I think seasons have more importance in our lives than we might think. The colors, well... I love orange! The weather, even we don't get to wear too much of it, that perfect flannel sweater is there somewhere in our closet, and the season of giving, new beginnings and change, flow in the air. The Thanksgiving Dinner Table 10 topics to dig into, alongside turkey (or tofurky) & stuffing WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

T

he holidays can be a really exciting time, especially for children. But, the hustle and bustle of the end of the year festivities can leave parents feeling stressed and anxious. Take the opportunity this Thanksgiving to de-stress, share lots of laughs, be present and bond as a family with these 10 dinner table topics! 1. Thanks-giving. It may seem obvious, but do you really go around the table and discuss what you’re

8

kiddos | October • November 2018

thankful for? Give thanks! Take turns, and each name and describe one to three things you’re really grateful for this year, or always. This is a very heart-warming way to enjoy dinner, to learn about one another, to bring love and joy to the table, and to keep it circulating. 2. If you had… This is a fun way to get to know each other and share some warm fuzzies. Ask a question like, “If you had the opportunity to make the world a better place, what

would you do or who would you help?” Allow each person to answer and elaborate. Take turns going around the table. 3. Name one thing. Have each person at the table name one thing about everyone else that is interesting, unique or special. Maybe there’s something about that person you haven’t told them, or shared. This is a sure-fire way to get those feel-good-vibes going and boost everyone’s confidence.

Enjoying each other's company, getting to know one another on a deeper level

hand, perhaps you’ll get a good laugh at some of the silly answers! Kids say the darnedest things, right? 9. Charades. Have each person imitate someone else at the table, without saying who. See if you can guess who they are pretending to be! This one is great for giggles! Whoever guesses correctly gets a turn next. 10. Turkey Time! Have everyone go around and do their best Turkey sound! This one is light and fun, reminding us that life can be full of play and doesn't have to be serious all the time.

4. Thanksgiving Feast. Ask everyone what their favorite food is for the holidays and elaborate on what they would add to Thanksgiving dinner or dessert that would make it even more delicious for them! Maybe next year you can add it to the menu! 5. TBT. Have the kids ask the older generations what their favorite part of Thanksgiving or the holiday season was growing up. This is a great way to learn about rituals and traditions and perhaps keep them going - or start them back up again - for years to come.

history, who would you be and why?” (Think: painter, president, writer, hero, scientist, etc.) or “If you had to wear the same outfit every day, what would it be?” “If you could pick your own name, what would it have been?” 8. What’s the hardest thing? Ask each other, what is the hardest thing about being a child, or a parent, or a grown up? While it seems simple, some really deep feelings can come up. On the other

While Thanksgiving is a time we strive to be thankful and to remember all of the blessings in our lives, remember that you can still have fun while doing that. Kids get this concept; as adults, we may have a harder time with it. Enjoying each other’s company, getting to know one another on a deeper level, and laughing and playing is just another way to learn to cherish one another for the unique and special individuals that you all are. After some full-body-bellylaughs together, you’ll all be left with a swelling heart, overflowing with love and appreciation for one another and the priceless bond of family. k

6. Memories. Have each person name their favorite holiday they have spent together and explain why. This will help everyone get to know more about the other, what their passions or interests are, and how to continue to nurture that feeling of fulfillment. 7. Fun Facts. Play around a little! Have some fun and be creative while really getting to know everyone on a deeper level. “If you had to eat the same thing every day, what would it be?” “If you could be any famous person, alive or from

W

e love dreaming up new healthy ways for families to enjoy Halloween. But let’s face it. Candy is part of the season. Kids are encouraged to trick or treat at school, at local community events, and then door-to-door. It can be great fun. However, if you’re not careful, your child might eat their own weight in candy (not fun). Too much candy can be a nightmare for your child’s dental health. There are smarter ways to celebrate, and you don’t have to ban trick-or-treating for your kids. Here are our tips for navigating the frightful Halloween season: Bad Versus Better Candy. The worst candies are sticky and gummy varieties because they are harder to clean away from teeth. Also, be careful with hard candies as they can actually break a tooth. Chocolate, and in particular dark chocolate, can be a safer choice. In addition there are several nut and fruit bars on the market which are lower in

sugar than most candy. Just be sure to check the ingredients on the label. Avoid extra sugar, overly processed foods, and chemicals. Healthy Snack Choices. The bacteria in our mouths consume the sugar in sweet treats and release acid, which can lead to tooth decay. A small amount of candy at Halloween may be fine, but there are many smart alternatives – fresh fruit likes apples and oranges, nuts, and veggies like carrots or sugar snap peas. Halloween is also a great time to prepare healthy treats with your kids. For example, try devilishly decorated deviled eggs, blood orange punch, pumpkin pancakes, or healthy Halloween cookies. Brushing and Flossing. Halloween provides an opportunity to remind kids about the importance of brushing and flossing. The goal is to minimize damage to teeth that can be caused by sugar. If your kids eat candy, be sure

