Beat the End-of-Summer Blues:

Creating a Smooth Transition for Back-to-School WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

F

or many families, summer doesn’t seem to last long enough. The lax nature of spending time together, coupled with a decrease in strict routines and schedules, while having more fun in the sun can feel more like a dream than “real life.” But, as summer comes to a close, it doesn’t have to signify an end, but a beautiful beginning. A new chapter, a new season with so much to enjoy, and just as many good times. Here are a few tips to keep the fun going from Summer to School, and avoid the end-of-summer blues:

• Manage anxiety with a meditation or mindfulness practice. Like any major or abrupt change, going back to school can trigger anxiety or stress in both children and parents alike. Sensing the stress of a parent can trigger feelings of uneasiness in a child, and vice versa. Begin a routine mindfulness practice as a family to gain the benefits of reduced stress, anxiety and reactivity, improved memory and focus (just in time for that first math quiz), improved sleep and overall well-being. You can play mindful games, practice yoga, or take quiet walks together in the park.

• Ease into a new schedule. Catching lighting bugs by night…. catching the school bus by morning. Yikes! Many children go to bed later during the summer, and some (for those lucky parents) may wake up later, too. Waiting until last minute to enforce new bedtime rules will create more stress on everyone. About 10 days to 2 weeks before school begins - depending on how much later your child stays up during the summer months - begin your bedtime routine 10 minutes earlier each night and wake them up ten minutes earlier each morning. • The Gratitude Pillow. As your child rests his head for bed, take a few moments talking about something you are each grateful for or happy about, or something good that happened that day. Holding a positive focus before dozing off can lead to better sleep and happier mornings, which results in happier days! The more time we spend thinking about and talking about positive things, the more great things we notice all around us each day. Dedicating some time daily to feeling grateful, even if it’s only a few moments, has proven to have a profound effect on overall health and well-being. • Let the fun in the sun continue. The end of summer does not have to be the end of being outside. Nature is very important to children and adults alike. Studies have found that spending time in nature helps children build confidence, creativity, imagination and responsibility, and even reduces stress. It is also healthy for the body to be moving, and provides different stimulation than indoor activities. Autumn brings with it all sorts of amazing activities families can do outdoors such as Halloween festivities, corn mazes, hay rides, horseback riding and apple picking. • Let food be thy medicine. When you eat good, you feel good. You are what you eat. Creating or continuing a healthy eating habit is vital to having energy, and combatting physical ailments. The benefits include but are not limited to: healthy weight, mental wellbeing, concentration and focus, strong bones and muscles, energy, immunity, faster healing and recovery and reduced risk for diseases in the future. Once the habit is put in place, it becomes less likely your children or you - will reach for the junk food.

Our bodies adjust to the new healthy habits and no longer crave the harmful chemicals and additives found in many processed foods these days. Introduce a new healthy option into your meals, and slowly “crowd out” the old, unhealthy options. It doesn't have to happen overnight. This can be a gradual change, but it has tremendous, longterm benefits. • QT with your Cutie(s). During the summer, families may spend a lot more quality time together. With school comes activities, programs, homework… the list can go on and on. It may seem like a stretch to plug in some one-on-one time with your child(ren), but the rewards and benefits of that undivided attention will be worth it. Even 15 minutes spent

reading, cuddling, talking or doing an activity together can become precious, cherished memories and moments that really make life worth living and make your little ones feel super special. • Introducing…Something Special! Why not try to introduce a new tradition or something exciting as an enticing way to keep the family from feeling the endof-summer blues? How about a special family date night, a movie night with popcorn and chocolate, or a surprise trip to the dollar store to pick out some arts and crafts to do together? There are endless ways to (affordably) keep the fun going all year-long. While Summer is an unforgettable time, back-to-school doesn’t have to signify an end to the fun. Implement these tips into your routine and daily life, and you can breathe life back into an otherwise stressful or unpleasant time for parents and children. The benefits of these activities or practices will have lasting effects that improve and enhance your life overall, create connection and strengthen your bond as a family. And don’t worry, time flies. Summer will be back, again, before you know it!

new school year is an exciting time. Many parents are busy with back-to-school shopping and to-do lists. Now is also the perfect time to focus on your child’s dental health. Here are four great ways to make the most of this next school year. It’s Dentist Time. Make a dental appointment before school starts or early in the school year. Your child should see a dentist twice per year for a checkup and dental cleaning. Don’t wait until there’s a tooth ache or noticeable tooth decay, which can result in missed school. Preventative and regular dental appointments can help identify problems before they become serious.

