Welcome to Bunny Bunny and the start of our 2013-2014 Season! Our 17th season is all about going back to our roots and looking at our comedic history. From vaudeville to political humor to the history of Jewish humor to the celebration of some of the funniest women in the world. I can think of no better way to start this season than with this beautiful and funny play by Alan Zweibel. Gilda Radner was an idol of mine before I even knew I wanted to do comedy or theater. There was a warmth and heart about all of her humor and characters — she could make you laugh and gasp and smile and cry all at the same time. I didn’t know I wanted to be a performer but I did know that I wanted to make people feel like I felt when I watched her. One of my early “acting” jobs in Philadelphia was to dress up like Gilda’s supremely nerdy Saturday Night Live character, Lisa Lupner, and wander around this bar/nightclub in character entertaining people. There was another actor playing Lisa’s boyfriend Todd (played by Bill Murray on SNL) and the two of us had never done anything like this before so we were very nervous. But we were being paid a whole $50 for the night, so after watching every Todd and Lisa episode we could find, we put on our glasses and pocket protectors, carried around beer mugs filled with milk and went out and tried to channel Gilda and Bill. The people at the club started out by laughing at us but ended up loving us. By closing time we were leading conga lines and drunken frat boys were chanting “Li-sa! Li-sa!” I thought that must be what Gilda’s world was like all the time. It is comic lights like Gilda and whip-smart comic writers like Alan Zweibel who inspire the comedy we make here at 1812 and whose work embodies what we believe in: Comedy with heart, Theater with brains, and Laughter with abandon. Enjoy the show!

(This note originally appeared in the playbill for Bunny Bunny—Gilda Radner: A Sort of Romantic Comedy at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 1997.) These dialogues were never meant to be spoken. At least not by strangers. Let me explain. Writers are lucky. Whatever the mood, no matter the longing, the writer can use his words to connect himself to any world he wishes to visit. I happen to like my world very much: I am happily married. I have the three best children in existence and two loving parents. But I still miss my pal Gilda. A lot. So three years ago, in an attempt to connect, the lucky writer grabbed his pen and relived his cherished memories of a relationship that, despite death, is still very much alive. The words came easily. Sometimes early in the morning. Sometimes late, when everyone was sleeping. As the past came racing forward, I merely scribbled the dialogues playing in my head. It was exciting. It was funny. It was sad. It was innocently romantic. And it was personal. Very personal. The kind of thing one keeps to himself. But then I thought about the sense of loss that everyone, including those who never met Gilda, felt when she passed away. I wondered if, in addition to her work, there was something else that could pay appropriate tribute to Gilda’s time on this planet. My thoughts once again, were personal ones. Of the courage displayed when she became ill. Of the emotional boosts she received when she needed them most. So the dialogues became a book: Bunny Bunny, Gilda Radner: A Sort of Love Story. It was read by strangers, who read them with and to their friends. Privately. And in public arenas to raise proceeds for Gilda’s Club, a support community in New York City for cancer patients and their families that bears my friend’s name. It was then that I started feeling more relaxed about sharing these memories. And feel that to dramatize them may even, in fact, be purposeful. But most of all I feel blessed that I once cared so much for someone that I can vividly describe the spirit I’m still imbued with years after she died. It’s like I said before, writers are lucky. Alan Zweibel, March 1997
