A RENEWED SPIRIT

Now that Springtime has arrived in full bloom, we can start enjoying a renewal to enjoy all things outdoors. For some of us, it means donning your baseball cap and hopping the subway to our favorite stadium in the Bronx to catch the Bombers. For others it’s taking the #7 to CitiField in Queens to cheer on the Amazin’ Mets for another season of highs and lows. Either way (or both), it’s a time to enjoy records broken, stolen bases, and catching a fly ball. We’re still hoping for a World Series with these champs!

As you know, at New York Lifestyles  we share the voices of those who combine their wisdom, lessons, and life experiences with the hope that their journeys will make you change. In short, it’s what this issue is all about. It’s about living well and living long. Even capturing those special moments, too. We introduce you to two incredibly talented leaders in their field.

First, Dr. Naeemah Ruffin who is also known as The Face Fitness Doctor. Her journey into face fitness started when she noticed how her face had aged. While she realized Botox and injectables were the answer for some—she longed for a solution that worked with her body. This began her search for a natural solution to a more youthful appearance. So instead, she started a facial exercise routine. The results were so good, she fine-tuned her Face Enhancing Fitness Program and started working with clients—and created her company, Bellantz Skincare.

Next, meet motivational artist, Billy Alsbrooks, who shines the light for millions of people across the world. The profound advice of one man inspires them every single day to be the best version of themselves. His YouTube following is phenomenal with powerful messages on ways to reach success. Billy reaches all—including celebrities, athletes, entrepreneurs who are serious about success. His book Blessed and Unstoppable: Your Blueprint for Success is must-read.

There we have it! Another issue of incredible interviews, new restaurants, getaways to escape near and far, and arts & entertainment. I hope you find this April issue informative and entertaining.

Wishing you a wonderful Spring,

See you next issue…

MEET THE FACE FITNESS DOCTOR

We know that getting blood flowing through regular exercise is good for our bodies. But have you ever heard of doing a workout for your face? It’s an idea that has gained recognition among people looking to ward off—even reverse—those stubborn crow’s feet, sagging cheeks, double chins, and the list goes on.

“If your body can look fit, so can your face,” says Dr. Naeemah Ruffin, 52, former assistant clinical professor at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and founder of Bellantz. Facial fitness is meant to tone and tighten your face naturally, without invasive methods. That sounds far-fetched—except there is genuine science behind facial fitness, which has existed longer than you may think. Facialists have long been using tools and techniques in combination with skincare products to help the face appear firmer and more sculpted.

Did you know that there are over fifty facial and neck muscles? It’s true. When Dr. Ruffin collaborates with her clients, they can focus on a particular area of their face or exercise the entire face from the forehead to the bottom of the neck. The face exercises target horizontal forehead lines, the lines between the eyebrows, nasolabial folds, flattened cheeks, the jawline, marionette lines around the lips, facial asymmetry, and double chins.

She collaborates with her clients one-on-one, and group classes can also be arranged. Generally, clients sign up for a 6, 12, or 20-week program depending upon the facial target areas. One of the outcomes of this program is that people learn more about their faces which can provide balance and comprehensiveness to a self-care regimen.

You don’t have to break a sweat. Following Dr. Ruffin’s program takes less than 15 minutes per day. To begin, she suggests you start practicing six to seven times per week, and then once you have achieved your desired results, four to five times per week for maintenance. A good practice is to do it in the morning and at night. In less than six weeks, her clients notice an improved difference.

Naeemah Ruffin’s career began as a CPA at Ernst & Young, followed by 11 years at AMEX. Although she was grateful for her business and management experience, she did not feel this was her life’s purpose. So, after a medical mission trip to Africa, she left her corporate career at age 37 to pursue a career in medicine and public health.

She completed a dual DPM/MPH program at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. In addition, she completed her surgical residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and later completed a podiatric mini-fellowship in dermatology and pathology.

A REVEALING LOOK

Her journey into face fitness started when she looked in the mirror and noticed how her face had aged. Her cheeks were sagging, her upper eyelids were drooping, and she had creases between her nose and cheeks. While she realized that Botox and injectables were the answer for some—she longed for a solution that worked with her body. This began her search for a natural solution to a more youthful appearance. So instead, she started a facial exercise routine. The results were so good, she fine-tuned her Face Enhancing Fitness Program and started working with clients. She explains that the facial muscles are the only ones in the body directly attached to the skin. If you exercise the muscle and it gets toned, the skin does, too.

Most recently, Dr. Ruffin launched Bellantz Clinical Skincare, an Age-defying line based on natural plant extracts. A breast cancer survivor, she recognizes the importance of what you put on and in your body. Her mission is to help people look like the best version of themselves—naturally.

We met with Dr. Naeemah Ruffin to learn more about this fascinating subject.

14 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2023

Why does skin age?

The skin ages due to a cumulative and complex mixture of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The skin contains multiple layers,  and as we age, each layer undergoes specific changes highlighting what our skin needs to remain vibrant and youthful. For example, the uppermost layer of the skin acts as a barrier to the environment and maintains optimal hydration levels. As we age, we retain less moisture resulting in dehydrated skin. Therefore, replenishing hydration levels is essential.

The deeper skin layer contains primarily connective tissue such as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Collagen and elastin fibers give the skin strength and elasticity, while hyaluronic acid keeps the skin plump. Excessive sun exposure causes oxidative damage and inflammation, destroying collagen and elastin and causing wrinkles. Therefore, reducing skin inflammation is vital.

Fat, muscle, and bone form the framework of the skin and provide structure to the face by helping to maintain a firm facial shape and contour. As we age, we lose fat and muscle mass, and our facial bones resorb, resulting in the loss of firmness and loose skin. Exercising the facial muscles improves muscle tone and firms the skin.

As you can see, skin aging occurs at many levels. Therefore, your skin care regimen should target these layers with effective skincare, face exercise, and a healthy diet and lifestyle to achieve a smooth, blemish-free, and luminous complexion.

What is the best diet for healthy skin?

Eating a plant-based, minimally processed diet low in sugar is one of the best ways to maintain healthy skin. This diet is rich in antioxidants to protect against UV radiation-induced skin damage, reduces inflammation, and protects your skin from premature aging. Several important antioxidants are vitamins A, C, and E, carotenoids, NAC, ferulic acid, selenium, proanthocyanins, CoQ10, green tea, pycnogenol, alpha lipoic acid, omega 3- and -6 essential fatty acids, and polyphenols. Many of these antioxidants are found in a Mediterranean diet. Also, research shows that a diet high in sugar or eating food cooked using high heat leads to the formation of advanced glycosylation end products (AGEs), which can damage skin collagen and elastin.

How often should you do a facial workout?

All muscles in the body need to be worked out regularly, whether it’s your face or body. When establishing the practice of face exercise, I recommend at least 6 days per week. This helps to build muscle memory and create strong habits.

Is facial massage and exercise the same?

Facial massage and exercise are quite different. Facial massage is excellent for releasing tension in the facial muscles. Holding tension in facial muscles can cause individuals to hold the muscles in a way that can make a face appear aged. For example, consistently frowning can result in lines between the brows. Constant raising of the brows can also result in horizontal lines across the forehead, and continuous clenching of the jaw can result in a hardened appearance.

Exercising the facial muscles involves contracting the muscle to its maximum length leading to improved muscle tone, increased muscle volume, and blood flow to the face. It restores a youthful shape of the face and produces agedefying results. These benefits have the effect of smoothing wrinkles and creases and lifting and tightening areas of the skin due to loss of fat volume and decreased muscle tone over time.

What does wellness mean to you?

Wellness is living in a state where my spirit, mind, and body are in harmony. First, I strive to maintain order and balance in my life by ensuring that I am in the right relationship with God. Second, I ensure that my mind is worry-free: I focus on pure, lovely, and noble things to bring it peace. Lastly, I nurture and take care of my Body with proper sleep, a whole-foods diet, and exercise, including taking my favorite ballet classes twice weekly.

What is the most notable change you have seen in the skincare industry?

I have noticed the push for companies to “clean up” their product ingredient list. Some are moving towards cleaner products, including removing harmful ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, and others linked to cancer and other illnesses. I have also noticed that while facelifts and other cosmetic procedures became popular over the last few decades, current trends show more women are deciding to move toward non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments such as micro-needling, plateletrich plasma, laser, and radiofrequency. However, even these nonsurgical procedures have risks and can take many months to see desired results. As a result, natural facial rejuvenation, consisting of non-surgical and non-injectable methods, has become increasingly popular over the last several years.

Tell us more about your Bellantz Clinical Skincare products. Will you be adding more products this year?

My most outstanding wellness achievement has been starting my own natural and organic skincare line. I have been a skincare enthusiast since I was nine when my mom bought me my first set of skincare. As a breast cancer survivor, I am very particular about what I put on my skin. So, after struggling for years to find skincare products that I could trust and that are both clean and effective, I decided to launch my skincare line. All Bellantz Clinical Skincare products are made with scientifically proven natural and organic plant extracts that are ethically and sustainably sourced from around the world.

They deliver clinical results by targeting and supporting multiple layers of the skin, which restores skin to a youthful, radiant, smooth, hydrated, and nourished appearance. The ingredients include plant-based stem cells, peptides, fruit extracts, antioxidants, brighteners, and natural hydrators and are manufactured in small batches to enable product freshness and potency.

