Single? Taken? Always Hungry.

What the world really needs is more love and less paperwork. - Pearl Bailey

H

ey friends – those closest to me will tell you that those two words are my most expressive. If that’s how I greet you, I might as well be saying “I love you” – indirectly, but with a lot more enthusiasm. It turns out that, after an entire month of typing the word Valentine’s hundreds of times, I’m still no closer to figuring out how I really feel about this annual and very corporate celebration of love. On one hand, February 14 in all its candy, card and flowers glory is a commercially-driven day, and on the other it’s when love-budding wild hearts, both young and old, get to do something special for one another. Who wants to get bitter about that? Not me. For all the right reasons, Valentine’s Day in Bahrain can be your most memorable yet – and you know that this island doesn’t do things unless it’s all the way up to 100. Turn to p25 and check out Show Me Love where we bring you everything from dinner dates, sweet afternoon treats, spa indulgence, romantic revelry, and beautiful gifts to inspire your plans! If you’re really looking to impress, head straight to p54 and check out this month’s Staycation Spotlight at the instagram-worthy Westin City Centre Bahrain. A few days here and you’ll be in the good books for a very long time! My very own love affair, with the one thing that never lets me down in Bahrain (or life) continues this month. You’ve guessed it: F.O.O.D. For all the palate-pleasing pleasures in the country, we’ve tasted some of the most amazing cuisines and dishes in town this month. Our Brunch Focus takes us to the Khaleeji delicacies of Furn Bistro, an iconic dining destination that stays true to its roots with a spread worthy of royalty (p87). In Foodie Corner, casual dining is elevated to show that it’s a serious contender in the food game at the hidden gem that is Phoenix Restaurant (p91), and in the Culinary Spotlight, we stop by an old favourite that still remains relevant today - the timeless, romantic and the perfect spot for a guaranteed delicious date night – Sato (p83). We have some fabulous news this month as the FACT Bahrain team expands and we welcome onboard our new Local Editor, Elanur Sengel. Ready to eat her way though the island’s dynamic dining scene and get up close with Bahrain’s creative community, we’re excited to have Elanur join us going forwards and you’ll be seeing more of her lovely words in the magazine starting this month. That’s what I call love; your favourite Netflix series on the TV and a table full of takeout to share with all your “hey friends” people. Plus, the only thing better than a Christmas playlist is a cheesy Valentine’s playlist – nothing better than a little Luther Vandross to annoy – I mean, motivate, the whole office, right? Of course, a shiny diamond or a plane ticket to Paris wouldn’t hurt too... a girl can only dream. ☺

C

rossroads literally means an intersection of two or more roads. Crossroads café and restaurant is a rendezvous for friends, family and coworkers to meet and enjoy delicious hearty meals in a bright, cosy and modern ambience. Crossroads is not just a point of meeting but also a meeting of different flavours and cuisines of different origin, embodied in an inspiring menu. It’s a unique take on a symphonic combination of influences from around the world, on that will be known by its own diverse identity. As an idiomatic expression, “crossroads” also means “at a point when a choice must be made; at a point of change”. Crossroads is a point where guests, with their choice of meal, experience a wonderful uplifting change in their day; a more refreshing start after breakfast, a more motivated work ethic after a welldeserved lunch break, or a relaxing and indulging dinner after a tough day in the office. It is easy, delicious, casual and urban. Crossroads’ simplistic approach will offer a feeling of at-ease that will make 10

guests come for the “comfort food” and stay for the unique contemporary twists. The objective is to make guests, especially the local community, feel that the restaurant is like their second kitchen. Using a warm and familiar approach to make them feel completely chilled out. The venue will have added quirks, wit and fun – the staff will take their product seriously, but themselves… not so much! Serving up everything from vibrant breakfast concoctions to fresh hearty lunches, and satisfying dinners, Crossroads’ food will tell stories that are relatable and reminiscent. Instaworthy packaging and presentation, teamed with an on-trend and sustainable approach to cutlery, tableware and more will further please conscious diners. CAREEM X UNHCR AIDS THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES In showcasing the impact of its partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) that was established in 2017, Careem has announced the total number of refugees supported in the MENA region through donations - collected via its rewards programme – to be 12,395. Refugees were supported with cash assistance for rent, utilities, heating, and health care costs. The funds, which were donated by Careem customers through the Careem REWARDS programme and UNHCR car type, have an important impact on the everyday lives of refugees. The donations will provide support to vulnerable refugee families in the region, with cash assistance, helping them cover their most basic necessities, such as food, healthcare services, heating and housing. “Due to the prolonged nature of the crises in the region, refugees are more vulnerable to debt, with many living in extreme poverty, and relying on UNHCR’s cash assistance programme in order to make ends meet,” said Houssam Chahine, UNHCR’s Chief of Private Sector Partnerships, in MENA. “With limited resources, and widening funding gaps, UNHCR looks at the wider community, including the private sector for support. Partnerships such as the one with Careem and the generous donations of its customers, are a vital lifeline to many refugees, and a great example of using corporate platforms for driving social impact,” he added. Director of Careem’s loyalty programme, Nizar Chehade, said: “We are extremely thankful for having the ability to improve people’s lives through Careem offerings. Knowing that we helped support 18

fact magazine

over 12,000 refugees through customer donations is humbling, and will hopefully set an example for companies and entrepreneurs in the region. Careem’s mission is to simplify and improve the lives of people, and build an awesome organization that inspires: those were guiding principles when we designed the program. I am hopeful that such initiatives will inspire others in the region to start something and make a positive impact.” Points generated through Careem Rewards can be converted into credit appearing in the app wallet to spend on Careem rides, or used to fund UNHCR’s cash assistance programme to help and empower refugee communities. Careem Rewards is active on all 33 million Careem users’ apps giving points on all rides paid by cash, card, or invoice and in any country in which they are riding with Careem. ✤

