Australia has introduced its heaviest short radius excavator to date, as well as a new range of mini excavators

Heavy hitter

Kobelco saysthat its new SK380SRLC-7 is the heaviest and most capable short radius excavator it has released to date.

Ideal for operators working on urban and residential jobsites, the construction machinery company says short radius machines are becoming increasingly popular due to ongoing requirements for roadworks and utility maintenance.

Short radius machines bene t from a smaller working footprint, Kobelco says – which means that they can access tighter working areas.

This new model has notable improvements on the previous SK380SRLC model, including an upgraded operator station and a ve per cent increase in engine output.

Capable of operating safely in a

single road lane, Kobelco says the excavator is perfect for highway project applications requiring a larger machine in a restricted work area.

The new model weighs in at 37 tonnes, encompasses a 210kW output and has a six per cent higher torque than previous models.

In addition to the SK380SRLC-7, Kobelco has also announced the arrival of its Series 7 mini excavator range to Australia, which includes the SK28SR-7, SK30SR-7 and SK35SR-7.

Replacing the dash 6 series, the new range o ers increased engine performance (from 18 to 19kW), an updated cabin interior and easier maintenance.

“We’re always taking on board our customer’s feedback to understand

what they need from their mini excavators and how they perform on jobsites,” Kobelco Australia product and distribution general manager Mark Johnson says.

The dash 7 series mini excavators cater for operating requirements from three to four tonnes, with base machine weights ranging from 2,930kg to 3,890kg.

Fuel consumption has been reduced by 25 per cent in this range using the new ECO-mode and the quick hitch piping has also been extended by 200mm, with standard tilt lines on SK30SR-7 and SK35SR-7 models.

Digga Australia founder Stewart Wright was passionate about R&D, product design, customer service and manufacturing as much as possible in-house in Australia, Digga Australia says in the announcement of his death.

While Wright had not been involved in

the day-to-day running of the business for over a decade, the machinery attachments business says he was always available to o er advice and suggestions on projects and the company’s direction.

“Stewart would drop everything to

get a customer working or back up and running,” Digga Australia says.

“One of his proudest achievements is that of his 2009 Australian International Design Award.”

Wright started Digga, originally called Sunplas, when he moved from Sydney in 1981 to sell Pengo wear parts in Queensland, Digga Australia says.

In 1983, Digga moved into larger premises in Loganholme, QLD where the first chain-driven auger drives were designed, manufactured and released in 1985.

By 1997 Digga had started exporting products to Europe and the USA to meet the increasing demand for quality attachments.

“Stewart will be dearly missed by the Digga family and all who knew him,” Digga Australia says.

Metso’s new service centre in Karratha is its largest worldwide

Located on WA’s north coast, Metso’s new $52 million Karratha service centre was o cially opened on March 21, making it Metso’s largest service centre in the world.

The Karratha service centre spans 35,000 square metres, including a 5,000 square metre workshop and has been built to service the Pilbara region.

Equipped with advanced amenities such as high-capacity cranes, CNC machines, a heat treatment furnace, welding facilities and assembly stations, the centre will be able to service a wide range of heavy mining equipment, including crushers, screens, mills, high intensity grading mills, high pressure grinding rolls and car dumpers, among others.

Metso says that by reducing the need for long-haul freight between Perth and the Pilbara region, the centre reduces carbon emissions and o ers faster access to critical spare parts, enhancing operational e ciency.

“The opening of the new centre is an important milestone and further proof of our commitment to accelerate strategic investments in serving customers from pit to port,” Metso president services business area Sami Takaluoma says.

New Holland Construction releases D-Series mini excavators

New Holland Construction has launched its new D-Series mini excavators. The E17D, E19D, E25D, E35D, E50D and E58D models are now available in Australia, with New Holland Construction saying the D-Series caters to a broad spectrum of applications, from light construction duties to landscaping and agriculture.

The D-Series mini excavators cover weights from 1.7 to six tonnes and are designed for landscaping and facilities maintenance, agriculture, plant nurseries, vineyards, estate management and contracting. Models are available with either a canopy or a cab and have a zero tail swing design.

Key features of the D-Series include quick maintenance, with easy access to service points facilitated by the tiltable cab and canopy. A variable undercarriage allows the smaller models to pass through narrow spaces such as doorways for indoor and backyard work.

WesTrac launched the Next Gen Caterpillar 255 compact track loader in Sydney earlier this month

WesTrac o cially launched the Next Gen Caterpillar 255 compact track loader on its stand at this year’s Diesel, Dirt & Turf Expo (DDT) in Sydney this month.

Celebrating 20 years of WesTrac in NSW, the 255 is the rst of its kind to arrive in Australia.

The design of the Next Gen 255 has been strongly in uenced by customer input and WesTrac says initial feedback suggests this machine is going to be in high demand.

In addition to superior performance, the 255 o ers signi cantly enhanced user comfort and operability, WesTrac says.

Replacing the rst generation 259D3 compact track loader, the 255 is powered by a Cat C2.8T engine, which o ers 74.3 horsepower (55.4kW).

Caterpillar says the new engine maintains horsepower across a wider RPM range and boasts a torque increase of 13 per cent, for improved working performance.

A redesigned engine compartment mounts the engine and cooling package lower into the frame for improved stability, it adds. This can give the operator con dence in handling heavy loads and other aspects of the work cycle.

The 255 delivers class-leading li height and delivers 36 per cent more tilt breakout compared to its

rst-generation counterpart. A 26 per cent higher li breakout force and a 24 per cent increase in rated operating capacity (ROC) is also included as part of the next generation track loader.

Featuring a larger cabin design, operator comfort is maximised with 22 per cent more overall volume and 26 per cent additional foot space. A 70mm increased interior width expands the cab’s footwell-toceiling height by 46mm and allows for an additional 40mm of hip room and 28mm more width between the joysticks.

Caterpillar says a low entry point makes entering and exiting the 255 much easier and the redesign allows the operator to open the cab door without the li arms being fully lowered to the frame stops. This launch marks the second Next Gen Caterpillar release following the new excavator range, Westrac says.

Electrifying partnership

Discover how Yellowgate Group’s rent to buy solution has helped Midland Brick trial a XC968-EV electric wheel loader –the first of this model to reach Australia

Perth-based Midland Brick is a brick manufacturer today owned by BGC Group. With a 70-year-old history, the business has established itself as one of the most recognisable brands in Western Australia, producing and selling bricks, roof tiles and pavers.

When the time came to replace one of its old wheel loaders, several factors immediately came into play. One of the main considerations when looking at a new wheel loader was the emissions it released – due to Midland Brick’s fleet consisting of machines that all burn diesel.

“We spoke to all the big brands in the construction and mining equipment industry – none of them [at the time] had anything available as an alternative to diesel engines,” Midland Brick procurement manager Kristian Walter says.

Eventually, Midland Brick found what it was looking for in XCMG – the XC968-EV electric wheel loader.

“When XCMG introduced this particular loader, it stood out for us,” Walter says.

“It instantly triggered our interest to investigate it further, look into the

cost and see if it would make sense for us.”

Due to the loader’s energy efficient capabilities, the XC968-EV became a no-brainer as it perfectly encapsulated Midland Brick’s strategy to become more energy efficient. However, with no previous experience with the XCMG brand or the model in question, the company was hesitant to buy the machine.

This is where Yellowgate’s expertise and capabilities in the rent-to-buy market came into play.

Yellowgate

With Yellowgate’s Rent Now, Buy Later solution, its customers can quickly access the heavy machinery they need to fulfil contracts while reducing the financial risk involved. There could be a variety of reasons that make renting machinery a better solution for a contractor compared to buying. For example, the business could be experiencing a period of high growth or recovery, it could still be setting up, or the business owners may not currently have access to the funds required for outright purchase.

With the rent to buy model offered by Yellowgate, a business can quickly access the heavy machinery required to fulfil a contract at a more manageable cost to the business and in a way that provides a more economical pathway to ownership of the machine down the line should the business decide to purchase it.

It is this flexibility and speed of access to machinery that was a key draw for Midland Brick.

“Other business models usually don’t allow you to purchase an asset within a short timeframe,” Walter says.

“In this instance, we agreed on the rent-to-buy solution, because it allows us to try the equipment and then make an informed decision based on that trial period.”

Yellowgate’s Rent Now, Buy Later solution offered Midland Brick a rental product in the form of an off-book operational expense (OPEX). This allows Midland Brick to make manageable ongoing rental payments and get its new XCMG wheel loader earning money on site faster than if it purchased the

machine as a capital expenditure (CAPEX), which would have required a far larger financial commitment up front.

Yellowgate managing director Chris McRae says businesses usually have CAPEX budgets and, if the business goes over this, spending will stop. In this situation, Yellowgate can continue to supply the equipment to a business, so it can reap the benefits of the asset immediately and capitalise on it later.

If Midland Brick subsequently decides that it doesn’t want to buy the XCMG electric wheel loader, Yellowgate will take it back and either rent it out again or sell it on – giving Midland Brick the opportunity to try out an electric machine and see if it works for the business.

Another key aspect of Yellowgate’s business is its support for customers.

“We’ve got the ability to grow with other businesses,” McRae says.

“People may be looking at uncertain futures, but our product only goes for 12 months, which can help businesses focus on one commitment.

“If businesses are looking for something that’s 12 months into the future, we can help them get the type of asset that they need.”

Buying the electric wheel loader was the first transaction between XCMG and Yellowgate, with the potential for an ongoing partnership in the future.

XCMG mining business development manager Steve Lihou says XCMG is a rapidly growing original equipment manufacturer that’s starting to make a name for itself in Australia.

“We feel that we’ve got some technology that is really going to benefit our customers,” he says.

The XCMG XC968-EV has an operating mass of 18.8 tonnes and rated power up to 280kW (375 horsepower). The electric wheel loader also has a 3.2-cubic metre bucket capacity with a rated load of 5.8 tonnes.

Kristian Walter, from Midland Brick, says the XC968-EV is making it easier to move materials on-site.

Without an engine or transmission, the electric wheel loader provides

lower maintenance costs for Midland Brick, with this proving to be just one advantage out of many that he says it has over traditional loaders running on diesel.

