WELCOME TO

LOLLAND-FALSTER

MARIELYST BEACH

Gedser Remise Railway Museum – a piece of Danish cultural history Old locomotives from the golden age of railway stand beside railway carriages and a railcar at Gedser Remise Railway Museum. This place has a special place in the heart of Danish and German Olsen Gang fans, because in 2016, the Yellow Mansion, the command post known from the Olsen Gang film ‘The Olsen Gang on The Track’, was saved and moved to Gedser. The Yellow Mansion has now been restored and serves as a miniature museum of the Olsen Gang. Close to Gedser Remise, the nostalgia continues at Gedser Station, which formed the setting of Korsbæk in the Danish TV series ‘Matador’. In the summer and during holiday periods you can ride a vintage train between Gedser Remise and Nykøbing F.

The Marielyst holiday area – life and excellent beaches There’s always something happening on Denmark’s largest wooden terrace, which frames Marielyst Torv square. Here you’ll find restaurants, bars, shops, playgrounds and a lookout tower from which you can gaze out over the area. The seaside resort town of Marielyst offers all sorts of leisure activities: Horse riding, a go-kart track, a bowling centre, a golf course, mini golf, a surf centre, a water park and boules courts. Twenty kilometres of white sandy beaches cling to Marielyst and the surrounding areas. The beaches are child-friendly, with clean water and little dunes. Everywhere on Lolland-Falster you’ll find high-quality beaches which are well worth a visit – whatever the season.

Visit the circus elephants at Knuthenborg Safari Park In the summer of 2020, the circus elephants Ramboline, Lara, Djungla and Jenny will be moving into the brand new elephant enclosure in Knuthenborg Safari Park. They’ll be leaving the circus life for lives like those they once lived on the African savannah. The retired circus elephants will be the neighbours of giraffes, wildebeest, rhinos and all the other animals that live on Knuthenborg’s magnificent savannah. If you want to get your family’s heart rates up, there are breathtaking slides which overlook the savannah and Denmark’s largest natural playground in the neighbouring Limpopoland. Close to everything When you visit Lolland-Falster, you are close to everything. Close to nature. Close to the animals. Close to the next good experience that will bring you closer together.

An amazing array of well-known and lesser-known experiences! Knuthenborg Safari Park, Lalandia and Marielyst Beach are names you probably already know, but Lolland-Falster has much more to offer. For example, visit the impressive Dodecalith monument or the Crocodile Zoo, which is home to Europe’s largest array of crocodile species. Or enjoy the quiet authentic lifestyle of the small islands and the atmosphere of our charming towns. And don’t miss out on exploring our unique landscapes, where more than 600 km of coastline, endless beaches, protected natural parks and scenic fjord landscapes await you. There’s no shortage of amazing views here, and there’s more than enough room for everyone! If you would like to experience nature from the water, you can take a trip on the Post Boat in Nakskov Fjord. And when you get hungry, allow yourself to be surprised by the variety of amazing taste experiences – our favourable climate and fertile soil really shine through in the flavours of our local produce. We welcome visitors all year round, so come and follow the changing of the seasons – for example, on a brisk hike along the over-60-km-long dike on the south coast of Lolland. Carry on reading and be inspired – and perhaps astonished – because Lolland-Falster is home to many more hidden treasures than you probably know. So seize this opportunity and come and let yourself be surprised! Please visit our website, www.visitlolland-falster.com, the local tourist office or one of our tourist attractions, where staff will do everything they can to answer your questions and give you a good experience. Because we’d really like you to visit us again!

STARS The beautiful surroundings of the former Næsgaard Agricultural School in Northeast Falster are ideal for stargazing thanks to low levels of light pollution.

With the shimmering surfaces of Guldborgsund strait to the west, the endless expanses of the Baltic Sea to the north, Grønsund strait with the islands of Møn and Bogø to the east, and Falster’s green landscapes to the south, North Falster is the ideal starting point for nature lovers and anglers. There are good options for fishing and numerous put & take lakes in the area. The many farm shops and farmers’ markets provide the opportunity to taste high-quality local produce. There is good accommodation to be found at the many lovely bed & breakfasts in the area. Go for a stroll in the Corselitze forests which overlook the Baltic Sea and see Denmark’s largest tree, the Oak of Valdemar. Corselitze Garden at the Corselitze Manor House is landscaped in the English style with an abundance of flowers, fruit trees and avenues.

In Eskilstrup you’ll also find Denmark’s Tractor Museum, which has an exhibition of tractors from between 1880 and 1960. CROCODILE ZOO

CROCODILE SAFARI IN FALSTER

WHAT YOU CAN SEE... Crocodile Zoo invites you into a cool world where you can experience Europe’s only collection of all living crocodile species. From the smallest, which you can hold in your hand, to Europe’s largest at more than five metres in length!

Experience Europe’s only collection of all living crocodile species. Meet crocodiles of all sizes, see the rare clouded leopards and say hello to the snakes, monkeys and giant tortoises at Europe’s biggest crocodile zoo. It is a very special experience to stand just a few metres away from the cold-blooded animal while it is being fed. At the Crocodile Zoo, you can get close to the cold-blooded animals – if you dare. Adventure with a bite When Sobek – Europe’s largest crocodile, at five metres in length – eats, he doesn’t do it quietly. At Crocodile Zoo, the zookeepers take you right into the world of the animals, and there are feedings and up-close encounters with the animals every day between 11:00 and 14:30 during holiday periods. The Crocodile Zoo also has a great outdoor alligator enclosure and lake, as well as a puma enclosure that is the only place in Denmark where you can see the majestic pumas and clouded leopards.

Anniversary and larger tropical enclosure The Crocodile Zoo is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with an expansion that makes the whole experience even wilder. During the summer, a new tropical enclosure will be added that more than doubles the indoor area. The giant tortoises and all the large crocodile species will be moving in, while there will be more space for audiences to experience the feedings. You’ll actually stand just a few metres from the crocodiles during feeding, but of course it’s all completely safe. NightZoo – for brave visitors The darkness lies heavily over the palms and water enclosures at the Crocodile Zoo. The gentle rippling of running water and the short cry of a bird fill the silence. There is a slight movement in the undergrowth, then suddenly a pair of red eyes gleam, stirred by the light of a torch. Sobek has woken – and he’s hungry... Over the summer, in the late evening hours you can meet Sobek, the clouded leopards and all their friends in a unique experience when Crocodile Zoo runs its NightZoo.

HOTEL SAXKJØBING

HISTORIC CHARM AND CULINARY EXPERIENCES... History is everywhere and the atmosphere is relaxed and cosy. A visit to Hotel Saxkjøbing is both luxurious and down to earth.

