WITH AGE, COMES WISDOM

Great insight about oral care and anesthesia for senior pets.

Aging is not a disease, however, there are anesthetic risks that occur in a geriatric patient. At VDS, we have a team of board-certified veterinary specialists in dentistry and anesthesia to ensure that each patient, young or young at heart, has a safe, appropriate, and comfortable experience.

Our anesthesia protocol for senior pets includes:

• A thorough history and pre-anesthetic evaluation, as studies report that 30% of the “senior” pet population has undiagnosed diseases.

• A close evaluation of co-existing conditions requiring particular attention including heart, liver, kidney, and endocrine metabolic disorders (e.g., Cushing’s disease).

• A personalized anesthesia plan for before, during, and after a procedure.

• Oral care treatment plan support to provide the best possible outcome and quality of life.

Here in Katy, you’ll find a Texas-style warm and welcoming environment, including state-of-the-art suites equipped with the latest veterinary imaging and monitoring equipment. Enjoy peace of mind knowing that your pet’s oral health is in the very best hands.

To learn more about how we can help your senior pet receive the best advanced dental care, please call us at 346.257.6725. Appointments are available from Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am – 7 pm.

Letter from the Editor

As a female, I think it’s in our DNA to shop! I love the tongue-in-cheek saying, “Shopping is better than a psychiatrist”, and I of course believe that anything that can improve our mental state (and the economy) is welcome! Personally, I view shopping as a treasure hunt. I like exploring to find something unusual more than I like shopping with a purpose (you know…the scenario where you have to have that dress for the party Friday night and you can’t find it). People have different opinions on shopping but for many of us, it's a type of therapy and can also be fun to do with friends and pets. I especially love shopping with my daughter…we have fun and giggle… and then I have to pay so that part isn’t as fun LOL!

birthday cakes and more. Learn all about this amazing destination and make plans to visit them and enjoy the atmosphere, including the “living wall”. The outdoor patio is shady and next to the lake, so grab some food and your favorite beverage and enjoy the outdoor area with your pup!

In addition to our story on PUCCI, we have pages and pages of interesting products in our shopping section. From toys, spa products, beds and accessories to gadgets and feeding bowls, there is a wide selection for the pet or pet lover in your life. Shopping “just because” is always on tap but the arrival of Fall is a good time to start thinking about holiday gifts and of course, we encourage you to shop with our sponsors who make PetTalk possible.

SHOP IN STYLE!

As Fall begins, so does shopping season and we all need some Re-Tail Therapy! In this issue, we curate a fresh, fun shopping guide for you PLUS we highlight one of Houston's most unique concepts, PUCCI Cafe & Pet Boutique. We had a blast photographing the beautiful pet products, eyeing the delicious pastries and we couldn't help but enjoy a glass of prosecco to wind down once the photoshoot was completed. Our cover pooch Milly was the perfect model in her stylish top-knot bow along with our awesome human model, Gabby Byrd. Milly's bestie, Lolly, enjoyed arriving in luxury for the shopping adventure along with mom, Sandra Shook. Learn all about PUCCI and more in our feature story!

Given the therapeutic nature of the “sport” of shopping and the fact that our world seems in turmoil, shopping can help take our minds off of serious things for a moment. With that in mind, I thought getting a head start on ideas for the upcoming holiday shopping season would be apropos. It’s nice to shop for ourselves but it can be quite fun to shop for our furry kids as well. There are SO many products to choose from and in many cases, you can even take your pup along with you for the adventure and we have just the place for you! We highlight one of Houston’s best and newest treasures, PUCCI Cafe & Pet Boutique located in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch. Their concept is unique by combining luxury pet products with a cafe offering third wave coffees, pastries, and sandwiches along with wines, craft beers and champagne. My kind of place….drinking and shopping go hand in hand in my opinion! The pups aren’t left out when it comes to food either. The bakery has an amazing selection of treats, chews,

Also in this issue we announce the winner of our annual Beach Bum Photo Contest and we prompt you to Save The Date to enter the upcoming Halloween Photo Contest in October. We have contests throughout the year so sign up for our bi-monthly newsletter on our website or follow us on FB to stay tuned in. The photos submitted in our contests always make me smile!

Recently, I took a trip to New Braunfels and I share some of the pet-welcoming aspects of this quaint little town of German heritage. I hadn't visited this area in nearly 15 years and I loved it! Check out my story on page 40. There are plenty of places within a few hours drive of Houston that offer something unique and fresh. As the weather hopefully gets better, plan a day trip or weekend getaway with your pet(s) and family. Form wine trails to state parks to a beach sojourn, Texas offers it all and that's why we love the Lone Star state!

