Kitchen Safety
T
he kitchen can be one of the most joyful rooms in the home. It is the place for family dinners, birthday celebrations and after school snacks. Unfortunately, the kitchen is also one of the most dangerous rooms of the home due to the occurrence of unintentional injuries. Burns from the stove, scalds, cuts from sharp knives and the accidental ingestion of cleaning supplies are all injuries to be aware of while in the kitchen. With the presence of kids in the home, it is important to be educated on kitchen safety. Thankfully, 90% of injuries can be prevented. Here are some ways to keep kids safe in the kitchen: Supervision: The best way to prevent kids from being injured in the kitchen is to supervise them, or not let them into the kitchen at all. Make sure you set clear rules like, 1) Do not enter the kitchen without an adult, 2) No touching the stove or oven 3) No touching the knives and 4) Always wash your hands. If your kids would like to help out in the kitchen, some safe tasks they can assist the cook with include: setting the table, rinsing produce, stirring ingredients and shucking corn. Burn Prevention: When cooking, it’s important to use the burners towards the back of the stove first. Back burners are the safest because they are out of reach of young children. When using pots and pans, be sure to turn the handles inwards to make sure little ones cannot reach and pull the pots or pans off the stove and burn themselves. Never let you kids play with pots and pans for fun, because they may confuse them as toys when they’re hot on the stove. Stove top guards can be used to help prevent kids from touching hot objects. Poison Prevention: Accidental ingestion is another cause for injury within the kitchen. Most families keep cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink. Cleaning supplies, such as Tide Pods or Clorox, smell good and can come in attractive colors, appearing to be juice or candy that kids want to eat. Be sure to use a child-resistant lock to prevent your child from accessing. If your child has ingested a potentially toxic chemical, always call your local Poison Control Center. By following these simple steps, you can keep your budding chef safe from injury.

National Indian Pudding Day
I
t was in the seventeenth century that English colonists brought hasty pudding to North America and completely transformed it. Although it was initially made with wheat, they substituted cornmeal due to a shortage of the grain at the time. The colonists had learned how to cultivate maize (corn) from the indigenous peoples. Indian pudding was derived from their name for cornmeal, Indian meal. Milk was substituted for water, and they added either molasses or maple syrup along with cinnamon, ground ginger, butter, eggs, raisins, and nuts. Indian pudding is then slowly baked for several hours, transforming its texture from the original porridge-like quality of hasty pudding to a much smoother texture which is more typical of custard.

Building Up STEAM 35 Easy Tips to Try This Weekend
STEAM (Science, Technology Engineering, Arts and Math) has grown in popularity in recent years, and the future will include STEAM-related jobs. Foster a love of STEAM at home this winter with these fun and easy ideas. In honor of National STEM/ STEAM Day on November 8th, here is 35 ideas to step up your kid’s STEAM learning!
Science
C
hildren are naturally inquisitive, and curiosity is the backbone of science discovery. Inspire kids to dive into science with these ideas: Give children a scientific start. Use scientific words and make exploring a part of everyday life. Welcome questions like “Why is the sky blue? “Questioning is the first step of the Scientific Method. Encourage household problem-solving. Bread dough that doesn’t rise, an inside door that sticks, an insect infestation in the garden are gateways to hypotheses, experiments and answers. Create a kitchen science lab. Make homemade ice cream in a Ziploc bag, make butter out of heavy cream in a mason jar or grow geodes in eggshells. Have a blast — literally! Many safe experiments involve eruptions. Make a paper mache baking soda and vinegar volcano. Go outside and drop a pack of Mentos in a 2-liter soda or launch a bottle rocket. Discuss the science behind the blast. Grow a garden. Start seedlings from kitchen vegetable seeds or trimmings. Relate science to hobbies. Learn the physics behind the fastball or how the gymnast balances on the beam.

F
uture jobs will require technology. Embrace screen benefits that build technology skills.
Make the computer your friend. Teach your child how to do research, make brochures for school projects and use spreadsheets for chores and allowance. In anticipation of future trips, let your child research destinations. Start coding. Check out code.org for fun ways kids can code online or without technology. Be positive. Even if you don’t think you’re good at art, try some art mediums along with your child. He or she will be more willing to try, too.

