COVER STORY
By Pria Raiyani and Swapna Peri S. Hussain Zaidi

Hussain Zaidi, India's No. 1 crime writer, delves into the fascinating journey behind his latest novel, "The Black Orphan " Known for his gripping narratives and meticulous attention to detail, Zaidi shares the genesis of the book, which originated from a casual conversation with friends and quickly evolved into a compelling story he couldn't abandon

In an exclusive interview with Storizen Magazine, he explains the title's natural emergence and credits the evocative cover to the expertise of his publishers Blending romance, intrigue, and action, Zaidi aims to captivate readers by weaving a multifaceted tale centered around DIG Ajay Rajvardhan and lawyer Asiya Khan, who navigate a labyrinth of terrorism charges and a serial killer on the loose. In discussing his creative process, Zaidi emphasizes the importance of engaging storytelling and maintaining narrative momentum, all while grounding his fiction in the rich, real-life landscape of Mumbai. This interview offers a deep dive into Zaidi's creative mind, revealing the intricate layers that make "The Black Orphan" a must-read

Could you take us through the genesis of "The Black Orphan," including the idea behind the title, the cover, and the plot?

The plot was born out of a conversation with two very close friends It began as a very vague idea but I wasn’t able to leave it alone Soon, I had the skeleton of a plot in my head, which I bounced off the two friends They loved it, and after that, you couldn’t have stopped me if you had tried

The title suggested itself somewhere down the line. I always prefer to have multiple options for a title but there is always that one title that jumps out. Black Orphan was that one title. As for the cover, I did what I always do; I left it in the hands of better minds than mine. The publishers did full justice to it, just as I knew it would

"The Black Orphan," is an interesting combination of romance, intrigue, and action, resulting in a multidimensional story that captivates readers. How did you weave romance, intrigue, and action into "The Black Orphan" to create a compelling story?

I think the more dimensions a story has, the more captivating or compelling it turns out to be Whether or not The Black Orphan captivates its readers is something that time will tell, but my attempt has been to do justice to the characters and the world I have created This means approaching the telling of the story from every angle, and not leave the reader wondering It’s simple logic, really The genre demands action, intrigue is its lifeblood and what is life without romance?

The protagonist, DIG Ajay Rajvardhan, and his love interest, lawyer Asiya Khan, face a complex web of challenges, including terrorism charges and a serial killer on the loose. What motivated you to create characters with such intricate backgrounds, and how did you develop their dynamics throughout the story?

Like most of my fiction, The Black Orphan is based on a whole lot of real-life incidents The backgrounds of the characters, their background and their dynamics are a result of this Real life cops, real life lawyers, their dynamics, the real-world results of those dymanic all of these come together to form the story of The Black Orphan

Your novels, including "The Black Orphan," are acclaimed for their fast-paced and engrossing nature Could you provide some insights into your writing process? How do you manage to sustain momentum and keep readers engaged from start to finish?

I think it comes from a place of responsibility. I may be the one buildin the story but I also have a responsibility towards my readers to keep it engaging and not drop the ball. A reader can lose interest in the best of stories if the telling of the story is not engaging enough I am experienced enough to know my reader and what they want, and if they are being kind enough to buy my books, I need to respect them enough to keep their attention engaged And it is

A fearless cop, a passionate human rights lawyer, and a deadly terror plot collide when DIG Ajay Rajvardhan of the National Investigation Agency meets the captivating lawyer Asiya Khan in court. She's defending a woman accused of terrorism, putting them on opposite sides. Despite this, Ajay can't stop thinking about her. As they grow closer, they become entangled in a web of crime and intrigue, with a serial killer targeting nuclear scientists and a sinister plot brewing in Mumbai. Ajay and his team race against time to stop the mastermind. Inspired by true events, this gripping tale of love, terror, and vengeance showcases Hussain Zaidi at his finest.

perfectly possible to do so without sacrificing the essence of the story itself It’s a balance every writer can strike

Personally, I achieve this by steering clear of overexplaining or editorializing and letting the story tell the facts.

Why Mumbai? Was it driven by an untold narrative, a particular sentiment, or perhaps just an instinct?

When I first imagined Ajay and Asiya, I imagined them in Mumbai. It seemed unfair to take them out of the world that they were conceived in at a later stage, just for the sake of variety I don’t think readers will ever tire of reading stories set in Mumbai It is that kind of a city, every nook, every corner holds its own stories And to be fair, there are a lot of other locations that the story spans across as well

Some writers and movie directors have faced criticism for depicting protagonists from Islam and Hindu religions, with accusations of promoting "love jihad." In your story, the characters are safe Do you believe any art form should be exempt from these controversies?

I believe controversy for the sake of it is counterproductive and unfaithful to the art of writing. If my book were about the concept of love jihad - if such a thing even exists outside of WhatsApp forwards - my treatment would have been different. The characters, the storyline, everything would have been different. But just because I have protagonists from two different communities involved romantically doesn’t mean I jump aboard the bandwagon and use an ongoing controversy to sell a few more copies That is the moral responsibility that every writer must stick to

There is a general notion among writers/authors that writing non-fiction is harder because you have to stick to the facts, while fiction allows more freedom for creative storytelling. You have excelled in both genres. Can you explain how these differences affect the way you write and create?

I’d put it like this; in non-fiction, you let the facts tell the story, and in fiction you let the story tell the facts Even the completely fantastical genre of fiction ends up informing the reader about something or the other Harry Potter as a concept was fully made up, but it did talk about the problem of discrimination that the West has seen, and continues to see But it did not preach, it just told the story and let the story tell the facts. If J K Rowling were to write a non-fiction book tomorrow about racial discrimination, I’m willing to bet there wouldn’t be a single magic wand in it.

While writing non-fiction books, do you ever encounter moments where you grapple with the decision of how much information to reveal versus how much to keep hidden?

I think the purpose of a non-fiction book would be defeated if I chose to hide information But what I do make sure of is that all the information I include is substantiated, either in the form of citations or my own experiences The biggest risk for a fiction writer is to not fall prey to the lure of sensationalising without substantiation If you are factually on firm ground, you’re golden

If you had the chance to meet the characters from your books, which characters would you choose to meet, and what conversation would you like to have with them?