“After we crunched the numbers, we came to the conclusion using an electric loader would be cheaper for us to run than diesel,” Walter says.

“The loader is also quiet and there’s no pollution or fumes for the driver, operator and any people close by.”

Despite lacking an engine, Walter says the loader doesn’t lack power and the charging is even easier than refuelling a diesel loader.

After a successful procurement, Midland Brick has Yellowgate as its first point of contact for any future procuring and renting solutions.

“If there are other more innovative solutions or capital expenses coming up, we will be more than happy to engage with Yellowgate and explore that solution,” Walter says.

Coleman’s Equipment has provided Robinson Earthmoving a striking grey Cat D8 dozer, marking it as the 100th piece of plant to join Robinson’s all-Caterpillar fleet. As well as turning heads, this dozer is also raising money for the local hospital. We speak with owner Chris Robinson to find out more

Heads have been turning on the Coffs Harbour Bypass as a dark grey Cat D8 dozer painted by used machinery specialist Coleman’s Equipment goes about its business on the Pacific Highway Upgrade.

Delivered by Coleman’s Equipment at the end of January to Robinson Earthmoving, the unusual paint job and custom decals are a celebration of a key milestone for the company as well as an inspiration for raising money for a good cause.

100th piece of plant

With Robinson Earthmoving engaged on the 14km Coffs Harbour Bypass project, stretching around the western edge of the coastal NSW city, Robinson says the time had come for the addition of another D8 dozer to his all-Caterpillar fleet.

With Robinson’s long association with Coleman’s Equipment, he reached out to managing director Mark Coleman to source a used dozer, but also to bring an interesting idea to the table – getting Coleman’s

Equipment to paint the machine in dark grey to celebrate its position as Robinson’s 100th piece of plant.

After Coleman’s Equipment had sourced a 2018 model low-hour 39tonne D8 dozer, this is where things got interesting.

“I had an idea in my head and took it to Mark,” Robinson explains.

“When I said that, for our 100th machine, I wanted to do a D8 Caterpillar bulldozer in Kenworth colours, you should have seen his face!”

“We wanted to do something a little bit special and not everyone paints a huge bulldozer a different colour. We also went for some custom decals.”

With its own paint facility and highly trained workforce, Coleman’s Equipment is well placed to take on customisation jobs, with the team quickly getting stuck in to bring Robinson’s vision to life.

It also worked with fellow Orange business McSigns to design a set of custom Cat logos and Robinson Earthmoving signs to adorn the

striking dark grey paintwork, chosen to match Robinson’s Kenworth trucks. Three gold plaques proudly mark the dozer as being Robinson’s 100th machine.

“We’ve purchased machines from Coleman’s Equipment, sold machines to them, done haulage with them and hired machinery from them for close to 10 years now, so for our 100th machine it was great to get them involved and they’ve done a really good job,” Robinson says.

Money for a good cause

Alongside the paintwork there is an even more inspiring story –Robinson’s desire to acknowledge the lifesaving care his three-yearold daughter received from Coffs Harbour Hospital’s children’s ward.

“I wanted the new dozer to stand out, but also do something a bit special with it,” he says.

“As we’re working on the Coff’s Harbour Bypass in our home town, I decided to do a donation to the Coffs Harbour Hospital children’s ward.

My daughter was quite sick and spent a bit of time there, so I thought, why not do some sort of donation?”

“I contacted Coffs Harbour Hospital and asked if they needed anything for the children’s ward, as they did a fantastic job with my daughter. There’s a range of things they need, including a new bladder scanning machine for children. At the moment, if a child needs to get their bladder scanned, they have to go to Brisbane or Sydney. “

“So, we’ve started that process and, for every hour the D8 dozer is working on the Coffs Harbour Bypass, I’ll donate $20.”

And he’s not alone – interest has been gathering amongst the local earthmoving community, with other businesses adding their own donations to the cause, including a generous gesture from Coleman’s Equipment.

“I was talking about my idea for donating money to the hospital with Mark and he told a few of his other clients, showing them pictures of the painted dozer, and they said that they’re happy to put in some money, too,” Robinson says.

“On top of that, Coleman’s waived

the cost of the paint job, which was probably $40,000 in the end, which is fantastic.”

“This is why we’ve gone to such an amount of effort for this bulldozer. It’s not just about painting it, it’s about advertising what we’re doing for a good cause.”

On the job

When asked why Caterpillar was his go-to choice of equipment, even if the classic yellow has been superseded with a coat of Kenworth grey, Robinson says he’s been running a pure Cat earthmoving fleet for several years due to the high level of technological requirements demanded by his work.

“We predominantly build new

freeways, so Tier One infrastructure work, and we’ve got to run the latest and greatest technology,” he says.

“Caterpillar has always been leading in that market. The other reason is we do some work out around Moree and Narrabri, so more remote areas, and they’ve got the best aftersales service, mechanics and coverage across those areas.”

“Sitech Solutions installed a Trimble Earthworks 3D GPS System onto the machine, as, for our work, this technology is compulsory. It means you have your full design right in front of you, so every time you’re blading a bit of dirt, you know what level to cut to, or to fill to, and you can see the full shape of the road.”

With the dozer already out on the bypass tallying up the hours, its unusual appearance has been causing a stir – exactly as Robinson wanted.

“The paint job has certainly stood out, as you can imagine, as people are used to Caterpillars being yellow,” he says.

“So, when a dark grey bulldozer turned up, everyone was rubbernecking; they just couldn’t believe it. It was the talk of the job for the week.”

“Even when transporting it from Coleman’s in Orange to Coffs Harbour, the number of people tagging me on Instagram on photos and videos they’d taken of it was crazy. It’s just not something that people see every day.” For more information on Coleman’s Equipment, visit:

The personal touch

Cater Equipment goes beyond selling used earthmoving machinery to o er a bespoke consultancy service for earthmoving clients, helping them nd precisely the item of used machinery they need, however specialised the task

“You know what you’re doing, you love doing it, give it a crack.”

These were the words that spurred Cater Equipment owner Sam Cater into setting up his own used machinery business two and a half years ago, a er a decade spent honing his cra with Volvo dealer CJD Equipment.

With support from his wife and long-term customers that saw the value of Cater’s deep knowledge of the machinery market, Cater Equipment is now sourcing and selling high quality used earthmoving equipment from around the world.

“Even once I le CJD Equipment, which I still have a great rapport with, I still had people reaching out to me to locate speci c pieces of machinery they needed,” Cater says.

“I therefore decided to set up my own business; taking the skill set I had from selling new machinery and applying it to the used machinery market.”

“Where our expertise comes to the fore is in background checks and the lengths that we go to to ensure that what we’re buying represents value to our clients,” Cater says.

He says that this is the strength of Cater Equipment, as the business goes beyond just buying and selling used machinery to provide a consultancy service that seeks to understand a client’s long-term machinery needs for upcoming projects and locate specialised items that are more di cult to nd.

“We’re always trying to extend ourselves to do the jobs that others will turn their back on to try and nd more uncommon pieces of

equipment and we’ll leave no leaf unturned to nd the right bit of equipment for a client,” Cater says.

“This means working very closely with those businesses to understand what they need, when they need it, what we can o er and how we can help meet project deadlines.

A di erent approach

Cater says that, with his experience from selling Volvo machinery through CJD Equipment, he is bringing a new equipment approach to sourcing used equipment for his client base.

This is particularly useful in the mining segment, he explains, where planning around asset disposal and procurement takes place in the longer-term and Cater Equipment’s global network of contacts can ease the process of sourcing and verifying machinery.

“We do all the background checks on the equipment, so a client has

peace of mind about what they’re buying and making sure it meets their speci cations before a deadline,” Cater says.

“We’re exible and will y anywhere to look at the machine, inspect it and do our due diligence, because the due diligence is everything. Anything that we’re looking at, we do full machinery inspections with sampling, serial number checks, etc. If there’s any doubt in our mind about what we’re buying, we pass on it.

“It’s very much a consultancybased approach, working with the client over the course of months or years to understand what they need. Through superior networking, and the use of contacts and industry experience over decades, this gives us the ability to source the right equipment for the right projects within timelines.

“Every purchase of a machine, I treat as if I’m buying it for my own use. I have the highest standards and I would expect no less from my customers.”

Lynfield Group, accredited by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), offers a full biosecurity package for imported equipment, with its government-certified wash bay providing a quick machinery turnaround for its customers

For nearly two decades, Melbourne’s Lynfield Group has been operating as a biosecurity centre for customers wanting to wash their imported earthmoving machines, providing full stripdowns and inspections as part of the service.

With all imported used earthmoving machinery needing to be inspected and thoroughly

cleaned to remove soil, seeds, plant and animal material that could pose a biosecurity risk to Australia, this posed a logistical issue as Lynfield Group grew and started processing ever greater numbers of machines.

The solution was to bring the biosecurity washing in-house, with a new government-approved wash bay opening at Lynfield’s Altona North facility in 2005.

nearly 100 per cent of used earthmoving machinery entering the country will need to be washed, so Lyn eld operating its own wash bay is a huge bene t for the operation.

“If the biosecurity o cer ags an imported machine and it’s not cleared, customers can send their machines to us and we can proceed with the washing,” he says.

Imported equipment can be easily transported to the Lyn eld facilities in the west of Melbourne, located in close vicinity to the Port of Melbourne.

“We can take apart the machine, leaving it virtually naked, wash it and then put it all back together again in one piece,” Lynch says.

“All the panels come o and you pretty much have to get every single bit of dirt out of the machine.”

A er this is done, a biosecurity

o cer will inspect the machine and give the nal tick of approval. From this point the customer can take the machine as-is or pay for Lyn eld to rebuild it.

Expertise

Having run its own biosecurity wash bay for nearly 20 years, Lyn eld has ample experience in providing a full service for dismantling and cleaning a wide range of earthmoving machinery.

“If you can imagine how many parts make up a machine, it’s very easy for them to go missing,” Lynch says.

“We have a really good system in place to prevent parts being damaged or lost.

