It’s that time of year again.....

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a restful and re-energizing summer break. We have been busy during break with continued construction at the high school and I have to tell you that it is really coming together nicely. If you haven’t driven by the front entrance – or down Lakeview recently I highly recommend it – the building looks beautiful. Our staff has been working hard this summer, attending many different trainings to continue our own growth so we can provide the very best experience for your child. We are so fortunate to have such dedicated and caring staff members that are always willing to go the extra mile for the sake of our students. Just recently the Michigan Department of Education released the “scorecard” for all K-12 educational entities and we have a great deal to be proud of here in Saint Joseph. The MDE ranks all schools in a top to bottom statewide percentile rank and all of our schools ranked quite high. Actually, our high school was rated as a “reward” school – there were only 141 schools rated as high performing in this category! 4th Annual American Girl® Fashion Show

Studies show that children who regularly ate a healthy lunch had better standardized test scores and better classroom behavior.

District Breakfast Program Breakfast will be offered daily in the cafeterias. Please check your school’s calendar for times. Meal prices are $1.50 for elementary students and $1.75 for secondary students. Menus are available on-line. All menus are available on-line. Lunch Program Student lunches are $2.35 for elementary and $2.75 for secondary per day. This includes the entrée (or alternate choice), vegetable, fruit, bread, and milk. Additional milk may be purchased for 60 cents. Students need to bring lunch money with them on the first day of school unless they have funds left from last year. Any food service debts from last year should be settled as soon as possible. Please visit www.sendmoneytoschool.com to pay or sign up just to look at your

student’s balance. You may pay online with a credit/debit card. There is a $ 1.75 processing fee to pay on-line. Free & Reduced Meals Applications for free and reduced price breakfast/lunch will be sent home or they can be filled out online at www. lunchapp.com. Breakfast/Lunch must be purchased until these applications have been received and qualification has been determined. Parents/Guardians will be notified through mail/ email when their application has been processed. We are excited to announce that our PTO school fundraiser this year is the 2nd Annual “Laps for Lincoln” walk-a-thon! Last year, we raised over $23,000!!! Not only is this a wonderful opportunity to raise important funds for our school, it is a time that can be shared with friends and family, all while promoting health and fitness! Every dollar raised will directly benefit our Lincoln children; PTO sponsored field trips, library books, guest speakers and assemblies, teacher grants and much more.

A little effort goes a long way!

The students at E. P. Clarke Elementary will swing out of summer and slide into the new school year in style! A year of fundraising by the students and PTO made replacing outdated equipment that was removed last summer possible. Over 70 volunteers turned out to make our community build and refresh efforts a huge success. Another example of the great community in which we live. Thank you E.P. Clarke parents and neighborhood volunteers.

Over the summer the SJHS gym got a bit of a facelift. New paint and new bleachers will greet students and Bears fans this year.

You can still purchase an engraved brick for installation on the plaza at the new entrance to the high school or the new Performing Arts Center entrance. The funds raised will allow us to provide additional equipment, materials, and programming to enhance our new surroundings as well as take the next step for our students to 1 to 1 computing. Funds raised from PAC brick sales will allow Band and Orchestra parents to carry on their excellence in music education program including Artists in Residence, uniform and instrument purchases, and student summer camp scholarships.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE The dust has been flying at St. Joseph High School this summer. You can see many changes if you drive by either the front or the back of the school. The meetings will be held in the auditorium. Attendance at one of the meetings (last spring or upcoming) is required for students to be able to take home a laptop. Coordinators of the 1:1 Partnership for Unlimited Learning, Bryan Parsons and Amy Dirlam, were extremely pleased with how the first semester of 1:1 computing went last school year. “The students demonstrated tremendous responsibility and care for the machines, and the teachers really embraced this new learning environment,” Dirlam said.

The St. Joseph Public Schools 1:1 Computing Initiative, Partnership for Unlimited Learning, will begin its second year at Upton Middle School this fall. Returning 7th graders will start the school year by being reissued the MacBook Air computers they received last January. Incoming 6th graders will participate in several training sessions before being issued their computers.

Parents were also extremely supportive of the program. “The survey results indicated that parents and students were pleased with the program overall. Both parents and students agree that awareness of assignments, as well as access to assignments online, being one of the biggest benefits,” Parsons commented. The 1:1 computing initiative has been heavily supported by the St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation, which has committed approximately $200,000.00 to the program.

This bootcamp style training will cover topics such as digital citizenship, proper use and care of the computers, creating and saving projects, and general troubleshooting tips. Parents of incoming 6th graders who did not attend orientation last spring should plan to come to one of the 1:1 parent meetings that will be held on Wednesday, August 28th at 5:00 PM, or Wednesday, September 4th at 9:00 AM.

SJHS Public Fitness Program November through March

The St. Joseph HIgh School Field House will be open to the community as our “thank you” for their continued support. There are lots of activities planned including family nights, adult basketball, track usage and more. We hope you can continue to take advantage of this facility. Please visit our web site for exact times and dates. Please note the following: • All users must sign a waiver and show proof of residency before use. • Users of the facility must be at least 18 yrs. old. If you are a St. Joseph High School student, you may use the track for running. • No children are allowed in the facility except on designated family days and times. • All users must wear clean dry athletic shoes. Please carry in shoes when wet or snowy. • When the SJPS are closed, so is the Field House. Listen to the radio and TV for inclement weather closings. Do I have to switch schools? NO! You can attend between 1-3 classes at St. Joseph High School and still receive your diploma from the school you currently attend.

Advanced Placement & Direct Credit

St. Joseph High School offers the most Advanced Placement and Direct Credit classes in the area, and now they are all open to you! Besides the rigorous AP curriculum that will greatly enhance your transcript, SJHS also has a comprehensive direct credit program where students actually earn college credit while in high school. Not only are students getting a great headstart, they are also saving thousands in tuition.

Industrial Technology, Business & Career Classes

Industrial technology classes teach problem solving and hands-on skills that are transferable to other curricular areas and provide an additional avenue of success. We provide vocational and avocational experiences by working with local industry and educators to assure that appropriate content and employability skills are taught. Our new CAD lab is one of the best in the state.

World Languages

Our mission is to guide students in developing proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in a variety of world languages. St. Joseph Public Schools also provides many opportunities to learn about cultural similarities and differences and to help students become aware of related career possibilities. New technologies including computers and listening stations have continued to provide new ways of learning in our World Language classrooms. Many of our students choose to go abroad through class trips or other avenues while at St. Joseph Public Schools.

Nationally Ranked Fine Arts Program

The St. Joseph Performing & Visual Arts Program has had a long tradition of excellence. Students have traveled all over the world, performing at venues like Carnegie Hall. In the spring of 2012, the Chamber Orchestra competed and was ranked third in the nation. The mission of this program is to provide each student with intellectual and creative artistic experiences to inspire them to reach their highest potential achievement. Our visual arts program averages over $150,000 annually in student scholarships.

After almost 40 years the Upton Planetarium has received a much needed face lift in thanks to the generosity of the Upton Foundation and Steve and Elizabeth Upton. A newly painted dome, refurbished star machine, new seating and the latest in digital technology, lights and sound will amaze visitors. Throughout the year, community nights are held once a month.