Recently, I’ve added products that target dark spots and an uneven skin tone. I have always struggled with these skin challenges, and wanted to create products with the most potent ingredients that address these issues. I added a Purifying Clay Mask with Gotu Kola, Black Seed, Caffeine, an Azelaic Radiance Serum with Kojic Acid and Niacinamide (vitamin B3), and a Niacinamide Radiance Crème with peptides and Bisobolol. Also, the Murumuru Nourishing Eye Crème targets the lack of vitality around the eye area.

What is your favorite facial-care routine?

My facials include both working the facial muscles and pampering my skin. First, I exercise my face with one of my favorite routines that focuses on specific areas of my face that need toning and tightening. Then I use a facial steamer to relax my face and open my pores to take in my pore-refining and brightening treatment masks. Next, I use my LED light therapy device with my Kombucha Restoring Serum, followed by my Plant Stem Cell Creme and Revitalizing Facial Oil. Finally, I cap off my treatment with gentle upward strokes using my jade roller. As a result, my skin feels rejuvenated and looks very fit. I set aside time at least 2-3 times monthly to refresh and rejuvenate with this self-care routine, and I encourage my clients to do the same.

Dr. Ruffin believes Bellantz is for everybody and every skin type. Think of it as cherishing and honoring your body and soul. Bellantz Face Enhancing Fitness and Bellantz Clinical Skincare work in synergy for the most beneficial results.

MOTIVATIONAL ARTIST BILLY ALSBROOKS

4 SUCCESS TIPS THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Did you hear what he said? Not just what he said, but how he said it? It’s been decades since someone’s voice has resonated with such profound earth-shaking power. When I first listened to a Billy Alsbrooks YouTube video, I struggled with frustration to find an accurate label to place on him. Is this some new form of rap? Poetry? Motivation? Spoken word? Ministry? What is it?

I’m still not quite sure what it is, but one thing is for sure, it moves me. His powerful intense audio canvasses seem to embody all these emotional stirring elements into one cohesive new genre. Seamlessly, each unique message flows from one form to the other, penetrating the spirit down to the very core, touching one in places that I didn’t even know could be touched. He literally set my ears, my mind, and my soul on fire!

The work, no matter which one I choose to play on his channel, challenges me and every other listener to become the best version of ourselves. He speaks from a different place that resonates deeply on all levels. When I listen to Billy, I feel like I can run through walls, conquer my goals, and achieve anything! I found myself constantly rewinding his messages over and over again, so that I could digest every single word he said.

Now there’s been motivational speakers since the beginning of time, but this guy is undeniably different. He’s a motivational artist. If Picasso were a motivational speaker, he’d be Billy.

His masterful way of combining so many different elements into his craft, sets him worlds apart from all others. He and his genius truly stand alone. In today’s saturated world of imitation, what he has done with his poetic alchemy is original, thought provoking, and world changing. On his motivational songs, there are no fillers. He doesn’t just say something to say it. Every word is packed with emotional dynamite. You can almost hear the chains falling off the listener as he ushers in massive breakthroughs. It’s not just what he says, it’s how he says it. He can take the most common quote and make it sound like Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” His distinct voice has a set of hands that hold you from the inside.

Putting his spiritual wisdom into action will allow you to finally experience the unequivocal freedom and fullness that only comes from being the best version of yourself.

We asked Billy to share some quick success tips from his book that will change your life.

Create A Vision For Your Life

Vision is the genesis of all greatness. The ancient scriptures tell us that “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18). This applies to all areas of life. Whether in business, marriage, finances, or your own health, you must decide the most desired outcome and then create in your mind the vision for it.

The starting point for personal transformation is developing a crystal clear, 4k, high-definition mental blueprint with the exact specifications for how you want your life to look. Your imagination is the womb that will eventually give birth to your future. Wherever you don’t have a clear vision in your life, there will be some form of chaos, confusion, and unfulfillment.

20 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2023

Successful people are mental architects that imagine and design their lives from the inside out. Having a strong vision will attract the right people and circumstances required to manifest your goals. Remember this, any goal that you can envision clear enough and sustain long enough, you can make happen. Spend at least a minimum of 5-10 minutes each day with your eyes closed designing a life that excites you, one that has meaning, purpose, a life truly worth living. Then experience mentally, all the emotions and sensations that align with the dream life that you most desire to live. Plant your mind firmly in this new state of existence, until you eventually wake up there.

Detox Emotionally

Everything we do in life is filtered through our emotional state. To go to the highest levels of success, it is critical that we lay a solid emotional foundation to which to build upon. The wise teachings tell us, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.”

All of these inner elements are in some way shape a form of emotional termites that, if left unchecked, will eat us alive. Unforgiveness is the number one thing hindering most people’s success. This dark emotional baggage is an internal ticking time bomb that only has one goal, and that’s to destroy its host.

The hidden within us is always the most dangerous. Successful people constantly scan their emotions looking to eradicate any traces of unforgiveness or any other disempowering energy that interferes with their inner peace and spiritual balance. What inside of you needs to be dealt with?

Take out a sheet of paper and write at the top of it: Who do I need to forgive? Sit quietly for a bit, then write down anyone’s name who arises in your spirit that has hurt, offended, or betrayed you in some way. Writing it down on paper pulls the undealt with into the open where it can be seen and finally addressed. Once your list is made, pick one name at a time and say this out loud, “I forgive you. I choose to let go right now of all the negative emotions and resentments that I have towards you in exchange for my own peace, success, and happiness. Thank you for all the life lessons you’ve taught me, but now I must move forward into my glorious future.” Do this for the next seven days for each name on your list, until all the inner strife and tensions are gone. This isn’t about the one who hurt you, this about liberating yourself. To forgive is to set oneself free. P.S. Have you forgiven yourself? When would now be a good time?

Adopt The Mindset Of The Unstoppable

A disciplined mind, rooted in truth, can do the impossible. The ancient verse says, “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

Champions and high achievers understand that success hinges on having the right mindset. Therefore, from here forward, you must diligently adopt the thinking required to manifest your dreams. This requires consciously observing your thoughts and the paradigms behind them to make sure that your thought activity will produce a life of greatness. Any self-limiting or negative beliefs must be dealt with and replaced with ones that empower you. To become unstoppable, you must conquer the battlefield of the mind. Here are some things that will help you with that.

Every day, meditate and practice stilling your mind, read material that will strengthen your spirit, listen to audio books that will inspire you, and watch motivational messages that will keep you hungry and focused on your goals. Drink a mental gallon of greatness as soon as you wake up in the morning and this will set the tempo for the rest of the day.

Follow Your Passion

The secret to success is building your life around doing the things you love. The great teacher said, “Never be lacking in zeal.” (Romans 12:11)

Excellence is impossible to achieve without a burning desire to achieve it. It’s time to set your life ablaze. Do what excites you, energizes you, do what makes you feel alive! Passion is an inner fire that burns to express to the world what one is. Who are you? Tell the world with your flame. Breakthroughs require immense intensity. Your enthusiasm will allow you to overcome any obstacle and will unlock your power within. When passion is married to singleness of purpose it produces the environment required to produce greatness. Life is too short to waste it on doing things that you don’t connect to. No area of your existence should be lukewarm. Set every aspect of your life on fire by engaging in the things that truly mean something to you.

APRIL 2023 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 21

Take a piece of paper and write across the top: What Sets Me On Fire?

Now write down everything that you’re most passionate about. What types of relationships do you burn for? What type of job or profession ignites your spirit? What types of organizations or world causes do you feel an intense desire to get involved in? Anything that activates your love, peace, joy, excitement, fulfillment etc. captures it down on paper. Build your life around these things. Let fire and a righteous zeal be the center of your existence.

Final Thoughts On Billy’s YouTube Messages

Billy Alsbrooks has started a worldwide revolution. Not a political revolution, but the revolution of all revolutions. This is the revolution of the individual. Each of his messages are mini poetic manifestos instructing the listeners on how to wage war against their own limiting belief systems. Billy Alsbrooks truly is the voice in the flame. Every line is strategically constructed in a way that confronts you mentally and emotionally. It’s as though he holds up a giant mirror with his bold aggressive phrasing. The divine gift this man speaks with burns away the veil and allows one to see their true identity.

When I sat down to write this article, I went to his YouTube channel to learn about him, but in the end, I seemed to learn more about me. In a plastic digital AI world, where most of us have become numb, forgotten how to feel, or at least feel below the surface, this guy will remind you what it feels like to be alive, how to live a life with real meaning, and how to live on your own terms.

Billy Alsbrooks Launches 28-City World Tour

and thought-provoking poems titled Make Way For The Young MAKE WAY FOR THE YOUNG

The small boxes they use to put us in, The petty labels they use to define us.

The ignorant ways they attempt to frame us.

How much should the small, petty, and ignorant really bother us?

We need not ask for permission to be that which we are.

We need not seek approval, to dream the dream we’ve been given. We need not beg for validation to breathe the air that excites us.

The question is: Is our dream bigger than their no?

Would getting their permission, their approval, their validation give us the high that we so desperately seek?

