From Summer to School:

Ease Back in with Joy WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

A

h…. the lazy days of summer. Who doesn’t love them? Most wish they’d last longer! But before you know it, Autumn is rapidly approaching and so are all things “back-to-school!”

Summer is a time many families get to enjoy each other in a much more relaxed, loose way. Mornings no longer consist of washing up, dressing, eating, packing lunch boxes and school bags, and racing out the door for the bus. Evenings aren’t spent eating dinner, doing homework and extracurricular activities, and making sure to enforce early bedtimes. While

8

kiddos | August • September 2017

summer can be really enjoyable for families, and much more easy going, back to school can become an extension of summer fun and source of good-feelings, as well. Here are a few tips to keep the joy going from Summer to School: • Manage anxiety with a meditation or mindfulness practice. Like any big change, going back to school

can trigger anxiety or stress in both children and parents alike. What’s more, sensing the stress of a parent can trigger it in the child, and vice versa. Begin a routine mindfulness practice as a family to gain the benefits of reduced stress, anxiety and reactivity, improved memory and focus (just in time for that first math quiz) and improved general health. Checkout the Kiddos

Summer 2017 Edition, Page 16, for 5 fun ways to teach kids mindfulness and activities you can do as a family! • Begin to ease back into scheduled days. Catching lightning bugs by night…. catching the school bus by morning. Yikes! Most children go to bed later during the summer, and some (for those lucky parents) may wake up later, too. About a week or two before school begins - depending on

how much later your child stays up during the summer months- start bedtime 10 minutes earlier each night and wake them up ten minutes earlier each morning. For example, if your child goes to bed an hour later during the summer, it will take six nights to bring him or her back to school-night bedtime. This gradual adjustment allows your child to ease back in to proper school-time routines and schedules without shocking the system.

• Bedtime Reflections. Spend a few moments at night, before your child goes to bed, discussing something you are each grateful for or happy about, or something good that happened that day. Holding a positive focus before nodding off can lead to happier mornings, which lead to happier days! The more time we spend thinking about and talking about good things, the more great things we notice all around us everyday.

• Continue the Outdoor Fun. “Backto-school” does not have to signal the end of the Great Outdoors. Nature is very important to children, and adults alike. Studies have found that spending time in nature helps children build confidence, creativity, imagination and responsibility and reduces stress. It is also healthy for the body to be moving, and provides different stimulation than indoor activities. The Fall brings with it all sorts of activities outdoors like Halloween festivities, pumpkin patchs, corn mazes, hay rides, and apple picking. • Continue, or begin, healthy eating habits. When you eat good, you feel

good. Creating or continuing a healthy eating habit is ideal, as the benefits are vast: healthy weight, mental well-being, concentration and focus, strong bones and muscles, energy, immunity, faster healing and recovery and reduced risk for diseases in the future. Once the habit is put in place, it becomes less likely your children - or family - will reach for the junk food. Our bodies adjust to the new healthy habits and no longer crave the harmful chemicals and additives found in many processed foods these days. A general rule to follow for those not familiar with healthy habits, try to stick to the source (also called Whole Foods). If your food was picked, grown, or otherwise unchanged

by a “factory,” its a healthier choice to eat. Introduce a new healthy option into your meals, and slowly crowd out the old, unhealthy options. It doesn’t have to happen overnight. This can be a gradual change, but it has profound, long-term benefits. • Good Morning, Sunshine! Create healthy morning routines filled with love and peaceful exits. The pressure to rush around and out the door can be overwhelming. To alleviate stress and create a more joyful experience before school, practice a quick mindfulness activity (can be as short as 1 minute!), play upbeat music, or set a prayer or

t’s the time of year when school supply lists, new shoes and first-day photos are on every parent’s checklist. Back-to-school season is also the time when pre-teens should receive the tetanus-diphtheria-acelluar pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, the HPV vaccine and meningococcal vaccines to get the best protection from serious, sometimes deadly, diseases.

use for years and used on more than 1 billion people.

Protecting Your Child In the United States, approximately 30,000 cancers caused by HPV are diagnosed each year. Nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by infection with high-risk types of HPV. The virus also has been linked to five other types of cancer.

