The Benefits LEGO — we have all heard about it and possibly played with it. Most of us grew up with it. It is one of the largest brands in the world, is instantly recognisable. Have you ever thought of the educa onal benefits of LEGO? LEGO has been working with educators for over three decades. To develop experiences in the classroom that bring learning concepts to life. The educa onal benefits of playing with the colourful, mul -faceted bricks aren't always clear. There are eight key benefits of crea ng, configuring and cra ing with LEGO. Improves communica on skills LEGO is a great way to relieve stress and engage in meaningful and joyful conversa ons. As children comment on their LEGO crea ons, they develop important communica on skills including the ability to explain ideas, describe their work, talk about the process and verbalise challenges that they had along the way.

LEGO improves self-esteem Connec ng small pieces of LEGO to create a final product that follows a child's vision can be challenging. Achieving this task holds immense sense of sa sfac on that is obvious in a child's smile when they proudly show off their completed work. This has an immensely posi ve effect on a child's self-esteem. LEGO developing lateral thinking and planning skills Following LEGO instruc ons can be challenging. However, it does help children to develop planning skills as well as lateral thinking. When faced with an assembly problem, children have to retrace their steps and analyse their work in order to find parts that need fixing.

The Whi lesea Agricultural Society Inc. has, with much considera on, decided to cancel the 2020 Annual Whi lesea Show. The con nuing restric ons associated with COVID-19, especially the management of social-distancing and the possible risk to public health during large events were the major factors for this decision. The uncertainty of knowing when these restric ons would be li ed has made it very diďŹƒcult to forward plan for our annual show. We take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the show including our many

supporters, volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, local community groups, stall holders, entertainers etc. We know that for some of these groups the Whi lesea Show provides a major contribu on to their fundraising and annual income and we are saddened that we are unable to assist by providing an event this year. We look forward to providing our 161st Whi lesea Show on the 6th & 7th of November in 2021.

Teaching Children In October of 2016, Eli Campbell (then aged 2) was bi en 3 mes by a coastal taipan in Queensland while collec ng eggs for his mum. The young boy suffered from a cardiac arrest and was declared dead for 6 minutes. Paramedics were able to revive him and he was brought to hospital where young Eli was put into an induced coma. He was paralysed, with significant swelling on his brain, had brain damage, was unable to use his limbs, suffering from epilep c type seizers and doctors feared that if he survived, he would be blind.

Coastal Taipan 5 months later, a er several setbacks hundreds of hours of rehabilita on, Eli was able to run, play, has developed his own language and has recovered be er than doctors would have believed. He is however now permanently affected with impaired vision, ongoing brain injury, epilep c seizures and damaged fine motor skills. It is likely he will require some form of care for the rest of his life. All of this is the example of one incident with a snake.

fortunate enough to have received a “dry bite” (which does not occur o en) and since that day, I have put in every effort to promote awareness of snakes in an a empt to prevent this from happening again (as much as possible). I receive cri cisms from keyboard warriors who think they know be er than to create awareness and teach children about snakes. But these “heroes of the internet” have never been at the cold face of catching a snake that has just bi en a pet or person while trying to keep everyone calm and coordina ng with emergency services. While we can have posi ve stories like in the case of Brayden, the possible effects of a snake bite, as you can see from the story of young Eli, can be devasta ng and ongoing. Some of the ways I promote an understanding about snakes is I go to kindergartens, schools or private groups to teach children about how to keep safe. I encourage parents and teachers to organise one of these events. The message I give to children is very simple and parents can use this too: Very young children aged 3 – 7. Typically, I have found that very young children like to approach a snake, and either stare or pick it up. Last season, there were at least 2 incidents where a 4 and 5 year old child picked up a ger snake to show their mum. Luckily no one was bi en. Reinforcing the message to NOT touch a snake and approach an adult is important to give to children.

Another example of a snake bite was in Diamond Creek in early 2017 where Brayden I prac ce the below exercise with the children in Horn (14) was bi en inside the family home kindergartens and junior schools. You can use a twice by a ger snake on his foot and the same rubber toy snake. I teach the children: snake bit his father on the leg also. Brayden was 18

about Snakes 1. If you see a snake, take 5 steps back: “1, 2, 3 step back!” (We all take a physical backward step for each word or number). 2. Use a big voice to your parents or teacher: “There's a snake. There's a snake!” (This is one of the few mes I ever encourage young children to shout – but in this circumstance it is ok) 3. Use a big voice to say: “Stay away from the snake!”4. Go to the adult immediately. 5. If bi en, immediately use a big voice: “A snake bit me!” and tell an adult. I know it might seem too simple, but prac ce this exercise with them repeatedly to reinforce the message to step from snakes and tell an adult. I have adopted this with children in this age range and found it to be very effec ve lesson a er only 2 prac ce runs. Reinforce this on a few separate occasions, especially at summer. Children aged 8 – 12. Delivering the message of staying away from snakes in school to this age group is generally quite easy. My experience working with older primary school aged children has shown that they have an improved understanding of the danger associated with snakes. The important message to focus on is that: § All snakes endemic to Melbourne are venomous. § Snakes will only bite you if disturbed or injured. § Stay away and do not touch snakes or throw things at them. § If bi en by a snake, immediately seek parent/adult assistance. § Also if bi en, dial 000 and seek medical help.

by Mark (“Snake Hunter”) Pelley

Prac ce applying the snake bite pressure bandage with children of this age. Even if it is not done perfect, it can s ll help prevent the flow of venom. § Reinforce this a few mes especially as the weather warms up. §

Delivering these simple messages to children of the appropriate age ranges can help them understand the dangers presented by

Tiger Snake Melbourne's venomous snakes and give a basic understand of how to behave if your child encounters a snake. Otherwise, one day it could be your child who picks up a ger snake to show the family or otherwise tries to take ma ers into their own hands.

Applying a Pressure Bandage Mark “The Snake Hunter” Pelley is a Melbourne based venomous snake catcher. He also works as a snake consultant teaching schools, communities and businesses how to keep safe from venomous snakes. Summer-ready 5 reasons to get your kids swimming this summer With summer now in full swing, it's the perfect me to jump in the pool, dive into the ocean, or slide into a dam to cool off on those sweltering days! But remember, safety first. With all this me spent around water there's no be er me to get your children's lessons underway and ensure the whole family is summer-ready this season. Here are just five of the many reasons to teach your children to swim from a reliable swim school.

Research has found that a staggering 41 per cent of all adults can't swim 50 metres without stopping and a further 10 per cent can't swim at Swimming is a great way to socialise and stay outdoors, even on days where the pavement is all. Parents who can't swim themselves are o en nervous and hesitant for their children to hot enough to cook an egg! Whether it's kayaking down the river, snorkelling on a family be around water. However, giving your child holiday to the Great Barrier Reef, or just playing lessons and adequate water safety training will by the pool at the annual neighbourhood BBQ – help reduce water-related incidences and provide peace-of-mind for parents, meaning there are plenty of ways learning to swim can kids and parents can enjoy those trips to the improve kids' fun this summer. pool or beach. 2. 5. A vital life skill Much like riding a bike, or learning to drive, swimming is a basic life skill every Aussie should know. It's vital to teach children how to swim, to be safe around water and make the most of what Australia has to oer. Whether you decide to enrol your children in lessons to improve their overall conďŹ dence in and around the water, or to expand your op ons for a family fun summer this season, there has never been a more perfect me.
