15000 – UoN Enquiries The team has undergone a bit of change of late. There are now about 62 of us (at last count!) beavering away feverishly to answer basic enquiries for all areas of the uni! Many of our staff are casual, many of them students and they’ve been fantastic! Julija Kitanovski has also returned to work from maternity (big congrats!) and we’ve welcomed Angelie Churchill back into the fold as Administrative Officer until the end of the year to cover Pat Considine who is Acting Team Leader. Apart from answering >40,000 phone and email enquiries since last edition, we’ve been building a new Student Costs Website due to launch very soon (hyperlink is to demo site only!), creating multimedia for SAS (thanks mostly to the most talented Jessica Burden!), improving on our use of AskUoN, contributing to a number of SEEWP projects and pitching in at Grad!
Systems and Projects NUSTAR Landscape Remediation Project - fancy way of saying we are looking at the underlying hardware and environment that NUSTAR sits on, to improve system stability and scalability. This also involves getting NUSTAR up to date with new functionality that has been released since we upgraded to version 9. Look out for more information as the year progresses! Review of NUSTAR enhancement requests : if you have some thoughts or a wishlist for NUSTAR functionality lying around, please dust it off and send it in to nustar@newcastle.edu.au sowe can include it in our forward planning. The major student data submission to DEEWR for 2011 delivered on time at end of May. New NUSTAR Registration Form for requesting access to NUSTAR - cut from four pages down to one! http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/systems-and-projects/nustar/registration.html Online Registrations functionality delivered for enrolments in Semester 2. Online Direct Admissions (ODA) : looking at October for delivering functionality to GradSchool, Research and Enabling. Academic Integrity : investigating how a standardised Academic Integrity Module in Blackboard might automatically trigger a negative service indicator in NUSTAR if students haven't completed the module in their first year of study as per the new policy. Address Validation Project : ensuring student addresses in NUSTAR are valid and conform to Australia Post standards. Should be completed by end of July. Majors & Specialisations Project : looking at delivering functionality in October. 3
Photo Class lists : part of the ID Card project, to deliver the ability for academics to print off class lists that include student photos. On track for delivery by start of Semester 2.

Student Financials & Scholarships We welcome Linda Campbell who has joined us Monday and Thursday in Student Loans and Welfare
role at Central Coast Campus. Mid year equity scholarship applications closed 27 May with approx 300 applications. Notifications and
offers will be made from 28 June. HECS Bills for Trimester 2,2011 were generated 27 May. Upfront payments for HECS-HELP & FEE-HELP
were accepted up until the census date 13 June. Fees matrix for 2012 has received approval from all Faculties. Advice was sent to over 500 indebted international students. This is a much higher number than in
previous years, possibly due to exchange rates and other issues.
Graduation & Prizes Lizette Gamble and Katy Allan were welcomed to the Graduation and Prizes team in the lead up to the
April/May graduation period. Almost 2500 graduates attended the Callaghan graduation ceremonies in April/May. This is a total of 54%
of eligible graduates. Ourimbah graduation was held on Wednesday 29 June 2011. Graduates from TAFE, Community College,
University degree programs and enabling programs attended across 3 ceremonies. AHEGS were provided to graduates at the recent graduation ceremonies. The AHEGS committee will be considering new submissions for inclusion on AHEGS for 2012 in the next
month. 4

Exams & Timetabling Exams New Exams Management System Thank you for your patience while we trialled our new exams management system for the Semester 1 exams. We experienced the odd hiccup but you were all patient enough that we were able to sort out any issues. We will be asking for your feedback on the process when the semester 1 exam period is over. Timetabling Timetable Project Room Audit - the University conducted a room audit to clarify room usage on the Callaghan, Ourimbah and City campuses during the week of the 23 June. We are expecting to receive the initial report from the Auditors soon. The report will be sent to Faculty’s and School’s for comment. Timetabling Consultant – Professor Alan Lindsay was engaged by the University to consult on the University’s timetabling practises. Professor Lindsay has just completed two weeks of interviews with staff from across the University and is preparing a report on his findings and recommendations. Timetabling for the rest of the year Timetabling staff across the University have been given read-only access to the 2011 timetable to ensure the stability and success of the online registration process. Central Timetabling will now be responsible for facilitating any changes made to the 2011 timetable. Any changes to the 2011 timetable need to be facilitated through Faculty timetabling staff who will forward the requests to room-bookings@newcastle.edu.au. Faculty timetabling staff will now begin work on the 2012 timetable.