Ages for Vaccination To increase the chances of successful vaccination, the American Cancer Society recommends the following:

Cancer Prevention The HPV vaccine prevents the nine types of HPV that cause 90 percent of all cervical cancers and pre-cancers, as well as most cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus and throat. It also helps prevent infection by the two types of HPV that cause most genital warts. However, the vaccine works only if given well before an infection occurs. That’s why, in part, the American Cancer Society recommends that boys and girls get the vaccine at ages 11-12 to achieve the best immune response and most complete coverage against cancercausing strains of HPV. Despite the power of the HPV vaccination to prevent cancers caused by HPV, in 2015, only 28 percent of boys and 42 percent of girls completed the series. Many boys and girls in the United States

The vaccine is for males and females. While cervical cancer is one of the main cancers caused by HPV, the HPV vaccine is for both males and females. There are also cancers found in men that can be caused by HPV, including cancers of the anus, penis, throat and tongue.

Routine HPV vaccination for girls and boys should start at ages 11-12. The vaccination series can be started as early as age 9.

HPV vaccination is also recommended for females 13-26 years old and males 13-21 years old who have not started the vaccines, or who have started but not completed the series. Males 22-26 years old may also be vaccinated. However, it is important for people 22-26 years old who have not started the vaccines or completed the series to know that the vaccination at older ages can be less effective in lowering cancer risk.

HPV vaccination is also recommended through age 26 for men who have sex with men and for people with weakened immune systems (including people with HIV), if they have not previously been vaccinated. k

are not getting the HPV vaccine and are missing the protection it could provide. HPV Vaccine Facts and Fears As a way to help protect children from getting cancer as they get older, the American Cancer Society recommends HPV vaccines as a safe and effective practice. However, there are myths and rumors surrounding the potentially life-saving vaccine. The vaccine doesn’t cause fertility problems. Research shows that HPV vaccines don’t cause fertility problems, and can actually help protect women from future fertility problems linked to cervical cancer. The vaccine doesn’t contain harmful ingredients. Some parents may worry about the presence of aluminum in the vaccine, but it’s a safe amount. Vaccines containing aluminum have been in

• Consider a mouth guard to protect your child’s teeth during sports. Kids wear helmets, knee pads and other protective gear, so don’t forget about protecting their mouth. Mouth guards can help to protect teeth, lips, tongue, face and jaw against injuries. There are several types of mouth guards, including custom-made and over the counter stock options. Talk with your dentist about what is best for your child.

t’s back to school time, which means parents are busy getting ready and buying supplies for their kids. However, it is also important to take a moment and think about your child’s dental health. We’ve put together a convenient parent dental-to-do list to help you and your children make the most of this upcoming school year.

• Make an appointment with your child’s dentist to get a checkup and dental cleaning. We recommend this twice per year—and back-to-school is the perfect time to get it done. Don’t wait until there’s a tooth ache or noticeable tooth decay, which can result in missed school. Preventative and regular dental appointments can help identify problems before they become serious.

• Regular brushing and flossing should be part of your child’s daily routine. So as you’re stocking up on pens and notebooks for school, purchase a few extra toothbrushes for home. We recommend switching out our toothbrushes when they begin show wear, every few months. So go ahead an stock up for the school year. Now is also a good time to remind (or teach) your child about healthy dental habits, such as brushing at least twice per day and flossing daily.

• Think about your child’s school diet. Eating healthy is part of good dental health. Healthful choices for snacks and lunch include whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Notso-good choices include candy, junk food, and sugary soft drinks. So if your child takes a lunch to school, make sure you plan to include healthy foods. If your child eats in a school cafeteria, review healthy options with your child before school begins so that they make healthy choices on their own.

A Smile, we believe there is a strong connection between exercise, healthy eating and healthy teeth and gums. Teach your child to avoid harmful chemicals and overly processed foods. Choose whole foods, fruits and vegetables. Avoid tobacco. Drink water. Get involved in sports or be part of an exercise program. Manage stress. It’s important to encourage all of these healthy habits with your child. The way to a beautiful, sparkling smile is through making smart choices. k

breakfast tips

Tips for a Great School Day How your kids win with breakfast

nutritious breakfast is important to fuel your body and brain after an overnight fast, and provide the nutrition you need to start the day. For parents who want their children to be their best, good nutrition at breakfast can make all the difference. In fact a good breakfast is just as important as having sharp pencils and the right gym shoes. Tips to start the day right To help your kids get the right start to the school day, follow these nutrition and wellness tips: Be a Healthy Role Model Kids emulate everything their parents do, including eating habits when mealtime rolls around. Show your kids that making smart, healthy choices is something that is important and vital to you. When they see you choosing

