rag Racing lost one of its colourful characters, when Norm was suddenly taken unwell, and passed away in hospital later that same day, on 1 February. A forthright character, and an accomplished builder of excellent quality race cars; his drag racing journey spanned fifty years with some notable accomplishments along the way. Norm’s working life included many years working in the world of Indy Car and F1, as he worked for March Engineering before joining the Benetton team. The quality culture of top-level racing teams would serve Norm well in his own race car fabrications.

Notable achievements on track included the 1976 RAC altered championship win. This would be followed by a memorable underdog Pro Comp victory at Santa Pod in the 1979 World Series event. A new small block Chevy rear-engined dragster beat the strongest field of UK and Scandinavians assembled in the UK. A switch to old style slingshot dragster would see the Plan-X Chevy become the first methanol frontmotored car to dip into the sixes in the early 1980s. Despite other notable builds, the car that Norm will always be remembered for is his amazing twin-engined slingshot dragster - called Two Much.

A well-known figure at American nostalgia events, where he was a frequent visitor; there was still much Norm wanted to achieve in racing, despite being in his 70s, as the hunger was still burning strong. The newly named Wheeldon and Charman team were looking to keep moving forward with their nostalgia machines, with both Nigel and son James Charman as drivers alongside Norm himself. Nigel is committed to continue running the team in the future, as was Norm’s wish. We send our condolences and best wishes to his partner Mary at this very sad time. RIP Norm

Injection speculation

Although not officially confirmed, it is reported that Holley has closed the Hilborn Fuel Injection company. Founded after WWII by Stuart Hilborn, the company was acquired by Holley in 2019 and has been relatively low profile in recent times. Hilborn had previously enjoyed great success for almost 80 years from Indy to Bonneville and, of course, at drag strips everywhere. In 1948, with Howard Wilson behind the wheel, Stu Hilborn’s Streamliner was the first hot rod to reach 150mph. Initially mechanical, the company’s fuel injection systems later became electronic and, whilst the business may be no more, the Hilborn legacy will live on.

t’s rare for a car to be featured in both rival magazines of the era. That happened with the Kev Rooney-built ’63 Ford Consul Capri though, a car with added Special K. Even more of a rarity is for the same car to be featured once again, over 20 years later. Street Machine was first off the mark in the March ’99 issue. The then satin lilac painted car was actually Kev’s second such Capri, his first being a much greener affair that the magazine had featured in the November ’95 issue. This second-coming car is the one best associated with the builder though, it’s myriad of custom (kustom?) touches creating a cruiser the likes of which are not commonplace on these shores. With Kev discovering the supposed uprated motor under the bonnet was in fact a mundane 1200cc he switched it

4. Stripping the car revealed multiple layers of paint. Note the holes on the back panel for the Austin rear lights

7.

A serious amount of new steel was welded in including rear quarter panels, inner and outer sills, floors, outriggers, wing ends, and lower halves of the doors

for a 1500GT lump, and then a rebuilt 1560cc engine. Repairs to the floor and crossmembers were undertaken and it was then time for the Special K. A custom front grille was fabricated, with the quarter bumpers flanking it being formed from an FE Victor item finished off with Dagmaresque MoonEyes bullets. Ali plate was fitted behind the headlights and the lenses themselves fitted with half-moon covers, whilst the sidelights were switched to a pair from an MG Magnette enhanced with another pair of bullets. The door handles were binned, with Dempsey door pushes taking over actuation duties, and one-piece door glass was fitted along with Kev-fabricated fender skirts. A trio of coils were lopped off the front springs, whilst reversed eye springs and lowering blocks brought down the rear. Datsun 160J

sill trims enhanced the side profile, and the rear was given a radically different look with the addition of three Austin A50 lights on each side mounted on a patterned ali plate. The rear bumper was pirated from a Triumph Dolomite with its centre section cut out and Austin Maxi under riders welded to each end so they flanked the Rover P6 license plate holder. The rear-end custom treatment was finished off with a faux continental kit moulded into the boot lid, along with twin aerials mounted beneath the rear window surround. The Capri rolled on its stock 13-inch steel rims fitted with Triumph 2000 caps, modified by Kev, and whitewall flapped 155 x 13 tyres. The interior was retrimmed in lilac and white vinyl, complemented by lilac carpet with white edging. A Mk3 Zodiac ‘strip’ speedo was fitted, as was the steering