I wish I could say that I would advise them to make certain choices or decisions differently. But firstly, most of them are too headstrong to listen to me and secondly, if they did anything differently, The Black Orphan wouldn’t be what it is today, as a story.

Would you share something about yourself that your readers don’t know (yet)?

Just like Ajay Rajvardhan, I am a person who lets the heart think more than the head And this has cost me in life But just like it does with Ajay, this has also taught me who my friends actually are, and those that I have come to trust as real, genuine friends, I would today trust with my life

KEY Adaptation Is the

ohit woke up a little earlier than usual. Unsure of the results of the examination that he had been put through, he roamed listlessly in his rented apartment, while a gale of uncertainty gusted noisily inside his head.

It was one of those hot, unbearable summer months Whenever he visited the city of Bangalore as a child along with his parents, almost twenty years ago, he always found itmild, pleasant Crossing the threshold of urbanization with negligible green cover, jungle of concrete, and erratic, searing weather conditions, the oncea-paradise image of the city had shifted toward analmost-inhabitable, challenging persona, stirring the necessity of climatic resilience

Rohit’s mind drifted back to the assessment that was about to happen a few hours later His fate depended not only on the outcome but also on the satisfaction level of his examiner, Venu

“Don’t worry You’ll come off with flying colors ”

These encouraging words from his girlfriend, Malini, consoled his every anxiety

The first time he was introduced to Venu, Malini’s father, was a few months ago Venu worked as a Head Chef in a posh restaurant When Rohit asked for his daughter’s hand, Venu insisted on starting a restaurant together. But accepting him as a son-in-law wasn’t easy for him.

“I wish my daughter the very best, and I’ll not settle for anybody other than the best to be my son-in-law.” Venu’s words reverberated in the alleyways of Rohit’s mind, almost crushing down his clattering confidence.

Being a chartered accountant by profession, he wasn’t well-versed in the intricacies of the culinary world But that part wasn’t for him to worry about, as Venu promised to be around whenever he needed his advice and assistance about the gastronomic activities

“Every business that we’re venturing into should consider the adaptations needed to mitigate climate change This restaurant business is no different Fixing air conditioners blasting hot air and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming is a big ‘NO’ for me Storing water and food in the fridges to keep them cool can be avoided They also contribute to the temperature rise ” Venu had expressed his

concern. “Only if you can find a solution to these problems, we can have a happy ending to your love story.” He had continued solemnly.

Dressed up in the best attire brown, cotton trousers and a white shirt Rohit proceeded toward the restaurant On reaching, he found Venu and Malini waiting outside in the scorching heat

“Welcome to the soft launch of our restaurant Rupantara, the transformation! We all need to acclimate to the vagaries of climate change Isn’t It?” Rohit said radiantly and manfully while opening the door for them

Inside the restaurant, Venu felt comfortable and cool The walls were tastefully decorated with paintings from famous artists of the country Venu scrutinized the ceiling looking for air conditioning ducts but couldn’t locate any Rohit led him to the roof above the restaurant to answer his query On the roof, Venu found the entire area covered with green grass and shrubs

“Green roofing is the only way out to keep our rooms cool naturally,” Rohit said, while the shades of jade reflected in his eyes

Venu smiled The restaurant had an unconstrained air about it, with ideas, design, and preliminary activities in plentitude

“We’ve put water-soaked khus or vetiver curtains on the windows The dry air cools as it passes through the wet khus The use of this native Indian grass as a coolant in households has been abandoned by us long back. Instead, the air conditioners have been installed in the urban houses. But this ancient method is effective and environment-friendly.” Rohit added.

In the kitchen, Venu found several earthen pitchers storing drinking water.

“The best way to drink cool water is from these earthen pots. Apart from that, it boosts metabolism, averts sunstroke and is gentle on the throat The clay pots are natural purifiers and the water kept in them is generally healthy for consumption ” Rohit explained

By nature, men had never relinquished their cosmic associations with the great cycles of nature that remained inherent in them ever-growing, ever-flourishing Rohit was no exception, and his ardent desire to make a difference amid climate change was praiseworthy

Unexpectedly, there was a knock on the front door Who could be there? Rohit wondered

As he opened the door, a middle-aged, fashionable lady stood outside, smiling at him

“I don’t believe this Vinayana ma’am, the famous food critic is at my door But the restaurant is not ready for the world ” Rohit exclaimed while mutinous fluxes of disquiet invaded his calm on seeing the sudden visitor

“I asked her to join us for lunch ” Venu chipped in

As they all settled down at a table for four, the food started coming in

“We’ll discuss your restaurant and its food as we dig in I must convey the pluses and minuses of the food that would be served here to those potential customers ”

Vinayana said, toying with her mobile phone

Rohit felt a stream of uneasiness trickle down his forehead It was as if he was facing a test where Venu was the internal assessor and Vinayana the external appraiser. No matter how much a student prepared, he was bound to have his alertness and valor exhausted in the presence of such strict examiners. A negative comment from the food critic could tarnish the reputation of the restaurant even before it opened.

“We’ve all newly trained, young chefs in our restaurant cooking vegetarian dishes,” Rohit said hesitantly while the jeera (cumin) rice was brought in, as his soul was shaded with abject terror

This was followed by stir-fried locally available vegetables like pumpkin, yam, raw banana, drumsticks; piping hot sambhar (lentil soup); mango pickle; potato, onion, and brinjal fritters; tomato–coconut chutney; fried papadams; and curd

They began with a conversation about the popular restaurants in the area, but after a while all fell silent, and their faces grew brighter by the appearance of each dish Comfort food enlivened the mood and soothed the soul, and that was exactly what they found on the restaurant’s very first, simple yet mouth-watering, menu While chewing on the candied fennel, Vinayana brought up the topic, as she leafed through Rohit’s face vacantly, “Everything is good, but how’ll you continue without a refrigerator in the kitchen? What will happen to the leftovers?”

“We’ve decided to cook fresh produce that will reach our kitchen on a daily basis At the end of the day, the surplus food will not be thrown away Please come along with us to know more about it ” Rohit insisted

The food was packed in earthen pots and kept in Rohit’s car. All four of them got on and headed toward the nearby flyover.

