3 Steps to Your First Family Fishing Adventure WRITTEN BY: Stephanie Vatalaro

S

pring is such an exciting time of year. The weather gets warmer, the days get longer, and summer fun is closer than ever. But with busy schedules and distracting screens, it’s easy to let the season slip by. It’s no secret that getting outside is key to making the most of spring, but it’s also a great way to bond as a family. Learning a new outdoor activity together with your kids can create lasting memories. One of my favorite ways to enjoy family time is with a traditional pastime that’s

8

kiddos | February • March 2020

making a comeback — fishing. Growing up in Florida, I’ve always loved the water. Now that I’m a mom, I love sharing the activity with my daughter, Isla. But even if you’re a first-timer, fishing is an easy, kid-friendly activity that you can bond over with just a few beginner steps. Step 1: Find a fishing spot. Going fishing doesn’t mean you have to pack up for a long drive far away from home. Places to fish are closer than you think, even in the city. Parks and canals

are great locations for your first fishing excursion because they’re close to home and often have other attractions like walking trails. Tamiami Canal, located right in Miami, is a popular destination for new and experienced anglers alike. You can also find tons of places to fish throughout Florida with an interactive map at www.TakeMeFishing.org. When selecting a family-friendly fishing spot, look for amenities like play areas, easy parking and picnic facilities as well as safe water and boat access.

When you’re ready to cast, unlock your line and hold it with your fingers. Then, swing your rod in an arc, letting go of the line at the peak. If you feel a fish tugging, point your rod skyward. Begin reeling in your catch by slowly lowering your rod until it reaches a 45-degree angle. Return your rod to a vertical position and repeat the process as needed.

Step 2: Gather your bait and tackle. There are two primary types of bait: natural and artificial. It’s up to you which to use, although beginners often have better luck with natural bait, as it tends to be a better fish attractant. Earthworms are a great choice because they’re easy to put on a hook and don’t require any sophisticated technique to lure a bite. When it comes to gear, simple is best for newbies. To help limit line tangles, choose a kid-friendly starter rod-andreel combo designed for smaller hands. Some other essentials you’ll need

include fishing line, hooks, bobbers, sinkers and bait. Pro tip: To keep kids engaged, bring snacks and games to pull out during downtime. Step 3: Rig your line and cast.

With these simple steps, you’ve already got the basics for a family fishing adventure. Before you hit the water, remember the most important item an angler can carry is their fishing license. That’s because fishing license sales provide critical funding for the conservation programs that protect our waterways. You can get your license anytime at www.TakeMeFishing.org and learn even more beginner tips. Give it a shot, and you might just find you’re…hooked! k

Rigs are the combination of hooks, sinkers, bobbers and other add-ons to your fishing line. To begin rigging, tie a hook on the end of your line. One easy knot for first-timers is called the improved clinch knot. Then, pinch one or two small split shot sinkers to your main line six to 12 inches from the hook. Finally, clip a circle bobber to the rig three to four feet above the hook. Detailed instructions are available on www.TakeMeFishing.org.

About Stephanie A lifelong angler, Stephanie Vatalaro works to introduce newcomers to the water as senior vice president of marketing & communications for the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation and its Take Me Fishing initiative. Outside of work, you’re likely to find her fishing and boating with her family. About the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) RBFF is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase participation in recreational fishing and boating, thereby protecting and restoring the nation's aquatic natural resources. The organization’s Take Me Fishing™ initiative is designed to help boaters and anglers of all ages and experience levels learn, plan and equip for a day on the water. Intentional Wellness for the Entire Family WRITTEN BY: Care Resource

A

How to Incorporate Healthy Habits for a Fuller Life

t Care Resource, our providers value your family’s well-being and consider how to maximize your health on a holistic level. They understand that healthy habits may be sacrificed for work and school responsibilities. Here are some components of wholesome living to consider this March, National Nutrition Month and throughout the year. “Children are more likely to include healthier foods in their diet if they are consistently exposed, so avoid having sodas, fruit juice, and junk food at home. If these are not available, your children are less likely to consume them on a daily basis. Encourage your child to eat fruits and vegetables by offering them in different forms. Last but not least, physical activity can take any form—hold a dance party or jumping jack contest with your kids!” —Gloria Cabral, RD, LDN, Registered Dietitian at Care Resource Healthy living is about more than just a fresh dish. A nutritious meal is also about the preparation. Take time to cook with your children, setting aside simple tasks they can complete with confidence. Preparing a meal as a family is more fulfilling, not to mention easier! Involving your children in meal prep empowers them to cook for themselves later on in life. During food prep, show your children how to minimize waste. Encourage them to envision the leftovers of one meal as a beginning for another. Lead by example. When shopping, direct your children’s attention to food labels. Together, begin to identify harmful ingredients. Encourage them always to choose fresh or frozen produce over processed options in order to diminish chance of diet-related diseases. As we