WHEN A GROUP OF GIRLS GET TOGETHER FOR A NIGHT IN, IT’S ALL ABOUT GOOD-OLD FASHIONED FUN AND LOADS OF LAUGHS. CONVERSATION GAME STRONG, COMFY PJS ON TO SLAY AND THE BEST TIME WITH ALL THEIR FAVOURITE HUMANS!

Baker’s Delight

Home Spa Day There is no better way to have a relaxed evening than to gather your girlfriends and indulge in some much-needed pampering whilst watching a chick flick on the telly. Stock up on face masks, eye masks, foot scrubs and any beauty hack that is fun and easy to make use of at home. Slip into your pjs and robes and get ready for some quality rejuvenation. Mani-pedi kits are also a big hit at pamper slumber parties and, much to our delight, there are plenty of salons in the city that provide home calls. So, if you want pure indulgence, book a few therapists to visit your home and carry out the treatments of your choice. Light those candles, press play on your favourite playlist and put your feet up... it’s chillax time!

Karaoke Night After a couple of glasses of bubblies, everything sounds better, even the sound of your own voice. Nothing beats an impromptu night of karaoke to get you into the singsong mood. Maybe even do it in teams of two for a friendly battle of the tunes and have the winners crowned the nightingales. Plenty of hotspots in town offer up private rooms or even open crowd karaoke where any anti-valentine’s song will surely hgo down a treat. Belt them out, ladies... sing (and dance) like no one’s watching!

Batch maker, batch maker, make me a batch... of course, we’re talking about baking anti-v-day biscuits and cupcakes. The smell of freshly baked goodies is enough to make everyone dizzy with decadence - the diet is definitely going out of the window. Make it a fun evening by getting customised aprons for all your girlfriends. You can even swap your favourite cookie recipes and get creative with icing and fondant. It’s time to put on the chef ’s hats and get baking, accompanied with a cup of hot chocolate. Time to eat ALL the feelings!

BOISTEROUS FUN, PLENTY OF BANTER, GOOD FOOD AND A FREE FLOW OF TIPPLE... THAT’S YOUR BOYS’ NIGHT IN SORTED. FUSS FREE AND SIMPLE - THE LADS REALLY ARE QUITE EASY TO PLEASE!

Games Night Every boy is a geek to an extent any time a game night is on the cards. A bit of competitiveness is not just healthy, but also gives you an adrenalin rush. Whether it’s FIFA, Call of Duty or something a little more specific like The Legend of Zelda, a games night is all the lads need for a good time. Make it more interesting and go head to head with other gamers online. If all else fails, take it back to basics with a dose of monopoly or charades. So, get the boys to come around, plug in your games, pop the bottles, order the pizza and ready, set, go... may the best team win!

Series Marathon Sports Evening Whether you’re a football fan, a basketball supporter or a cricket follower – when it comes to sports, boys are down for a comfy sit down on the couch and glued to the screen. Check out the food delivery apps on match days as many have offers from restaurants with special deals to accompany your game time. Order in, keep the ice box handy, recline that lazy chair and let the perfect testosteroneinfused evening begin. Why not exchange your team shirts just for fun (or is that actually sacrilegious?). The only activity this evening will be couch potato calisthenics!

Feel like a gangster for a night, with a marathon of the best mafia series, be it The Sopranos or The Godfather trilogy – you can’t go wrong. Enact the bad boy side of you with your very own gang of friends. Turn it into a theme night by asking your mates to dress up like their favourite mafia lord for added effect. Make sure you mean serious business... this will separate the men from the boys!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Following the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn splits with the Joker and joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya. When a narcissistic crime lord known as Black Mask places a target on a young girl named Cassandra Cain, Harley and the superheroes protect the girl and defeat Sionis.

DIRECTOR: Cathy Yan CAST: Margot Robbie, Bryan Unkeless

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Giving the amazing Harley Quinn the spotlight she deserves, Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn offers a quirky twist to the conventional superhero storyline. The eighth film in the DC Extended Universe and a follow-up spin-off to 2016’s Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey features Harley Quinn and her own team of female superheroes. Bringing Harley’s spunky energy front and centre, the world of Birds of Prey is very different to its predecessors in terms of the aesthetic and tone - but just as fascinating. Set after the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn has split from the Joker and Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City vulnerable. As Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley teams up with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help save her from the evil crime lord. What follows is Harley’s journey to start a whole new life as she overcomes her breakup with the Joker and leads an all-girl gang to take on a dangerous mob boss. The Authenticity Project By Clare Pooley

ALT/INDIE

Manic

By Halsey

With the release of her highly anticipated third album, Manic, Halsey is gearing up for a whole new era of music. Blessing us with the unexpected, the singer’s latest offering has us jumping in our seats with excitement. Moving away from the dystopian fantasy world genre, the album is more about Halsey’s current worldview. Sampling a mix of everything from hiphop and rock to country, the record gives her a chance to express herself like never before. A gorgeous pop and electropop composition, “Graveyard” is all about loving someone who is in a bad place and unknowingly following them into this bad place. A relatable and pleasing track, it has all the makings of a quintessential Halsey song. On the other hand, “Without Me”, a mid-tempo pop and R&B track interpolates Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River”. Bringing the singer’s raw and honest side to the fore, her raspy vocals and unfiltered lyrics embolden the track and hold nothing back. Making us fall in love with her all over again, Halsey offers a soundtrack in which no song is similar to the other. Displaying a sense of duality, vulnerable lyrics and intoxicating vocals, Manic is all set to become another notch on Halsey’s musical belt.

