Publisher’s Message It is an understatement to say that our lives stopped being normal in mid-March of this year. The effects of the pandemic have been overwhelming to parents homeschooling their children, the unemployed or furloughed, 2020 Seniors missing out on walking for graduation, kids isolated from their friends and peers, our vulnerable elderly, essential workers, and medical providers. In the midst of all this, we are also witnessing a call to transform social injustices, race and health disparities, and examine what has rumbled beneath the surface for centuries. However, I think one thing we can all agree upon is that kindness and empathy are not only free they’re priceless; so be generous with both every chance you get. All of this has also impacted the way we celebrate and socialize, including Independence Day. Though some of our traditional celebrations may be different, this year it is especially important to recognize Fort Campbell, and all the sacrifices our soldiers and their families make to ensure our freedom. At Clarksville Living Magazine we are sincerely grateful and proud of them all. There’s plenty to celebrate about what all is in this month’s issue as well. We’re beyond ecstatic to see that our calendar of events is beginning to bounce back and fill up! Be sure to check it out and start planning your month, beginning on page 22. Our new staff writer, Paige Eisemann, has two important and inspiring articles about some of our city’s most thoughtful businesses, organizations and volunteers, selflessly donating their time and efforts to make a difference in the lives of so many. Including (but not limited to) offering FREE “Summer Camp in a Bag” which includes: books, literary resources and art supplies! Read about them both, starting on pages 12 and 16. Please be careful when you’re out and about; remember to drink plenty of fluids, wear a mask and plenty of sunscreen to stay safe. As always, thank you for picking us up!

fter being isolated for months during the COVID-19 crisis has many people searching for different ways to cope and heal. For some, especially those who are keen to connect on an earthly level, utilizing crystals is one way to stay centered and calm during particularly rocky times. While many modern approaches to medicine are lifesaving and good, the more holistic and natural methods of caring for your physical, mental, and

By Taylor Lieberstein spiritual health should not be ignored. Holistic medicine and practices can really help bring out the best your body and mind have to offer. Opened in 2015, Valhalla's Gate, is Clarksville’s first and only holistic health and metaphysics store. This gem of a store specializes in items and services designed for people looking to naturally enhance their overall well-being. The shop features local artisan products such as handmade candles, air plants and handmade crystal jewelry, essential oils, fresh herbs, tea blends, lotions, healing stones and more. They also carry health care alternatives such as natural remedies for anxiety, skin irritations and insomnia. Valhalla’s Gate also offers a variety of services, including tarot reading, monthly open discussions and special events.

Flecha said between Austin Peay State University and Fort Campbell Clarksville’s Pagan community is rapidly increasing. An alternative health store was something the community desperately needed. She opened her store in 2015 to accommodate that community. “I raised all my children using natural products over pharmaceuticals whenever I could,” said Flecha “When treating any issue, anything that comes from the earth is always better alternative”.

If you are new to using crystals, a great way to harness their healing power is by using healing stones for manifesting your intentions and what you want to create in your life. When it comes to crystal basics, these otherworldly rocks connect us to the Earth because they are tangible, physical forms that have powerful vibrations. With every thought and intention, these crystals pick up on your unique vibrational energy and amplify the positive vibes that you are cultivating. The seemingly complex process of how crystals work can be easily explained in three sentences. Anything that you focus on or put your energy into expands. Energy follows intentions and thought. Crystals amplify intentions. Valhalla’s Gate carries a large variety of healing crystals- Amethyst, Tourmaline and Clear quartz are three of the most popular and for good reason. Amethyst is good for mood swings, anger, and anxiety. Amethyst is known for