I don’t think so…

I’ve never seen fire asking for permission to burn.

I’ve never heard the sun seeking the sky’s approval to rise.

I’ve never known love to beg for validation to fall.

So, What if like fire, we just burn?

What if like the sun, we just rise?

What if like love, we just fall without any concern over the small minds that might reject us?

What if we got it all wrong?

What if instead, we sought to be misunderstood?

What if we aggressively sought rejection?

What if we intentionally sought the disapproval of those who have never achieved anything?

How much better would this world be?

How much more alive would this planet be?

How much better off would mankind be, if we danced to the music inside of us, instead of the harmony of their contempt?

What if it wasn’t water and oxygen that made life possible, but rather the boldness to shun conformity?

What if the reason the moon seems so lifeless is that its ancestors succumb to the fear of public ridicule?

What if instead of saying we are thirsty for change, we started drinking from the cup that actually produced it?

We can either make excuses or progress, but we can’t do both.

We can either make excuses or progress, but we can’t do both. Make way for the young....

CYNTHIA ROSE

REIMAGINES VINTAGE JEWELS

Layered vintage charm necklaces and stunning stones newly modernized with fresh decorative precious and semi-precious accents are the signatures of New York City jewelry designer Cynthia Rose. She skillfully curates beautiful, fascinating pieces for each client who sees them as a remarkable expression of their individuality.

Cynthia Rose, the New York City designer of vintage artisan jewelry models her signature charm necklaces in her Instagram and crafts them essentially in her image. Chic and sophisticated women love to wear her designs— and, most importantly, layer them—because one is not enough to paraphrase Jaqueline Suzann. “It’s all about balance, size, and texture.”

A PERFECT FIT

Cynthia explains combining old and new in a sexy, playful rhythm that makes for wonderfully enjoyable jewelry, just as perfect a fit with an evening gown or a pair of jeans. “I wear my jewelry every day whether I go out or not. It is just part of who I am. My clients feel the same way. As we go out more, I have no doubt you’ll see more of my jewelry on women around town.”

Cynthia began her fashion journey at FIT and then, as she explains, collaborated “with a select group of immensely talented small independent designers who taught me what it took to evolve in the fashion community. All were smart, savvy women who never let anything get in their way.”

However, she adds it was when she reached 40, after getting and having a family, that she gave in to the longing to do something independently. She finally took the plunge and started her fashion business, putting into play the lessons learned from her savvy colleagues.

A NATURAL PROGRESSION

After twenty years of creating luxe fashion collections for elegant New York women, Cynthia made a critical decision; she decided to downsize and focus exclusively on creating unique jewelry pieces integrating vintage charms and stones. “For me, it was a natural progression. I have always had a deep fascination with jewelry. After all, I have collected pieces that have captured my heart and imagination for 30 years. As a result, I truly love each piece I create. I look at a group of charms or maybe a lovely earring, and I reimagine them. I modernize pieces that may date from centuries ago—even decades—with precious or semi-precious stones to create bespoke pieces that are beautiful, collectible, and timeless.”

Although Cynthia sees allure in many eras, Victorian is her favorite. No matter what period, her approach is one she calls “eclectic,” adding new stones or replacing existing ones, allowing a piece of her sustainable jewelry, she says, “to be simultaneous of the moment and a celebration of the past.”

Collecting jewelry, a passion for three decades, is part of Cynthia’s everyday ritual. Each piece is the object of her devotion, whom she wants to see “adopted into a good, kind, and truly deserving home where the jewelry will be loved and cherished as much as if the pieces were still in my care.”

GLAMOROUS TREASURES

As Iris Apfel says, from her vantage point of 100+ years old, “More is more and less is a bore.” That Cynthia says is her philosophy. It is the essential key to her influence. Her clients have followed her guidance and style inspiration from fashion to jewelry for decades: Beautiful pieces that are whimsical and glamorous, treasures that tease the eye leading it up, down, and around in a never-ending circle of visual delight.

ONLY HEARTS

FOR HELENA STUART IT’S ALL NICE

Based in Manhattan, Only Hearts is Helena Stuart’s baby, her creative outpouring of love. Stuart coined the fashion term “inner/outerwear,” and while it’s now a permanent fixture in the fashion world, it was revolutionary in the late 1970s. Back then, it wasn’t always fashionable to dress in something comfortable, soft to the touch, and incredibly sexy and smart. Times change and today the term inner/outerwear is quite common. At Only Hearts it’s not only appealing to the eye, but nice that it can also work as an entire outfit and is practical, too.

The intimate collections are suitable layering pieces under your most tailored looks. Back when the fashion look was “more is more” and the funkier and louder the better, Stuart was entranced by lingerie that felt good against the skin: soft, feminine and comfortable has always been her motto and inspiration. And for Stuart there’s nothing more luxurious this Spring than a buttery soft fabric.

IMPECCABLE FIT

As a child, Stuart spent time backstage at fashion shows (her mother was a model) and while growing up in Italy fashion was everywhere. It was common to purchase bespoke clothing. To this day, it has influenced Stuart: custom-made clothing with an impeccable fit has always been the driving force for Only Hearts. The brand’s continuous stream of creatively designed lingerie makes it a consumer favorite. Her latest line includes a playful plaid mesh inspired by Vivienne Westwood, as well as toneddown camouflage prints, and even a stained-glass print.

As a graduate of FIT who first worked as an assistant to a sportswear designer, Stuart has remained true to her roots. She always wanted to design and make clothing she couldn’t find anywhere. It wasn’t until Stuart, at Liz Rosenberg’s behest, was persuaded to create a release party for Rod Stewart’s You’re In My Heart at Regine’s that she gained enough confidence to open her concept shop. Stuart also wanted to be sustainable and ethical and takes pride in the fact that the brand has remained loyal to these beliefs since it became a mainstay in New York City in 1979. Only Hearts has two locations in Manhattan and one in LA.

HAVING A DESIGN SENSE

Stuart always follows her desires and design intuition. Some of her most popular items are aptly called Second Skin. Peel out of your Second Skin slip and feel good in various intimates and tops. After all, good fabrics have always been a means of self-expression for Stuart. She trusts her intuitive design sense and, when inspired, goes to Paris for even more inspiration.

There’s nothing more modern than slipping out of your work clothes and relaxing in a delicate camisole that was discreetly hidden under your blouse during the day. In summer, you can wear a long slip as a dress and an organic cotton cardigan—and you’re all set! Stuart is incredibly excited that now, more than ever, Ready-to-Wear clothing is inspired by lingerie.

Today, Stuart is inspired by real women who are fully engaged in life; her ideal model is anyone who wears her clothes! If you notice, on social media, none of the women modeling Only Hearts are retouched (complete with freckles, tattoos, and piercings). This is the face of sexy, confident women for 2023. Stuart’s designs can also be found at Shopbop, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Free People.

SAN DIEGO

CALIFORNIA’S FAVORITE PLAYGROUND

Come for the sun. Stay for the fun! There’s a reason that San Diego often turns up as one of the top five USA vacation destinations that Americans and foreign visitors count as a bucket list desire, for this famed Southern California city indeed does have it all. Let’s start with the sun, as San Diego’s climate is truly outstanding, with little rain, perhaps a bit of fog, but mostly sunny and mild all year round. Mix in its beautiful harbor, pretty beaches, top-notch restaurants, and lively cultural scene for a place that never disappoints travelers.

There are definite must-see stops on any visit to San Diego, beginning with Balboa Park. This 1,200-acre park has a bit of everything, but our favorite place to start is in the gardens. And this being sunny SoCal, you’ll find 130 varieties of roses blooming in January (and most of the rest of the year) in the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden, giant cacti and other succulents in the Kate O. Sessions Cactus Garden, and butterflies galore in the Zoro Garden. Also, be sure to search out the lovely Palm Canyon, with 58 species of palms, and don’t miss the photo op at the Botanical Building and Lily Pond, a truly gorgeous spot.

There are so many museums in the park you may need a few days to see them all, ranging from the San Diego Museum of Art to the Natural History Museum, the Air and Space Museum, Centro Cultural de la Raza, and even the Comic-Con Museum (and many others). The Old Globe Theater and Starlight Bowl are also in Balboa Park, where theater and concerts enthrall and even the famed Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater.

SPECIAL PLACES

Next is Old Town, where the indigenous Kumeyaay had a settlement, which they retreated from when the Spanish (and Mexicans) arrived; Old Town represents those Spanish/Mexican settlements. With many buildings constructed in the early 1800s, it’s a fascinating link to the city’s origins. Plus, some of the best Mexican restaurants you’ll ever try are found here, including Café Coyote, which has been in business for over 30 years and consistently rated as one of San Diego’s best.

Then there are the beaches, from OB (Ocean Beach) to Coronado Island, the home of the famed Hotel del Coronado, a special place to vacation since 1888. Check those out for fun in the sand and on land, too, and don’t miss Black’s Beach if you’re inclined to ride the waves or wander about in your birthday suit, as a section of Black’s is a nude beach. Remember to use sunscreen all over any SD beach!

