What Does Love Mean To Kids? WRITTEN BY: Camile Lucy

So, what is LOVE? The word "love" is something we all find personal meaning in. We all want to share love with someone, to receive love, to feel loved. Love is a ruling theme in our lives (well, duh, it’s what we came from and what we always return to). We search for it during all stages of development, from childhood to adolescence, to adulthood and into our golden years. We seek out love from parents, family, peers, employers, and acquaintances, just to name a few. To understand love more deeply, who better to ask than our kiddos? Their innocence, charm and humor are captivating…and they’re great teachers!

Ana Vera Age: 8 School: Boyle Road Elementary Port Jefferson Station, NY. Favorite Hobby or Activity: Gymnastics. What is Love? My mom. What is Valentine's Day? Spending time with Family. How do you show love every day? By telling people I love them. What’s your favorite way someone shows you love? Hugging me. Can you describe LOVE in 3 different words? Mom. Dad. Sisters.

Marco Andre Age: 12 School: Palmetto Middle Favorite Hobby or Activity: Soccer, Jujitsu and Chess. What is Love? The true definition of what you feel for someone. What is Valentine's Day? A day to express our feelings and real thoughts to people. How do you show love every day? Doing stuff together with Mom and Dad, being kind and respectful. What’s your favorite way someone shows you love? Treating me the same way they want to be treated. Can you describe LOVE in 3 different words? Family, values and respect.

By saying thank you, caring, helping, and sharing. What’s your favorite way someone shows you love? Saying nice words, helping me. Can you describe LOVE in 3 different words? Care, praying, kind.

Joaquin Enrique Age: 7 School: KLA Favorite Hobby or Activity: Soccer and fishing. What is Love? Giving flowers and chocolates. What is Valentine's Day? Is a day when you do helpful things to other people. How do you show love every day? Kissing and hugging my parents. What’s your favorite way someone shows you love? When my parents protect me. This Valentine’s Day (and everyday), try to appreciate all the Love that there is in your life, no matter how that looks: kids, friends, family, loved ones, spouses or significant others, animals, businesses, hobbies, passions… the list is endless. Love takes so many different forms. If we look close enough, we will see so

many examples of how much Love we have right Now. And don’t forget to take time to treat someone special (YOU) to some extra TLC. The world will be a brighter place: the better you feel, the bigger your shine. The bigger your shine, the greater positive impact you have on everyone, including your family.

importance of an overall healthy lifestyle for people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Consumers can also follow National Nutrition Month on the Academy’s social media channels including Facebook and Twitter using #NationalNutritionMonth.

Registered dietitian nutritionists are uniquely qualified to help reduce food loss and waste by individuals, families, communities and businesses. About 31 percent of all edible food is wasted in the U.S., and American households throw away nearly 28 percent of fruits and vegetables.

Knowing how to read a date label is also key to making sure good food isn't wasted. The "sell by" date lets the store know when it should stop selling a package to manage inventory; "best if used by" is the last date recommended for the customer's use of a product at its peak quality.

As a founding member of Further with Food Center for Food Loss and Waste Solutions, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is committed to cutting food loss and waste in the United States in half by 2030. Visit furtherwithfood.org/resources for great tools and resources.

"Far too often, good food goes bad before we get the chance to eat it," says registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Spokesperson Melissa Majumdar. "Before going to the grocery store, check inside your refrigerator. Eat what you already have at home before buying more."

"Although it's important to try to use food you've bought, if you have any doubts about it being safe to eat, throw it away," Majumdar says.

V

alentine's Day often means candy, and candy can be bad for our dental health. If you and your children indulge in sugary treats, do so wisely, with moderation, and be sure to brush and floss afterward. Valentine's Day is a good time to teach your kids about good oral hygiene and healthy diet choices. Having said that, there are many treats and gifts which do not involve candy. For starters, remember fresh fruit. A shiny red apple is a delicious and healthy snack. In keeping with this red theme, treat the family to strawberries, raspberries, or cherries, but be sure to watch out for pits. Use a cookie cutter to shape slices of watermelon (or other fruit and veggies such as pineapple or tomato) into heart shapes.