On reaching there, a group of children in shabby attire

welcomed them with jubilant cheers and smiles Their parents joined them soon They lived in the makeshift houses beneath the flyover

With the help of Malini, Rohit cleaned a portion of the area, placed around twenty banana leaves and filled small earthen tumblers with water All the women, men, and their children sat down to eat, while Rohit and Malini served them rice, mixed vegetables along with sambhar and curd in earthen vessels In her eyes, Rohit’s concern for the underprivileged made him a figure of considerable pathos and heroism

At the end of the meal, the inhabitants of the flyover expressed their deep satisfaction before saying goodbyes Venu and Vinayana left without any word

The next morning when Rohit read the newspaper, he found Vinayana’s article on the front page that appeared beneath the headline, “Learn the Ways to AlleviateClimate Change from Rupantara.”

As he read through the article, he felt his eyes brimming with tears. Just then the mobile phone chimed. It was Venu’s call.

“You’ve not only done an exceptional job at the restaurant but also paved the way for a bright future for those around you But don’t you think we should collaborate in your earnest endeavors? Let’s do it together ” Venu’s words initiated a flower of pride to blossom within him

“Yes, papa!” Rohit could muster only these words, as he felt his voice choked with emotions Outdoors the blazing sun witnessing man’s illimitable transformation had commenced strewing fireballs all around Deep within, he knew that he wasn’t afraid of them anymore.

ameer and his son Samar witnessed the sunset on the porch of their house. He was sharing stories of his childhood. His enthralling tales captivated sevenyear-old Samar's attention. But he was finding it hard to believe. "Dad, you're such a bluffer," Samar laughed, his innocent eyes sparkling with amusement. "All these things exist only in my comic stories "

No, Son, believe me, I'm not, said Sameer earnestly His heart sank, realizing his son had difficulty accepting his childhood experiences He says, " As a child, I spent endless nights on my ancestral house terrace, sleeping and gazing at the sky of silvery stars After school, our daily ritual was climbing the grooves of green trees, playing for hours in the cool breeze, and swimming in Before he could tell more, he was interrupted by little Samar

"Hey, Dad, we can't even sit outdoors for a few minutes here, and you're talking about endless nights on the terrace His innocent eyes filled in disbelief as he continuously scratched his arms, full of mosquito bites His little fingers then pointed up in the sky, and he skeptically commented

"And, where are those galaxies of shining stars? What I see are only a few faintly twinkling stars" Sameer took a long, sad pause He found himself struggling with the words to convince his child that his tales of childhood were not fiction stories He mutters, "I don't blame you, my son In today's world, very few traces of it are left in urban clusters." He sighed and then wished he could turn back the hands of time to show his son the beauty of Nature he had experienced as a child.

While he was engrossed in his thoughts, his wife, Neena, joined them and asked Samar to go inside the house. She warns, "Samar, these dusty, polluted winds can aggravate your asthma attack." Samar obediently gets up, but while going inside, his innocent eyes seem to ask Sameer, " Where is that pristine air that you enjoyed as a child?"

of trees once thrived. The muddy lanes have transformed into concrete roads. Progressive urbanization has faded away the memories of Sameer's childhood.

Disillusioned, Sameer, while having breakfast the next day, expresses his disappointment to his father. He says, "Dad, you're the Sarpanch of this Village How could you allow them to uproot those age-old trees?

Sameer's father then explained that the Warehouses were much needed as they provided good storage facilities for farmers He says, "After these Warehouses, it became very convenient for our villagers to transport crops to retail markets at an appropriate time "

Sameer grumbled loudly and said, "But all this was at the expense of bringing down well-grown trees " "And, what happened to the park? There, I saw a Government outlet opened to provide subsidized groceries Further, on the way, I saw an extensive packaging factory mushrooming over the green fields"

He kept complaining further "This is becoming a common scenario everywhere in the name of progress I don't know what our governments are doing There is no planning and apathy towards the environment No wonder the climate around us is witnessing disturbing changes"

Sameer's Dad looked at him deeply and said, "Come, Son, let's go around the Village Maybe you'll be able to find answers to your questions "

The little Samar jumped from his chair and shouted, "I'm coming too."

The Old man took him in his arms and said," Yes, of course."

Samar's questions kept echoing in Sameer's mind for a long time He then considered visiting his ancestral hometown, which he had not visited for over a decade He hoped to show the traces of his childhood to his son But as they arrived at the Village, Sameer was taken aback

The once quiet and serene lanes were now bustling with activities Tall Warehouses stood where grooves

As they roamed in the village lanes, Sameer noticed once tiny houses had transformed into bigger homes. Almost every house showed signs of prosperity. The uneven lanes had given way to cemented roads with street lights The school building was renovated Its facilities had massively improved compared to his childhood They stopped for a while at a newly opened hospital Sameer remembered how they had to rush to a nearby city for medical assistance

A broad smile breaks on his face as he speaks, "Hmmm it was so good to see the Village flourishing but He paused as the memories of the old town flashed in his mind again

Sameer's father seems to be reading his mind He said, " Son, my village people and I know that any

development comes with a price tag paid by natural resources around us So, we are continuously trying to preserve it in new ways"

Sameer raised his eyebrows in a question and asked," Preserve how?

Look closely at the houses around you, says the Old Sarpanch Each home has solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and a small open traditional veranda surrounded by lush green plantations and trees After every block, there are play areas for the children

Though smaller than earlier, they are immaculately maintained All this was possible with the collaborative effort between the government and the community

Sameer also noticed that people were carrying reusable bags in the market, and plastic was merely used for inevitable purposes However, he still needed to be convinced why trees were uprooted in order to construct the warehouses and factories.