Rare

By Selena Gomez

Making a comeback into the limelight with her newly enlightened self, Rare sees Selena Gomez returning to the musical scene at her assertive best. One of the best pop albums in recent times, Rare is a compilation of everything that the singer has overcome and experienced in her time away from the spotlight. A celestial ballad chronicling her journey to wellness and the drama surrounding her life, “Lose You to Love Me” is hands down one of the best songs on the album. The stripped back emotional track sees the singer laying her heart bare, surrounded with somber yet enthralling piano chords. Celebrating her newfound peace and clarity, the album sees Selena taking chances and getting out of her comfort zone. A fresh and upbeat danceable track, “Look at Her Now” is all about bouncing back from heartbreak. The empowering techno vibes are all we need to start this New Year off right! Offering a consistently unified sound across the tracks, Rare suggests tanatlising new directions for the singer.

When Julian Jessop, an eccentric, lonely artist leaves a green journal about his life in a local café, it brings together six strangers and leads to unexpected friendship, and even love. The novel’s quirky set of characters including a fabulous mommy Instagrammer and a charming addict make for a heartbreakingly sad and painfully true narrative. A story about being brave and putting your most authentic self forward is an uplifting novel.

BEAUTY IN DIVERSITY

Dubai-based Kristel Bechara is an award-winning contemporary artist from Lebanon, whose artwork illustrates the revolutionary creation of photographic imagery with oil, acrylic and giclée printmaking mediums to depict emotion. Having showcased her work in galleries worldwide; from Tokyo to Milan, Brussels and France, it was here at World Art Dubai 2018 that the mother-of-two received the UAE Resident Artist Award for her Beauty in Diversity collection. ARTS Q&A •

Hi Kristel! Tell us more about your journey into art - how did you get started and what inspires your work? I am influenced by my late father, who was a surrealist artist and sculptor. I must have gotten his gift and I have been encouraged to express myself and create art ever since I was a child. My transition from art hobbyist into a professional artist started about 12 years ago when I moved to Dubai and started experimenting with a new style that combines my fondness of artistic styles into one medium; combining my love of fabrics, graphic patterns and painting into a single dynamic and colourful artwork that expresses beauty in diversity of various topics. Your work is stunning. There is a sense of spirited freedom and vibrant use of colours. What is it about creating this unique form of art that grips you? Thank you! I generally select topics that move me and have an impact on my emotions during a period of time but generally both extremes of the happiness and sadness spectrum have the most lasting impact on me and on my art.

Describe your artistic style for someone who is viewing your work for the first time… I always wanted to have a signature style through which I could express myself. So, the whole idea was to have silhouettes in blacks, whites and greys with colour thrown in. It’s just my perspective on things. Is there a message that you’re trying to convey through your art? “Beauty in Diversity” is the statement that defines my art. Our world is beautiful because it is diverse and full of contrast. I try my hardest to highlight this aspect through my artwork and show that our differences are what makes us unique and divine; we should embrace theses diversities and develop and open our minds to tolerance and inclusion. What do you think about the art scene in the UAE - are there any challenges faced by contemporary artists and is there room for improvement? • ARTS Q&A significant growth year on year. People in Dubai specifically are culturally diverse and they love art. Because of the incredible economic opportunity that the city presents to majority of its residents, a lot of them can afford to collect art. Dubai represents an opportunity for uprising artists to interact with collectors and potentially serve as a launching pad into a successful career. The most challenging part is not UAE specific but rather a universal profession issue – developing your own style that is instantly attributed to the artist takes a lot of time and requires significant sacrifices without guaranteed successful outcome – artists need to transition from an amateur artist to a full-time professional artist by leaving behind an careers and taking a gamble that their art is going to be popular and commercially viable. Your artwork can be deemed revolutionary for its methods. Tell us about some of the materials, tools and techniques that you use and why these in particular…. I endeavor to make my art evoke a sense of joy and intense emotions. My methods involve characteristic stencil-like drawings and sketching combined with modern mixed media lines to form multi layered paintings. My art style is best identified by its dynamic patterns and expressive colours using oil, acrylic and giclée printmaking mediums to depict emotion. • ARTS Q&A that evoke some feelings and emotions. Every painting starts with an idea /statement / object that becomes at that moment in time important for me to express in an artwork. I then endlessly sketch and doodle until my emotions and thoughts about that particular topic crystallise in my mind and I finally figure out the best way to represent / express it on canvas. The final and longest step in the process is the selection and application of the color palette. Often, I work on more than one artwork at a time, each will be at a different stage of the process. How has social media affected you as an artist - has the impact been positive or otherwise? I first published my work through social media and received an order within the hour. Social media presence is assuring that there is greater attention to the work. I think it’s important in terms of reaching out to other artists and collectors. I, for one, have not done any advertising for my works but just put up images with hashtags and that has attracted a lot of followers, collectors and gallerists. Who are some of your biggest artistic influences and why? My absolute influence is Henri Matisse - the greatest color maestro to have ever lived - he is such an inspiration across culture that I sometimes feel he is not given enough credit. His color palettes are the baseline of what we now consider as beauty norms across many industries (from fashion to architecture). Some of my favourite artists are Andy Warhol, Miriam Shapiro and Frida Kahlo. What is your advice for young budding artists? Believe in yourself, try to develop your own style that you are passionate about and always create to satisfy yourself first. Then work really hard and be relentless - hard work always pays. What’s coming up for you in 2020? I am working on a solo exhibition in Dubai at DIFC with a major gallery that already represented me during Dubai Art Week for my original acrylic on canvas paintings – I am very excited about this event and will post details soon on my social media channels. I have also booked my space at World Art Dubai 2020 where I will showcase a new series that I am currently working on for my Beauty in Diversity collection. Last year was a very positive and busy year for me. I participated in several exhibition events and projects and no doubt I will be taking part in many more in 2020. ✤

