It was only two summers ago when Sasha Olsen started a project that changed her life. She could’ve never expected where an ordinary day, spent in her mom’s closet as Frida Kahlo, would lead her! Studying countless legends and trying on so many different roles, Sasha realized just how impactful her project had the potential to be.

W

elcome to Legends from Mom’s Closet, Sasha’s idea to get to know legendary people alongside other kids through reading, creativity, and dress-up! At first, biographies might not seem like the most interesting books to pick up, but to Sasha, you can put yourself in that person’s shoes and picture their life as your own. This

8

kiddos | June • July 2021

sounded like a lot of fun, which is what inspired her love for these real-life stories and setting a stage where she could get to know these legends and their careers even more. From a day experimenting as a Nobel prize-winning scientist to another running like an Olympic gold medalist, the possibilities are endless.

As a family, making education exciting for your kids might seem challenging, but it’s not at all.

Amidst our changing world during quarantine, Sasha published her own book, Legends from Mom’s Closet, based on her personal experiences “meeting” important legends like Billie Holiday and Marie Antoinette. She knew it couldn’t end there though, so she decided to continue her quest via social media. This opened up a portal of opportunities! Since starting her Instagram, Sasha has gained and spread knowledge with communities all over the world. It’s a platform built on learning and collaboration where you can find small tidbits of information, quotes, facts, illustrations, and more. Her goal is to show others how they, too, can be a part of this world she’s created. Sasha’s infinite amount of curiosity and desire to learn brought her to receiving the Pinnacle Award this year! This was her reminder that she was in control of building her own legendary life just like the rest of these iconic people.

As a family, making education exciting for your kids might seem challenging, but it’s not at all. Of course, there is always someone kids look up to or admire! We usually all have a legend we would love to meet one day. Well, why not connect with these role models in the comfort of your own home? And, it can all be sustainable too! There’s no need for new costumes, clothing, or accessories. You could make your own crown to dress up as the Queen of England or recreate an art piece in honor of your favorite artist, all while understanding more about how they came to their success. Getting crafty and

dressing up using what’s around the house is the best way to open your mind and let your imagination run wild. Considering the length of time kids have spent distance learning, reading and bringing these stories to life is an activity that’s enjoyable and interactive for everyone. That’s why Legends from Mom’s Closet’s mission can bring kids closer to their dream legend. You can find Sasha’s book online on Amazon and her website, and the continuation of it on Instagram @ legendsfrommomscloset. Jumping into this world with her might motivate your kids to think about who their favorite icons are and how their legendary lives will inspire them to build their own! k

very woman’s health journey is unique, and it’s not always easy to prioritize yourself. Virtual Summer S.T.E.A.M.

O

Maker Camp with Moonlighter FabLab

ne of the questions we are frequently asked is, “How do you run a hands-on STEAM camp over zoom?” It’s a valid question. With students feeling zoom fatigue during a year fraught with social isolation and other challenges, signing up for a virtual program may cause some hesitation. The difference with our program is that students are still learning by DOING, not by staring at a screen.

The virtual aspect is simply a tool to collaborate, all of the projects are still done by hand. Each week, campers ages 7-12 get a delivery to their door with a full toolbox, kit of materials, and set of supplies to build their projects. Most of the projects are open challenges where campers get to build their own idea rather than following a prescribed set of steps. This enables them to express their creativity, to think about what they want to make and experiment with how they will make it. From designing their own buildings, to engineering structures in space, planning their own startup, and creating their own games - there’s a new challenge each week to keep them inventing new things to improve the world! By having access to real tools and materials, they grow a sense of agency and are empowered by knowing that they can actually build their ideas and make a differ-

ence! Our pedagogical methods were featured on MakerEd and Make: Magazine and led to a national after school program on the new Maker Campus platform. So we once again invite all of the young makers to join us for a summer of limitless creativity! We’re bringing the makerspace back to your home where your children can make friends, learn new skills, build amazing things, and share them with the world! k Visit www.moonlighterfablab.org/learn/ camps to learn more.

Swimming Safety Tips for Summer Source: USA Swimming

P

laying in or around water is one of the joys of summer, but this treasured seasonal pastime comes with some serious risks. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As COVID-19 restrictions ease, many families will have informal gatherings and take trips to the beach, increasing the potential for children to have unsupervised access to water. Because of this, it’s important for children to take swimming lessons to learn water safety skills and create safer habits in and around water. As swimming lessons begin across the country, many are being conducted safely with COVID-19 precautions in place.