10

kiddos | February • March 2020

Make time for emotional wellness. When you cook together, your children may see that quality time is a worthy investment and can be just as enjoyable as watching TV or playing video games. Another way to integrate behavioral health into your family’s daily life is by taking time in the morning to discuss what you are looking forward to that day. After work and school, discuss the “highs and lows” of the day. These moments of quality time, reflection, and appreciation are important for maintaining our emotional health, an essential element of overall wellness.

lead by example, making healthier choices with our children’s wellness in mind, they maintain these habits themselves. Supplement your nutritional health with physical wellness. When we prioritize wellness in as many parts of our lives as we can, we will have a better result. In addition to eating nutritious produce, lean protein, healthy fats and whole grains, we should set aside time for physical activity. Perhaps you and your children can take a walk after eating or stretch together as a way to wind down after school and work.

Let your kids have a say. When shopping, tune into your child’s specific needs. What do they like to eat? This could also be a chance to introduce them to healthier alternatives for their cravings. Including children in the process of choosing their food encourages them to exercise choice when it comes to food. Remind them that a healthy lifestyle does not mean no treats—rather, it means indulging in the right treats that are lower in sugar and harmful ingredients. Savor spring break. Take advantage of the spring break vacation to slow down. Shake up your natural routine and incorporate surprises, like an afternoon of baking healthier desserts made with ingredients like sugar-free apple sauce or honey, instead of processed sugar, or fruit and nuts. k

Dealing with Lice Made Easy

I

f you found yourself with unexpected and unwelcomed guests this holiday season you weren’t alone! We’re not talking about house guests…. we’re talking about head guests, head lice to be exact. Though we seldom worry about the likelihood of giving or receiving head lice, they’re easy to contract and difficult to get rid of. Any time there is close contact between two

or more people who have been exposed to lice, the risk of an outbreak climbs significantly. That means you may want to rethink those snuggles for Valentine’s Day or Spring Break selfies. The good news is you can count on Lice Troopers to get rid of the lice infestation swiftly and efficiently. They have certified lice specialists on their team who treat mild to severe cases of head lice infestations with all-natural lice treatments. Those with children will find it especially comforting to know that they can stop by one of several treatment clinics in South Florida prior to sending their child back to school from Spring Break camp and receive a thorough lice screening to ensure their child returns lice free.

The company also offers Lice Alerts for regional outbreaks safeguarding locals against potential infestations. The website: www.licetroopers.com features a sign-up option for anyone – school, doctor, or parent to register for Lice Alerts, notifying through text as well as email. This two-way service not only informs individuals promptly when there is an infestation in their area but also receives anonymous tips from those who may know about an outbreak first-hand. With the aid of Lice Troopers you can stop nits and bugs in their tracks and stay lice free all year long! k

What Is My Parenting Style? Four Types of Parenting Written by: Bright Horizons

Your parenting style refers to the combination of strategies that you use to raise your children.

• Their discipline style is the opposite • • •

O

ne of the interesting things about being a parent is that there is great variation in how we raise our children. At the same time, there are many commonalities from one parent to another. In fact, there is enough similarity that researchers have tried to group parents into four common parenting styles. Your parenting style refers to the combination of strategies that you use to raise your children. The work of Diane Baumrind in the 1960s created one commonly-referenced categorization of parenting styles. The four Baumrind parenting styles have distinct names and characteristics: • Authoritarian or Disciplinarian • Permissive or Indulgent • Uninvolved • Authoritative These Baumrind parenting styles are United States-centric and it is not clear how well these styles describe parents

16

kiddos | February • March 2020

of strict. They have limited or no rules and mostly let children figure problems out on their own. Communication is open but these parents let children decide for themselves rather than giving direction. Parents in this category tend to be warm and nurturing. Expectations are typically minimal or not set by these parents.

