Choosing a Maternity Hospital or Birthing Center WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

I

t can be quite overwhelming for mothers when it comes time to choose which location is best for delivery. There are so many things to be considered. So, in honor of National Maternity Day on October 29th, we’d like to share a few tips for Moms to be on choosing a Maternity Hospital or Birthing Center so

8

kiddos | October • November 2019

that you can have a safe and stress-free delivery! Choosing a Hospital Most times, you'll deliver your baby at the hospital where your healthcare provider has admitting privileges. Keep that in mind when choosing a doctor or midwife. Here are some things to consider when selecting a Maternity Hospital for delivery:

• Feedback and Reviews from Other

Mamas. It’s helpful to find out what experiences other mothers had at the hospital(s) you are considering. What do reviews say about this hospital? Talk to the women in your life with children and ask them where they delivered and what their experience was. Find out if they were satisfied with their stay and the staff. You can also find community forums to ask questions and for feedback about a particular hospital you have in mind.

Childbirth is an emotional process and experience that is going to be life-changing for you and your family.

• Ask your OBGYN. Ask your doctor

for a list of hospitals he/she is affiliated with. Explain your needs, and ask which facility is best able to meet them. Ask questions, and for his/her opinion on which hospital has the best labor and delivery, and recovery care.

• Take a Tour. After narrowing down a

list of hospitals you are considering, take a tour! Look at how busy or quiet the maternity ward is. Check out the size of the rooms, and how clean everything looks. Find out if you would share a room or have a private room (and if your partner or caregiver will be able to stay). Ask about amenities and equipment and the availability of nurses and doctors. Be sure to include a tour of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

• Distance from Home. Be sure to

choose a hospital that is in close proximity to your home, especially in the case of a high-risk pregnancy. Have a route planned out that will help you with avoiding traffic.

• Ask Questions. Once you narrow

down your choices, be sure to ask a lot of questions so you can gather all of the information you need before making this very important decision. You can ask how many support people are allowed

in the room with you during labor and birth, if the room you go into labor in will be the same as the delivery room, if anesthesiologists are at the hospital, policies with siblings and visitors, if the baby will be able to stay with you 24/7, if there are lactation specialists available, if they accept cord blood donations, etc. Ask questions that are meaningful for you and your family. High-risk Pregnancy If you're at high risk for complications or preterm birth, or a child who will need immediate surgical or life-saving care at birth, you'll want to choose a hospital with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (South Florida's only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children) offers the region’s only fetal care center for high-risk infants while Jackson Hospital (with fullservice maternity programs throughout Miami- Dade County at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson North Medical Center, and Jackson South Medical Center) caters to high-risk pregnancies. Jackson Health System has world-class facilities, physicians and staff that are with you every step of the way – from essential prenatal care to your day of delivery, and for any assistance you need with breastfeeding or parenting,

and additional expertise when you need it. The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial specializes in high-risk maternity care. And as a Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center, they have specialists available around the clock. Infants with Medical Needs Nicklaus Children's Hospital's Fetal Care Center recently unveiled its new special delivery unit for high-risk infants. This specialized birthing unit – one of only a few such units nationwide – serves mothers expecting an infant diagnosed with complex medical needs requiring advanced pediatric care immediately after birth. The unit enables families to stay together through birth, maternal recovery, and specialized infant care. When you’re doing your homework and making a final choice, remember that it’s not about “right” or “wrong” or “good” and “bad.” You are finding a hospital or birthing center that is the best fit for you. It’s about the doctor and staff that will make you feel comfortable. Childbirth is an emotional process and experience that is going to be life-changing for you and your family. The decision on where to bring your baby into this world deserves your time and attention, and you deserve to deliver in a place that makes you feel good. k

Autumn & Food Allergy WRITTEN BY: Dr. Elena M. Ubals, M.D.

