Dear God, Thank You For ...

t’s been said that children make the best philosophers. And on a recent evening while putting our 4-year-old to bed, my wife and I were reminded of that. We always say a quick bedtime prayer after reading books, but this evening for no reason in particular, my wife asked our

son, “is Mommy going to say a prayer or is Ezra going to say a prayer?” Presented with the option for the first time, he thought for a second and replied, “Ezra.” Not quite knowing what we were in store for, our 4-year-old proceeded to take the pulpit and did not disappoint. “Dear God, thank you for Mommy, Daddy, Baby Sister, Grandmom, Grammy, Pa,” he began, proceeding to list pretty much everyone in our extended family. But he didn’t stop there. “Thank you for red, orange, yellow, green …” He went on to list every color he could think of. The detour delighted my artist wife and left us both amused — and surprised. It had never really occurred to us to thank God for colors. But why not? As grownups, it’s easy to take the things we see every day for granted, even the amazing palette of colors that enliven our world beyond the hues of black and white and gray. But on this night, a child’s simple prayer of gratitude reminded us that our world truly is a stunning sight to behold. It also reminded us of the value of expressing gratitude, not just during the season of Thanksgiving, but every day. Want to raise a good human being? Teaching them to have a thankful heart is probably a good place to start. Expressing gratitude is foundational to fostering other important virtues in our kids — like sincerity, empathy and humility. It teaches them to look beyond themselves, in addition to helping them feel more connected to the people, places and things around them. It also boosts their spirits and helps them to be more positive. As for us grownups, we’re listening to our child’s prayers these days with a bit more anticipation, wonder and gratitude. Because we truly are thankful for red, orange, yellow and green, especially during the season of autumn. And each day gives us another opportunity to experience gratitude through the eyes of a child. If you like to camp, Pensacola beach has campgrounds on the beach. On the Ocoee River, you can go whitewater rafting and they have campgrounds as well; it’s close enough to Chattanooga to take in Rock City. Mammoth Cave has awesome tours and is close enough to Kentucky Kingdom; you can do both.” Cynthis Kendall “Not sure what you’re looking for, but we have found that Yogi Bear Jellystone Park in Kentucky is a very affordable vacation for us. My kids LOVE it and I love it because they do. You can rent really nice cabins; different sizes. We were in the same position — we wanted a family vacation but just could not afford the beach. I was happy to find Jellystone (they even have a beach!). I feel like it’s a hidden gem.” Rachel Reese Smith “Honestly, Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City has been our cheapest vacation. It has an indoor water park and Magi Quest which kept our kids busy the whole first visit. We hiked for free. We swam at the beach for free. Had a movie night in the RV. Went kayaking for free (the people who rented us the RV had two kayaks we could use). Found free events in town or nearby cities. We went out to eat maybe two times the five days we were on our low-budget vacation. We made it fun.” Descamps Dawn “I’m a single parent with one kid. My budget is extremely tight, but we’ve been to 44 states and have had an absolute blast. We camp everywhere. We go to museums, historical sites, beaches, lakes, community events, parks. Vanderbilt Establishes Roberts Academy and Dyslexia Center Changing children’s lives is the goal of the transformational gift.

gift from Hal and Marjorie Hollis Roberts has established a new academy for primary students with dyslexia in addition to a center focused on outreach and dyslexia research at Vanderbilt University. The Roberts Academy and Dyslexia Center will be housed within Peabody College and will provide focused educational services for kids in kindergarten through grade one identified as at-risk for dyslexia and for children in grades two - five with dyslexia.The Academy will open in the fall of 2024. Marjorie and Hal Roberts of Lakeland, Florida, have three grandchildren with dyslexia. The Roberts chose Vanderbilt to be the recipient of their donation based on Peabody College’s outstanding reputation and focus on research. “The extent of dyslexia research happening at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College made it clear to us that it was the right place for this center,” Hal Roberts said. “We believe our investment in Vanderbilt will help transform education and the lives of children with dyslexia

in the U.S. and around the world. To us, changing the lives of children is what matters most,” he added. “Through our grandchildren’s experiences, Hal and I learned about the incredible challenges dyslexia poses in school and daily life,” Marjorie Roberts said. “When children struggle and think less of themselves, it’s heartbreaking. We’ve seen firsthand how working with well-trained educators can help students turn their experiences around, move beyond their challenges and embrace what — for many — becomes their superpower to problem-solve differently,” she added. In Tennessee, an estimated 4.7% of students in grades K - 12 have dyslexia, a learning disability that impacts literacy abilities, yet affects everyone who has it differently. By establishing an academy and research center, findings will impact education provided at the academy in addition to shaping future research. ICE! Returns for Gaylord’s 40th A Country Christmas

