Feature

Memory Makers For Your Easter Celebration By Pam Molnar

Easter reminds us of renewed life, new beginnings and the feeling of spring in the air. It is no wonder that our commercialized celebration of the holiday includes bunnies, baskets, eggs and all things spring. This year, mix in some kid friendly fun with your traditional celebration and create memories that will last a life time.

Fun with Eggs

Make Cascarones (Confetti Eggs). Hollow out raw eggs by making a small whole one end and letting the egg drain out into a bowl. When the eggs are empty, rinse the inside and let them dry overnight. In the morning, fill with glitter or confetti using a small funnel. Place glue around the hole on the egg and decorate the egg with colored tissue paper. Take the eggs to the yard and try to smash them on the heads of friends and family, which signifies good luck. Create your own egg heads. Crack and remove the top part of an egg, leaving at least 2/3 of the shell in tack. Rinse the eggs and let dry. With markers, make silly faces on the egg shells. Fill the eggs almost to the top with soil and grass seed. Place the eggs in an egg carton and keep it in a sunny spot. Water as needed and watch the grass grow to look like green hair. Cut or style as needed. Make yarn eggs using water balloons. As you are blowing up balloons with air, insert small toys, candy or dollar bills into the balloon. Tie up as usual. Drop colorful yarn strands in glue and use fingers to wipe off excess. Wrap around the balloons crossing back and forth to make a little cage. When the yarn dries, pop the balloon and the prize remains inside the egg shaped yarn.

Be charitable

Make boo-boo bunnies for a local children’s hospital or woman’s shelter. You will need a washcloth, rubber band and a plastic ice cube (found on Amazon, Bed Bath and Beyond or the Dollar Store). For directions, see side bar. Create mini Easter baskets to hand out at the senior centers. Use baskets from the Dollar Store and fill with hard candy, hand lotions, a magnifying glass, slipper socks or a large type deck of cards. Make Easter s’mores in a jar to pass out to neighbors and friends. You will need one pint jar with lid, 1 sleeve of crushed graham crackers, 1 ¼ cups of M & M candies, 1/3 cup of brown sugar and 8 bunny peeps. Arrange dry ingredients in the jar and place bunny peeps around the jar facing out. 6

Our Kids Magazine | April 2019

Cover with lid or fabric and attach gift tag (see side bar) with instructions.

Do something as a family

Explain the Easter story to the kids by making Resurrection Rolls. You will need refrigerated crescent rolls, marshmallows, cinnamon, sugar and melted butter. Dip marshmallows in melted butter and then roll in cinnamon and sugar. Wrap up in the refrigerated crescent rolls. Bake per package instructions. For accompanying story, see side bar. Watch Easter shows like “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown”, “Hop”, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” or “Veggie Tales – An Easter Carol”. For older kids you may want to also include “Easter Parade” or “The Greatest Story Ever Told”. Plant jelly beans with your child in the garden or flower beds. When they are asleep, the jelly beans will sprout into lollipops (with a little help from Mom and Dad).

Find those Easter Baskets

Show the kids evidence of the Easter Bunny’s visit by making a jelly bean trail from your child’s bedroom door to their Easter Baskets. If you have pets, be sure to have them sleep with you that night to keep them from eating your trail. Hunt for Easter Baskets by leaving clues. Start with a note on their bedroom door leading them to different clue spots around the house and let them find the Easter basket in a crazy place like inside the dryer or tucked behind the couch. Attach a piece of different colored yarn around each child’s door knob. Take the string down the hall and through the house wrapping it around chairs, inside closets and under couches to lead them to their Easter basket that is hidden somewhere in the house. CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Summer Camps with Flair By Jan Pierce, M.Ed.

Most of us remember summer camp. It was great: Rustic cabins, swimming in the lake, arts and crafts, songs around a campfire and capture the flag in the evenings. It still sounds good to me. But times have changed and lots of kids are more excited to plan a summer adventure around performance academies than attend a traditional summer camp. There are lots of options and while they are not inexpensive, they do offer wonderful opportunities for your kids. They can be week-long overnight experiences, or day camps only. Here are some of the possibilities. Check your local area for availability. Dance and Theater Camps: Dance and theater camps will focus every day on training classes and rehearsals with an eye to a final performance at the end of the camp. Theater offerings may include improvisation, comedy, costume and set design, prop-building, sound mixing, filmmaking, musical theater or stage make-up. Many theater camps offer two or three week options to maximize the quality of the final performances. Dance camps may begin their day programs with children as young as two years and offer ballet, tap and jazz, hip-hop, and modern dance courses ranging in difficulty from beginners to advanced courses. Again, a performance at the end of the course of study is usually the highlight of the camp. Music Camps: For children interested in advancing their musical skills, or for those who just love to sing, there are tons 8 Our Kids Magazine | April 2019