Stock Up on Simple Options Do you ever have those hectic mornings when you’re trying to get everyone out the door? Easy-to-make breakfast options are great to have on hand, such as Carnation Breakfast Essentials(r) nutritional drinks and bars. These convenient products offer an easy and nutritious way for your kids to start their day right, with a rich source of protein and 21 vitamins and minerals, including calcium to help build strong bones. Mix Up Lunches A lunch consisting of a sandwich, cheese stick and apple can be boring after just a few days. Turn last night’s leftovers into a delicious lunchtime meal. For example, grilled chicken can be turned into a wrap, or taco meat can be a perfect topping for salad or rice. This type of repurposing can

save busy parents time and money throughout the school year. Get a Good Night’s Sleep A great day in the classroom starts with a restful night of quality, restorative sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, kids between ages 3-5 should get between 11-13 hours, while kids between ages 5-12 should get 10-11 hours of sleep. Create a good environment for sleep, which consists of a quiet, dark and cool room that is free of distractions, such as televisions, computers and smartphones. Make Breakfast Fun Keep the options for this important morning meal exciting for your kids by mixing in their favorite flavors. Smoothies are a kid favorite that can be quickly created with low fat milk, frozen fruit and a packet of Carnation Breakfast Essentials(r) powder drink mix. So help your children be their very best by incorporating these tips into your family routine. k

School Readiness: How to Improve Social Skills for kids WRITTEN BY: Bright Horizons

experiences emerge organically, but other times children benefit from the guidance of an adult.

A

ccording to the National School Readiness Study, there are five important factors that influence school readiness. These include motor skills, cognition and general knowledge, language and literacy, social-emotional interactions, and approach to learning.

and a long-term love of learning. The World Economic Forum confirms that early social skills carry over into career success. Tomorrow’s work force must be able to collaborate, communicate, and solve problems in an ever-changing world. In other words, social skill competency is an integral piece to success in school and in life.

So often the emphasis of school readiness becomes too narrowly focused on what children learn, rather than how they learn. But when asked, teachers emphasize the importance of social skills on children’s success in school—especially those that allow children to positively interact with peers, comfortably separate from their parents, and have curiosity and an interest in learning.

Social skills can be easily fostered in a variety of settings—at school, home, and on the playground. Most often the experiences emerge organically, but other times children benefit from the guidance of an adult. Learn how you can help your children build these necessary social skills at home.

Why Are Social Skills Important? School readiness is a part of your child’s daily life; it is not merely a to-do list in preparation for the “next step.” The larger goal of school readiness is to build a strong foundation of skills

16

kiddos | August • September 2017

How to Practice Social Skills at Home Read with your child often. When doing so, focus on the characters in the story and encourage your child to practice taking on new

perspectives. Ask your child questions such as, “What do you think she was thinking?” “How would you have tried to help her?” and “What do you think made her feel better?” This perspective taking helps your child learn to work with others. Provide opportunities for openended, child-directed play. When children play, they decide what materials to use, what to do, and when to stop or change to a different activity. They naturally try out roles, experiment with cause and effect, test conclusions, and practice getting along with others. Researchers have shown that high-quality play experiences not only enhance cognitive and academic skills, but also build social skills as children work together. Ample play experiences can even build memory and language. Additionally, play helps your child learn to work in a group, make friends, and practice resolving problems with communication rather than aggression.

Most often, your child can work with other children to negotiate a solution to a problem. However, sometimes opportunities may emerge for you to offer some gentle guidance. Keep in mind that your child probably just needs a small suggestion on how to proceed, but not for you to solve the problem for them. This soft encouragement helps build their social competency. Play games. Board games such as Candy Land, Sorry, Yahtzee and Backgammon naturally encourage children to follow directions, focus attention, take turns with others and exert selfcontrol while waiting their turn. These are all social skills that translate directly into school success.

For more than 30 years, Bright HorizonsŽ early education centers and preschools have been helping children around the world develop confidence and a passion for learning. Bright Horizons is committed to the field of early education and to practices that guide each child’s social, physical, emotional, and cognitive development. For more information on our curriculum, visit brighthorizons.com/programs/ care-school-curriculum.

Solution: 1 - 6, 4 - 10, 5 - 7, 8 - 2, 9 - 3.