His father replies ."Yes, we uprooted trees for progress and allowed a factory to come near our Village. But you should have seen the thriving forest we villagers created behind that Warehouse. The roads have come, but hundreds of trees have been planted at its sides. For every uprooted tree, we ensured that Ten new trees were planted" "This is a continuous drive that my community has committed to maintaining the balance between progress and Nature "

Hmm but why the factories? Asked Sameer

The old Sarpanch replies wisely," To provide good employment opportunities to our youth So that they are not forced to migrate to cities Many villages near our vicinity are left desolate, with no young generation Sameer was amazed to witness his father's and his community's dedication to maintaining the Village's socio-economic and ecological balance He then wonders if one day, with all such facilities in the town, he would also like to shift to his hometown, leaving the hustle of big cities

Engrossed in deep thoughts, he drives down to the lush green forest behind the warehouses, double the size of the earlier one

"Oh, Dad, this is almost the same as what you told me in your childhood stories " Shouted little Samar with delight as he ran around the trees

The old Sarpanch smiles, seeing the happiness on his grandchild's face Then, taking a deep breath, he says to Sameer. "You're right, my son. Many things you enjoyed as a child are no longer the same. But it doesn't mean that we should give up hope. "Nature may look

different now, but it's still there, waiting for us to appreciate it in new ways "

He looks deeply into Sameer's eyes and says, "Son, create new imprints from the fading reminiscences for your son By doing this, you may be able to recreate a magic that you feel it has lost "

These words left a deep imprint in Sameer's heart, and he returned home with a valuable perspective

XXX

One fine day, Sameer tells Samar," Son, let's create magic for you," he said, standing next to a community lake next to its apartment "This dying lake is the victim of our ignorance "

Sameer, with the help of a few friends, began the work of restoring the community lake. They started the awareness drive, and, with time, many more like-minded hands joined as they were waiting for someone to take the first step.

With the support of the community and local authorities, they organized regular clean-up drives, planted native trees and medicinal plants around the lake, and implemented measures to prevent water pollution and restore marine life, which helped control the mosquito menace

In a few years, the once-ailing lake transformed into a thriving ecosystem

While Sameer couldn't bring back the exact world he had experienced as a child, he was succeeding in instilling a deep appreciation for Nature in Samar

The community understood that change is inevitable, but our actions as individuals can make a difference. By continuously working towards preserving the environment, they could make a difference and help recreate the new magic out of the lost ones.

Watching a beautiful sunset, Sameer and Samar now sit on the banks of the lake, surrounded by the vibrant colors of blooming flowers and the cheerful songs of birds They share stories of their adventures, the challenges, and the joy they had found along the way Sameer had embraced the beauty that remained, cherishing his childhood memories while creating new imprints for his son- the future generation

His father would peer into the cloth with great concentration, before his nimble fingers pierced the cloth, using the needle with surgical precision. Dinesh often wondered whether his father’s hunch was due to a bad back or a declining eyesight that forced him to bend and peer into the cloth The output was an exquisite embroidery, with colorful designs, and small mirrors, stuck at regular intervals, used as bed sheets, pillow cases, and handbags He was curious as to why his father made them, when they did not own pillows, a bed, or even handbag

The bag used to buy groceries from the village shop, was a crudely stitched bag from old and torn pieces of cloth

Dinesh was small, underweight and resembled a 7year-old, with a large head and dark-green curious eyes They were members of the Rabari Community, that inhabited a sleepy village in the harsh and barren desert of Kutch, Gujarat Everyone in the village bore weather-beaten faces, etched with deep strong lines and folds of dark brown skin, which strangely lent character to their faces Most men sported a large handle-bar moustache, which was a fashion amongst the men and a sign of virility

Primarily a nomadic community, Dinesh’s father did embroidery to supplement the meagre family income His mother did the basic household tasks of collecting wood, cooking the meals, and drawing water from the well, which would become almost dry by summer.

Dinesh’s father would encourage him to learn embroidery, in the hope that Dinesh could add to the family income. However, Dinesh’smind meandered aimlessly to other areas, often leading to questions that his father could not answer. His questions such as “Father, why are huts shaped round? Why does it get windier in December and January? How much money do we need to buy a motor-bike?” were met with a stony silence His father’s face grimaced every time he asked, mostly because he was unable to answer any question However, what made his father feel better, was that the village School Master, a highly educated man, didn’t know the answerseither The monotony and boredom in the sleepy village was broken once a month by the arrival of car The boys would run after the car The adults would emerge from their huts on hearing the honk anda noisy buzz would spread like sandstorm enveloping the entire village “Saheb has come” they would all say The ladies would rush to prepare a snack or a drink The men would dust their charpoys, in a superfluous effort to remove the dirt

A plump, middle-aged man would emerge slowly from the car. He had a rounded face, with black oily hair combed back, and a crooked smile, where the sides of his mouth sloped downwards from the left to the right. A perpetual wide-eyed expression of surprise, projected pomposity rather than warmth. His clothes were washed, and well ironed offering tell-tale signs of his prosperity The villagers would rush to pay obeisance, when he visited their houses

As he approached Dinesh’s house, his parents stopped all activities and offered him the seat on the charpoy His mother offered some snacks and the last piece of gur in the house Dinesh’s father also implored him to do Namaskar! Dinesh refused! The sight of the man, generated anger and he would froth and fume, before his mother whisked him away, lest he offend the honored guest The man would then examine the embroidery prepared by his father He had the ability to find every invisible flaw in the work and no bag was worth buying He said “Chachaji, your eyes are getting weak No one will buy this bag of yours Since I know you, I can offer at best Rs 50 for this” Dinesh father would meekly reply “if you say so, sir Your thinking is always correct” Dinesh, knew enough to realise, that when his father got paid Rs 50, the same bag was being sold in the cities of Rajkot and Ahmedabad for Rs 5000 and even triple this in the far-off city of Mumbai He suffered daily nightmares - the Trader with a pompous smile, the hunger in his stomach, the same old clothes which became tatters, his father pleading with the man with oily hair and the crooked smile

Dinesh spent his spare time playing cricket with a rubber ball. A bare hand, was used in lieu of a bat, since none of the boys could afford a real cricket bat. On a hot, dry summer day, lying on a bundle of hay, all the boys dreamt about what they would do if they had a 1000 Rs. The objects of desire ranged from Cricket bat, new set of clothes to a TV. Dinesh, hesitatingly said, “I would use the money to do business to make more money.” His mother often looked lovingly at her only child. He was everything and the world to her She would skimp on her meals just so that Dinesh could get an extra chapati, thereby transferring his hunger to her Although his father was illiterate, he knew that education is what would pull them out of the well of poverty

After Dinesh, cleared the 10th Grade Board, his parents beamed proudly at their son, who was now a star in the village and destined for bigger things Their pride in their son mingled with a tinge of regret – an awareness that the bird would soon fly out of the nest

The village School Masters, who felt his life’s mission had been fulfilled, arranged for Dinesh to get a

government scholarship for his education at Bhuj, a town 50 km away

As his parents emotionally bade him farewell, he promised that he would return after he had earned atleast Rs 10,000/-, which would buy a better quality of life His parents said “Son, don’t hold grudges, our life is our destiny”

Living with a distant uncle in Bhuj, Dinesh began a formal education at a government college Although he now had access to books and good teachers, fellow students mocked his nomadic attire, and his rustic accent Dinesh displaying spunk, worked even harder A quicker grasp of the subject, was put to good use, by giving tuitions to other students His fees increased directly as his reputation grew

Dinesh after graduating from Bhuj, felt he had outgrown the town and decided to head to Mumbai to pursue an MBA. He met his parents at Bhuj who gave their blessings and his father again repeated “Son, don’t hold grudges, our life is our destiny”.