15. The cracked Hillman steering wheel was refurbished and painted white

Cover story

Kev sort of stuck to that plan and finished off the A pick-up, but instead of selling Be-Bop-A-Lula, as the Capri was known, he gave it a makeover. It was in this reincarnated guise that the car appeared in the October ’02 issue of this very

publication. Rightly so the Capri graced the cover, just as it does this time round. Drivetrain upgrades included fitting Capri II front legs with up-rated springs, along with Escort rack and pinion steering, and an

white then fine line tape was applied to form the pinstriping, before the Watson-esque scallops were painted in purple velvet with Fiat Rosso Bougainville fogging. That was then back-masked and the car given a fresh

anti-roll bar all mounted from a homemade crossmember. Body-wise, the continental kit was given the elbow, as were the twin aerials. The chrome tape on the roof was peeled off and replaced with several coats of Isuzu magenta basecoat topped off with House of Kolor magenta ‘flake and plenty of clear lacquer. Kev painted the main body

coat of the original purple primer (read lilac base coat with added matting agent). Many hours were then spent laying on 50 litres of lacquer, with plenty of blocking back between coats. The interior was pretty much untouched, save for the addition of laminated switch knobs and a shorter gear lever topped off

The paint colours are special mixes by Terry, with the roof featuring large metal flake and crystals having been added to the clear coats for an enhanced finish. The dummy lake pipes are the ones fitted by Kev Rooney, but new fender skirts had to be fabricated after the rear quarter panels had been replaced

with a pool ball knob. The Datsun sill trims were removed to allow for the fitting of a pair of homemade unfunctional lake pipes, and the Triumph caps made way for ’59 Pontiac Bonneville Flippers with added bullets. The signature draw pull front grille was also a casualty, being replaced with floating bars in the same custom surround. Our feature ended in the same vein as the one in Street Machine some 3 years previously, the Capri may well be up for sale. The difference this time was that a price was mooted, offers in the region of £5500.

On the move

Kev did sell the Capri, but not for another couple of years or so. By that point in time it had already taken on a fresh guise. The scallops were gone and the car painted Rover Amaranth Purple, which flipped as the light changed With help from both Kev and Al Sadler, I have attempted to piece together the path the Capri took from when it was first sold on. There may be some blanks, however, so apologies to anyone who owned the car but hasn’t been given a name check.

First up it was owned by Kev Jerrett, who had it for quite some time before selling it to Mark Sadler from Edmonton, North London. It was he who along with his son Al switched the engine for a Pinto and the tranny to an auto. The Capri then moved to Scotland, where it was owned by Stuart Archibald at some stage, before ultimately crossing the border again and nestling in Great Yarmouth in the hands of Michael Pilgrim. By then the car was in a sorry state and was passed around several body shops in an attempt to restore it to its former glory. The

Watson-esque scallops were painted in purple velvet

Kev and the Capri as they looked at the time of the Street Machine feature in 1999. Note the chrome tape running along the roof, the inspiration for which came from Ed Roth’s ’57 Chevy

The Capri made it onto the cover of our October ’02 issue, as did Kev’s Model A pick-up pictured in the background

There’s nothing new about a frenched aerial, but how about one that’s frenched and tunnelled?

One of the highlights for Terry was that he was able to re-do and save the much talked about frenched aerial. Frenched in LED rear lights have replaced the two banks of Austin illuminators, but those can easily be reinstated if the need arises. The original Capri axle is still in situ, although it now runs an RS2000 diff

Terry is content with having achieved what he set out to do, preserving the Capri whilst subtly bringing it up to date. Michelle is just happy that all the swearing is over

project never came to fruition though, and it was ultimately put up for sale once again. The current owner, Terry Barton, spotted the ad and jumped straight on it. “It was a calling I guess,” Terry confided. “I knew the car well and just had to save it, despite the work it still needed. It took three attempts to buy it though as twice I was told it was already sold. Persistence won through in the end, however.” That was in May ’22, but he didn’t embark on working on the car until October that year, finishing it off the next July. Terry is the man behind Bartons Bodyworks in Suffolk and although he concentrates on modern vehicles nowadays, he has restored a great number of classics in the past. That experience put him in good stead for the task ahead which is just as well as there was plenty for him to sort out. “The welding that had been done was good, but heat build-up had warped some panels. The panel gaps were awful, and the doors wouldn’t close properly. The wiring was a fire hazard, and when sorting that I found the original clutch pedal tucked up behind the dash – it’s still there. This car fought me all the way. I referred to it as Christine’s sister as nothing went right the first time.” It was worth the effort though as Terry told me it drives lovely, handles well, has loads of poke, and cruises at 70mph with ease. What though does the man who started it all off, Kev Rooney, think of this latest incarnation? “I like the fact it’s been taken forward yet still retains its identity. It’s been given a new lease of life and is hopefully good for another 20 years.” Comments like that show the Capri still has that touch of Special K, as does the reception it received at the Hot Rod Supernationals and other shows last year. In somewhat of a recurring theme, Terry concluded my interview with him by commenting, “My job of saving it has been done. I’ve achieved what I wanted to and given it a new lease of life without taking away too much of its original look. I absolutely love it and enjoy being behind the wheel, but I have many other projects to feed so I would consider selling the Capri.” If you fancy taking on a piece of UK hot rodding history, you can call Terry at Bartons Bodyshop on 01440 760850. he first time the ‘because I can’ phrase came up during our conversation with Ron Haslett about the build of this car was when I asked why the radiator was in the boot. It was a genuine question, brought about by Ron’s admission that there had been some teething problems with the car’s unconventional cooling system. It’s nothing Ron can’t and hasn’t solved, but it did cause him to laugh. “I love that phrase!” he says, “It’s why we do what we do, isn’t it?” Regular readers of Custom Car, and indedd those that follow drag racing, will

