Executive Director Focus Hi Friends, It is hard to imagine that 2018 is coming to an end soon. This November marked my 17th year with SafeHaven Humane Society and I still start each morning with the thought, “What can I learn today?” And I still end each night feeling thankful and blessed to get to do the work I love. Four years ago, SafeHaven was finally able to open the doors to a new facility. Because of the dedication and kindness of donors like you, a belief in hard work and responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to be an organization that takes great pride in what we do, SafeHaven continues to be recognized as one of Linn County’s outstanding nonprofits. I am happy to announce that last week, SafeHaven hired our first ever veterinarian to come on board starting in January 2019. I am so pleased to welcome Dr. Amanda Gordon to our organization. This accomplishment allows SafeHaven the ability to provide critical, timely medical treatment for our animals. We look forward to what this change will bring to SafeHaven in the long run, but as always, there is still more to be done! As we get ready to ring in 2019, there are still challenges SafeHaven struggles to overcome. We have a veterinarian hired, but we still lack the ability to complete in-house medical procedures, such as spay/neuter surgeries, without transporting the animals to outside veterinarians for the procedure. Will you help us meet this challenge? Currently, spay/neuter and veterinary services cost SafeHaven over $1,500 per week. These costs will significantly decrease once we have the ability to complete the necessary surgeries and treatments onsite.
I appreciate each and every one of you: our donors, volunteers, adopters and friends. You are my heroes because you help make the work we do here at SafeHaven possible. Because of you, we save lives! And for that….I am forever thankful to you! I truly hope 2019 brings you happiness and a visit (or two) to SafeHaven!

Our contractor has given us a bid of $400,000 to complete the remodel. We will have a Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite equipped with all of the necessary equipment needed to provide in-house surgeries to SafeHaven animals. We have raised slightly over $156,000 towards this goal. Having this surgical suite will greatly impact the animals in our care, as well. The transportation to and from surgery can be stressful on the animals and this stress would be alleviated if they could stay in-house for all of their needs. We look forward to being able to offer this enhanced care to our animals! Ziggy Takes the Long Way Home Handsome cat, Ziggy, has long, luscious, dark blue/ gray fur, mesmerizing yellow eyes and a loving disposition. So, how did he spend almost a year at SafeHaven before getting adopted? True, when he arrived at SafeHaven, Ziggy was no kitten and his coat became a matted mess. Plus, over time, he developed a bit of an unhappy attitude. Also, in January, staff discovered he had a medical condition that required daily attention. Big boy, Ziggy, was diabetic.
Samantha ran her hand down his fuzzy tail to the tiny kink on the end. “That proved he was our Ziggy and I wasn’t going to leave the shelter without him,” says Samantha. “When I called my mother and told her, she cried.” Her mother relinquished Ziggy to a neighbor about 2 years ago, when that other family started feeding him and keeping him in their house. Ziggy stopped coming home and appeared to have made his choice to be with them, so she agreed. When the neighbors moved a year ago, she assumed that Ziggy had gone with them. Now, he was back home with her daughter. A happy coincidence or minor miracle?