Mumbai, the promised land for a million immigrants gave more than a fair chance. Dinesh diligently completed his education and landed himself a job with an Investment Banking firm. His focus on the job, and investments on the stock markets paid handsome rewards He felt it was time to share the wealth at home Boarding a flight, he arrived at Bhuj and took a private taxi to reach his home The dust and dryness were still the same The village boys started chasing the car and the elders awoke from their mid-morning naps There were celebrations as the news spread that one of the boys from the village was now a big successful star from

Dinesh busied himself arranging for a proper brick house, with a coat of paint, an attached bathroom, a gas connection and a Water Pump to be used by the entire village His income obviated the necessity of his parents having to work The world had moved on, but time stood still in the deserts of Kutch

After accomplishing the tasks, Dinesh started packing As he was about to leave, he heard the excited chatter of boys running The usual buzz that announced the arrival of a visitor He stepped out to see the Trader, who emerged from the car He was noticeably pudgier The oily hair on his head was replaced by an oilier balding pate Rattled for a moment to see a young man, in very urban attire It took a moment for him to register it was Dinesh Lifting one eyebrow, he gave a broad beaming smile He remarked ” How are you?” Dinesh’s father bowed down once more, replied “all is well with your blessings Saheb!”. Dinesh merely stared at the Trader.

26 | STORIZEN MAGAZINE MAY 2024

The Trader cheerfully told Dinesh, how his father made exquisite embroidery and what good prices he gave. Dinesh, without batting an eyelid replied “if that was the case, father would not be still living in a hut.”

The Traders brow furrowed. He eyes looked towards the ground and his smile slowly disappeared.

He then looked up momentarily and said “Admittedly, I must have paid less a couple of times, but that was only to motivate him to give better work If you feel so strongly, I am happy to give a bonus for Diwali, which you can celebrate ”

Dinesh said “We don’t need you to buy our products from now on Father will be collecting all the Embroidery from the village and selling it directly to Retailers in Mumbai and Delhi We have now written our own destiny”

What was the biggest challenge you faced as Chief Learning Officer at TCS in terms of learning and unlearning?

Returning to TCS for my second stint was both exciting and daunting When Mr N Chandrasekaran, the then-CEO of TCS and now Chairman of the Tata Group, asked me to come back, I was hesitant However, his assurance that it was an organizational need convinced me to take on the role Initially, I oversaw Global Learning and Development, which later evolved into Talent Development

The challenges were twofold: personal and organizational Personally, as a technologist without an HR background, the realm of talent development was entirely new to me I had to quickly adapt and learn on the job, often from the very team I was supposed to lead Embracing Agile methodologies and integrating agility into learning processes became central Interestingly, I discovered my passion for writing while hospitalized, and this skill became a powerful tool to inspire and influence the younger generation through my blogs.

Organizationally, a significant challenge was that many professionals are not natural learners. It's human nature to avoid unnecessary effort unless it directly benefits one's career. For example, learning AI or Machine Learning has become crucial now because of their career advantages. Additionally, managing the scale of learning in such a vast organization was daunting. We had to ensure that our learning initiatives were scalable and could adapt swiftly to changes without causing major disruptions

Can you explain the ASCENT approach?

When I joined, TCS had numerous small-scale learning programs run by various business leaders, each catering to about 100-200 participants These fragmented efforts weren't creating the desired organizational impact To address this, I decided to sunset these sporadic programs and introduce a unified program ASCENT for all entry-level managers and leaders

ASCENT was designed by identifying the essential attributes of effective entry-level managers and creating a comprehensive program to address these attributes This consolidated approach ensured that our learning efforts were impactful and scalable

What are your thoughts on moonlighting, especially with the rise in cases during COVID19?

Moonlighting, where employees work for two companies simultaneously, first surfaced prominently at Wipro When discovered, companies responded by calling employees back to the office and, in some cases, terminating those involved

I see moonlighting as a question of integrity Working from home provides extra time that should be used for selfdevelopment, not for taking on another job This practice exploits the trust and freedom given by the company I believe companies should address this issue by punishing the guilty individuals rather than implementing blanket policies that penalize everyone Integrity should be at the core of professional conduct

What are your thoughts on Mr. Narayana Murthy's suggestion of an 80-hour work week?

Mr Murthy's suggestion has been widely debated, but I interpret it as advocating for an active and productive life He implies that young professionals should spend 8-9 hours at their jobs and another 5-6 hours on selfdevelopment and learning This total dedication to growth and learning is what drives success.

Personally, as a student, I often put in 15-16 hours a day studying, which instilled a strong work ethic. Applying this principle to one's career can lead to significant personal and professional growth.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed the work ecosystem?

COVID-19 brought immense challenges but also numerous opportunities It tested our adaptability and agility Personally, the pandemic gave me the time and space to write my book Instead of lamenting the situation, I chose to be productive This mindset of leveraging crises to find new opportunities is crucial

What is your opinion on online vs. offline learning and its impact on future generations?

Each generation evolves and becomes smarter on average Online learning is like Maggi Noodles quick and easily accessible However, it's often consumed without a clear need, leading to distractions

Classroom learning, on the other hand, is more structured and relevant The key difference lies in the application of knowledge Online learning can easily become mere browsing, whereas classroom learning often involves more practical applications The principle of Bloom's Taxonomy illustrates that retention is higher when you apply what you've learned Online learning is here to stay, but we must focus on applying and practicing this knowledge to truly benefit from it

Why do you think there's a decline in interest in IITs and IIMs nowadays?