no doubt be familiar with Ron’s name, if not with the man himself. Ron and his familiar Cortina estate were a regular fixture in the Street Eliminator class for many years, and through that involvement in drag racing he started Insane Creations. The direction of the business has changed a little over the years and it now provides Ron with a bit of a weekend and evening distraction from his day job as a sparky. Which, incidentally, is where he met the owner of the insane creation you see here, Sean Parker. That said, the car was actually built for another gentleman, Ralph Bates. That was

more than a decade ago now, but it was never finished.

Garden ornament

“I built it up to a rolling ’shell for Ralph, and he took it home to finish it,” explains Ron. “But then he got married, had kids all that, and the car just sat in his garden for about three years.” In fact, Ron started working for Sean at the same time as Ralph picked the car up from his workshop, which is where the three all neatly tie together. “Sean called me up one day and said ‘I’ve bought the car, can you finish it?’” recalls

The Build

1. Very early days, with a repro ’32 grille shell and the engine and box mocked up on what’s thought to be an old Rodline Model A chassis. Note how bulky that BMW powertrain is

4. Flip things upside down and you can see the tubular crossmembers and gearbox mounts, as well as the outriggers to meet up with the body

7.

2. Once the motor and gearbox positions were confirmed, Ron set to work building a substantial framework that the body fits neatly over

3. The equal length double A-arm front suspension is Ron’s own design, with the lower coilover mounts where you’d normally find the front spring U-bolts. Escort steering rack mounts ahead of the front crossmember

5. The rear crossmember was cut off and the entire BMW rear cradle welded in its place, giving positive location points for the rear suspension trailing arms and the differential

8.

6. Ron loves a bit of bead rolling, as evidenced by the floors, front and rear bulkheads and the tinwork in the boot area

9.

Chassis into paint and guide coat. Here you can better see the BMW rear cradle integrated into the Model A frame rails

With all the fabrication work done, and the chassis painted, it’s on to the home stretch, though still a long way to go

We like people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Ron added a couple of little beadrolled surprises for Sean. Can you tell what it is yet?

Ron with a grin. That was five years ago now and, while it was essentially completed last summer, it’s only really been driven on short shakedown runs since. “It’s definitely a fair weather car,” Sean laughs. “but I just want to get out and cruise around in it now. I’ve always wanted a hot rod but I’ve never had anything like this before. I had a Bond Bug when I was 18, and then I got into scooters for a while, and then motorbikes. Other than that, I’ve really just driven works vans.”

A baptism of fire this car is going to be then for sure.

So, let’s get into exactly how this unusual rod came about, as it’s clearly not a traditional hot rod in any sense of the term. “Ralph basically bought an old ’93 BMW 540i, ran it around for a bit – he actually took it down the track at Santa Pod and ran a 13.4 – and then drove it into my workshop where we stripped it,” Ron explains. The direction the project was to take from there came about after a lengthy conversation between the two, no doubt involving copious amount of tea, biscuits

Smooth operator

“It’s nothing like a traditional hot rod to drive,” says Ron enthusiastically. “It’s really, really smooth. It’s actually quite comfortable and fairly quiet inside, not what you’d expect of a hot rod at all. That’s because it’s pretty much all BMW underneath. But it’s still a V8 so it’s got a nice rumble to it, and it’s fairly economical, too.”

Though it might look like it, this car hasn’t been built to carve corners, rather just to do something different. The lack of a traditionally mounted radiator means you can see the engine through the repro ’32 grille shell

and maybe something a little stronger. Ralph then set about locating some of the other bits needed to bring it all together. The Model A-style box section chassis is of unknown origin, possibly an old Rodline product, and the repro ’31 Ford body is thought to be from the same source. “Back before they went bust,” as Ron puts is. Ron sums up its condition: “Shocking, it really was, a proper Friday afternoon job.” Which led him to consider ways to improve the situation.