“We service anything from twotonne to 100-tonne excavators,

ve-tonne to 40-tonne wheel loaders and a range of dozers.”

Lynch explains that cleaning and washing these machines is a delicate process, given their complexity and the investment made by customers.

“The value of these things is something that you can’t mess with, you can’t just pick up a broom and hose and go berserk on it,” he says.

Turnaround time is a big point of di erence for Lyn eld, Lynch says, with the team able to take apart, wash and put a machine back together much quicker than other wash bay facilities.

“Some places can take three months to do this process, but we’ve been able to get through some machines in just three days,” Lynch says.

“We’ve had experience over a long time to know how to do this process without breaking anything but also being very quick.”

With a variety of wearable safety technologies becoming more common in construction, Jackson Haddad takes a look at a Deakin University fatigue monitoring project that is developing an easy-to-wear solution to help prevent workplace injuries

With worker safety a major concern for an industry that continues to see a high risk of workplace injuries and fatalities, researching ways in which technology can mitigate risk is attracting increasing interest.

A 2023 Deloitte report found that 34 per cent of construction and engineering businesses from across Australia, Japan and Singapore are currently employing wearable technologies to help make workers more aware and protect them from health and safety risks on site.

One wearable tech project currently underway in Australia is being conducted by Deakin University’s Workforce Safety and Performance Research and Innovation (WSPRI) group, which is pioneering the use of a next generation wearable sensor to prevent fatigue amongst construction workers and machinery operators.

The multidisciplinary group of researchers was established in 2020 with the aim of improving

injury prevention by developing new technologies for hazardous industries such as construction, mining and forestry.

Combining four Deakin University schools (architecture and built environment, information technology, psychology, and exercise and nutrition science), the group has been able to provide complementary expertise required for the delivery of their complex multidisciplinary projects.

“When we look at statistics, we believe that there haven’t been any improvements in terms of injury or fatality prevention in the last 10 years,” WSPRI co-director associate professor Farnad Nasirzadeh says.

“Initially, we used the sensors to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in 2020 as this was a very signi cant risk for the construction sector at the time.”

As an alternative to manually checking workers’ temperature to isolate COVID-19 infections, WSPRI conducted a trial backed by construction unions and Australian workers’ entitlement scheme Incolink where sta wore wearable devices such as vests, earpieces, rings and underarm sensors. These were connected to a live monitoring system, which triggered an alert if a high temperature was detected

“We used the sensors for temperature screening and the project was very successful, attracting high attention at the national level,” Nasirzadeh says.

Next step

These wearable sensors provided accurate information and peace of mind for workers when wearing them over an extended period of the time, WSPRI group co-director Tony Arnel says.

Since then, WSPRI has looked at using its wearable sensors to manage a wide range of risks for workers such as fatigue, heat stress and musculoskeletal disorders.

The wearable sensors have been found to accurately monitor fatigue by tracking an individual’s heart rate, brain signals and eye movements –reducing the risk of injury.

“One of the most signi cant risks in earthmoving and excavation operations is fatigue – especially mental fatigue,” Nasirzadeh says.

“In one of our recent projects, we used headbands to measure brain signals and dashboard mounted cameras to monitor facial parameters of operators. Then, we measure the level of fatigue objectively using the brain signals and facial parameters.

“We believe we have been pioneers in construction in terms of covering a very wide range of safety risks.”

Nasirzadeh believes the trial conducted in 2020 was the rst project in the building sector where wearable devices were used with the support of unions.

“This technology is still in its earliest stages, but I think in the near future we will see a signi cant increase in the adoption of this technology in the sector,” he says.

“There is no other solution when you see the statistics on injury prevention. This means we need new safety innovation.”

Lessening the load

On construction sites and associated industries, the repetitive nature of tasks and the heavy loads lifted on site can lead to musculoskeletal injuries. The University of Wollongong is undertaking a project that aims to develop a warning system to alert workers to excessive loads and help prevent injuries

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is focusing on ways to prevent musculoskeletal injuries in construction workers repeatedly lifting heavy loads through the development of a cutting edge wearable technology.

It is seeking to enhance the occupational health and safety of construction workers by looking at advancing current wearable sensor-based monitoring methods coupled with the state-of-theart biomechanics and human movement analysis.

Funded by UOW’s Global Seed Fund, the Telstra-UOW Hub for Artificial Intelligence of Things’ Solutions Seed Funding Program, and funds from ARC Steel Research Hub’s SME Engagement Program, UOW is developing technology that could predict and warn workers of potential injury or elevated levels of musculoskeletal loads.

Combining four UOW Faculties (Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences; Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities,

Faculty of Business and Law and Faculty of Science, Medicine, and Health), the multidisciplinary team is focused on developing a warning system that could work together with a wearable device.

The aim is to make repetitive and physically demanding jobs safer.

“When a worker gets injured, not only is that person impacted, but their family also gets impacted and the community gets impacted,” UOW structural engineering lecturer Aziz Ahmed says.

“We want to avoid or minimise injury and long-term health issues .”

Completing a pilot study in 2021, it was found that using machine and deep learning algorithms could predict body movements and loads quite accurately – using only five sensors.

“This was a good outcome for us because the fewer sensors you need to predict these forces, the more user-friendly our technology will be,” Ahmed says.

Planning to run a proof-of-concept study in an emulated construction

scenario in early 2024, Ahmed says his team will be able to develop artificial intelligence-based programs to correlate sensor data to the muscle and joint forces.

“When we are confident that our code is working well, we’ll take this setup to the site, and do the same tests in a live environment – where the workers are actually working on real life tasks,” Ahmed says.

The project will involve motion capture technology, recording an individual’s movements and providing information on where a person is in a certain space.

“If you’ve seen sci-fi movies, they have these green screens where the stunt actors wear these reflective markers on their body – essentially that’s camera-based motion capture technology and it’s very accurate,” UOW biomechatronics lecturer Manish Sreenivasa says.

“In addition to motion, what we want to do is record the forces that a person is putting on the environment, or the environment is putting on them.”

Computer models can then be used to estimate both the joint load on an individual during different tasks and what muscle force was being applied to make a specific motion.

Looking to the future, Ahmed expects that the deep-learning algorithms will be able to predict joint force and muscle force without requiring motion capture.

“The deep-learning algorithm will be our main invention, integrated into software which will be installed on a mobile. That app will be able to give someone warnings based on the predicted forces on joints and muscles,” Ahmed says.

UOW believes this technology could be applied to any industry where someone’s body undergoes repetitive stress load.

“Our system has the potential for a lot of applications, it could be used in any of those places where you are doing highly physical, repetitive work,” Sreenivasa says.

Highlights from Diesel Dirt & Turf

This year’s National Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo once again provided a range of machinery highlights, including several launches for the Australian market

Thousands travelled from across Australia to attend this year’s Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo (DDT) at Sydney Dragway from April 12-14.

The country’s largest construction expo was held over three days and, with over 150 exhibitors in attendance, the Earthmovers & Excavators team was on site to check out the latest and greatest equipment available for the earthmoving industry.

Here are some of the highlights from DDT 2024:

Komatsu

DDT Gold Sponsor Komatsu had one of the largest displays of machinery and technology at the event.

Two of Komatsu’s electric prototype excavators were at its 1,400

square metre site, with both pieces of machinery on display for the rst time in Australia.

Providing quieter operation than diesel machines, the PC210LCE-11 hydraulic electric excavator and the PC33E-6 electric mini excavator are suited for indoor sites and congested residential and commercial areas.

Komatsu says both excavators are battery-powered and deliver zero emissions without comprising on productivity or comfort.

The PC33E-6 has a 17.4kW electric motor and an operating weight of three tonnes.

CJD Equipment

Continuing the theme of electric excavators, the Australian distributor of Volvo and SDLG – CJD Equipment

– unveiled a brand-new Volvo ECR25 electric mini excavator.

CJD says the ECR25 provides the same performance as its diesel equivalent but releases zero emissions.

It has a two to four-hour run time depending on the application and provides quiet operation, which is bene cial to indoor sites and residential areas.

Capable of being charged to 80 per cent in less than an hour, the ECR25 can easily be recharged during lunch breaks.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA)

Displaying a variety of machines from Huski Construction Equipment, TMHA highlighted two key models of its Huski skid steer range, the 4SDK4 and 5SDK5.

Standard features on the skid steer range include its high li capacity, load handling pedal control, a multiple safety interlock system, a shock reducing bucket feature and low vibration control levers.

The compact-sized 4SDK4 is the smallest skid steer in the Huski range with a height of 1.8m and a width of 900mm, making it easily transportable on a trailer.

The 5SDK5 is capable of li ing loads of 430kg and is the largest skid steer in the range that can be transported within a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, which means it is still able to be carried on a trailer.

Slightly larger than its 4SDK4 counterpart, TMHA says the 5SDK5 skid steer can also be used in tight access spaces and stored in garages as the machine is only 1.25m wide and 1.86m tall.

Onetrak

An o cial dealer of Hidromek, Striker, Dressta, Tigercat, Hyundai and Anaconda machinery in Australia, Onetrak used DDT to showcase its popular HMK600MG Hidromek grader.

With an 18,000kg operating weight, this grader is the largest model in Onetrak’s grader range. It comes standard with a 3,710mm blade and a blade turning angle of 360 degrees, whilst producing 214 to 242 horsepower (160 to 180kW) with its Mercedes-Benz engine.

The HMK600MG can be used in many applications ranging from levelling and digging to trenching and snow ploughing.

Celebrating 20 years of the business in NSW, o cial Caterpillar dealer WesTrac launched a new Cat compact track loader on the rst day of DDT to kick o the event with a bang.

The Next Gen Caterpillar 255 compact track loader replaces the rst generation 259D3 compact track loader and is powered by a Cat C2.8T engine, which o ers 74.3hp (55.4kW).

The 255 delivers class-leading li height and delivers 36 per cent more tilt breakout when compared to its rst-generation counterpart, WesTrac says.

Also on display was one of the rst Cat construction machines sold in NSW by WesTrac – a 120H motor grader.

Continental

On display at Continental’s site was its Shop In A Box industrial uid solution, which is sold as a turnkey workbench

that replicates the capabilities of a hydraulic and industrial hose crimp shop for operators.