A classic since 1937 is Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the horse track Bing Crosby co-owned and drew his famous Hollywood pals down the coast in droves to enjoy the spectacle. July marks the season’s opening, and everyone dresses up and struts their stuff until late September when it ends. We love the trackside tables with excellent views, good food, and comfortable seating, and we plan to see the Breeders Cup 2024 here, to be run here November 1-2.

MORE DISCOVERIES

While the San Diego harbor has been part of this place forever—and the reason that the U.S. Navy has made the city one of its fundamental bases—a recent arrival to the waterfront has everyone in town buzzing. That’s the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park along the Embarcadero, the state-of-the-art outdoor concert venue at the water’s edge. The beautiful venue seats up to 10,000 people, with dining catered by Chef Richard Blais, and is now the home of the San Diego Symphony. The shell also hosts music acts from all genres in its long season, lasting from March to September. In addition, you can join a yoga class held at the Shell on select Saturdays.

Stay at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, with its comfortable rooms overlooking the shell, drink and dine at their scenic  Odysea waterfront lounge, then meander down the Embarcadero (the three-mile walking path along the harbor) just a few blocks to the venue. Keep on going, and you’ll end up at Seaport Village, where many waterfront restaurants and shops exist. Or meander to the east right into the famous Gaslamp Quarter, another longtime neighborhood with much to see and do, including Petco Park, the MLB San Diego Padres home.

Be sure to find time to dine at  Lumi, Chef Akira Beck’s Japanese-Peruvian rooftop restaurant, one of the must-try places in the Gaslamp. His fascinating Omakase offerings will delight your senses, and the lively outdoor atmosphere is a delight both during the day and into the evening. And, of course, the weather for rooftop dining in San Diego is fabulous at any time of year.

THE RITZ-CARLTON NOMAD

A STUNNING ADDITION TO NYC’S HOTEL SCENE

Arriving at the new Ritz-Carlton NoMad Hotel entrance on West 28th Street in Manhattan, you may be mystified. What looks like an office building is an elegant hotel, which only takes a moment to discover once you enter the grand, welcoming lobby that’s chockablock with gorgeous floral arrangements.

Opened in July 2022, the Ritz NoMad is already a hotspot, especially for locals who have discovered Nubeluz, the incredible rooftop bar with an Art Deco speakeasy vibe (not an easy thing to pull off) and insane views. Perched atop the 50th floor of this built-from-scratch skyscraper, the club has floor-to-ceiling windows that encompass 270-degree looks south to downtown Manhattan into Brooklyn; west into New Jersey; and east toward the nearby Empire State Building, Queens, and Long Island.

A DINING PLEASURE

It’s a chic, wonderful space helmed by everyone’s favorite philanthropic chef, José Andrés, who offers a variety of delicious “tablas” (food boards) to help soak up the craft cocktails and other libations provided here. It opens at 4 pm and draws a big crowd every night, so if you want to see the spectacular sunset on a clear evening in the Big Apple, we’d suggest reservations.

José Andrés also helms Zaytina, his Mediterranean-style eatery on the ground floor that leans on mezze offerings that are perfect for sharing. And we cannot wait for his new The Bazaar by José Andrés to open in Spring 2024, as that used to be one of the coolest places ever when he opened the original in Los Angeles in 2008.

THE ACCOMMODATIONS

The Ritz-Carlton NoMad’s rooms and suites are incredibly beautiful. With huge windows looking out on fantastic city views, the rooms are spacious (especially by New York City standards, which often encompass a closet-sized room without enough space to open your suitcase), modern, and extremely comfortable. The hotel’s suites are even more impressive, with dining rooms, kitchens, and those same unsurpassed views of Manhattan unfolding in all its grandeur.

We love the NoMad’s Club Level, where the Club Lounge takes the concept of a floor where hotel guests can stop in for breakfast, lunch, and “afternoon delights” (although we’re pretty sure they missed the exact meaning of that saying by only offering food and drinks!), as well as cocktail hour and dessert and cordials, all included in the Club Level room rate. That constant cycle of quality food and drink service makes life much easier for busy travelers, all enjoyed in an expansive room with incredible downtown views.

And the hotel’s spa proves there’s plenty of space for whatever one’s heart desires in New York City; it just takes planning. Walk into the 6,800-square-foot oasis to discover eight treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, and a focus on wellness built into every experience on offer.

FASCINATING SIGHTS

Once back on the street outside the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, the neighborhood is jam-packed with ideal places to visit. Head to the Empire State Building’s revamped observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors with 360-degree views of the city and fascinating historical displays; you can even go at sunrise and watch the city that never sleeps wake up!

Take in a concert or a game at Madison Square Garden’s famed arena, just a few blocks away, or wander over toward the Hudson River and hit the High Line for a stroll, then on into Hudson Yards for some luxurious shopping adventures and a sublime seafood meal at Estiatorio Milos. Whatever you decide to do, the Ritz NoMad is a perfect spot to come home to.

ADVENTURE TRAVEL

A VISIT TO THE MAJESTIC SOUTHERN ALPS

There are luxury lodges, and there is Flockhill Lodge, New Zealand’s new homestead in the Alps of the South Island. Nestled on a working sheep station occupying thirty-six thousand acres in the Craigieburn Valley, I was amid snow-capped peaks, glassy lakes, winding rivers, and dramatic landscapes that have been the focal point of fantastic film sets. However, that is quite different from the good-natured hosts and staff, who set Flockhill Lodge apart from other luxury lodges. I might have arrived as a guest but left as part of the Flockhill family.

The Dalai Lama once called this section of New Zealand “the spiritual center of the universe,” said Lodge manager Andrew Cullen as we cruised along the Great Alpine Highway. “See that over there,” Andrew said, pointing to a hill covered in limestone boulders, which from the road, looked like a flock of sheep. “That’s where the name Flockhill comes from.” A few minutes later, we arrived at the station. The driveway acted as a timeline of the station, from the crumbling 1875 homestead, which was once a backpacker establishment used by local ski fields and hikers in summer, to a construction site erecting the future restaurant and staff village. At the top of the driveway is the present-day building on the station, Flockhill Lodge.

THE LODGE

The four-bedroom homestead, completed in 2019, is a long, thin, barn-style building purposely built by architect Jonathan Coote of the Auckland-based firm Warren and Mahoney to exploit views from every angle. Walk down the narrow hallways to find imposing mountain structures towering over the building, look out onto Lake Pearson and Sugarloaf Mountain from a private bathtub in the bedroom, and witness the low-lying clouds roll in at first light from the lounge room. You can’t help but feel consumed by its serenity.

Made of timber, limestone, and tinted concrete, Flockhill Lodge blends seamlessly into its surroundings. The interior is a delicate balance of rough concrete brutalism and warm chalet timbers, with lush velvet lounges to sink into with a cocktail and statement light fixtures. A cozy den with a vinyl record deck and a hidden wall bar creates a homely atmosphere. There’s a spacious sitting room with books and games, but nothing beats the terrace with a tepid pool, fire pit, and hot spa, primely placed overlooking the best views in the valley. When the sheep stop rustling at night and the valley is silent, the stars blanket the sky, stretching across the pass as far as the eye can see.

TRAVEL

A stay at the lodge includes exclusive access to the homestead and a personal chef and attendant preparing a daily breakfast, lunch, and four-course dinner or BBQ. Yet I had the privilege of dining with Andrew and Sandra Cullen, the gatekeepers of the lodge. We sat down as the sun disappeared behind the imposing mountains, clinked our wine glasses, and swapped life stories. Andrew and Sarah are wellversed in the luxury sector, having worked for Aman and, much to my benefit, previously owned a restaurant. Andrew and Sandra’s culinary skills did not fade. Set down before me was a feast of pork belly bites, roasted vegetables, mussels, salmon sashimi, and for dessert, freshly baked brownies. “We just whipped up a few things we had in the pantry,” they said. While the company felt family-style, the food was of a higher standard, something I’d expect at a five-star restaurant. Yet, here we were, nestled between the mountains, in the valley, amongst the majesty of the Southern Alps.

REFINED & RUGGED

After a restful night’s sleep, I reluctantly peeled myself out of the Merino Dreamwool mattress and alpaca blanket that consumed me throughout the night. Then after a hot spa and breakfast, I met Markos with an adventurous spirit. Andrew drove us to the furthest point you can reach by 4WD. Markos talked. while I struggled to catch my breath, ascending the steep ridge. “People think sheep are stupid, but they’re highly intelligent,” he said. I’ve never met someone who cared about sheep as deeply as Markos. We followed the ridgeline and passed several gates before reaching the Flockhill Boulders. It took me a minute to realize the boulders towering over me were the ones Andrew first pointed out on the drive. “Do you rock climb,” said Markos. “These boulders are well known amongst the rock-climbing community,” he said.

He was right. There seemed to be no end. For miles and miles, boulders scattered across a hill face, overlooking mountain ranges, basins, limestone outcrops, and pastures. Markos showed me the battlefield several feet below the cliff face, where they filmed the great battle scene from The Chronicles of Narnia. We continued down the labyrinth, climbing, jumping, and scraping ourselves boulder after boulder. We faced them all: small ones, round ones, U-shaped ones, and large ones that could rival a semi-trailer. However, it was a battle between admiring the boulders and mesmerizing the panoramic views, looking into the station’s depths, which never seemed to end.