Feel the presence of history For more than 200 years, Hotel Saxkjøbing – one of the oldest hotels in Denmark – has been a natural and inviting gathering place for farmers and townsfolk around the old market town on Lolland. The hotel is right on the square, close to the fjord, and offers visitors a genuine, cosy and warm atmosphere. Modern hotel in historic buildings The listed historic buildings have been carefully restored. The restaurant, lounge, function room, patio and a number of rooms have been renovated, and the hotel’s modern facilities make it more inviting than ever. The hotel’s 32 rooms

– double rooms and slightly larger family rooms – are to be found along narrow corridors and in out-of-the-way nooks. Local produce and special dining experiences You’ll eat well at Hotel Saxkjøbing. Since 2006, the hotel has been owned by famous chef and entrepreneur Claus Meyer, and his food philosophy permeates the menu. The hotel restaurant is open to all for both lunch and dinner. The kitchen prepares food of the highest quality using seasonal ingredients from local farms, fishermen and food producers. The menu offers traditional Danish fare – tasty everyday dishes typically taken from

Claus Meyer’s Almanac cookbook – as well as gastronomic menus that change with the seasons. Specially selected local and freshly harvested ingredients of high quality and, wherever possible, organic as well, provide an extraordinary dining experience. Buy local specialities in the Farm Shop Stepping off the street straight into the hotel’s own Farm Shop is a bit like entering an old-fashioned grocery store. Here you can buy quality products from Lolland-Falster and other passionate food producers from all around Denmark depending on the season. The Farm Shop

also has a small cafe area where you can enjoy local specialties, a wonderful lunch or just a coffee. An ideal stop-off for cyclists Hotel Saxkjøbing is also an ideal stopoff for cyclists. When you stay at Hotel Saxkjøbing you are in the middle of Lolland, just a short distance from a wealth of sights and beautiful scenery – for example, the beautiful Sakskøbing Fjord or the popular Knuthenborg Safari Park. Staying cyclists are offered secure bicycle storage and a comfortable bed, while passing cyclists can drop in for a delicious lunch or a quick drink.

The secret courtyard Whether or not you are a guest at the hotel, the doors are open to the hotel’s idyllic old courtyard. It is shielded by the hotel’s beautiful half-timbered facades and paved with thousands of old stones. Here you can relax surrounded by newly planted apple trees and green herb beds which contribute to the open-air cosiness and the excellent taste of our lunch and dinner menus. You can also enjoy the pride of the region – a local beer brewed at the nearby Krenkerup Estate. We would be delighted to tell you all about the hotel’s many quirky details and its interesting past.

Host your event or next meeting When we plan events at Hotel Saxkjøbing, the focus is on you. Together we can provide a tailor-made event that matches your wishes and needs. We have rooms suitable for groups of four to 150 people. From the moment you enter through the old front door, we will make every effort to give you and your guests the best day possible. Welcome to a small hotel with a big personality and plenty of presence.

The Golf & Fun Park in Marielyst is a wonderland of fun activities where time simply flies. The whole family can get out and be active while playing and enjoying themselves. Golf in all its forms At the Golf & Fun Park, you can play all sorts of variations of golf, and not all of them are played at a club: Adventure minigolf on a fabulous course with lakes and streams, football golf, frisbee golf, handball golf and, not least, the covered driving range, where you can hit balls at 100 kilometres an hour. The scenic course used for football, frisbee and handball golf is 2 kilometres long, making it the longest in Denmark. Park golf A park golf course looks like an ordinary 9-hole golf course, only in miniature. It has all the traditional elements of a golf course: Tee, fairway, rough, bunker, and so on. But the lanes are substantially shorter, you use the same club for every shot, and the ball is larger than in regular golf.

Bumper ball football, baseball cage and Segways Ever tried playing football wearing an inflatable bumper ball? It means you can bump into your friends and roll around the pitch. It is completely safe and great fun! You can take a turn in a baseball cage and thump balls at up to 105 kilometres an hour. You can also play football pool or have a fun ride on a Segway. And for younger children… For younger children, the Golf & Fun Park has a great ‘western town’ with gold-digging, a fabulous playground, trampolines, bumper-boats and electric cars. When you’ve had your fill of fun, it’s time for some refreshment in the shade of the covered terrace and garden, where you can buy an ice cream and a drink. Alternatively, you can enjoy your own food and make use of the site’s barbecues. The Golf & Fun Park is always the right place for a terrific day out. MARIELYST GOKART & PAINTBALL CENTRE The playground for those who never grow up. Marielyst Gokart and Paintball Centre is for those who love speed and excitement. The adrenaline gets pumping and you forget time... it will be a fun day of karting, paintball, bowtag and bumperz! Go karts for old and young speed lovers Speed, excitement and sharp turns! The big go kart track is 390 metres long, and away from the numerous sharp curves, speeds can reach up to 65 kilometres an hour. The speeds are high, but so is the level of safety! Children under 14 have their own track with their own go karts, while kids up to 7 years can take a ride on the electric mini-cars. Go to war with paintball and bowtag The adrenaline gets pumping quickly on the paintball course. You set off with loaded paintball guns, but not without professional guidance and the appropriate safety equipment. Then you decide on a

tactic that might make you the last survivor. The minimum age for paintball is 16 years. Bowtag is played the same way, but instead of paintball guns, the players have a bow and arrows with foam pads at the tip. There are three different courses for paintball and bowtag spread over 11,000 m2. You can also try out the fun bumperz, where you play football while you and your teammates are each inside your own giant inflatable ball. The ultimate playground for those who’ll never grow up! Want to see wild horses and beautiful butterflies, such as the rare Sooty Copper? Visit Bøtø Forest The forest is home to wild Konik horses and Galloway Highland cattle. The animals stay outside all year and are not fed but must make do with what the forest can provide. These animals are the caretakers here – by grazing, they ensure that the area does not turn into a dense forest. The forest is one of the best places to see different kinds of bats and rare butterflies and abundant wildlife, including the white-tailed eagle. The forest spans 153 hectares and is located next to the Baltic Sea, immediately south of the Marielyst-Bøtø area. There are cycling and hiking trails in the woods with wooden paths across the wettest stretches, as well as toilets, picnic tables and benches. There is a dog-friendly forest right next to Bøtø Forest. You can take your dog into Bøtø Forest, but it must be kept on a short leash out of consideration for the grazing animals. Bøtø Forest borders the Bøtø Nor Bird Sanctuary, where there are views across the sanctuary from two birdwatching towers. The day-to-day administration of the forest is managed by the Guldborgsund Municipality ranger - read more on www.rundtinaturlandet.dk and on the Naturlandet Lolland-Falster app.

Marielyst Tourist Information is also happy to provide inspiration for other activities. See more at www.marielyst.dk New jetty The city council of Guldborgsund Municipality decided to establish a jetty on the beach in extension of the Strandstrøget shopping street. The jetty will add a new experience to the beach and sea. The jetty and its connection to the Strandstrøget shopping street will also improve accessibility to the water for the disabled. The jetty is a political decision which, at the time of writing, has not yet been processed, so the plans are still a conceptual design.

GEDESBY BEACH Child-friendly sandy beach with shallow and calm water.

GEDESBY BEACH, BIRKEMOSE AND KROGHAGE Just north of Gedser Odde, Denmark’s southernmost point, lies Gedesby Strand and about 1000 summer houses. The area is recreational and peaceful, and is especially suitable for families with children and adults who want peace and quiet to enjoy nature. You’ll find wonderful, white, wide sandy beaches with perfect swimming conditions, where children and adults can splash about in the water and enjoy the beach and dunes. The area has a pizzeria and a bakery which is open in the summer. For shops and eateries, head to Gedser. There are also many attractions and small museums that are definitely worth a visit. And you can also enjoy a coffee after a visit to Gedesby Windmill.

