my father’s long time writing partner, Walter Stone, worked tirelessly at putting words in the “Great One’s” mouth. The teams produced a show every week for a 39-week season. It was grueling, exhausting, and exhilarating all at the same time. My father, along with Walter Stone, transformed Ralph Kramden, who was one of a number of characters on the Jackie Gleason Show, into the star of the now famous half hour classic The Honeymooners. They created his loveable and simple-minded friend, Ed Norton, and Ralph and Ed’s spouses, Alice and Trixie. The greatest treat for my father was to write the words on Monday and see them aired nationally on Saturday night. So now, sixty years after Ralph and Alice’s images were aired on our black and white consoles, the spirit of The Honeymooners lives again on the stage. I hope it’s not just a trip down memory lane for my generation, but an introduction to the glory days of TV for generations who never knew what live TV was like in the 1950s, when television was in its infancy. I will always be grateful to Jen and Scott for taking some of my father’s scripts and material and using them as a springboard to bring the spirit of The Honeymooners back to life.