HIKING, BIKING & MORE

Finally, Markos pointed out the station’s land. That’s when I realized the sheer privilege of staying at Flockhill Lodge. The station is yours to explore. Thirty-six thousand acres doesn’t just apply to pastures. The scope of the land is incomprehensible, and to explore every corner would take weeks, if not months. However, Flockhill Lodge has figured out how to combine a refined stay with all the creature comforts of a five-star resort, with a harrowing experience that allows guests to tap into their wild side, donning wet suits and plunging into caves, spending hours hiking trails or reeling in salmon.

The last section of the hike has us shuffling down a steep hill on our bottoms, emerging from tall grasses and boulders to an open-air cave, crowding around us like hands cupping a mug. I noticed a wooden picnic table in the distance and Markos’ better half, Lizette, waiting with a cocktail shaker and light snacks. The sun plunged beneath the rocky sculptures surrounding us, igniting the sky with pink and orange. I asked Lizette and Markos, “do you ever get used to this place?” They replied, “every day is something different. That’s life at Flockhill Station, and we’re fortunate to live here.”

Before it got too dark, we packed the picnic into the 4WD. We cruised along a dirt road, passing a flock of sheep. It was a 10-minute drive back to Flockhill Lodge. We filled the minutes with laughter and stories like we had known each other for years. Andrew was standing at the front door when we arrived at the lodge. “Welcome home,” he said. A statement I’d never truly felt until I stayed at Flockhill Lodge.

REACHING FOR THE STARS

2 GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN ESCAPES

If you were to ask what the most visited national park in the United States is, most would forget The Great Smoky Mountains. But with its annual 14 million visitors and location within driving distance of 60 percent of the U.S. population, it gets more visitors yearly than Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon combined.

PIGEON FORGE

Dollywood

Nestled near the Great Smoky Mountains is a place called Pigeon Forge, which caters primarily to country music and Southern culture fans featuring gift shops, theme parks, musical theaters, and dinner shows like Hatfield & McCoy. Even though many country singers such as Blake Sheldon have homes in the area, in terms of stars, there’s no one bigger than Dolly Parton, not just for her illustrious music career but for her decades of philanthropy work and scholarships through her Dollywood Foundation.

Spanning 160 acres, Dollywood is the top tourist attraction in Pigeon Forge and all of Tennessee. Having been to theme parks around the country, including Walt Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando, I can attest there’s something unique about Dollywood with its Southern charm and hospitality. So, of course, I expected it to have live shows featuring an array of country music acts. Still, I didn’t expect to find the spectacular Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, a 30,000-square-foot aviary housing the country’s most extensive array of bald eagles and other birds of prey.

Equally impressive is Dolly’s Home-on-Wheels, Parton’s outfitted tour bus, where you can view the brass fixtures and cherry-wood cabinetry. Also on display is the entertainment legend’s closet with show outfits (behind plexiglass), her vanity table, and her bedroom with three clocks—set to Los Angeles, Nashville, and Dollywood time.

For thrill-seekers, Dollywood boasts some of the country’s most daring and innovative roller coasters. I managed to ride eight of them back-to-back. Although not before dinner. Hey, I’m not  that crazy. The best part is that, unlike its amusement park counterparts in Orlando, where some of the most popular rides feature an hour or longer wait, there are virtually no lines to most of the rides at Dollywood. The longest queue was 10 minutes.

GATLINBURG

Anakeesta

Resting on the border of the national park is Gatlinburg, a famous mountain resort city in eastern Tennessee, which also happens to be the number one trending destination in the U.S. During the peak season, it sees 13 million visitors. Gatlinburg’s most visited attraction is Anakeesta—a multigenerational adventure park on a mountaintop. To access it, guests can ride to the summit on a Chondola or ski lift from downtown Gatlinburg (where I saw a black bear on the side of the mountain) or take the Ridge Rambler truck.

An all-day access ticket allows you to walk the country’s longest Treetop canopy walk, climb to the top of the AnaVista Tower for 360-degree views of the surrounding Smoky Mountains, or enjoy the TreeVenture and BearVenture challenge courses. Then, to get your adrenaline going, there’s the Rail Runner Mountain Chaser—a coaster through the woods, or try the award-winning, dueling zipline course with rappelling. Afterward, enjoy a hot chocolate by the fire pit with breathtaking views and live music. Or head to the Vista Gardens for an interactive, sensory botanical garden with over 3,000 flowers, plants, and whimsical art installations.

Last fall, Astra Lumina opened at Anakeesta. This night-time, immersive experience is the 15th in the Lumina Enchanted Walk series and the first in the United States. Stargazers of all ages can explore a celestial pathway of illuminating light, stardust rays, cosmic song, astral projections, and smoke effects as they venture through the mountain forest.

Anakeesta is open from March to mid-September. Info: anakeesta.com

I spun on the Lightning Rod, a 1950s-era hot rod that races down a 165-foot drop and launches riders along its 3,800-foot track to a top speed of 73 mph. Don’t miss The Wild Eagle, the first of its kind in the country, with seats on either side of an eagle’s wingspan, so there’s nothing but air above and below the rider as it soars twenty-one stories above the ground. But, not resting on its laurels, Dollywood is debuting a $25 million roller coaster this Spring. Big Bear Mountain will be the park’s longest coaster with a 3,990-foot track and features onboard audio and music as it circles Wildwood Grove.

During 2023, guests can celebrate the 50th anniversary of Parton’s hit song in the I Will Always Love You Celebration, which takes place from March 11th – April 8th, kicking off the season with an event to commemorate the art of songwriting. This will be followed by Dollywood’s Flower & Food Festival from April 21st to June 11th, with Mosaic culture flower displays and sculptures.

Whether your interest lies in the stars—in light or human form, family entertainment, the great outdoors, or home-spun Southern hospitality, you’re spoilt for choice in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, the two cities on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Info: dollywood.com

DELRAY BEACH

SOAK UP THE RAYS IN THIS POPULAR BEACH TOWN

As New Yorkers, we love that we can walk to everything we want within our city. But what if you could find that same kind of convenience in a Florida beach town? A place where no rental car is needed to go from the sea to the resort and then on to dinner and nightlife. Downtown Delray Beach offers all this and more. And if you don’t want to walk or even bike, an on-demand free electric car service can take you throughout the downtown core area.

Atlantic Avenue, Downtown Delray Beach’s main drag, runs from I-95 to the Atlantic Ocean and the town’s beautiful two-mile-long beach. The beach town is protected: The city’s height limits are no higher than three stories on East Atlantic Avenue, and throughout Downtown, the height restriction is 54 feet. It also boasts an Intracoastal Waterway and draw bridge.

Once off the beach, Downtown Delray Beach continues to shine. It is home to more than 120 restaurants, cafes, and bars. Choose your favorite cuisine, and you’re most likely able to find it here. (See our sidebar for some of our favorites.) And if you seek live music, the open-air venues here—such as Johnnie Brown’s and Tin Roof—provide live bands playing everything rock to Motown.

The area has six museums, including the Cornell Art Museum, housed in the restored Delray Elementary School from 1913—more than 30 art galleries, working artist studios, and 40 street art murals. Don’t forget the more than 75 public art installations giving this town a creative vibe. Downtown Delray Beach boasts more than 125 shops, with 96 percent of those as small independent businesses. The 18-hole Delray Beach Public Golf Course and Delray Beach Tennis Center, home to both tennis and pickleball courts, provide opportunities to be active during your visit.

TRAVEL

WHERE TO STAY

Downtown Delray Beach offers a choice of 15 resorts, inns, and hotels. Make The Seagate Hotel & Spa your ideal home base. It has almost three properties in one. On-site at the 154room resort is a full-service spa for massages, a fitness center, and an outdoor pool set in a relaxing deck. It is also where you’ll find the  Atlantic Grille for al fresco or indoor dining for brunch, Happy Hour, or dinner. On select nights, you can pair the restaurant’s seafood, steak, pasta, and more menu with live music.  Etc. Café is an ideal spot for a quick graband-go for breakfast or lunch.

Complimentary transportation within a five-mile radius of the hotel includes the resort’s nearby private oceanfront Beach Club. In addition to providing chairs and umbrellas on the beach for guests, the Beach Club also has its swimming pool. Set in a 1950s single-family home, it offers casual dining and an outdoor patio for lunch and dinner with a view. Also, part of the resort’s amenities is access to The Seagate Country Club, just a short drive away via complimentary hotel transfers. Here, you can book a round of golf on the 18hole course, hit balls on the driving range, or practice your putting. The Country Club also has tennis and pickleball courts. Info: seagatedelray.com.

Another option within walking distance of all Downtown Delray Beach offers is The Ray Hotel Delray Beach, Curio Collection by Hilton set within the Pineapple Grove Arts District. The 141-room property opened its doors in 2021 and plays off its location with “modern tropical architecture” with large-scale sculptures, art installations, living walls, and rooftop gardens. Guest rooms also feature a modern vibe.

Head for the rooftop pool deck with its restaurant and bar with trellis-filled lounge areas for lazy days in the sun or get a complimentary short ride to the beach. Set aside at least two nights for dining at the hotel. Ember Grill offers excellent choices in American fare and more. Here Michelin Star Chef Akira Back brings his modern Japanese cuisine to the hotel. Info: therayhotel.com.