he interior of The Westin City Centre Bahrain is sumptuous and modern with lavish crushed velvet fabrics adorning cushions and an array of carefully crafted furniture. Throughout the hotel different levels and styles of illumination create an air of extravagance in the entertaining spaces and tranquillity and intimacy in the lounge areas. The décor is a clever blend of polished woods, tiles, panelling and ornate chandeliers. The cutting-edge contemporary design is executed perfectly to create a sense of luxuriant escapism. This sense of splendour struck us immediately as our car was whisked away by valet. We entered and were offered a refreshingly fruity trio of welcome drinks which resembled a heavenly elixir to kick start our staycation experience. The hotel takes a holistic, bespoke approach towards guests’ wellbeing which was evident as we checked in smoothly and sashayed to our Executive Room. The platter of treats presented to us reflected the attention to detail and personal knowledge of every guest. Chocolates of all kinds satisfy our sweet tooth! The in-room amenities ensure that no two stays are alike but are customised to indulge the cravings, style and eccentricities of guests from arrival to departure. Generously designed, the room features modern furnishings, rich textures and subtle hues and is available with twin or king size beds. Promising a high degree of subtle sophistication, the rooms here are a perfect retreat for the business or leisure traveller. Warm colour schemes and understated decorative accents help soothe mind, body and soul. The highlight of any visit to The Westin is the Heavenly Bed which has a reputation that truly proceeds it. Aside from this, the ambient lighting, crisp tiled edges in the heavenly bathroom and thoughtfully selected accessories from the signature White Tea range are designed to create a sense of mindfulness and bodhi whilst ensuring that all necessary links with the outside world are at hand should you require them. The team at The Westin make a conscious effort to create a home away from home. Our reluctance to leave such a haven drew us to ordering room service for dinner – and what a meal it was. The Beef Bresaola was thin juicy slices of meat, topped with fresh salad faves like tomato, lettuce and arugula. Delicious! The Tom Yum soup was one of the best we’ve tasted in a long time, with no skimping on the prawns. Whilst the seafood mixed grill was a smoky, tender affair that we couldn’t get enough of. All of the menus at The Westin are filled with superfoods which creates vitality and wellbeing through their philosophy of food synergy – pairing certain foods to increase their health-giving benefits. The hotel services and ethos also extend to business clientele through the state-of-the-art meeting and function rooms. Whether it be a board

Once inside the soothing aromas and soft lighting immediately had a calming effect as we changed into warm fluffy robes and arranged ourselves on loungers in the relaxation zone. The treatment began with a cleansing detox water. The facial involved cleansing and exfoliating treatments preceding the signature massage. The masseuse expertly sought out every knotted fibre and stress point with no direction from us. Her techniques had the effect of a car journey on a small baby, lulling us into a meditative sleep. The overall two-hour experience passed by too quickly! As we emerged from the dosing state, the excitement continued at the prospect of dining in the renowned Furn Bistro that evening. It is refreshing to have a flagship restaurant within such an auspicious venue serving high end Khaleeji cuisine as opposed to favouring the flavours of other nations. The bakery churns out expertly crafted Sambusak and Manakish whilst also paying homage to pastry staples such as croissants and strudel. Wishing to stretch our culinary boundaries, we decided to try the salmon recommended by my knowledgeable and welcoming 56

As technology speeds up the pace of life and each of us has unique stresses and strains dictated by individual circumstances, we all search for a means of escaping and space to ‘re-boot’. DARE TO LEAP In a time where the mobile phone market has become saturated with the latest tech and features, Realme is bringing more innovation and stylish design to the Middle East market. Created to deliver outstanding performance in a sleek package, Realme is stepping up its game with its latest offering – the 5 Pro – and FACT took a closer look.

