How to Get Your Child to Do Homework Without a Fight By Carol Tuttle

When it comes to your child’s homework, do you beg, plead, or bribe? Do you threaten consequences? You can make homework easier for both you and your children with some simple tips that honor their natural energy. Every child has a dominant Energy Type that determines the way they move through life. It affects everything they do—playing, talking, eating, sleeping. And yes, it even shows up in the way they do homework! Ready to take the struggle out of homework? Here are homework tips for the 4 Types of children:

Type 1 - Homework Tips for the Fun-loving These bright-minded children think quickly and like to move. Their thought process works like snapshots of ideas, so engaging in a linear experience can be challenging for them. ■■Pre-homework playtime. If your child attends a

traditional school, they need time to do something light and free before jumping into homework. Let them come up with ideas of what they’ll do—that will

6

Our Kids Magazine | September 2018

give them something to look forward to during the structured experience of school. ■■Homework jumping. Allow them to jump from one

activity to another. That’s how their brain works anyway. Extra movement of things going on in the background is actually helpful for them because it allows them to disconnect from their homework and then connect again.

Type 2 - Homework Tips for the Sensitive These subtle children work methodically and are great with details. They are naturally quieter, so speaking up about what they might need can be a challenge for them. ■■Planned routine (one that they plan). These children

do best when they have a plan that they have made themselves. Which steps will they follow to get things done? You can ask this very young (5 or 6 years old) as Type 2 children are already thinking this way. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

■■Invitation to connect. Type 2 children often want their

parents to recognize the work they’re doing without knowing how to ask for it. Take a second to connect with them while they’re working and invite them to share with you.

Type 3 - Homework Tips for the Determined

These active children move swiftly and like getting things done. Their natural speed can be a challenge when it comes to detailed tasks they feel are tedious or pointless. ■■Help them see the point of it. These children will do

homework when they see the point. If they don’t see it, they’ll try to get around it somehow. They’ll pick the grade they want and do as much as they have to do to get it done. Help them see the practical purpose.

OPEN HOUSE Come see why more families are choosing Brooks!

■■Make homework part of the extracurricular fund.

Money is a great motivator in the Type 3 world. If you plan to pay for extracurricular activities, you could attach a money value to finishing homework and that money goes to a sport or lesson they really want. You’ll be spending the money anyway and they’ll enjoy the feeling of accomplishment as they work toward an activity they really want.

Type 4 - The More Serious

These focused children are self-motivated. But if they’re not respected for who they are at school, they’ll buck the system. It will look like rebellion, but it’s really just their attempt to stay true to their nature. ■■The respectful phrase. These children feel offended

when you tell them what to do because they’re aware of their responsibilities. Try this phrase: “Looks like you’re doing great. Let me know if you need help.” Let them come to you, which they will, if they think they need help.

■■Ownership of a space. Set aside one consistent place

that they can take ownership of at the same time every day to do their homework—not the kitchen table. If possible, get them their own desk or a place that’s separate from where everyone is moving around.

Parents, here’s your homework assignment to end the homework struggle for good. Set the intention that you and your child are experiencing ease and enjoyment as you support them in their homework. It’s possible and you can start today. FIELD TRIP DIRECTORY

The Power of Awe How Field Trips Can Teach Our Children By Sandi Schwartz

We sometimes have special moments in life that are so profound we don’t even know how to describe them. Maybe you just spotted a rainbow, watched a video about our expansive universe, or stood in front of a gorgeous mountain or ocean. The emotion you feel is hard to grasp—an overwhelming mix of wonder, joy, and sometimes even fear. These moments are so exhilarating that we get goosebumps on our arms, feel tingling up and down our spine, tears flood our eyes, and our jaw drops. This is called awe. Awe is an emotion that has a powerful effect on our body and mind. It is a feeling very hard to put into words. David Delgado, a visual strategist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory ( JPL) and co-founder of the Museum of Awe who spoke at the Greater Good Science Center’s recent Art and Science of Awe conference, describes awe as an instant when you can’t quite grasp something. “It feels like magic, amazement, mystery, reverence. It’s the moment when we realize it’s a gift and privilege to be alive.” Awe allows us to transcend the ordinary, tests our concept of time and scale, gives us the sense of being small in a grand universe, and helps us to truly be in the moment. 8