Uninvolved Parenting Uninvolved parents give children a lot of freedom and generally stay out of their way. Some parents may make a conscious decision to parent in this way, while others are less interested in parenting or unsure of what to do.

cross-culturally. Each parenting style varies in at least four areas: discipline style, communication, nurturance, and expectations. Baumrind Parenting Styles: Four Types of Parenting Authoritarian Parenting Authoritarian parents are often thought of as disciplinarians.

• They use a strict discipline style • • •

with little negotiation possible. Punishment is common. Communication is mostly one way: from parent to child. Rules usually are not explained. Parents with this style are typically less nurturing. Expectations are high with limited flexibility.

Permissive Parenting Permissive or Indulgent parents mostly let their children do what they want, and offer limited guidance or direction. They are more like friends than parents.

• No particular discipline style is utilized. • • •

An uninvolved parent lets a child mostly do what he wants, probably out of a lack of information or caring. Communication is limited. This group of parents offers little nurturing. There are few or no expectations of children.

Authoritative Parenting Authoritative parents are reasonable and nurturing, and set high, clear expectations. Children with parents who demonstrate this style tend to be self-disciplined and think for themselves. This style is thought to be most beneficial to children.

• Disciplinary rules are clear and the

reasons behind them are explained.

• Communication is frequent and • •

appropriate to the child’s level of understanding. Authoritative parents are nurturing. Expectations and goals are high but stated clearly. Children may have input into goals.

Find Two Identical Images, Only Two Are What is My Parenting Style? Few of us fit neatly into one single parenting style, but rather raise children using a combination of styles. Think of the four styles as a continuum instead of four distinct ways to parent. Ideally, we think about our children and what they need from us at specific points in time. For example, while a parent might not typically adopt an authoritarian parenting style, there might be times in a child’s life when that style is needed. Or you might know an authoritarian parent who is nurturing, contrary to the description above. Factors in How Children "Turn Out" While it is easier for the family when both parents practice the same style of parenting, some research shows that if at least one parent is authoritative, that is better for the child than having two parents with the same, less effective style. And of course, there are more influences on who children become than just parenting style. Some of the many other factors impacting a child’s development include these elements:

• The child’s temperament and how it “fits” with the parents.

• A teachers’ style of working with children and

the match of teaching style to parenting style.

• The influence of a child’s peer group.

For more than 30 years, Bright Horizons® early education centers and preschools have been helping children around the world develop confidence and a passion for learning. Bright Horizons is committed to the field of early education and to practices that guide each child’s social, physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Answer: 6 and 10.

Reflecting on where you fit on the spectrum of parenting styles can be helpful. Taking that one step further: know that any of us with any style at any point in time could benefit from the selfreflection that typically comes from participating in a parenting class. Talking with other parents and a facilitator can be helpful and reassuring. k

Sweet, luscious Snacks for Loved Ones

V

Valentine’s Day eats and treats

alentine’s Day naturally brings thoughts of hearts, flowers, sweetness and love. Because it also occurs during American Heart Month, it’s a perfect opportunity to start taking care of your own heart and the hearts of loved ones. This year, it can be easy to share in the fun of Valentine’s Day by serving those you love with sweet, seasonal treats. For example, these Frosted Watermelon Cutouts make for ideal snacks for children and adults alike whether it’s an after-school treat or a sweet dessert with just three ingredients, heart-shaped cookie cutters and minimal time spent in the kitchen. If you’re really looking to impress your kiddos, family and friends this Watermelon and Chocolate Dessert Board calls for creativity and plenty of tasty morsels like berries, cashews, almonds and dark chocolate. Without any baking or cooking required, simply spread out the ingredients for a platter that’s just as visually appealing as it is appetizing. Both recipes include the benefits of watermelon, which boasts plenty of vitamin C to boost the immune system’s defenses as a cholesterol-free, fat-free and sodium-

