Joanne McCarthy Joanne McCarthy is a newspaper journalist with drive and determination that has earned her national acclaim.

A Newcastle Herald journalist for the past 11 years, Ms McCarthy was awarded in March the 2012 Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award for her campaign to uncover the truth about child sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Other previous winners of this prestigious award include some of Australia’s finest journalists, including Laurie Oakes, John Silvester, Paul McGeough, Paul Kelly and Michelle Grattan.

The University Fanfare will herald the entry of the Dais Party

Her work, as part of the Newcastle Herald’s Shine the Light campaign, was instrumental in the federal government’s decision to order a royal commission, as well as the NSW government announcing a special commission of inquiry. Following schooling at St Joseph’s High School and later Henry Kendall High School at East Gosford, where she completed her Higher School Certificate in 1977, Ms McCarthy began training as a nurse at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Leaving prior to completing the full nursing course, Ms McCarthy soon began honing her journalism skills at the free weekly Central Coast newspaper, the Gosford Star in 1980. She later joined the Central Coast Express Advocate during which time she completed a University of Newcastle Open Foundation program in 1996. Uncertain whether she wanted to pursue a law degree, Ms McCarthy completed a second Open Foundation year in 1997 including legal studies. Ms McCarthy later went on to study a Bachelor of Arts degree while working at the Central Coast Express and later the Newcastle Herald, graduating in 2003. Ms McCarthy is the proud mother of three adult sons and in her free time enjoys gardening, endurance running and as one would expect, reading.

The assembly will rise and remain standing until the conclusion of the National Anthem, performed by Ms Kumari Lamotte The Acting Chancellor, Ms Dianne Allen will declare the proceedings open The Newstep students will be presented by the Newstep Coordinator (Ourimbah), Dr David Powter The Acting Chancellor will invite Mr Nicholas McCarthy to speak on behalf of the Newstep students The Open Foundation students will be presented by the Open Foundation Co-ordinator (Ourimbah), Dr David Powter The Acting Chancellor will invite Ms Melissa Salvador to speak on behalf of the Open Foundation students The Musical Interlude will be performed by Ms Kumari Lamotte The Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Caroline McMillen will address the assembly and introduce the Occasional Speaker The Occasional Address will be delivered by Joanne McCarthy The Acting Chancellor will declare the proceedings concluded The Dais Party and assembly will rise as the University Fanfare is sounded and the Dais Party process from the stage The Procession of Recipients will follow the Dais Party out of the Hall