Happy Fall and football season (Go Aggies)...enjoy!

Henrietta

It's true that I normally write my column about sophisticated and intellectual subjects like world pawlitics, global sporting events, populism, environmental conservation and the like. I do not waste my penmanship on tawdry topics like peeing on fire hydrants, sniffing butts and rolling in stank. But this month I’m breaking bad (wind) and writing about an unseemly subject: farts. Yes, I said it, I’m writing about air biscuits. Why, you might ask would I delve into such flatulous content? The reason is this: I’ve spent an entire week “tooting my own horn” and it’s not the kind that refers to bravado. It’s been more humiliating than when Wendy Williams simultaneously burped and farted on air. Actually, maybe that was worse than what happened to me. I, at least, wasn’t on national television.

So here’s how it went down…or should I say out? This might be TMI but I normally don’t fart. And if I do, I’m in control of the situation and timing if you know what I mean. I’m skilled at disguising it by a loud cough or if it’s silent, I blame Hortense. I just say “Hortense is such a blast isn’t she?” and I wink at the others. Hortense always tells me afterward that she appreciates me “tooting her horn” for her to friends. Oh, if she only knew.

Anyway, back to my story. I’m strolling down Main Street, headed for the Salty Dog’s Bingo With Bongo night and a little toot comes out and I think, “WTF!” (What The Fart) and give it no more thought. I saunter into the “The Dog” and all my peeps are there, which I’m happy to see because I totally expect to beat them all and take home the winning prize - a month’s supply of meaty bones from the Dirty Dog Deli. Just as I do my signature move and spin and jump onto the barstool, a HUGE loud fart emits from my be-hind. Of all times for Hortense to not be standing anywhere near me! And of course guess who is right there to hear it: Penelope the the pomp-

On Passing Gas

ous poodle, A.K.A. my nemesis. “Oh Henrietta, that was quite smelly, but not surprising from someone that dumpster dives in the alley behind the GoldenDoodle Corral. You poor thing. You must be uncomfortable and in need of some Milk of Magnesia because you know what they say: A fart is the lonesome cry of an imprisoned turd.” As the color red began to climb upward in my body from both embarrassment and anger and I took on the appearance of a bottle of Big Red, I wheeled around on my barstool and said, “You’re going to need more than Milk of Magnesia when I give you Amnesia from the brawl we are about to have in the parking lot!” Of course everyone in the Salty Dog has now gathered round, most likely hoping for a duel between me and my rival. Unable to help themselves, they join in my torment.

Vinnie, a transplanted Rottweiler from the Bronx, pipes up and says, “Nice Poofsa Henrietta!” He is literally as useless as the “g” in lasagna but my now former friends laughed hysterically at his joke. Then cousin Harold had to join in and shouts, "Didn't ya'll know Henrietta is starring in a Disney movie this year? She's playing the role of Stinkerbell."

Raucous laughter erupts. Even my own cousin has betrayed me. I shouldn't care because this is my cousin that's so stupid he went to the dentist to get a bluetooth but I expect more loyalty out of family. "Harold, you're more disappointing than an unsalted pretzel", I said with as much dignity as I could muster as I headed for the door. Once outside, I broke into a full trot to escape the depraved cruelty of my so-called friends. As I trotted faster and faster, little toots kept escaping. Oh the HORROR! I recalled that I was once told that farts are rainbows coming from unicorns. I definitely was not

feeling like a unicorn as I burst into the house and crumbled into a puddle of tears. DL came running, sloshing the wine in the glass she was holding that read: "Of course size matters. No one wants a small glass of wine." God help me that this is the only person to whom I can turn for comfort. "What the dickens is the problem Henrietta", she slurs. "I have the farts!!", I wail through my tears. "It's awful. It's been a torrent of one-cheek squeakers and the worst one of all was in front of Penelope!" I sob. DL looks at me with a dazed look (yes, people like her is why there has to be instructions on a shampoo bottle) and then she erupts in uncontrollable laughter. "This isn't funny", I blubber through my now-snotty nose. "My dear Henrietta", she says through her loud and irritating cackle, "I wanted you to loose some weight so I switched your kibble to Super-High Fiber. That way, you'll feel full without all those calories." What the $#@%&!! Did she just insult my weight while also ruining my entire life? "Well clearly intelligence skips a generation and you are proof of it", I blurt out. "Henrietta, I'm only trying to help you. Don't be insulting." "I'm not insulting you, I'm describing you", I retort, which got me into even more trouble.