While there are many daily opportunities to foster social skills, this area of development is never a fait accompli. Children and adults are continually growing, learning, and improving upon who they are. We all have moments where we stumble and need a little guidance or support of others. Keep this in mind and accept that some days your child may need more assistance in this area, while on other days they may even offer you a bit of insight into your own social skill development. k

intention for the day with your children. It’s more important to send your child off with love and good-feeling (and for you, too!) than to rush them out to make sure they don’t miss the bus, barely speaking a word to one another but passing each other by to grab this or that. The momentum that begins in the morning can carry through to the entire day. Ask yourself, how do I want my day to go? How do I wish to send my child off today? And make sure to say I love you! • Schedule one-on-one time with your child(ren). During the summer, families tend to spend a lot more time together. And with school comes activities, programs, homework… the list can go on and on. It may seem like a stretch to plug in some one-on one time with your child(ren), but the rewards and benefits of that undivided attention will be worth it. Even 15 minutes spent reading, cuddling, talking or doing an activity together can become precious, cherished memories and moments that really make life worth living. While Summer is undoubtedly a really awesome time, back-to-school doesn’t mean there will be no more fun. Implement these tips into your routine and daily life, and you can breathe life back in to an otherwise stressful or daunting time for parents and children.

The benefits of these activities or practices will have lasting effects that improve and enhance your life overall, create connection and strengthen your bond as a family. A Sweet Solution for Busy School Days Grape and Ricotta Pita Pizzas

Breakfast: A cup of creamy yogurt and crunchy granola takes on a sweet note when topped with a handful of grapes. Slice or quarter grapes then mix well for a medley of textures and flavors. Lunch: A handful of grapes can balance out a sandwich and add some sweet indulgence to the midday meal. Dinnertime rush: Use grapes for an easy side dish that goes with anything. A quick meal like grilled cheese and grapes brings out the kid in everyone.

Parents: Harmful mold can severely impact your children’s health WRITTEN BY: Jesse Scheckner

A

parent’s natural state is one of constant worry. It’s why we childproof our houses, hide dangerous substances and make our children wary of strangers and unsafe situations. But some unsafe situations go unnoticed—malignant environmental conditions right under our noses that, if left unchecked and unaddressed, can seriously harm those we love and wish to protect. Mold is one such malignant condition. Microscopic organisms belonging to the fungi family, mold reproduces through airborne spores and can propagate on almost any surface. It most commonly thrives in humid, warm and damp environments. “Southeast Florida is the only locale in the U.S. with a tropical climate”, said Dr. Gary Rosen, a Florida licensed building contractor and accredited mold remediation instructor. “The climate is ideal for hidden mold growth”.

Common types, such as Aspergillus, Penicillium and Stachybotrys (also known as “black mold” and “the silent killer”), are associated with an array of health risks including respiratory difficulties, fatigue, immune suppression, chronic nasal congestion, sinusitis, eye irritation, rashes, eczema and fever. In some cases, it can lead to death. For young children, infants and unborn babies, mold may cause lifelong health conditions. An 8-year study by the University of Southern California that followed 1,759 schoolchildren from fourth grade to graduation found that exposure to polluted air, including airborne mold spores, stunts development of children’s lungs and can lead to reduced respiratory capacity, among other health problems. “New studies show that not only can indoor mold cause permanent damage to children’s respiratory systems, but mold toxin exposure during childhood increases the chance of developing ADHD”, Rosen said.

This is certainly disconcerting, but affordable, effective solutions are available. If you suspect your home may be harming you due to mold or other airborne contaminants, it is recommended you contact a Florida State Licensed Mold Remediation Specialist as soon as possible. k

tips

Back-to-School Tips that Save Time and Money ack-to-school season means it’s time to get back to the business of learning. This year you can ace your back-to-school shopping excursion with these time- and moneysaving steps that can make getting the whole family ready for a new school year a breeze. Start with a list. Walking into the store without a list is an open invitation for impulse buys and forgotten items that end up costing you more time and money with a return trip. Create a thorough list by categorizing all the items you’ll shop for, such as supplies, electronics and clothing.

Cut extra stops. Dashing all over town to find all the items on your supply list is not only time-consuming, it’s unnecessary. At stores like Office Depot and OfficeMax, you can find all the academic tools and supplies your student needs to head back to the classroom. What’s more, a store that specializes in school supplies will have a broad selection and ample stock of the essentials. Try online shopping. When you know exactly what you need, shopping online is a great time-saving solution.

If you need to hand-select a few items in person, you can always take advantage of a “buy online, pick-up in store” option. This service lets you do your shopping from home with just a quick stop in-store to pick-up your purchases. Research specials and promotions. For many stores, the back-to-school shopping season is second only to the holidays. This means you can expect widespread sales, promotions and special deals, such as “deals as low as a penny.” Some states also offer tax-free holidays near the beginning of the school year, which are honored at multiple retailers and generally restricted to school-related purchases like clothing, supplies and some technology. k

Take more notes on smart back-toschool shopping ideas and deals at officedepot.com.

