Lives and works in Charlottesville, VA

BIO

Isabelle Abbot uses painting to explore the world around her and, through the tools of brush and paint, come to a deeper understanding of the landscapes she’s connected to. Abbot grew up in Greenwood, Virginia and studied art at the University of Virginia with painters Richard Crozier and Philip Geiger. She earned her Masters in Fine Arts in Painting from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro in 2011. She returned to Charlottesville, VA to teach painting at the University of Virginia before transitioning to a full-time artist. Her work is featured in the collections of Capital One, Dominion Energy, and Keswick Hall.

BIO

Penny Ashford uses photography as a tool to empower viewers to see themselves as stewards of the earth and to take positive action to preserve the great beauty of our planet. Ashford graduated from Mount Holyoke College and studied at the International Center for Photography in New York. Her work is in the collections of the Women & Infants’ Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City, among others.

JACKIE BATTENFIELD

Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY

BIO

Jackie Battenfield uses painting to create luminous works of natural forces & plants. Battenfield received a BS at Pennsylvania State University. She earned his Masters in Fine Arts from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University 1978. Her work is in the collections of the Montclair Art Museum, New York Public Library, and the Palmer Museum of Art, among others. Her work is represented in over 500 collections worldwide including: The New York Public Library, New York; The Zimmerli Art Museum, Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey; Palmer Museum, Pennsylvania; and the United States Embassy Collections, Brazil, Cambodia, Croatia, Jamaica, and Peru.

Lives and works in Charlottesville, VA

BIO

Robin Braun uses painting to portray the sublime and the more violent aspects of nature. Braun received a BA from St. John’s College, Santa Fe, New Mexico and her Masters in Fine Arts in painting from The University of Iowa in 1997. Her work is in the collections of the University of Virginia Cancer Center, Capital One, and Martha Jefferson Hospital, among others.

VIVIAN CHIU

Lives and works in Richmond, VA

BIO

VIVIAN CHIU utilizes continuous deconstruction and reconstruction to create optical sculptures and explore ideas of visibility and perception. Chiu was born in Los Angeles and emigrated to Hong Kong at the age of three. Her interests in creating objects and the visual arts led her to attend the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA ‘11 Furniture Design) and Columbia University (MFA ‘19 Sculpture). She was awarded a 2020 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Craft/Sculpture and is a recipient of the 2023-24 VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship in Crafts

DRAGANA CRNJAK

Lives and works in Youngstown, OH

BIO

Dragana Crnjak’s practice uses interdisciplinary art processes, combining painting, drawing, design, public art and site-specific installations. Bosnian born, Dragana Crnjak moved to the United States in 1997. She received a BFA from the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron. Crnajk earned her Masters in Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004. Her work is in the collections of the Progressive Collection, Capital One, and Washington Plaza, among others. Presently, she is a professor of Painting & Drawing at Youngstown State University, Ohio.

Lives and works in Alexandria, VA

BIO

David Douglas works at the intersection of drawing, painting and photography to create large-scale works that explore the power of place. Douglas received a BA from Virginia Intermont College and earned his Masters in Fine Arts in Painting from James Madison University in 1984. His work is in the collections of the Chrysler Museum of Art, The Washington Post, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, among others. Presently, he teaches painting, drawing, and photography at Episcopal High School, a boarding school in Alexandria, Virginia.

Lives and works in Indianapolis, IN

BIO

Samuel Levi Jones is inspired by questions of authority, representation, and recorded history. Jones’ practice centers on physically undoing objects associated with systems of power and control, often rearranging deconstructed books into grid-like compositions that expose their flaws and question their assumed command of the truth. He received a BFA in photography at the Herron School of Art and Design and earned his Masters in Fine Arts from Mills College, Oakland, California in 2012. His work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.

CURTIS NEWKIRK JR.

Lives and works in Richmond, VA

BIO

Curtis Newkirk Jr.’s paintings are inspired by black culture, heavily influenced by hip-hop, fashion, his southern roots, and his love for the city. Curtis strives to create work that portrays African Americans powerfully and positively and to represent black and brown people in the art community. Curtis received a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Most recently, his work was added to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts collection in Richmond, Va. He was also featured in the New American Paintings 2020 South Issue and the 2020 documentary, The Builder.

Lives and works in Charlottesville, VA

BIO

Frank Phillips uses his experience with drawing, painting, and physical activity to convey ideas of construction and shape. He received his BA with High Honors from Hobart College in 1997 and earned his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005. Phillips currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia and works at St. Anne’s-Belfield School, where he teaches Painting, Drawing, and is Chair of the Arts.

Lives and works in Charlottesville, VA

BIO

Sarah Boyts Yoder sees her paintings as hopeful, optimistic acts, and the mode of abstraction as a generous state of being. Yoder earned her Masters in Fine Arts in painting from James Madison University in 2006. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, exhibitions, and corporate and private collections throughout the United States and abroad, including the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Sarah has been the recipient of a professional fellowship in painting from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and has been a fellow multiple times at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and 100W Corsicana in Corsicana, TX.