Available with the option of four di erent crimper models, the Shop In A Box is suited to both occasional users through to everyday users – depending on the crimper model chosen.

The crimper models have di erent crimp capabilities for various hose types, so a purchaser can choose the model that is suited to them.

The PC200i crimper model was of particular interest due to Continental’s patented CrimpIQ technology being integrated into it – connecting the PC200i to Bluetooth and a cloud.

Incorporating a precision-built actuator that ensures trouble-free operation, operators can tilt all attachments up to 180 degrees rather than having to move an entire machine.

Covering machines from one to 50 tonnes, the coupler has been designed with a compact and narrow body for greater visibility and performance. Its patented DPL+ safety system comes standard on the D-Lock tilt range, which the company says it gives a range of bene ts over other brands.

Colbrook Industries

Featuring a range of skid steer attachments, two highlights of Colbrook’s site was the SK drum mulcher DC Pro and the SK disc mulcher belt drive Pro X from Diamond Mowers, which it exclusively distributes in Australia.

Suited to loaders up to 75hp (56kW), the drum mulching attachment has

a cutting width of 50 inches (127cm) and mulches trees or brush up to eight inches in diameter.

The belt drive disc mulcher is designed for contractors and mulching professionals with up 60 inches of cutting width and cuts up to 14 inches diameter of brush and trees.

With class-leading torque, Colbrook says the belt drive can recover twice as fast as other disc mulchers.

Ag-Pride

NSW distributor of construction and agricultural implements Ag-Pride showed a range of Berti mulcher attachments designed for excavators in the three to 10-tonne range.

The Italian-built range of mulcher heads is designed to cover everything from roadside vegetation management to pasture clearance.

The KX/SSL Berci hydraulic forestry mulcher was on display, suited to skid steers from 50 to 90hp (37kW to 67kW).

Ag-Pride says it comes with xedteeth rotor and can mulch vegetable residue, branches and standing plants up to 12 to 15cm in diameter.

ITR Pacific

Earthmoving machinery parts supplier ITR Paci c was on site with its Track Group, three di erent sizes of rubber tracks, its o -road tyre range and a suite of nal drive, ripper shank and excavator bucket products and tools. Its o -road tyre range is designed for loaders, graders, scrapers, dump trucks, skid steers and more, with 15 di erent options of patterns to suit all forms of applications.

Also on the stand was an engine rebuilt with ITR parts and a Just Easy Tools forkli .

The zero emissions electric model has a 3.2-cubic metre bucket capacity with a rated load of 5.8 tonnes.

Also catching the eye was a XDA45U articulated dump truck installed with an Allquip Water Trucks 33,000 litre tank.

This machine has a 41-tonne payload and is designed for use

in mines, quarries, water conservation, harbours and construction sites.

Kobelco

Standing out with its blue-painted machinery, Kobelco showcased its newest excavators at the Expo, including the SK380SRLC-7 excavator – Kobelco’s heaviest short radius excavator to date.

Weighing in at 37 tonnes, the new model encompasses a 210kW (282hp) output and a six per cent higher torque than previous models.

Ideal for operators working on urban and residential jobsites, the construction machinery company says short radius machines are becoming increasingly popular due to ongoing requirements for roadworks and utility maintenance.

Steelwrist

Steelwrist’s stand had two large excavators demoing its range of quick couplers, tilt couplers and tilt rotators.

Mounted on one of the excavators was displaying a double SQ60 quick coupler and tilt rotator combination. Steelwrist says the reason it was showcasing a double SQ quick coupler on one machine was to show its versatility in changing between di erent hydraulic work tools.

Normally, Steelwrist wouldn’t allow a breaker or hammer to be put under a tilt rotator, but in these cases an operator can disconnect the tilt rotator and pick up an attachment such as a hammer.

The SQ quick coupler under the tilt rotator is used on any types of attachment that needs to rotate, such as a bucket.

Occasional users will probably be crimping smaller hoses while moderate commercial users may be crimping larger hoses and will use the crimper more o en.

“We also have industry ready to go users who will use a crimper every day, using it for assembly work,”

Cranswick says.

“They will be building hoses all the time, ve or six days a week, and it’s a big part of their business.”

Cranswick says the Shop In A Box provides a range of di erent bene ts for operators, depending on the type of user.

“It’s a turnkey solution, so it’s a ready-made workbench with a crimper,” he says.

“Operators have the equipment there with them with the Shop In A Box. They’ve got the ttings and the hose and they can do their own repairs in the convenience of their own location.

“It’s a cost-e ective solution to any breakdown that they may have on site or o site.”

Crimper models

The Shop in a Box comes with four crimper models for di erent hose sizes. They are characterised by their crimp capability, which Cranswick says is measured in an industry standard language encompassing a dash before a number.

These dash measurements describe the internal diameter of the tube in a hose.

For example, the PC125 crimper has a crimp capability up to -20 (1.25 inches/31.75mm) for 2-wire braided hoses and up to -16 (1 inch/25.4mm) for four-wire spiral.

Cranswick says the di erence between 2-wire braided hose and four-wire spiral is the way the reinforcement is laid onto the hose.

spiral hoses. The PC150HD has the same crimp capability for 2-wire braided hose but has a higher spiral hose capability of up to -20 (1.25 inches/31.75mm).

The fourth crimper model, PC200i, can crimp 2-wire braided hose up to -32 (2 inches/50.8mm) and up to -32 for 4-wire and 6-wire spiral hoses.

However, the PC200i’s greater crimp capability isn’t the only difference between it and its counterpart models, with Continental also integrating its smart CrimpIQ technology.

“We call the PC200i our IQ crimp because it’s hooked up to the Cloud and Bluetooth,” Cranswick says.

“This technology updates crimp specifications and can keep an eye on your crimp speed so you can see how many crimps the machine has done.”

Operators don’t have to look up crimp specifications with this technology and remote maintenance is also enabled, so it can be monitored from afar.

Having crimp specifications regularly updated through the cloud, Cranswick says the IQ technology can reduce downtime and improve safety for operators.

“When an operator inputs data (hose and fitting types), the correct validated matched crimp spec will be supplied,” he says.

“Incorrect crimp specs can lead to hose failure on site, resulting in downtime.”

operators from guessing crimp specifications and therefore avoids a hose being over or under crimped –potentially causing serious injury in application.

This technology assists operators by presenting the correct crimping dies to be used, which Cranswick says can prevent safety hazards such as pinch points and blow outs.

With Cloud and Wi-Fi connectivity, the technology can also make crimping faster and easier by saving your preferences and user settings.

A 10-inch (25.4cm) touchscreen controller is also included with the PC200i that enables digital

crimping and remote maintenance of the crimper.

Initial feedback has been positive for the Shop In A Box, with Cranswick saying customers are loving its capabilities and the way it works.

Heavy machinery operator Michelle Garrity was looking for a career change when a suggestion to try tra c control led her into the world of Tier One infrastructure projects. Here she speaks with Earthmovers & Excavators about the satisfaction of seeing a site come together and how gender wasn’t a barrier to her achieving her goals

Michelle Garrity has just nished up on site in the east Melbourne suburb of Heatherton as she speaks with Earthmovers & Excavators about what made her look towards the construction industry for a career change.

Currently working for Wagsta Piling, Garrity spends her days operating a variety of machines, from forkli s up to 30-tonne excavators –a far cry from her days as an events planner. When asked how she went from planning corporate dinners to digging trenches, Garrity says it was a recommendation from a friend that put her on the path.

“I’d been in hospitality from the age of 18 and I was ready to try something

di erent when a friend suggested a job in tra c control, so I decided to give it a shot,” she says.

“I went and got my tickets for tra c control and then just progressed in the industry from there. Obviously, when directing tra c, there’s a lot of standing around and watching people operate machines and I thought ‘I wonder if I could do that?’

“Fast forward two years, and with a lot of networking, I got a job as a spotter and the chance to jump in a 20-tonne digger loading trucks whilst the operator was on lunch. This led me to being in that digger full time until that particular contract was up.”

The next step for Garrity was a fouryear stint on the West Gate Tunnel project – a huge undertaking that will provide an alternative to the West Gate Bridge when it opens to motorists in later 2025. First hired

as a labourer, Garrity progressed to operating rollers, small excavators, posi tracks and elevated work platforms, with her nal year there spent in a front end loader.

“I became a machinery operator because I was curious as to how di cult it was,” she says.

“It turned out I really enjoyed it and I like being outdoors and more hands-on with my work. It was a good change from what I was doing before.”

“When I le the West Gate Tunnel Project, I had a good think about where I wanted to go,” she says.

“When I was working for a labour hire company, you’re just a number in a way – they’re not going to put much training or energy into your career.

“I was looking for an employer that was going to invest in my career, but also that had a variety of di erent machines. Wagsta Piling has the diggers, the front end loaders, cranes etc. and they all work on the same job, so there’s the opportunity to hot seat around. I really enjoy that because I can get bored doing the same thing over and over. This provides me with variety.”

Garrity has been working at the SRL site in Heatherton, south east Melbourne, for the past two months and quickly got stuck into operating across a range of machines.

“At the moment I’m bouncing between the 20-tonner and the 13tonner, but we’ve got a forkli on site as well that I jump in,” she says.

“Wagsta have been great. I think it was my fourth day on site when they gave me a 30-tonner to clean up around the piling rig and load out trucks. I’ve been in the digger for the most part since. It’s great to get opportunities like that where they are willing to give me a go.”

Wagsta Piling is a subcontractor for the SRL project and is currently undertaking piling foundations at Heatherton for the construction of a train stabling facility, as well as piling for a tunnel sha in Burwood where

tunnel boring machines for the new rail line will launch.

“We’re currently digging trenches for the guide walls, putting the cages in and pouring them with concrete,” Garrity says.

“We also have a grab machine, which is a crane with a grab bucket on it that grabs material out of the trench, slews it over to the side and shakes it out. So, I’ve been clearing up the waste and loading it into trucks. It’s very messy and muddy but I really enjoy the level of concentration this kind of work requires and how each site has its own challenges to manage.”