free food. Plus, watermelon draws its red color from the powerful antioxidant lycopene (12.7 mg per serving), which may help protect cells from damage, and the healthy treat is American Heart Association Heart-Check Certified with just 80 calories per serving, making it the perfect centerpiece for Valentine’s Day recipes. Frosted Watermelon Cutouts • 1 seedless watermelon, cut into 1/2-3/4-inch thick slices • 4 brownie bites • 1 cup frosting (any flavor) Using heart-shaped cookie cutters, cut shapes out of watermelon slices or simply use cut watermelon wedges, if desired. Top heart shapes with brownie bites and add frosting as desired. Watermelon and Chocolate Dessert Board Servings: 6-8 • 1/2 medium seedless watermelon, cut into wedges and cubes • 1 cup fresh raspberries • 1 cup fresh red cherries • 1 cup strawberries, trimmed and halved • 1/4 cup dried cranberries • 1/3 cup roasted, salted cashews • 1 cup chocolate covered almonds

• 1 bar dark chocolate, broken into squares • 1 cup coconut chips • mint leaves, for garnish On serving board, arrange watermelon in center and surround with raspberries, cherries, strawberries, cranberries, cashews, almonds, chocolate and coconut chips. Scatter mint leaves around board for garnish. k

traditions

Sweet Surprises for the Whole Family WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

W

ith the holidays quickly approaching, now is a great time to revisit, reconsider, revamp and sweeten the pot on the traditions we hold near and dear to us. Nothing says “I love you” and “you’re important to me” more than a thoughtful and unexpected surprise... in their drawers, around the house, or in a jar! Love Notes Abound Shower your family with love and adoration by slipping sweet love notes around the house! You can use them to show your gratitude, express your feelings, or share positive affirmations with your loved ones. Love notes are such a special surprise and are so much fun to receive. In today’s modern family, everyone is always on the go, go, go! Love notes are a creative way to let everyone know they’re thought of and loved unconditionally, always. They’re a nice way to bring everyone into the present moment and forget about the hustle bustle for just a moment. It’s a winwin for both the giver and receiver: everyone gets to feel good.

The New Hide-and-Seek Get creative with your love notes and make it a game! Not only is this a great surprise to receive, it’s super fun to create and hide the notes! Sprinkle a few love notes in your hubby’s sock drawer or your kids’ backpacks. The sky is the limit on this game! Tape pictures and notes inside cabinets. Stick an “I love you” heart in the fridge for someone to find. You can be really creative with this new tradition. See who can find the most notes! A few notes weren‘t found? Great! They’ll make someone’s day in the future. Baking Fun Whip up some lovely pancakes! Or anything else your family enjoys. You can use red or pink food coloring in the batter, shape pancakes in a heart, surround them with whip cream or strawberries... whatever your hearts desire. Nothing says QT like cooking and sharing a meal.

Family Coupon Book There are many versions of the Coupon Book out there. For the family, create a book where everyone gets to pick out something special to them. Give away some free hugs, date nights (either mom and dad alone, or a date night with parent and child), stay up late nights and maybe even a toy surprise! Massages for mom or dad, movie nights for the whole family and crafts for the kids. Utilize those things you know are personal, important or special to your family. Gratitude Jar With Valentine’s Day symbolizing love and connection, it’s the perfect time to create your gratitude jar and begin a ritual with your family. Have everyone fill the jar with notes about what makes each of you special, how much you love one another, and all the things you’re grateful for. Open the jar each year on Valentine’s Day and drop in a few more notes! It’s always nice to be reminded of how valuable you are to your family. And how much love you all share together. Pop one out to read anytime you need a lift-me-up These are just a few ways to show your family how much love and care there is between you all. The possibilities of different ideas and ways to play with love notes are endless. Have some fun! And make it a new tradition in your family. You can take turns hiding notes, writing notes and finding notes! Just remember... the whole point is to feel good and share love! There are no rules, no restrictions and no limit to your creativity. k

Zoo Miami Opens Dinosaurs Live! On view until June 14, 2020

A zoo-wide Jurassic adventure with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs at every turn! This exhibit is nothing short of amazing! Guests will be surrounded by several other dinosaurs, along the zoo walkways, including a couple of Coelophysis, very fast runners with curved necks that resemble long legged birds, a Deinonychus slashing through its fallen prey and another watching on as guests pass by. On display will also be an impressively horned Diabloceratops, and an interactive photo opportunity with a Pachyrhinosaurus.