Our Kids Magazine | September 2018

Awe can be triggered by different things for different people. It can result from profound beauty; spending time in nature; feeling connected to others; remarkable human accomplishments; scientific discoveries; or great works of architecture, art, and music. One of the best ways to help children experience more moments of awe is to take them out of their daily routine to see and learn about new topics. School field trips are so important to helping children experience more awe.

How Awe Transforms Us

On average, we feel awe only about two and a half times per week, Dacher Keltner explains. As our culture becomes more self-focused and over-worked, awe provides an amazing tool to instill a deeper sense of worldliness, kindness, and peace in our children. Recent research shows that awe can make us happier and healthier in a number of significant ways.

Broadens Social Connection

FIELD TRIP DIRECTORY that “awe boosts a person’s generosity, willingness to help others, willingness to behave in ethical ways, to take on needs of others, and de-prioritize their own needs. Awe connects us to things larger than ourselves and motivates us to care for others and the collective good.” His experiments prove that when people experience a moment of awe, they tend to be more generous. He had participants first either look up into tall, beautiful trees or at a large building. They then came across a person who needed assistance. Those in the tree group were more apt to help to the person in need.

Changes Our Perception Of Time

greater than ourselves. A study at the University of California, Berkeley concluded that awe makes us lose our awareness of “self ” and feel more connected to the world around us. This helps get rid of dangerous “us versus them” thinking. Additionally, when we witness a remarkable moment, we want to share it with other people, causing us to bond with family, friends, and even strangers.

Stimulates Curiosity

When we observe something awesome—like images of Earth from space, a fascinating science experiment, or a talented athlete—we want to learn more about how it is all possible. Curiosity is so critical to children’s growth and success. Even though their constant questions may be trying at times, it is ultimately what we want them to do so they are always craving new knowledge. What’s even more incredible is that people who are curious tend to get along better with others.

Expands Creativity

Awe inspires us to be more creative because we begin to view the world in a broader sense. This expansive thinking helps us consider new perspectives and see beyond our present situation. In a 2012 study from Tel Aviv University, one group of children was asked to look at a series of photos, starting with basic everyday objects and then shifting to vast or faraway things like the Milky Way galaxy. The other group was shown the same images but in the opposite order. The children who saw the objects from small to expansive performed significantly better on creativity tests.

Leads To Kindness and Generosity

Paul Piff, assistant professor of psychology and social behavior at University of California, Irvine, has found 10

Our Kids Magazine | September 2018

In our hectic 24/7 lifestyle, don’t you wish we had more time? Awe has been shown to give us the illusion that we do have more time and no longer need to rush. A 2012 Stanford University study published by Psychological Science found that participants who watched awe-inspiring videos featuring whales, waterfalls, and other nature scenes were more likely to report feeling like they had more time.

Guides Us To Find Our Purpose In Life

Positive psychology researchers have discovered that people who have a clear purpose in life experience less pain and anxiety and are less depressed. By being connected to something larger than ourselves through awe, we are more likely to be inspired and motivated to face new challenges and reach our goals. Research shows that children who grow up with a sense of purpose are typically happier, have a more successful career, and have stronger relationships later in life.

Makes Us Grateful

Awe gives us a sense of hope and the ability to see the bigger picture. It teaches us that there might be something magical in everyday life that we can be grateful for. Louie Schwartzberg, creator of the Gratitude Revealed video series, says that “Awe inspires us to open our hearts and minds to engender gratitude.”

Improves Our Immune System

Researchers at Berkeley have discovered that awe reduces the level of pro-inflammatory proteins (called cytokines) that cause our immune system to work harder. This is important because high levels of cytokines cause illness. “That awe, wonder and beauty promote healthier levels of cytokines suggests that the things we do to experience these emotions…has a direct influence upon health and life expectancy,” suggested Dacher Keltner, co-author of the study.