Kicking off Nov. 10, this year’s brand new ICE! theme is “The Polar Express” told through masterfully hand-carved ice sculptures.

et ready for the chillest event of the holiday season as ICE!, returns to Gaylord Opryland as part of its 40th annual A Country Christmas event beginning November 10, 2023 through January 1, 2024. (Note: The lights turn on November 9!). Using more than 2 million pounds — or 1,000 tons — of ice, the resort will debut a brand-new ICE! theme, The Polar Express, based upon the Warner Bros. film. The enchanting tale will be brought to life in ice sculpture form by a team of 40 world-class ice artisans from Harbin, China. The attraction features nine scenes in hand-carved sculptures made of ice. The holiday celebration continues with a brand-new Christmas dinner show and a variety of festive activities, including ice skating, ice tubing, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus and more. For the first time ever, the attraction features five, two-story interac-

tive ice slides, which is more than past exhibitions. Colored ice, clear ice and LED lights are all used to create the display. For capacity management, resort access will be guaranteed after 12 noon for overnight guests and indoor/outdoor ticket reservation holders only every Friday, Saturday and Sunday during A Country Christmas as well as daily November 20 - 23 and December 15 - 31, 2023. Visitors without room reservations or ticketed event reservations should arrive on site prior to Noon CT on the aforementioned dates and are welcome to enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening on property. Quick Bits • County Health Departments are offering FREE FLU VACCINATIONS to the public beginning Nov. 1, 2023, at more than 100 locations across Tennessee. All Tennesseans, six months old and older, are eligible to get the flu vaccine. Visit the Tennessee Department of Health’s Fight Flu webpage to find a location, its address and hours of operation. No appointment needed. Nationally, 7.5 million illnesses, 105,000 hospitalizations, and 6,300 deaths could be prevented annually if more people choose to get a flu vaccine. Guiding Kids Along Takes Untold Amounts of Patience, Empathy and Compassion

he world is wild and increasingly stressful, and some say it’s more important than ever to provide emotional stability for kids. It’s as if more is being asked of parents than ever before: Be strong so your kids can be strong! But in a world where so many difficult challenges face us, can parents really be blamed if a child gets “messed up?” And what’s a “messed-up kid,” anyway? A psychologically troubled youth. An unhappy person with a feeling of not quite fitting in or being understood by others. From the time your baby is born, you work around the clock to keep everything copacetic, get everything tackled, dote on, love on and everything else and maybe even carve out a little personal time for yourselves, too. Is it possible to not mess up a kid? First, if you’re asking this question, you’re probably doing a much better job than you’re giving yourself credit for. “Am I messing up my kid?” is a question that can leave you sleepless. It can also fill you with insecurity in your parenting that isn’t helpful at all. See, there are no “grades” for parenting and it’s not pass/ fail. Just because you yell or your child has an adverse reaction to something you do doesn’t mean your kids will have permanent problems all tied to mom and dad’s behavior. But being OK with YOU is a big tip off to whether or not your kids will fare OK, also. “Not all children from two-parent homes come from emotionally stable homes, and some children from one-parent homes come from very stable homes,” said Adele Faber years ago, before writing the best-selling How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk (Scribner; 2013). “These are stressful times for all parents. It’s important that parents know how to take care of their own emotional needs, so that they can help their children take care of theirs,” she added.

SO ... HOW TO MESS UP YOUR KIDS It’s super easy to feel overwhelmed by raising kids no matter what year it is. Working parents are stretched thin; lots of times there’s no additional support with family living far away; and then there’s the guilt found in taking time for yourself when you could be helping with the baby. Here are the areas where “things” can go south in your parenting with input from the parenting books, Screamfree Parenting by Hal Edward Runkel (Broadway; 2007); Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (Seventh Edition; The American Academy of Pediatrics); and the aforementioned How to Talk So Kids Will Listen.

MESSING UP KIDS!

1. DOING EVERYTHING FOR THEM

In an effort to make your day-to-day life easier, you may be doing your child a disservice by doing everything they could do for themselves. The best way to raise independent children is to allow them to practice being independent. So what if milk gets spilled onto the counter instead of making it into the glass because you didn’t step in to help? Kids learn a lot by trying things on their own. Plus, allowing them to try to master new skills shows them that you believe in them, and that helps build confidence. Get used to saying, “You can do it.”

2. PASSING NEGATIVE JUDGEMENT ON THEM

Many of the ways parents try to guide their kids can provoke shame. Saying things like, “You’d lose your head if it wasn’t glued on!” or “Can’t you stop giving me trouble for one minute?!” makes a kid feel ashamed. Resist the urge to ridicule in ways that seem harmless, because it’s not nice, in fact, it’s hurtful.