16

kiddos | June • July 2021

Protect your family’s safety around water this summer with these tips from the Make a Splash Tour, presented by Phillips 66 and the USA Swimming Foundation. Designate a Water Watcher and Closely Monitor Children. Designate a water watcher when you are in, on or around water. Watch all children and adolescents swimming or playing in or around water, even if they know how to swim. Keeping young children or inexperienced swimmers within arm’s length at all times can help ensure you’re able to provide assistance if and when it’s needed. Wear a Life Jacket. Anyone participating in any boating, paddling or towed water sports, regardless of swimming ability in pool

or open water situations, should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Preschool-aged children (5 years old and younger), who are not protected by touch supervision, in particular, should always wear a life jacket. Swimming aids and water toys – such as water wings, inflatable water wings and rings – are not intended to be lifesaving devices. Learn to Swim. Research has shown formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of childhood drowning by 88%. Through the annual Make a Splash Tour, the USA Swimming Foundation, with the support of Phillips 66, encourages children’s swim lessons. By equipping your child with the skill of swimming, you’ll open doors to a lifetime of safety, fun, fitness and even employment opportunities.

fun

Find two identical pictures While lessons progressively teach a variety of swimming strokes, some of the most important things swimmers learn – even in beginner classes – are breath control and how to float. These basic skills are essential for staying above water should someone find himself or herself unable to touch or too tired to swim to safety. Children can participate in swimming lessons before they can walk, and parent-child swim lessons provide bonding opportunities along with water safety education.

Swim in Designated Areas and Obey Posted Signs and Flags. Ropes, buoys and flags in larger bodies of water like lakes or oceans are commonly used to mark off safe swimming areas and provide visual cues about changes in depth, underwater surfaces and currents. Teach children what these signs and markers mean and that they’re in place as safety tools, not toys to play with or float on.

Make safety a priority for your summer water fun. For more information, including swim lesson providers in your area, visit usaswimming.org/makeasplash.

Answer: 4, 10.

Learn CPR. If the unthinkable does happen, knowing how to perform CPR allows you to take immediate action, which has been shown to significantly better the outcome for children with submersion injuries. In the time it takes for paramedics to arrive, you could save someone’s life. Seconds count; the quicker CPR is started, the better the chances of recovery. There are many places that offer CPR training, including community organizations and nonprofit groups. Remember to keep your certification current once you have completed the initial requirements. k

A special day dedicated to Dad with all the good stuff!

H

ere are 5 ideas for a memorable holiday that include all the right ingredients: good food, good fun, exercise, the great outdoors, some laughs and tons of love.

1

Cards and Crafts There’s no need to get to the store when you have supplies at home! Have everyone in the family make Dad a card or poster from scratch. Have fun with it and get creative! Draw pictures, cut out words from old Kiddos magazines and paste them on, or make handprints with paint. Write him a meaningful note about how much you love him. When you’re done, hide the card or poster someplace he won’t find it until you’re ready to present it to him.

WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

2

Awesome Sides Nothing goes better with grilling than some delicious sides! Invite the kids to help you cook (and freshen up on their at-home math and science skills by measuring and mixing ingredients). We love the idea of homemade mac and cheese! Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add 1 (8 ounce) box of elbow macaroni into the boiling water, stirring occasionally until cooked through but firm, around 8 minutes. Drain. Melt ¼ cup butter in a saucepan over medium heat; stir in ¼ cup all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon salt, and ground black pepper to taste until smooth, about 5 minutes. Slowly pour 2 cups milk into the butterflour mixture while continuously stirring until it’s smooth and bubbling, about 5 minutes. Add 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese to milk mixture and stir until cheese is melted, 2 to 4 minutes. Fold macaroni into cheese sauce until coated. And voila, the perfect homemade mac and cheese to go with any barbecue or Dad’s favorite dish for his special day!

3

Catch Me if You Can Play a game of catch outside or take a spin around the yard to catch one another in a game of freeze tag! The game doesn’t matter, it’s all about fun and movement. Want to go the extra mile? Who ever gets tagged has to list 3 amazing qualities about Dad!

4

Got Sun? If the weather is nice, enjoy a dip in the pool together as a family. Play some classic games like Marco Polo or volleyball. No pool? No problem! Get creative with ways to cool off like running through the sprinkler or using the hose.

Camping Chez Le Père (at Dad’s) Enjoy a beautiful family staycation in the comfort of your own yard! Pitch the tent, light the bonfire and roast up some marshmallows for s’mores. Share your favorite memories about Dad around the fireplace, or name the top 3 reasons you really love and appreciate him. Bring out the cards everyone made, or poster, and present them to him to close out the evening. For extra mood-boosting, string some lights around the yard or decorate! You don’t need a fancy restaurant or outing to show Dad just how much you love and appreciate him. A simple but thoughtful day spent home with the family is the best gift you can give him for Father’s Day. k

MDPLS Summer Reading Challenge 2021

S

Open to all ages from June 5 - August 7, 2021. This year’s event theme “Tails and Tales" ign up now for the Summer Reading Challenge!