Continuing further north, past Bøtø Forest, you come to Bøtø and Marielyst. If you are an angler, Birkemose Beach, which is a little further south, is a good spot to try your luck. There are good chances of getting something on your hook here. On the west side you will find Kroghage, where the unique fauna and the beautiful trails through the countryside are also worth a visit. Here you will find a picnic area where you can enjoy views of the marina, the Nysted Wind Farm and the seals at the Rødsand seal sanctuary. On the north side of the marina you can swim from the designated jetty.

SOUTHERNMOST POINT MIN LANDSBY Download the app Min Landsby (My Village), find Gedser, and explore the fascinating places and events.

It is impossible not to have respect for the power of nature when standing at Gedser Odde with the wind blowing while the large Baltic Sea waves crash on the shore and erode the clay cliffs.

The Marine Station The tip of the spit marks Denmark’s and Scandinavia’s southernmost point. Here you will find the ‘Marine Station’ which offers information about the history, geology, nature and the wind farm at Rødsand. From May to September the building is home to various art exhibitions and every year it hosts a friendship exhibition with Rostock. The building dates from a former military installation from the Cold War period. Here you will also find Sydstenen (the South Stone), a four-tonne boulder which was brought to Denmark with the ice during the last Ice Age, about 15,000 years ago.

30

VisitLolland-Falster.com

Rich bird life The area is rich in bird life, and you might see birds such as eider ducks hunting for clams in the shallow water. In spring or autumn you can see thousands of migratory birds, since the spit is located on the birds’ main route. Take a walk along the water’s edge and see what washes up. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to find amber and fossils – or spot a seal. In the footsteps of the Olsen Gang Gedser’s newest attraction is the Yellow Mansion, formerly the signal box at Copenhagen Goods Yard but best known from the 1975 Danish comedy The Olsen Gang on the Track. Since

2017, the Gedser Depot railway museum has taken good care of it, and they are inviting visitors in to take a look back at both railway and film history. Here you will find out all about the golden age of railway and get an up-close look at the old carriages. On the trail of the past In the town of Gedser you will find the Black Geomuseum, which invites you to explore the exciting tracks of prehistoric animals. Here you can explore fossils and amber from Gedser Odde and enjoy beautiful minerals and fossils from around the world. A visit here is a journey through the evolution of life on our planet.

Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to find amber and fossils - or spot a seal Café plus more Have lunch at Toldcaféen – a cosy retro experience with good food. Enjoy a locally brewed beer with a delicious open sandwich in the little square in front of the cafe in the company of the Olsen Gang. The cafe also offers activities such as Viking games, boules and tetherball. You can also rent bikes at Toldcaféen and experience the local nature and history from a bike saddle. Accommodation close to nature Gedser Nature Centre is an ideal place to stay for nature lovers. The area invites you to enjoy walking or cycling on the small paths. You can play softball on the lawn or enjoy the tranquillity of the sea to the sound of the diverse birdlife. You can spend the night in one of the shelters, in your own tent on the campsite or in a rented room in the old Nature School. Historic village idyll South Falster’s oldest village, Gedesby, exudes a sense of village idyll and history. The village was first mentioned in 1135, and it is said that Tsar Peter the Great landed at what was then Rostock Ferry Port. Gedesby Mill is a Dutch mill dating back more than 100 years. It is beautifully situated on the approach road to Gedesby and is definitely worth a visit. A meal with a view Restaurant Najaden is located at Gedser’s charming marina and offers a view of Guldborgsund. The cuisine is varied, with a nice combination of modern and traditional. Enjoy a creamy fish soup with prawns, fennel and Pernod, fresh fish or a good steak. Najaden also brews its own cask beer and serves lunch and dinner, with an evening menu served daily from 18:00 during the season.

With binoculars you can watch for seals, and in clear weather you can see all the way to Nysted, Rostock and the offshore wind farm at Rødsand. Bøtø Nor Old Pumping Station Of cultural and historical importance, the Bøtø Nor pumping station was constructed in 1871 in connection with the formation of the dike along the Baltic Sea and the drainage of the Bøtø Nor area. The pump station is now a working land reclamation museum. Here you can experience the functioning steam engine from 1901, the large-scale landscape model showing how the area was flooded back in 1872, and much more.

TIP

Natural gems are strewn generously across Lolland-Falster. This is a rich and varied landscape with wide meadows, forests and arable land. Here you’ll find breathtaking fjords, lakes and sounds, and plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, riding and sailing in the loveliest nature. Go on a bike ride along the Maribo Lakes, sail on the Mail Boat in Nakskov Fjord, walk or ride a horse through the forest or in the many other scenic areas. The possibilities are many, and if you download the app ‘Naturlandet LollandFalster’ you can get inspiration for many walks in nature. It can even help you navigate. There are so many beautiful places here Anna-Marie Volquartz lives on Falster and has always loved to get out into nature: “Getting out into nature is an experience for all the senses, and Lolland-Falster has so much to offer. It’s so beautiful here. Walking or cycling for long stretches provides peace of mind. It’s about relaxation and contemplation, smelling the fragrance of the forest floor and hearing the birds sing. We walk a lot, and in the summer we cycle. I love walking in the forest when the anemones are in bloom, and every year we go out to Albuen near Nakskov Fjord. We often go for a hike in Hyllekrog on South Lolland where we look for the European green toad.”

An app with options Anna-Marie has become a frequent user of the ‘Naturlandet Lolland-Falster’ app.

Download the app Naturlandet Lolland-Falster and get inspiration for trips and experiences in nature. Once you’ve downloaded the app to your phone, all information can be accessed so you can use it even if the connection is slow. You can bike, hike, ride or kayak/canoe using the routes in the app, and there are suggestions for what you can experience along the way. The routes are easy to follow via the maps in the app, and if you use the filter you can choose to see various facilities such as accommodation, restaurants, attractions and more. Download the app in the App Store or Google Play.

“It’s a great app because you can read about the places, and there are many good ideas for trips. I often use it for inspiration and to look for trips we haven’t taken yet. When we have guests, we look for nearby trips that are both historic and offer something interesting to see. For example, if you want to see the Dodecalith, you can continue south a little and see the ruins of the big Ravnsborg hillfort.” Plenty of pleasant walks Anna-Marie Volquartz has several recommendations for those who want to experience nature in the area. “I’ve been going to the Corselitze Forest on Falster since I was a child. You can see the Valdemar oak here, which is 550 years old and Denmark’s largest tree. “There is also Horreby Lyng, a raised bog with amazing flora and fauna. Or Halsskov

Vænge with the 5,500-year-old dolmens in the middle of the forest. If you are near Fuglsang Art Museum, you can walk out to Skejten, a pristine area that has never been cultivated. The oak trees are so beautiful, and you might also come across rare plants.” See all the options for yourself in the ‘Naturlandet Lolland-Falster’ app – and get closer to nature.