of music camp options. Children may take private lessons from skilled teachers, or learn to sing or play in ensembles. They can study band instruments, orchestra instruments or focus on just piano or violin. There are classes in music theory, sight-reading, songwriting or voice. A wide variety of musical experiences are available from rock and roll to classical. Music camps are great for honing skills or trying something brand new. Clown/Circus Camps: Get ready for some fun at circus or clown camps. Kids learn such skills as plate-spinning, balloontwisting, stilt-walking, scarf juggling or riding a unicycle. Or they can learn to be a clown as they create costumes, learn to apply clown make-up, and learn the gags and slapstick antics of being a clown. Final performances are the norm here as well. Art Camps: There are lots of opportunities for kids to delve into art and art-related projects in summer art camps. Many of these are local and offer day courses for children aged five and up. Others are destination camps that integrate art activities with traditional summer camp experiences. Abrakadoodles camps offer process art experiences in which the focus is on what is learned as a piece of art is produced. There may be theme-based art camps as well as a wide variety of art training in such skills as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and clay sculpture, or origami. CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES Science/Technology Camps: STEM courses are all the rage today and well they should be in this age of technology. Courses in programming, coding, robotics, modeling/ animation, video game design and team problem-solving will be available. Often STEM camps are designed around themes such as Minecraft, Legos or Star Wars and offer group challenges. The camps may be offered by your local children’s museums or science centers. Courses in marine science or biological studies may incorporate laboratory experiments while engineering courses may emphasize inventions. Science, technology, engineering and math—get your kids in on the fun. Foreign Language Camps: If you aren’t taking a trip out of country this summer, you might want your kids to have the benefit of a language summer camp. They’ll be immersed in the language, cuisine and culture of another country while at camp. Native speakers will lead the activities as kids learn to sing songs, create skits and play games all designed to deepen their experience in a foreign language. Many language camps end with a special performance or celebration highlighting the learning accomplished. Adventure Camps: No time for boredom in these summer camps. Everything from backpacking to rock climbing, wilderness treks to survival hikes, scuba diving to whitewater rafting. What’s your pleasure? Take a look at www.adventurecamp.com

a High-energy, hands-on stem camp

Dude Ranches and Horse Camps: Your child will leave city life behind when attending a summer horse camp. Courses on animal care, roping, riding and vaulting will be given along with extended time to build a relationship with a horse, ride and care for it, and experience some of what it’s like to live on and run a ranch. Leadership, nature-based arts and crafts and swimming might round out the offerings. Sports Camps: We’re familiar with camps to improve skills in basic sports such as baseball, basketball, football and soccer. But there are many other choices. How about gymnastics, archery, water-skiing, horseback riding, tennis, crew, field hockey, volleyball or water polo? This might be an opportunity to try a whole new sporting experience and find a sport to enjoy for life. Check out www.ussportscamps.com.

Miscellaneous Camps: It’s hard to categorize some of the camping experiences available to kids today. How about Social Skills camp, D.J. camp, Extreme Sports camps, Wizards and Warriors Role Playing camp, or Rock and Roll Camp? If you’re serious about planning a performance summer camp experience for your kids, do your research early. These camps tend to fill up early and there are specials on the costs if you apply early. • WEEKLY SPORTS CAMP M-F 8:00a.m.-5:30p.m. (includes tennis and swimming)

There are few things more exciting in a kid’s life than their first sleepaway camp. How do you prepare a kid – and yourself – for this big event? Drawing on my own experiences as the parent of a 15-year-old boy who’s a happy camper, as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve identified 8 things you should do.

You want your kids to take ownership of this exciting experience. To do that, prepare for camp together: shop together for all the stuff on the packing list and pack jointly using luggage that isn’t too difficult to carry. You should also build excitement by talking to your kids about all the incredible things they’re going to experience, and explain the rules and expectations of the camp.

Pack Clothing For All Kinds Of Weather

When you pack your kids’ clothes, don’t pack their best items. Whether it’s a sports camp or any other type of camp, there are likely to be outdoor activities where clothing will get stained, torn, or ruined. Pack their most durable clothes, and make sure that there are clothes for all kinds of weather – both sunny, warm days and rainy, cool days. Most importantly, label everything with your kids’ names. A good friend of ours forgot to do that for their daughter’s first sleepaway camp. She came home with all kinds of wild clothes they’d never seen before.