THE SHERRY-NETHERLAND

LIVING LARGE ON FIFTH AVENUE

“Take me to the Sherry” could be heard for nearly a century among the movers and shakers of society who have turned the pages of history. Located in the heart of Manhattan, the apartment-hotel is a five-star property. When the 38-story Sherry-Netherland opened, it was the tallest apartment-hotel in New York City, located directly across from the entrance to Central Park on Fifth Avenue and 59th Street.

Owning a prime residence at the Sherry-Netherland is not only a dream but possible to live amid these well-manicured walls. Each luxury residence offers the exceptional and personalized service you would expect from an award-winning property in New York City for its old-world charm.

THE BEGINNING

It was Louis Sherry and Lucius Boomer who developed the Sherry-Netherland. Sherry, an ice cream magnate, caterer, and confectioner, had many ties to New York and provided the city’s elite society from 1881 to 1919 with his confections, beautifully packed in lavender boxes and tins.

It wasn’t long before Sherry purchased the famed New Netherlands Hotel, only to demolish it to build his masterpiece skyscraper. Realizing that placing his name on the building would not signify the luxury and importance of his new hotel, he decided on the name Sherry-Netherland. The New York City firm of Schulze & Weaver designed The Sherry-Netherland in a neo-Romanesque and Renaissance style. At the time, the building was considered the world’s tallest and the first in New York City with a steel frame. It was completed in 1927 and featured travertine marble on the base with elaborate touches, including the whimsical griffins with hanging lanterns that guard the exterior.

48 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2023 REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME

The most elegant feature, however, is the elaborate mural on the vaulted lobby ceiling by Joseph Aruta. Based on Raphael’s frescoes in the Vatican Palace, it is important to note that when he painted the ceiling, murals were very fashionable and often included in commercial spaces. Some of the greatest buildings of that era—the Empire State Building, Radio City Musical Hall, the Chrysler Building—all boast fantastic murals. In 2014, the lobby mural was refurbished to reflect its original splendor. Sherry-Netherland’s highly decorated elevators are modeled after those from the Vanderbilt Mansion. In addition, there are classical friezes rescued from the Vanderbilt mansion one block south where Bergdorf Goodman now stands, ornate mirrors, and crystal chandeliers.

ENTER RESIDENCE #2307

You are invited to visit this super special triple mint, tastefully renovated one-bedroom, one- and one-halfbath apartment now available at the Sherry-Netherland. The over one thousand square foot co-op is well-priced with over $1,000,000 reduction. This is a “must-see.”

In addition to the size of this suite, which is extremely generous, it is the New York skyline views that really set it apart. It offers a very classically elegant and sophisticated ambience with original architectural details like the decorative fireplace in the living room. It feels very glamorous, but at the same time, very comfortable. The classic styling and its art deco touches make for a very authentic sense of place.

The new renovations in the apartment incorporate the building’s historical elements, such as coffered ceilings, intricate wood parquet floors, custom lighting, closets galore, and a distinctive barrel-vaulted entrance foyer. In addition, the apartment features windowed marble baths, a decorative fireplace, and a washer/dryer.

THE AMENITIES

Enjoy all the services and conveniences of a 5-star hotel in one of New York’s premiere landmarks. Many extras begin with twice-daily housekeeping with an evening turn-down service, a monthly window cleaning service, concierge services, a 24-hour attendant, and valet parking. Also included are a fitness center, a beauty salon and barbershop, and white-glove room service from  Harry Cipriani restaurant; if you prefer to dine in person, residents receive a 20-person discount. Pets are allowed with board approval. Asking price: $1,775,000.

MINDIE’S MUSINGS

OVERCOMING INSECURITIES

uthor and motivational speaker Mindie Barnett answers your questions about life, navigating these stressful and uncertain times, while steering you down a more straightforward path.

We welcome your questions and invite you to reach out to Mindie at mindiesmusings1@gmail.com.

Dear Mindie,

I turn to chocolate and junk food to protect myself from insecurities. Unfortunately, I then end up feeling worse about myself after eating. How do I break this habit?

Sincerely,

Dear Sweet & Salty,

Don’t beat yourself up. We all have shortcomings we turn to cope and soothe ourselves. Some of us, unfortunately, select maladaptive mechanisms to self-medicate. This can look like many things: drugs and alcohol, sex, shopping, cheating on our partners, binge eating/ starvation, or eating junk food, to name a few. But, of course, indulging in some chocolate occasionally when you feel low is not the biggest crime you can commit. I appreciate the aftermath leaves you feeling less than others; however, as with almost everything in life - small doses are best.

Scientifically, chocolate does make us happy. The ingredients release serotonin, which boosts our mood, which is why chocolate is typically the go-to food for comfort. In addition, chocolate contains anandamide, a neurotransmitter whose name comes from Sanskrit “ananda,” meaning joy and delight. Anandamides stimulate the brain in a similar way that cannabis does. So, it’s perfectly normal to gravitate toward chocolate to feel good and comfortable.

The bigger question, the issue, is why you feel insecure. We all have insecurities and elements of ourselves we wish we could change or are not confident about. That’s perfectly normal. How we manage such feelings is where the road can become a slippery slope of pitfalls. Why not explore your insecurities, one at a time, and create an evidence chart to back up why you feel you lack in these areas of your life or about yourself? Then create an opposite list of reasons to contest your feelings. Then pen another list of healthy alternatives to eating chocolate that brings you joy and comfort. That may look like listening to a good podcast, indulging in a mindless show on Netflix, cuddling with a pet, talking to a good friend, or listening to some of your favorite music while doing an activity you love. Make that your go-to routine when you need self-soothing instead of turning to chocolate. your feelings of insecurity and anxiety at bay.

Another way to ensure you adhere to this healthier form of coping is to incorporate a piece of the ritual daily. For instance, if you choose to assume vegetating in front of the TV and watching Netflix, try and allow yourself 30 minutes of such leisure a day.

Another way to ensure you adhere to this healthier form of coping is to incorporate a piece of the ritual daily. For instance, if you choose to assume vegetating in front of the TV and watching Netflix, try and allow yourself 30 minutes of such leisure a day. That could be before bed, after a long day at work, or after dinner as a treat. Science shows that implementing an act consistently will help solidify a habit faster. In addition, you’ll proactively keep your feelings of insecurity and anxiety at bay.

The routine will become a form of self-preservation instead of only selfsurvival. The more you keep at it, the faster the pattern will be set in stone, and your desire for chocolate as a coping mechanism will melt away.

Love,  Mindie

JOURNEY EXPERIENCE NYC

IMMERSIVE DINING IN THE FLATIRON DISTRICT

Enter  Journey Experience NYC and you will immediately feel like you’re in an elegant and sophisticated dining room. Go to the back and side rooms, and you will find unique immersive experiences that are $175 per person—but worth every penny.

The  Journey 360  room is fascinating. Picture a long communal table with classic white linens and fivecourse menus neatly tucked into the napkin with each guest’s name projected onto their seating spot! In addition, there are projections on the walls around you that make you feel as if you are dining in a zeppelin tethered to the Empire State Building and other famous landmarks around the world. Some of the different experiences within this unique eatery include a dark back lounge with fantastic art and furniture from around the world, including a “bottomless” table with endless swirls of lightbulbs under the glass.

The two masterminds behind  Journey Experience NYC are Broadway producer Marc Routh, a co-owner of the Tony Award-winning Broadway supper club  54 Below, and noted restauranteur Alex Vanderbilt. Both are proud of the high praise they are getting for their groundbreaking project. Vanderbilt told New York Lifestyles, “Journey 360  is more multimedia and technology-based, so it feels extremely intriguing when you sit at the table with your name emblazoned on the seat. Journey Odyssey is more theatrical and has that life-actor integration that makes the show feel more Broadway and less technology.”

However, the star in both experiences is the food, the quality, and the creativity of the dishes. Chef Edward Hong has created each dish to support the location and narrative while surprising and delighting the guests through traditional culinary sensations of taste, smell, and visuals. The cuisine is a real mix of styles and includes a lot of raw fish. Vanderbilt calls it “new American cuisine with a Korean influence. We are so proud of our care in preparing and sourcing farm-totable ingredients, to the prime choice of fish, meat, and other proteins.” In addition, sitting at either the front or back-room bars provides a la carte off an elevated bar menu—with no reservations required.

60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2023 FOOD & DRINK

AN “EPIC” EXPERIENCE

If you want standard dining without immersive experiences, book an a la carte dinner in the front room, Journey Epic Café. The go-to dishes we tried and have been obsessed with ever since included the appetizers: the  Wagyu Sliders  which are a meal in themselves—you get three giant dry-aged sliders topped with artisanal melted cheddar. Finally, we teamed those burgers with the  Disco Fries,  hearty sticks of potatoes boiled, fried, and then baked with melted Gouda and herbs.

When it came time for the entrees, we decided to go big or go home and share a large steak! The dry-aged Tomahawk Steak is an impressive 40 ounces, including the extra-large bone, and can feed three or four people! It is sided with homemade chimichurri sauce, roasted veggies including multicolored carrots, and super buttery mashed potatoes, the perfect medium-to-firm consistency!