Garrity says the variety of work and the opportunities available keep the job interesting.

“I like working on the big projects,” she says.

“I think it’s really cool to see something so large come together and the focus on safety is pretty important as well. Every day brings something different because the sites I’m working on can vary significantly in size. Depending on what tickets you have, you might be working in a different machine, which creates a different workload, and that can change literally from hour to hour.”

Not one to rest on her laurels, Garrity has recently achieved her crane operator ticket.

“I’ve got a fair few tickets as I’ve got the attitude of ‘I’ll give it a crack, see what happens’ and Wagstaff approached me and asked me if I

wanted to go for my crane ticket. I thought ‘Why not? We’ll see where it goes!” she says.

Garrity says her experience as one of the few women operating heavy machinery has been positive overall, even though can be an intimidating prospect when starting out and far more experienced operators are watching those early attempts at working a machine. However, she says the best attitude is to just give it a go and see where it takes you.

“I find myself sometimes wanting to step back and let others do the job instead of me, but I have to remind myself that if I don’t get the time in there, I’m never going to get better,” she says.

“In terms of heavy machinery, if you’re spotting, use that time to watch how the others operate and pick the brains of the operator. If you’re

operating, go slow to start and if you don’t feel confident or comfortable doing something, speak up.

“The majority of the guys on site will help if they can see I need it or if I ask for advice on how to do certain things. You might get some funny looks when you first get in but that dies down once they realise you are just a person trying to do a job.

“You have to earn your stripes, like any job – probably a bit more as a female in construction –but it makes it more rewarding personally in the long run. Be prepared to get dirty and if you give things a crack and try your hardest the guys will respect you for it.”

By following these steps, we can cultivate a supportive workplace where everyone feels valued and supported throughout their journey in balancing work and family responsibilities.

“I would have got the board position because of my skills, not to improve the diversity lens on the board”

At NAWIC we have spoken about the ‘tick box’ in depth. The tick box refers to having someone, in this case a female on a board, in a position without creating real action for change but to simply appear ‘diverse’.

We know women bring:

• real diverse perspectives and lived experiences

• an increase in ethical and social compliance

• a passion to navigate di cult situations with empathy and emotional maturity

• inspiration for future women and generations to see that women can sit on boards and in leadership positions

• a return on equity, sales and environment.

In 2011, Reibey Institute found that over three- and ve-year periods, ASX500 listed companies with women directors delivered signi cantly higher ROI than those companies without any women on

their boards, with a 6.7 per cent and 8.7 per cent increase. In our recent Construction Convos post, we spoke about self- doubt and women in the workplace o en facing feelings of insecurity, with the presence of gender bias and stereotypes leaving women doubting their abilities, and the unequal opportunities and underrepresentation of women leading to imposter syndrome, where women question their skills and value.

Whether you feel you don’t have the skill set to sit on a board, or believe you may have been a ‘tick box’, this is where real change can begin. Being a woman on a board has been statistically shown to bene t companies and organisations and shi the culture. You can create impact by:

• supporting the introduction of more women to your board

• being a role model or mentor to women

• introducing HR policies to support women in exible working, parental leave, menopause or menstruation wellbeing, safety and so many more

• highlighting gender pay gaps within your organisation and advocating for change.

“My shirt and pants would fit” Here is a really important topic. The di culties women encounter with

personal protective equipment (PPE) primarily made for men. In many industries PPE is o en designed with a ‘one size ts all’ approach mainly suited to male body types. It’s a bigger issue than you may think. Some of the issues with ill- tted PPE include:

• poorly tted PPE can lead to safety hazards such as tripping, loose safety harnesses, no protection from weather, no protection from sharp and dangerous equipment and the risk of loose clothing being caught in machinery

• discomfort can cause distraction, impacting job performance, such as: loose boots and not being able to work, constantly feeling the need to rearrange clothing and more

• attracting unwanted comments in regard to clothing not tting

• forcing women in pregnancy to leave roles early due to a lack of tting PPE.

Inclusive and proactive workplaces tend to have happier sta , with higher levels of retention and e ciency.

Organisations need to acknowledge the needs of all their employees and invest in PPE that caters to all. Let’s close this gap and establish an inclusive workplace.

When setting best practice standards for the industry, government needs to ensure that productivity isn’t being impacted in the pursuit of other goals

There has been a lot of recent media interest in the Queensland government’s Best Practice Industry Conditions (BPICs).

Myself and others have been raising this issue for nearly four years since it was rst unveiled as part of the Best Practice Principles (BPPs) in the State Procurement Policy (SPP). It is a bad policy. But let’s sort the wheat from the cha .

BPICs are part of the BPPs, which sit under the SPP. The BPPs are:

• best practice workplace health and safety systems and standards

• best practice commitment to apprentices and trainees

• best practice industrial relations. The industry is not arguing against the rst two requirements, just the third.

Arguments that suggest that without BPICs, work health and safety would be compromised or there would not be a commitment to apprentices and trainees are false. Although BPICs do address these points, they are still addressed by the BPPs, which the industry fully supports.

In addition, the Queensland government’s SPP has a strong ‘buy local’ requirement that doesn’t need to be re ected in the BPICs. Repeating these requirements into enterprise agreements clouds the policing

between industry and appropriate regulators.

The problem with the BPICs is that the government is getting in the middle of the Fair Work Act requirements for agreement making. It is also giving the most militant union, the CFMEU, an opportunity to use elements of BPICs as industrial leverage across our industry. It is important to note that it is the AWU that has the coverage across our industry.

Everyone I speak to in the industry supports their workforce being paid well, but what the BPICs do is create an environment devoid of exibility and productivity that crawls across the whole industry and not just the major projects they are speci ed on.

All segments of the industry are competing for the same pool of labour, but all segments of the industry are not the same. Nor are the companies that work in these segments.

We as taxpayers and consumers must be aware that to get the best bang for our buck we need

What we are seeing is the reverse and this unintended consequence is creating a range of in exible terms and conditions, coupled with in ated wages working their way into the housing market.

Not one dollar can be spent on a house before a dollar is spent on civil infrastructure. Civil infrastructure is the foundation of dwellings regardless of whether they are attached or detached. This housing-enabling infrastructure is getting more and more di cult and expensive to deliver.

This is not blaming the workforce –rather it is blaming poor government policy that, unless xed, will continue to add to the cost of housing at a time where there is a housing shortage and a cost-of-living crisis. The reality is these issues a ect every person in this state and country and the majority do not work in the construction industry.

Whilst it is accepted that in ation over the past few years has added enormous cost to projects, two things need to happen to deliver the infrastructure that is required for housing and capital works:

• capital budgets need increase in line with in ation

• initiatives that improve productivity need to be embraced.

This will include initiatives that improve labour productivity.

I suspect there is little room to increase budgets, and therefore a major focus on productivity will be required.

If the status quo remains, there will be increasingly less infrastructure delivered at ever-increasing costs.

It is pleasing to see that the prime minister has ruled out a federal, Queensland-style BPIC. At least the prime minister has demonstrated the Commonwealth’s commitment to fostering a competitive and sustainable construction industry.

Let’s hope the Queensland government will follow suit.

CoreLogic reports that construction costs are continuing to stabilise

With detached dwelling approvals hitting a 12-year low in January, growth in national construction costs continued to stabilise in the first quarter of 2024, CoreLogic’s Cordell Construction Cost Index (CCCI) shows.

The Q1 2024 national CCCI, which tracks the cost to build a typical new dwelling, recorded a 0.8 per cent rise, on par with the increase seen over the December quarter last year.

This stabilisation in the quarterly trend saw the annual change in the CCCI ease to 2.8 per cent – the smallest annual rise since the year to March 2007 (2.7 per cent) and well below the pre-COVID-19 decade average (4 per cent).

CoreLogic economist Kaytlin Ezzy says while growth in national construction costs have continued to ease from the highs seen through the pandemic, price levels remain elevated.

“The strong fluctuations seen in building material costs over the past few years have levelled out and are now within normal margins,” Ezzy says.

“No clear trend was seen in timber or metal materials, with price changes normalising. Current building costs are still 27.6 per cent higher than at the start of the pandemic, which is likely putting significant pressure on builder’s profit margins.”

Develon launches new DX140RDM-7 demolition excavator in Europe

Develon has launched the new DX140RDM-7 to the European market; the latest addition to the company’s range of demolition excavators. Like the three larger models from 31 to 61 tonnes, the new DX140RDM-7 22.5tonne demolition excavator offers multiple configurations to choose from, providing the customer with a range of solutions depending on the project to be completed, including a multi-purpose version that can be used for other applications on site as well as demolition.

A ‘Monolithic’ variant unique to this model features only a demolition arm without any interchangeability. Alternatively, like the larger machines, the DX140RDM-7 is also available in a dual format utilising a modular boom design and hydraulic lock mechanism, allowing the user to change between different arms for demolition and digging using the same machine.

In the fixed ‘Monolithic’ version of the new DX140RDM-7, the machine can work with a demolition attachment to a maximum height of 16m. The recommended maximum tool weight in this mode is 1,450kg.

In the dual-purpose version of the DX140RDM-7, the pin height and maximum tool weight are 14m and

1,450kg, respectively (with a 2m extension as an option).

A special stand is provided to facilitate the boom changing operation, which is based on quickchange hydraulic and mechanical coupler connections. A cylinderbased system is used to push the locking pins into place to help complete the procedure.

The multi-boom design also allows the earthmoving boom to be mounted in two different ways, which with the demolition boom, provides further flexibility with a total of three different configurations for the dualpurpose base machine.

The DX140RDM-7 has a hydraulically-adjustable undercarriage, which extends to a maximum width of 3.7m. The width of the undercarriage can be retracted hydraulically to 2.5m in the narrow width position for transport. The mechanism is based on a permanently lubricated, internal cylinder design that minimises resistance during the movement and helps to prevent damage to the components, Develon says.

Regulation required

Stage 1 of new regulation a ecting commercial building contractors has begun in the Northern Territory

Commercial builder contractor registration has now come into e ect in the Northern Territory, covering building contractors undertaking Class 1b and 3-9 building work.