Photography: Getty Images

Set a budget. Knowing what you can afford to spend ahead of time can save regret and returns after you shop. Calculate how much you’ll need to cover all the items your students truly need, then tack on some room for wants. If your total budgeted expenses exceed your available funds, consider browsing weekly circulars to keep your budget in check.

Explore your inventory. It may be buried under a summer’s worth of knick-knacks, but digging out the supplies your child cast aside at the end of the last school year may be worth the effort. Items like scissors, rulers and protractors may not need to be replaced every year if they’re still in working condition. Assess what items you have that can be reused and those that need to be replaced for the new school year.

Health and Safety Go Hand-in-Hand

ost people recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle when it comes to physical and emotional well-being, but you may not realize that some health-related activities can pose a safety risk if you don’t take proper precautions. Making safe habits part of your healthy lifestyle can help ensure you’re able to enjoy the results of your efforts. Warm up your workout. Exercise and physical activity are essential to a healthy lifestyle, but failing to approach your workouts with the proper warm up and know-how can really backfire. According to the experts at WebMD, a warm up is important because it gets the blood circulating and eases muscles into more vigorous activity, getting them loose, warm and ready for the challenge.

26

kiddos | August • September 2017

Know that technique matters. Another potential safety pitfall when it comes to working out is improperly using weight machines or employing an improper technique for activities like yoga or core training. Failing to execute your exercises correctly cannot only produce sub-par results; you may actually end up hurting yourself by causing a sprain or other injury. Even if you tend to be a loner when it comes to working out, enlist the expertise of a trainer or coach who can show you the ropes before you set out solo. Exercise caution outdoors. A few hours spent in the great outdoors can leave you and your kiddos feeling refreshed and invigorated; fresh air is good for your body and your spirit. However, spending too much time soaking up the

sun can have a detrimental impact on your health – overexposure to UV rays is a major risk factor for developing skin cancer. Exposure to the elements, such as strong winds or harsh cold, can also take a toll on your body. The American Melanoma Foundation recommends lathering up with a sunscreen that has a Skin Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 any time you’ll be outdoors for more than 20 minutes. Even winter conditions pose a threat to bare skin, as snow can actually reflect UV radiation. Be wary of expiration dates. Most people at least periodically use prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines as part of their commitment to staying healthy. However, for people who rarely use medicines, their cabinets may be filled with potentially

dangerous, expired medications. According to the FDA, both prescriptions and over-the-counter meds can lose their effectiveness over time and even become unsafe. Especially concerning are the medicines that can change the chemical composition or become a breeding ground for bacteria over an extended period of time. That’s why it’s important to properly discard medicines after their expiration dates have passed. Make reasonable eating choices. With countless diet options available, it may seem impossible to know which is most likely to help you achieve your desired results. When evaluating eating plans, be careful to avoid diets that are excessively restrictive, as these can have a serious impact on bodily organs that rely on nutrients to function. Also be wary of diets that recommend cutting entire food groups; a balanced diet with

moderate portion sizes is the best approach for delivering your body the nutrition it needs for top performance. Committing to healthier living is an important step, so be sure you can reap the rewards by making your journey to better health a safe one. k

WE COACH FOUNDATION “Fostering Functional Futures” SOURCE: We Coach Foundation

The running club is the perfect natural setting for families to experience

e Coach Foundation was founded by Alicia Morgado and Luciana Leo as a vehicle for them to share their motivation, dedication, and willingness to help special needs families on a quest for providing a better, more wholesome life for their children. The mission of the organization is to foster skills through family and individual training, support, and community involvement. “We want participating families to develop functional independence, social, pragmatic, and community integration in their day-to-day lives. Above all, we want their quality of life to improve tenfold,” said Leo and Morgado. Why We Coach was founded? “Our belief is that family and caregiver involvement is an important key to help individuals with special needs to thrive. In our years of experience, we learned that parent and caregiver involvement is often overlooked. We want for families to be as prepared as possible to negotiate the challenges