For other great Valentine's Day ideas, think arts and crafts. Valentine's Day provides an opportunity to spend quality craft time with your kids. One obvious and fun choice includes making Valentines Day cards. All it takes is colored paper, markers or crayons, pictures from a magazine, and glue. Or kick things up a notch by downloading a printable Valentine's Day card template from the internet. Here are more family craft ideas: • Instead of bags of candy, make small bags of toys (such as dinosaurs or kittens). You can even create your own fun Valentine labels for the bags. • Gather heart-themed costumes, balloons, or other props. Then take Valentine's Day family selfie photos and compile them into a storybook. • One of our personal favorite activities is

Ask Dr. Ted

to decorate “character bananas.” Use miniature costumes and props, which can be made from construction paper and toothpicks, and decorate the bananas (in their peels). For example, give them eyes, lips, a hat, sunglasses, and a big construction paper heart. Be creative. After the kids have a little fun with their characters, peel and enjoy the bananas. Valentine's Day gift options include books, clothing, or flowers. Plus, don't forget the tradition of giving (and receiving) cute stuffed animals, maybe a teddy bear. Finally, if your family is ready to take on the responsibility for its care, consider a real puppy or kitten for Valentines Day. That's a gift that should brighten your kid's smile. We hope these ideas help you make the most out of your Valentine's Day. Remember, beautiful, healthy smiles are a family affair.

Getting a Start on Healthy Eating Habits March is National Nutrition Month – a great time to take stock and make healthy changes for yourself and your family. SOURCE: Bright Horizons Family Solutions

s we know, children often times shy away from the raw veggie tray and the fruit salad bowl, preferring a grab-and-go bag of chips or high-sugar cereal instead. But healthy eating isn't all about broccoli and peas. It's about habits and routines.

ing a connection to family memories. This can be a time for interesting discussions that also build language skills. Posing a daily question, such as, "The best thing about my day so far..." can become a family ritual to which everyone looks forward.

Here are a few ways to help your child get a healthy start on eating habits:

• Involve your children in the meal preparations. Children often love to help by washing veggies, peeling carrots, breaking lettuce, or helping to set the table.

• Remember that eating habits are established early and often are resistant to change. This is an important area of your child's development, and you should not hesitate to speak with your pediatrician if you have questions or concerns about health, growth, or weight. • Make dinnertime together a priority (no matter how difficult). The family dinner is an endangered institution, but it is a hugely valuable routine that is critical in establishing lifelong patterns and creat-

• At mealtime, have age-appropriate table expectations. Allow children to serve themselves when possible. Encourage small portions, but let them know that they can have second helpings. Model serving portions that aren't too hefty. Resist the temptation to push the "clean plate club" as this can result in patterns of overeating. Allow children to stop eating when they are no longer hungry.

I

t can be difficult for parents to know exactly when to start teaching their children how to identify colors and numbers or when the right time is to start reading to them. However, the earlier parents begin reading to their kids, the better prepared they can be once they reach school age. In fact, reading to children at home can set them up for success in school and in life, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics. With the right resources, parents can influence their kids’ enjoyment of reading. These tips from the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program, which aims to motivate

kindergarten through sixth-grade students to read by rewarding them with praise and pizza, can help inspire a lifelong love of reading. Read to your children early and often. Parental involvement is one of the best predictors of future academic achievement, according to research published in the Journal of Prevention & Intervention in the Community. Getting into a routine of reading to your children at a young age is a habit that can be pivotal to developing a love of reading. As you read, point out words, colors and images and ask questions about the story to help children develop a deeper understanding and relate

what they have learned back to other books and activities. Regularly visit the library. Libraries typically have lists available of favorite books for various age groups and can help parents and kids create reading lists of stories that match reading levels and interests. Additionally, attending “story times” and other library activities tailored to age-specific target audiences can expose your child to new books. Make books easily accessible. Having multiple locations in the home where you keep books can inspire children to pick one up any time. Start with a main bookshelf in

kiddos your child’s room that lets him or her easily see the titles, and place additional book storage locations in different rooms where your family typically spends the most time. Get comfy. Creating the perfect spot (or spots) to read has a lot to do with individual children. While some prefer to read with mom and dad in a chair or on a couch, others prefer their own space where they can cuddle up with a good book. If space allows, consider dedicating a corner of your child’s bedroom or playroom as a “book nook.”

Visual Puzzle Match the pairs - find the exact mirrored copy for every picture of colorful stacked cups.

Take advantage of technology. The use of technology can aid in creating excitement about reading. To help develop strong reading habits and enhance your child’s vocabulary and ability to comprehend, consider supplementing traditional books with devices such as e-readers and tablets or smartphones equipped with ageappropriate reading and learning applications. Keep reading. Children often see their parents as role models. If you read often, your children will be more likely to pick up the habit, as well, according to a BOOK IT! survey. It revealed that adults who have gone through the program are more likely to establish regular reading routines with their families, as 54 percent of the survey respondents said they read with their children every day, compared to 32 percent who did not participate in the program.