For dessert, we split the Raspberry Mousse and Baba Au Rhum, which are done halfway between “deconstructed” and “classic” styles. The  Raspberry Mousse features a unique consistency, almost like cookie crumbs have been mixed in, while the Baba Au Rhum is served warm, with homemade custard in both the center and on top.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Each night has different immersive experiences, and there will be more choices as time goes on—check the Journey Experience NYC website for the themes available the night you want to book.

If you want simple a la carte dining in the  Journey Epic Café  but still want to experience the projections, you can visit the bars and ask the friendly bartenders to show you some visuals.

The most popular immersive journey is Journey Odyssey. It features Broadway performers Cady Huffman and Judy Kate doing vignettes about visiting each country representing the five courses. The  Journey 360 option gives you the experience of dining in the center of a volcano. Amazingly, dry ice is placed on your table, so diners are engulfed in smoke when your food comes out. (Now, that’s what we would call “theatrical gastronomy” at its most extreme!)

Specializing in steaks, grills, and traditional American food,  Benny John’s Bar & Grill is the ideal destination for a business power lunch, pre-theater dinner, weekend brunch, or a group outing with family and friends.

Chef Bulmaro Rogue, the veteran grill man from Peter Luger, runs the kitchen, creating classic, tasty dishes using the finest and locally sourced ingredients from some of the finest purveyors.

The restaurant represents a relaxed upscale environment enhanced with art from Novo Arts by Marlaina Deppe. With indoor and outdoor dining options, guests can sit at a table, admire the décor, and crisp white table linens associated with a classic dining experience. The bar is a work of art—hard oak wood meets the marble top, and a seat close to the wine collection on display and the work of the mixologist crafting cocktail magic. Early evening diners can enjoy a happy hour, and in addition, there is a small bites menu available.

The lunch and dinner menus offer well-executed, traditional choices with prixfixe lunch and early dinner options that fill the appetite without emptying the wallet. Some signature dishes include Lobster Risotto, The Benny John’s burger, and the Serious NY Veal Chop (and yes, it is a serious veal chop).

GOOD TIMES OF ALL SORTS

ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET

Not yet rated

Fans of Judy Blume’s classic coming-of-age novel will love this new adaptation of the 50-year-old classic. Abby Ryder Fortson is Margaret, who at age 11 cannot stand her new life in suburbia, missing the excitement of New York City. Her mom (Rachel McAdams) and grandmother (Kathy Bates) aren’t quite sure they love New Jersey either, which leads all three generations to question their new lives in this classic comedy-drama.

PAINT

PG-13

Take one look at Owen Wilson with a big, permed Afro while holding a paintbrush and you’ll quickly realize that he’s doing a comic version of the life of Bob Ross, the painter who made a career of teaching public television viewers how to create “masterpieces” in their own living rooms. This fanciful film calls its leading character Carl Nargle and much of it is completely fictional, as the painter encounters a rival for the title of top TV painting instructor. Craziness ensues, with a cast rounded out with Stephen Root, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ciara Renee.

RENFIELD R

They had us by casting Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, Dracula’s disenchanted henchman, who wants to get out from under that bloodsucker’s fangs once and for all in this kooky comedy. But when Nicolas Cage was revealed as Dracula, we knew this would be a vampire flick like no other. Add in Awkwafina as a New Orleans traffic cop who gets embroiled with both and we’re really hoping that the jokes write themselves. We know we’re willing to give it a try!

SHOWING UP R

Five-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams can read the phone book and make it interesting, there’s little doubt that her new role here, as an artist readying a new show while juggling all the things modern women have on their hands, is another nuanced performance. She costars with Hong Chau as her landlady and artistic rival; both actresses were Oscar nominees this year, as was Judd Hirsch, who also stars in this heartfelt comedy about being creative and just Showing Up.

THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE PG

You don’t have to still be a kid to be excited about this new animated adventure starring Mario, the most popular arcade game hero ever. Of course, his brother Luigi is almost as popular, and the two have a blast in this adventure that races Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom as he must find Luigi and save the world. Chris Pratt voices Mario, Charlie Day is Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy lends her lilting tones to Princess Peach in this flick that Mario lovers both young in real life and young at heart can equally enjoy.

AND CRIMINALS

CITADEL Prime Video

International spy agency Citadel falls to the very bad guys as this new action thriller series begins. How will the good guys recover when their memories are erased? Will the whole world fall into a fascist state run by a syndicate filled with amoral members? That’s what stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden must figure out as spies for the good guys, led by Stanley Tucci, as those evil forces try to rule the world. This oft-told tale just might scare you this time!

GHOSTED Apple TV+

Fresh off her Oscar nomination for playing Marilyn Monroe, Ana de Armas is back being a dark-haired beauty, this time reunited with her Knives Out leading man Chris Evans in this romantic adventure romp. She’s a secret agent, he’s just a regular guy, and let the games begin. The supporting cast is terrific, too, with Tim Blake Nelson, Amy Sedaris, Tate Donovan, and Adrien Brody along for the ride.

THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME Apple TV+

Jennifer Garner takes the lead in this thriller series as she discovers that her husband (Game of Thrones hunk Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has vanished. It takes a lot to untangle this crime—and her teenage stepdaughter (Angourie Rice) seems to hold the key to unraveling this twisted story of having a criminal right in your own house—and not knowing it. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name.

LOVE & DEATH

HBO

Writer-producer David E. Kelley (Big Sky, Big Little Lies) turns this twisted true-life story into a series, as he explores all the lust, jealousy, and violence that overwhelms two Texas couples as their lives begin to inexorably intertwine as they spend Sundays together at church services. It’s a tawdry tale that stars Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons, Lily Rabe and Patrick Fugit.

MURDER MYSTERY 2 Netflix

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler return as married private detectives Nick and Audrey in this follow up to their first pairing, which hit Netflix in 2019. They are still struggling to find success, but this time they get to flit around the world searching for their kidnapped pal, who is snatched from his extremely elaborate Indian wedding. Lots of things blow up, jokes abound, and we all get to see Paris before the mystery is solved. Mark Strong, Adeel Akhtar, Melanie Laurent and Tony Goldwyn join in this criminal romp.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

One of Shakespeare’s early comedies, The Comedy of Errors, is a fast-paced farce exploring mistaken identities and relations lost and found. This production was captured by Digital Theatre live at the Clapham Community Project. It was devised specifically for schools and families by the Royal Shakespeare Company in collaboration with the critically acclaimed theatre company, Told by an Idiot. Directed by Paul Hunter, it features a cast of the RSC’s ensemble and uses a pared-down script, props, live music, and physical comedy to convey the story.

KISS ME, KATE

Taking its inspiration from Shakespeare, this hilarious musical romp recounts the backstage and on-stage antics of two feuding romances during an out-of-town tryout for a musical adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew. Directed by Michael Blakemore, this Tony winner for “Best Revival” stars Brent Barrett, Rachel York, Nancy Anderson, and Michael Berresse as the squabbling couples whose offstage disputes entangle them with a pair of song-and-dance gangsters and a pompous U.S. Army General.

MACBETH

Inspired by the prophecies of three witches, a murderous king claws his way to power. Surrender to the Stratford Festival’s production of this haunting story of ambition and its dark consequences, as a military hero and his wife conspire to seize the throne of Scotland.

CONTEMPORARY ART FROM EMERGING ARTISTS

MvVO ART will bring the AD ART SHOW 2023 to Powerhouse Arts, Brooklyn, New York, from October 15th – 16th. This contemporary art show bridges the Art World and the Advertising industry by featuring fine art created by artists working in advertising, and design, directly for brands and related fields or who began in the industry.

Since its launch in 2018 at Sotheby’s, the MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW has been introducing art lovers, collectors, curators, gallerists, and critics to the talented fine artists from the advertising industry. A committee of contemporary art experts approves participants in the annual show, and a jury of collectors determines prize winners. In addition, MvVO ART supports participating artists with an ongoing artsy gallery page where art can be purchased and extensive social media promotion.

MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW 2023 will exhibit paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, and mixed media works at Powerhouse Arts, a leading contemporary art fabrication facility housed in the spectacular former Brooklyn Rapid Transit power plant. Built in 1904, and once affectionately known as “The Batcave,” Powerhouse Arts was redesigned and reimagined by Herzog & de Meuron, the architects of Tate Modern.

“The artists are following in the footsteps of Edward Hopper, an art director; Rene Magritte, a graphic designer; and Andy Warhol, an illustrator, as well as many other famous names in art who began in advertising.

“The 6th edition of MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW is an extraordinary opportunity for emerging artists to get discovered!” said Maria van Vlodrop, Founder & CEO of MvVO ART, and the creator of AD ART SHOW—The Platform for Artists from Advertising, named a Top Ten Cultural Shaper, Creative 100 Adweek Award.

The Clio Awards, a longtime supporter and partner of MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW, will present a specialty Clio Award for work selected by the MvVO ART jury of collectors. In addition, the Top Ten artists will show their art on gigantic outdoor billboard canvases by OUTFRONT.