When pets come to the shelter, much, if not all, of their history can remain a mystery. The best guess on Ziggy’s age was 5 years. This made him a “Senior Cat” with a reduced adoption fee but, a longer wait for the right person to take him home. Ziggy arrived in December, 2017 and finally was adopted on October 18, 2018. To the amazement of everyone, his adopter was part of his original, long ago family. In October, 2018, Samantha Cabe was talking with friends who come to SafeHaven frequently to visit with the animals and help socialize them. They told her about a little dog there with one eye and how difficult it is for animals with special needs to get adopted. Samantha is studying to become a Veterinary Technician and decided she wanted to adopt a special needs animal. Checking on SafeHaven’s website, she noticed a cat that looked very familiar. He looked just like the cat her mother had gotten as a tiny, sickly kitten 8 years ago and kept for 5 years. Even his name was the same, Ziggy. Could it be the same cat? At the shelter, Samantha walked into the room where Ziggy was housed, and called out, “Zigger Zoo, is that you?” He meowed and came running into her arms. As he purred and drooled (her Ziggy’s trademark), 3
For the past month Ziggy has been the happy only cat in Samantha’s household, which includes, 3 snakes, 3 lizards, 2 dogs (one adopted from SafeHaven), 9 chickens, 4 ducks and her roommate. Samantha hopes to specialize in treating exotic pets. One happy surprise for Ziggy is that his diabetes may be going into remission. Samantha has him on a strict diet to reduce him from almost 15 pounds to a healthier, lower weight. It’s already working. He has gone from needing 2 shots daily, to only one every other day. Samantha and Ziggy couldn’t be happier. She has no problem giving him shots and fluids, saying, “Really, anyone can do it. It’s that easy. My advice to everyone, is to give these older and special needs animals a chance.” She knows that Ziggy is actually 8 years old and still has lots of love left to give. Courtesy of SafeHaven, Ziggy now has a microchip as his ticket back to Samantha, should he ever stray. Samantha strongly advocates for that, and a safety release collar for cats that go outdoors, so that people recognize that they do have a home. Happy Tails NOTHING CAN SLOW FAUNA DOWN Bailea Trimble adopted Fauna in October 2016 at 4 years old. Fauna is a happy, loving girl but has had her fair share of tough days. When she was adopted, Fauna was immediately treated for Ehrlichiosis, a tick borne illness she was battling. After a short run of medication she was cleared of that illness. Next, Bailea focused on Fauna’s sensitive knee since they noticed she would limp after running or hiking. Diagnostic imaging showed she had arthritis in both of her hocks, and an old injury to her cruciate ligament in her knee. After understanding her limitations better, they were able to keep her more comfortable while still doing the things Fauna loved including enrolling her in four SafeHaven training classes, where she has a blast and loves to learn! After completing Trick Training and Family Dog Basic Manners, Fauna excelled in both Parkour classes. Fauna’s most recent medical hurdle was having a benign Mast Cell Tumor removed from the skin on her chest. Bailea shared with us that she has been such a trooper through every medical treatment and recovery, and nothing so far has slowed her down. Fauna recently celebrated her 2 year anniversary of her adoption on October 21st, and Bailea said, “�e can’t wait for many more years!” Fauna’s favorite things are her humans, her kitty, sunbathing, squeaky toys, walks, training, and going for car rides. She also loves going to the vet, thanks to the lovely staff at West Hills Animal Hospital. Her least favorite things are being cold (she has lots of sweaters), the rain, and taking baths! Fauna’s story is a true testament to how resilient animals can be and how a lot of unconditional love goes a long way.
NEW BEST FRIENDS Michelle Kobold admitted to us recently that she can’t come to SafeHaven without adopting a new pet and we found out that it was, in fact, true. Here is her story of her two pups, Vinnie & Buoy: “I visited SafeHaven on two separate occasions in the past year and a half. Each visit, I ended up locking eyes with a dog, falling in love, and adopting less than 24 hours later. Vinne, adopted in September 2017, was extremely shy and scared of pretty much everything. The sound of the radio or TV, driving in a car, and even being around other dogs frightened her. However, after much socializing and traveling, she’s evolved into a very lively, happy dog. She can’t get enough of our trips to the dog park, hikes up the trail, or travels in the car. Buoy, at eight weeks old, joined our lives in August of this year. It was a bit scary bringing her home as I didn’t know how she’d adjust or if she and Vinnie would get along. However, to my surprise, Buoy took to her new surroundings like a champ and almost immediately, she and Vinnie became inseparable. When the two aren’t sleeping or eating, they are endlessly playing, chasing each other throughout the house and yard. Their favorite times are the ones spent at the dog park. Buoy and Vinnie get right in there with the big dogs and have the time of their lives! Every day I am grateful for SafeHaven as I adopted two amazing dogs and couldn’t imagine my life without them. Thank you for the two wonderful joys I get to love on and play with day in and day out!” 4