The amendments to the Building Act 1993 that were passed earlier this year introduced registration for commercial builders as well as expanding powers to introduce a continuing professional development scheme to ensure building practitioners are up to date with the latest building rules, regulations and practices.

The legislation will be rolled out in two stages.

Stage 1 provides a 12-month transition for builders to obtain a commercial registration. During the

transition period, a grandfathering initiative provides for current experienced NT builders to be registered without needing to meet quali cation requirements. A builder who wants to grandfather into the commercial registration scheme and has the requisite three years’ experience in Class 1B or Class 3-9 buildings in the NT has until 14 April 2025 to apply.

Stage 2 commences 12 months a er Stage 1 when it becomes a legal requirement to have a registered commercial builder for new commercial building work.

greater con dence and safety to the community and reinforcing trust in the local building industry, the state government says.

An exception to the registration will be for renovations or alterations to an existing building if there is no increase in oor area or height, provided there is no alteration or removal of any structural support elements and there is no change in use that impacts on compliance with the National Construction Code or changes the building classi cation.

Caterpillar has updated its PM300 cold planer series

Caterpillar has announced that its PM310, PM312 and PM313 cold planer models now feature multiple design enhancements that help to improve machine performance, operating comfort and milling power.

These planers have been designed for small to medium applications where a compact machine is required.

The latest PM300 models integrate the Cat C9.3B engine that delivers an increase in gross power and more available torque, based on standard performance testing.

O ering a gross power rating of 256kW (343 horsepower), the Cat C9.3B engine features lower complexity and improved electronic, fuel and air systems. Easier access to engine oil lters simpli es maintenance, while multipiece, cartridge-style engine lters reduce waste and lower replacement costs.

The latest PM300 series design includes a redesign of the transition ashing between primary and loading conveyors, improving containment of material and reducing build-up on the front machine frame. Further containment of material is achieved through feature enhancements to the right-hand side plate, chamberto-conveyor sealing and loading conveyor belt sealing.

Operators can now track the cutting edge from either side of the machine and ground personnel can also now control the obstacle jump capability from the rear ground controls.

Hitachi develops operator assist for ultra-large excavators and begins 24/7 haul system monitoring

Hitachi Construction Machinery has developed an operator assist system aimed at supporting the digging and loading operations of ultra-large hydraulic excavators.

Aiming to improve operational performance, the company is conducting a veri cation test at one of Rio Tinto’s Australian mine sites.

Through the application of the operator assist system, mine sites will bene t from reduced operator burden, improved mine site safety, increased productivity and reduced fuel consumption, Hitachi says.

The veri cation test is being performed at an iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Sensors, monitors and other equipment have been attached to a backhoe EX3600-7 ultra-large hydraulic excavator (operating weight of 326.6 tonnes) to conduct both a performance veri cation test of digging and loading tasks by the operator assist system and additional veri cation of the usability of the monitor display installed in the operator cab.

customers, such as through this partnership with Rio Tinto, Hitachi aims to achieve practical application of the operator assist system in stages from 2025.

The system will enable retro tting support for the EX-7 series of ultra-large hydraulic excavator models EX2000-7 through to EX8000-7 backhoe front speci cation machines.

Hitachi Construction Machinery has also announced that it has begun 24/7 remote monitoring of Australian mine sites that use its Autonomous Haulage System for dump trucks, from a Technological Centre of Excellence in Brisbane.

At the centre, the same information that customers are getting in their mine control room is monitored in real time. The information is analysed to help derive solutions for the issues faced by each customer to help streamline and optimise their operations.

Asphalter MR-Roads has launched a new community program in Queensland to x carpark potholes

MR-Roads has announced the launch of a new community program, which sees it donating asphalt mix and crew to repair damaged carparks in schools, hospitals, charities and small businesses across South East Queensland.

The initiative will see as much as four tonnes of unused asphalt redeployed each week – the equivalent of roughly 75 potholes a month, valued at $16,000.

“We’re seeing so many more deteriorating carparks than ever before, due to the past few years of heavy rainfall, and we know this can be quite costly to x, particularly for schools and community clubs,” MR-Roads co-founder and co-CEO James Rolph says.

“Pothole and carpark repairs can cost in the thousands of dollars, which means they o en get de-prioritised and le for up to months at a time, which has huge consequences for the people who use them.”

The program invites local organisations within a 100km radius of North Lakes, Brisbane to apply for one-o , pro-bono repairs to their damaged carpark.

North Brisbane health club Fitness Cartel at Kippa Ring was the rst to receive support under the program, with MR-Roads donating $3,600 of repairs to mend an eight square metre diameter pothole at the centre of its member carpark.

A Fitness Cartel Health Clubs spokesperson says members and sta had been avoiding the

main section of the carpark for months, hindering access to the gym entrance.

“We were so thrilled to have MRRoads reach out and o er to x our carpark,” the spokesperson says.

“Without them we’d probably still have people driving around to avoid hitting it. Now, the entire area is just a smooth, seamless experience and is a lot safer for everyone.

“As a small business, getting the money to x potholes doesn’t typically rank high on our priority list, so having access to this kind of support is just phenomenal.”

MR-Roads co-founder and co-CEO Daniel Mikus says increasing rainfall and severity of weather conditions in Queensland will continue to impact roads and carparks, and more support was needed to reduce the pressure.

just cause issues for motorists and pedestrians, it impacts the community’s perception of a business. It also puts the business at risk of litigation if damage caused is signi cant enough,” Mikus says.

“Cracks will form as part of the natural life cycle of a road, but when water gets into these cracks, it will start to deteriorate the sublayers of the asphalt, and basically it will so en the soil until it caves in.

“We’ve had a few years of heavy rain and so it’s natural we’re seeing an increase in potholes and road damage. What’s not helpful is that costs of construction have increased at the same time, and so it puts a lot of our small local businesses in a tough position – pay money they don’t have to x the damage, or put the community at risk.

“Keeping our local areas safe for everyone should be a priority and so we’re really excited today to bring this program to life and give back.”

FAE ails

FAE has renewed its line of flail mulchers for 1.8–6.8 tonne excavators

FAE has announced the expansion of its ail mulcher line for small excavators with the new PML/ EX family for 2–7.5 ton (1.8–6.8 tonne) excavators. The new line replaces the PML/HY and PMM/HY lines and the previous version of the PML/EX.

The new PML/EX can mulch light vegetation, shrubs and trees up to 5cm in diameter. Light and compact, FAE says the new range is speci cally suited for managing and protecting wildlife habitats and maintaining commercial parks and sports grounds.

The head is designed for high productivity, durability and easy installation and maintenance.

The PML/EX’s Direct Drive motor minimises maintenance and allows for a smaller machine body for better manoeuvrability. With a ow regulator valve built into the motor and a thumb bracket integrated into the frame, the head maintains a clean pro le and compact build, FAE says.

The hydraulic motor is compatible with excavators that do not have a drainage line, making the head easier to install. This feature makes the head a plug-and-play piece of equipment.

The new PML/EX can be equipped with PML hammers or Y- ails and comes with operating widths of either 75, 100, 125, or 150cm.

A 8.9-tonne Bobcat E88 mini excavator has been deployed on the Stockholm Bypass road tunnel project in Sweden and has been speci cally modi ed for work in ventilation sha s.

Bobcat says the modi cations were made to meet the special regulations of underground works in the mining region in Kiruna, in the north of Sweden.

The Stockholm Bypass project is one of Sweden’s largest infrastructure projects, including a series of underground motorway tunnels between the Kungens Kurva interchange in the south of Stockholm and the Häggvik interchange north of Stockholm. Most of this bypass, more than 17 out of 21km, is being built underground.

The bypass will become the world’s third longest road tunnel in the proximity of a city, a er the Westconnex Tunnel in Sydney and the Yamate Tunnel in Tokyo. Over 140,000 vehicles per day are expected to use the bypass.

The Bobcat E88 in Stockholm was originally adapted to meet the special regulations of underground works in the mining region in Kiruna in the north of Sweden. The heavily modi ed E88 excavator was delivered to Bergteamet AB, a specialist sha and tunnel contractor, for work on the tunnel’s ventilation sha s.

As part of the modi cations needed on the E88, it was decided that the ability to remote control the excavator was needed to increase the safety of both the work and the environment. The excavator also needed to be modi ed to protect it for working in the harsh environment of the underground vertical sha s. Bergteamet has been using the Bobcat E88 to sink ventilation sha s for the Stockholm Bypass project. One of the rst was at Lovön at Drottningholm outside Stockholm. The process used to construct the sha s begins with making a circular hole at ground level using blasting and hauling the material away.

The next step is to li the E88 into place in the hole created at the top of the sha , where the articulated boom allows the machine to t in the sha , from where, it can be remote controlled to manoeuvre it into a better position if needed. This includes the use of on-board cameras driven from a control room, away from any hazardous areas.

The E88 is equipped with a tiltrotator, allowing it to be used with a breaker to remove loose material as well as an attachment for rock scaling work. It also has water connections for dust control.

Eva Copper Mine Project named prescribed project

The new Queensland copper mine is expected to generate hundreds of jobs in the area

The Eva Copper Mine Project, located near Mt Isa and Cloncurry in Queensland, has been declared a prescribed project by the Queensland government, which will help boost its progression.

The mine, located on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon People, is anticipated to operate for at least 15 years and generate up to 1,250 jobs in construction and operations and extend the life of existing local copper mining and smelting jobs. It is expected to be the largest copper mine in North West Queensland.

“With our critical mineral resources and growing list of projects we are ready to be the home to renewableslinked mining, manufacturing and exporting,” Queensland minister for state development and infrastructure Grace Grace says.

“The Eva Copper Mine Project plans to provide a new source of copper concentrate that has the potential to feed Mount Isa’s copper smelter.

“Harmony Gold Mining Company already has key mining approvals for the project and my prescribed project declaration means the O ice of the Coordinator-General can now provide additional assistance to coordinate remaining approvals.”

A NSW government program is boosting women in construction in the state

As part of the NSW Women in Construction program, numerous projects are piloting increased targets for women in trades and non-traditional construction roles across the state.