being a stone of spiritual protection and purification, many who attend anonymous/sobriety programs find it helpful to work with it to curb overindulgence and give up bad habits. Placing Amethyst in your home, car, or on your person can give you the feeling you are surrounded in a protective bubble of light. Black Tourmaline is a protective stone which repels and blocks negative energies and psychic attack. Black Tourmaline also aids in the removal of negative energies within a person or a space. Clear Quartz is known as the "master healer" and amplifies energy and thought, as well as the effect of other crystals. Valhalla’s Gate carries roughly 30 local artisans’ products in the store. Such as Rune in the Moon’s popular handcrafted candles and soaps. The spell-ready candles are made with 100% biodegradable soy wax that burn clean, are GMO and pesticide free. Each candle is blessed with intention using organic herbal blends, natural fragrance oils, and reiki infused crystals. Scents vary from Alchemy and Awaken to Indigo Eye and Lilith. Cia Bailey operates a local plant business, Fiscus and Fig. Bailey propagates and pots all the plant life for Valhalla’s Gate. Typically, she has a variety of low maintenance plants such as snake plants, pothos, philodendron, cacti, and succulents for sale. Plants have many benefits such as air purification and healing abilities. Being among plants helps lower blood pressure and improve focus and mood and they are beautiful to look at. Fiscus and Fig sources their air plants, baskets, pots, and other supplies from small businesses across the United States.

She is certified in Reiki Healing and incorporates the healing energy of crystals into her work.

Additionally, the store hosts a meeting the first Thursday of each month and it is open to anyone in the community. They pick a topic to discuss and welcome anyone's feedback on that subject. Everyone's holistic practice is different which makes it exciting to hear the range in perspectives. This is a great opportunity for those new to Paganism or just interested in hearing more about it to come and talk to likeminded people. Hopefully, classes and special events will be able to start back later this month. In the past they hosted candle making and stained-glass classes. They are looking to hold some exciting new events such as a tarot class and a possible collaboration class with a local juice bar. Additionally, they offer Aura Photography a couple times a year. The specialty type of photography is the latest spiritual trend gaining popularity among the holistic community.

ummer camps of all varieties have been affected by COVID-19 closures. One local summer camp program has found a way to continue making a powerful impact on Clarksville. I recently had the opportunity to learn more about this program from Ellie Crain, Site Coordinator of Project Transformation Clarksville. Crain is a Clarksville native who is a Martin Methodist College alumna and recent graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary. Crain is now in her sixth summer serving with Project Transformation. Project Transformation Tennessee began as part of a national organization in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2017 that Clarksville became the site of our very own satellite program.

It's your serve intentional community, and explore a call to ministry and service. Through the power of relationships and by leveraging a unique collaboration with local churches and community partners, Project Transformation equips young adults for leadership in the church and the world, empowers children to achieve their God-given potential, and supports churches in being in ministry with their neighbors. (Source: www. projecttransformation.org)

According to their website, the mission of Project Transformation is to transform communities by engaging children grades 1-6, college-age young adults, and churches in purposeful relationships. Chapters are affiliated with the national organization but operate as independent organizations governed by their own board of directors. Each chapter partners is responsible for building relationships with partnering churches and recruiting volunteers and young adult interns to implement the program.” Every year in the program, children work to improve their literacy skills, social-emotional learning, and spiritual development through participating in high-quality, out-of-school time programs led by college-age young adults. Hundreds of college age young adults commit a summer or year of their lives to serve and build relationships with children and youth from low-income communities, live in

Since 2017, children and families in Montgomery County have been participating in the program based at New Providence United Methodist Church. The program provided a summer camp environment for children that included lunch, classes in reading (called “Reading Rockstars” and “Bookworms”), Art, Math, Science and “Movement Minutes” designed to create fun physical activity with ties to a literacy component. All of these activities

were facilitated by a group of eight young adult interns hailing from around the country, who lived in community at Austin Peay State University for the duration of their nine-week summer internship. Not only were the children and families benefiting from Project Transformation, but the interns were learning about leadership skills, classroom management and more. Fridays were devoted to interns learning about bridging area churches of all denominations and the community, and opportunities for serving as they move forward through life. Through opportunities focused on empowering young people, servant leadership, and holistic development the interns formed relationships and developed their own discernment of purpose. (Source: www.projecttransformation.org) Interns learned about middle Tennessee through field trips and opportunities to meet with community leaders such as Circuit Court Judge Katherine Olita. Local volunteers from churches and businesses throughout Montgomery County donated their time to preparing lunches, reading with children, and more.

