Thirteen years ago, we created our first original piece at 1812—The Big Time: Vaudeville for the Holidays. Looking back, I realize it was a watershed moment. It inspired our exploration of comedy history, which led to other original works such as Always a Lady, Our Show of Shows, and This Is The Week That Is. It established a dedication to creating original work and introduced a brand of comedy that has become 1812’s signature. It began my creative partnerships with Scott Greer, Dave Jadico, and Tony Braithwaite, which remain some of the most joyous artistic relationships in my life. Returning to this form thirteen years later has been no less challenging and just as much fun. Whereas the first Big Time used vintage scripts, songs, and silent acts created in the vaudeville style, this time the material is all original. That said, we have continued the great vaude tradition made so famous by Milton Berle of stealing jokes and routines when we need to! The first version of The Big Time and this one are both dedicated to my Grandfather, Jim Childs Sr., who taught me most of what I know about comedy and compassion. He was a barbershop baritone whose conversations were peppered with vaudeville one-liners and burlesque staples like, “Get off the table Mabel, that two bucks is for beer.” The closing song, “I Don’t Know Why I Love You Like I Do” was his favorite. My sisters and I all learned it at a very early age and he sang it at my wedding in a barbershop quartet that included our friends John Waldie, Dave Jadico, and Michael Hollinger. I hope you enjoy The Big Time and that your holiday season is wonderful and laughter-filled.

From our lovely subscribers... Why do we love 1812 Productions? We’re not even sure how long we’ve been subscribing (we’re at that part of middle age where everything starts to run together), but we were hooked on 1812 after our very first show. Nancy’s a psychotherapist who runs the mental health and substance abuse treatment programs for a large Philadelphia agency working with HIV positive clients. In her spare time, she has a small private practice (serving mostly young artists) on the side. Sig’s a family doctor with an old-fashioned practice up in Northeast Philly (she’s pretty sure that Patsy and all of her relatives are on her patient panel!). Life is hectic, often deadly serious, and it can sometimes break our hearts. Laughter heals broken hearts and brings people together, and 1812 does laughter better than just about anyone. It’s hard to limit our praise to one page, so here are some of the reasons we love 1812: 1 0. Laughter is good exercise for our internal organs 9. This Is The Week That Is— way funnier than C-Span 8. 1812— more fun than a box of chihuahuas 7. Jen Childs makes us feel tall 6. Alex Bechtel makes us feel tiny 5. The view from Patsy’s stoop…(“alls I know is this…”) 4. The Women and Comedy Project (see! Feminists ARE funny!) 3. The Bad Song Cabaret— where else can we all sing along to “Seasons in the Sun”? 2. The funniest group of people you can find in one place in Philadelphia 1. The world can ALWAYS use more humor! If you don’t know 1812, you should. If you do, you already know why we love it so much! It’s like being part of a really cool family where you don’t dread the dinner table discussions… Hope to see you there! (We’ll be the ones laughing really hard— Sig’s the one who snorts, and Nancy’s the one who shakes and crinkles her nose!) Sigrid Larson & Nancy Roth 1812 Subscribers