Reduces Anxiety and Depression

Feelings of awe boost our mood. Our nervous system Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

FIELD TRIP DIRECTORY reacts in the opposite way to awe than anxiety. Instead of the “fight or flight” response kicking in, awe keeps us still and relaxed, benefiting both our body and mind. Additionally, elevated cytokines have been linked to depression. As discussed earlier, awe reduces these cytokine proteins, therefore, reducing depression.

Ways to help our children experience awe

The world offers so many opportunities for us to feel awe, but how can we capture these moments for our children? The key is to seek out experiences that 1) involve a sense of vastness and b) alter their perspective. Fortunately, children are born with a sense of wonder and amazement. “They are naturally curious and interested, with a great imagination and a special ability to see beauty and good all around them,” explains Dr. Brenda Abbey, educational consultant and director of Childcare by Design in Australia. However, children need direction from their parents who can share these moments with them. “We need to model, identify, respond to, preserve, nourish, enrich, and sustain these special moments in our lives.” By visiting, recording, viewing, and listening while on field trips, our children will be exposed to many

potential awe moments. To make the most out of these experiences, take the time to ask your children how these encounters make them feel. Reflection reinforces the positive energy and encourages curiosity. Andy Tix, professor at Normandale Community College in Minnesota who writes about awe on his blog Reflections on Mystery and Awe, notes that “awe seems more likely to thrive in an environment of inquisitiveness and questioning”. So, ask lots of questions and allow your children to do the same.

Visit

In order for children to truly understand awe, they need to experience it. Andy Tix believes that travel provides endless opportunities for awe because we are exposed to stimuli that are out of our typical routine. He suggests families take “awecations”, instead of just vacations, to places that can inspire awe. If you can’t get away, look for local spots to explore. Please remember to consider your child’s age, interest, and attention span when you choose where to take them. We can find awe just about anywhere. Here are a few ideas for your next awe adventure: Nature: zoos, mountains, forests, hiking trails, beaches, waterfalls, clear starry nights, sunsets, sunrises, botanical gardens, canyons, caves MAKE THIS

Writing: Developing an awe narrative is an effective way for children to capture an awe-inspiring moment. Julie Mann, high school teacher in Queens, New York who also spoke at The Art and Science Of Awe conference, added journal writing to her curriculum as a way for students to reflect about awe for time, space, amazing events, and people who impact their lives. Artwork: Ask your children to create their own masterpiece to reflect something that brought them awe. Tap into their talents using drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, or collage.

View

Media: If you are unable to visit a place in person, the next best thing is to observe it using various media tools such as videos, photographs, slideshows, and even 3D or 4D movies at an IMAX theater. Images of nature’s beauty, such as sunrises, sunsets, weather events, and rainbows, tend to easily evoke feelings

of awe. Check out these nature documentaries, Jason Silva’s Shots of Awe, and Louie Schwartzberg’s Gratitude Revealed. Science experiments: Observing the incredible way science works can be quite powerful for a young child and peak their interest to learn more.

Listen

Stories: Read awe-inspiring books, poetry, and short stories to your children, such as biographies about great heroes and descriptions of nature, scientific discoveries, great places, and historical events. Music: Listen to touching music or play your own. From piano ballads of the great composers to rap songs about changing the world, your child will discover what moves them. Awe offers so many ways for our children to prosper in this challenging world. Actively seeking opportunities like school field trips can help them experience awe, which is so critical to their overall health and well-being. Plus, it’s exciting, fun, and they are bound to learn something new! Sandi Schwartz is a freelance writer/blogger and mother of two. Back- to-School Hustle 5 Tips for Working Moms By Holly Caplan