Project Transformation Tennessee reached out to families who have participated in the past, as well as partner churches from all over the state. Guidelines from the CDC as well as local and federal leaders were considered. The responses were clear. Even if children would not be able to participate in person

at satellite programs, families expressed needs for food, educational programming (such as books, literacy resources, and art supplies) and social/emotional and health lessons. The pandemic shined a light on social inequalities. Families began to struggle more with food insecurity, unemployment, and insufficient digital access to learning resources. Leaders and volunteers quickly went to work and created a modified approach for this summer, which is now fully implemented. The modifications have strengthened the impact Project Transformation has made in our Clarksville area, and will continue to fill needs when families are most vulnerable.

An educational journey from the first steps to adolescence.

According to Crain, a team of three to five volunteers assist her Monday through Thursday of each week at NPUMC preparing and distributing sack lunches. On Thursdays, “summer camps in a bag” are distributed in addition to lunches. This year dozens of volunteers (as well as interns from previous summers) are serving as pen pals with participating children, since they are not able to give their time for in person reading and making connections.

Local businesses, organizations and churches have donated supplies to create activity bags such as a journaling bag for social/emotional learning which included a journal, writing supplies, and instructions for self-guided lessons on using writing as an outlet for feelings and emotions. Movement activity bags have included frisbees, sidewalk chalk, bubble wands and stress balls along with prepared lessons on how children can engage in their own physical activity lessons at home. Interns with the Project Transformation national network have created virtual programming to compliment the activity bags being given to participants. In the coming weeks, interactive online learning circles will be launched so that students have the opportunity to complete activities with volunteers and directors, rather than as self-guided projects. Crain expresses how important the time and donations of the community are to the success of the program. “Even in this summer of change, we are finding new ways to be together while apart. We are leaning in to transformation happening through relationships”, says Crane.

Project Transformation Tennessee currently engages over eighty college-age young adults in ministry and service with more than seven hundred children and youth in nine site churches across Tennessee. Program data reports that 99% of the children who participate in the program maintain or improve their reading levels over the summer. 94% of young adult intern alumni report that Project Transformation prepared them for future leadership in their churches and communities. Project Transformation Clarksville remains open with spots available for children to participate and receive lunches every Monday-Thursday and activity bags in addition to lunch on Thursdays through July 23. giving back with urban ministries Urban Ministries Clarksville has quietly become one of the busiest programs in our city. When COVID-19 shut down many businesses in the area, families saw an increased need for assistance. Urban Ministries has a strong history answering the call and developing ways to meet the needs of Clarksville/Montgomery County, and all that is required is proof of residency. According to their website, United Methodist Urban Ministries/Clarksville District, Inc. was founded on June 28, 1984 as a nonprofit dedicated to meeting basic human needs of those who were living in the Clarksville/Montgomery County area. The office opened for operation in 1985 at 211 S. 3rd St. at the

Madison Street United Methodist Church. Although the original intention was to be an information and referral agency, it was quickly realized that the program needed to be offering direct client assistance for emergency food, shelter, utilities, medicine, and other areas. It was not long after the ministry began meeting these needs, that they observed a need to protect victims of domestic violence. The SafeHouse Domestic Violence Shelter as a sanctuary for battered women and their children was opened in 1991 as an answer to this need. The key to Urban Ministries’ past and current successful ministry rests in its alignment with client need, volunteer service provision, and its organizational structure. Their adherence to their

mission has resulted in a commitment to deal with the systemic problems of hunger, homelessness, and violence through our organization that “works” through an active Board of Directors, participating standing committee members, trained volunteers, and salaried staff. Today their work continues at 217 S. 3rd St. in downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Urban Ministries served Clarksvillians in many ways prior to the pandemic. They continue to carry out their mission and tradition through the Grace Assistance Program, a drop-in center that provides a safe and warm place for those who have nowhere else to turn. They also provide assistance for: • Monthly living expenses: such as food, shelter, and utility bills • Transportation • Prescription medications • Personal hygiene items • Blankets, fans, and air conditioners • Clothing and footwear for all ages • Children’s school supplies