3. SPEAKING FOR YOUR CHILD

Each time you solve your child’s problems and speak up in their place, you take away some of their power. While you may be filling in blanks to speed things up or calm your own anxiousness about wanting them to succeed, speaking for your child prevents them from gaining confidence and learning to stand up for themselves.

4. ALLOWING UNLIMITED TIME ON TECH

Research says too much time on electronics can cause behavior issues, such as an elementary child using a tablet or computer for more than two hours a day. Establish family rules for your electronics and stick to them such as no devices during meals; no electronics during family night; no screens in bedrooms. Also consider a digital detox for the family one night a week.

5. ARGUING A LOT IN FRONT OF THE KIDS

Whether you like it or not, you are a role model for your children 100 percent of the time. Kids will mimic your relationship patterns later in life. While one, two or several arguments with your spouse (in front of your kids) isn’t devastating, chronic fighting and conflict are. If your marriage is filled with strife, consider couples therapy because being able to calmly communicate in front of children is imperative to their future relationships and happiness — and yours.

6. SPANKING YOUR KIDS

Research has long shown the negative effects of spaning on children’s social-emotional development, selfregulation and cognitive development. New research shows that spanking alters children’s brain response in ways similar to severe maltreatment and increases the perception of threats.

7. NOT TEACHING SOCIAL SKILLS

Social skills are linked to greater success in school and better relationships with peers. Role play and teach your kids how to introduce themselves, make eye contact, ask questions, follow directions, follow through. These simple basics will be used all through life.

The Good Enough Mother “The Good Enough Mother,” concept, coined by the late pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, is an approach to parenting that involves being sensitive, responsive and adaptive to your children’s needs and developmental abilities. It stands in direct contrast to the “perfect parent,” recognizing that you can’t be everything all the time and that’s more than OK. In fact, it’s better, and here’s why: The world isn’t perfect. Here’s a look at the two approaches: • A perfect mother might do everything in her power to prevent her kids from experiencing negative emotions, anticipating or immediately responding to any sign of discomfort. • A good enough mother responds to her young kids quickly because she knows they need to be protected and soothed. But as her kids grow, she recognizes she can’t sustain that level of attentiveness — and doesn’t need to. Instead, she’ll allow them to be uncomfortable, disappointed, frustrated or sad. Through these small, manageable “failures” (as we often define them) her children grow — mentally and emotionally — and are better prepared for the world. (please turn the page)

FEATURE 8. DOING THEIR HOMEWORK FOR THEM

When you do your child’s homework for them, the teacher actually ends up working with compromised information. The homework may show that your child understands when he really doesn’t. It’s better for your child to submit incorrect, incomplete work than to pretend that they understand and are ready to move on.

9. BEING INCONSISTENT WITH DISCIPLINE

Kids will test you to see how far they can go to get away with stuff and that’s why you instill house rules and limits. Yet, if you don’t enforce them consistently your kids will walk all over you. When you are inconsistent about what’s OK and what’s not, you undermine your authority with wishy washy boundaries. While is may be impossible to be consistent 100 percent of the time, aim for it. Kids need to know what you expect, because it helps them to make good decisions and to understand what they can and cannot do.

10. WITHHOLDING AFFECTION This is huge. Science supports the idea that warmth and affection expressed by parents to their children results in lifelong positive outcomes. Children who do not have affectionate parents tend to have lower self-esteem and to feel more

alienated, hostile, aggressive and anti-social. From the moment you bring a baby home from the hospital, be sure to hold, touch and rock them. As they get older, be playful by doing fun activities like dancing together or creating silly games like “kissing monster.” Make hugging a part of your daily routine and use affection while disciplining your child, too, by giving a hug to ensure them that even if you’re not happy with their behavior, you still love them. Snuggle when they want too, but also be aware of each child’s individual comfort level so you don’t smother! Parenting — in its essence — is training your child on how to be a future adult and it really isn’t about you. It’s about how they learn from you and through you, your daily actions — even your slip-ups, momentary anger, moments of regret and more. These 10 examples of how you can mess up a child are only that — examples. Your children are a part of your life, not an accessory, and they want to live life with you. As you go along through the days and years, remember that there’s always a new opportunity to teach — even when you make a mistake. Even if you feel like you have already screwed up your kids, it’s never too late to make a change in your parenting style in order to connect more with your family. Keep trying. And if parenting is so much of a challenge that you don’t feel equipped to handle it, seek individual help. Kids need their parents to be present, healthy and loving. That may be a big ask — but it’s the most important one. Susan Day is editor of this publication and a mom of four.

