NORCECA 2007 PRESIDENT REPORT


NORCECA VOLLEYBALL CONFEDERATION Activities Report 2007 We have the privileged of presenting the following activities report of NORCECA Volleyball Confederation covering the period of January 1 thru December 31, 2007, as well as, the 2008, 2009 and 2010 competition calendars. Regional, Continental, Intercontinental and International events received a decisive support from NORCECA’s staff, technical and support personnel, in order to ensure the organization of events, according to FIVB Regulations.


During 2007 NORCECA, has established an adequate communication and constant flow of information to support the activities of its 35 National Federations. With the guidance of FIVB’s President, Dr. Rubén Acosta Hernandez, NORCECA held all Commission Meetings as programmed at its Headquarters. During the month of February NORCECA Sport Organizing Commission, Refereeing, Beach Volleyball, Technical and Coaches, Medical, Press, Marketing and Finance held their meetings in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic programming the future of our activities and events, receiving a full report from each commission, in order to implement decisions optimizing the efficiency of NORCECA’s working commissions. NORCECA Headquarters, a modern facility for its administration equipped with the latest technology available and sufficient office space also served to comfortably host the annual Executive Committee and Board of Administration Meeting. Today NORCECA permanent staff counts with a total of 11 members, complying with NORCECA organizational and operational charts.


Finances NORCECA Finance Department in due time presented, during the Finance Commission Meeting, the Internal 2007 Finance Report and audited Financial Statements and Accounts, being approved and remitted to our external auditors, Ernst & Young, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for the final audit to be performed to NORCECA’s 2007 Financial Statement and Accounts.

We must outline that during the 2007 NORCECA’s Budget was strictly followed, that NORCECA affiliated National Federations complied with the payment of their affiliation fees and that all competitions were developed according to the foreseen budget registrating an assets of income that allows us to create a special reserve in order to assist, financially, NORCECA’s Caribbean and Central American affiliated National Federations programmed in 2008 to host the Regional Caribbean and Central American Youth and Junior Championships.

NORCECA's website and Newsletters continues as an indispensable important outflowing tool for the promotion and information of NORCECA activities and competitions at a continental and world wide level. During the year 2007 more than 100 Newsletters traveled around the world informing NORCECA's activities and competitions that were followed by more than 120,000 subscribers. NORCECA's website constitutes today one of the leading volleyball information websites, being up to date with information and results of NORCECA's Zonal, Regional, Continental and International competitions and championships. All FIVB information related to NORCECA has been also posted on NORCECA’s website.

Progressively NORCECA is achieving the new marketing strategy for our major events (Continental Beach Volleyball, Pan-American Women's Volleyball Cups and NORCECA's Senior Continental Championship). The marketing of NORCECA's events have become an important source of income for our budget allowing NORCECA to distribute, every year, volleyball equipments among NORCECA's affiliated National Federations in order to support the development of volleyball in their respective countries. NORCECA signed a four year contract with Molten Corporation (Japanese manufacturer of goods) becoming Molten the official game ball for all volleyball and beach volleyball events organized by NORCECA.

Development Center NORCECA has become an important source of support for all the activities of the FIVB Regional Volleyball Development Center that is located in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. International Coaches Courses, School Volleyball Teachers Courses, Beach Volleyball Courses, Refereeing Courses and Special Technical Seminars were held successfully during 2007. Also, NORCECA provides to its affiliated National Federations the necessary support to establish training camps for their national teams within the facilities of the FIVB Regional Volleyball Development Center, providing room accommodation, meals, technical assistance and equipment. During 2007 several National Federations took advantage of these facilities in the preparation of their national teams towards their Zonal, Regional and Continental Championships. With the economical assistance of FIVB, NORCECA has engaged an international instructor who is now serving the Central American and Caribbean National Federations preparing and supervising their national team programs as well as conducting national coach’s courses, high performance coaches courses and seminars.

Americans Roca and Polzin triumphed in Boca Chica SANTO DOMINGO , Dominican Republic , April 8, 2007.- Americans Paula Roca and Alicia Polzin won the women’s gold medal of the Boca Chica Beach Tournament after a tough battle with Canadians Annie Martin and Dana Cooke. Roca and Polzin prevailed 21-16, 20-22, 15-8, while Cubans Ion Canet and Kirenia Ballar also needed three sets to win the bronze medal with a 19-21, 21-16, 15-8 victory over Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro of Costa Rica. The event sponsored by Presidente Light beer is the first of five legs of the 2007 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit.

Americans men Stolfus and Wong won the gold SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 8, 2007.- American men’s pair of Scott Wong and Hans Stolfus won the gold medal of the Boca Chica Tournament, the first leg of the 2007 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit, with a 21-19, 21-10 victory over Marcelo Araya and Jonathan Guevara of Costa Rica. Cuban Yunieski Ramirez and Yoendris Kindelán won the bronze medal in defeating Jorge Bolanos and Jose Gonzalez of Guatemala by 21-9, 21-14. “The first set shows how good the Costa Ricans are,” said Stolfus after the match. “It was a tough battle, but we were able to put together a good streak in the second set.”

GUATEMALA, April 22, 2007.- The pairs of Puerto Rico and Cuba, in women and men respectively, won the second leg of the 2007 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit held here during the weekend.