April 2020 brought about a new need for our community. Businesses closed and many people found themselves out of work. Food insecurity became an issue for families who never expected it. Urban Ministries and a multitude of volunteers worked to create a plan to serve these families. Safety guidelines necessitated that recipients remain in their vehicles to limit social contact, so a drive -thru experience was implemented. Through the generous donations of Loaves and Fishes, Second Harvest Food Bank, Food Lion, Papa John’s, United Way, The Veteran’s Coalition, Manna Cafe and many others, their vision began to take shape. All week long, volunteers work to assemble food boxes in the gym at MSUMC. Volunteers use their own trucks and trailers to pick up donations around the area and as far away as Second Harvest in

Nashville. Boxes are lined up across the gym floor, awaiting food that is sorted and packed to be distributed to families. Thursdays bring a special kind of magic. Volunteers and staff begin setting up for distribution, the culmination of a week of hard

work and preparation. Tents are erected to provide shade, cones are placed in the parking lots, and the Clarksville Police Department creates a traffic pattern for the hundreds of cars that will pass through. Food distribution begins at 2PM, and it rarely slows down until close at 7PM. Cars line up at the Commerce Street parking lot of MSUMC, often creating a line up Hiter Street and spilling onto Madison. Smiling children wave from waiting vehicles, happy volunteers joyfully greeting families as they place overflowing food boxes into waiting vehicles’ trunks as vehicles parade around the loop in the parking lot. Gratitude and happiness are evident not only in the faces of those receiving food boxes, but those working to distribute them as well. The program began with 31 boxes of food being distributed on their first scheduled giveaway.. The month of April 2020 closed with 859 food boxes being shared with families. That averages out to 38,655 pounds of food in one month! May and June saw steady increases. On June 18, 2020, 429 food boxes were distributed- so the program is on track to distribute well over 1,600 food boxes for the month! All of this is possible through the generosity and kindness of volunteers and local businesses. So many have found a way to contribute to this ministry. Cici’s pizza has donated pizza to feed volunteers, donations come in both monetary and physical items from individuals, businesses, churches and organizations around the community. While the food distribution program is continuously growing, Safe Place Family Transitional Center continues their ministry, and volunteers are needed. United Way assists to provide support and shelter for homeless families with children while they transition to permanent housing. Clarksville’s homeless population still depends on the Grace Program for hygiene basics such as sunblock, razors, and the “Shower Up” program. The Urban Ministries office has been able to reopen for a

few hours a week to provide utility and prescription vouchers for those who need assistance. Where needs are changing, Urban Ministries has answered the call without forgetting the valuable assistance they already provide for Montgomery County in a multitude of ways. Work continues in service of our community, and fulfillment of their mission of dealing with systematic problems in our area. CEO/Executive Director CC Carmack-Wheeler sums things up best with this quote, “For more than 35 years, Urban Ministries has been responding to the crisis needs of our community. While COVID 19 posed unique challenges, we are thankful for the opportunity to continue serving our neighbors in need, and are deeply grateful to all who support our missions. I am also grateful to the extraordinary team of staff and volunteers who show up week after week for all of our programs to serve and give back.” If you are interested in participating in the Food Distribution program, all that is required is a drivers license or piece of mail verifying residency in Clarksville/Montgomery County. Distributions are every Thursday 2:00-7:00PM at 110 Commerce Street, the rear lot of Madison Street United Methodist Church.

remember that social distancing guidelines apply, and clothing/food distribution is not available at the office at this time due to COVID-19. up any mimosa recipe! Use the ice cream, sherbet, or sorbet flavor of your choice and mix with champagne or prosecco. TOTAL TIME: 5 Minutes INGREDIENTS • 1 bottle of Champagne or Prosecco • 2 pints of sorbet (any flavor) • Mint or fruit to garnish INSTRUCTIONS Add a few small scoops of sorbet to the glass. Pour Prosecco or Champagne over. Garnish with fruit slices or mint. Cherry Lemonade Vodka Slushies A skinny and refreshing summer treat with made with sugar free lemonade and cherry vodka. A grown up slushie that will be perfect for hot summer days!

INGREDIENTS: 6 c. watermelon cubes, seeds removed* 1/4 c. granulated sugar 1 T. freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 c. Moscato {or other slightly sweet white wine} additional Moscato for serving INSTRUCTIONS: Place watermelon cubes in a food processor or blender.