Contrary to the belief that interest is declining, more students are aspiring to join IITs and IIMs The opportunities in India have improved, reducing the need for graduates to seek jobs abroad However, societal pressure on children to pursue engineering or medical careers is a concerning trend

In my book, I discuss parenting and the importance of not imposing career choices on children Bad parenting can lead to undue pressure, while good parenting allows children to follow their passions and strengths

Are students changing their minds about government jobs due to new rules?

Career choices should be individual decisions If a particular path becomes less viable, the system will naturally balance out as people adapt to new opportunities Forcing oneself into a path that everyone else is pursuing can lead to dissatisfaction. It's important to choose a career path based on personal interests and strengths.

What key message do you want readers to take away from your book?

Firstly, don't blame your circumstances. Negative energy from constant complaining can be detrimental. Instead, focus on leveraging the positives within the system

Secondly, making the right decisions at crucial career points is vital If you find yourself on the wrong path, it's important to course-correct effectively

Lastly, dealing with negative energy through forgiveness and moving on is crucial for success

How you manage and let go of negativity will significantly impact your personal and professional growth

ayatri, in spite of being a hard-working, peace-loving, god-fearing woman, had the misfortune or privilege of being considered an ill-fated woman.

“Don't take her to hospital, Binu.” Shubha said to his brother, pleadingly on that fatal Tuesday.

“Why? Ma is sick and baudi is right in wanting to visit her ” Binu asked his elder brother, surprised

“Just like that ” Shubha replied “Besides, you know what people are like Should anything untoward happen today, God forbid, you can't stop people from bad-mouthing her Can you?” Shubha murmured If he wanted to tell his younger brother anything more, he refrained himself from discussing the topic any further

It happened like that : Gayatri, Shubha’s wife had requested Binu, her brother-in-law, earlier in the morning to take her to Peerless Hospital in Kolkata to visit her ailing mother-in-law Busy as she had been running the household chores in the absence of her in-law, she was the only one not to have gone out to meet her mother-in-law, long-hospitalized due to a severe bout of pneumonia

But the reason why Shubha had requested Binu not to take his wife to the hospital became clear hours after their visit to the hospital

On that glorious Tuesday afternoon, almost all the Sen household members were there to see Durga, Binu’s mother.

The doctor had told Binu earlier in the day that Durga’s condition had improved miraculously to sift her to the General Ward from the ICU, where she had been kept on ventilation for the past twelve days.

Once the news was passed through Binu, everyone in the Sen Family wanted to visit her. That's when Gayatri had made the request to her brother-in-law to take her to the hospital

By the time they reached there and stepped into the General Ward, they were surprised to see almost all their kith and kin surrounding the bed on their left Binu could also see his mother popped up on the bed, looking fatigued yet talking animatedly to one of her grandsons

He walked across to the other side of Bed No - 113 and squeezed his way in through the crowd of relatives

“Can you tell me my name, granna?” Someone asked Durga from the lap of his mother.

“Look who’s come here, Ma,” his sister, Anwesa, told Durga, while she, in a sari loosely wrapped around her, slowly turned her head to find Binu there.

She beamed as their eyes met Binu gently stretched his hand out to touch his mother before asking:

“And tell me who I am, Ma ”

“You? Can you ever dare me to forget your identity?” Durga answered without naming him directly

The way she was greeting people, answering their questions and all, it was hard to believe that it was not so long ago that she was fighting a lost battle against Death!

Amidst all the hummings and suppressed excitement, Durga next lowered her gaze towards the corner where Gayatri, a big smile hovering over her mouth, was standing expectantly

“How are you Ma?” She shot the question at her motherin-law

Something strange happened the very next moment to Durga, who had barely managed to set her eyes on Gayatri by then At first, her smile vanished into thin air Next, her whole face got contorted, her eyes upturned as she started trembling like the Devil had possessed her. Then, her teeth were bared like Goddess Kali was out on a vengeance and the corners of her mouth started frothing!

One of the nurses rushed in instantaneously. She hurriedly made her way through, took a look at Durga quaking on the bed like the recently slaughtered head of a lamb, and wasted no time in ringing the doctor, who, on his arrival asked everyone to make way as Durga was being lifted up from the bed and put back on a stretcher

“What's wrong with Ma, Doctor?” Binu enquired helplessly running after the doctor

“I am not sure but I think she has had a convulsion ” The doctor responded Then, before Binu could ask him any further questions, he blurted out on his own “We are shifting her back to the ICU Dr Bose has already been informed He is on his way ”

The gist of the matter was that Durga, who had recovered from her prolonged illness that very day, transferred barely five hours back to the General Ward, had to be shifted back up to the ICU on the same Tuesday itself!

A fighter to the core, Durga, having heroically fought her final battle tooth and nail for close to two weeks, finally succumbed to all powerful Death the next day

The sun, on the other side of the river, had long gone down in the horizon, leaving the sky crimson Standing on the steps leading down to the Ganges, Binu, barechested and in a dhoti around her loins with water dripping from all over, looked back wishfully at the reflection of the crimson sky in the waters before throwing the earthen pot containing the ashes of his deceased mother into the holy river

A raven crowed from a tree nearby as someone was heard remarking from the top flight of steps further up: “I told you. That Gayatri is an evil woman. Didn’t Durga Aunty look all set on the road to recovery when Gayatri turned up? And no sooner had Aunty set her eyes on the cursed lady, you know what happened? Death seized her. She didn't live to see another day…...”

Something brother Shubham had told him, came to Binu’s mind :

“ Should anything untoward happen, God forbid, you can't stop people from bad-mouthing her Can you?”

Solidarity may sound like a small word, but it has a deeper and higher meaning Itmeans unity, harmony, cohesion and Camaraderie. The word stands for (collective) cooperation and understanding among groups (of individuals), particularly during times of adversity

Solidarity is most commonly witnessed during the time of war, natural calamity, disasters or pandemics During a time of crisis, the human impulse comes collectively to tackle and address the crisis with unity It transcends social status, ethnicity, religion, race and even borders.