Juncos won the title before record crowd PONCE, Puerto Rico, April 30, 2007.- Two new attendance records were established in the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League during the last match of the best-of-seven final series won by Juncos in five sets on Sunday. A paid attendance crowd of 9,068 spectators filled the stands of Pachin Vicens Auditorium and for the first time in history the league surpassed the 200,000 fans barrier reaching a total of 203, 307 for the season. It was an extremely close playoff with five of the seven matches stretching to the limit Series MVP Karina Ocasio scored 26 points and Eva Cruz added 22 in the 25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 23-25, 18-16 victory over Caguas. American Kim Willoughby led all the scorers with 29 in the losing cause. At 14-all in the tie-breaker, Ocasio and Willoughby exchanged scoring spikes and with the teams tied up at 16, one kill by Ocasio was followed by an ace of Carolina Rodriguez for the title.

Americans Barron & Szymanski showed resiliency and determination to take the gold SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 21, 2007.- Showing a great dose of resiliency the American pair of Art Barron and Mike Szymanski won a deserved men’s gold medal in the Puerto Rico Beach Volleyball Tournament after playing three consecutive matches that went to the limit on Sunday.

Puerto Ricans Ruiz-Yantin won the gold in Trinidad PORT OF SPAIN , Trinidad , May 27, 2007.- Ania Ruiz and Yamileska Yantin, the duo of Puerto Rico-1 was crowned as queens of the fourth and final leg of the North, Central American and Caribbean Continental Beach Volleyball Tour –Spike Down. Ruiz-Yantin edged Cubans Ion Canet and Kirenia Bell in three sensational sets by scores of 21-18, 18-21, 18-16. Canadians Mila Miguel and Asia Danilova won the bronze medal with a 21-17, 21-9 victory over Maria Orellana and Anna Ramirez of Guatemala. In the semi final round, Ruiz-Yantin beat Canadians Miguel-Danilova 23-21, 21-13 and Canet-Bell ease past Orellana-Ramirez 21-8, 21-19. The 2007 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit had stops at Santo Domingo , Guatemala , Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago.

II PAN AMERICAN MEN´S VOLLEYBALL CUP Held in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on June 3-8, 2007 With the participation of the top 8 Men´s National Volleyball Team. This important competition in its second edition qualifies the top 3 teams to the America’s Cup, event that is held every year in Brazil under the auspice of the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation.


VI PAN AMERICAN WOMEN´S VOLLEYBALL CUP Held in the city of Colima, Mexico on June 19-30, 2007 This important competition served as a qualifying event to the 2008 FIVB World Grand Prix, gathering the top 12 teams of America.


2007 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship Anaheim, California, USA, September 14-22, 2007

USA Men Captured NORCECA Gold Against Puerto Rico ANAHEIM, California, September 21, 2007.- Upstart Puerto Rico put up a fight, but the U.S. National Volleyball Team took a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23) victory to win the gold medal at the 2007 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship on Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena. The U.S. Men finish the tournament with a 5-0 record. Puerto Rico wins the silver medal with a 4-2 record with two losses to Team USA.

2007 NORCECA Women’s Continental Olympic Qualification Championship

held in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon State, Mexico on December 15-23, 2007 being this event a qualifying competition to the 2008 Olympic Games Beijing, China.


XIX NORCECA Congress On October 27-28, 2007 the XIX NORCECA Congress was held in the city of Oranjestad, Aruba, with the presence of 27 National Federations. This congress presented an important agenda that included the Minutes of the 2006-2007 Executive Committee and Board of Administration Meeting, Reports of the General Assemblies and Elections within the National Federations, Presidential Activities, Implementations of the decisions of the XXX FIVB World Congress, Reports on the participation of national teams during mayor important events, NORCECA’s incorporation, Report on the activities of Zonal Associations of NORCECA, as well as, the Report on Future NORCECA competition organizers.


XIX NORCECA Congress During the XIX NORCECA Congress the delegates of NORCECA’s National Federations approved unanimously several proposals that were presented by the Executive Committee and Board of Administration of NORCECA following the recommendation of FIVB. Also, the different commission reports presented were approved and the 2006 Audited Financial Statements by Ernst & Young were received satisfactorily approving the Assembly the correspondent discharge to NORCECA’s Administration. The budget for 2008-2009 was approved, the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Competition Calendars were confirmed and most important, a detailed report that covered 2005, 2006 and 2007 activities and competitions presented by NORCECA’s President was also approved receiving each National Federation a copy (CD) of this report.



NORCECA anticipates active participation in next FIVB World Congress SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, October 5, 2007.- The NORCECA Confederation has started all the necessary coordination in order to ensure the participation of all its 35 National Federations in the next FIVB World Congress to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in June 2008. Mr. Crist贸bal Marte Hoffiz, President of the continental institution, said that as same as occurred in the 2006 Congress held in Tokyo, NORCECA will be present in Dubai with a 100 percent of attendance.


2008 NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Championship To conclude our report we must include the 2008 NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Championship. This extraordinary and exciting event held in the city of Caguas, Puerto Rico on January 4-12, 2008 with the participation of the National Men teams from USA, Cuba, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico captivated the attention of more than 72,000 fans during the six day period of the event. Also, local press newspapers gave a extraordinary coverage to the event with more than 12 pages daily in the main four national newspapers. Live TV and internet coverage was available to be followed by satellite and internet around the world. The final results of this championship accredited the USA National Men’s Volleyball Team with a ticket to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games giving the opportunity to Puerto Rico, 1st runner up and Cuba, 2nd runner up to also participate in the FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament with a chance to qualify to the Beijing Olympic Games.