Just 4 simple ingredients plus fresh fruit and pretty garnishes!

Blend until smooth. Place a colander over a large bowl or 9x13-inch glass baking dish. Pour processed watermelon through the strainer to remove the pulp, reserving the strained juice.

Stir granulated sugar and lemon juice into the watermelon juice until the sugar is fully dissolved. Stir in Moscato. INGREDIENTS • 2 tsp lemonade mix (I use 2 packets Crystal Light Lemonade or Limeade) • 3 fl oz Cherry Vodka • 1 1/2 cups water • 2 cups ice • Black Cherries (fresh or packaged) • Basil for garnish (optional) INSTRUCTIONS Add all ingredients into a high power blender and blend until smooth and slushie texture. Pour into 2 glasses and sip away! Watermelon Moscato Slush Just grab a big juicy watermelon and some semisweet white wine to whip up this refreshingly delicious summer fun! TOTAL TIME: 3 Hrs & 15 Min

INGREDIENTS • 1 - 12 oz can frozen pineapple juice concentrate thawed • 1 - 6 oz can frozen limeade concentrate thawed • 4 1/2 cups cold water • 1 liter club soda chilled • Assorted fruits Continued on page 20

Place the bowl or baking dish in the freezer and freeze the mixture for 2 to 3 hours, stirring with a fork every 45 minutes or so to break up ice crystals. When ready to serve, spoon watermelon slush into a wine (or other) glass, filling the glass about 3/4 full.

We have a use for all that useless information...

Pour in additional wine and stir. Garnish as desired. NOTES * Six cups watermelon cubes, pureed and strained, yields about 4 cups watermelon juice. You can use watermelon juice released and collected when cutting up a whole watermelon instead, for all or part of the pureed juice. Fizzy Pineapple Punch This sweet and easy to make pineapple punch will be the hit of any party!

(such as strawberries raspberries, blueberries, oranges, limes, and pineapple) • Garnishes such as fresh mint INSTRUCTIONS Pour thawed pineapple juice concentrate and thawed limeade concentrate in a large pitcher. Add cold water and most of the club soda, reserving about 1/3 cup. Stir to combine and chill until cold. Add ice cubes and assorted fruits to serving glasses and pour in chilled punch. Garnish as desired and top off glasses with a splash of extra club soda for extra "fizz".

• 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 8 limes) • Ice • 3 medium limes, thinly sliced • 3 tsp of simple syrup (optional for a sweeter taste)

INGREDIENTS • 3 cups blanco tequila • 2 cups orange liqueur, such as Cointreau or Triple Sec

RECIPE NOTES Make ahead: The pitcher can be made, without the ice and sliced limes, up to 1 day ahead. Cover and store in the refrigerator and add the ice and limes before serving. CHANGING THE TART OR SWEET LEVELS: If you prefer sweeter margaritas, you can add a bit of simple syrup to taste. Or, if your prefer more tart margaritas, you can add more lime juice.

NOTES 1. Can be made alcoholic by adding a splash of vodka or rum to the serving glasses. 2. For extra gorgeous presentation, freeze mint into ice cubes and use in serving glasses. 3-2-1 Pitcher Margaritas A great margarita isn’t complicated, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If you have tequila, orange liqueur (such as Cointreau or Triple Sec), and plenty of limes on hand, you have everything you need. Just follow a ratio of three parts tequila, two parts orange liqueur, and one part lime juice.

each glass as needed. Scoop a couple of lime slices into each glass when serving.

White Wine Mojito The mojito makes a great pitcher drink because it's so simple. For a fun twist, mix one up using white wine. It swaps rum for vino and adds sparkling lemonade to the mix. You'll love how easy it is and your guests will fall for the familiar-yet-unique flavor. TOTAL TIME: 8 mins YIELD: 6-8 Servings

INSTRUCTIONS Place the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and ice in a large pitcher, and stir to combine. Top with the lime slices. Let sit for 5 minutes to allow for some of the ice to melt and mellow the margaritas. Pour into glasses, adding more ice from the pitcher to