CAMPING HOLIDAYS ON LOLLAND-FALSTER

TIME TO ENJOY LIFE

You sit close together around the camping table and tell each other about the day’s adventures. The air is full of laughs and the smell of cooking, and your neighbour nods and gives you a big smile. When the weather permits, you can visit some of Lolland-Falster’s attractions such as Knuthenborg Safari Park or the seaside resort of Marielyst. When it rains, snuggle up together under the blankets, get the cards out for a game and listen to the rain drumming on the caravan roof. A camping holiday on Lolland-Falster provides ample opportunity for family time, relaxation and good experiences. We invited three Zealand families on camping holidays under the theme of ‘Lolland-Falster for beginners’. Here’s what they said about their first camping holidays on Lolland-Falster:

HEIDI KISS - ISHØJ “Of course we went out and experienced Lolland-Falster’s attractions, but we also spent a lot of time just enjoying life at the campsite. It was wonderful to have time to relax, play cards and do things together.”

HENRIETTE NGUYEN - GILLELEJE HENRIETTE NGUYEN AND FAMILY

“The campsite was very nice and safe. On charter holidays, mum and dad always have to accompany the kids everywhere, but here our children could run around freely. And that meant lots of parent time, and time to chat with the other campers, who were very nice and talkative.”

DIDDE STAALAGER - HOLBÆK “We chose to spend time on small trips rather than the major attractions, and our trips to places like Nakskov, Crocodile Zoo and Femø confirmed our view that Lolland-Falster has lots of different experiences to offer.”

THE EARTH’S BEST FOOD FROM THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDS

A GOOD TIP

TOUR Visit the many local producers on Lolland-Falster and taste to your heart’s content. They are all keen to show off their produce, and many also offer tours. Read more under the “LOCAL TASTE EXPERIENCES” tab on www.visitlolland-falster.com

If there is one thing we take pride in on Lolland-Falster, it is our produce. Just take our Fejø apples or fine cherry wine. But what is the secret behind the great flavours you will find everywhere on Lolland-Falster? Our favourable climate and, in particular, our topsoil. The truth is, you have to search far and wide to

find better soil than the soil we have here on the South Sea Islands. And that is something you can taste. That is why we proudly speak of #jordensbedste – the Earth’s best produce from LollandFalster. That might sound like an overstatement, but we take pride in the fact that it is not.

FACTS Lolland-Falster is known for its amazing food, but the mild climate of the South Sea Islands also makes it ideal for producing beer and wine. Frederiksdal Kirsebærvine winery, Krenkerup Brewery and Østergaard Vinmageri winery are all known for their high quality and great tastes. Local beers and wines can be purchased in many shops and speciality shops, but it’s also a great experience to visit the actual sites.

DRINK LOCAL QUALITY

A DROP OF LOLLAND-FALSTER Frederiksdal Kirsebærvin – a special experience The Frederiksdal winery produces cherry wine like no one else! Small, black Stevns cherries are the backbone of production. These enjoy optimal growing conditions at Frederiksdal – and you can taste it! It’s not only Danes who have become aware of Frederiksdal’s unique cherry wine. It is exported to China, the US and a number of European countries. Frederiksdal Estate is Scandinavia’s largest winery, and most definitely worth a visit. The estate’s history goes back to 1305, and on a tour of the winery you can see the special production methods and taste their wine from the barrels. www.frederiksdal.com

VisitLolland-Falster.com

Krenkerup – beer from farm to glass As part of the historic Krenkerup Estate, Lolland’s Krenkerup Brewery is surrounded by yellow fields and green woods. In 2018, Krenkerup’s stout was voted Best European Stout, and the brewery grows its own grain to ensure that the beer is brewed from pure, high-quality ingredients.

Østergaard Vinmageri – the earth’s best wines Østergaard’s wines are hand-crafted special wines, shaped by the fine Lolland soil. The good soil and mild climate grow some of Denmark’s best fruits and berries. The winemaker brings out the best of the soil’s qualities in the wines, so it is no exaggeration to call these the earth’s best wines.

At Krenkerup Eatery you can enjoy a freshly brewed beer in the estate’s beautiful granary, overlooking the brewery.

Østergaard Vinmageri produces white and rosé wines of high quality, and is also acclaimed for its exciting fruit wines.

Krenkerup Brewery also offers guided tours where you can learn how Krenkerup brews according to the Reinheitsgebot – a unique brewing method which imposes strict demands of pure raw materials and no use of additives and preservatives.

A visit to the vineyard (near Stokkemarke) and a tour give great insight into how the wine is produced – and of course there are tastings.

THE SUCCESS CONTINUES FOR

THE NYKØBING FALSTER REVUE The Revue was inundated with Danish awards last year: ‘Revue of the Year 2019’, ‘Honorary Artist 2019’ for the former revue director Flemming Krøll and ‘Funny Man of the Year’ for actor Henrik Koefoed. The reviewers were also enthusiastic about Denmark’s second largest revue. Jyllandsposten newspaper gave it five stars and wrote: “the Revue is a highly professional and well-executed revue” and Politiken newspaper gave it five hearts and called the Revue “enthusiastic, witty and daring”.

The generational change in the revue has been a success and the good cooperation between outgoing director Flemming Krøll and new director Mickey Pless will continue in style with the 2020 Revue. Henrik Lykkegaard, Pernille Schroeder, Julie Steincke, Kristian Boland, Kasper Gattrup, Mickey Pless and the revue orchestra will provide singing and dancing in perfect combination with social satire and hilarious skits on stage in the Nykøbing F. Theatre.

With 30,000 audience members, the Nykøbing Falster Revue is one of Lolland-Falster’s biggest attractions.

Flemming Krøll is still in the wings and will serve as revue producer again this year.

TIP The Nykøbing Falster Revue will run at the Nykøbing F. Theatre from 11 June to 22 August. Find out more at www.nyk-revy.dk

The monkeys are swinging in the treetops while the Siberian tiger Luna keeps watch from her cage. Get close to wild animals and have a fun day with the whole family at Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Garden. It will be wildly wonderful!