The labour union is one of the best examplesof solidarity The Workers/labourers have achieved their rights like, workplace safety, increments in their wages, fixing minimum wages etc.…, through the labour union (i.e. collective action of labourers) The solidarity of people for a common cause has mostly succeeded

Solidarity transcends personal interests and supports each other for common causes, whatever it may be Whenever there is social injustice many people come together and show their solidarity for social justice By showing this solidarity, they bring changes in society and justice for the victims.

Many countries achieved their freedom by showing their solidarity for the independence of their country. Social inequalities transcended beyond boundaries and races when people fought for a common cause. A society can make several changes by showing their solidarity for the right cause

Solidarity reminds an old fable –There was a lion king in the forest. Every day he comes to the outskirts of town and hunts down his food Each day the lion hunts different food, for example, one day it may hunt deer, goat, buffalo, etc…., the buffaloes notice the way the lion hunt and they gather one fine day before the lion comes to hunt They discussed and concluded that today not only that no one will become prey for this lion but also they should ensure that this lion never thinks of coming to the outskirts of the forest (as well as the town).

STORIZEN MAGAZINE | 37 MAY 2024

With that determination, they were grazing the grass as usual in the outskirt of the forests. The lion came for the hunt To its surprise lion saw that these buffaloes were grazing the grass together in groups and each group had five (5) buffaloes, still lion went for hunting one of them at that time the rest of the four buffaloes came to the rescue and fought with the lion together

Within no time, rest of the buffaloes surrounded the lion and started pushing it harder together with their horns. After some time, the lion was injured and went away without any prey and never came back to the outskirts That is how buffaloes showed their solidarity and proved that unity is strength

The Solidarity forever for the right cause will always lead to success. Human impulse always ensures that we all show solidarity forever during any kind of crisis across the world No force in the world can stand against it when people have decided to show solidarity forever.

Asako Yuzuki's 2017 novel "Butter," which was first published in Japan and has now been translated into English by Polly Barton, is a distinctive combination of a friendship story and a whodunit mystery, all encased in a sumptuous culinary motif. The narrative centers on

journalist Rika Machida's investigation into the life of gourmet Manako Kajii, who was found guilty of killing and defrauding men. A straightforward request for a beef stew recipe launches Machida's plan to get Kajii to tell the truth, and it sets off a slow-burning drama that delves far deeper than the murders Kajii is said to have committed The novel's plot revolves around Machida and Kajii's correspondence in search of culinary tips As the simple recipes morph into increasingly sophisticated and unusual meal instructions, a game of cat and mouse begins The colorful, mouth-watering descriptions of food heighten the anticipation, creating a fascinating and stressful environment Readers are left wondering who is influencing whom as Machida attempts to find the truth about Kajii's purported misdeeds Yuzuki's writing is full of sensory nuances, notably the way food is portrayed and how it affects the characters Machida's metamorphosis from a busy professional who ignores food to a passionate thing is eloquently depicted. Her culinary exploration mirrors her increased knowledge of Kajii and herself, as she produces and serves numerous foods. This investigation of food and its connections to identity and relationships enriches the work, elevating it above the status of a thriller. Based on the true story of the "Konkatsu Killer," the novel explores topics of social sexism and the enforcement of cultural standards. The media frenzy around Kajii's case exemplifies society's concern with beauty and the double standards women confront Kajii's unashamed passion for food and her body becomes a prominent element of the story, forcing the reader to reconsider concepts like as guilt, pleasure, and self-acceptance To summarize, "Butter" is a thought-provoking and multi-layered work that provides a unique reading experience While it may not fit cleanly into the traditional murder mystery genre, it captivates with its detailed descriptions of cuisine and astute comments on society

For individuals who want to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and food while also exploring issues of friendship, identity, and societal expectations, "Butter" is a delightful book that will stay with them long beyond the last page.

"Caste Away: Perspectives on CasteEquality Struggles in Tamil Nadu" by Na Vanamamalai explores the complex dynamics of caste in Tamil Nadu from the Chola era to the early twentieth century The book uses historical sources, ascetic lyrics, and court rulings to show how Chola

Vanamamalai's study also digs into Tamil Nadu's medieval era, spanning the late 10th to 13th century, exposing a rich social fabric. The extensive collection of inscriptions from this period, preserved on temple walls and described in sources like as the Epigraphia Indica and South Indian Inscriptions, provides a complex understanding of societal interactions. These inscriptions emphasize the mobility of the caste system and the importance of local politics, economic concerns, and social ambitions in constructing caste hierarchies Overall, "Caste Away" makes a significant contribution to our understanding of caste in Tamil Nadu It emphasizes the need to acknowledge the historical intricacies and geographical variances in the emergence of caste Vanamamalai's work goes beyond simple or ideologically motivated narratives, instead providing a thorough and nuanced assessment of the social, economic, and political variables that have impacted caste relations throughout millennia

Tarryn Fisher's latest psychological thriller, "Good Half Gone," is a rollercoaster of twists and turns that will make readers doubt all they think they know. Fisher's intriguing concept and complex storyline lead readers on a voyage of mystery, intrigue, and surprising revelations. However, while the novel's idea is unquestionably intriguing, its

implementation may leave readers with conflicting views The protagonists of the tale are the sixteen-year-old twins Piper and Iris Walsh, whose lives are permanently altered after Piper is kidnapped during a party. Iris is still troubled by her sister's disappearance nine years later. She is parenting Piper's boy as her own and is never stopping in her quest for information. In her search for the truth, Iris interns at the Shoal Island Hospital for the Criminally Insane and soon finds herself enmeshed in a web of lies and secrets that threatens to devour her. Each chapter of Tarryn Fisher's masterfully written story reveals more facets of the mystery, building to a tense and suspenseful finale The psychiatric institute's isolated island location provides a spooky background for the story and heightens the ominous and uneasy vibe Nonetheless, some readers may find the numerous time jumps and plethora of seemingly unimportant information to be too much, which would hurt the story's overall coherence and pace While the novel's finale includes a number of surprising disclosures, it may also leave readers feeling conflicted While certain surprises are artfully predicted and lend dimension to the plot, others border on the unbelievable, straining credibility and detracting from the story's impact Furthermore, the insertion of a romance subplot appears contrived and detracts from the intensity of Iris' search for the truth, diluting the novel's main emphasis. "Good Half Gone" is a strong thriller with an intriguing idea and evocative backdrop, to sum up. Although the novel's intricate narrative and surprising turns will keep readers interested, some readers may not be happy with the book's speed or resolution.