Some of these reactions can be very dangerous or even fatal. The person affected should seek the help of an allergy specialist to confirm the allergy through a blood test or a skin test. In addition, the person should avoid the food in question and have an adrenaline auto-injector to be used in case of an allergic reaction caused by accidental ingestion of such food.

S

ince autumn is the season for harvesting crops, it comes as no surprise that autumn is also the season for great celebrations, carnivals, and fairs to welcome abundance and prosperity with a large display of delicacies and treats. Nature softens and dresses up in golden hues to offer us a welldeserved gift for the year’s hard work. Autumn is also the season when family and friends gather around the table to savor and enjoy grandma’s recipes that meet the approval of our most demanding guests. For most of us no longer involved with farming cycles, these celebrations start with Halloween followed quickly by Thanksgiving and culminate with Christmas and New Years. The festivities go by so quickly that it seems that as we give the candies to the children on our doorsteps, the year is gone. It is a dazzling succession of culinary festivities wrapped in the warm reunion of loved ones. It is, without doubt, a wonderful season. It is also a season of elaborate and complicated recipes; strong dishes with overwhelming sauces, desserts with nuts, sausages, fish, seafood,

10

kiddos | October • November 2019

wine, and champagne; a huge gastronomic explosion! It is worth remembering, without lessening the festivities and for obvious reasons, that this season is associated with the vast majority of food reactions. Allergic reactions to food are relatively rare in adults but somewhat more frequent in children; the incidence in adults is estimated to be approximately 1% and in children, under three years of age, about 8%. For unknown reasons, the occurrence of allergic reactions to foods is on the rise. For instance, the frequency of peanut and tree nut allergy has risen in some countries such as the United States. Any food is capable of triggering an allergic reaction, but the foods commonly implicated in the majority of allergic reactions are cow’s milk, egg white, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish, and seafood. The allergic reaction is an immunologic reaction to the protein in the food and almost always occurs suddenly after the food is ingested, it is accompanied by urticaria or hives on the skin, edema or swelling, difficulty breathing and even low blood pressure with loss of consciousness.

There are other types of immunologic allergic reactions such as eczema or atopic dermatitis which are especially common in children and manifests with itching and recurrent skin rashes. Atopic dermatitis is sometimes related to the ingestion of certain foods. Allergic reactions should be differentiated from other reactions related to food ingestion that is not allergic such as food intolerance, toxic food poisoning, foodborne infection, and plain indigestion. For example, lactose intolerance is a very common condition that manifests with abdominal pain, flatulence, and diarrhea after ingesting milk. Toxic food poisoning such as Scombroid is caused by ingesting spoiled fish and could easily be mistaken at first sight with an allergic reaction. Fortunately, plain indigestion is the most common food-related ailment in general and in festive seasons in particular; in the majority of cases, indigestion does not have major consequences. Therefore, let us enjoy the festivities with moderation, keep an eye on guests with known food allergies, especially children, and Bon Appetit! k

Bottle or Breast? Either way, Moms are ahead of the game with Larken This is the all in one nursing and hands-free pumping bra ALL moms have been waiting for!

B

oth into their second pregnancies, the co-founders of Larken, Katie and Maggie, remembered well the pitfalls of the available nursing and pumping bras, which required undressing every time they wanted to pump. They struggled to find a comfortable and easy way to nurse and pump hands-free. All of the available options had zippers, snaps, tags or elastic, all irritating and less than functional. They decided to design a nursing and hands-free pumping bra that they would want to use, day and night, for nursing or pumping. Right around the time Katie went into labor, the first prototype for the Larken X nursing and hands-free pumping

bra arrived and the two moms never looked back. Much testing of the product followed to come up with the current version of the Larken X. The patent pending design is the first “all in one” nursing and hands-free pumping relaxed bra, made without any irritating elastic, snaps, zippers or awkward holes or slits. Lactation consultants are highly recommending it and moms report living in it because they can comfortably wear it all day and all night and never have to undress or change to pump hands-free. The Larken X nursing bra comes in white or black, in sizes XS to XL, and the com-

panion signature tank make a duo that mom can live in for a while, before the baby is born and as she and her bundle of joy get to know one another! The word ‘larken’ means fierce. Katie and Maggie chose this name to reflect the fact that motherhood is both beautiful and difficult. Beyond designing easy-to-use nursing and pumping garments, Larken aims to shine a light on both the beautiful and challenging motherhood moments and create an authentic community of women helping other women. k