#visitlollandfalster

STEP INTO A WORLD OF WILD ANIMALS Knud and Mona, the capuchin monkeys, sit perfectly still and look at today’s visitors. Soon they’re hopping around, jumping comically from branch to branch. The armadillos are more concerned with burrowing underground and looking for interesting insects. And in the meerkat enclosure, the guard keeps an eye out while the rest of the clan digs holes and enjoys life. On tour in Asia and the rainforest At Guldborgsund Zoo & Botanical Garden you can get close to the animal world. The garden is divided into different areas where you can experience the animals in what is as close as possible to their natural habitats. In the Asian enclosure, the Asian small-clawed otters lounge on the rocks with all eyes fixed on the zookeeper, who brings them buckets of delicious mussels. Ib the turkey vulture circles overhead, high up in the air. In the squirrel monkeys’ area it’s full speed ahead – the monkeys are very curious and full of mischief. They examine nature, each other and the visitors with great interest. The rain forest is very humid and buzzing with life, both in the treetops and on the forest floor. High up in the treetops, the rhinoceros hornbills sing while the small cotton-top tamarins clamber around. Deep down on the forest floor, giant tortoises roam while tropical birds chirp. Suddenly you are face to face with one of the free-living monkeys swinging between the trees. The erupting volcano Outside, you can climb our volcano and see it erupt. At the top of the volcano, you get a beautiful view across the zoo lake. In the big Dino sandbox you can dig up large fossils or build huge sand castles. In the Dino Garden you can balance on footpaths between rippling waters and explore the climbing course, which runs through ferns and giant horsetail. But beware of the ferocious dinosaur who keeps watch! Fun playgrounds and relaxation The playful monkeys are not the only ones who are allowed to climb around. In the Nature Playground you can challenge your inner monkey on the large obstacle course, which has climbing towers and a zipline. There is plenty of space to enjoy your picnic or a good cup of coffee from our café, which is open during the summer. The zoo also offers a number of fun family games which are free and enjoyable for everyone. Experiences to cherish In the Petting Zoo, children can pet a mountain goat and the cute ponies. Even the stubborn donkeys can’t resist the attention and want to be petted. And in the reindeer enclosure, Rudolf likes to come over to greet the visitors. In Guldborgsund Zoo & Botanical Garden, you can make precious memories with the whole family. A day at the zoo is wild fun for the whole family!

VisitLolland-Falster.com

Go on a journey through time As you enter through the gates of Sundkøbing, you begin a journey back in time to the year 1410. You stand in the middle of the village street, where you can hear the blacksmith hammering and a cock crowing, smell the bonfire smoke and watch the local women sell their wares in the square. Talk to the townspeople to hear about their lives and how they see the world. Medieval tournaments and war machines The immense medieval war machines are an experience in themselves. You can see the world’s oldest and probably biggest in-action trebuchet – it can throw stones, dead animals, or even human bodies up to 300 metres! And you won’t want to miss the spectacular jousting tournament, where the town’s knight, Sir Henrik Svane, invites foreign knights to compete for glory and fame.

Future Technological Wonders See, try and discover some of the great inventions of the Middle Ages, such as the world’s first car, the elevator and the machine of perpetual motion. At the Technology Park you can test a range of medieval technological marvels in full size – even the ones that never really caught on because they didn’t work as intended. Medieval Magical Creatures In the Magical Forest you can experience some of the supernatural beings of the Middle Ages. Meet the werewolf, the vampire, or the Nix, who takes little children. Many creatures live in the Magical Forest, so come and visit them... if you dare! Eat how they did in the Middle Ages You can combine the trip with a visit to the guesthouse Den Gyldne Svane (the Golden Swan), which serves genuine medieval food. The inn is decorated with an open fireplace, a servants’ hall with wooden benches and tables, and Knight Svane’s grand banqueting hall.

The picturesque little town amazes most visitors with its narrow, winding streets, idyllic houses and atmospheric harbour. The countryside around Nysted Nysted is located at the head of Nysted Cove – a beautiful natural harbour on Lolland’s southern shores. The area is a Ramsar & Natura 2000 area with rich bird, animal and plant life which is best enjoyed on foot or by bike. There are numerous cycle routes and walking trails in the woods, along the coast or around the town. At the entrance to the cove is the redoubt system and Nysted Beach – a lovely park area perfect for families who want to get out and enjoy the countryside and the water. The beach is a child-friendly sandy beach. Associations Although Nysted is an old town – with a municipal charter dating back to 1409 – and a long-time trading and shipping centre surrounded by large farms, we are proud to say that today Nysted is also a modern town with an active and vibrant business community as well as associations and enthusiasts working

to promote the area and manage the many activities that are to be found. Particularly worthy of mention are Nysted Enterprise and Tourism Association (commonly known as NET; see www.visitnysted. dk) and Nysted and Surrounding Area Joint Council (commonly known as NOF; see www. nysted.dk). Shopping options The old market town has grocery shops, florists, cycle and moped shops, petrol stations, antique and second-hand shops, a vet, a hairdresser, a chemist, a library, an estate agent, a hunting & fishing shop and an animal feed shop, as well as a baker, butcher and smokehouse. At Nysted Butcher’s, you can buy meat that is produced locally. If you want personal service combined with great food, the shop is definitely worth a visit. At Nysted Butcher’s, you will find both wellhung, hook-matured meat for the barbecue and sausages and salt-cured ham from our own sausage-maker.

HAJKUTTER REGATTA (THE SHARK CUTTER REGATTA) 1–4 AUGUST

History & Culture Nysted is a shining example of a town: Denmark’s southernmost and smallest market town with an exciting, beautiful and well-preserved urban environment that reflects centuries of history and activities. At Nysted’s Old Town Hall, the carillon plays tunes every hour on the hour – often seasonal ones. The carillon was donated by the former mayor Børge Lund Thomsen in 1987 and was created by watchmaker and conservator Søren Andersen, who is perhaps best known for having reconstructed Rømer’s Jupiter machine. Today the Town Hall is used for hosting exhibitions. At Adelgade 80 is Emil Aarestrup’s house, a museum of memorabilia belonging to the physician and poet who lived in this house with his family from 1827–1838. For further information, visit www.aarestrup-foreningen. dk. Nysted is also known for its unique event Hajkutter Regatta (the Shark Cutter Regatta), which features beautiful old wooden ships while spectators are entertained with live music and dancing and delicious food is served in tent taverns on the pier especially for the occasion. There are also plenty of children’s activities of various kinds. The event takes place every year in early August.

THE ORGAN MUSEUM

Another summer activity is Nysted Seal Safari, which offers daily boat trips on the DROST in July and August, and the little seal museum, which is located close to the pier in the former tool and smokehouse, the base for the work of the Landt seal-catcher brothers up to the end of the twentieth century. At Adelgade 30 you’ll find Denmark’s only organ museum – a private collection of historical mechanical church organs from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The museum’s aim is to promote the understanding and joy of listening to beautiful organ music which is typical of its time. There is unique opportunity to admire classic craftsmanship from an era of attention to detail, as well as to see, hear, and especially try a variety of Danish village organs in beautiful surroundings – this is truly a hands-on museum. The museum offers concerts, organ lessons, exhibitions and tours where children and adults can see, touch and try playing the organs. lishments covering everything from hot-dog stands, kiosks and pizzerias to gourmet restaurants. As well as the city hotel, Hotel Nysted Harbour, there is also The Cottage, a half-timbered idyllic restaurant and hotel on the outskirts of Nysted alongside Nysted Beach Camping. The Cottage is great for both families and couples. The beautiful garden provides plenty of space and play opportunities for children, while adults can enjoy their holiday from the terrace. Furthermore, just a 5-minute drive from Nysted, close to the wood and beach in the small fishing village of Stubberup, Den Gamle Gaard Holiday Centre offers 55 holiday apartments as well as function and conference facilities. From Nysted Harbour, there is a cycle path that runs past the old medieval castle of Aalholm, through woods and fields, directly to Stubberup. Coastle apartments New six-person 100 m2 holiday apartments situated in the historic pavilion overlooking Nysted Beach and the Baltic Sea. MARIBO – ALWAYS WORTH A VISIT...

