Letting Go.....

by Debra Landini R.N.

I refer to it, as “letting out the umbilical cord”. As our babies grow, we have to let the “psychological umbilical cord” out. When we have our babies, they're so tiny, gorgeous and helpless. And for most parents, looking after their small babies and children is very satisfying and brings great pleasure.

heartstrings when our children leave stages behind but it's how it's meant to be. I watched my threeyear-old granddaughter (me with a sad smile) as she gave her long forgotten “blanky” to her baby doll to comfort it. I remember when my granddaughter was a baby and that “blanky” comforted her.

But, and it's a big BUT, our children are meant to grow up. We're meant to work our way out of a job. Our children will grow older and they need to grow more independent. We shouldn't hold them back. We need to let go or risk stifling our children and making ourselves slaves.

But it isn't all bad. Just as the seasons change and bring new experiences of enjoyment, our children's new stages also bring new experiences of enjoyment. There are literally hundreds of thousands of these experiences as children grow to adulthood.

I think of the mother that I recently worked with. She kept saying “I don't want to push them too hard. They're only little; they're my little ones”. With young children it isn't a case of pushing them too hard. They will want to develop. They will want to achieve. They will want to grow. You won't need to push them at all. Just encourage them to try to learn new things and praise them when they do. I have written before that I don't think we should push our children too hard to grow up, but it is equally unwise to hold them back. It may well be the most difficult thing a parent has to do - let their child grow up. It does pull at the

As a grandparent, I have the delight of a loving relationship with my adult child which only happened because she was allowed to develop and grow into that adult. This relationship with my daughter has opened the door to a loving relationship with my grandchildren, I'm pleased to say. Working with a young couple expecting their first baby, I asked “do you want your child to grow into a mature adult?” And they said, “oh yes”. Keep your mind on the future as you raise your children in the present. Mature, happy, and independent adults should be your goal.

Dealing with Regular nibbling of food can keep the nausea under control, if not completely get rid of it. I found I could take 10 minutes to eat one dry biscuit and that would keep me feeling well enough to keep working. Even sucking on barley sugar may help. If the nausea is taking away your appetite, nibbling during the day can also be important for your nutrition as well.

Morning sickness. It is certainly the first image of new pregnancy in movies and TV shows, and it is a reality for many pregnant women. Not all women experience morning sickness in early pregnancy, and not women stop feeling it after 13 weeks of pregnancy either. Despite its name, women can feel the nausea in the morning, day, evening, night – or all of these times. Whether you are actually vomiting or just feel like you’re going to much of the time, morning sickness is an unpleasant side effect of pregnancy. Due to the fact that most pregnant women want to avoid drugs and keep their baby healthy, there are limitations to what can be done to cope with morning sickness. The following techniques vary in effectiveness between women, so each woman needs to find what works best for her in each pregnancy. Eating Unlike most cases of nausea, morning sickness tends to be worse on an empty stomach. 18

Breakfast in bed! I’m not talking about a full cooked breakfast, but many women find that having something simple to eat before they get out of bed in the morning means they avoid the nausea for at least a while. A cup of tea or toast and vegemite seem to be the most common choices to control the morning sickness. Vitamin B Vitamin B6 has been associated with reducing pregnancy nausea, and various studies have supported this. The studies indicate that 3 doses of 10 – 25 mg a day work well, and taking it before getting out of bed each morning is particularly useful. If you don’t feel better after a few doses, it could be that vitamin B just doesn’t help you. However, do not take more than 75mg a day as it can damage your nervous system in high quantities. Ginger Ginger has long been known for settling stomach upsets and is perfectly safe for pregnant women, so is well worth trying. It is also easy option as ginger can be taken in many ways – fresh ginger in a stir fry, powdered Follow us on

Morning Sickness Ginger in cakes/biscuits, ginger tea, chunks of preserved ginger, ginger tablets and ginger ale (although you may find it is better flat rather than bubbly)

Alternative therapies A qualified homeopath may be able to recommend some treatments that help combat the nausea. Likewise, you may find relief from an aroma therapist, acupuncturist, reflexoligist or masseur, but make sure these professionals are aware of your pregnancy before treatment commences. Medicinal help There are medicines that can relieve Nausea. However, these should only be taken under medical advice as some are not suitable for pregnant women and can have serious side effects. Whilst not prescription medicines, there are now various lollies, lollipops and lozenges that are specifically designed to combat morning sickness. These can work by providing sugar to your system and giving you

By Tash Hughes vitamin B or ginger. Most women get through pregnancy without any medical assistance for morning sickness. The main exceptions are those women who vomit a lot and find it hard to eat or drink anything as these women face dehydration and may need specialist assistance.