Why Is Thanksgiving Important? How to Teach Children the Meaning of Thanksgiving

thankful for. To take this gratitude lesson to the next level, you could perhaps even hang a poster board on the wall and ask everyone to write things they are thankful for throughout the day. • Share and donate. Thanksgiving is a celebration of sharing and abundance. Develop a tradition of sharing with those who have less and involve children in contributing to a food shelter or other charities. This can help children to be thankful for what they have and learn the importance of helping others.

• Create something for Thanksgiving

F

amily, gratitude, and thankfulness are the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Follow this advice so your children can understand why Thanksgiving is important. Thanksgiving is a special holiday: a whole day focused on spending time with loved ones and being thankful, without much of the commercialism that has crept into many other holidays. But before you pull up to the table to enjoy your delicious Thanksgiving feast, consider the opportunities this day presents to teach children about the important values of Thanksgiving, such as thankfulness, gratitude, and family. Here are a few tips to teach and model important Thanksgiving lessons during the holiday:

• Talk about why we celebrate

Thanksgiving. Connect your celebration to the original story of the fall harvest celebration that brought together Native Americans and Pilgrims for a feast.

• Turn the television off during family

time. Yes, there are the parades, football games, and specials, but try to keep most

together. Whether you're cooking with your children or creating a craft, involving kids in the preparation or activity is a great way to celebrate and enjoy family time. Don’t worry if the potatoes have a lump or two—the memory-making experience is worth it. of Thanksgiving about the conversation and time spent with loved ones.

• Talk about family traditions and tell

stories. If your celebration involves multiple generations or multiple families, talk about traditions, "the good old days," and your own childhood. Stories teach children about life and history.

• Have fun. Sometimes children spend

long hours at the kid’s table while grown-ups talk and talk. Be sure fun family activities and enjoying one another is a top priority on Thanksgiving. k

• Put aside differences. Families

can be wonderful and enjoyable, but tension and stress are often a part of family get-together. Vow to put aside differences on Thanksgiving and focus on the aspects of your family for which you are grateful. While easier said than done, this provides an excellent model for children as they learn about relationships and family.

• Talk about your Thanksgiving feast.

Talk to children about where food comes from and how it was prepared. Everyone can share what their favorite food is and why.

• Be thankful. Focus on the things

you are thankful for; ask everyone at the table to say what they are thankful for or make a list of what your family is

Halloween Safety Tips

T

he Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) – District Six, is promoting the Put It Down – Distracted Driving Awareness Campaign to ensure all motorists are aware of the state’s new regulations regarding wireless communications while driving and reminding everyone to never drive distracted. Starting October 1, 2019, wireless communications devices can only be used in a hands-free manner when driving in a designated school zone or active work zone area. Drivers will be issued warnings through December 31, 2019. Starting January 1, 2020, drivers will be cited for using any wireless communication devices in a handheld manner in a work zone or school zone. The law also prohibits texting while driving. The following tips will help motorists and trick-or-treaters stay safe this Halloween.

14

kiddos | October • November 2019

MOTORISTS

• Slow down in residential neighborhoods.

• Obey all traffic signs and signals. • Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street. • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. • Children may not be paying attention to traffic and cross the street midblock or between parked cars. • Carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys. • Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible – even in the daylight. • Be sure to keep an eye out for children by looking left and right into yards and front porches.