DIVINE BY NATURE The monastery town of Maribo is an active commercial centre, which offers plenty of culture, history and nature. Maribo Lakes Nature Park is literally a part of the town.

RICH IN HISTORY

Beautiful lakes, abundant wildlife and picturesque scenery. Maribo Lakes Nature Park has it all. The lakes are located in a magnificent landscape within walking distance of the town, and there are spectacular outdoor experiences waiting for you there, whether you have come to study the fascinating bird life, take a guided tour on the boat Anemonen, or simply enjoy the peaceful nature.

Maribo has a rich history dating back to the 15th century’s monasteries, and therefore, the cathedral is also a natural starting point for a historical walking tour of the town. On selected days you can walk around with the night watchman, where he will sing verses in the streets like they did in the old days. Museumsbanen takes guests to and from Bandholm on Denmark’s oldest running steam locomotive. Maribo County Museum, located right next to Maribo Station, exhibits art and history. Here you can see some of the discoveries made during the excavations of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link.

EVERYTHING IS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE

Kaj Munk wrote this about his home town: “It is possible that there are just as beautiful places in the world, but there are none more beautiful than Maribo.” When visiting the town, you will find that nature, trade, culture and experiences are closely linked and within walking distance... but allow plenty of time. The tourist office can recommend activities and experiences.

LEONORA CHRISTINA The story of Leonora Christina Ulfeldt, Christian IV’s daughter, is an important part of the history of Denmark, but she is also part of Maribo’s history. In the final years of her life, the princess lived at the monastery in Maribo. Visit Maribo Cathedral and feel the presence of history at the Maribo monastery ruins. The monastery was founded by the Bridgettine Order, and Bridgettine nuns still live in the town. They run a retreat close to nature, where you can rent a room for short or long periods.

About 150 years ago, the railway between Maribo and Bandholm opened. It was Lolland’s first railway, and it established a better connection between the market town in the middle of Lolland and Knuthenborg’s harbour in Bandholm. Since 1962, vintage trains have run here with various locomotives and rail cars from Danish private railways. And tourists can still experience the atmosphere of a journey between Maribo and Bandholm. Vintage trains run during the summer season and sitting in the old passenger cars, watching the landscape glide past accompanied by the smell of coal smoke and the sound of the steam whistle, and arriving at the original station in Bandholm is an all-encompassing experience. Don’t forget to get off the train and check out the activities and exhibits at the station. More info and timetable on www.museumsbanen.dk

STEP INTO

THE WORLD OF YESTERYEAR Step into the world of yesteryear as Museum Lolland-Falster brings the Stone Age to life in a major new exhibition. Discover the past You step out of the time machine and find yourself standing in the middle of the Stone Age jungle. Birds are singing. Animals rustle in the undergrowth. You can hear the sound of people nearby. It actually seems that they were just here, exactly where you’re standing. Their tools are still lying on the ground around you. You breathe deeply, feel the bonfire smoke tickle your nose, and continue along the path through the woods toward the settlement. You find yourself in southern Lolland approximately 5,000 years ago. Around this time, one of the biggest and most important changes in our history took place: We went from being hunters to becoming farmers. It was a time of great change. Old ways of life, traditions and customs gave way to a new lifestyle, new ideas, new people.

New exhibition From 20 June at the Diocesan Museum in Maribo, you’ll be invited into the world of yesteryear as Museum Lolland-Falster opens the most ambitious exhibition in the museum’s history: They will bring the Stone Age to life. You follow Lola, a Stone Age woman, on a journey through the Stone Age life and landscape as it may have looked like on Lolland’s south coast some 5,000 years ago. “Lola is one of the last hunter-gatherers on Lolland, but she is also standing in the middle of all that is new,” says curator Marie Brinch, “On the one hand, she lives traditionally, on the other, her people have already adopted new ways. It’s an extremely interesting issue that draws comparisons to our present day, where we are likewise living in a changing world. How did they deal with these changes in the Stone Age? How do we deal with them today?”

THE PAST SEEN WITH NEW EYES The exhibition presents a unique collection of finds which were excavated at the major archaeological sites near Rødbyhavn. The excavations are taking place in advance of the construction of the new fixed tunnel link between Denmark and Germany. But when you visit Museum Lolland-Falster’s new exhibition, don’t expect anything you have ever seen before. ‘We are breaking up the whole museum space and building an entire world,’ says Marie Brinch. ‘It will be a sensory universe where sound and light become part of the story along with the amazing objects – we promise it will be fantastic!’

POST BOAT The wide, white boat with the Danish flag flying at the stern does not at first glance look like a time machine. However, after less than half an hour on the Post Boat you will be back in the Middle Ages on Slotø, where King Hans built the fortified shipyard of Engelsborg in 1509. Both King Hans and Christian IV used the island and the shipyard to build some of the world’s largest ships of their time. In the footsteps of a polar researcher The Post Boat continues its journey through time and docks at Enehøje, which was home to some of the first people who came to Denmark. The polar researcher Peter Freuchen lived on the island from 1926 to 1940. Here, he sat in “The Blue

Smithy” editing the magazine “Ude og Hjemme” and writing his books. On the island of Albuen is a medieval herring market, a pilot’s house, a lighthouse and fishermen’s houses. Trips on the Post Boat You can take a trip back in time on the Post Boat throughout the summer. Choose between the small island tour lasting 2 hours, the mail trip or the island hopper lasting 3.5 hours. THE DODECALITH Kragenæsvej 62 DK-4943 Lolland www.dodekalit.dk

DODEKALITTEN

ART UNDER AN OPEN SKY

The word DODECALITH is Greek and means twelve stones. The finished artwork will consist of 12 stone figures carved from granite, 7–9 metres high, each weighing 25 to 45 tons.

72

VisitLolland-Falster.com

The figures’ uppermost two metres are sculpted in the shape of heads, all facing inwards towards the centre of a circle which is approx. 40 metres in diameter. The sculptor is Thomas Kadziola. The Dodecalith is located in ‘The Lolland Alps’ on hills overlooking the Smålandshavet archipelago, the passage grave ‘Glentehøj’ and three other burial mounds from the Bronze Age. Between the figures are natural “sitting” stones from which electro-acoustic music, specially created by composer Wayne Siegel, is played every day of the year during the daytime. In style and execution the twelve stones refer back in time, and along with the contemporary, innovative

and forward-looking music, they act as an artistic whole. While the stones will stand unchanged through time, positioned on an axis pointing to the North Star, the music will constantly change, as it is generated from the sun, moon and earth’s positions relative to each other. The multi-ton granite blocks were sourced in Sweden and transported to Lolland in one piece, where the faces were carved out using a hammer and chisel. Thomas Kadziola has so far sculpted five faces, but the fact that the process is taking many years to complete doesn’t matter much when you know that the Dodecalith may stand for a thousand years.