Ready, Set, Enroll! M-DCPS Early Childhood Programs and VPK Enrollment Campaign

Applications for children 3 and 4 years old are now being accepted for the 2018-2019 school year.

M

iami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) Department of Early Childhood Programs, “Where learning begins,” has launched its Ready, Set, Enroll! campaign with a variety of early childhood education and Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) programs for the 2018-2019 school year.

Florida’s VPK Education Program: VPK, a free program that prepares four-year-olds for kindergarten and beyond, is available in over 180 schools countywide. Children must be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2018 to enroll. M-DCPS’ VPK Program uses a lottery to select students. After submitting a completed school registration packet to their home/neighborhood school

before the February 22, 2018 deadline, families will be entered into the VPK lottery. The lottery will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018. Children whose names are drawn in the lottery will be selected to attend the program. Head Start Program: This federally funded, comprehensive, child development program serves children from low-income families who will be 3 to 5 years old by September 1, 2018. Children with disabilities are included in the program and receive a full range of developmental services. Eligibility for Head Start is based on family income at or below the federal poverty level. The open enrollment period for the 2018-2019 school year is January 16 - May 11, 2018. Families can apply by visiting any of the 34 MiamiDade Head Start sites across the county and completing an application. A list of the participating schools is available by visiting the Head Start website at headstart.dadeschools.net. Inclusion Program: General education students are needed for Pre-K special education inclusion across the district. This program offers a free, full-day opportunity for qualifying students. General education students must be 3 - 4 years old by September 1, 2018, and must have age-appropriate language and social skills.

Reverse Mainstream Program: Role model students are needed for a limited number of slots in Pre-K special education reverse mainstream programs across the district. This program offers a free, full-day or half-day opportunity for qualifying students. Role model students must be 3 to 4 years old by September 1, 2018, and must have age-appropriate language and social skills because they will serve as models for children with disabilities.

Take a journey through the extraordinary basins of the world’s wildest rivers in our newest special exhibition, Monster Fish: In Search of the Last River Giants. Your guide through this incredible expedition is Dr. Zeb Hogan, an aquatic ecologist and host of Nat Geo’s WILD series “Monster Fish.” From the Amazon to Australia, you’ll travel to the regions these rare giants inhabit and learn about the biodiversity of their habitats, their extraordinary biology and behavior, and the impact they have on the places that depend on them. Through detailed maps, sculptures and custom illustrations, the exhibition showcases close to 20 fish species and their diverse freshwater ecosystems. You’ll climb on top of a 20-foot sawfish replica, watch adrenaline-pumping video installations of monster fish in action, step on to a large scale with your group to see your equivalent weight in monster fish and catch magnetic fish from a stylized riverbank.

Highlights of the exhibition include: • A boat-turned-theatre that you can climb aboard and view five video shorts featuring Zeb Hogan talking about what it’s like to search the world for monster fish. • Five life-size monster fish sculptures, including a sawfish, a pirarucu, a goonch, a giant carp and an American paddlefish. • Tactile and digital interactives that highlight how monster fish grow, how scientists study them and how anglers and other individuals can help them survive. Monster Fish: In Search of the Last River Giants on view through spring 2018 at Frost Science. Admission is complimentary with museum tickets. More information is available at frostscience.org/monsterfish. Monster Fish is developed and traveled by the National Geographic Society.

Anti-Drug Challenge Encourages Students to be Part of the Solution Photography: Getty Images

Prescription opioid misuse and heroin use have reached epidemic levels in the United States.

N

ow, students have the opportunity to compete for prizes as they engage in a national challenge to communicate messages to their peers about the dangers these drugs pose. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the DEA Educational Foundation and Discovery Education, a leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, have come together to offer the second annual Operation Prevention Video Challenge. The challenge is an extension of Operation Prevention, a nationwide program that educates students about the science behind addiction and its impact on the brain and

body. The program’s interactive, standards-aligned resources are available at no cost to help promote lifesaving discussions in the classroom and at home. “Following the success of the first Operation Prevention Video Challenge, DEA looks forward to once again engaging youth in this creative opportunity to communicate anti-opioid messages,” said Sean Fearns, chief of community outreach, DEA. “This kind of peer-topeer education has the unique ability to better resonate with teens, discouraging prescription drug abuse before it starts.” The video challenge encourages teens to create a 30-60 second original public service announce-

ment that warns other students about the dangers of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use. The challenge aims to inspire teens to research the opioid epidemic, identify its widespread impact on the country and the substances’ harmful effects on the body, and start a social movement that encourages authentic dialogue about this critical issue.