For more information visit fdotmiamidade.com/putitdown

TRICK-OR-TREATERS

•Trick-or-treat in a group. • Be bright at night – wear retro-reflective tape on costumes and treat buckets to improve visibility to motorists and others. • Wear disguises that don’t obstruct vision, and avoid facemasks (use face paint instead). • Carry a flashlight containing fresh batteries, and place it facedown in the treat bucket to free up one hand - never shine it into the eyes of oncoming drivers. • Stay on sidewalks and avoid walking in streets if possible. • If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. • Look both ways and listen for traffic before crossing the street. • Cross streets only at the corner, and never cross between parked vehicles or mid-block. k

How Heavy Is Your Child’s Backpack? Source: American Occupational Therapy Association

S

chools are in session across the U.S. and millions of backpack-carrying students are settling into new routines – some of which include bringing the same items home each afternoon. Think the books and school supplies that your child is carrying in a backpack slung haphazardly across one shoulder are harmless? Think again. Heavy loads can cause discomfort and strain muscles in people of all ages. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) recommends that backpacks weigh no more than 10 percent of the student’s body weight. Making small adjustments to the items students are carrying can go a long way to lessen the load. “Practicing safe carrying techniques such as only carrying necessary items to and from school, or filling an empty water bottle at school rather than carrying a heavier filled one, can make a difference,” says Karen Jacobs, EdD, OTR/L, CPE, FAOTA, clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University, and an expert on school ergonomics and healthy growth and development of school-age children. “The 10 percent rule is a good one to follow, but the reality is that if it feels too heavy, it probably is.” Now that school is in session, AOTA recommends taking notice of what items are being carried to and from school and how. The following guidelines can help:

• Make sure that the backpack that is the correct size for your child.

Find The Seven Differences Between The Two Pictures

• Adjust the height of the backpack so that it

extends from approximately 2 inches below the shoulder blades to waist level, or slightly above the waist.

• Make sure your student always wear well-padded shoulder straps on both shoulders so the weight is evenly balanced.

• When packing the backpack, distribute weight evenly by loading the heaviest items closest to the child’s back and balancing materials so the child can easily stand up straight.

• Advise the student to wear the hip belt if the

backpack has one, to improve balance and take some strain off sensitive neck and shoulder muscles.

• Check that your student’s backpack weighs

no more than 10% of his or her body weight. If it weighs more, determine what supplies can stay at home or at school each day to lessen the load.

• If the backpack is still too heavy for the child, consider a book bag on wheels.

“Removing unnecessary items from the backpack should be part of every student’s daily routine,” says Jacobs. “Many books, electronic devices, items of clothing, toys, and even supplies can be carried on an as-needed basis. Having an understanding of what’s absolutely needed each day is the best way to lighten the load.” k

LUMINOSA FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AT JUNGLE ISLAND

L

Whimsical Chinese Lantern Festival

uminosa will take guests on a memorable journey through light across 13 of the park’s 18 acres. The journey tells a magical story of the jungle, which begins with an exploration of wildlife, birds, bloom and the beautiful Biscayne Bay. It then writes a chapter into the future through a story of transformation, rooted in adventure and infused with Miami’s new vibrant urban art identity. In partnership with Zigong Lantern Group and China Lantern International,

which is the #1 industry leader in Chinese Lantern Festivals worldwide, the park will invite visitors from around the globe to marvel at a nighttime jungle filled with giant lanterns, up lit by over 1 million LED lights and hand-crafted out of colorful silk by Chinese artisans, from October 5, 2019 to January 8, 2020. The festival paints a magical story of the jungle, its wildlife, birds & blooms, and Biscayne Bay, while showcasing the exciting transformation of South Florida’s

popular eco-adventure attraction. A few of the visual delights will include a lifesized demure cassowary and striking silk parrots, a sea of glowing jellyfish, and panoramic reinterpretations of several iconic Miami destinations. You don’t want to miss this nighttime spectacle! “Luminosa at Jungle Island is certain to be one of the most Instagram-worthy and talked about events of the season,” says Curtis Crider, Jungle Island’s general manager. “Between the rich history behind the festival and its beautiful pageantry set within a jungle-like setting, this must-see installation will be a celebration of two cultures coming together and the rebirth of an iconic South Florida attraction." k