Other tips If you are having trouble with morning sickness, get as much rest as possible as your body is working hard. Even a 15 minute power nap can help you cope better during the day. The following tips may help you cope: Ÿ Plan your day as much as possible around your nausea. For instance, if you are worse in the morning, arrange to start work late Ÿ Allow time so you can avoid express trains so you can get off if need be Ÿ Keep a container in your car for emergencies Carry tissues and wet wipes in your bag Ÿ Carry a bottle of water with you to reduce the nausea and freshen your mouth Ÿ Keep some healthy snacks or hard lollies in your bag. Ÿ Stay away from strong odours, especially raw meat and cigarettes as they often trigger nausea Ÿ Brush your teeth with your finger instead of a brush if regular brushing makes you nauseous and use mouth wash to help clean your mouth Don’t get too warm as this can bring on nausea, open windows, use the microwave and turn on exhaust fans when cooking so these are fewer smells left in the house Always talk to your doctor if you require advice. This article is intended to offer general information about ways to help with morning sickness.

We a re deeply linked both physically and spiritually to the earth energy. Physically we draw all of our nourishment from the earth in the form of nutrient-rich plants and animal, and the earth's minerals, such as salt, iron, magnesium, and calcium play a vital role in our health. . A deeper relationship with the earth can help you feel more alive, more connected to your body, as well as safer and stronger- she is the mother and has some much to give us. So what better way can we get closer to the mother earth than to eat the minerals and root vegetables that are grown under her warm soil. Root vegetables are well known to us all- some varieties more than others- and all add vitamins, minerals and colour to our diets. WHAT ARE ROOT VEGETABLES- Root vegetables grow underground at the base of a plant. Technically they're not all roots; some are bulbous growths that store nutrients to feed the plant in colder months. The bulbs, roots, and tubers absorb water and nutrients to feed the rest of the plant. Those nutrients make them dietary powerhouses for us. Most root vegetables are also starches — a kind of carbohydrate that the body breaks down into glucose for energy.

Are you old enough to know better?

By Knight Perce Hirst

I'm tired of hearing people complain about how old they are. It makes me wonder if wisdom really does come with age. Picasso thought it did. In his later years he wasn't allowed to be alone in an art gallery because he'd been discovered trying to improve one of his masterpieces.

Age used to be important to me. I could hardly wait to be six to go to school, thirteen to be a teenager, eighteen to be legal and twenty-one to be everything else. Now I'm at a point in my life when I think age is just a number and like other numbers, I forget them. I remember my mother referring to the guys I dated as young men. Now I'm referring to men under thirty as young men too. I don't know when my perspective changed. Maybe it was the same time men under thirty started calling me mam. The longer I live, the shorter my memory gets. I go upstairs and forget why I went. Someone's name is on the tip of my tongue and that's where it stays. There are more post-its around the house than there ever were school notices. Thankfully, my husband understands. He puts his arm around me and says those three, little words I need to hear - write it down. The older I get, the more I forget - which could be a symptom of SDS - Seventh Day Syndrome. If God hadn't rested on the seventh day, he could have changed a few things. We could have been born old and got younger every year. Instead of forgetting, we'd know more. In fact, we'd know More than our parents - which is what we thought anyway.

28

The older I get, the faster time seems to pass. When I asked my grandmother if she thought this phenomenon was caused by a chemical change in the brain and if she experienced it too, she said she used to until she stopped wasting time worrying about it. Now I walk errands instead of run them. I don't try to keep up with the Joneses or try to climb the social ladder because I'm rung out. I don't mind standing in line because it gives me time to remember what else I was meant to buy. The only lines I worry about are worry lines; and if I need to lift my spirits, I use my love handles! Snakes Beware! Caroline Zambrano