Switch-Witchery. The Switch Witch is similar to the Tooth Fairy but for Halloween. It works like this: After all the trick-or-treating is done (and your kids have enjoyed some of their candy,) everyone gets ready for a visit from the Switch Witch. The friendly Witch pays a visit after bedtime and switches out bags of candy for a prize. The more candy a kid sets aside for the Witch, the better their prize will be. Be sure to tell your kids the story of the Switch Witch before Halloween so that they look forward to her arrival. Our final bit of advice is to have fun, be safe, and be healthy. Oh, and say hello to the Switch Witch if you see her. k

Drama: Is It Happening To You? Advice For Teens Who Are Experiencing Bullying SOURCE: PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center

D

rama. Bullying. Teasing. Harassment. No matter what you call it, it hurts. If you’re pushed, hit, or your things are ripped off or trashed, it can hurt physically. If you’re ignored by friends or cruel things are posted about you online, it can hurt emotionally. If it happens to you, you’ve probably asked yourself, “Why me?” You know how painful it is to be treated this way. So seriously, what can you do? A LOT! You can take back control, but you don’t have to do it on your own. Remember, bullying is never your fault and you have the right to make it stop. Begin taking back control by talking to your parent or an adult you can trust. Then check out these three steps for handling the situation at school. 1. Know That You Are Not Alone “When I walk into the classroom, all the girls start whispering with each other and laughing.” -Jenny, 7th grade Ever feel like this only happens to you? It doesn’t. Unfortunately, bullying happens to a lot of kids. It happens in small schools, large schools, rural schools, and city schools. It can happen in preschool, high school, and every school in between. It happens in Australia, Argentina, and all around the globe. Sometimes people say that bullying is just part of growing up or that you should just “deal with it” and it will go away. This is NOT true. Even though bullying happens to a lot of kids, that doesn’t ever make it right. No one deserves to be bullied, everyone deserves respect, and everyone has a right to feel safe at school.

16

kiddos | October • November 2018

No matter what you call it, bullying is painful. But you don’t have to go through it alone! There are people who will help you, and it is your right to be safe 2. Be a Self-advocate “Self-Advocate? Seriously, what does that even mean?” -Nick, 6th grade Being a “self-advocate” means speaking up for yourself, telling people what you need, and taking action. Bullying can be stopped, but you need a plan. First, think about what you can do to change your situation, and then make an action plan. You can download a copy of PACER’s Student Action Plan from PACER.org/bullying/resources/ publications. In the plan:

• Write down what is happening to you, when and where it takes place, and who is involved.

• Include what you would like to change, how things could be changed, and what would help you gain control over the situation.

• List your role in this action plan, who else should be involved, and what they could do. Share this information with your parents and an adult you trust at school.

What of the 2-10 images are not the fragments of picture 1?

3. Assert Your Rights “We are told over and over again to tell an adult. I tried that at my school and was told that’s just how kids in middle school act.” -Jack, 8th grade student with Asperger’s Every student has the right to feel safe at school. If one adult isn’t able to help you, don’t give up! It is your right to talk with another adult, such as a parent. When you do speak to a teacher, an administrator, or a person you trust at school:

• Share all of the information in your action plan. • Ask: “What can be done so I feel safe and other kids do, too?”

• Tell adults that there are laws outlining the school’s responsibility in handling bullying situations. You may have additional protections under federal law when the bullying is about: Race, color, or national origin Sex Religion Disability State and local laws may provide additional protections on other bases, including sexual orientation. Some adults may not know this, so clue them in and keep talking until someone understands. k

Solution: 4,6,8

Founded in 2006, PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center actively leads social change to prevent childhood bullying, so that all youth are safe and supported in their schools, communities, and online. For more information visit PACER.org/Bullying