M

aking a giant gadget leap in performance, Realme’s penchant for quality on a budget has made the 5 Pro the default choice in the value segment for smartphones. It’s easy to see that Realme is perfectly targeted towards the trendsetters of now – young people with an interest in breaking boundaries and those who want to enjoy the happy life brought by the beauty of technology – at an affordable price. Insisting in the philosophy of real design, Realme doesn’t compromise on aesthetic taste. With a motto of “Dare To Leap” – the Realme 5 Pro boasts a whole lot of firsts for the brand, the Full Speed Flagship phone comes equipped with a big 6.3-inch LCD screen on the front, claiming a 90.6 screen-to-body ratio. The pre-applied screen guard is also great for protection. Though the phone appears glossy – it is not slippery. We have a good grip on the phone and scrolling is as faster and smoother than ever, letting us enjoy a higher refresh rate. Even the 8.9mm thickness doesn’t pose any issues. One of the phone’s biggest unique selling points is its four rear cameras. When using the phone outdoors and at night, you’ll see that the screen can get quite bright. Photos are sharp and vibrant – especially as you get separate controls for HDR, Filters, and Chroma Boost, whilst video content is also decent and “social media worthy”. The Realme 5 Pro’s support of Widevine L1 DRM for high-res video streaming is another bonus for those who spend a lot of time watching content on their phone. The 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor has an f/1.79 aperture and

supports PDAF, which is usually found in more expensive phones. This is next to an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/2.25 aperture, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has a 16-megapixel sensor and f/2 aperture. It might take a few attempts to master the perfect selfie but once you’ve got the hang of it – prepare for Insta-ready pics, every single day. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the rear, rather than embedded into the screen like other smartphones. Fingerprints and face recognition can be used to unlock not only the phone but also individual apps and a Private Safe which lets you store documents and photos away from prying eyes. For a phone in this price range, that’s a pretty nifty feature that we appreciate. Battery life is more than good for a phone in this segment. You’ll likely get a full day on single charge whilst using it for daily tasks like whatsapp messages, insta stories, internet browsing, and video streaming. Charging time is also reasonable, with the phone managing to reach up to 80 per cent in just over half an hour. For general day-to-day usage and multitasking between apps, the Realme 5 Pro is a true ally for users. For a low-cost device it looks and feels incredibly premium. The geometric pattern and metallic sheen achieve a lovely smooth finish. Crystal Green and Sparkling Blue add a distinct jewel-toned appearance that wouldn’t look out of place in any millennial’s hand. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.REALME.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION. fact magazine

O

ver the years, Porsche have managed to set themselves apart from most other car manufacturers. They have done this through their unwavering dedication to style, luxury, class and above all through superior technology and performance. This iconic brand has gained an ever increasing international following and respect since its founding in 1931 as they constantly produce offerings that are not only functionally superior to other car manufacturers, but are also beautiful to look at from every angle. With ever more impressive models being produced, Porsche have firmly established themselves in the very upper echelons of the luxury SUV segment. At FACT, we’re all about getting behind the wheel and putting the car through its paces. Recently, we had the privilege of experiencing this heritage automobile excellence first-hand, when we were invited by the team at Porsche Centre Bahrain to test drive the new Porsche Cayenne Coupé. You may think that the Cayenne Range has only a certain amount of room for improvement after which only the bells and whistles can be upgraded. This is not the truth as was proven to us by this new model SUV. We immediately noticed the dynamic fresh design of this third-generation model, complete with its sharper lines and unique rear section. The elegant roofline of this athletic looking vehicle has a sharper slope to it that falls away to the rear making it the sportiest-looking model in the segment. The roof spoiler accentuates this effect and is combined with a new adaptive rear spoiler that form part of the label’s new Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA). This spoiler extends by 135 mm from speeds of 90 km/h upwards, increasing the contact pressure of the rear axle, whilst the PAA simultaneously improves efficiency. The A-pillar and front windscreen are now flatter than previous Cayenne models, with the roof edge having been lowered by around twenty millimetres. The rear doors and fenders have also been redesigned, adding to this SUV’s powerful and sophisticated presence. An impressive 2.16 m2 fixed glass roof is fitted as standard, although a contoured carbon roof is also available upon request. Once inside the luxurious cabin area, we instantly noticed the abundance of space on offer. This freedom of movement combined with the new eight-way sports seats complete with integrated headrests, ensure unparalleled levels of comfort, support and functionality. All of the materials, trimmings, fabrics and finishes found inside are of premium quality and the overall design is simply exceptional. This new Coupé features a rear bench that has the characteristics of two individual seats that are fitted as standard, although the familiar comfort rear seats can be fitted as an alternative at no extra cost. The spaciousness of the cabin is echoed in the rear with ample leg, shoulder and head room providing an exceptionally comfortable space for passengers. The 625-litre boot capacity ensures this car is capable of transporting a generous amount of luggage, giving it an element of practicality. This can be increased to 1,540 litres when the back seats are folded flat. More than impressed with both the interior and exterior of the vehicle, it was time to experience it’s on road capabilities. As soon as foot was applied to pedal, we could not help but smile at you another as we felt our bodies being pressed back into our

seats. The Cayenne’s turbocharged V6 engine roared smoothly as we effortlessly surged forward along the tarmac. With a threelitre displacement delivering 340 hp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm, this sporty SUV has more power on offer than should ever be required. With the Sport Chrono Package fitted in series production vehicles, this mid-sized luxury SUV races from 0 – 100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds and boasts a top speed of 243 km/h. With the PAA assuring we stayed glued to the ground as we powered around corners and sped along the straights, we found the handling of the vehicle to be superb and always felt in complete control of the experience. This feeling of security was hugely enhanced by an extremely efficient braking system as well as the presence of a multitude of standard safety features. The term “time flies when you’re having fun” certainly applied here and all too soon we found this lavish experience nearing an end as we made our way back to Porsche Centre Bahrain. Our conclusion: If you are looking for an SUV that delivers in all areas of functionality, performance, design and class, the exuberant new Porsche Cayenne Coupé is the answer to all your motoring woes. ✤

or the first time in more than a century, thedistinctive features of the genuine “Alfa spirit” have now come together in a sport utility vehicle. Its name is the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and it aims to rewrite the rules in the medium-sized premium SUV segment.