PRACTICING GRATITUDE We are more than slaves to our feelings and circumstances. Evidence suggests that we can actively choose gratitude — and that doing so raises our happiness. BY ASHLEY TALMADGE

t the restaurant, a young girl fidgets in her chair. The server places a tall glass of milk in front of her. “What do you say?” reminds her mother. “Thank you,” responds the child dutifully. As parents, we often play a role in this scene. But what are we teaching? Ben Hall, father of 9-year-old Ella, asks, “Does the child feel thankful when she says ‘thank you’ after being reminded? I don’t think so.” Reflecting on his own childhood, Hall believes such an interaction merely “forces good behavior or manners.” He suggests real gratitude is “similar to appreciation and awareness,” something he and Ella’s mother are mindful of teaching their child. Experts suggest Hall is onto something. Certainly good manners are important. But true gratitude runs deeper and does more than foster civility. Several recent studies suggest that gratitude is the single best predictor of well-being. A child who feels and expresses gratitude for the people, experiences and things in their life is more likely to demonstrate resilience, do well in school and build lasting social connections. They are also less likely to suffer from depression or engage in antisocial behavior. But can gratitude be taught? Wendy Mather, a social worker and former facilitator with The Virtues Project, believes a lot of the teaching amounts to good modeling. She says, parents “must cultivate the virtue of gratitude for themselves before they teach it to their children … it’s more than just writing ‘thank you’ cards. It’s the ability to convey our feelings of appreciation and thanks out loud and silently for the good and not so good in life,” she adds. The language we choose communicates much. Occasional venting to your spouse can provide relief at the end of a tough week. But it shouldn’t be common fodder for conversation with your kids. Instead of describing the cashier as “crabby,” we can show empathy by saying, “She must not be having a very good day.” Or, we can focus on the positive: “That woman behind us was so understanding when I couldn’t find my bank card. I really appreciated her patience.” As Mather says, “Model patience and understanding and optimism when it comes to dealing with trials and tribulations. Life’s challenges are our biggest teachers.” In addition to modeling, Mather encourages parents to “catch your child in the act of practicing gratitude,” and label it. During a snack you might say, “You are grateful for that juicy pear; I can tell by how much you smile as you eat it!” Or, when your child becomes immersed in collecting stones at the creek rather than sticking to your scheduled hike, take time to notice their appreciation of nature’s offerings. Parenting can be all-encompassing. Busy moms and dads find it challenging to eat well, get enough sleep and exercise regularly. But according to Mather, such self care is important in our practice of gratitude. She says, “We tend to run on auto pilot when we feel run down, tired and stressed. We can truly savor and appreciate our riches, in whatever form … when we take care of ourselves.” Ben Hall believes, “we teach gratitude in times of quiet reflection.” He echoes the need for breathing space, both as a father and as a family. In today’s 24/7 whirlwind of technology-enhanced communication and entertainment, creating those islands of tranquility can be difficult. Yet, intentional transitions between the varied spheres of our lives — work, school, community, home — allow us to reflect on, learn from and appreciate our experiences. Hall says a period of silence — or a blessing — before a meal allows us to consider the presence of the food, the cook, the origin of the food and its presence on your table. Rather than an entitlement, the food becomes a blessing and a gift — one for which we are truly grateful. And the best part? Gratitude produces more of the same. A grateful person is more likely to reciprocate and to provide support to a third party, thus contributing to stronger familial and community bonds. As Mather says, “When we express appreciation we attract gratitude. It’s a language of love and connection.”

13 Ways to Grow Gratitude It’s common sense: Choosing to focus on good things makes you feel better over focusing on bad things. • Choose language of optimism. Focus on gifts, blessings and abundance rather than needs and entitlements. • Ask for help. Even when it’s not “time prudent,” ask your kids to help with household tasks. • Thank specifically. Let your child know exactly why you’re grateful. “Thank you for reading to Sammy this afternoon. He really loved snuggling with you.” • Best of the day. At bedtime, ask your child to describe what was best about her day. • Create a gratitude jar. Write (or draw) the things you’re grateful for and collect them in a jar. Read them as a group each week. • Make a collage. Use pictures, words, fabric and small objects to represent the things you’re grateful for, and discuss as a family. • Volunteer. Find organizations in your community with kid-friendly helping options. • Pass it around. Sit in a circle. Each person tells some thing they like about the person on the right. • Random acts of kindness. At the drive-thru, pay for the car behind you — and let your child in on the secret. • Don’t overindulge. Resist the “Everyone has___!” and “I need it for ___!” arguments. • Make them earn it. Extra chores and helping neighbors are great ways to make some pocket money. • Turn it around. When faced with a challenge, find the silver lining by asking: “What did I learn from this?” “Is there something I can be grateful for?”