A NIGHT FOR THE BOOKS! We would like to extend a huge Thank You to all who supported, attended, and volunteered their time at our ‘Rescue Roundup’ held September 29th at the Albany Boys & Girls Club. This is SafeHaven’s largest annual fundraising event that helps make it possible to care for and find homes for 2,500+ animals each year, as well as helping to support the many important programs SafeHaven offers in our community. Humane Education, Pet Therapy for Seniors, Meals on Wheels, Pet Food Pantry and other community outreach opportunities benefit as a result of the generosity shown by our supporters. This year was our 2nd annual Howl-O-Ween Photo Costume contest and it was so much fun! We held the contest with 4 separate categories, Best SafeHaven alumni costume, Top Dog, Best Cool Cat, and Best Fantastic Friend. The fundraiser ultimately raised $1,739 for the animals at SafeHaven! TOP SAFEHAVEN ALUM Luci was our 1st place winner in the SafeHaven Alumni category! Here is what Luci’s parent’s had to say about their time with their SafeHaven alum: “We adopted Luci (was Lu Lu) in June 2017. We had lost our beloved 16 year old CockaPoo and our 10 year old CockaPoo had never been alone. My husband had almost convinced me that Sadie (our 10 yr old) wanted to be an “only child”. But then that one day, I happened to pull up SafeHaven’s website. There she was. Little Lu Lu. I left work early that day and headed up to Tangent. I played with her in the greeting room and instantly fell in love. We visited again on Saturday with Sadie and everyone got along great. We took her home that day! She never gets more than a few feet away from me. She sleeps under the covers with her head 1st Place - Luci on my pillow and up against my back. She also Top SafeHaven Alumni loves to go in the motorhome on trips to the coast. I am so glad I found her and could give her a FOREVER home with lots of love. We are so in love with Luci and we are so impressed with SafeHaven!” 6
Community A PROJECT FOR PUPPIES In August, SafeHaven was contacted by Hunter Beal, an Eagle Scout from Corvallis, who wanted to help the animals at SafeHaven. His plan was to build a cover for our puppy pad outside so that our puppies could still enjoy their breaks during the rainy seasons. This puppy pad cover was truly a win-win, since SafeHaven received a useful cover for the animals and Hunter also achieved his Boy Scout Eagle rank by completing the project. The puppies that come to SafeHaven will be able to use this for many years to come. We think it was an creative idea and the cover was built perfectly for what we needed! Thank you Hunter for thinking of us when taking on a project like this. Because of people like you, we’re able to continue giving the animals everything they need while they are with us before finding their forever homes!
#NATIONALDOGDAY As part of National Dog Day on Sunday, August 26th, the Laura Gillott Home Team had a fundraiser where people were asked to post a picture of their dog, and for every picture posted, their office donated $1 to SafeHaven. The response from the community was outstanding and they were able to deliver a check to our organization in the amount of $525! We are so thankful for the support from Laura Gillott Home Team, as well as from the people who participated. The Laura Gillott home team was also a key player in building the dog park in Lebanon recently and has always been a huge supporter of SafeHaven. We truly enjoy working with Laura Gillott and her team!
VOLUNTEERING AS A TEAM Thank you to the Varitone Architecture, LLC team for coming to SafeHaven to volunteer! They did dishes, helped prepare dog food for our community outreach programs, and assisted with deep cleaning. The staff and animals appreciate your hard work! We love our volunteers and couldn’t stay open without them! Whether you are an individual who stops by regularly or you come to SafeHaven as part of a group, we appreciate you. Volunteering at SafeHaven Humane Society provides a great way to work directly with animals, or indirectly to assure their welfare. We have a limited paid staff and depend on hundreds of volunteers (1,005 volunteers provided 27,233 hours of support in 2017) to help care for the animals entrusted in our care. 7

We want to give a shout out to ATI Wah Chang for including us in their Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP). For every employee that volunteers and fosters for SafeHaven, ATI Wah Chang gives back to SafeHaven. In 2018, we have received $4,570!
Dr. Ken Fletcher, the owner of AAH, is also currently serving on SafeHaven’s Board of Directors and has been for many years. We can’t thank Dr. Fletcher and Dr. Eric Glaze enough for all that they do for SafeHaven.
Heidi Smith, a SafeHaven employee, is married to an ATI Wah Chang employee who recently took advantage of the program, along with foster parents, Joyce and Jeff Lindner, who foster cats and kittens for SafeHaven all year-round, earning SafeHaven $4,200. Heidi told us, “It’s an incredible program!” Her husband, Ray Smith, earned his hours by fostering kittens and enjoys the time with each litter he brings home. He was able to get his volunteer hours verified by our Volunteer Program Coordinator and sent them in to ATI. The program is not only incredibly generous, but also simple to take advantage of.