• •

Healthy Eating. A healthy diet is an important part of good dental health. If your child takes a lunch to school, plan ahead to include healthy foods. If your child eats in a school cafeteria, teach them how to make healthy choices on their own. Healthful options for lunch or snacks include • such as fresh fruits ' foods whole

and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Avoid not-so-good choices like candy, junk food, and sugary soft drinks. Here are some easy snack ideas: a hard boiled egg, a mini sealed bag containing sugar snap peas and grapes, cucumber sandwiches, oven-roasted chickpeas, yogurt with strawberries, or clementines, which are easier for kids to to peel than oranges. Healthy Living. There is a strong connection between exercise, healthy eating and oral health. Teach your child to make smarter life choices. For example: Avoid tobacco. Drink water. Avoid harmful chemicals and overly processed foods. Choose whole foods, fruits and vegetables. Get involved in sports or be part of an exercise program. Manage stress. It’s important to encourage all of these healthy habits with your child. The way to a beautiful, sparkling smile is through making smart choices. Brushing and Flossing. Regular brushing and flossing should be part of your child’s daily routine. Bacterial

Back-to-school time is a great time to teach your child about healthy dental habits, such as brushing at least twice per day, morning and night, and flossing daily. We recommend a softbristled toothbrush since harder bristles may be too abrasive for children. We also recommend switching out your toothbrushes when they begin show wear, every three to four months. So as you’re purchasing supplies for school, stock up on extra toothbrushes for home. We hope these ideas help you and your family have a successful and healthy school year. And remember, bright, beautiful smiles are a family affair. k

Six Ways Nature Helps Children Learn WRITTEN BY: Ming Kuo Ph.D.

Spending time in nature helps kids do better in school, in a number of surprising ways. Nature helps children develop more self-discipline Many children—particularly those with ADHD—have trouble with impulse control, which can get in the way of school learning. My colleagues and I have found that green space near kids’ homes helps them to have more selfdiscipline and concentrate better— especially girls. Also, parents of kids with ADHD report that when their kids participate in activities outdoors versus indoors, it reduces their ADHD symptoms. Since self-discipline and impulse control are tied to academic success, it’s perhaps no surprise that…

M

any parents probably recognize that being outside in nature is good for their children’s health. But they may also see a tradeoff: Encouraging their kids to get outside means less time hitting the books. And less time studying must mean less academic success, right? Wrong. Remarkably, it turns out that the opposite may be true. As research has grown in this area—including my own— we’ve discovered that nature is not just good for kids’ health; it improves their ability to learn, too. Even small doses of nature can have profound benefits. How do green space and nature help kids learn? In a surprising variety of ways, we’re discovering. Nature improves children’s psychological and physical well-being, for sure—and that can impact learning. But it also seems to affect how they attend to and engage in the classroom, how much they can concentrate, and how well they get along with teachers and peers. Here is what we know so far.

16

kiddos | August • September 2019

Nature restores children’s attention Attention is clearly important for learning, but many kids have trouble paying attention in the classroom, whether it be because of distractions, mental fatigue, or ADHD. Luckily, spending time in nature—talking a walk in a park and even having a view of nature out the window—helps restore kids’ attention, allowing them to concentrate and perform better on cognitive tests. Nature relieves children’s stress Just like adults, children are less stressed when they have green spaces to retreat to occasionally, helping them to be more resilient. Studies have found that holding a class outdoors one day a week can significantly improve the daily cortisol patterns of students—reflecting less stress and better adaptation to stress— when compared to kids with indoor-only instruction. Also, in a study looking at children in rural environments, those with more nature nearby recovered better from stressful life events in terms of their self-worth and distress.

Outdoor instruction makes students more engaged and interested Kids seem to like classes outdoors. Unfortunately, many teachers fear to bring kids outside to learn, worrying that they’ll be “bouncing off the walls” afterward and less engaged in the next (indoor) lesson. Luckily, research seems to suggest that kids are more engaged in learning not only during outdoor classes but also upon returning to their classroom afterward—even if the subject they return to is not nature-related. Time outdoors may increase physical fitness While physical fitness is important for children for many reasons, one that may not immediately come to mind is the role it plays in learning. In particular, cardiorespiratory fitness seems to support efficient cognitive processing, and kids with higher fitness levels do better academically. Though it’s not clear that nature affects physical fitness directly, it is true that the more time kids spend in nature, the better their cardiorespiratory fitness. Having access to nature may encourage children to be more physically active and keep in shape longer as they age.

fun

Which 2-10 Pictures Are Not Fragments Of Picture 1? Nature settings may promote social connection and creativity The social and physical environment in which children learn can make a difference in their academic success. Letting kids spend time in settings with natural elements or giving them structured nature experiences can make for a calmer, socially safe, and fun learning environment. And being outdoors can also enhance peer-to-peer relationships and student/teacher relationships needed for learning, even for students who otherwise feel marginalized socially. It’s clear to me that we need to do more to bring this important resource to our schools. Architects and city planners should keep trees and green areas in and near schoolyards. And teachers and principals should incorporate lessons outdoors and use recess not as a reward for good behavior, but as a way to rejuvenate students’ minds for the next lesson.

