From the Artistic Director Are you better off than you were four years ago? Four years ago — 2008 — our first Election Special. We were saying good-bye to a president whose popularity had bottomed out, we were on the precipice of the worst financial collapse of our generation, and the political scene was animated by Sarah Palin (the comedic gift that kept on giving). There was no incumbent and both candidates offered a new direction of sorts. In that respect we are in a very different place than we were four years ago. Better or worse is for you to decide. Four years ago — 2008 — the country was divided. The rhetoric was nasty and the pundits were not even pretending to be “fair and balanced” in their critique of the candidates anymore. There was a lot of hatred and misinformation being spewed — much like now. In this respect I do not think we are better off than we were four years ago — those divides have deepened, making political humor shows such as This Is The Week That Is ever more vital. In moments of division, comedy unites us. It creates community and promotes dialogue. We often say that the whole world wants to make you cry, we just want to make you laugh. And if ever there was a time we needed to laugh, it’s now.

Much love to Clayton & Alex.

Jeff Weiss (Honorary Producer): I last appeared on stage in 1955 at the age of seven. My elementary school was doing an original production called Happy New Year. I played the lead as “Father Time”. In the middle of my performance, I received a standing ovation. I later found out that people were standing so they could leave. Thanks to my family and friends for staying for most of the show. At that point, I decided I would be a better producer than an actor. Love to my wife Sharon, my children, and my grandchildren.

Sharon Weiss (Honorary Producer): For 43 years, I have been Jeff’s straight man in our sitcom of life... Alice to his Ralph, Edith to his Archie, Weezy to his George, Claire to his Cliff. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s never been dull. That being said, it is such a pleasure to be a part of the 1812 Productions family, where I can finally experience real comedy at its best. I’m looking forward to a long and wonderful relationship with this group. Love to Jeff, Jen, Scott, Rob, Ryan & Mac.

From our lovely subscribers... Why do I tell my friends to subscribe to 1812 — or, at the VERY least, plan to attend This Is The Week That Is? I believe that hardy, uncontrollable laughter is cathartic and contributes to good health. And I know that when the real news starts to get me down, I can count on 1812 and This Is The Week That Is to lift me up and make me feel better. Why do all the “kids” in my blended family consider This Is The Week That Is a seasonal tradition, much like some families view The Nutcracker? For five years we have been bringing any family members who are in Philly for the season to this show. They “get it” at a very core level. For a generation who appreciates the “news” on The Daily Show, this strikes a chord — and is just as smart as Jon Stewart (which is saying a lot since I believe Jon Stewart is possibly one of the smartest people on television!). Why was I happy when Tyler Melchior asked me to write this letter for 1812? As an 1812 subscriber, I am acutely aware of how little I need to commit financially to have access to this highly entertaining season every year. So, writing a letter, sending additional contributions, attending 1812 fundraisers, agreeing to be photographed with my daughter at a vulnerable moment of full laughter, and telling all my friends about 1812 is a natural extension of what it means to be a part of 1812. The folks on the stage of 1812 — Jen Childs, Pete Pryor, Scott Greer, David Jadico, and Tony Braithwaite, to name a few — are like rock stars in our household. So, when Jen Childs calls me to thank me for my (meager) contributions, I tell everyone in the family that she called me and it gives me special status. As much as they all have to do, and as busy as they all are, the people involved with 1812 Productions always seem to find the time to make their audiences, and particularly their subscribers, feel taken care of. (And I should know. The box office ends up needing to trade dates for me for almost every show!) So I strongly suggest you subscribe to 1812. It can’t hurt, unless you get those odd pains in your gut when you laugh really hard. Ann Ricksecker 1812 Subscriber