Next thing I know, I'm locked in the laundry room while the dragon is overheard calling her sister to say she can't talk right now. Honestly, what did I do to deserve this person as a mother who thinks chocolate milk comes from brown cows? Embarrassed, furious, drained and depressed, I curl up in my purple beanbag. As I lay there thinking of how my life is in ruins, I fall into a deep sleep and have a vivid dream where DL and I are at the biggest pet gala of the year and she's set to give the opening speech. While she's droning on and on, I've snuck a whoopie cushion under her chair. Once finished, she goes to sit with that plastic smile of hers that says "I'm wonderful" and the whoopie cushion lets a huge fart for the whole ballroom to hear. Even her botox couldn't keep her face from projecting absolute despair. I laugh, trot to the microphone and say, "Oh Mom, I forgot to tell you I added Super-High Fiber to your wine so you don't have to drink so much to feel full." She seethes and runs off stage while I stay and bow to the uproarious laughter of the crowd. And then I woke up. I called Hortense to go out for a good squirrel chase. I figured there's not much to be done about the situation other than BLOW IT OFF.

the amazing art submitted in the student art contest. The show is always held the third weekend in July when temps are super-hot in Houston, so mark your calendar for next year to enjoy all things dog INDOORS! PetTalk has been a show sponsor since 2005 and we had a great time meeting our readers, handing our FREE grocery totes, magazines and watching the smiles generated from our famous spinning wheel. Best Friends Animal Society's Adopt Local Initiative

The greater Houston area continues to see a record number of homeless dogs and cats in the community and because of that, many shelters and rescues are over capacity. This September, Best Friends Animal Society, a national welfare organization working to end the killing of cats and dogs in America’s shelters by 2025, urges Houstonians to Adopt Local and welcome home a dog or cat from shelters in the area.

The month-long initiative aims to make an impact toward taking Houston, and the state of Texas, no-kill - a milestone in animal welfare that means at least 90% of the animals enter-

ing the shelter system will leave alive and not be killed due to lack of space. By choosing the adoption option, we are one step closer to ending the unnecessary killing of animals in shelters and becoming a no-kill country.

The Adopt Local initiative brings together Houston shelters, rescue groups, other animal welfare organizations, and passionate individuals to gain community support and get as many dogs and cats as possible adopted.

Adopt Local will run September 1-30. For additional information and a list of participating shelters, visit BFAS.org/adoptlocalhouston.

talk to the owners, see and touch the products, learn what’s new and so forth. It’s about the experience…it’s Re-Tail Therapy!

Every time I walk into my friend’s house and see the sign hanging on her refrigerator that says, “My husband and I are doing a workshop. He works and I’ll shop", I giggle. It’s a reminder that shopping isn’t just about getting the goods, it’s about the adventure...so check out our shopping guide, keep calm and shop on!

PUCCI Café & Pet Boutique

Nestled in a beautiful corner spot in the upscale shopping and dining mecca, LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch, is an exciting find for dog lovers, PUCCI Café. Unique and cozy are the first words that came to mind when I entered the beautiful boutique and café. There’s simply nothing like it in Houston! Inside, patrons can order a delicious coffee and pastry or enjoy a refreshing prosecco or glass of wine all while perusing the luxury products for pooches. From Italian leather collars to plush blankets, PUCCI offers an array of accessories, apparel, toys, spa products and more that would make any dog’s tail wag. And although the store is filled with beautiful wares, the ultimate favorite for any pup is the bakery. Stocked with

healthy, all-natural delights in all sorts of shapes and colors (and for all occasions including birthdays), the gourmet treats alone are worth a visit. Once you’ve shopped and selected your favorite beverage and snack, you can enjoy your tasty sips and bites indoors while admiring the awardwinning “living wall” or you can retire outside to the comfortable couches under the trees while allowing the lake view to ease your stress. As the season of shopping begins, we wanted to introduce our readers to this unique destination. You are sure to find beautiful gifts for any dog in your life while enjoying the café experience. Come along and learn more about PUCCI Café, from our sit down with owners Bobby and Maria Davidson.

1. We're so excited to tell Houstonians about your unique café and boutique. Tell us about how you got started and your inspiration for the store.

Our new boutique is a one-of-a-kind doggie destination with a dog welcoming public café aspect to it that has been in the works

for several years now. We launched the online portion of the boutique in 2019, right before the pandemic started.

After several trips to Europe, we were inspired by the dog-friendly cafés that are accustomed to European lifestyles. We felt as if the United States lacked such concepts, and

PUCCI was born. We offer luxe designer accessories imported from Europe, South America, and some of them made right here in the USA. PUCCI was established as a place to not only shop for high-end dog products, but as a space for people to mingle with their pooches on a regular basis.