Have a Sleepover – Or Two

Your kids are going to be away from you, possibly for the first time, for an extended period of time. Some kids have absolutely no problem adjusting; others might need to dip their feet in the water slowly, so to speak. Organize a couple of sleepovers with their friends – and do it at their friends’ houses – to get them used to being away from you.

Speak to Parents In Your Neighborhood No matter how confident your kids are that they’re going to be just fine without you, it’s always a good idea to bring them some comfort from home to camp. Reach out to other parents from your kids’ school or your neighborhood to see if they plan on sending their kids to the same camp. Most camps let parents request that their kids bunk with one or more of their regular friends. They’re going to meet lots of other kids and make lots of new friends as well.

Most sleepaway camps have a store where kids can buy candy with money that parents have contributed to an account. Ask the camp director what amount parents typically contribute to this account – and then contribute the same amount. Kids compare themselves to other kids, and no kid wants to be the odd one out with less money to buy candy than everyone else. Conversely, you don’t want to over-contribute to the candy account.

Communication and Care Packages Find out what the camp’s policy is when it comes to communicating with your kids via email, letters and care packages. Are you allowed a certain number of emails or letters? How many care packages are you permitted to send, and are their rules about what you can and can’t send? If you’re allowed to include toys in the care packages, choose things that your kids can enjoy together with the other campers, like Frisbees and playing cards, instead of toys that only they can enjoy themselves. For our son’s first sleepaway camp, my spouse and I sent several decks of playing cards with the first care package. The kids ended up playing cards with the camp counselors until late at night.

When you finally arrive at camp for the drop-off, do yourself – and your kids – the favor and leave once they’re settled in. Bring them to their cabin, help them unpack if necessary, and then extract yourself as quickly as possible. Your kids are eager to meet all the other kids, and there’s nothing as embarrassing as a parent who lingers for what appears to be no good reason. Let them start bonding to and connecting with their counselors and the other kids.

Don’t Worry - They’re Going To Be Fine Once you’re back in the car, take a deep breath, and then head home. Your kids are going to be fine and so will you. Trust me. CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES

How to Help a Mom on Bed Rest By Sarah Lyons Bed rest may sound nice to a busy mom. Who doesn’t dream of being told to lay around and watch TV and read all day? The answer will usually be a mom who actually has to be on bedrest. The novelty wears off very quickly and the reality of the struggle hits hard. When mom is on bed rest, families have to ask for help taking care of her responsibilities. I spent 5 weeks on bed rest before the birth of our triplets. It was an emotionally exhausting and humbling experience. If you would like to help a mom on bed rest, here are some ideas. Listen -There are many reasons, but most moms are put on bed rest because they are going into preterm labor. This causes a lot of stress and anxiety. A long talk can be very therapeutic. When you visit, listen attentively and offer your support. A short email or text shows you care while leaving it in her hands to respond when it’s most convenient. Help with the older kids - During bed rest, mom may feel like she is letting down her older kids because she can not be her normal, active self. Show support by offering to pick up the kids, even if it’s just for a couple hours. Driving the kids to school or activities is also a big help. Keeping the kids in their regularly scheduled activities, helps lessen the anxiety they feel with the changes at home. Stop by the store - Offer to pick up a few things the family needs if you will be out running errands. Many grocery stores now offer drive through pick up. Have the family order and pay for groceries online, then pick them up and deliver them. Provide a meal - Providing meals while mom is on bed rest is a huge help. The family, including mom, need to eat three meals a day. Bring easy to heat up casseroles and freezer meals or stock the pantry with quick fix meals and snacks. Also consider simple to prepare food for lunch and breakfast. Help around the house - It is often difficult for mom to know what would be helpful when asked. Sweep the floor, fold loads of laundry, vacuum, do dishes.. Even a little bit of tidying up can make a big difference. Consider hiring a cleaning service for the family until mom is back on her feet. When a mother is on bed rest she can feel overwhelmed with the things she is missing including time with her spouse and other children, her work, and normal daily responsibilities. By assisting with the basic needs of the family like cooking, cleaning, and errands, you will be a huge help to a mom on bed rest. Sarah Lyons spent five weeks on bed rest during her triplet pregnancy. She feels that even though it was a difficult time, it was worth it to let the babies continue to grow before their birth six weeks premature. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play
