INFLUENCE REGENT UNIVERSITY’S ROBERTSON SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT

MICHELE BACHMANN, J.D., LL.M. DEAN, ROBERTSON SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT

“At the Roberston School of Government, we maintain fidelity to principles of success and principles that work. Those are the truths espoused in the Bible, chief among which is equal protection under the law.”

Michele Bachmann never planned on becoming dean of an esteemed school of higher education. But like any successful proposal, when asked if she would accept the position for the Robertson School of Government, her answer was a resounding yes. Throughout Bachmann’s distinguished career as a federal tax litigation attorney, former U.S. Congresswoman (and first woman from Minnesota elected to the House of Representatives), and presidential nominee, her plan has always been this: Say yes.

“God has called me into various adventures I couldn’t have designed or imagined. Now, I am privileged to help see that tens of thousands of men and women are trained to change not only America but nations with biblical leadership.” She shares that Regent offers students significant, competitive advantages in the marketplace: “Our academic excellence is high, and our parallel focus is on the practical application of eternal biblical truths. For 5,000 years of recorded human history, these timeless truths have worked every time. That’s a pretty good record.”

She adds, “Now more than ever, the world needs to hear those truths. And who better to carry that message to the world than the Regent School of Government students.” Bachmann is confident that these capable men and women will leave equipped with a biblical understanding of governance and apply those principles for the betterment of people’s lives and happiness.

INFLUENCE REGENT UNIVERSITY’S ROBERTSON SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT ALUMNUS

ANDREW OWENS, ’17

CHIEF DEPUTY TREASURER, CITY OF SUFFOLK

“The whole concept at Regent was, if you are pursuing administration in the public interest, you aren’t just doing it to be a bureaucrat, but to serve those around you. You have to be engaged and know what you believe when you go into it, to stand up for what you think is right.”

When Andrew Owens was little, his parents would bring him into the voting booth on Election Day and let him push the button. This simple act helped spark a lifelong interest in civics — and would be the first of many times Andrew had his finger on what matters to taxpayers. “There’s a stigma that government is not effective — I do everything I can to prove that wrong,” he says.

As the Suffolk chief deputy treasurer, he combines his passion for community and his Christian values: putting the needs of others first and involving them in the decisionmaking process. When he decided to continue his education, he felt drawn to the MPA curriculum at Regent. “The MPA served as an affirmation that public service is my life’s calling. It’s not for the

faint-hearted. Decisions you make impact people’s lives.” Andrew notes that public service is an arena where you have to be engaged, know what you believe and stand up for what you think is right, which isn’t always popular. But, with the guidance of biblical values and the servant leadership principles he learned at Regent, he works hard to operate in wisdom and keep others first.

NATASHA MOORE ‘20

SECURITY SPECIALIST, NAVY RESERVES

“Serving country and community is my passion. Regent and its Military Resource Center provided priceless guidance to help me get the knowledge and skills to answer that calling.”

Natasha Moore is a person with single-minded focus and uncommon grit. As a child, she attended a Veteran’s Day picnic during which a soldier allowed her to sit in a Humvee. “They painted my face (camouflage) and told me about the Army’s mission and what soldiers do,” says Nathasha. And from that day, she knew what she wanted to do — join the military.

“Unfortunately, it’s hard to see the bigger picture sometimes when you’re younger, and I didn’t know the importance of my education until I got the wake-up call that I would need to finish high school and have 15 college credits to do what I wanted to do in the Navy.” That reality check led her to Regent, where she earned both her

bachelor’s and master’s degrees with honors. “Regent’s service-first approach and relevant program choices sold me,” she says. Nathasha is drawn to emergency management and homeland security and hopes to one day work in a federal agency such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