About the Author Ming Kuo, Ph.D., leads the Landscape and Human Health Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research convincingly links healthy urban ecosystems to stronger, safer neighborhoods, lower crime, reduced AD/HD symptoms, reduced aggression, and an array of other mental and physical health indicators. Dr. Kuo’s work has spurred increased urban forestry efforts in Wales, Germany, the Netherlands, the Caribbean, and the United States, and, in 2018, she was awarded the Heinz Award for the Environment.

Answer: 3, 5, 8.

By doing so, we won’t only be benefitting our kids’ psychological well-being—though that’s reason enough! We will likely help them perform better in school, too. And, as a connection to nature breeds more care for nature, we may also be inspiring the future stewards of our natural world. Humans evolved to grow and thrive in natural environments, and research is showing the costs of indoor childhoods. It’s time to cure “nature deficit disorder” in our kids by giving “nature time”—not just studying and extracurricular time—the importance it deserves. k

Music for Babies (Birth - Walking): Play musically with your baby through bouncing and rocking songs, wiggle and peek-a-boo games, dancing, moving, and singing. Activities are designed to increase your child’s curiosity about music, develop

your child’s musical aptitude, listening abilities, and overall potential. English and bilingual classes available! his fall, as part of its yearlong 35th anniversary festivities, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will host its first-ever family fundraiser—KIDS JAMM at PAMM. On October 27, presented by Center Academy, this unique event will encourage children of all ages, and parents alike, to explore their creativity and tap

28

into their inner artists. Working with renowned multi-disciplinary artists, kids will have an unforgettable experience creating their own masterpieces. KIDS JAMM is a rare opportunity for kids and their grown-ups to interact and create with some of Miami’s best-known artists, as well as artists from around the country.

With PAMM’s stunning views and architectural splendor as the backdrop, KIDS JAMM will also feature live music, fun activities, tasty snacks and treats, performers, special guests, and so much more - all designed for families to forge a deeper connection with PAMM, living artists, and the creative process. All funds raised will support several of the museum’s robust art education program, the largest of its kind outside the Miami-Dade County public school system. Attendees will help support PAMM’s free access days, like PAMM Free Second Saturdays and Free First Thursdays. Both days give museum access to thousands of families each month, allowing them to experience the transformative power of the arts firsthand. From handson art-making activities to special intergenerational programs, both of these days allow families to visit the museum without barriers and engage with the art on the walls.

Proceeds from the event will also support the PAMM Student Pass. Launched in 2018, the program grants free admission to the museum for all students currently attending MiamiDade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), plus an adult. Creating access and early exposure to art not only opens a child's heart and mind to creativity and ingenuity, but also sharpens critical thinking and other skills that help students learn content across the educational disciplines. If you are looking for an arts-immersive, family-friendly day that gives back to the community, KIDS JAMM is a must-do for your social calendar. k

KIDS JAMM will take place on October 27, 2019, from 10am–2pm at PAMM, located at 1103 Biscayne Blvd. Don’t miss out! For more information, visit pamm.org/kidsjamm19.

chool-age children, from preschoolers to college students, need vaccines. Making sure that your children receive all their vaccinations on time is one of the most important things you can do as a parent to ensure your children's long-term health as well as the health of friends, classmates, and others in your community. Getting every recommended dose of each vaccine provides children with the best protection possible. Keep in mind that there are many opportunities to catch-up on vaccines for your preteen or teen. Preteens and teens typically see their doctors or other health care professionals for physicals before participation in sports, camping events, travel, and applying to college.

Kodable

Programming for kids, made with

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

L

earning to code can be a lot like learning a new language. It's very complex and takes time to master the skill levels. Kodable is encouraging children of all ages to learn coding and become a real computer programmer while having fun doing it! Kodable is an immersive world of games and activities designed to help children learn the basics of computer programming. Guide the fuzzFamily, a group of adorable, furry aliens along their journey through the Smeeborgian Galaxy as they encounter puzzles, games and activities to challenge a child’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Kids learn to use functions, loops and even try their hand at JavaScript, one of the world’s most widely used programming languages.

Used in more than half of U.S. elementary schools, Kodable helps teachers introduce important programming concepts to students in the form of algorithms, game design and object-oriented programming. Kodable provides materials, lesson plans and training for teachers so they feel comfortable teaching computer programming even if they don’t have computer science training. The world around us is increasingly digital and the world our kids will inherit is sure to be even more influenced by technology. Kodable founders Jon Mattingly and Grechen Huebner want to give all kids the opportunity to learn to code at an early age so they are prepared for the future. Learning computing logic and problem solving at a young age has benefits throughout the

rest of your life. Kids who learn to code become proficient at how to think logically and problem solve while still young and growing. What are people saying? The beloved app has been a favorite among Miami teachers for years. “[The students] came back to school SO EXCITED. They wanted to get back on. They wanted more, “ said Elena Martinez, 1st grade teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary. “The platform allows all elementary ages to be successful coders. As the student’s ability progressed, so did the capabilities within Kodable. Each grade level using the platform found it to be appropriately challenging and fun to use,” said Cindy Gonzalez, STEM teacher at Gulliver Academy. k