Their team is committed to educating their clients in how to keep their pets healthy year round, with good nutrition and exercise. Albany Animal Hospital, Inc. stays on top of the latest advances in veterinary technology and above all, remembers that all animals and pets need to be treated compassionately and with loving care in every check-up, procedure, or surgery.

Development GIVING TREES SUPPORT PETS IN NEED While you are out shopping this holiday season, you may run into one of SafeHaven’s Giving Trees. Each year, multiple businesses open their doors to SafeHaven by allowing us to use their space for one of our trees to support the animals. These trees all have ornaments with a photo of one of our shelter animals and items on our Wish List. If you see one of these trees and wish to participate, select your ornament and simply return gifts and ornaments to SafeHaven Humane Society or place under the Giving Tree. There are a total of 21 trees out in the community at Albany Acupuncture, Assurant, Albany Christian School, Heritage Mall, Spoletto’s Pizzeria and Wine Shop, six branches of Central Willamette Credit Union, Cool’s Feed & Pet Supply, Corvallis Feed and Seed, Wilco in Lebanon, both SafeHaven Gift & Thrift locations, Store ‘N Lock, Sully’s Stay and Play, LBCC Bookstore, and The Eye Care Team in Eugene. You’ll also find a tree in SafeHaven’s lobby! In-kind donations, or donations in the form of goods and services, is one of the major ways we sustain our shelter. Because of supporters like you, we receive thousands of bags or cans of pet food each year, which we would otherwise have to purchase. We also receive blankets, toys, cat litter, office supplies, cleaning supplies, and more! These items directly affect the time that our shelter animals spend at SafeHaven and can make them as comfortable as possible until they find their forever home! Generosity GIVING TUESDAY AT SAFEHAVEN What is Giving Tuesday? Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of collaboration and community. For Giving Tuesday this year, SafeHaven wanted a way to share with community some of the stories that melt our hearts and make every day worth it. On social media and through emails, we told you stories about Mary, a cat who was at SafeHaven for over a year; Bill, a resident at one of the senior living homes we visit each month; and Ella, a 14 year old girl who has grown up with SafeHaven and has saved so many animals in her young life. Each animals and story that passes through our doors is important and we are honored that you choose to support them with us! On Tuesday, November 27th, YOU raised $2,640 for the animals here at the shelter and the many more to come through the doors that will need our help. Many more just like Layla in this photo, who came to SafeHaven pregnant with her 8 puppies and needed a helping hand. Because of your support, Layla found an caring foster home, had her babies in a safe, loving environment, and will eventually find her forever family! Because of your support, each of the animals here and the many to come WILL find their forever homes, no matter how long it takes. 9
Fetch Fido a Flight THE ULTIMATE TRANSPORT On Saturday, September 8th, SafeHaven received over one hundred animals from a Fetch Fido a Flight transport. This was the largest transport we have ever received at one time and we prepared for a busy month of adoptions! At this time, all of the rescued animals have found wonderful homes. The transport made local news and SafeHaven was flooded with calls and visitor to see the new dogs. Draco, Doc Holiday, Keystone, Spencer, Rocko, and Toad were all adopted to a very special rescue, Northwest Battle Buddies, who are currently working with the six dogs on becoming service animals for veterans. These exceptional dogs will be professionally trained and ultimately matched with veterans who suffer from PTSD. We’re so excited for all of the animals we adopt out, but especially proud of these six dogs who will do so much good! Each time we receive a transport, it is truly astonishing that an unwanted pet in one community is quickly adopted and wanted in ours. We are so grateful for our community’s support that allows us to continue to help homeless pets from all over!