From the moment my daughter got out of school in May to the end of July, was a complete blur. It was a blur of summer camp, work, travel, deadlines, proposals and pool parties. The fact that she was going back to school in three weeks had not occurred to me. When it did, I panicked. Where did the time go? I frantically realized I had no idea what day school started and had to ask another mom. I got a brisk answer of “August 20th,” which I like to call the “working mom fail” response. The guilt of not knowing when my child starts 2nd grade and feeling completely overwhelmed set in. Where do I begin? I’ve got to sign her up for fall activities, get a new backpack, lunchbox, some new clothes and also manage my job, meetings, travel and various work expectations. As working moms I think we feel there is no easy way to do all of this and keep a clear head and stay on task, but I have found five great tips for surviving back to school as a working mom:

1. Order Online:

Spare yourself the hustle of shopping. No need to throw everyone in the car in 100-degree heat to head to your favorite retail super store, fend off the kiddos requests for toys and candy while back-to-school shopping. It is not worth it. Modern technology allows us 18

Our Kids Magazine | September 2018

the ability to order online for backpacks, clothing and supplies. Think of the time and energy you will save by sitting on your couch and checking some boxes and swiping “check out”. This also applies to grocery shopping too, which is becoming more and more common. Download the app for Shipt or Amazon Prime and let them do the grocery shopping for you. Do it a day or two before school starts. The kids can make their requests so they get to put some creativity into their lunchbox choices. Other positives are that it isn’t expensive to shop online and it saves money because you avoid over-buying in a store.

2. Let the Laundry Lie: Where does your laundry lie? Mine sits on a bed in the guest room. Clean, yet unfolded. But clean. The point here is, let your laundry lie. It is okay to let some things slip during back -to -school time. You will have so much on your plate as it is, don’t let the mundane domestic stuff get to you. Not having every thing completed or accomplished around the house is okay. You will not get a ticket or a fine for letting some things in the household fall behind. Give yourself permission to know that it is okay if you don’t get everything done. It is completely normal, and you will eventually catch up. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

PLANET PARTY

3. Get Your Routine Back: In the summer our routines are typically off. As I mentioned, it can feel like a complete blur when so much is going on. Activities, camp and work will run you, instead of you running them. No shock there. Bringing structure and school back into your life can be a struggle, but welcome it because it brings the return of normalcy. Give yourself a cushion returning to the routine by practicing earlier bedtimes and waking times week before school starts. This will get us parents and kids back on schedule. Also, create a family calendar with upcoming school activities and your work schedule to make sure that all planets are aligned, and if not, this gives you time to create a family management strategy.

4. Be Guilt Free: I think the hardest thing about being a working mom during back -to -school is missing school events. The hallmarks of the beginning of the school year like Fall Festival or Meet the Teacher are big events for the kids. Missing them can make you feel disconnected from their little lives and the guilt can take over. This is also difficult because you miss the chance to meet other parents and classmates at these events. You start to feel like a constant outsider because you are the mom who isn’t around enough. 5. Connect with other working moms: I have a lot of wonderful friends who are stay- at -home moms. They tend to keep me grounded and I rely on them a lot for my sanity. Working mom friends can be super supportive too because they are most likely experiencing the same emotions and situations. For overall complaining, coping and time management ideas your working mom friends will happily listen and help you. In addition, their schedules will most likely parallel yours, so for all of those 2:30 play dates you have missed, you can now do play dates on schedules that accommodate the work day. The silver lining here is that you get to solidify strong relationships with other women who will stand by you when you need support. Managing back-to-school time will never be perfect or fool proof, but working outside of the home can bring on some added stress. It is balancing act that can cause disruption as you get adjusted to the new school year and schedules. Know that you are not alone, and we are all muddling through it together. Organizing Kids’ School Papers and Art Projects By Sarah Lyons

If you have school-age children, you are most likely dealing with an ever growing stack of school papers and artwork. Some of the papers may go straight to the recycle bin but what do you do with the important papers and special artwork you would like to keep?

