is a research facility operated jointly by the Foundation of Research and Technology - Hellas (F.O.R.T.H.), the University of Crete and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics of Germany. The Observatory location, at Skinakas peak on the Psiloritis mountain at an altitude of 1750m, offers excellent conditions for high on s click w e n e r r quality astronomical for mo retepost.g /c http:/ observations of in the area of the Mediterranean. It is equipped with a variety of instruments which qualify it as one of the world’s best equipped telescopes, at least relatively to its size. Research Activities The research that is performed at Skinakas Observatory covers a wide range of different fields in Astrophysics. The main observational programs are: 1. Variability studies of Active Galactic Nuclei 2. Optical identification of X-ray sources 3. Structure of Spiral galaxies 4. Photometry of stellar clusters 5. RR Lyrae variable stars 6. Photometric and Spectroscopic research of gaseous nebulae (planetary nebulae and supernova remnants) 7. X-ray binary systems including High-mass X-ray binaries, black hole 8. Candidates and cataclysmic variables 9. Search for Novae in M31 10. Interaction of cometary tails with the solar wind Most of the above mentioned programs are done in cooperation between the research institutes of Crete and the Max Planck institute, but also in cooperation with other astrophysicists and observatories from all over the world. The idea to create a site of astronomical research at Skinakas was conceived in the summer of 1984. Soon after the construction of a road to the mountain peak commenced. The university of Crete, The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH, former Research Center of Crete) and the Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik (Germany) agreed to build and operate together a telescope with the purpose of providing modern education in Astronomy to University

students and also of supporting astronomical observations with emphasis on the research of extended sky objects like comets and gaseous nebulae. The expected arrival of the comet Halley in the Spring of 1986, after 76 years of wandering through the solar system, set the time schedule for the installation of the telescope,

as in the Spring 1986, in order to participate in the inauguration of the Observatory as well as to observe of the comet Halley. In 1988 the construction of the guesthouse, also made out of stone, was completed and immediately hosted the First School of Observational Astrophysics in Greece. The successful installation and operation of

mirror diameter of 1.3m. The telescope, which remains the largest of the site, was inaugurated in Autumn 1995. The 1.3m telescope, seen on the right, was commissioned in 1995 and is the principal observing facility of Skinakas Observatory. It is a modified Ritchey–Chrétien telescope, that is it has a hyperbolic pri-

which having a wide field of view, and equipped with a highly sensitive electronic camera was especially suited for the observation of the comet. Indeed, after the construction of the road on the rocky mountain and the completion of the first stone-made observatory, hundreds of people from all over Greece, among them many officials, came to Skinak-

the first rather small telescope confirmed the excellent astronomical conditions at Skinakas characterizing it as one of the best sites for high quality astronomical observations in the Mediterranean area. Consequently, the cooperating institutions decided to further develop the Observatory by the installation of a larger and very modern telescope with a

mary and a hyperbolic secondary mirror, in order to provide a large field of view with high image quality. The mirrors were built by Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. The telescope mount is equatorial, computer controlled and was constructed by DFM Engineering. There is also an autoguider with off axis guiding system, which was built by Baader Planetarium.

She re n r for mo retepost.g /c :/ p t t paused a little too long h before her reply, and weighed her words carefully. It was just ok,she admitted. The hotel was gorgeous and the setting was really beautiful. But my friends and I really got on each other nerves. By the end of the trip, I was so ready to leave. 1. Discuss Logistics When sitting down to discuss the upcoming trip, be sure to

outline what’s needed from the get-go. For the actual travel, coordinate times of arrival and any required pick-ups/dropoffs from the airport, train stations, etc. 2. Outline the Budget You may have your heart set on a luxury hotel, for example, that won’t be feasible for several of your friends; the airfare from your home city may be prohibitively expensive to the area you want to visit; the original first-choice dates for the trip are affordable for only two out of the five friends traveling together. 3. Acknowledge And Respect Different Interests If you’re a plop on the beach type of traveler, don’t agree to go on a vacation with your adventurous buddies who love to skydive; if you’re a night owl who loves clubbing, don’t get irritated when your earlyto-bed/early-to-rise traveling friends decline to come along with you. One of the best reasons to trav-

Women on Crete They Create Agricultural Cooperatives and WIN their LIVING!!! Everywhere, women are

moving, moving -- carrying heavy crates and boxes with great easeand a little laughter -- strong, focused women. They’re doing what they’ve always done, only on a much larger scale. It re n epo for mo ttp://cret h is also an opportunity to try the flavors of pure products without preservatives prepared according to traditional Cretan recipes of past years. The Greek government considered the concept of Women’s Agricultural Cooperatives in the1980’s, to address gender inequality in rural communities where employment opportunities, educational levels and equal rights are frightfully minimal. Most women in these areas born before the mid-20th Century participate in daily

farming chores and maintain the household. Cooperatives operate much like any business, someone’s got to put up the capital to start the operation then prove to prospective investors that it’s viable. The members pay dues and offer specialized services in anticipation of future returns and are ultimately responsible for the company’s success.

Erato Women’s Agricultural and Arts and Crafts Cooperative is located at Apostoloi village, at Amario district, 28km from Rethymno city centre (40-minute drive). It was created by a group of women in the village in order to contribute to the local economy. Visitors will have the chance to taste traditional products, made with pure ingredients,

without conservatives, just as they would do at home. There are various spoon sweets (walnut, grape, pear, lemon, watermelon, sour cherry, plum, etc.) and marmalades (cherry, fig, kiwi, citrus, strawberry, apple, quince, etc.) as well as drinks such as liqueurs (cherry, sour cherry, lemon, orange, mandarin, etc), raki, molasses, wine, among others.

The streets are paved with cobblestones, and livestock roams the fields. There is a beautiful monastery in Spili as well as plenty of quaint little shops selling dried herbs and other treasures. The town is lush and green thanks to the natural flow of water down the mountain into the town. This fact also makes the climate in Spili quite temperate in comparison to other parts of the island during the summer months. The main square of the village is lovely and has a fine stone fountain constituted by a row of stone carved lion heads from where crystal clear water flows. The village is famous for

producing unique weaving. The important battle of Mesara, one of the many against the Turkish occupation, took place in 1833 in the village of Spili. In 1941, the village was destroyed by the Germans during World War II. A few taverns and accommodations are available in Spili. Some interesting Byzantine churches and a medieval tower are quite interesting to visit, as well as a wonderful beach with pristine waters in the surrounding area. If besides monasteries and beaches you’d also like to see

a pretty and cosy village than Spili (on the road from Agia Galini in the south to Rethymnon, which is 28km in distance) should be on your list. In Spili there is an abundance of water, so Spili is very green. There is a Venetian ‘Kefalovrissi’ fountain with 19 lion heads and 6 other fountains, that brings crystal clear, drinking water from the Psiloritis mountain. human consumption. The Greek Theophrastus recorded in 4BC that his fellow Greeks called the carob the Egyptian Fig. There is also evidence that Ancient Egyptians used carob. Both the pods and seeds have been found in Egyptian Tombs. Further, the Romans ate the Carob pods when they were green and fresh for their natural sweetness. Thus, Carob is no newly discovered food.