D

inosaurs LIVE! presented by Metro By T-mobile. The new exhibit at Zoo Miami will take zoo guests back to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth, with more than 20 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs and displays that look like the real animals that once existed! Prepare to see these extinct creatures come back to life in an extraordinary outdoor Jurassic adventure.

Among the dinosaurs on exhibit, guests will be thrilled to discover favorites like a fully grown “spitting” Dilophosaurus, fast moving carnivores named after its two crests, and of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, whose name means “Tyrant Lizard King” due to its size and power. The baby T-Rex looks as vicious as the grown one.

32

Other dinosaurs may be easily recognized by visitors, including the Quetzalcoatlus, one of the largest flying creatures to ever exist, the Triceratops family complete with a nest of hatchlings and the Apatosaurus is reminiscent of the famed Brontosaurus (he’s a close relative)! The Stegosaurus meaning “roofed lizard” is another well-known animal with broad bony plates from its neck down to its back, with the tip of its tail bearing long spikes for battle. kiddos | February • March 2020

There will be so much to see, learn and experience at this one-of-a-kind exhibit by Billings Productions, a leading provider of animatronic dinosaurs. You may have to come more than once to take it all in!

Guests may be amazed to find dinosaurs they never knew about, including some with fascinating features, like the Pachycephalosaurus – whose name means “thick headed lizard”. Its thick skull was surrounded by blunt bony knobs and spikes, making it stand out from the other dinosaurs. The Suchomimus is identified by its resemblance to the crocodile and you’ll find him lurking in the water. The Edmontonia stands out as an armored herbivore with its bulky, broad and tank like figure. The Megalosaurus, resembling the T-rex, was also a large carnivore, weighing as much as a Black rhino.

Dinosaurs LIVE! is included with Zoo admission and will be on view until June 14, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. k

“We believe our guests’ fascination with dinosaurs will bring them to the zoo. Many people know more about dinosaurs than animals that are still present today. We invite visitors to feed their dinosaur fixation by visiting Dinosaurs Live! at Zoo Miami,” said Zoo Miami Director Carol Kruse.

Zoo Miami is located at 12400 SW 152 street; Miami, FL 33177. General zoo admission is: $22.95/adult, plus tax and $18.95/child (3-12) plus tax. Children under two, zoo members, and parking are free. Zoo Miami’s hours are 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Ticket booths close at 4 p.m. For more information please visit www.zoomiami.org

census

Census 101:

E

Your Family Counts Too!

very 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a nationwide count to determine the number of people living in the United States, and everyone in your household should be included. The Census provides the basis for reapportioning Congressional seats and distributing billions of dollars in federal funding for schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs. Starting in mid-March, Florida residents will receive a postcard in the mail from the Census Bureau containing a unique number that encourages participation online. There is also a phone number to call, which provides response opportunities in 13 languages. However, there are often many questions associated with how children and families should be counted. Below is a list of scenarios your family could encounter when filling out the Census.

• Children attending boarding school, living away from home but below

college age/level, should be counted at their parents’ or guardians’ home address. High school students who live with their parents and attend school during the day should also be counted at home. However, if you have a student living at a residential school for people with disabilities, they should be counted at their school address.

• If a child is away at college in the

United States, they should be counted at their school address -- whether it’s a dormitory or off-campus housing. College students who are U.S. citizens but living outside the country while attending college shouldn’t be counted in the Census. However, if a student lives at home while they are attending college, they should be counted at home.

• Foster children should be counted at

the residence where they live and sleep most of the time. If there isn’t a clear place, those children should be counted where they are staying on Census Day, which is April 1, 2020.

• Pregnant women often wonder

how their new bundle of joy should be counted. Babies born on or before Census Day should be counted where they live and sleep most of the time, even if they are still in the hospital on April 1, 2020. Babies born after Census Day are should not be counted in this Census.

• Children in shared custody situations

should be counted at the place where they live and sleep most of the time. Parents should communicate with each other to determine who is counting that child to be assured they aren’t counted twice. However, if the child lives with one parent 50 percent of the time and the other parent 50 percent of the time, the child is counted where they are living on Census Day. As we embark on a new decade, MiamiDade County urges all parents and teachers to discuss the Census in their social circles – making sure their friends and family know about it before their invitation to respond arrives. The more people who do their part in answering the Census, the more dollars our county will receive in funding to help our growing community. k