With the success of our online store and the pandemic ending, we started looking for our brick and mortar locations around Houston. We studied the demographics and settled on the upscale shopping area; LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch. We are also residents of Cinco Ranch so that played a significant role as well.

Our overall mission is to help dog rescues in our community and the surrounding area. We give a portion of all proceeds back to dog rescues organizations that we have developed relationships with, and we bring awareness to their dogs looking for forever homes via our website and the PUCCI "mission wall".

Surrounded by greenery in our boutique, the mission wall showcases a representative collection of dogs looking for forever homes. We have QR Codes on each picture so that when one scans it, the link will take them to that particular dog on our website. Their page will give a synopsis of the dog including personality, likes and dislikes and health background. At the bottom of each page is a link to

28 www.houstonpettalk.com

the proper rescue that is fostering the dog. The hope is to find them a great family to be with in the final stages of their life.

2. Tell us more about your boutique and the items you sell.

PUCCI has 72 different categories of beautiful, sustainable dog products that are both imported and domestic. They include (but are not limited to) ready-to-wear clothes, collars, leashes, harnesses, toys, beds and blankets, wedding selections for your pups and our own brand of SPA products, such as all-natural shampoos, conditioners and body sprays. Patrons can shop in the boutique in LaCenterra OR on our online boutique to be shipped to your door OR save on shipping and have it delivered to the boutique for local pick up.

3. As soon as I walked in the café, my eyes (and stomach) were drawn to the yummy display of food and beverage. Tell us more about the café.

We pride ourselves in adopting the third wave coffee movement, which focuses on high-quality coffee drinks. We have an espresso machine imported from Italy and all of our baristas are trained at the third wave coffee drink level. Even if they had worked as a barista somewhere else, we train them the PUCCI way to offer our customers superior coffee selections.

Along with those, we have matcha and chai lattes, with bagels, danishes of all flavors, artisan waffles, apple turnovers, cinnamon rolls, specialty sandwiches and delicious desserts such as cannoli’s, cheesecakes, Argentinian cookies and alfajores. For the evenings we have selections of fine wines, craft beers and champagne.

4. The "living wall" is so creative and beautiful. We understand you even won an international award. What was the inspiration for the wall?

With the dog friendly vibe of loving animals and living creatures, we wanted to bring in an ambiance of living things such as our living walls. Inspired by the very green Italian cityscapes, we wanted to bring in an element of life for those to enjoy while sitting waterside on our back patio.

The walls have taken a life of their own now with those using it as a backdrop for pictures and videos for their social’s posts. Moreover, in collaboration with Natura, the company that helped us create the walls, they were entered into the International Plantscape competition in Florida. PUCCI Café was granted the Platinum Award for Design. We now showcase a glass trophy inside the boutique, of which we are very proud.

5. Do you host any dog-related events at the café? Yes, we do hold many events. We have partnered with multiple dog rescue organizations to bring in sweet dogs that are looking for forever homes. Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights we have live music on the patio. We encourage customers to leash their pups and come on by for a cocktail and enjoy the sounds. We always post the events on the PUCCI Calendar on our website, and we keep our customers updated

on events via our social media.

Also, we host doggie Gotcha Day or Birthday parties for our 4-legged customers and their humans. Multiple packages to choose from include cake treat & candle, bowls of bottled water, Gotcha Day/Birthday bandana, plus a large bottled artesian water and cakes for the humans.

The parties also include party balloons, birthday hat, and a cute doggie bow tie. Of course the party comes with lots of attention and love from the PUCCI Pack! We will reserve

Houston PetTalk Magazine 29

an area on the PUCCI patio. Also, wine, beer and champagne are available at a discount with party packages.

6. What are the “rules” for dogs visiting? Tell us about the patio area.

To comply with Fort Bend County Health Regulations, since we are serving food and drink for their humans, only registered service dogs are allowed inside. If you are visiting with just you and your pup, we do have staff allocated to watch and play with your pup in our Bark Park, located on the patio, while you experience the interior. Additionally, per our city law, all dogs must remain on a leash in public areas.

7. What a great concept you've created! Are there plans to expand?

Yes, we do have plans for additional locations in Houston and even around the United States. We actually had some visitors from UAE and they were wishing we would open a location in Dubai. We were flattered but thought it best that we stick to our own backyard first before leaving the United States to look for new locations!