Plastic fantastic

“At the end of the day, it’s a plastic car and if it falls over, or someone hits it, there’s no protection at all. So we decided to build it like a drag car, only one that you can’t see all the steel that’s in it,” Ron continues. The front two thirds of the main rectangular box section rails were therefore kept, but strengthened with a combination of tubular CDS and box section crossmembers to mount the gearbox and body. The rear crossmember it came with was dispensed

with entirely and replaced with the BMW’s pressed steel rear beam, with its factory suspension pick-ups and diff cradle. A double bulkhead hoop was then fashioned that follows the contours of the Model A cowl and a four point cage structure built up that similarly traces the internal shape of the body. Additional, smaller diameter tubes go around the rear quarter windows, while legs off the main hoop follow the line of the quarter panels down to a rear cross brace.

“It’s nothing like a traditional hot rod to drive. It’s really, really smooth… quite comfortable and fairly quiet inside” The pearl painted Model A coupe body is thought to be an old Rodline product. Note how the doors mount flush and the lack of drip rail above them. Model A-style tail lights are recessed into the rear panel and all openings operate by solenoid poppers off the key fob

Far left: In the big old autobahn cruiser it was designed for, the all-alloy 3982cc (243ci) BMW V8 produced 282bhp at 5800rpm and 295lbf.ft of torque, giving a 155mph top speed and 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds (or 13.4 second quarters in our kind of money). It’s remains stock internally, just with a bit of hydro-dipped exterior detailing and a Megasquirt standalone ECU. For now… Left: There’s not much space for luggage in the boot any more, as that’s where the radiator and fuel tank live. Early testing showed up some air lock issues with the long runs of coolant pipes, but a change of sensor and an electronic booster pump sorted that. That BMW M Power logo, incidentally, was bead rolled by Ron into the rad surround

Essentially, the reproduction body now slots down over the top of all this, with the tubular framework almost entirely hidden from sight by the interior trim. “That was the whole idea,” says Ron. “We didn’t want the framework on show, so it’s as tight to the body as I could get it. There isn’t a lot of room in these cars, but Sean and his brother can both fit in it, and his brother is six foot six or something!” Into the gap that would normally be the boot space of a Model A was slotted the BMW’s complete rear subframe and axle assembly. It came with coilovers and disc brakes as standard, though these have since been replaced by Gaz adjustable units and some aftermarket grooved discs.

Make it pretty

Up front, Ron designed his own double wishbone, inboard cantilever suspension and, once he’d mocked it all up in steel, gave those bits to a friend of his who is a toolmaker by trade to “make it pretty out of billet.” With another pair of adjustable Gaz coilovers mounted behind the grille shell,

and rack and pinion steering pirated from an Escort, it complements the rear suspension a treat and all works together to explain the car’s unexpected ride quality. “I just like pushing boundaries, doing something different,” explains Ron with a grin. “As long as it’s got eight cylinders, I’m happy.” The all-alloy, 4.0-litre BMW V8 remains unchanged from factory spec (for now…), but where the car it came out of was a comfortable, old man’s automatic, Ron felt three pedals would be more befitting its reincarnation in a hot rod. To that end, he sourced a five-speed manual box out of a 528 SE – an early one before they all became too complicated. Surprisingly, a ready market exists for just this sort of swap, so a call to PMC Motorsport in Poland and an adapter kit to mate the two was in the post. The only other significant changes to the BMW running gear are the exhaust, which is a combination of Limefire-style headers and a full under-car system made by Ron, and the ECU, now a standalone unit sourced from Megasquirt here in the UK.

“I just like pushing boundaries, doing something different. As long as it’s got eight cylinders, I’m happy”

Blower job

Part of the reason for the choice of the latter was what Sean and Ron planned for the car from the start, and that’s the addition of a supercharger. That’s why the grille shell is mounted where it is, to leave space for the blower snout and pulley drive of an Eaton M112 unit, as used on high-spec Jaguar models. Again, believe it or not, there’s a readily available kit on the market to do just this, though this time it comes from the US.

“It’ll look fairly similar to how it does now when it’s done,” says Ron, “except the throttle body will be at the back and there will be an extra pulley on the front. “All we’ll have to do is up the fuelling on the ECU and away we go, with upwards of 400 horsepower to play with.” Given that the car has been in the works, on and off, for almost 10 years now, Sean has sensibly decided not to tear it apart just as he’s about to start enjoying it, so the

You can really see the blue pearl over the white base in the dash in this shot. Also, if you look closely, you can just make out the OBP floormounted pedal box nestling in the driver’s footwell. A GPS speedo takes centre stage in the dash, flanked by temperature and fuel gauges in a recessed, engine-turned pod

pair are on the lookout for another identical 540 engine that they can strip and rebuild as a blown motor. Then, once it’s all up and running, they’ll simply pull the existing one out and drop the new one in the hole. Easy when you say it quickly. “Like everything, it’s become a money pit,” says Sean in conclusion, “but it’s just something I’ve always wanted, and it’s mad. I’ve never seen a hot rod quite like this one before.