Start by sorting Before you can start organizing your child’s paperwork and art projects you need to decide what to discard and what to keep. “I keep things that reveal his personality” says Kara Thomas, mom to a ten-year-old son. Set aside papers that show your child’s writing skills and artwork that you feel is unique to your child’s personality. Discard worksheets or daily papers. Make another stack of papers that have information you need such as calendars, directories, or spelling lists. Try to sort items at least once a week so the paper stack does not get out of control. “Parents may want to feature their child’s artwork by hanging it frames on the wall. This gives them the opportunity to enjoy it, then change the pictures over time.” says Stephanie Davis, a Certified Professional Organizer, from Let’s Get Organized in Ridgeland..

Start a keepsake box A keepsake box is a space for you to save items that mean something to you or your child. Davis, suggests using a file box. “A keepsake box causes you to constantly purge and evaluate what you really want to keep” says Davis. Some parents may have a file for each grade level but Stephanie suggests sorting items by type, such as artwork, invitations, pictures, projects, and adventures. This will give the file box a more defined purpose and is easier for the parent to maintain. “The keepsake boxes should be stored where they are easy to get to. If it is stored on a closet shelf it is less likely to be used than if it is stored somewhere that is easily accessed.” 20

Create a family binder As a mom of six, our family has our fair share of paperwork. Creating a family binder for important information has helped me stay organized. Each family member has a tab and their sports calendars, school directories, and medical information are stored there. When I need something in a hurry, I know right where to look. “I encourage families to go digital. They can use one family calendar app so everyone knows what is going on and important papers can be scanned and computerized as well.” says Davis. “I try to be flexible and figure out what works for each family.”

Go digital Some parents may find it easier to go digital when it comes to storing their child’s artwork and school papers. Joanna Cline, mother of three, says “I use the Artkive app to store my kids’ art. At the end of the year I will make a photobook of their artwork.” Other apps that help save artwork are DearMuse or Keepy. Many of these apps have family sharing available. The main thing to remember is the items we want to keep will develop and change over time. As you add to your keepsake box, you may find that some items don’t seem as important a few years later and it is okay to discard them to make room for the things that you value now. Parents should never feel guilty about not keeping every single paper, painting, and essay. Realistically it’s only important to keep the items that mean the most. With six children in three schools, she is very familiar with the need to organize school papers and art projects. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Book Review Ahh, September! School is back in full swing, and lots of reading is likely happening at your house! This month brings the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, when the contributions and cultures of Hispanic and Latino Americans are celebrated. Try one of the books below to start conversations with your kids about Hispanic Heritage! My Abuelita, by Tony Johnston and illustrated by Yuyi Morales. © 2009 In this magnificently illustrated picture book, a little boy helps his grandmother get ready for her day at work as a storyteller! They follow their regular morning routine, and of course, she takes all kinds of wonderful items with her. The multimedia illustrations will hold even the youngest child’s attention and will start conversations about how the picture was created. Spanish words are sprinkled generously throughout the story as the little boy and his grandmother talk, but non-Spanish speakers can easily follow the conversation. Challenge your child to build a picture out of found objects and tell a story about it after reading this book together! Ages 3-8. The Pot That Juan Built, by Nancy Andrews-Goebel and illustrated by David Diaz. © 2002 The true story of Juan Quezada, a Mexican pottery artist, is told in rhyming,

cumulative verse. “This is the pot that Juan built,” begins the story - with more detailed information on the adjoining page. Each double-page spread adds a line or two to the verse on one side and more informational text on the other. Colorful, folk-art paintings light up every page, and actual photos of Quezada’s work appear in the Afterword with more biographical information. Ages 5-10. My Big Barefoot Book of Spanish & English Words, by Sophie Fatus. © 2014 Suitable for children aged 2 10, this oversize picture book presents more than 700 vividly illustrated words in both English and Spanish. On one page, for example, children get dressed: “¡A vestirse!” appears alongside the words “Let’s get dressed!” and pictures of more than 25 articles of clothing are shown with the words in both languages. Other pages include a city shopping scene, a construction site, and a supermarket. Diverse characters from all races and countries work and play together throughout the book, providing lots of conversation starters about people getting along with each other despite differences.