NATURE, SUSTAINABILITY AND SELF-INDULGENCE

DANISH ISLAND HOLIDAY ON VEJRØ The blue waters of Smålandshavet on all sides. With satisfied grunts, a pack of higher-welfare pigs roots around in the soil. Architect-designed greenhouses keep the island self-sufficient with organic vegetables, fruits and berries. Vejrø is nature, sustainability and self-indulgence. Here, you can take long walks on the beach or in the fields, where you’ll meet scattering pheasants and watchful deer. The wide open spaces and beautiful greenhouses surround you with greenery and the fragrance of flowers and herbs. Enjoy a pleasant moment in the harbour and watch the sailing boats as they come ashore. Getting to Vejrø The holiday begins on the boat Vejrø III, which sails between Kragenæs (Lolland) and Vejrø. The journey to Vejrø is an experience in itself, and the marina’s outstretched arms embrace the boat like a welcoming host. You can also sail to Vejrø in your own boat and moor at the modern marina, which has all amenities, a pirate play ship and a rabbit mountain for the children.

Invite your family, friends or special someone You can spend a holiday on Vejrø in many different ways. Book a deluxe room at Hotel Blæsenborg, a modern room with its own access to the terrace in Karlekammeret, or book an entire house with friends and enjoy good company. Cook your meals using local produce or allow yourself to be pampered at Vejrø’s restaurant Gather the generations of your family and enjoy yourselves on the large terraces overlooking the golden meadows and the blue sea. Or go for a couples’ getaway of tranquillity and pampering, sustainable gourmet meals and a crackling fire in the fireplace.

Green energy and field-to-fork food Our sustainable farming supplies much of the island’s produce and specialities, directly from field to fork. For example, try the organic pork or lamb with seasonal vegetables at Restaurant Skipperly. In the farm shop you will find a small selection of jams, cold cuts, apple juice and vegetables. Vejrø’s green focus is ubiquitous: Wind turbines, solar cells and batteries for storing energy keep Vejrø self-sufficient in renewable energy, and the island serves as a test centre for the latest technology in the field.

You can feel it as soon as you start sailing on the ferry... you begin to relax and feel that you’re heading into a miniature paradise of tranquillity and enjoyment. The biggest attractions on the islands of the Småland Sea are free – the peace and quiet, the big skies and the beautiful scenery. The beaches are family-friendly and the water is warm. This is a place where everyone says hello to each other – there is togetherness and intimacy and time to enjoy life, nature and human company.

Fejø – fruit and good experiences

Fejø is a small, diverse local community where you will find the farmhouses, tractors and idyll of bygone days alongside a lively community with modern agriculture, small businesses and an engaging local population. The island is known for its fruit-growing, with world-class apples, pears and plums in particular, but also figs, almonds and mulberries. The well-stocked grocery store makes it easy to be a tourist on Fejø, but you can also visit the island’s producers, who make delicious jams, apple juice and honey which can be purchased at little roadside stalls and farm shops. Drop into Fejø Cider, for example,

and taste their amazing products. You can also spend time on outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, fishing, cycling, and of course, swimming at the beach. Visit the Healing Garden, where Fejø’s eco-tourism attracts guests with shelter accommodation and meals cooked over an open fire. You should also visit Fejø Mill, which serves as a tourist information centre and café, and you’ll also want to stop by the island’s other eateries.

Femø – where the sky kisses the earth

The first thing you encounter on Femø is the well-maintained harbour, which is visited by approx. 3,000 boats every year. At the harbour you will find the harbour office with some tourist information, an ice cream shop and a grocery store, bike rental and diesel for sale. Here you will also find the blue-flag beach. Femø is especially known for its women’s camp and Femø Jazz Festival. Femø Inn offers delicious food, good conference facilities and has 24 double rooms. If you call in advance, someone from

Askø-Lilleø – oozing island charm

In spite of its small size, Askø has it all. It has views of fields, beaches and exciting wading birds on the expansive salt marshes. It has charm, community and light, and the island is at its most beautiful when the apple trees are in blossom. Askø is connected by a narrow dike to Lilleø, where you will also find the large apple, pear, peach, plum and wine plantations. The harbour has a working harbour house where you can rent bikes to cycle around on the two islands or kayaks to enjoy them from the sea. You can also book a guided cycling tour on which you will hear fabulous stories about the island. In the small grocery store, the volunteer staff will tempt you with apple juice, coffee and cake as well as everyday groceries. Don’t miss Askø Museum and the small church with the Gothic warship chancel, and the island also offers beautiful galleries and roadside stalls. Askø has a beautiful old summer-house area of 250 properties and a lovely little garden with a playground and pleasant paths – including the ”love path”.

CYCLING HOLIDAYS ON LOLLAND-FALSTER

AN ADVENTURE ON TWO WHEELS

HESNÆS

ABOUT THE BALTIC SEA ROUTE On Lolland-Falster, the route stretches from Taars on West Lolland to Stubbekøbing on East Falster. Along the way you’ll cycle on the South Lolland dike and pass the Maribo Lakes Nature Park, Sakskøbing Fjord and the seaside town of Marielyst.

76

VisitLolland-Falster.com

The sound of gravel crunching beneath your wheels. The feel of the wind in your hair as you speed off. The waves that roll along, racing you, always by your side. The feeling of freedom when you whiz along on your bike. Lolland-Falster’s flat landscape encourages adventures on two wheels, and you can choose from several picturesque routes. The Baltic Sea Route: Manor landscape, fjords and South Denmark island atmosphere

On the Baltic Sea route you cycle along Denmark’s most beautiful fjords, and you can drop by the many small, idyllic islands strewn like gems across the Baltic Sea. The wide open fields, vast forests, avenues, streams and memorial stones line the route, accompanying you on both sides. You cycle across a bridge and arrive in the middle of a charming and cosy community. Or you can take a short break on

the old wooden ferry IDA which sails between Stubbekøbing and Bogø. The Baltic Sea route is one of Denmark’s most popular cycling routes – and for good reason!

Cycling on Lolland-Falster

Elevated forests and steep cliffs that slope down towards the beaches of the Baltic Sea. On the 600 km long cycle route between Copenhagen and Berlin, you can experience East Falster’s beautiful coastal scenery up close. Make a stop at the fishing village at Hesnæs and see the

village’s unique old houses which are wrapped in straw on the walls and on the roof. If you prefer shorter trips, there are still lots of good opportunities for using a bike. For instance, you can cycle along the dike between South Lolland and West Lolland. Or take your bike to go exploring the sights of Lolland-Falster. And if you’re on the lookout for action, try one of the many mountain bike routes and trails.