Miami is Kind You buy, we employ…it’s simple!... It’s Kind. Employ professionals with Autism/disABILITIES while creating delicious traditional treats.

F

or twelve years Silvia Planas-Prats held an executive leadership role with DuPont Corporation in Barcelona, Spain. While working at DuPont, she was running late one morning for a conference call. This call became the catalyst that changed her destiny. Once on the conference call she apologized to her colleagues for running late and decided to be honest as to the reason why. “My apologies, I have an autistic son and this morning he had a tantrum.” At the end of the call, one of the executives on the other end of the line spoke to her at length about his own son with autism and all the wonderful schooling opportunities America had to offer. It was then and there that Silvia decided to move her family to the United States. She and her husband decided it was the best thing to do for their family and Miami became the ultimate destination. Letting go of her career was not easy, but Silvia knows it was the most important decision of her life and the best way to give her son Marc amazing opportunities he otherwise would not have had. In Barce-lona, Marc had such severe behavioral problems that his capabilities were overshadowed. Dismissals from school, lack of sleep, no socializing, and a limited learning environment, was his daily reality.

just happens to have autism. He loves riding his bike, dancing and baking. He’s come a long way with the help of the Miami- Dade County Public School system, and Silvia is so grateful for the programs being offered to him.

When Silvia and her family move to Miami she started advocating for Autism/Disabilities, and in a short period of time, she saw that when children with Autism become 22 they couldn’t find a job. Decided to take the employment challenge head on and in October 2015 founded Miami is kind, an industrial bakery for professionals with autism/disABILITIES. Marc is now a 16-year-old boy that

Meet our Bakers

Mission The first product line are gluten free, deliciously healthy gourmet artisan macaroons. Started in October 2015 hiring two bakers educated in Bakery & Pastry Arts. Then they hired 2 additional bakers in December 2015 and a fifth baker in February 2016. And in 2017 they already have 7 bakers. Miami Is Kind demonstrates that with adequate instruction, a properly structured workplace, and a solid business background – like the one I havepersons with Autism/ disABILITIES excel at a workplace and make the companies they work for profitable.

Anthony Casanoves

We employ bakers that graduated from JRE Lee Educational Center baking program; a one in a kind program by MiamiDade Public Schools and also bakers from other great programs in the community. Our employees have worked hard to get the best education available and to be the best professionals in their jobs. They are all about baking and being independent. In a few years they will be seen as the pioneers in an even Kinder Miami that will see persons with Autism/disABILITIES as contributors of our community each of them in their diverse/unique ways.

learning atmosphere, adults with autism/disABILITIES excel in the workplace, making the companies they work for profitable. Today they employ 7 bakers and packers with Autism/disABILITIES and their goal is employing 20 by 2020. Their mission is education and employment of young adults with autism while creating healthier and lighter versions of traditional treats.

This is our winning team In addition to bakers, they will soon employ packers, warehouse operators, maintenance crew, customer service reps and dispatchers. It’s a social revolution that gives job opportunities and hope to many adults with autism/disABILITIES in Miami. Through our success, we inspire other companies to follow similar paths. Society starts appreciating their capabilities. Miami Is Kind are the pioneers of the “I am like you” revolution. Miami is kind has demonstrated that with adequate instruction, and an enjoyable

Non-Anesthetic Dental Clinic For Dogs and Cats

Dog and cat teeth cleaning and periodontal disease

W

hy is Dog teeth cleaning so important? Well, let’s take a look. Puppies have 28 temporary teeth, 14 in the upper jaw and 14 in the lower jaw. These deciduous teeth erupt at about three to four weeks of age. Dogs have 42 permanent teeth, 20 on the top, and 22 on the bottom. These begin to emerge at about four months of age. Dogs have 6 permanent teeth that have 3 roots each, and 14 teeth that each has 2 roots. Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats and is entirely preventable with regular dog teeth cleaning. By three years of age, most dogs and cats have some evidence of periodontal disease. Unfortunately, other than bad breath, there are few signs of the disease process evident to the owner, and professional dental cleaning and periodontal therapy often comes too late to prevent extensive disease or to save teeth. As a result, periodontal disease is usually under-treated, and may cause multiple problems in the oral cavity and may be associated with damage to internal organs in some patients as they age. Non-Anesthetic Cat Teeth Cleaning Cats have 30 teeth once they reach adulthood, and taking care of all those teeth on their own isn’t easy and can be very expensive and even dangerous.

After the scaling, the teeth are polished to remove residual plaque and to smooth the tooth surface (which slows the regrowth of plaque and tartar). Then we rinse your cat’s mouth to remove any debris prior to a final inspection of your cat’s teeth.