“The artists featured in the AD ART SHOW are among the most dynamic and creative thinkers in the advertising industry, and we’re so glad to be giving them a platform for recognition by both the ad world and the art world. We’re excited to partner with MvVO ART for the 4th year as part of our growing effort to celebrate creativity in its many forms,” said Clio CEO Nicole Purcell.

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER

GERARD SENEHI

Mentalist superstar, motivational speaker, corporate entertainer, and entrepreneur Gerard Senehi is an amazing person to be around, any way you slice it. Recognized internationally as “The Experimentalist,” he is also difficult to define. He defies all categories, evoking mystery and inspiring audiences to be curious about what they can see and don’t know. In addition, he is the Founder of The Open Future Institute: The QUESTion Project—a non-profit organization founded to expand the role of education.

Gerard creates a captivating environment where audience members can reimagine their ideas of what’s achievable while challenging them to explore possibilities beyond imagined boundaries. For example, Senehi first became inspired by unseen possibilities at 10 when his friends drew cards from a deck, and he could correctly predict three in a row.

MAGIC & MENTALISM

Born in Paris and raised in Switzerland, he became even more enamored with the mysteries of the unknown not long after when his mother had a dream one night about a friend of hers accidentally catching herself on fire that then actually occurred. Already fluent in two languages and proficient in two more by the time he came to the United States at 12, Senehi spent hours in his bedroom exploring magic and mentalism and “becoming fascinated with the things I couldn’t understand.”

As a student at Amherst College in Massachusetts, he continued entertaining his classmates with impossible feats. However, he only considered performing professionally in the early 2000s, following a career as a science, art teacher, and social worker. Then, while doing nonprofit work, friends persuaded him to try show business. He began by calling a local New York talent agency which immediately took him on as a client after seeing his act.

Since then, he has been featured on numerous television programs nationally and internationally, including  The Today Show and  Ellen New York Magazine once referred to Senehi’s performances as “some sort of religious experience from the sixteenth century,” He has performed privately for everyone from former President Bill Clinton and legendary TV producer Norman Lear.

Many clients in the corporate world also quickly took notice, and he is often invited as the keynote presenter for conferences. They often comment on the near-impossible challenge of surpassing one of Senehi’s performances for future events. Deutsche Bank once said: “You were the most talked about presenter of our entire conference— and we had some of the most renowned thinkers in the world.”

DEDICATED TO EDUCATION

He founded the Open Future Institute and the QUESTion Project with his wife in 2014. He is dedicated to expanding the role of education to teach a new curriculum that helps high school students define who they are and approach their life and future with inspiration and purpose. The QUESTion Class is taught in public high schools in New York City and has reached over 12,000 students. Gerard graduated from Amherst College and received a Master of Education from the University of Massachusetts. He lives in New York City with his wife, Francesca. He regularly convenes a cross-section of the city’s brightest minds in “Evolutionary Salons” to explore human purpose and potential questions.

MY NEW YORK STORY

THE THREE WOMEN BEHIND CURA COLLECTIVE

Cura translates to care, and the empowering meaning represents a unique opportunity for making a systematic change in America today. Such lofty goals were born at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, a trio of friends—Lizzie Asher, Casey Kohlberg, and Laura Day Webb—recognized the dire need facing us and, more acutely, the frontline workers.

Cura Collective began as a vehicle to help those who had once saved the lives of both Lizzie Asher and Laura Day-Webb. They aimed to assist the overwhelmed nurses, technicians, and doctors facing the ravages of the virus. However, they wanted not simply to provide for hospital workers but to do so in a way that could help the rest of the surrounding community. So Cura Collective launched a program to help direct funds they raised to restaurants and keep them open, preparing warm meals for frontline workers, thus providing an economic safety net for restaurant workers. Here are the women behind the cause.

Lizzie Asher After graduating from Harvard Law School, Lizzie worked at a premiere New York law firm specializing in corporate law. Today she is the President of Macchu Pisco LLC. This womanowned and operated spirits company was the first to implement fair trade standards in the Pisco Valley of Peru. Lizzie also serves on the Board of Restaurant Workers Community Foundation and Board of Save Venice and chairs thechairs the endowment she and her husband created at City Squash, a nonprofit working with Latino children in the Bronx. Equally close to her heart is Lizzie’s contribution as a board member of Columbia Presbyterian’s ECMO Family Advisory Board.

Casey Kohlberg Casey is a writer, producer, and philanthropist based in New York. She has worked in various roles across the fashion, media, and film industries, most recently as a video producer, in addition to her philanthropic work. She has appeared in Allure, The Evening Standard, and Harper’s Bazaar Arabia; she is working on finishing her first novel and screenplay. Casey serves as the Chair of the Young Friends of Save Venice and is a Frick Young Fellows steering committee member. In addition, she serves as Vice President of the Camalotte Foundation, a private family foundation focusing on arts, education, women’s health, and climate change issues.

Laura Day Webb  Laura holds a Master›s in Art Business from Sotheby›s Institute of Art and is Director of Programming, Events, and Partnerships for High Line Nine Galleries in Chelsea. In addition, she is the Content Manager for Friend of the Artist and Development Officer for Patron Circle and Gifts at The Immigrant Artist Biennial. Alongside her roles, Laura is an independent curator and art consultant whose practice focuses predominantly outside the Western canon on historically overlooked and underrepresented artists.

She is a Co-Founder of The Royal Versailles Ball, The White Cross Ball, CoChair of The Winter Show’s Young Collectors Night, serves on the steering committee for the Young Friends of Save Venice, and is a Board Member of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

MORE INITIATIVES

In 2023, the non-profit will be dedicated to rolling out its Women’s Initiative. As the founders discussed the next phase of the evolution of the organization, they realized that all the touch points with all the various organizations with whom they had worked had been women. Hence, Cura aims to amplify the voices of other women leaders and undertake women-centered causes.

Principally amongst those is the Voluntary Intoxication Loophole. The group is committed to raising awareness of this safety issue that impacts women and the LBGQT+ community. Currently, in New York State, rape laws state that if a victim becomes intoxicated on their own and is later assaulted, that willing intoxication is equated with consent. This means that the attacker cannot be charged with rape, as rape laws do not apply. Unfortunately, this legal loophole means assaulters walk free since New York State continues to place the blame for the attack on the victims.

Cura Collective has programmed educational events on this issue during the Spring as the state legislature is considering revising the language to provide legal recourse to victims. Now, Cura Collective is promoting a petition to correct this egregious loophole. Cura Collective is aware that this is the state of the law not just in New York State but across 37 other states; surprisingly, states such as North Carolina and Arkansas have far more progressive laws than New York.

A PASSION FOR FOOD

many. The treasures found at Il Tinello East  blend years of tradition with innovative Italian cooking and provide a rich experience through a presentation that is purely matched by a delicious menu. The quality Italian ingredients, spectacular wine list, hand-crafted cocktails, and impeccable service showcase the restaurant’s heritage and pride in serving customers a memorable meal.

“We passionately care about tradition. “We know that people care about food quality as much as they do about ambiance and service,” states owner Benny Bello. “It humbles us to be able to operate a beloved restaurant that values and honors the quality of a good old-fashioned New York meal. There is simply nothing like it.”

Bello’s menu boasts a lunch and dinner service that is notably divine in presentation and taste factors that create a magical experience. Fresh homemade pasta, regional ingredients, and diverse wine list are desirable. Portions are as large as skyscrapers, and tastes are as rich as the Wall Street stock markets.

Such highlights at this quintessential restaurant include antipasti of  Grilled Portobello  with mixed green salad, goat cheese, and balsamic dressing; Capesante with pan-seared jumbo sea scallops,  brandy, saffron, herb sauce; and Crispy Calamari  with tomato sauce. “Everything you taste here represents the magic of New York City. This is our neighborhood food, and we know our customers love and appreciate it as much as we do every single day,” noted Bello.

The restaurateur carefully selected a menu to please everyone. His selection of freshly made in-house Pasta is woven into dishes such as Tagliolini with sea scallops, shrimp, cultured mussels, little neck clams, garlic, and fresh herbs; Penne with Portobello  Mushrooms fresh chopped tomato, garlic, olive oil; and Rigatoni with roasted eggplant, fresh tomato, basil, diced buffalo mozzarella. Entrees are just as superb  Scarcapariello  with lemon, white wine, and garlic; Veal Parmigiano  with Parmigiano and tomato sauce;  and the Campagnola  for two with beef,  chicken, sausages, peppers, potatoes, white wine, rosemary, and garlic topping the list of favorites.

Leave room for the famed desserts, including  Tiramisu, Panna Cotta, Italian Ricotta Cheesecake,  and Banana Flambe  table size. Cocktails are also part of this joyous experience with the 2nd Avenue Spritz with Litchi Liqueur, Prosecco, and St-Germaine Elderflower Liqueur; the New Fashion with Cincoro Reposado Tequila, Ramazzotti Amaro, fresh orange; and Side of 46th Street with Hennessy Cognac, Grand Marnier Liqueur, lemon juice.

Sophisticated décor in the tony location helps showcase a vibrant place to eat. But the room is never intimidating and always comfortable, as Il Tinello East delivers an experience perfect for celebrating your passion for food. All is done with classic white glove tableside servings that create elegance and embrace the desire for a wonderful old-fashioned dining experience.