Interestingly, as we searched for specialty items across the world to bring to the PUCCI Café & Boutique, we discovered other sustainable, cool products that we liked. However, they were not of the PUCCI Café style. They were more outdoorsy and rugged, so we created a sister brand and have big plans coming for that company, named Happy Breath (HappyBreath.com). The brand will cater to hikers, backpackers, campers, and fitness-oriented people. And, just like PUCCI Café, Happy Breath also has a great philanthropic mission. We give a portion of all proceeds to organizations that keep our oceans and rivers clean.

& Gruene Texas: A Weekend Getaway With Your Pup

It’s no secret that this summer has shown us brutal heat and most everyone is ready for Fall weather! When the temps soar to the levels we’ve seen in past weeks, the mind tends to envision body-immersion in cool waters. Fulfilling the need to cool off, many Texans flocked to the cool river waters for one of our most famous pastimes…floating the river! I, just like thousands of others, headed to New Braunfels for a weekend getaway and had a blast! And of course, I wanted to share the fun times and ideas for a weekend trip with you!

My daughter and I visited New Braunfels for a quick trip to float the river, do a little shopping and check out the quaint town of Gruene, famous for its dance hall (built in 1878, it is Texas' oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall), music, food and quintessential Texas historical district. Both towns were settled by Germans and maintain their German heritage.

We chose to stay in a historic inn rather than a national-chain type hotel. We were only visiting for one night so that limited our choices, as many inns required a two night stay. I truly can’t believe how lucky we were to book the last room at the Prince Solms Inn. Established in 1898, the hotel is located in the heart of downtown and offers 8 guest rooms that are impeccably decorated with each offering its own character. In the basement is the wellknown Sidecar bar, which, during our stay, boasted an amazing Jazz band that played to a sold-out crowd. We shared a tasty charcuterie board, which was perfect after a day of floating the river. There is an adjacent restaurant, Muck & Fuss, that offers outdoor dining to enjoy with your pup at your side.

After we filled up on meat, cheese, crackers and yummy accoutrements, we headed for Moonshine & Ale bar at the suggestion of the Prince Solms Inn manager. What a fun time!

Moonshine & Ale is a sing-a-long bar and the rowdy crowd sang enthusiastically to songs ranging from Elton John to Luke Bryan. If you want a lively evening, I highly recommend this place!

The following morning we walked the downtown area and found two coffee shops offering scrumptious breakfast and pastries. We did some window shopping (it was Sunday morning so most shops were closed) and vowed to come back for a shopping weekend this Fall. Plenty of pooches were walking about with their owners, enjoying the laid back atmosphere.

The previous day’s float was great fun, although very crowded, but if you’re a Texan, you have to float the river at some point because it’s our THING! There are outfitters renting floats for dogs and we did see a few pups enjoying the ride. If you choose to take your dog along, be prepared with a life-vest, water, water bowl, leash, and sunscreen for those with light skin.

After we checked out of the inn, we headed for Gruene, just a few miles away. We passed a beautiful large park, Landa Park, on the way and saw plenty of pets and their parents enjoying a walk or a ball toss. The park offers a swimming pool, paddling on the lake, trails and a miniature train ride around the 50 acres.

Once in Gruene, we visited numerous shops offering everything from cowboy hats to antiques to novelties and more. Yes, we bought a few silly things! Lunch was next on the agenda and we opted for the famous Gristmill River Restaurant - food was tasty, drinks even better!

Although our trip was a last minute thought and therefore super quick, we were enchanted with the area, the many attractions, the petfriendly amenities and we are making plans to return SOON!

Check out my list of pet-related hotels and things to do so that you too can make plans to enjoy one of Texas’ greatest treasures!

Blood Transfusions For

Dogs And Cats

As pet owners, we all worry about the nightmare scenario of our pet accidentally running out the door and being struck by a vehicle. Unfortunately, this terrible event does happen even when we are diligent about safety. The trauma of being stuck by a car can be very life threatening and one of the results can be a need for a blood transfusion due to loss of blood, including internal bleeding. Red blood cells carry critical oxygen to the tissues. Have you ever thought about where an ER obtains blood?

Dogs have many blood types but they are not the same as humans. There are many subtypes but they are classified as either DEA 1.1 negative (dog erythrocyte antigen) or DEA 1.1 positive. Negative is considered the “universal donor” and most dogs can receive their first blood transfusion without having to check for compatibility, commonly known as a “cross match”. It is very important for you to tell any veterinarian if your pet has ever received a prior blood transfusion because

the risk of a transfusion reaction is greatly increased.