28

that may await them as their children transition thru life. We understand the impact that interventions and services within the community have in the families lives. Nonetheless, parent/ caregiver training and education are as vital for individuals to generalized the learned skills into their natural environment, which is home” said Leo We Coach Programs All programs provided by We Coach are free of charge for the families. We Coach Foundation serves as a platform for special needs families to learn, practice, and globalize daily skill sets while promoting community integration. This environment provides a unique opportunity for both, the individuals and their families, to empower functional independence and productive interactions. The MAP Program is a parenttraining course for helping families explore the potential in everyday tasks. MAP allows families to create a dynamic plan of care for an individual’s potential growth, as well

as life and self-care skills foundation program where participants gain age appropriate skills in various environments. Their second program, Run It Out Miami, is an inclusive family running club which promotes healthy lifestyles and positive self-esteem to its members. The club is open to runners of all levels of ability. We Coach promotes community involvement, acceptance, and inclusion. The running club is the perfect natural setting for families to experience neurodiversity. Members learn to be more emphatic and to feel comfortable interacting with individuals with different personalities and abilities. Run It Out club meets every other Sunday at 9:30 am at Evelyn Greer Park in Miami. Run It Out members participate in running events in the community through the year. The final program, Hangout Social Club, provides the special needs community of Miami a variety of

recreational and learning opportunities to build friendships and skills in a non-judging, non-threatening group environment. The main goal is to give individuals the necessary and appropriate tools to develop and perfect their social/life skills, gain friendships and confidence. We Coach Foundation is currently working on their inaugural Transition Conference for Special Needs Families. This event will be an exciting opportunity for families to learn about planning for ongoing transitions their loved ones will experience as they grow up, and the services provided in the community. This one-day event will be filled with valuable lectures and workshops, discussion panels, children’s activities, and over 40 exhibitors on site sharing their products and services with the families. The event will be held on Saturday, November 4th at the Intercontinental Doral from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Registration is free of charge.

How Your Pet May

Improve Your Health When you’re sick and your cat curls up on your lap, you might think you feel a little better. If you take your dog to work, you may notice that the day is less stressful. Or if you travel with your four-legged friend, maybe you think you sleep better.

T

urns out you don’t just think you feel better, but your pet may actually make you healthier. A growing body of scientific research supports that this “pet effect” is real.

Other research shows that pets may help prevent allergies in children, strengthen the immune system, increase social interaction, benefit children with autism and provide relief for victims of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Animal health company Zoetis has launched a campaign called The Pet Effect to raise awareness about how pets make people healthier and how, by extension, the veterinary professionals who keep pets healthy are key contributors to human and public health. The company has launched this campaign with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI).

Pets may also provide mental health benefits. Studies show that dogs and cats can reduce several symptoms of depression, including loneliness, loss of interest and feelings of worthlessness. Pets are also shown to reduce stress and anxiety.

“We’ve learned that human well-being is enhanced because of a healthy relationship with a pet. Now we want to educate pet owners, veterinarians, doctors, employers and non-pet owners about these overall health benefits,” said Dr. J. Michael McFarland, group director, companion animal marketing at Zoetis. “We are hopeful this will help improve policies regarding pets in public places and also improve public health.” The research collected by HABRI shows a variety of potential positive effects of pets; for example, that having a dog or cat can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. One study from the University of Minnesota even found that people who have never owned a cat have a 40 percent higher relative risk of death from a heart attack.

32

kiddos | August • September 2017

Human health professionals are starting to take notice that pets change people at more than just the emotional level. A HABRI study found that 97 percent of

physicians believe there are health benefits to owning a pet and most of them had recommended a patient get a pet. Veterinarians are key to educating pet owners about the many benefits of The Pet Effect. Research from HABRI overwhelmingly illustrates that pet owners have a high level of trust in their veterinarian and more than 60 percent would be more likely to visit their veterinarian if he or she discussed the human-animal bond. So the next time you’re feeling a little blue, anxious or stressed out, maybe the best prescription isn’t necessarily from the pharmacy, but at your local animal shelter. k

Helping Students Soar to Excellence this School Season

S

chool-age children, from preschoolers to college students, need vaccines. Making sure that your children receive all their vaccinations on time is one of the most important things you can do as a parent to ensure your children’s longterm health-as well as the health of friends, classmates, and others in your community. Getting every recommended dose of each vaccine provides children with the best protection possible. Keep in mind that there are many opportunities to catch-up on vaccines for your preteen or teen. Preteens and teens typically see their doctors or other health care professionals for physicals before participation in sports, camping events, travel, and applying to college. Immunization is one of modern medicine’s most significant public health achievements. Vaccines have eradicated smallpox, stopped wild poliovirus, measles, and rubella from being able to spread widely in the United States, and significantly reduced the number of cases of other diseases.