RAGS to Riches
We’d like to introduce you to Doug Healy, this quarter’s Pet Press cover dog! Doug was adopted nearly eight years ago by Jim & Dena Healy. Dena is currently serving on our Board of Directors and both she and her husband, Jim, have been supporting SafeHaven for 20 years. Doug has been involved in many SafeHaven events, and at one point even had his own “Doug’s Club” where he would spread awareness and emphasize the importance of monthly giving to homeless animals at our shelter. Doug is in many ways, the “face” of SafeHaven and continues to inspire us all. He received his second chance at life and was rescued from a terrible situation. The person who had Doug (before he was rescued) was homeless and would be seen with Doug on street corners throughout the community asking for food and money. Doug was dirty, hungry, underweight, and depressed. Dena happened to spot Doug at one of his regular spots across from Costco and she couldn’t get him out of her mind and heart. Shortly after, a blessing in disguise happened. Doug was turned in to Linn County Dog Control due to his “person” being unable to continue taking care of him. Doug somehow ended up at SafeHaven shortly after. As soon as Dena knew Doug was at SafeHaven, she came to see him, instantly fell in love and added him to their loving family! Doug now has a very blessed life where he gets to go to work every day with Jim at the law firm of Healy & McCann PC. Doug also loves attending SafeHaven events and helps to spread awareness about the homeless animals that are still waiting to find their forever homes. 10
Humane Education MEET CHARLIE! Charlie Mack started attending SafeHaven Humane Education programs as soon as he was old enough to participate and his family recently shared with us that he has loved every single one of them. From camps and volunteering, to Pets and PJs nights, Charlie has been involved with SafeHaven in almost every opportunity he can be! We recently asked Charlie about his time at SafeHaven and this is what he had to say:
Q: What is your favorite thing about coming to SafeHaven? My favorite thing about coming to SafeHaven is seeing and playing with the dogs. Q: Do you have any favorite animals that you’ve met at SafeHaven? Yes, I met Riku. He was part wolf and Siberian Husky. Also, I met my dog, Tucker. He is a Pug/Dachshund mix. Q: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from coming to SafeHaven? To treat the animals with respect.
Q: What is your favorite animal? My favorite animal is a prairie dog. Q: What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a zoologist.

Holiday Fundraising HERE COMES SANTA PAWS For over 17 years now, SafeHaven has been hosting Santa Paws at multiple locations throughout our community. Santa Paws is an annual event for families to bring their loved ones, including their animals, to get a professional photo with Santa. This is always a fun event and one that we and our supporters look forward to every year. We hosted the fundraiser on November 24th and 25th, as well as on December 1st. This year, Santa Paws raised $1,868! The days were all busy and full of Christmas cheer as people came in with their pets to visit Santa. We want to thank Coastal Farm for allowing us to use the space every year for this event, our photographers, Emily Hall and Peggy Krause, for donating their time to this event, our volunteers for making sure the day ran smoothly, Santa for visiting us during this busy season, and every one who joined us to get their photo taken!
...AND THE WINNER IS Our Christmas Tree Raffle is a wrap and we’re happy to report that we sold 187 of the $50 tickets available and raised $9,350 for the animals! Special thanks and recognition to Rebecca Swanson of The Swanson Agency for generously sponsoring this incredible fundraising opportunity for the 4th year in a row. We are also grateful to Toland Tree Farm for donating a beautiful tree and to the Expressions in Bloom team for adding their creative artistry to produce a spectacular Christmas tree!

On Saturday, December 15th, SafeHaven will be at the Albany Walmart from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm to Fill The Van with pet and shelter supplies that will support our animals for months to come. This particular fundraiser has been held five times before and each time, we are more and more delighted to see our community support SafeHaven. We are happy to report that we have successfully filled the van each time! This event is mostly volunteer run and could not be possible without the help of our volunteers. Some of the items on our wish list include high quality pet food, cleaning supplies, office supplies and even toys for the shelter animals. All of these items would otherwise need to be purchased, if not for the donations from our community which save the shelter a considerable amount of money. Volunteer Spotlight JAMES O’DONNELL We are so happy to introduce you to James, our Volunteer Spotlight for the Winter issue! James is one of our longest standing volunteers with 18 years of service. Before he started coming to SafeHaven, he volunteered for Oregon Humane Society in Portland for over 10 years. James’ favorite thing to do when volunteering is to play with the puppies. He also enjoys walking, shopping, camping and reading. James is often accompanied by his sister in law, Margaret Smith-O’Donnell, who has been coming to SafeHaven with James for 7 years now. The two of them spend a lot of time with our cats and dogs, giving them the socialization time they desperately need. James loves all of the animals and he is always smiling and so excited to be able to come and spend time with them. The staff and the animals are always happy to see James as he is a huge asset to SafeHaven Humane Society!