Notwithstanding its shortcomings, Fisher's examination of kinship ties, fortitude, and the pursuit of justice is thought-provoking reading that stays with you long after the last page.

Andrew J Scott's "The Longevity Imperative: Building a Better Society for Healthier, Longer Lives" provides a persuasive examination of the societal transformations required by extended lifespans. Scott contends that, while longer lives provide chances for growth

and development, our current society systems are not prepared to accommodate this demographic transformation Rather than focusing primarily on the concerns of the elderly, Scott calls for a holistic strategy that assists people of all ages in planning for long-term futures Scott's manifesto emphasizes personal, social, political, economic, and cultural changes for longer, healthier, happier, and more productive lives He defies the focus on increasing lifespan by focusing on preventative healthcare and quality-of-life upgrades Scott views longevity as an opportunity for economic growth and societal progress, encouraging readers to view it as a positive force for change. The book has received praise from thought leaders, including Jim Mellon and David Sinclair, and serves as a wake-up call for legislators, corporate leaders, and individuals to address aging and longevity challenges. Scott's knowledge of the topic of longevity is clear throughout the book, as he navigates the complex ramifications of living longer lives with clarity and conviction He discusses a variety of possibilities arising from scientific discoveries and technological improvements, emphasizing the possibility of increased quality of life at all ages Scott proposes an "evergreen agenda" that allows individuals to thrive throughout their lifetimes, providing a model for society reform in the face of population transition Although "The Longevity Imperative" is praised for its innovative methodology and provocative discoveries, some readers express dissatisfaction with its implementation Some criticize the book for lacking originality and practical assistance, implying that policymakers would benefit more from it than readers looking for advice The story's alternating discourse at the individual and policy levels makes it difficult for readers to follow up and understand. "The Longevity Imperative" continues to be an important contribution to the discussion about aging and lifespan in spite of these criticisms. It challenges readers to reconsider how they view aging and promotes proactive involvement with the opportunities that come with living longer.

Despite its shortcomings, the book encourages readers to embrace the longevity revolution and help create a better future for all by igniting a conversation and taking action.

It highlights humanity's ability to compartmentalize and rationalize violence, raising concerns about the moral value of tradition and comfort. Finally, "The Meat Market," translated by Shabnam Nadiya, is remarkable for its vivid storytelling and ability to elicit reflection on often-overlooked cultural traditions The translation accurately portrays the story's emotional weight and cultural intricacies, making it more accessible to a wider audience

This gripping story forces readers to confront hard social realities and personal introspections, leaving an impression long beyond the last page and demonstrating Alam's ability to explore the darkest aspects of human nature.

Arnab Ray's "The Mine" is a terrifying thriller that stays with the reader long after the last page is turned The story revolves around a group of five specialists invited to a highly advanced mining complex, where strange events hint at sinister secrets hidden under the soil As the characters confront their own dark pasts and the

frightening powers hiding under the mine's depths, Ray weaves a thrilling and psychologically fascinating story The novel, divided into three sections The Beginning, The Middle, and The End does not spend time immersing readers in a world full of mystery and fear. Ray expertly blends together real-life occurrences and personal emotions, giving the story a sense of realism while tapping into universal anxieties. The prologue establishes the tone for the horrors that follow, leading readers through a maze of interrelated events and terrifying truths. One of the novel's merits is its ability to convey a genuine sense of discomfort through its interwoven episodes Ray expertly navigates many perspectives, locales, and story strands, keeping readers on edge as they put together the complex web of mystery and intrigue Drawing on filmy cliches, the novel progresses with a cinematic flare, allowing readers to vividly imagine the escalating horrors The characters in "The Mine" are both complicated and flawed, each dealing with their own problems and moral difficulties Ray imbues his characters with depth and empathy, from Samar, the mourning hermit, to Dr Anjali Menon, the widowed archaeologist, ensuring that their hardships strike a deep emotional chord However, the work occasionally fails to represent female characters well, relying on stale stereotypes and problematic clichés that detract from an otherwise engaging story. Despite its flaws, "The Mine" delivers a thrilling combination of psychological horror and splatterpunk gore.

Ray brilliantly mixes tension and physical thrills, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the finish. While the story has shortcomings, its capacity to evoke fear and discomfort is clear, making it a mustread for enthusiasts of the genre.

Scarcity Brain by Michael Easter- A fascinating book that explores how scarcity is an inherent part of our lives, influenced by our brain chemistry and manifested through habits or responses to life's challenges It reveals the biological and evolutionary foundations behind our brain's

fixations, helping us recognize these traps and embark on a journey toward living more satisfying, healthier, and meaningful lives in the years to come. What’s the Book All About? “Scarcity Brain” says we’re built to crave things because in the past, there wasn’t always enough. But now, even though we have plenty, we still want more. The book explains why we feel this way and how companies use it to make money. It says we need to understand this and find ways to focus on what really matters.

Understanding the Scarcity Cycle

Think about slot machines They keep us playing by giving small rewards sometimes and making us think we might win big This happens in other parts of life too, like bingewatching TV shows or shopping online The book calls this a "scarcity loop," where we keep wanting more even when we don’t need it

Why Uncertain Rewards Are So Tempting?

Even animals like getting uncertain rewards, even if it means less food overall We like the excitement of not knowing if we'll get something good. But this can make us make bad choices. For example, we might keep buying lottery tickets even though we hardly ever win.

Looking at Scarcity from an Old Perspective?

Our ancestors had to keep looking for food because they didn’t always find it. That's why we still like the thrill of uncertainty today The book says this instinct helped them survive, but now it can make us feel stressed and anxious

Swapping One Scarcity for Another

The author talks about how he replaced one bad habit with another When he stopped one addiction, he became obsessed with something else But he says we can change our habits if we’re aware of them Instead of constantly chasing more, we can focus on what makes us truly happy

Is the Book Worth It?

Indeed, it is! The book has some interesting ideas, but it can be a bit all over the place Still, it makes you think about why we always want more If you’re interested in understanding your own behavior better, it might be worth a read