Sign up for the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s annual Summer Reading Challenge! Every 30 minutes spent reading or listening to a book and each library program or event you attend earns you an entry into a drawing to win prizes including a Butterfly World special gift pass, two tickets to any HistoryMiami Museum City Tours Walking Tours, Miami Marlins autographed memorabilia, one-year family membership to the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Wendy’s gift cards and much more. The more you read, the greater your chances of winning! Participating in the Summer Reading Challenge as a family is a fun way to encourage reading and help students avoid the “summer slide,” the loss of

skills gained during the school year. Additionally, children who see parents and adults in their lives reading tend to read more and build healthier reading habits. You can earn more chances to win by attending any library program. Every event you attend gets you an additional entry into the drawing. Just make sure to add it to your online reading and activity log. Avoid the “Summer Slide” Children and teens who aren't actively reading or participating in other learning activities during the summer can succumb to the "summer slide," losing out on valuable academic skills that were gained during the school year. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning have made it even harder to retain these gains.

To keep those skills finely tuned and avoid the “summer slide,” all you need is a little bit of practice. Reading for just 20 minutes a day, listening to books and exploring new types of materials like magazines, can keep you on track. Best of all, you can access all these materials for free with your library card! Adults who join in also provide an added benefit to their children, who tend to read more and build healthier reading habits, as a result. Parents can also help their children stay engaged and continue learning through the MDPLS Online Homework Help & Tutoring Program.

Free, 30 minute one-on-one virtual tutoring sessions with certified teachers are available by appointment throughout the summer from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays through August 21 to all K-12 students who reside in Miami Dade County. exhibitions

A new special exhibition at Frost Science in Downtown Miami While the two groups are closely related, pterosaurs were not dinosaurs! These flying reptiles were actually the first vertebrate animals to evolve powered flight, diversifying into more than 150 species of all shapes and sizes spreading across the planet over a period of 150 million years until they went extinct 66 million years ago.

F

or as long as dinosaurs walked the Earth, flying animals called pterosaurs ruled the skies. They ranged from the size of a sparrow to that of a two-seater plane. These close relatives of dinosaurs are the focus of the new summer exhibition at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs. Presented by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, this is the largest exhibition about these flying reptiles ever mounted in the United States.

As you journey through the Mesozoic era you’ll encounter a variation of pterosaurs from pint-size to truly gargantuan through full-size models including the colossal Tropeognathus mesembrinus, with a wingspan of more than 25 feet, soaring overhead and the sparrow-size Nemicolopterus crypticus, with a wingspan of 10 inches, to a full-size model of a 33-foot-wingspan Quetzalcoatlus northropi—the largest pterosaur species known to date.

Visitors of the exhibition will dig into the fossilization process, discover research by scientists and leading paleontologists around the world and view rare pterosaur fossil casts from Italy, Germany, China, the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil. Interactive experiences that immerse visitors in the mechanics of pterosaur flight will also bring the ancient reptiles to life, including a motion sensor-based interactive that allows you to use your body to “pilot” two species of pterosaurs through virtual prehistoric landscapes. k

Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs is on view through Monday, September 6, 2021. Admission is included with all museum admission tickets. Learn more and buy tickets at www.frostscience.org.

This summer, Area Stage Company is offering two exciting theatre education experiences.

irst, Broadway Bites Musical Theatre Summer Camp is available for ages 5-18. These are week-long performance intensives where students will hone their singing, dancing, and acting skills by working with our experienced instructors. The program will run for 10 one-week sessions this summer: June 14th through August 20th, 2021. Students can opt to attend one week, all 10 weeks, or any number in between. Each week is a new experience, focusing on a different show from the musical theatre cannon. Throughout the week, students will learn selections from the chosen musical and perform them at an open showcase for friends and family on Friday. Past years have included mini productions of Beauty and the Beast, High School Musical, Frozen, Shrek the Musical, Aladdin, Into the Woods, and more! Students will be taught the core principals of theatre including collaboration, professionalism, and discipline, while

also improving on their technical skills. Students should expect to dance, act, and sing every day. Sessions will include foundational instruction as well as time devoted to learning material specific to that week’s performance. June 14th - August 20th, 2021 Group 1: Ages 5-9, M-F 8:30 am – 12:30 pm Group 2: Ages 10+, M-F 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm If you are more interested in being part of a full production, join Mary Poppins Jr.! Your favorite practically perfect nanny takes center stage in this Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious adventure based on the award-winning Broadway musical and classic Walt Disney film. Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins JR. is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs and breathtaking dance numbers. Students participating in this production should expect

5 questions to kickstart summer reading conversations 1. Look at the cover. What do you think this book is about? 2. How did this story make you feel? 3. Who is your favorite character? Why? 4. What did you learn? 5. If you could ask the author anything, what would it be?

intense, but fun rehearsal days. Though the main focus of these sessions is the rehearsal and production of Mary Poppins Jr., participants will also gain a deep understanding of theatre as a process. Professionalism will be strongly emphasized with the cast in addition to education in the areas of acting, singing, and dancing. Students will gain technical prowess in these three core areas while also learning what is expected of an actor throughout the rehearsal process for a large musical. Participants should be prepared to work hard, have fun, and jump in with both feet!