Protect your pets from deadly bites Snakes aren't just a threat to kids; one strike from these slithering creatures can be deadly to pets, too. It's important for parents to take precautions to prevent encounters with snakes when their kids and pets venture outside. Snakes are inactive during cold weather and come out of hiding during the summer months. They are more active towards late afternoon or early evening, therefore most bites tend to occur around this time. Dog owners need to avoid snake prone areas particularly if they are walking their dog at the end of the day. Very active, curious or working dogs, such as Jack Russells and Border Collies, are more at risk of being attacked by a snake. Snakes tend to be attracted to rodents and rubbish to hide under. They can also easily venture into backyards. Over the spring and summer time, even pets in the city can have encounters with snakes at the local parks, particularly near lakes and beaches. It's advisable for pet owners to use a leash when exercising their dog in bushland or near beach dunes. Snake bites are not only painful but can also kill pets. Therefore, it is important for pet owners to be aware of the signs of a snake bite (and educating their children how to be snake safe), as they may not actually witness their pet being bitten. Snake bites are also harder to spot in dogs with long hair.

Symptoms of snake bite on pets can vary with different snakes, amount of venom injected and the location of the bite. However, one may observe sudden onset of seizures, vomiting, weakness in the limbs and inability to move. Soon after the symptoms occur, the animal may collapse with severely laboured breathing. If you suspect your cat or dog has been bitten by a snake, get your pet to your nearest vet immediately! Rapid treatment with the appropriate anti-venom will better their chance of survival. Do NOT try to catch or kill the snake as all Australian snakes are protected and you may get bitten yourself! The vet will be able to determine if your pet has been bitten or not through various diagnostic tests and also identify the type of snake via a snake bite detection kit. If the vet administers your pet an antivenene for snake bite, it is to neutralise the snake venom in your pet's body, not to protect your pet from another possible snake bite in the future. For more information about protecting your pet from snakes, contact your local vet. Article by Caroline Zambrano of Kellyville Pets NSW www.kellyvillepets.com.au

What to do if On the 22nd of March 2017, the Australian Venom Research Unit published a finding which showed 550 Australians a year are admitted to hospital for a snake bite. Findings from the study showed that between 2000 – 2016, the majority of snake bites occurred:

§ § § §

To males in their 40's. Around the home. After 4pm With people bitten on the hand, finger, foot or ankle.

Risk taking behaviour (picking up or trying to handle a snake) was probably the reason these individuals were bitten. Victims were most likely to collapse or suffer a cardiac arrest with death occurring between 1 hour or up to 19 days later. Many of these men left behind families including little children. It would be awful if these tragic deaths occurred because people tried to take matters into their own hands rather than call a licensed and experienced snake catcher. The simple message to understand is that snakes can kill you, and can do so very quickly if you try to engage them. Do not under any circumstance handle or try to kill any snake. So what is the right thing to do if you see a snake?

32

Follow these 9 simple steps to stay safe: 1. Evacuate the area from all children, animals and people. Make sure people are away from the snake. If no one is near the snake, it cannot bite you. 2. Immediately call your local snake catcher and advise the following: § That you have seen a snake or can see a snake. § Your address § If anyone was bitten. § Follow the snake catcher's instructions. 3. ONLY if safe to do so, keep a watch on the snake from a very safe distance while waiting for the snake catcher to arrive. Keep calm and keep still. If the snake begins to approach you, continue to back away. 4. Try to have someone put the light on and be waiting out front to take the snake catcher to the location of the snake. This is only if there is more than 1 person at home. If there is only one person home, it is more important to watch the snake (from a safe distance) and wait there until the snake catcher arrives. 5. Do NOT stamp on the ground or shout. The snake will not hear you and won't be able to notice the 'vibrations'. It may perceive your behaviour as a threat. 6. Do NOT throw objects at the snake or try to shoot it (yes, people have tried to discharge firearms at snakes on the ground). 7. Do NOT let anyone go near the snake, and especially do not touch or handle it. Follow us on

yourchildincaseyandcardinia

you see a Snake

by Mark (“Snake Hunter”) Pelley

8. Do NOT try to kill the snake. It is illegal in Victoria and such activities carry heavy penalties and could get you killed/severely injured from a bite. 9. Don't assume a snake is gone just because you cannot see it. They hide very well and may be in a place where you cannot see them but the snake can see you. As you can see there is nothing complex about how to manage a snake if it enters your home or back yard. Keeping people and animals away from snakes is imperative to avoid bites. If you follow these simple steps, you can avoid anyone being bitten

and promote the chances of a successful removal from a licensed snake catcher.