Exciting handling The name itself tells us that this model will provide a thrilling driving experience and still excel in the comfort and versatility

typical of its category. The Stelvio is Italy's highest mountain pass and Highway 38, which crosses it, over 20 kilometres in length and with more than 75 hairpin bends, has iconic status. To enjoy it as it is meant to be enjoyed, alone or in the company of friends and family, there is now a SUV capable of offering an unrivalled combination of driving pleasure, Italian styling and versatility: the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. In true Alfa Romeo tradition, the new SUV delivers impeccable handling, worthy of a real sports car, proven by balanced weight distribution, the most direct steering ratio in the segment and state-of-the-art suspension with the exclusive AlfalinkTM technology. Not to mention the lavish use of ultra-lightweight, hi-tech materials including carbon fibre for the drive shaft and aluminium for the engines, suspension systems, hood, wings, doors and the tailgate. What's more, for the ultimate in road-holding, the Stelvio SUV offers the Alfa Romeo Q4 all-wheel drive system, and can be equipped with mechanical self-locking rear differential on request. More than just performance and handling, the car has plenty of room available for passengers to enjoy and share the pleasure of travelling regardless of the destination. 100% Alfa Romeo sporty design The Stelvio's proportions, with a length of 468 cm, height of 167 cm and width of 216 cm, express strength, dynamism and compactness. Externally, its attractive line is the perfect blend of tradition, design and performance, an integral part of the brand's history, dating back over a century. Achieving this mix, now as in the past, involves combining the three ingredients of Alfa Romeo design: proportion, simplicity and top-quality surfacing. These same ingredients gave us the Giulia - the new Alfa Romeo benchmark and precursor of the brand's future - and have been comprehensively reworked to adapt them to the altogether

The Stelvio SUV is tailored in all respects to embody Italian good companionship, comfort and taste. ✤

Innovative engineering for unbeatable safety Alfa Romeo Stelvio features a large number of sophisticated safety systems, available as standard or optionals depending on the version. Key amongst them is the Integrated Brake System (IBS), the innovative electromechanical system that combines stability control with a traditional servo brake to deliver instantaneous brake response and hence recordbreaking stopping distances. Not to mention Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Brake with pedestrian detection, which give the driver an audible alert of a potential front collision and then activates the braking system, and Lane Departure Warning, which warns the driver if he strays across the boundaries of his lane. Also included is Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Rear Cross-Path Detection, for continual monitoring of rear blind spots on both sides of the vehicle, alerting the driver in the event of potential hazards. REAL TALK: LES BENJAMINS SS20 Taking inspiration from feminine sophistication and urban staples, Les Benjamins is unveiling a new collection for the Spring/Summer 2020 season, one that is thoroughly rooted in the brand’s commitment to design real garments made for real people.

• FASHION FOCUS

This season, Les Benjamins explore new interpretations of ease and luxury through a cycling-wear influenced ready-to-wear collection. Inspired by The 4 Rivers Path, Korea’s most popular cross country bicycle trail from Seoul to Busan, the new collection offers a curated selection of easy-to- wear silhouettes complemented with timeless evening-wear pieces. In this context, the freedom of movement, and the abolishment of any physical restraints are primordial. The Spring/Summer 2020 collection, therefore, introduces dynamic styles that are emphasized by color-blocking styles and graphic mixed media prints. Silhouettes emphasise the theme and balance the contemporary spirit of Les Benjamins – one of arts, craftsmanship, and street-culture – rendering it as relevant as ever. The distinctive outfits incorporate casual and engineered looks directly drawn from cycling-wear. Each piece is thereby cut in a range of premium and hi-tech fabrics and enriched with a multitude of cycling details such as utilitarian pockets and protective coatings. Minimalist, active tailoring blends cycling elements into the brand’s archetypal urban styles. Fits suggest ease, first and foremost: cropped cycling tops and jackets, as well as form-fitting cycling shorts and high-waisted flared track-pants ensure absolute comfort and style. This season’s leading print, the Carpet Design jacquard, for its part, embellishes the surface of a variety of key pieces, such as maxi dresses, cropped jackets and asymmetric skirts. In addition, sequined racing tops and asymmetric styles add a sophisticated edge to the collection. The palette, for its part, is both tropical and urban: colorways of sundowner pink, sky blue, and fresh mint are celebrating the feeling of summer and put in stark contrast to urban shades, such as light grey, off-white and black. 76