Once the blood type is known, we have a few options. Depending upon patient needs, we may choose to obtain “whole blood”. This means we draw blood from a donor dog and then give it to the recipient dog. This blood contains red and white blood cells, platelets and plasma proteins. Donor dogs are pre-screened for multiple infectious diseases and they can only donate once every 6-8 weeks. Most donor dogs are large breeds, young and healthy.

If the patient only needs red blood cells, we can use “packed red blood cells”. This is blood that has been processed and separated to just provide concentrated red blood cells. Most ER hospitals have this in stock.

The third option is to auto-transfuse the patient. This situation is encountered when a healthy dog suffers a major trauma, is bleeding large amounts into a body cavity and needs an immediate transfusion. The blood is evacuated, passed through a filter and then returned to the patient through an IV catheter. The advantage of this is that the patient will not suffer an immediate transfusion reaction or an immune mediated destruction of foreign blood. Red blood cells typically have a life

span of approximately 120 days. The life span of transfused blood is variable. For example, if a dog has an auto-immune disease called hemolytic anemia, his immune system is incorrectly attacking and destroying its own red blood cells. When that patient receives a transfusion from another dog, the patients primed hypersensitive immune system readily attacks and destroys these “foreign” cells. In those cases, the new transfused cells might be destroyed in a matter of hours!

We purchase many blood products from companies across America. These are commercial blood banks who follow the strictest procedures and protocols. We also use staff owned dogs or client owned dogs that have been examined by one of our veterinarians and been pre-screened to be free of diseases. We also indefinitely keep a log of every patient that has received any kind of a transfusion in the case of later complications.

Blood transfusions are often life saving procedures. If proper protocols are followed and the patient is closely monitored during the process, it is generally a safe treatment. Our thanks and gratitude to all the dogs and cats who gave the gift of life to others. Many lives have been saved because of them.

Aquamation

How Does This Method Of Cremation Work?

Losing a beloved pet can be a difficult and emotional experience. As a pet caregiver, thinking about what aftercare option is right for you and your beloved pet before you say goodbye means you won’t have to feel distress about that choice when your pet’s time to say goodbye arrives.

The way people care for their loved ones after passing varies from place to place and includes a wide variety of ceremonies and rituals that commemorate the connection created in life. This type of care is not exclusively reserved for humans; throughout history, animals have also been treated and honored with the same respect and dignity.

Aftercare is a showing of appreciation, care, and a way to strengthen a bond

with a loved one. It is of such importance that many cultures consider it sacred, and some believe it is just the beginning of a new journey that simply continues after life.

In modern times, caregivers have different aftercare options for their loved ones. Families can choose from flamebased cremation, home burials or Aquamation (water-based cremation.) These choices are available for families based on their personal preferences and the legal requirements of the location (home burials).   You may also want to take the time to honor your pet’s memory through creating a memorial or keepsake. In the last few years, more options have become available as keepsakes. Many families choose to keep a clay paw print, ink print, a small clipping of the pet's fur, create a jewelry piece, etc.

Water-based cremation (alkaline hydrolysis), known as Aquamation, is becoming increasingly popular. Aquamation is an

eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation and home burial. It is a process that gently uses water instead of fire to return a body back to Mother Nature.

The process of Aquamation uses 90% less energy than flame-based cremation, there are no emissions of harmful greenhouse gases or mercury and there is no burning of fossil fuels at any point during the process. (Because of the way the Aquamation process works, families can receive 20% more ash remains.) If your family is considering Aquamation for your pet, it is important to work with a reputable provider with experience in Aquamation services.

Aftercare is an important part of pet ownership, and Aquamation is a promising option for pet owners seeking a gentler, more eco-friendly method. The eco-friendly nature of Aquamation honors not only your pet, but the future of our planet.

Faithful Paws Pet Therapy

“The pets are here!” is a common squeal of delight when Faithful Paws Pet Therapy comes to visit. The organization’s history, like the work itself, is inspiring. Founded by Connie Richards in 1997 after a life-threatening accident, it is Houston’s largest pet therapy group. In 2022, over 10,000 visits were logged to schools, libraries, hospitals, senior-tiered living, hospice, colleges, universities, and other organizations.

Faithful Paws began as a ministry of Bellaire United Methodist Church, becoming an independent 501c3 nonprofit in 2023. Executive Director Lynn Morris and her team are laser focused on staying true to the 26 year old mission of “providing unconditional love to all we meet”. A member portal is complete, and a refreshed website is coming.