Stock building supplies. Try Legos, wooden blocks, K’nex, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys and Duplo bricks. Also keep recyclables like cardboard, paper towel tubes and cereal boxes. There are even edible options like cheese, grapes and marshmallows. Pair one of these with toothpicks or pretzels for building. Encourage children to complete tower building challenges. One fun and easy way to do this is with notecards or old playing cards and no other materials. Kids can only fold the cards, no ripping or cutting. Create Catapults. Some materials to try: Popsicle sticks, spoons, drink lids, rubber bands and pom poms. Build a Rube Goldberg machine out of household materials. Listen to a variety of music genres. This will open your child’s mind to different artists and styles of music. Sign your child up for a virtual creative writing class. Read poetry books.
Join a radio control club. Planes, helicopters and boats often inspire children. Building their own involves creativity and problem-solving skills.

here are many ways to make math relevant and interesting. Research shows that most children can succeed at math.
Teach number sense. Mentally work through problemsolving logic with your child. “Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late” by Laura Overdeck is a good book for promoting math discussions. Check out Texas Instruments’ “STEM Behind Cool Careers” (https://education.ti.com/en/activities/stem/gen-stem) for videos connecting algebra, geometry and physics to jobs like fashion design, flying jets and more. Cook or bake together. Measuring, equivalent fractions and conversions are all part of recipe building. Measure the miles. When going on family outings, find the distance with your child. Calculate the miles and time it will take to get there and how much gas will cost. Assign chores and give an allowance. They’ll be asking for ice cream and movie money anyway, so why not teach practical budgeting skills in the process?

our child wakes up with a sore throat and you begin an internal debate of whether to keep your child home or send them to school. On one hand, you do not want your child to struggle through the school day because they don’t feel well but, on the other hand, having your child catch up on school work and taking a day off of work yourself can be difficult if your child feels fine after getting their day started. How is a parent to know when it’s best to keep your child home to rest and reduce the risk of spreading illness to other kids? Let’s look at some common symptoms kids have and when it’s ok to go to school and when it’s best to stay home and recuperate. 16 Boston Parents Paper | November 2023
Symptom – Fever If your child wakes up with a fever over 101 degrees then they should stay home from school. Giving ibuprofen or acetaminophen will help bring your child’s fever down but the temperature should be taken prior to medicine given to determine if your child should go to school that day or not. A child with a fever is most likely contagious so they should stay home.
Symptom – Sore throat If your child has a mild sore throat due to allergies or cold symptoms then they are most likely well enough to attend school. If the sore throat is severe it could be strep throat and you should take your child to a doctor to be tested. If your child tests positive for strep throat, they should be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school to avoid spreading illness.
Symptom – Pink eye (conjunctivitis) Pink eye is extremely contagious. If your child has yellow/green discharge coming
out of their eye or the white of the eye is a pink color then your child should stay home until they have seen a doctor. Most schools will require a note from a doctor saying the child is well enough to return to school or that the child take antibiotic eye drops for 24 hours before attending school.
Symptom – Headache If your child wakes with a headache but does not have a fever it is most likely safe to send them to school. However, if your child is excessively tired or has other symptoms besides just a mild headache it is possible, they are coming down with something and it might be best to stay home and rest.
Symptom – Rash If your child has a rash from an unknown source keep them home until you are able to see a doctor to determine what the cause is. Rashes can be caused by many things and some of them are contagious. If you know the cause of your child’s rash such as ringworm or impetigo, use the appropriate measures to ensure it doesn’t spread.
Symptom – Ear ache If your child has ear pain and no other symptoms, they are not contagious and can technically go to school. If the ear pain is causing discomfort, loss of sleep, or a fever, staying home to recuperate may be the best choice.
Symptom – Tummy troubles If your child is having diarrhea or is vomiting, they will need to take the day off of school. Not only are they contagious but they probably aren’t up for their usual routine anyway.

If your child has extreme fatigue or generally feels unwell, it might be the sign of something to come and it may be best to rest at home. Usually, when it comes to stopping the spread of illness, it’s best to be safe than sorry. When in doubt, keep your child home until they are back to their normal, active self. Why Consider a Private School?
Many parents feel that their children will thrive better in what they believe is a smaller, safer environment with more room for personal attention. PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS, where tuition is typically one-third that of independent schools, offer traditional instruction and have solid reputations. Families who are “in-parish,” that is, who live within the schools’ official parish boundaries or volunteer and participate regularly in the parish, get first priority. Otherwise, the application procedures are similar to independent schools. When considering private school education, think about these benefits: High academic standards. Private schools nurture intellectual curiosity, stimulate personal growth, and encourage critical thinking. A larger percentage of students at private schools are enrolled in advanced courses than in public. Small classes and individual attention. Private schools have low student-teacher ratios that encourage close connections with students. for Applying to a Private School
While each school follows its own schedule, here is a typical admissions timeline. Many schools are now offering both in-person and virtual admission events.

(Of the year before you want your child to attend) • Define your ideal school • Find schools that match your child’s and family’s needs • Research and ask questions of schools on your preliminary list
SEPTEMBER
• Browse schools’ websites and look books to learn more about their programs and philosophies • Request admissions and financial assistance material by phone or online • Review admissions materials to determine which schools to visit • Create a calendar of pertinent admission and financial assistance deadlines for the schools to which you are considering applying • Ask elementary schools about their test schedules and make appointments • Register for any standardized tests required for admission • Review the test websites to learn about procedures and test dates, see sample questions, and purchase test-preparation books • Contact schools to schedule individual tours, class visits, interviews, and “shadow days” if available