JOYOUS JAPANESE DINING If you’re a Japanese food buff in Bahrain, then you probably already know about the awardwinning Sato at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa. s we walked into Sato, a kimonoclad waitress welcomed us with a nice bang on the giant gong at the entrance, a sound that signified what was about to come. And what was about to come was nothing less than the magic of *drumrolls* Chef Kevin de Guzman — the man responsible for the onslaught of wow-moments we were about to pursue. Seated and all excited, we felt the japanese vibes so much! (Is there a seatbelt somewhere?!) Soft classical music filled the room, which is designed to depict a Japanese home, with sunken tables and traditional tatami flooring. This peaceful zen-like surrounding is not just a restaurant, but an experience. Something that follows through to the excellent menu. We started with the Uzusukuri — thinly sliced seasonal white fish sashimi served with ponzu sauce. Super fresh, perfectly cut pieces - that I notso discreetly hoarded – but quickly forgave myself for they were just THAT good. I was still busy with devouring the delicious Uzusukuri, when suddenly, just like that, it was coming to our table, with only one mission: to blow us away. And it did. The most colourful sashimi bowl we have ever seen — Sato’s Sashimi Funamori. The bowl was full of various pieces of delicious seafood. Judging by how the fish was carefully chopped, I realised the cooks devoted all their passion and skills into creating this awesome dish. This sashimi was undoubtedly a masterpiece, but it was actually the Otoro and Churoto Sushi that suggested just how serious Sato really is about authentic Japanese food. As the most desirable part of the inside of the tuna’s belly, Otoro is such a limited – and most expensive – part of the fish. And guess what? Sato is the only Japanese restaurant on the island that serves it. We could immediately taste why this dish was so prestigious. With its sweet taste, it literally melts in our mouths and we finish it up with gusto. So much taste, so many emotions, but the party had to go on. The Mahotsukai Maki was our next dish. It was rich, creamy and absolutely perfect. Easily some of the best maki we’ve tasted in Bahrain. After also enjoying the must-order dish of sea bass with truffle egg, we reached a point where eating more started to become a challenge. But we couldn’t leave without trying the Chef’s divine Beef Taremoto. The meat was truly tender, the taste was just pristine, and we were undoubtedly exceeding our limits. But, this culinary journey wasn’t over just yet. Chef Kevin was preparing something unique for our dessert course – surely a concoction that would send us deep into a food coma – but we were all 84

in! The dessert was, again, an experience. What we were pleased with was the Japanese water cake, also called the raindrop cake. A cake purely made of water, topped with dark sugar syrup and roasted soy bean flour. Not too sweet, rather light and refreshing, it was completely unique and surprising. The perfect end to a great meal! What strikes us immediately about Sato is their strong service game. The staff is very attentive and friendly yet they give you plenty of space to enjoy your time there with no intrusion. All in all, the diverse à la carte menu, the sushi bar, the bentos, and the teppanyaki rooms, where live cooking and entertainment is provided by the talented chefs – these are all individual ingredients to the big recipe that is Sato. It’s no wonder that the restaurant has been around for so long, helping new diners create memories and reminding loyal patrons of why they should keep coming back for more. An absolute must visit, Sato is a place you’ll fall in love with from the moment you enter until the moment you leave.✤

urn Bistro & Bakery is the flagship restaurant within the sumptuous and stylish The Westin City Centre Bahrain. Chef Raafat Nemeh has devised a menu which showcases high end Khaleeji cuisine. Dishes such as Saloona and Ghoozi are served with a cutting-edge slant. The bakery churns our expertly crafted Sambusek and Manakish in abundance, whilst also paying homage to pastry staples such as croissants and strudel. Naturally we were eagerly anticipating what delights the Saturday Brunch would have in store for us. The décor perfectly suits the ethos and vision at Furn which is modern, understated sophistication but with a classic undertone. The simple hues of cream and blue upholstery blended with light wooden finishes reflect the tones of the scenery around the hotel, just as the menu reflects the cultural heritage of the region both past and present. As we began to explore the variety of stations the thing which immediately struck us was the staggering value that this brunch offers, especially at the astounding rate of BD 8 net per person for the variety of dishes offered. Perhaps one of the most unique things about brunch is that it is so easy to eat healthily without trying to. The salad station was vibrant and inviting. A rainbow of enticing options including beetroot, crisp fresh leaves in an array of colours, pulses and beans enhancing the most simply dressed traditional Arabic, Mediterranean and Asian salads. They are an excellent accompaniment to the hot and cold starters and main courses. The presentation is thoughtful and adds an additional element to the experience. As we were reaching to reveal each dish it was with a sense of anticipation of the feast for all the senses that each one offered. Beautiful biryanis which were bejewelled with vibrant spices, nuts and pomegranate pearls, tantalising tagines with liberal helpings of plump fruit and luxuriant sauces and the piece de resistance, the shawarma station with its tower of tender, delicately spiced and seared meat. The fact that complex Indian curries and Arabic staples become somewhat of an afterthought tells you just how high the quality and quantity is. Furn doesn’t neglect those with more traditional tastes or those wanting to explore European and Asian cuisine. Samosas, pillowy, herb covered focaccia and pizzas offered an equally tasty alternative to the traditional dishes. As Furn is also a renowned bakery you may wish to pay a visit simply for the selection of breads, bakes and pastries. Every manner of boule, bun, roll, flatbread and pita awaits you, still warm as they are fresh from the oven. The flaky croissant and pastry selection are a reminder that the chefs here are real craftsmen.

BRUNCH FOCUS •

Dessert here at Furn is the most fantastic finale to this exploration of taste and flavour. We stood looking in awe at the cheese cabinet which would not be out of place in one of the chic delicatessens on the Champs Elysee. This could very easily have provided a meal in its own right and expanded our knowledge of the plethora of fromage to formaggio. Sweet toothed diners are not neglected either. Velvety chocolate tartes, delicate madeleines and glazed tortes will ensure you over indulge before departing. An array of delicious morsels skewered and waiting to be submerged in the chocolate fondue were a real highlight of the experience but in reality, this was one of very many!