Faithful Paws visits dozens of facilities each week, with 60 facilities on a waiting list. All the pets live with their owner/handlers. New members are certified throughout the year through Faithful Paws training classes where prospective members and their pets learn the skills to become a therapy pet. Each training class meets once a week for five weeks in two-hour sessions. Trainees practice the ten skills required to earn the Canine Good Citizen title, sponsored by the American Kennel Club. Dogs learn not to bark or sniff each other and to walk calmly on a loose leash. They practice not reacting to distractions like a walker, food cart or unexpected sounds. Cats and rabbits are temperament assessed and all trainees receive in depth coaching in a class titled “Visit 101”, which covers approaching a wheelchair, getting on and off an elevator, and appropriate behavior for both the human and pet members and more! The code of ethics focuses on excellence, integrity, respect, and professionalism.

Visiting teams are composed of two to

six handlers and their pets, with the majority of teams being dogs. Many members are inspired to volunteer because of personal issues where they or a family member has been helped by a therapy pet. These four-legged friends always know the right thing to say…without speaking a word. Hospitalized patients and their families frequently cry with joy when they receive a pet therapy visit. Children love to read to the pets at libraries. Visits to high schools and universities for stress relief at exam times are always in high demand. Supporting sensory days at the Houston Children’s museum is beneficial and enjoyed by all.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Faithful Paws. Annual membership fees are kept low because volunteers give their precious time and pay for transportation, shirts and other items necessary for visiting. Faithful Paws cordially invites you to consider becoming a member, a nonvisiting volunteer or to consider a donation at FaithfulPawsHouston.org.

6. What would you say is most important in the culture at Bingle Vet?

1. How long has Bingle Vet been serving Houston and how did you get started?

Bingle Vet has been serving Houston as early as the 1960’s. Bingle Vet started in a family home which was converted into a veterinary clinic. It was originally owned my Dr. Lassig. In 1995, after the clinic had been closed for 2 years, Robert Vaughan II purchased the practice. In 2020, his wife joined him and helps manage the business aspects of the clinic. In 2010, the old building was replaced with a state-of-the-art building offering veterinary services and a resort & spa.

2. When and why did you add the second location in Katy?

In 2015, due to the success of Bingle Vet in the Spring Branch area, the decision was made to expand Bingle Vet by offering a second location. The Katy and Fulshear area was a perfect option as it was a new, up and coming community. We opened Bingle Vet Katy in January of 2016.

3. Veterinary medicine serves an important role in the community for the health of people’s pets. Tell us a little about your business approach or philosophy.

Bingle Vet is a family-owned practice focused on being the most outstanding vet clinic with

top-notch customer service and patient care. We differentiate ourselves from other practices by offering a 10-minute guarantee as we value client's time and want to ensure that their pet is seen instantly. We understand the frustrations of waiting long periods to see a doctor. Plus, we offer home-baked cookies for pets! Our goal is to ensure that clients and pets receive an excellent level of service and dedication from our entire professional team.

4. Does Bingle Vet offer surgery? Overnight care? Any unique services?

Bingle Vet is a full-service veterinary practice offering a variety of surgeries including spays and neuters, as well as soft tissue surgery and dental surgery. We have a well-equipment treatment area including digital X-ray, ultrasound, dental X-ray, and complete blood lab station. Although Bingle Vet can address urgent care needs, we are not an overnight emergency clinic.

5. Tell us why a pet owner should choose to use Bingle Vet for their animal’s care. Community residents benefit from Bingle Vet’s 25+ years of experience including our full-service veterinary care provided by an experienced, professional team. We offer extended hours, convenient drop off service,

While patient care and customer service are of upmost importance to Bingle Vet, employee morale and team culture are just as important. Bingle Vet believes in providing a work environment focused on taking care of the team. We offer weekly team meetings, continual training as well as team events outside of work. The team works within "10 Points of Culture” to make sure that all family pets receive the best medical care and live a long, healthy life. Be sure to check out the website to learn more about the 10 points of culture and mission statement for Bingle Vet.

The most visible impacts of plastic debris are the ingestion, suffocation and entanglement of hundreds of marine species. Marine wildlife such as seabirds, whales, fish and turtles mistake plastic waste for prey; most then die of starvation as their stomachs become filled with plastic.

Why I Love Animals

WHY I LOVE ANIMALS

For years when visiting the Houston Zoo, the California sea lions exhibit was one of the first things guests encountered. Their location was always perfect for me because they are in my top 5 favorite animals in the animal kingdom and one of my must-sees when visiting the zoo! This original exhibit at the zoo entrance was built in the 1950’s. However, with the newly opened Galápagos Islands exhibit, these cute, agile creatures have a brand-new home. The $72 million habitat is the world’s first zoo exhibit dedicated to promoting conservation on the islands which are chock full of endemic animals.