Turkey on the Table

D

id you know that gratitude is a learned behavior? Turkey on the Table® is a book & activity that encourages the whole family to express and display their gratitude. The goal is to turn thankfulness into a daily routine. As parents, we want to instill values in our children that help them understand and appreciate all of life’s blessings. Cultivating a grateful heart helps create a happy child! The adorable knit turkey comes with paper feathers for the family to fill out with what they are thankful for until the turkey is "fully dressed" and ready for

display. It makes an adorable centerpiece (perfect for the kids table!) and you can even dress up your turkey with fun accessories! The kit also comes with a book that teaches children about what it means to be grateful. With each turkey purchased, Turkey on the Table gives back 10 meals to the 1 in 7 people in the U.S. who are food insecure through its partnership with Feeding America. To-date they have donated over 1 million meals. k

personal safety

Lauren's Kids Releases New Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Tool Blueprint for Building Safer, Smarter Families.

C

onversations about body boundaries and personal safety can sometimes seem uncomfortable for both parents and children – but the Safer, Smarter Families activity pack empowers families to have conversations about safety from a place of fun, and not fear. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually abused before they graduate from high school, with a hands-on or hands-off offense. But we also know that 95 percent of child sexual abuse is preventable through education and awareness. So as your young child encounters new experiences, people and situations in a new school year, help them learn some critical strategies.

The activity packs include a set of 6 guide books for parents and 6 corresponding activity books for kids. Lessons include ways for elementary school children to build: Safe relationships, including a “trusted triangle” of adults a child can talk to about anything, from a bad dream or fight with a friend, to a touch that makes them feel unsafe; Safe communication, where kids learn how to tap into their guiding voice and consider how different situations make them think, feel and act; Physical safety, such as identifying body boundaries and determining the difference between safe and unsafe touches; Personal safety, by learning about privacy, grooming tactics used by pedophiles, and what

makes a secret safe or unsafe; Plans for safety, through creating a P.L.A.N. for every situation and being aware of surroundings; and Safety in the digital world, knowing 1 in 5 children under 18 will be solicited sexually through the internet and the increasing importance of practicing positive cyber citizenship. k

Florida families can order a free copy of the “Blueprint for Building Safer, Smarter Families” activity pack at LaurensKids.org.

Introducing S’mores™ Indoors Breakthrough in candy-making keeps the fun going!

T

his fall, the s’more, a century-old American tradition, was re-born when Stuffed Puffs® debuted at WalMart® to rave reviews. Using an innovative and proprietary manufacturing process, Stuffed Puffs puts the chocolate inside the marshmallow, so the chocolate melts while the marshmallow toasts, virtually guaranteeing a perfect s’more. Stuffed Puffs puts an end to the frustration of juggling marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers around a campfire or hot grill. It eliminates the chunks of un-melted chocolate or uneven blending of chocolate and marshmallow that turns traditional s’more-making into a hit-or-miss adventure.

Now, in the spirit of making a good thing even better, Stuffed Puffs is introducing S’mores Indoors™ -- turning a favorite taste of summer into a year-round treat. The introduction will feature a Stuffed Puffs S’mores Kit – a bag of Stuffed Puffs and 2 sleeves of graham crackers (no chocolate bars needed) now available online as well as at WalMart. Consumers can also buy Stuffed Puffs Swag online. “The idea was born around a campfire,” said Michael Tierney, who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY in 2010. “and now with

“Stuffed Puffs is a simple idea, but not easy to execute, which is why it hasn’t been done before,” Tierney continued. “I spent seven years figuring out a truly innovative system that breaks the rules of traditional candy making. And s’mores is only the starting point. We are already at work on different flavor and coating combinations for a treat that’s as instantly snackable as it is toastable.” k