You really have to look hard to see the rollcage in this car, and that’s the idea. It’s all hidden behind the interior panels, which Ron made himself using diamond stitch material bought off the roll. The only assistance in the trim department was from Christine Kettle, who made the covers for the Kirkey aluminium seats

Channelled body and stretched wheelbase give the car somewhat cartoonish proportions, and the engine is sure to have some people scratching their heads

“I let Ron guide me, and I’m really happy with everything he’s done and how it’s turned out. It feels tight, quick and surprisingly comfortable. I’m just looking forward to taking it out now.” Does he have any intention of seeing how quick it is on the quarter mile? “Nah. It’s just a cruiser. I’ve got an old Kawasaki ZX-6R and I don’t need anything faster than that. Besides, it’s cost a few quid and I don’t want to go throwing it down the track now.” Like Ron said earlier, this car is definitely not what you expect of a hot rod. It’s the culmination of two different people’s ideas of what a hot rod could be, not what you think one should be, and for that fact alone it should be applauded. CC

Hanging off the Ron-made A-arms are twoinch dropped spindles designed for a mid-60’s Chevy and slotted and grooved discs. No servo or any fancy driver aids, but Ron reports the lightweight car stops on a dime

The reason for the gap between the engine and grille shell up front is twofold: first, so that the rad could be moved up front if the rear mount idea didn’t work. Second, because there’s a blower in the pipeline and space is needed for the snout and front pulley

Life begins at the hop

Long term hot rodder Bob Booth got to thinking that a breakfast-type run out and meet up was lacking in his locale. And so he decided to do something about it. He made contact with a potential venue and, finding them to be very accommodating, he set a date for the inaugural Breakfast Hop. It took place at Coppice Wood Farm in Trafford Park, Urmston, Manchester on the first Sunday in October. Despite horrendous weather, 15 hardy and hungry hot rodders turned up, confirming Bob’s inclination that there was a need for such a gathering. There was only one thing for it – do it all again a month later. The November meeting was graced with better weather and, with Bob having set up a Breakfast Hop Facebook page to help spread the word, it proved a great success with folk travelling from further afield to attend. The new year brought more of the same, with an added bonus from Coppice Wood Farm for those attending the January Hop in the form of a free coffee refill for anyone leaving a Google review. On the back of the meet ups so far, Bob is currently in the process of planning

Summer times

■ Words: Dave Biggadyke ■ Pics: Julian Hunt As we start to look forward to what will hopefully be a glorious summer of 2024, let’s conclude our monthly coverage of last year’s season at Santa Pod by casting our minds back at the STP Summer National, which brought more rounds of the National Drag Racing Championships to the hallowed strip. Pro Mod, Outlaw Anglia, Street Eliminator and many more classes were doing battle, with

a full supporting programme away from the track. Saturday was cloudy but dry and the action was pretty much non-stop. Numerous PBs were run and new records were set. Darren Law made the last pass of the day, a poignant moment as his Wicked Lady dragster was carrying the ashes of the late Santa Pod Marshall Dave Rowlands. A similar moment came on Sunday, when a minute’s silence was held in memory of the

late photojournalist Steve Moxley. Sunday also saw a couple of exhibition passes from Martin Hill in the Fireforce 2 Jet Funny Car, a 6.1106 / 213.87 and a 5.9838 / 238.50. A match race pairing of Keith Bartlett in the Roarin’ Rat ’57 Chevy and Gary Carr in the Boyling Point Chevy Nova ended in a tie with one win each. It was a great weekend of racing that will be best remembered for one man… a man from Oz in the World’s fastest Anglia.

Ron Bartlett ran one PB, 7.9212 / 171.71, in the first qualifying round – then another, 7.9165 / 171.03, in the next. Meanwhile Paul Stephen, who had brought his Double Trouble Altered over from Australia, ran 7.2278 / 190.48 on a 6.79 dial in. Billy Gane also ran a PB, 7.6752 / 175.72, but it was Nick Good (6.84 dial in) who headed up the ladder with a 6.8425 / 191.25. Scott Hauser (7.37 dial in) took second spot with a 7.3755 / 179.82 and Joe Kellett (8.90 dial in) was third on 8.9077 / 173.68. Bartlett then ran a PB 7.8923 / 171.70 but pulled a red, Kellett and Hauser broke out and Good went through on a bye. In round 2, Good lost out to Alan Didwell by a 0.0072 win margin, with wins also going to AC Bell, David Russell and Pete Walters,

Outlaw Anglia The Outlaw Anglia teams are renowned for putting on a great show, but this must have been one of the best yet. First up, John Willard piloted Aussie Outlaw to a stonking 6.7991 / 204.31, halfway to new OA speed record. Next time out, Willard was paired against Colin Millar. The Scotsman pulled a red – but that paled into insignificance when the timing boards lit up. Willard 6.7627 / 204.24 and Millar 6.9869 / 195.47 – side-by-side sixes and the quickest-ever OA pairing. Oh, and new OA records as well. Outstanding. Those records were only to last a matter of weeks, however, as Willard went on