The NSW government announced that the Women in Construction Infrastructure Skills Legacy Program has funded 16 project o cers on 19 government infrastructure projects across the state, including:

• Powerhouse Parramatta, Parramatta

• Wentworth Point New High School, Wentworth Point

• M7/M12 Integration Project, Cecil Park

• Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick

• Newell Highway Upgrade –New Dubbo Bridge, Dubbo.

“The Infrastructure Skills Legacy Program is a key program to make sure we boost the number of women in the sector in a targeted way, by supporting their employment, upskilling and retention,” NSW minister for women Jodie Harrison says.

The NSW government says the project o cers directly support contractors and sub-contractors to achieve the targets set out, and will identify and report on progress,

lessons learnt, issues and barriers, and develop strategies to achieve these targets.

Early reports indicate positive progress, with an increase in women’s participation on the pilot project sites.

With an investment of $117 billion into the infrastructure pipeline over the next four years, the NSW government says the need to diversify the construction workforce is not just a priority, but a necessity.

Planning to leverage data from these pilot projects, the state government will be able to assess the viability of implementing mandatory female participation targets for all future government infrastructure projects.

José Cuadrado has been announced as the new global CEO for Yanmar CE

Effective April 1, 2024, José Cuadrado is the new global CEO at Yanmar CE and chairman of the board at Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd.

Cuadrado replaces Giuliano Parodi who transferred to manage the Yanmar Group’s Strategy Division, as chief strategy officer.

Over the past 25 years Cuadrado has worked at brands that include Ingersol Rand, Doosan and CNH Industrial. He joined Yanmar CE in early 2023, and is moving from the role of managing director of the company’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region. A search has begun for his replacement, and Cuadrado will combine both global CEO and EMEA roles until his successor is appointed, from his current base in Europe.

In his new role Cuadrado is responsible for leading increased organisational integration and improving financial performance, as well as further product development.

“I fully support our current strategy to become a leader in the compact equipment industry,” Cuadrado says.

Tunnel turn

Two Vögele pavers have been involved in the construction of the Zoji-La tunnel in India

Construction of Asia’s longest road tunnel is currently underway, stretching 13km between the Ladakh and Kashmir regions, and two Universal Class pavers from Vögele were used for paving work inside and outside the tunnel.

With the tunnel located at an altitude of close to 3,500m in the Himalayas, up until now it usually took vehicles more than three hours to cross the Zoji-La Pass.

Between November and May, heavy snowfall, avalanches and landslides make it impossible to cross the pass, meaning that the border region of Ladakh depends on airfreight for six months of the year. The new tunnel will shorten the travel time between Srinagar (Kashmir) and Leh (Ladakh) to 15 minutes and establish a safe, all-year-round connection between the two cities.

Lead contractor Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd. used a Vögele Super 1400i for the paving work inside the tunnel. The paving team laid down a 6m-wide layer of dry lean concrete with a thickness of 18cm. For the paving of the 16.4km-long and 10.5mwide section outside the tunnel, including access roads and bridges, the contractor deployed a second Universal Class paver, a Super 18003i, in combination with an AB 600 TV extending screed.

The team laid down a total of three layers with the Super 18003i: the 10cm cement-treated subbase layer was followed by an 11cm binder course with a mix formulated especially for the terrain. Finally, a 6cm surface course of bituminous concrete was paved on top. The

mix used for paving consisted partly of material removed during the construction of the tunnel – which increased the costefficiency and sustainability of the construction project.

To ensure true to grade and slope paving of the three layers, the paving team took advantage of the Niveltronic Plus system for automated grade and slope control. This can be combined with a variety of different sensors, with the paving team using a crossslope sensor and a height sensor to enable them to cope with the bends and uphill and downhill gradients in the challenging terrain of the Zoji-La Pass.

Volvo CE has expanded its US demolition excavator range

The new demolition excavator gives operators an additional 30 per cent increase in pin height over the standard boom, Volvo CE says.

A 25.5 (7.8m) straight boom is tted to the EC500 and is also equipped with numerous heavy-duty features to withstand vigorous work.

“The EC500 straight boom gives customers a new 50-ton (45tonne) option for larger jobs and perfectly complements our three high reach models as well as our 14-ton (12.7-tonne) to 95-ton (86.2tonne) standard excavators that o er demolition-speci c guarding and hydraulic options,” Volvo CE demolition strategic accounts director Tony den Hoed says.

In addition to the straight boom and purpose-built arm, the EC500 straight boom has a 2,998kg heavier counterweight for added stability. When moving from site to site the counterweights can be removed using a hydraulic removal feature.

To protect the machine during demolition work, Volvo CE says it is reinforced with boom/bucket cylinder protection, full track guards, heavy-duty belly covers and heavyduty side doors.

Volvo CE says in an industry rst, the case drain line is plumbed directly to its tank, returning oil directly back to the tank and not to a case drain circuit, reducing back pressure on the rotation circuit.

Develon has launched the new DX17Z-7 zero tail swing and DX19-7 conventional Stage V compliant mini excavators to the European market

Develon says the DX17Z-7 and DX19-7 models provide increased performance, versatility, operator comfort and easier maintenance than the previous generation of machines.

Both models have a Kubota D902 Stage V diesel engine, with Develon saying it provides a 20 per cent higher gross power output of 12.1kW at 2,400 rpm.

Develon also says the engine o ers 25 per cent greater displacement and a 29 per cent increase in engine torque to 54.6Nm at 1,900 rpm.

“This will translate into high overall reliability and reduced strain on the engine and other components,” Develon says.

“Featuring the new shared global styling for the next generation Develon mini-excavator range, the novel platform design and new upper structures in the DX17Z-7 and DX19-7 provide increased durability and robustness.”

With compact designs, both machines are suited to work in con ned spaces on construction, landscaping and utility projects.

Both models feature a 1.75m boom and 1.03m arm as standard, with an

optional longer arm (1.23m) available for both models.

Develon says the front assembly in both models is protected by cylinder guards to avoid collisions or any kind of potential damage, with a hydraulic hose layout that is protected by the boom structure.

“This reduces the risk of hose damage and failure, minimising the need for repairs and downtime and increasing equipment productivity and e ciency,” the company says.

With quick coupler piping available on both models, Develon says operators can switch to using a quick coupler by pressing a safety button on the le console – bringing up a warning message on the digital display in the cab to notify the operator. The operator can then push a button on the right-hand joystick to begin quick-coupler work.

The excavators come with 230mm retractable tracks, where the width between the tracks can be reduced from 1,290mm to 994mm, and both machines have a foldable blade.

Construction has commenced on the conversion of the Northern Rhondda Colliery to a new motorsports park

The historic coal mine Northern Rhondda Colliery, located in Teralba on the outskirts of Newcastle, NSW will be converted into a motorsports park after the sale was finalised recently.

Northern Rhondda Colliery, named after a coalfield in Wales by Welsh immigrants who worked at the mine, began operation in 1900.

After operations ceased in 1970, rehabilitation work was undertaken and completed in 2008, which included site remediation and revegetation. The site has been operated by Australian coal mining company Yancoal since 2017.

With the NSW government determining the rehabilitation to be complete, Elemonop Pty Ltd has now begun construction of the Black Rock Motor Sport Park, with the first sod turned on March 26.

Developer Dantia says the new site will be Australia’s first dedicated recreation resort for motoring fans, with the $95 million project including a 5.25km track, go-kart track, driver training, accommodation, a function centre and café. The developer will take responsibility for the management of certain ongoing rehabilitation matters, such as subsidence crack repairs, erosion controls and implementation of a bushfire management plan.

The off-highway market is predicted to stabilise

Market analysis firm Interact Analysis says there are encouraging signs for the global off-highway market in 2024 following a turbulent few years, as supply chain issues resolve themselves and the market appears to be returning to a more stable business cycle.

The post-COVID-19 boom is coming to an end and global unit sales are forecast to be smaller in 2024 than last year, but steady long-term growth is anticipated as increasing mechanisation in emerging markets drives sales, it says.

Interact Analysis predicts that construction sales will slow in many countries for a range of different reasons, including high inflation and interest rates, which are curbing spending, housebuilding and infrastructure development.

However, persistent, long-term growth is being seen in emerging economies as the rate of adoption of mechanisation gathers momentum.

India, South-East Asia and Brazil are expected to see wider adoption of machinery, driven by rising wages and demand to increase food output.

In terms of engine type, despite the increasing use of electrified machines, internal combustion engine (ICE) sales (including hybrids) are forecast to continue growing out to 2035, pushed up by low-power ICE machines in agriculture, construction and lift-trucks.

very low as lack of clear regulations and comparatively high upfront costs continue to constrain sales.

This is with the exception of forklifts and aerial work platforms (AWPs), where penetration rates are already high. After 2030, battery electric sales volumes are forecast to accelerate, rising to 350,000 units sold annually by 2035, with high volumes expected in APAC and strong penetration rates in EMEA and the Americas.

“Lower power machinery will continue to dominate both ICE and battery electric sales in 2024,” Interact Analysis senior research director Alastair Hayfield says.

“Most ICE engine sales will be in the sub-100kW category, with 75 per cent of those below 55kW. Furthermore, machinery under 230kW constitutes the overwhelming bulk of battery electric sales, and almost all battery electric machines sold are likely to be under 100kW in power this year, reflecting the ongoing cost and technical challenges of electrifying larger machinery.

“Moving forward we expect the off-highway low-power/low margin engine market in APAC and the off-highway high-power/high margin engine markets in EMEA and North America to be hotly contested, particularly as sales of automotive and on-road commercials decline.”

The Queensland government has announced further funding for Stage 1 of the Coomera Connector project

The Queensland government has announced that it will commit an additional $432 million to the Coomera Connector Stage 1 to help cover the rising cost of labour and materials and the demand for specialist construction equipment. The state government is now looking for a matching contribution from the federal government.

The Coomera Connector will provide an alternative route to the M1 for local journeys and will alleviate M1 congestion by accommodating an estimated 60,000 daily trips, the state government says.

Stage 1 covers 16km, from Coomera to Nerang, and features additional bridge crossings at the Coomera and Nerang Rivers. A shared user path is now included in the design.

