In 1980, the Mighty Marching Hornets put together a halftime show saluting the late Joe Louis, one of the world’s greatest boxers. This show toured many cities and received rave reviews for each performance.

They also performed at the game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Chicago Bears in 1986, where they presented a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Mighty Marching Hornets were the exhibition band for the South Central Marching Band Classic in Homewood in 1986. The band has performed at other classics and games such as the Bronze Classic in Atlanta (1991), the Motor City Classic in Pontiac, Mich. (1991), the Alamo Heritage Bowl in Miami (1991), the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis (1992), the Battle of the Bands in Mobile (2000) and the Detroit Football Classic (2003).