Westpoint Arena in Exeter once again became the mecca for all gearheads as Jay and his crew at put on their annual event – which shaped up early to be the best yet and certainly did not disappoint. With 75 clubs registered and a total of 1700 cars on display, including more than 50 inside, what more could you want? It’s not just a hod rod show, of course, which might limit its appeal for some CC readers, but amid the drift demos, extreme bike battles and, a new personal favourite, lawnmower racing, there was no shortage of our kind of cars I caught up with Jay afterwards and he told me: ‘This was our best FuelFest to date, with record numbers through the gates and one of the best selections we’ve had inside. I couldn’t do it without the help

and support of my team, and everyone that comes to the show. It wouldn’t be possible without them.’ This year is the show’s 10th anniversary – and already plans are afoot to make it a special one. But don’t take my word for it; find BHP FuelFest on Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with spoilers and info. The date has been set for Sunday 9th June 2024.

Livin’ the Dream I

t’s not for everybody. The grass is not always greener and I know lots of people who have moved to California only to give it up and go back to Blighty. Yes, it’s sunny (most of the time) and yes, the car scene is intense and constant. But you’re expected to work. The hours are long, the holidays are short and the cost of living is quite expensive. That said, if you find a niche and carve a spot for yourself, you can enjoy a nice life in the sunshine, doing what you love. Take, for example, Jay Dean of Nostalgia Ranch, Bonsall, near Fallbrook, California. Jay grew up in Essex, where he completed a traditional automotive apprenticeship in the family’s chain of dealerships. At age 14 he bought a Morris Minor and spent the next three years working on it until he was able to drive it on ‘L’ plates. ‘Richard King punched the louvres and through him I really got into the eighties Southend scene,’ says Jay. ‘“El Ritchie,” Rick Pearmain, Rob Nixon and Nick Taylor were

all huge influences on me and when they started going to US I thought, “I can do that.” ‘I was 19 when I moved to California. That was in 1988. That same year, my brother Simon Emery opened The Paintbox in Coggeshall, Essex. ‘California was everything I hoped for and more. I began racing my daily driver, a ’55 oval with a 232ci engine. In street trim it ran a best of 11.08 but when I turned it into a full-on race car it dipped into the 10s. I built my first tube chassis at age 23 and ran an AA/Altered Fiat Topolino at the local Carlsbad Raceway. It was paradise.’

Infamous Daytonas

Jay’s enthusiasm for all things automotive led him to Tom McBurnie, who most infamously produced the Corvette C3-based Ferrari Daytona Spyders used in the TV Show Miami Vice. ‘Working for Tom was a great learning experience,’ comments Jay. While McBurnie’s Spyders might not have been the real thing, Jay’s next job

was working on real Ferraris for Cavallo Motorsports in Oceanside, where he eventually became the race manager. ‘I got to meet so many people such as Phil Remington, and crew chief on some really exciting cars including the ex-Parnelli Jones King Cobra and a Holman and Moody ’71 Ferrari Daytona. ‘I restored original Cobras, including the engine for the #11 Cobra before it was auctioned. Those eight years at Cavallo gave me invaluable, multi-tasking experience.’ In 2004, Cavallo was sold and, as so often happens, it just wasn’t the same under new ownership. For Jay, the time was right to open Nostalgia Ranch, building and racing traditional-style hot rods. ‘Clive Griesel and the Low Flyers were another big influence,’ says Jay. We’ve bumped into Jay at any number of the So-Cal nostalgia drags races, from the RPM Nationals to the Race of Gentlemen (TROG). Here, he can usually be found behind the wheel of the Hop Up T, so-called

because of his long relationship with Hop Up magazine. The T debuted at the ill-fated Pismo Beach TROG event in 2016. The event might have been rained out but despite a short, 86-inch wheelbase and a 21-stud flathead, albeit with 16 plugs, the T showed promise. Beginning in 2017, Jay raced the T at the first three RPM Nationals events at Rancho Santa Margarita, California. Then 2020 happened. ‘There really weren’t any events, so I took the time to remake the T. I built a new, longer 103-inch frame using 2x3 box section and installed the ’23 body that I literally pulled from a Los Angeles dumpster. And this time it got its turtle deck. ‘The 16-plug, 21-stud went into my wife Beverly’s Deuce Roadster and I built a new, big-bore engine based on a ’41 block with Offenhauser heads, a Sharp intake and three Stromberg 97s. With a Scat crank, Scat rods and Ross pistons it has a 10:1 CR and puts out well over 200hp on Bob McKray’s dyno. The cam is Potvin while the