Furn Saturday Brunch is served from 12.30pm to 4pm and it is not just the great value that will have us coming back for more, but also the phenomenal quality and the superb level of service. The experience was not that of a typical lunch but more a superb restaurant showcasing its stand out dishes and homages to classic favourites. ✤

ocated on the beautiful shores of the Investment Gateway Island in Hidd, Phoenix invites you to a truly unique venue, as the restaurant serves you all the things you love in one place; splendid views of the sea — a sight that comes with scrumptious food, excellent puffs of hookah, amazing cocktails, and an atmosphere made for enjoyment. Walking into Phoenix, you will immediately catch lovely arabesque feels in a beautiful contemporary setting punctuated with traditional elements. An environment that invites you for complete relaxation, whether after a long day of work or for a cosy weekend hangout. Taking a seat and relishing the marriage of really good shisha with the mesmerising sea view is definitely the right thing to do at Phoenix. But it would be wrong to not try the food at this place as well. For Phoenix’s excellent service continues into the delicious food. Our first dish of Punjabi Kibbeh is a vibrant fusion of the Middle East and North India with the perfect blend of tandoori chicken, spices and bulgur. The slightly sweeter combination of nuts and spices for this hybrid is super out of the ordinary – in a very good way. The Kibbeh Fromage follows suit, which comes as a cheesy version. Our next dish of Quinoa Salad is a treat for all salad lovers. A heavenly mix of fresh and creamy avocado, pink grapefruit, juicy prawns, cherry tomato mesclun greens, and perfectly cooked quinoa mingled with a pomegranate dressing — have you ever had such a fusion of flavours? We think not. And because a key maxim for the cuisine is always: “you eat with your eyes”, Phoenix serves this refreshing mix of salad just as pretty as it tastes. Our following dish is the pan-fried Salmon Fillet and the salmon is done just right, with a delicious caperberry sauce, fresh dill, creamy yet fluffy mashed potatoes (it’s like a true art form) and grilled courgetti and aubergine. We love this masterpiece more and more with every bite – and you will too. We also highly recommend the baked Lamb Loin, truly a divine combination of lamb and vegetable elements. It must be the rich lamb, softened over the heat, that makes it taste SO incredible. Whether you’re a lamb lover, not so keen or somewhere in between, it’s worth trying this dish (we promise). If you still have room for dessert, then don’t miss out on Phoenix’s Kunafa with ice cream. The traditional treat comes with filo that is not chewy but absolutely light and crispy, the cheese is literally melt-in-yourmouth soft. Offering guests a truly multi-sensorial experience, we are genuinely impressed by Phoenix — from the mesmerising sea views to the superb service, and not to forget the numerous big outdoor screens, that ensure a fun evening for sports lovers. What is Dry Needling?

Being a Good Client

Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner. She aims to provide evidence-based management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

Dry needling is a unique procedure intended to specifically target and restore muscle function, with an emphasis on improving tissue healing and restoring normal tissue function. In addition, it eases the trigger points and helps improve flexibility and increase range of motion. Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture, while there are similarities, the two pain relief techniques are very different. Acupuncture is designed to relieve pain, discomfort, or issues by opening up a person’s energy flow or chi. Dry needling is designed to stimulate trigger points, or muscles that are irritable. What type of pain does dry needling treat? Dry needling can treat trigger points that lead to these issues: Lower back pain, Sciatica, Headaches and migraines, Strains in your groin, hamstring or muscles, Pain in your shoulders, neck, knees and hips, Carpal tunnel, Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, and Golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow and other overuse injuries. What should you expect after dry needling therapy? Soreness is common after a dry needling session. It’s similar to how you feel sore after strength training. Most often, the soreness resolves within 24 hours. You can help reduce it with ice, heat and gentle stretching. Dry needling treatments may be used as a stand-alone therapy or in addition to a variety of other treatments to relieve your pain and improve your function. ✤

Most Personal Trainers will have horror stories when it comes to clients; I too over the years have had my fair share of nightmare clients. If you want to get the results you desire from your sessions with a Personal Trainer, then you need to be a good client. Most Personal Trainers have studied and have qualifications and they continue to educate themselves. There is a reason why I said “most” as you also have what I call “YouTube trainers” who get their education from watching videos and they have no idea whether the information in these videos is correct or not. So, I will be talking about the former - educated trainers. These PTs have taken time to put together training programmes for their clients and actually care if their clients achieve the result’s they want but it also matters that the client plays a part in their own success. As a client, it is your responsibility to follow the meal plan your trainer has spent time putting together for you; to do the workouts your trainer has put together for you on the days you don’t see them; to show up for your sessions as continuously cancelling sessions will have a big impact on your results, consistency is key. It is also your responsibility to show up on time for your session as repeated tardiness is disrespectful and a sign you don’t value your time or your trainer’s time. On that note, let’s get out there and smash those 2020 goals.✤

Bahrain National Theatre and National Museum – combination of modern art and tradition in the centre of Corniche. It’s amazing how you can have breakfast in the Museum, Riffa Fort and Bahrain Fort, house of former ruler Isa Ibn Ali Al Khalifa, Old Muharraq Souq, Bab Al Bahrain and World Trade Centre. As a student of history, I truly believe Bahrain is unique, bridging the gap by remaining connected to their past, but keeping up with modern times.