Stage 1 North of the project is currently underway, with community consultation ongoing for Stage 1 Central and tenders being assessed for the Stage 1 South package. Stage 1 North will open progressively from late 2025.

Due to the rising cost of labour and materials, as well as the industry supply and demand challenges for specialist construction equipment, a further $864 million is required to complete Stage 1.

Some of the cost pressures for Stage 1 are due to double-digit market escalation and inflation since the

business case was approved in 2021 and the presence of contamination including PFAS chemicals and asbestos on site.

Other factors have also contributed to the increase, including changing design standards, the evolving scope of works through the design process, such as six-laning the Central package, as well as the increased scope of environmental investigations and management plans and adverse ground conditions discovered in the design process.

“The Coomera Connector will provide significant benefits, helping to ease traffic congestion between the Gold Coast and Logan and enabling locals to avoid the M1, and to make shorter and easier trips,” Queensland manager for transport and main roads Bart Mellish says.

“Cost increases are not unexpected in the current economic climate, and the Coomera Connector project is not immune to these pressures.

“We have committed our share of this additional cost because we recognise how critical the Coomera Connector is not only for South East Queensland, but also our state’s economic prosperity.”

Flood resilience

GHD awarded improvement contract for 8km of Stuart Highway

The NT government has awarded a $350,000 contract to GHD Pty Ltd to design flood immunity improvements on an 8km stretch of the Stuart Highway near Daly Waters, south of Katherine.

The work is part of the federal and NT governments’ jointly funded $217 million Northern Territory Industry Roads program, which will upgrade priority roads.

The construction ready design will include an engineering survey and geotechnical investigation on this key transport and logistics route.

In addition to providing flood resilience to this section of the Stuart Highway, the project will improve connectivity, freight productivity and access, road safety and access to health and social services for remote communities.

The construction tender will be released once the designs are completed, with works to commence mid-2025.

Planning is underway to determine the scope of the remaining upgrades to be delivered under the Northern Territory Industry Roads program.

The NT government is also planning for and delivering long-term upgrades along Central Arnhem Road, which connects Nhulunbuy to the Stuart Highway. Douglas Partners Pty Ltd has been awarded a $990,000 contract to undertake geotechnical investigations on the Central Arnhem Road to inform three upgrade packages to improve flood immunity, road safety, travel time and accessibility.

Melbourne’s Wyndham City Council is participating in a project that will see recycled plastic used in road construction

Wyndham City council has announced its participation in a collaborative project that aims to incorporate recycled plastic from consumer and industrial waste into road construction.

Partnering with RMIT University, Austroads, the Department of Transport and nine other councils, Wyndham City says soft plastics have been shown to enhance the performance of asphalt.

A total of 170 tonnes of plasticmodified asphalt containing 600kg of recycled plastic will be trialled in a section of road in Cambridge Crescent, Wyndham Vale.

“Our aim for this project is to increase the use of recycled plastics in road construction across our city and to provide reusable guidelines for local councils wishing to increase the sustainability of their roads,” Wyndham City councillor Robert Szatkowski says.

Along with RMIT and Austroads, Wyndham City council says the project includes Australia’s leading pavement authorities and specialists, including public works and building bodies, recyclers and contractors.

It will be coordinated under the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Transformation of Reclaimed Waste Resources to Engineered Materials and Solutions for a Circular Economy.

RMIT University project lead Filippo Giustozzi says extensive laboratory studies conducted for Austroads show these mixes are mechanically, chemically and environmentally sound.

“The performance of roads can actually be improved with the additions of recycled material, such as plastic and rubber, to be more durable against traffic and resistant against ageing,” he says.

Wage funding

The WA government has announced an additional $21.5 million to expand the Group Training Organisation (GTO) Wage Subsidy Program

An additional 150 places for apprentices will be funded through the 2024–25 State Budget and made available to GTOs immediately.

The program enables GTOs to provide opportunities for Western Australians to complete an apprenticeship, through paid hands-on skills training across a diverse range of projects.

The GTO Wage Subsidy provides up to $135,000 for a four-year apprenticeship, to cover the average estimated award wage of full-time apprentices working in small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the building and construction industry.

The program helps to grow the supply of skilled workers for the building and construction industry across a variety of trades including carpentry, electrical and plumbing and gasfitting.

SMEs can engage with a GTO to become a host employer for apprentices and trainees.

To support Western Australian construction businesses to fill the demand for a skilled workforce the state government has also introduced an $11 million Construction Visa Subsidy Program.

The program will provide grant payments of up to $10,000 to support skilled migration visa pathways for workers and help offset costs such as migration agent fees, visa application fees and relocation expenses.

Mining safety report highlights areas for improvement

Queensland’s Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health has released a new report, The State of Safety Reporting Culture in Queensland’s Mining Industry, utilising responses from a 2023 survey of over 7,800 people working in the state’s mining industry that aimed to identify strength and opportunity areas in Queensland’s mining and quarrying industry to achieve a stronger safety reporting culture.

Strengths identified include: teams typically look out for each other and support each other to work safely; frontline leaders encourage teams to take appropriate action if something feels unsafe; mine workers usually report their safety concerns and are encouraged to do so by leaders; and there is a high awareness of internal reporting escalation pathways, with 83 per cent of participants knowing how to escalate safety concerns internally. In terms of what could be improved, feedback included: making reporting systems clearer and easier to use; improving feedback to workers on the outcomes of incidents as this improves worker confidence in reporting; senior leaders should visit work areas more often to increase their

interaction with frontline workers; better recognition of positive safety behaviours; improving planning around timeframes allows workers to focus on performing work safely; and better involvement of frontline workers in safety initiatives reinforces safety behaviours.

“The report establishes a baseline of the safety reporting behaviours exhibited at mine and quarry sites and sets a benchmark for the industry to measure its safety reporting culture against in the future,” Queensland resources safety and health acting commissioner Andrew Clough says.

“The survey was conducted by my office in cooperation with the tripartite Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee.

“The report identified a number of opportunity areas for industry and the safety and health advisory committees to target for further research and continuous improvement.”

From May 1, 2024 Epiroc’s Tools & Attachments division will be split into two new divisions: rock drilling tools and mining & infrastructure attachments.

“With past growth and now the ongoing acquisition of Stanley Infrastructure, our largest acquisition ever, our tools and attachments business is expanding significantly,” Epiroc president and CEO Helena Hedblom says.

The tools division will cover the following areas: tophammers and handheld drilling tools; down the hole, rotary and raiseboring hammers; and ground support tools.

The attachments division will cover: ground engaging tools; hydraulic attachment tools and the Stanley Infrastructure brand.

“By dividing up the business into two dedicated divisions, we are optimising the focus for all the business lines and supporting sustainable, profitable growth,” Hedblom says.

Current senior vice president of M&A, strategy and supply chain Martin Hjerpe will become president of the tools division.

Goran Popovski, currently president of the tools & attachments division, will become president of the new attachments division.

The Stanley Infrastructure acquisition is expected to be completed around the end of the first quarter 2024.

A er 30 years in business, Skyreach is still o ering new solutions for any challenge thrown its way

Founded in the Brisbane suburb of Geebung by current managing director Rod Leech in 1994, and set to turn 30 in May, Skyreach is a pioneer of Australia’s access hire industry. When it rst started, access equipment providers were thin on the ground in Australia, and the vast majority of the machines then in the rental market at the time were second hand units from the US.

Skyreach product and training specialist James Nightingale says the company set out to be di erent, purchasing brand new machines that provided customers with the latest safety features, o ered simplicity of use, versatility on site and also increased productivity for the operators.

Today Skyreach is one of Australia’s largest rental providers of access and material handling equipment such as telehandlers, forkli s and elevated work platforms – including manli s, scissorli s and boomli s.

It has branches all along Australia’s East Coast, in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane (with branches in Caboolture and Yatala), Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.

The company provides equipment to a broad cross section of industries and sectors including construction, civil, industrial, manufacturing, mining, defence and lm and entertainment.

Nightingale says Skyreach has a simple philosophy when it comes to the equipment it purchases.

Skyreach’s elevated work platform range encompasses:

• Single manlifts from 12ft (3.6m) to 26ft (8m)

• Scissorlifts from 13ft (3.8m) up to 105ft (32.2m)

• Boomlifts from 45ft (13.7m) to 156ft (47.7m)

• Knuckle booms from 34ft (10.6m) to 156ft (47.7m)

The company also o ers:

• Track mounted scissors/booms – some able to operate on slopes up to 16 degrees

• Speed level scissors – which can operate and drive on slopes up to 14 degrees

• Xtra capacity booms – able to carry 450kg or three people and operate on slopes up to 7 degrees

• Hybrid booms & scissors – can operate as fully electric machines and can be recharged from the machine’s own onboard generator during operation

• Lightweight boomlifts – specialised lightweight machines for suspended slab jobs

• Outrigger boomlifts – boomlifts with outriggers working on slopes up to 19 degrees

• Spider lifts – lightweight boomlifts running on rubber non-marking tracks for indoor applications and also utilising outriggers to operate on uneven ground outside (these machines also have the ability to switch between diesel and electric modes)

A good example of this principle in action is when the company was approached by Aus-Rack Installations to provide safe access for them to build the racking for two major supermarket warehouse construction projects (one in Brisbane and one in Sydney).

The extreme height of the racking, the weight they needed to li and the limited width between racks meant that Aus-Rack needed special narrow electric scissorli s that would reach 31 metres high.

“No one had machines like these in Australia,” Nightingale says.

“We then investigated what products were available internationally and were able to source electric scissorli s from a specialist German manufacturer that provided the reach, weight li ing ability and narrow footprint that our customer required.

“We provided the customer with a 1.4m wide machine and a 2.4m wide machine, both of which were able to li 750kg up to the required working height.

“Over the course of both projects, these machines remained on site for over two years – to this customer and to other subcontractors.”

Skyreach can also o er Yellow Card training and Veri cation Of Competence (VOC) training on its equipment on site.

“This ensures that our customers are correctly quali ed to operate our equipment and the VOC training provides make and model speci c training on each machine they are using on site,” Nightingale says.