Mesa, won at Pomona in ’55 and won at Riverside in ’58. ‘It was rough, and it was a lot of work to resurrect it. However it was 90% complete. The block was missing but the heads, tach, seat, wheel and everything else was there. I

even scratched down the paint and what you see is exactly how it was painted back in the day – I matched it as closely as I could.’ Under the hood is a 265ci Merc with early Edelbrock heads, a medium-rise Thickstun intake and a pair of Stromberg 97s. Behind

Busman’s holiday

Most of these events are work for Jay, as he also helps his customers. For example, Katrin and Stefan Immke fly in from Cologne, Germany, to race their cars that Jay prepares. Stefan’s ‘Rum Runner’ ol’ school rail job was rebuilt and painted by Jay and is powered by a Bob McKray-built 286ci 59A flathead fitted with some rare (as in only six modern sets have been made) extrathick Offenhauser heads and an even rarer Hilborn-Travers cast-aluminium, mechanical fuel injection manifold – actually number 75 of the few that were made before Travers left Hilborn to form Traco. So far, Stefan has run a best of 8.2 at 86 mph in the 1/8th. While not as fast as her husband’s dragster, Katrin’s T has history. ‘It’s an old barn find, forties race car,’ says Jay. ‘We traced its history and you can see from the decklid that Jack Truesdale ran 113.63 in it at El Mirage in 1949. Then as guys got into drag racing, Dick Hogan raced it at Paradise

Keeping it in the family, Jay and Beverly’s daughter Kelsey also loves the hot rod culture and usually accompanies her parents to race meets. Jay’s latest project, a flathead-powered ’27 Roadster on Model A rails, is destined to become hers

You know how it goes in the rodding world. Friends become customers, and customers become friends. Katrin and Stefan Immke regularly fly in from Germany to compete aboard the old-school rail and Model T that Jay maintains for them. This is Katrin, behind the wheel of the T, with Beverly in the background

the engine is a ’39 trans with the original banjo locker. ‘It really needs more motor,’ says Jay. ‘But Katy doesn’t get to drive it very often and, besides, it’s early Ford racecar – it’s not easy.’ So far, she’s running in the 10s. One of Jay’s most recent projects is a track-nosed ’27 Roadster for his daughter Kelsey. Built out of more found parts, it comprises an original ’27 body, Model A rails and a 24-stud 59A flathead Ford V8 with a pair of Strombergs on an original Sharp intake. Of course, it rides on Kelsey wires. ‘She enjoys the hot rod culture and usually

accompanies Bev and me to the races,’ says Jay. ‘It’s good family time!’ In the 35 years he has been in California, Jay has lived the dream. He’s worked on Ferraris, built hot rods and raced the drags. He’s part of the culture and the culture is part of him. And the dream is still happening, too – as a member of the San Diego Roadster Club, he’s now going to get the chance to race the hallowed ground at El Mirage and Bonneville. For an Essex boy who took a chance on a new life beneath the California sun, it doesn’t get much better. CC

Auto focus Drag Racing’s Loss

A

pproaching the new year, I had cause to reflect on the sad realisation that over the past year we have lost a disproportionately high number of prominent names who influenced the UK branch of the sport in their own special way. In January 2023 we lost John Bennett, who was the most recognisable person in the sport as Santa Pod first opened. A drag racing pioneer who was chairman of the BHRA, editor of Drag Racing and Hot Rod magazine, and the visible partner of Santa Pod, Bennett was seen as the powerhouse of those early years. Two respected names were lost in February. Nobby Hills and his Houndog cars were an always present sight for so many years - and the flamboyant character could not be missed, as he towered over everyone. Never a driver himself, the cars he built and ran were some of the most memorable

Nobby Hills built a string of dragsters, before moving on to the new Funny Car class. Houndog 8 was the last of them, and was based on Tony Nancy’s car design

around. Fred Whittle is particularly remembered for the legendary Shutdown altered, which he modelled on the American Pure Hell machine by working from pictures in Hot Rod. Harold Bull had the honour of receiving the first ever timing slip at Santa Pod in his tiny dragster, Stripduster. Powered by a blown Austin A30 engine, Harold showed just what could be achieved with a small budget, and less than 1000cc four pot power, as he put many V8s to shame during his time. He showed just what could be done with the smallest of engines – which would propel him to times under 10 seconds! Brian Taylor was undoubtedly an influential force in the sport. Apart from being a well known commentator, he also introduced a successful contingency sponsorship scheme and produced films and sound recordings of races. He wrote the Crazy Horses book and was the force leading