One of Denmark’s oldest wooden ferries and the only one of its kind that still operates on a fixed route. Sailing on the IDA ferry is an experience in itself as the faithful boat chugs its way through the narrow Grønsund strait, ferrying cyclists and other visitors between Stubbekøbing and Bogø. The ferry operates from May to September from morning to night, and during the Autumn school break/week 42 it is converted into a pirate ship to the delight of the little ones. Since the crossing is the nearest shortcut if you want to get from Bogø or Møn to LollandFalster, the IDA ferry is particularly welcome with cyclists and their bikes. If you travel with DSB with your bike during the high season, remember to book a place for your bike on the train. THE IDA FERRY • Vordingborg.dk/ida

FREDERIK IX BRIDGE

GULDBORGSUNDBROEN BRIDGE

THE BRIDGES ON THE NET

GULDBORGSUND STRAIT WITH BASCULE BRIDGES Sailing in refreshing winds across flat water is good for your self-confidence and sailing pleasure, with some added dopamine bursts along the way. An interesting and beautiful shortcut between the Småland waters and the Western Baltic Sea is Guldborgsund strait, with two ports in Guldborg, three ports in Nykøbing F. and the opportunity to travel west to Denmark’s smallest market town, Nysted, where you will have reached Flinthorne Rev, the southernmost point in the Sound. There are approximately 17 nautical miles between Guldborg and Flinthorne Rev, with Nykøbing F. about halfway. The children or grandchildren won’t get bored along the way. Display shows opening hours For many Danish and foreign sailors, a bascule bridge passage is probably not a familiar undertaking. There are two bascule bridges over the Guldborgsund strait. Near Guldborg and Nykøbing F. On both bridges, a display shows when the bridge will be

opened next if a sailor has requested it by hoisting the signal flag N (chequered, blue and white) at half below starboard spreader. Keep an eye on the signal mast on the bridge. When the red light starts blinking, you can make the boat ready for quick passage. At three fixed red lights, the boats coming from the south can sail through, and at two fixed red lights, boats from the north can pass. Right of way for cargo vessels Guldborgsund strait is also sailed by cargo vessels from the north up to Nykøbing F. Right of way applies unconditionally to both sailing and motorised pleasure boats. South of Frederik IX Bridge in Nykøbing, the water depth has been measured to be around 2.10 meters at mean tide level. The marked channel meanders west and south of Hasselø. Stay in the middle of the trench

between the side markings, and if the sonar sounds the alert for very low depths, it’s usually due to seagrass – unless you have somehow sailed outside the markings. Sailing through the strait on a motorboat or sailboat Sailors seeking comfort and experiences get full value for their effort when the engine brings the skipper and possibly the crew, family and friends through Guldborgsund strait. If you’re a sailor with salt water in your blood, the wind should behave as you sail between the low coasts. If not, it will take a lot of tacking, and for sailors not familiar with the area, also a sharp eye on the sonar and plotter. Sailing in refreshing winds across flat water is good for your selfconfidence and sailing pleasure, with some added dopamine bursts along the way.

EVERYTHING A SAILOR COULD WANT There’s room for everyone in and around the South Sea Islands. The marinas are rarely crowded. The Baltic Sea and Småland waters – with the Guldborgsund and Grønsund straits forming beautiful connections – offer everything a leisure sailor could ask for. Open waters. Fjords and inlets. Idyllic little islands. Small and large ports. There’s room for everyone in and around the South Sea Islands. The marinas are rarely crowded. Sailors from the north generally pass Omø, or go round Langeland’s northern tip at Hov Sand. There is free water toward Vejrø into the Langeland Belt strait, where it is important to keep an eye out for the big freighters. Nakskov Fjord and shelter at ports Nakskov Fjord has good signposting to the marina at Hestehovedet or the guest slips in the old port. Outside the wide mouth of the fjord, Tårs and Langø harbours are sheltered from the wind and waves in bad weather. If the skipper chooses to steer to the east of the Småland waters, Vejrø makes a luxurious stop midway between Lolland and Omø. The waves settle to the south Further south from Vejrø you will probably notice that the waves settle down a bit in brisk weather. Land and reef take the worst of them. On the other hand, the lower depths demand

the routine navigation that all sailors know from most inland waters in Denmark. The rewards await you. Femø, with the area’s most visited port. Fejø, with Dybvig Harbour, is sheltered from almost all winds, and Askø has a clubhouse and all amenities. Onsevig, Kragenæs, Blans and Bandholm ports are easy to sail. Sakskøbing Fjord has an exceptionally rich bird life, and two functioning marinas welcome sailing visitors to the little market town’s rich commercial scene. From the Småland waters, sailing through Storstrømmen strait is yet another varied and beautiful experience, with a view into Gåbense port, south of Farø and into Grønsund. Stubbekøbing’s harbour is for active visitors, with the vintage ferry ”Ida” to Bogø and shopping and restaurants nearby. 20 nautical miles of open sea Sailors who intend to travel south can choose Grønsund strait and the open sea, the Baltic Sea, east of Falster, with about 21 miles between the ports of Hesnæs and Gedser. The Darsser Ort port of distress on Rügen is located approximately 25 nautical miles in a straight line southeast of Hesnæs and approximately 20 nautical miles east of Gedser.

FLEX HOUSING – YOUR SECOND HOME

KIRPPU LOPPESUPERMARKED FLEA MARKET

USE AN ALL-YEAR HOUSE AS A HOLIDAY HOME

MONDAY–FRIDAY 09:30 TO 18:00 SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND PUBLIC HOLIDAYS 10:00 TO 17:00

A flex property is a great alternative to a holiday home. You can use a flex property all year round. It can be a little town house, where you become a part of local life, or a big farm in the country, where you live in natural beauty with no close neighbours. All you need is permission from your municipality. In Vordingborg, Guldborgsund and Lolland Municipality we approve the vast majority of houses as flex housing. Ask your local estate agent about flex housing or read more on www.flexbolig.nu

Kirppu is a paradise for those who love flea markets and buying used items at great prices. All year round you can take your time and browse our large indoor flea supermarkets, finding good pieces. All our products are priced so you don’t have to worry about haggling, but we’re sure you’ll always leave having made a great bargain! It is always there, the beach, and its white sands and blue waters beckon visitors regardless of the season. AUTUMN: Expose yourself to the winds of the autumn months, listening to the sound of the waves and watching waders dip their toes in the waters along the Lolland-Falster coast before departing towards warmer climes. If you look down, you might find a lump of “gold of the sea’’, the golden amber that has been washed up on the beach by the waves. WINTER: Breathe in the crisp air and feel the chill nipping at your cheeks when winter sets in. There is nothing like a brisk walk on the beach to clear the mind and create tranquillity. SPRING: Sea trout and garfish appear in the waters of Lolland-Falster, so with a fishing rod in hand you’re all set for a great day at the beach. Bring a picnic and enjoy your lunch with a view of the horizon and in the warmth of the early spring sunshine. SUMMER: Feel the velvety sand tickle your toes on some of the best beaches in Denmark. The waters of Lolland-Falster are known for warm water and good swimming conditions, and the beaches are welcoming and child-friendly.

THE FEHMARNBELT LINK

We are building the longest immersed tunnel • The Fehmarnbelt tunnel will be 18 kilometers long and comprises a four lane motorway and two electrified rail tracks. • The tunnel will consist of 79 individual elements, each 217 metres long, and 10 special elements with a lower floor for the use of the tunnel operation and maintenance equipment. • A tunnel element weighs 73,000 tonnes. This corresponds to 14,000 elephants. • The amount of steel used in the tunnel is equivalent to about 50 Eiffel Towers. • Up to 3,000 people will be directly employed in building the Fehmarnbelt tunnel. • It will take ten minutes to travel from Denmark to Germany by car and seven minutes by train.