The 9 pinnipeds that will live together in the 372,000-gallon exhibit are, as stated, California sea lions which are very close cousins of Galápagos sea lions (a protected species and therefore they will all

remain on the islands). However, with such minimal differences that most folks would never notice, the California sea lions make a great stand-in!

I was duly impressed by the “tunnel” where guests can stand and watch the sea lions swim, flip, twirl and “torpedo” overhead, set against a backdrop of the unique underwater landscape. Even more thrilling was the fact the tunnel is temperature controlled, which on the extremely hot day of our photoshoot, was a true blessing. Although the sea lions and other aquatic sea life can be seen in the tunnel system, the sea lions can also be seen from the ground level, where they will still be performing their hand-clapping, smile-making, mesmerizing show!

A few facts about sea lions:

*Males are considerably larger than females. Males can weigh from 1,500 pounds up to 1 ton while females are much smaller with a weight of 700 pounds.

*They do not have very good eyesight and it is believed that they are nearsighted.

* They are capable of diving up to 600 feet when searching for food in the water. They can remain under the water for up to 40 minutes before surfacing for air by pinching their nostrils together until they need to take a breath of air.

*They are excellent swimmers and can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour. They generally swim at around 10 miles per hour.

Behaviorally, sea lions are considered to be highly intelligent animals as well as playful and noisy. In addition to learning tricks, they have also been trained to help the United States Navy. Specifically, MK 5 (as the sea lion team is known, while the dolphin teams are MK1-7) is dedicated to the recovery of test equipment that is fired from ships or dropped from planes into the ocean; the sea lions locate and attach recovery hardware to underwater objects such as practice mines. In this role they can out-perform human divers, who are restricted to short working times and limited repeat diving.

Typically, sea lions are very timid creatures, however, there have been some reports of aggressive attacks on humans. The males can be extremely aggressive when it comes to earning the right to mate with females.

As mammals, sea lions give live birth to their young and the female sea lions nurse their pups with milk they produce in their bodies, just like female humans. Males generally live alone and form harems during the breeding season that may last for several months. The male will protect his harem fiercely. When the larger colonies form again, the female sea lions with offspring are more likely to stay together. Once the pups are about a year old, they tend to form small sub-groups.

From a conservation perspective, sea lions are classed as an Endangered Species. Hunting is a huge threat to their survival. In some areas they are hunted as a source of food and they only have two other predators apart from man: Sharks and Killer Whales.

The future is unsure for many species of sea lions. Years of destruction by humans has taken a toll on them. Environmental concerns continue to cause problems for their natural habitats. The fact that humans are also taking control over the waters where they once lived in peace is also another huge concern. Even with conservation efforts in place, there is still a great deal of work to be done if these animals are going to survive.

Stop by the zoo and say hello to Jonah, Cali, Kamia, Max, TJ, Calypso, Ariel, Freya, and Gaia. When you visit the zoo, a portion of your ticket goes to conservation efforts worldwide.

A Cheeky New Baby: Houston Zoo Welcomes First Northern

White-Cheeked Gibbon

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight gibbon conservation at the zoo. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

It’s a Houston Zoo first! A male northern white-cheeked gibbon was born to firsttime parents Ting and Max. This is the first time this species has been born at the Houston Zoo. Guests can see the new family in Wortham World of Primates, next to the De Brazza’s monkeys. Mother and baby bonding is crucial for primates the first few weeks of life and the Zoo’s animal care team kept a close watch on the pair. The keepers, who have dedicated their lives to caring for the gibbons, had the honor of naming the newborn, Marv.

Northern white-cheeked gibbons are native to southeast Asia, Vietnam, and southern China and are critically endangered in the wild.

Their numbers have declined by 80% over the past 45 years, primarily due to habitat loss and poaching.

White-cheeked gibbons have a lot of unique features including being dimorphic in fur color. This means all white-cheeked gibbons are born a cream color and then change to black when they are about two years old. At that point, they develop their iconic white cheek patches. Males will stay black while females revert back to the cream color.

Another way to tell gibbons apart from other primates is through their exceptionally long arms. White-cheeked gibbons have the longest arm length relative to body size of any

primate. In fact, their arms are longer than their legs which helps them swing from tree to tree.

Guests can help save wild primates around the world by visiting the Zoo. A portion of each Zoo membership and admission ticket supports the Zoo’s wildlife conservation work in Asia, Africa, and South America. The Houston Zoo helps equip anti-poaching patrols, protects and restores habitat through reforestation initiatives led by locals and provides expert veterinary care to heal and rehabilitate sick and injured primates.