the Allard Dragster restoration. Brian was someone who never took no for an answer! David Owen passed only a day later. He was an organiser of the first practice days held at Gravely, back in 1964. He wrote the first drag racing rule book and was the early race director at Santa Pod. Another loss in this area was Amos Meekins. The retired Santa Pod Chief Scrutineer spent decades ensuring that the ever improving safety requirements kept racers safe. And safety considerations were something that Arnold ‘Arnie’ Kuhns was responsible for on a global scale. He founded the American SFI Foundation, whose safety requirements also apply to across Europe. Brian Sparrow was a true car and bike enthusiast. His photos and articles during the early days serve as a valuable historic archive. More than that, he was on the

committees of the BDRA, BHRA and NSA in the same period, and was a useful link in communicating with outside officialdom. He was a drag racing pioneer who was a supporting part of Dragster Developments in those early days. If that name does not ring a bell, then Allan ‘Bootsie’ Herridge was the leading character in the team. The losses to the racing community also encompassed the bike ranks. Chris ‘Cannon’ Hannam truly was truly a larger than life character who rode in a number of classes, including Top Fuel Bike. Latterly he was a team principal for Neil Midgely, with the fiercely quick ex-Ian King fuel bike. It was one cruel blow after another. Neil crashed the bike in Sweden and, while the team were preparing to rebuild, Chris was killed in a motorcycle accident while on a riding holiday in Spain. From an earlier time, Tom Christenson was the most successful rider over the pond in the mid 70s and made a number of visits to the UK, where he recorded the first 8-second run in Europe – and undoubtedly left his mark. Few have spent 50 years actively involved in racing the way Jerry Lackey did. He was an American serviceman stationed in Germany

Brian Taylor in full flow, as he was commentating at Santa Pod in the mid 70s while being filmed

The Don Schumacher funny car, which was imported to the UK in 1973. Don, along with Paula Murphy, inspired all who attended Santa Pod for that introduction to the funnies

– which would become his home. After working to establish the sport in his adopted country, he was also a founding member of the NitrOlympX at Hockenheim, bringing him into contact with so many of our racers who look forward to this yearly spectacular at the F1 circuit. December turned out to be a doubly sad time for those who remember Don Schumacher and Paula Murphy coming over from the US with their funny cars to light up the fans in such spectacular fashion. Unforgettable moments from 1973 – and how ironic that they should pass at virtually the same time. In that same month, another mighty name from the US scene, Roland Leong, the Hawaiian, also passed. From Sweden, Joran Persaker was another notable loss. Another long time racer, whose participation included Top Fuel and Pro Mod, he was the founder of Persakers Speed Shop and was well known to Santa Pod regulars. We lost photojournalist Steve Moxley unexpectedly in the middle of 2023. Then, as we moved into 2024, and barely a couple of months after being inducted into the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame after fifty years of covering the sport, my old colleague

Enjoying the ride. Roland Leong hangs on to the back of the golf buggy driven by Rob Loaring. Dennis Priddle offered to stand on the back – but Roland didn’t fancy the wheelies!

from Drag Racing News days Roger Gorringe sadly passed at home. Even the Brighton Speed Trials, which dates back to 1905 and is generally recognised as the oldest UK motor sport event, now appears to have passed into history. The seafront resounded to the full-bore spectacle of dragsters in the early 1970s. Dennis Priddle’s 7.69-second run in 1973 on the tricky Madeira Drive surface will stand forever as the quickest quarter mile ever recorded there – and probably the noisiest, given the noise restrictions which were eventually introduced. While in the process of completing this article, I was shocked to hear that Norm Wheeldon had suddenly departed. He was positively looking forward to this year’s nostalgia events with the Wheeldon and Charman team cars, and his loss will be felt in the pits. All of those remembered here made a real contribution to drag racing in their own way, along with others we have lost in the course of the past year. The sport has built on their endeavours and continued to move forward. I look expectantly forward to an exciting 2024 season in which to make future memories.

Just as I was selecting these pictures came news that long time Top Methanol racer Rob Turner, who enjoyed racing success on both sides of the pond, had passed

Words & Pics: David Hart Event: NSVA Truck-In Date: 11-13 August Venue: Drum and Monkey, Upton-on-Severn The National Street Van Association’s 2023 Truck-in was the big one – the event’s 50th anniversary. And it attracted an amazing mix of vans and customs for a brilliant weekend in the grounds of the Drum and Monkey in Upton-on-Severn. The fun and games started on the Friday, with a karaoke session on the go as the first show-goers started to roll in. Saturday then saw a cruise to the Morgan factory, followed in the afternoon by more fun and silly games. Then in the evening it was time for a 70s’ disco and light show. Sunday was all about the show and shine, prize giving and raffles.

Over the course of the weekend, many vanners old and new exchanged stories from back in the day. Some were members from the beginning and still are. The NSVA welcomes all vans, whether it be a 60s’ Dodge, a 90s’ Day Van or a

modern-day Transit. For more information about the club, check out the NSVA Facebook page or visit its website at: nsva.co.uk.