Mark “The Snake Hunter” Pelley is a Melbourne based venomous snake catcher. He also works as a snake consultant teaching schools, communities and businesses how to keep safe from venomous snakes. To learn more about snakes, follow The Snake Hunter on Facebook @SnakeHunterAus.

Why can't I budget? Tales of Spreadsheets, Apps and Jars! by Jason Slaviero

My partner and I have been keeping a more precise budget in a spreadsheet of late. I think quietly it brings out the inner geek in her and it has created some lively talking points. We are now discussing our future with a sobriety that can only be obtained when you are financially naked with all to see. More importantly, I think it has been a liberating experience for both of us to know our current reality. So, when I heard a radio announcement from the Family Peace Foundation it got me wondering. The radio announcer was a young girl telling the story of how her Grandparents would have money jars and although they never had much money, they could still afford things by allocating money to different jars, in which each jar represented something they needed. Even though to me this was a contrarian message in these economic times (that's another days' discussion) their point is a powerful one. A penny saved is a penny earned and the foundation would most likely know the root cause of much family anxiety is money.

having to be disciplined. Indeed, much like dieting there are compani es which facilitate it, icons to promote, fades to admire and complex equations which all lead to your 10- step program to overcoming your adversity to look good. Additionally, of these come with the implied requirement to acknowledge our faults to ourselves and to our partners. But does it have to be that way? To me it comes to our relationship with money and that brings me back to the money jars. The money jar's strategy is simple and as a starting point doesn't require you going through much effort or having any pointed discussions about spending habits.

So, do people budget? According to Ubank, 86% of Australian's don't know their monthly expenses. So, it's no wonder that approximately 32% of Australian households are currently experiencing mortgage stress. Which leads me to think that one of the main reasons we don't budget is because we view it like dieting, both conger images of sacrifice and 36

After a while of adding money to the jar it starts to project a sense of abundance, which in turn can lead to more positive changes around behaviours and money. Perhaps, budgeting may become easier. Chickpeas are the Champion Last month I wrote an article espousing the qualities of the humble oat. This month I want to continue the focus on really high fibre, low glycaemic index foods. Over winter this is the type of food that can fill you up and comfort your whole body. This month I want to talk about chickpeas. These nutrition bombs are often overlooked – they're ugly little things, and quite often are mishandled so their full taste potential is not reached. Chickpeas are one of the first vegetables to be cultivated by humans, and when you look at what they provide, it is not surprising. Chickpeas are rich in iron, phosphate, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and vitamin K. They are also a great source of dietary bioactive substances including sterols, tannins, phytic acid and carotenoids. These nutritional properties combined with the low glycaemic index and high fibre content of chickpeas have been shown to have a beneficial role in weight management and glucose and insulin control. There is also evidence that the consumption of chickpeas has a positive effect on some of the markers for cardiovascular disease. But what do we do with chickpeas? I find them to be such a versatile legume. Over winter you can add chickpeas to soups and stews, or you can make a warm roasted vegetable salad with roasted chickpeas tossed through. Or how about trying to make your own falafels or chickpea burger patties? Today I have included a recipe for a roasted sweet potato hommus. This combines the goodness of chickpeas and sweet potato to give you the most sublime dip. There are so many uses for this hommus, including serving it with a good quality grainy cracker, on a 40

by Mandy Parkinson-Bates good slice of toast with sardines, dotted over warm vegetables or as a crust for a lamb rack. SWEET POTATO HOMMUS INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup good quality tahini 4 tbs cold water 2 tablespoons good quality Australian extra virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt 2 medium cloves garlic, peeled and smashed juice of 1 lemon (2-3 tablespoons) 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained ž cup cold roasted sweet potato (roast in 2cm cubes, and push to point of quite dark edges to bring out the lovely caramel flavour) METHOD Add tahini, cold water, olive oil, cumin, salt, garlic and lemon juice to a food processor. Puree until smooth. Add in the chickpeas. Puree for 3-4 minutes, pausing halfway to scrape down the sides of the bowl, until the hummus is smooth. If it seems too thick, add in another tablespoon or two of water. Taste and season with additional salt, cumin, and/or lemon juice if needed. Puree the cold roasted sweet potato and mix well with hommus to combine. Enjoy! Mandy Parkinson-Bates Accredited Practising Dietitian
